Top 3 album in the UK. i don't think anyone saw that coming. they sound like Madder Rose to my ears. nice though. is this the bigest indie band of the last few years not to have their own thread?
anyway this one's my fave

There was talk about starting a dedicated thread in the Rolling 2015 Favorites thread, but it never happened I guess.
I've already made the point a dozen times that I thought the 7" version of "Bros" was one of my favorite indie rock guitar heavy songs of the last few years, and now I'm mad at the band not for re-recording it (it's their song, they can do whatever they want with it even though the new version sucks), but for removing all traces of the superior earlier version from steaming platforms and digital retailers. Eff you, Wolf Alice!
I still haven't listened to the album. Outside of the original "Bros" and "Moaning Lisa Smile," I think they're a band that's pretty long on sounding good but pretty short on writing good songs.
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 4 July 2015 19:42 (eight years ago) link
Listening now to the album: hmm, okay, some of these songs are really nice. "Freazy" in particular.

― Mark G, Sunday, 5 July 2015 12:09 (eight years ago) link
Bits of this sounded really lumpen and uninspired in the way you expect from basically 100% of hyped Brit rock bands these days but then a song would just suddenly explode into a joyous pop moment. Jury's out but if they could put together an entire album as good as those best bits they'd be incredible.
― Matt DC, Sunday, 5 July 2015 12:41 (eight years ago) link
if they could put together an entire album as good as those best bits they'd be incredible.
Exactly how I feel, although we might have different ideas about the best bits.
I'm not surprised this charted so high (in the UK). I had been looking forward to this, but I am mostly disappointed. Too much of the material drags excessively (including "Your Loves Whore"). My favorites remain "Giant Peach" and "Moaning Lisa Smile." Maybe "Fluffy." "Turn to Dust" is nice, but I'm on the fence about it. "You're a Germ" is fine, though it seems a bit demo-ish. "Bros" is pretty good, but the earlier version was better, even if I can't remember exactly what it sounded like. I need to listen to this some more, but that's the thing: I'm finding it a bit of a slog.

― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Monday, 6 July 2015 12:52 (eight years ago) link
Listening to it now, and the thing that strikes me is how it feels like it's barely there, until it shifts gears. around 3:30. A lot of this is down to Roswell's vocal delivery.
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 6 July 2015 13:18 (eight years ago) link
I guess the vocals are meant to sound intimately conversational?
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 6 July 2015 13:20 (eight years ago) link
that giant peach song rules
― kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 6 July 2015 13:53 (eight years ago) link
Peachy is riffs galore, and I like how it gets all Sonic Youth at around 3:05 (singles version, not the one I linked to above). I also can't help hearing echoes of the Psychedelic Furs' "India" at around 1:15, but that's probably just a personal problem. I hear as much of the 80s in it as the 90s.
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 6 July 2015 14:13 (eight years ago) link
I would have preferred if they hadn't made Roswell's vocals on that song sound like the Go-Go's or whatever they are going for there, not that I hate that sound, but her natural vocal sound suits the song better.
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 6 July 2015 14:15 (eight years ago) link
I'm listening to the album and it's pretty funny how this is almost structured to divide ILX, but honestly I think it's better for having the pop side and the more trad US underground rock style
― kurt kobaïan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 6 July 2015 15:05 (eight years ago) link
I don't think of myself as very rock oriented at all, but I like Wolf Alice better in rocking mode. (Almost everything else I've liked this year has been dance pop, indie pop, hipster pop shit, etc.)
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 6 July 2015 15:11 (eight years ago) link
You could have a point in general though. If more of ILX pays any attention to this band, that might become clearer.
So wait there are THREE versions of "Bros?"
― Wimmels, Tuesday, 7 July 2015 18:56 (eight years ago) link
Oh I guess one of these is a remix of some sort. Not sure where this came from but I have it in my iTunes for some reason. Anyone know where this is from? It's pretty nice...

I don't really get the love for this, it felt stodgy and uninspired, except for the bits that weren't, which were brilliant. Shame there weren't that many of them. I fully expect them to make an amazing second or third album.
― Matt DC, Sunday, 10 April 2016 15:19 (seven years ago) link
I listened to the album again, inspired by this thread revival, and I still find it hard to get through it. But I still love individual songs and performances, especially some of the live ones. I am hopeful about their next album. I still tend to prefer their rocking material to their more pop-oriented stuff, though, so that could be a problem, if they really intend to head more toward pop.
― _Rudipherous_, Sunday, 10 April 2016 15:23 (seven years ago) link
I suspect its their live shows that is really building their momentum at this point.
― _Rudipherous_, Sunday, 10 April 2016 15:33 (seven years ago) link
Really? I think the album's amazing. It feels like a living thing.
What would you consider their pop-oriented material other than Freazy? Everything other than that is rock, yes? And last I heard, they weren't even playing Freazy live because they just didn't know what to do with it.
― how's life, Monday, 11 April 2016 13:59 (seven years ago) link
Just checked that last statement and I guess they have played it live, but I thought I read an interview with them where they admitted to not being comfortable with how it fit into their sets.

I like some of the non-rock songs on the album, but a lot of them feel like filler and are difficult for me to make it through. "Freazy" is one of the better ones. I also like "Turn to Dust" (though I'm always a little ambivalent about her mannered delivery there). "Bros" is okay. A little too much like the Sundays. I wish I had a copy of the earlier version Johnny Fever keeps mentioning, since I liked it better though I don't remember exactly what it sounded like at this point. I don't really like the low-energy vocals on most of "Your Loves Whore."
Songs that really lose me: "Lisbon" (and wait, this one is pretty rock), "Silk" (I just realized part of this reminds me of MIA) although I feel like there are various pieces here I could like if they were rearranged, "Swallowtail" (this is what happens when you give someone else a chance to sing), "Soapy Water," and "The Wonderwhy."

i mean, i feel like they sorta have three modes: aggressive and sludgy, dreamy and shimmery, and the few songs that occupy the center of that venn diagram ("your loves whore"/"lisbon"?). what surprised me about my love is cool is that it still seemed to maintain an individual sensibility even as it careened between these styles?

Yeah, the stylistic shifts were jarring to me at first, especially Swallowtail and Freazy. But I grew to like the whole thing pretty quickly. The variety makes it work well as an album.

Was just going to say something like this, though I hadn't figured out how to describe their modes. I don't think their is such outrageous variety in their work at all. The latest song sounds of a piece with similar tracks on their first album. I like it much better than Yuk Foo, but not sure how much I like it as such.

Apparently their U.S. distributor fucked up the vinyl pre-orders, in case you are a USian who did that. Can't wait to listen to this first thing in the morning on Spotify, in any case.

― piscesx, Thursday, 28 September 2017 21:34 (six years ago) link
Maybe not so surprising. I haven't heard the whole album yet but to my ears "Beautifully Unconventional" sounds pretty classic rock, without even stretching the term.
― _Rudipherous_, Friday, 29 September 2017 05:49 (six years ago) link
yeah not surprised on Mojo nod - this is about as good as rock records get. The new one is less superficially heavy than the first album, but they've found new ways to incorporate barbed riffs into mellower songs and seemed to find more of a consistent middle ground between heavy/sublime here. This record flows great

I'm loving this on first listen. Nobody in the US seems to know who they are, but it's their loss. I'm glad to see they avoided the sophomore jinx.

I hate to say it but I'm once again ambivalent about the album as a whole. I still need to gives it some more listens. There best work is getting better, however. Planet Hunter is probably my favorite Wolf Alice song so far. I'd rather see them combining their modes, like that, rather than working very dreamy some of the time and very screamy the other part of the time. Not too thrilled with the mostly spoken sections either. Once again, Ellie is a solid enough vocalist that she should be singing rather than speech-singing, and preferably without a ton of effects.
― _Rudipherous_, Saturday, 30 September 2017 23:49 (six years ago) link
Listening to Planet Hunter again and I find it hard to believe this song even exists as a new song in 2017. Instant classic.

I was looking forward to this album despite not really enjoying the first one, because you could see the potential was there for them to do something really great, and this sounded terrific on first listen.
― Matt DC, Sunday, 1 October 2017 11:50 (six years ago) link
It's an uneven record (the downside of going for variety, laudable as that is) - and yeah too much reverb - but "Beautifully Unconventional" and the last three songs are all fantastic.

'Sadboy' doesn't sound as great as it should, and 'After the Zero Hour' is a bit of a snoozer, but 'Heavenward', 'Yuk Foo', 'Don't Delete the Kisses', 'Planet Hunter', 'Space and Time' and the title track are all great.

I can see 'Formidable Cool' and 'St. Purple & Green' growing on me further - but aside from some shonky production here and there and one out-and-out stinker, it's a good record.

― Week of Wonders (Ross), Tuesday, 10 October 2017 20:39 (six years ago) link
I love pretty much the whole album. It took me a while to get on board with some of the songs but after a few listens really began to enjoy them all - Sky Musings included, which feels like one of the songs off the last Grimes record to me. The only thing that's jarring to me is the chorus of Beautifully Unconventional. The verse and prechorus are both amazing and catchy, but the chorus I just don't get where they're coming from.
― how's life, Wednesday, 11 October 2017 10:28 (six years ago) link
I forgot how amazing Planet Hunter is. They really deserve credit for amazing songs like this, even if the album is uneven. Lots of classic rock acts who recorded great songs seem pretty uneven to me on the album level. This songs takes me back to older feelings about life (having basically nothing to do with the lyrics).

― piscesx, Saturday, 2 December 2017 01:24 (six years ago) link
it's not an uneven album, it just feels like two very distinct directions that don't meet anywhere in the middle. I don't dislike "Yuk Foo" but when you've got something as incredible as "Don't Delete The Kisses" in your oeuvre I don't know why wouldn't follow further down that road.
― boxedjoy, Saturday, 2 December 2017 10:23 (six years ago) link
'Yuk Foo' is just fine where it is - the 90s alt-rock records this reminds me of would roam all over the place. 'Siamese Dream' wouldn't work if it wasn't equal parts 'Quiet' and 'Mayonaise' and this feels like it's trying to capture the spirit of records like that, even if the lyrical approach is totally different. 'Don't Delete The Kisses' is amazing but other bands could offer you a whole album's worth of that, and probably will.
It's a great record but it's the abrupt turn into more florid territory from 'Sadboy' onwards that really makes it for me. It reminds me a bit of 'Ritual De Lo Habitual' in that regard, in which it seems content to play it at least vaguely straight for a long time and then throws everything it has at you.

Katherine and piecesx, I thought about this conversation while listening to the Melkbelly record. Have you guys checked them out? Their singer sounds like Kristin Hersh (50 Foot Wave-era) to me. Others on the thread are pointing more towards Kim/Kelly Deal, but when you add in the melodies, I think a Hersh comparison is undeniable.

Sadboy was the track it took me the longest to like from the new one, but after about 5 listens I glommed on. When I saw them last week, it felt like the drummer started it off at the wrong tempo: way too slow. About halfway through the song, when the downtuned vocals and sing-along come in, it all came together and hit hard. That beginning part must be a little tricky to get the vibe right. Only song they played where I felt taken out of it. Everything else was killer.

Just relistened to my love is cool and it blows the new one out of the water. The highs on the latest are indeed wonderful but there’s a consistency lacking in style, the first record juggles sweet, heavy and jagged so much better while the new one feels like a greatest hits of their styles with some new (don’t delete the kisses) directions thrown in

I think they're both very good albums. They're at a stage now where either their best work is still ahead of them or they've already shot their bolt. Given what they're capable of at their best, I'm hoping its the former. It'll probably be the latter, though.

A nice antidote to all the hoo-ha about the Reading and Leeds line up being rubbish, last night on the BBC; an hour of Wolf Alice headlining the Radio 1 stage. Storming gig, band on fire, all the hits, fancy lights, disco balls, glitter, the whole bit. I agree with Simon that it seems like a weird 1st single choice, but my impression is that they're giving us a taste of what the album will be like. It's very much a home stretch, end-of-side-b kind of song, and it could easily be a final track, but we know from the track listing that it's the third from the end, so my speculation is that the final two songs will be a real tour-de-force. I dunno, that's just me talking out of my ass.
Don't agree with Brad that it's the best goddamn song they've ever made, but it is definitely a goddamn good song. I listened to it like 6 times in a row too! My thought on that was that it felt unnaturally short to me, if that makes sense? Like, it runs 4:30, which is pretty decent length by pop songs standards, but I felt like I was only in it for 3 minutes or so, and so I kept going back to listen again.
Anyway, I'm stoked. Really happy that they're still together making music. Can't believe that it's almost 4 years since Visions of a Life.

Dravs's first big notable gig was doing the sound design for Derek Jarman's "Blue" (credited to Markus Draws I think). He became Eno's right-hand-man for a while, doing more-than-half the work on James's "Wah Wah", which was the album that inspired AF to hire him for Neon Bible onward. Coldplay had a "we love AF" moment and picked Dravs/Eno to do Viva La Vida, then Dravs was subsequently drafted by Mumford & Sons and Florence; Dravs won a Grammy for the former, iirc. Maybe another one, too, same band or something else. He has another arranger above me on his rolodex (the guy from Goldfrapp, who did Viva La Vida etc.) but we have great personal rapport and I love working with him, I think he's an amazing producer tbh.

“It’s about the arrogance of humans,” said Rowsell, explaining the lyrics. “I’d just read Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle and I had written the line ‘Peculiar travel suggestions are dancing lessons from god’ in my notes. But then I thought: ‘Uh, your peculiar travel suggestion isn’t a dancing lesson from god, it’s just a travel suggestion! Why does everything need to mean something more?’”
i don't mean to start stanning for this band but this is exactly what i'd write a song about

it was cool that the pre-release tracks didn't really reveal what the album was going for much, like only "the last man on earth" hinted at it, and even though i enjoy it a lot more in the context of the album it feels a bit more obvious than the rest in its big dramatic build etc.

― So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 15 June 2021 22:13 (two years ago) link
Damn, astute observation Alfred! It's one of my favorite songs from the album.
I'm still really loving this record and Wolf Alice is one of my favorite bands from the last decade. One thing I'll say is that the lyrics seem like they've taken a different turn? Ellie seems to be in a more straightforward writing phase, whereas when I listen back to stuff from My Love Is Cool, her lyrics seemed to have a more poetic bent. I don't think this is to the detriment of the songs in any way. The exception being Feeling Myself, which I love musically, but feels way too on-the-nose for me. I think she had mentioned in one of their recent interviews how after the Visions of a Life tour, she had trouble starting to write again.
idk, I love Blue Weekend a lot and am still listening to it regularly, but just wanted to see if anyone else felt that way about it.

Yeah, just listened to the new version of Last Man on Earth. For the record, I am not tiring of all the new versions of Last Man on Earth. The changes in the arrangement are always subtle, but I still get into it.
It sounds like the rest of the EP will also be stripped-back versions of album cuts.
No word yet on a physical release, so I'm guessing this will just be a digital thing.
