I'm sorry, but that Justin Timberlake track is garbage

I've tried very hard to look at the positives of Justin Timberlake's solo effort "Like I Love You", mostly because I like The Neptunes, but his singing on it is horrendous and completely ruins the song. That ill-placed, screechy, punch-me-in-the-nuts-shrieky falsetto is the WORST THING EVER. Even worse is the exercise in cockfarmery wankdom that is the video; "Oooh, look at ME! I'm a DANCER! See, I've got my own thing going on, I'm not trying to recreate my ex-girlfriend's style... HONEST!" His herky-jerky tries-to-be-pop-and-lock-but-ends-up-being-shitty-mcshit dance moves are THE END OF THE WORLD. And GOOD GOD I just want to punch Pharrell in the face at the end of the song; STOP TOUCHING YOUR CHIN, JACKASS. Honestly, this song is driving me insane. I really, really really dislike it; in fact, there's nothing redeemable I can find about it. The snares are far too reverbed, the synth line at the end is just stupid, the chorus is weak, the verses are weak, and OH MY GOD SOMEONE STOP JUSTIN FROM SINGING.

Having said all that, it's better than the Nick Carter song, which I think is actually the Apocalypse in a funny moustache.

haha you're alex in NYC!!

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 28 October 2002 19:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

When I saw the thread title I thought of dear old Alex sitting spluttering his nightly Bud, yes.

It's a bit creepy, isn't it? "Don't worry, it's only Justin" - ew get away from me you permy beast! I'm kind of amazed, given that Thriller remains the biggest-selling thing ever ever, that nobody apart from Rockwell and Green Gartside has tried to rip Jacko this blatantly until now. So points for finding a niche but the song is a shrug.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 28 October 2002 19:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, i was underwhelmed.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 28 October 2002 19:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

i agree that the excessive use of falsetto is a big turn-off....but i like the bit where Pharrell (presumably) shouts 'HEY!'

i was going to do a Taking Sides: 'Like I Love You' vs Jordan Knight 'Give It To You' but questioned the point

as for ripping off Jacko's style...have you heard Kelis' 'Roller Rink'? - it really sounds like Jacko is singing the verses on that one

blueski, Monday, 28 October 2002 19:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's as much the dancing and the hat though!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 28 October 2002 19:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Clipse's bit is good but too late in the song to make a difference.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 28 October 2002 19:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

The sad thing is that he's trying SO HARD to be Michael Jackson but he looks SO MUCH like Britney Spears. And I cannot stress how GODAWFUL his singing is; if he's going to show off his falsetto, couldn't he, like, hit a note or something rather than squawking like a newly-neutered rooster?

The big difference between Justin Timberlake and Jordan Knight is that Jordan can still sing.

Geeg: You are on on crack and so is yo mama. No disrespect intended.

My wife mentioned off-hand how much better the song would have been if Usher had sang it and I can only agree, seeing as Usher actually supports his sound and would better fill the empty space in the backing track.

dan- i reach these sorts of conclusions without even hearing the track.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 28 October 2002 19:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

the dancing is really great, i think. who dances better? name one person who can dance better! it's not britney. she can't dance at all. he might - might! - be copying some of her moves but he pulls them off like crazy.

all of the falsetto bits are good. and the creaky bits where his voice is all cracking and stuff. it's sexy, you see.

the clipse guy's verse in the middle, too. it's so great.

it might be kind of weak, for the reasons you said, i guess. but that's what makes it so great. and it's justin timberlake and this is his first try at this kind of thing. you don't understand him. wait for the album! and the rest of the singles. they will tell the whole story. the j timberlake story.

timbaland! that one producer guy who everyone likes. he did a thing for the album! you know?

please give justin a chance to prove himself.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 28 October 2002 19:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Cause it's part of the package if you're watching the video or a TV performance Alex. It makes as little sense to take the music on its own in those circs as it would if you were watching a ballet.

It doesn't matter if you're listening to the radio or buying the CD. Come on this is basic stuff!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 28 October 2002 19:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

bnw (bnw), Monday, 28 October 2002 20:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

i dunno if that ballet comparison makes sense because of course the track exists independent of the performance/video...you hear the track before you see the video and you can judge it on its own merits after all

and you cant diss Justin for dancing like Britney - they've been together most of their lives and have the same goals and presumably the same ideas as a result - its hardly bad dancing in any case

blueski, Monday, 28 October 2002 20:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

d k is painfully OTM and so is Tom re:dancing; no-one's said 'DRUMS!!!' yet because the novelty has worn off, but someone is about to mention the 'everybody dance' bit where the track fades out into non-danceable silence genius. The falsetto bits are achingly beautiful, angular, and seminal. The 'it's a Wacko perv' crit surely can't apply; it's too obv. to be a perv, it must be something else; I'm not quite sure what it is though.

I hear this on thee radio quite a lot. I think it has been a-listed perhaps. I like the pushy-sounding beatz, & I try to concentrate on them whilst the rekkid is on, because I think the rest of it is utter rubbish. The singing, as noted above (somewhere) is really, really horrible. The lyrix seem a bit creepy to me as well. Plus, there's this bit where he seems to sing "here baby, hold my jacket". Does he really sing that? Is it some kind ov euphemism? It sounds realld stupid. I think this rekkid is DUD.

Okay, yes, "DRUMZ!", but also the little electro melody just before it, and "HEY!", and the loaded "Hoah!" and the Clipse verse, and the tense opening strum, and the way the high falsetto suddenly bursts out for no reason at all... this song is pure dynamic. Quality or otherwise sorta becomes a moot point.

'NSync had their moments ("Bye Bye Bye", "Gone", "Girlfriend", "It's Gonna Be Me" if I'm in the right mood and I've managed to skip Justin's verse), but Justin is just so WRONG on "Like I Love You" that I can't deal. He should leave the falsetto singing to Chris.

"Bye Bye Bye"

EURGH. I stand by my contention that a great song for five seconds was ruined by the quavering jello voices that proceeded to slather themselves all over it. Assholes. And sorry Blueski, "Pop" is the sound of a band aiming for relevance and deserving to be kicked brutally for it. Eric Clapton would have done a better job. ;-)

DavidM (DavidM), Tuesday, 29 October 2002 18:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

i luv the album. the bootyshaker to ballad ratio is a bit too low for my taste but i've warmed up well to the slower songs. the music is mostly great and his voice is exactly the sort i like to hear in pop music. justified is not as undeniable as i'd hoped, though - i've only found a few of the songs in my head after listening to it a week: "last night", the timbaland tracks, "senorita", and "rock your body" in particular. the latter seems the most retro-mj to me and it had better be a single cuz the girl in it sounds hot. the video in my head looks nice.

as for "like i love you" - i still like hearing it a few times a day. maybe his voice is too much cut-up flash, though - too many changes/parts and not enough real quality - maybe... a four or five minute intro to an incomplete song? good enough for me. the album tracks go down a lot smoother.

why tim? cos you think i'm naive in saying that (in fact i shouldve said 'it heralded teenpop being perceived as just as cool as the hip hop in the charts by the general zeitgeist/media) or because the Neptunes are prepared to produce pop for papes in their quest for greatness and you consider that a lack of integrity?

its not like i went and bought or downloaded 'Pop' anyway - i have no desire to own and listen to that or 'Like I Love You' but i see it on TV and hear it on radio and it doesnt piss me off (well the latter does cos of that screechy falsetto), its more likely to make me nod my head and tap my foot or something - this is purely down to the Neps production skills as i dont get anything else out of the songs (i.e. the lyrics and messages mean shit to me)

Tim i didnt care for Britney or N Sync's stuff at all until the two aforementioned singles in question - but this idea that I waited for them to come out before liking pop is absurd. granted i'm still getting used to the idea that its not just kids, non-angst-ridden teenagers and kitsch gay guys who like that kinda thing (hey this was a big shock to me 3 years ago ;) but for fucks sake there's more to pop, even manufactured pop, then this kind of stuff - i still see a world of difference between them and the Pet Shop Boys, St Etienne and even Moloko (all of whom i've liked for years due to their ability to craft a quirky, catchy pop track if nothing else) yet they all qualify as pop music just as much Britney and co...and i still think that as a reserved and deep-thinking mid 20s white heterosexual male its hardly depressing if i find nothing of value in boy bands, pop queens and such generally - whats more, all the early Britney singles were as over-rated as fuck and she's got noticeably better in my opinion since finally putting out to Justin - so thar

Oh PUH LEEZ. Geeg doesn't need drugs as he gets off on the musique. heh. Obv it is CLASSIQUE: it's about Justin Timberlake begging his fans to let him grow up, like Michael Jackson when he was dancing Off The Wall. He's in control - "Drums!" - but at the same time he's fully aware he's placing his fate in his fans' hands. We (the fans and Justin) both need eachother. It's oh so meta-pop like "I'm a slave for you" was. And I quite ADORE Arto Lindsay though his last performance was a bit too *messy* (which alienated the attendants who had never heard of No New York).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 November 2002 18:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

ok... just saw JT perform this live on TRL and i must say the track is MUCH better live! he's got la funk guys as his band.. Fish Fisher from Fishbone on drums!

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 23:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

! On the one hand that's wonderful, on the other hand how does Fisher keep from sharpening his drumsticks and throwing them straight through Timberlake's shiny little heart?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 23:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

they seem to have a good relationship on stage. JT stands in front of Fish before each song and they laugh. on the "drums!" part he says "Fish.. break it down." then i blacked out.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 00:20 (twenty-one years ago) link

Good fuckin' Lord! Someone tell that guy who started the Fishbone thread a few days ago. He'll have a heart attack.

Still, I've heard of worse cases of "oh how the mighty have fallen." Paul Raven of Killing Joke actually had to play with Belinda Carlisle for a while (before re-joining the Joke, then quitting again, then joining Prong etc.)

Still, playing drums behind Justin Timberlake....who wasn't even a fetus when Fishbone's jaw-droping eponymous debut e.p. was released, is a sad, sad state of affairs indeed.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 00:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

The rest of the album is mostly better though Dan if you don't like his voice you still won't like it.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 00:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

Alex, i dont think its such a bad thing! Fish plays the hell out of the drums and works well with this new "crazy neptunes produced for live band" sound. I would love to play bass for JT. Those songs would be a blast! Fishbone was Res' back up band on her first album btw.

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 00:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

like whats the difference in Fish playing with JT or Flaming Lips playing with Beck or Tom Verlaine playing with Mathew Sweet or Jim O'rourke playing with SY or Dave Lombardo playing with Mike Patton?

"I would love to play bass for JT."

I'd like to hit JT with a bass.

Standards, Chaki. Playing with teen poppers like the reprehensable Justin Timberlake may help pay the electric bill, but it hardly enhances one's credibility.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 01:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Justin is a good singer and its good that he's trying to keep Michael Jackson alive in his voice and dancing, he's just like Usher another Michael Jackson wannabe, at least when Michael Jackson dies his legacy will live on between these two pop stars

Quikmove, Wednesday, 6 November 2002 13:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 13:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 14:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Justin is a good singer..."

No, actually, he's not.

"....and its good that he's trying to keep Michael Jackson alive in his voice and dancing...."

No, sorry, that's not good either, actually. In fact, it's bad. Even if you *LIKE* Michael Jackson (which -- SURPRISE -- I don't), it's bad. We already have a Michael Jackson (unfortnately), why do we need another? We can't Justin find his own style?

"....he's just like Usher another Michael Jackson wannabe,"

I'll give you that one.

"at least when Michael Jackson dies his legacy will live on between these two pop stars."

By saying that, you are equating their talents -- asserting that Justin and/or Usher's work will fill the much-needed voided that Michael Jackson's untimely demise will create. As much as I loathe Michael Jackson, I can at least spot his (ever-diminishing) talent and recognize its originality, whereas Justin and Usher are merely appropriating, making their efforts that much more reprehensible.

Good lord, did I just defend Michael Jackson? Time for some coffee.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 6 November 2002 16:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

That, incidentally, should be "WHY can't Justin find his own style." My spelling is going the way of all flesh.

This song, video, performance inspired me to start learning to be a better dancer. Everyone at uni would look for me to dance when this track came on. I watched the video over and over. I was one with Justin's (narrowly) best song, and I ended up loving Off The Wall and Thriller even more than I thought possible.

Still, Usher has to kick his ass. JT took so much from him, right down to the older woman.

To the UK: Justin HATES you (link updates regularly so I shall also cut and paste):

TIMBERLAKE PUNCHED IN THE FACE
Pop star Justin Timberlake was punched in the face by a fan as he walked into his end-of-tour party in London on Sunday.

The hunky singer was reportedly hit as he entered the Rex Club in Soho following the last date in his British tour, so he refused to come out and meet his many female fans waiting outside the venue for fear he would again be assaulted.

A source says, "All the girls were outside waiting for him and someone went to ask his people if he was coming out to sign autographs.

"One of his minders came out and said that Justin wouldn't be coming out. He said someone had hit him in the face as he went inside. Apparently he got a real crack as he walked in the place and he was worried he might get attacked again."

Inside the venue Justin told reporters, "It is just crazy over here in Britain, I f-- hate coming over here."

I knew that airline pass would come in handy.
