that seems like a big deal

Spottie, Thursday, 2 February 2017 20:44 (seven years ago) link

i guess ilan rubin might be a better drummer technically than farro but farro's work has a pretty specific personality that i missed on the s/t initially. his fills on "ignorance" are wild imo

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 2 February 2017 20:47 (seven years ago) link

also idk what happened but his playing generally leveled-up on brand new eyes in every way imo, all of those drum tracks are furious

Drumming on "ignorance" is insane good.

Tim F, Thursday, 2 February 2017 21:32 (seven years ago) link

yeah, his drumming helps make that record, along with that big overblown production that for some reason I hated on every other '00s rock record except that one

I don't think they'd cover up the end of a romantic relationship by saying really mean things about how Hayley ran and controlled the band (and also how unchristian she was) so I doubt that's why they left the band.

abcfsk, Thursday, 2 February 2017 21:58 (seven years ago) link

I don't think they'd cover up the end of a romantic relationship by saying really mean things about how Hayley ran and controlled the band (and also how unchristian she was)

oh yeah i'm realllly abbreviating history there but idk i think a huge reason they left is that literally every lyric on brand new eyes is kinda like "fuck u josh"

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 2 February 2017 22:00 (seven years ago) link

also from what i remember about it at the time the farro bros "we're leaving the band" letter was super like... terrible bad faith shit

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 2 February 2017 22:02 (seven years ago) link

tbh maybe my idea of why they left was baseless speculation at the time and i've just carried that in my head for so long that i thought it was true so nm

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 2 February 2017 22:03 (seven years ago) link

I didn't follow the personal drama b/c I'm too old and indifferent but the fact they made their best album without those dudes has gotta burn a little. Paramore was good precisely because it was the kind of record they probably couldn't have made with two devout Warped Tour loyalists in the band

Evan R, Thursday, 2 February 2017 22:08 (seven years ago) link

Reminds me--on a much, much larger scale--of what happened with Q and Not U back in the day. They were a good band, then they dumped their bassist and made a big show of how they'd dumped their bassist and it really seemed to energize them and open the door to all sorts of new possibilities. This was like that but on more of a Fleetwood Mac scale

Evan R, Thursday, 2 February 2017 22:10 (seven years ago) link

xp I think the lyrics point to that intimate conflict and also more generally about the tension in the band, sometimes specifically so ("I can't believe we almost hung it up", and then some of them did, but the album pretends they can move on as long as the last jabs are hers (re 'fuck u josh' and maybe 'fuck you zac and, jeremy, and i'm not so great either (but taylor seems like he's always been the nice guy))

Echoing the love for Farro's BNE drums and hope there's some aggression on the new album to make use of them

yeah this is a more accurate portrait of what's going on in that record

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 2 February 2017 22:14 (seven years ago) link

The way she prods at and questions her faith in the band and Faith in general on BNE in a really aggressive way, like some hurt T Rex, over these machine gun drums and pop punk emo makes it one of my favorite _pop_ albums in general, so full of drama.

abcfsk, Thursday, 2 February 2017 22:15 (seven years ago) link

Yeah it's funny how the ostensibly very positive lyrics on "Looking Up" - at least when appearing on the same album as "Ignorance" and "Playing God" and "Feeling Sorry" - can come off as really patronising and dismissive.

V much into this

abcfsk, Wednesday, 19 April 2017 13:05 (six years ago) link

This slams.

how's life, Wednesday, 19 April 2017 13:09 (six years ago) link

thinking about this as it relates to "now," where a band that slipped into being a new wave emo trio wanted to reconnect to their past and write an older, rockier paramore song and the final construction is a really awkward frankenstein's monster, whereas this seems to push what they were doing on "ain't it fun" into a space where there are even fewer obvious referents to rock and emo

also taylor york really loves writing those spiky, fractional guitar riffs that would be marginalia or embellishment in other bands songs and centering them

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 19 April 2017 13:22 (six years ago) link

been hearing a lot of songs with either lackluster or missing bridges lately so i'd like to give it up for the bridge in this song, especially the weird synth/strings(?) tremble

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 19 April 2017 13:23 (six years ago) link

(i can't really say much but) from what i've heard they're really going for it with this album

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 19 April 2017 13:37 (six years ago) link

First thoughts listening to the song:

1. This is wonderful
2. I don't want to hear a whole album of this

It lays it on quite thick. And guessing from the album cover it's not a one-off :/

Evan R, Wednesday, 19 April 2017 14:19 (six years ago) link

first single from the s/t was "now" so i'd say it was less than perfect

"Now" ruled, and it was kind of a perfect lead single to the extent that there really was no one, completely representative song from that album, so you might as well just toss something quick and striking out there. ("Ain't It Fun" was the album's takeaway single, but it wouldn't have been as big of a hit if it had been released first; it needed time).

Anyway, so I'd been hoping "Hard Times" would be like "Now," a one-off stylistic tangent on another album filled with them. But that cover screams "nah we're all in on this lol Duran Duran vibe."

Evan R, Wednesday, 19 April 2017 14:23 (six years ago) link

"now" ruling is revisionist history, much as i've grown to like it ok contextually bc the album hanging around it rules

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 19 April 2017 14:26 (six years ago) link

feel like i'm more likely to hear "still into you" than "ain't it fun" in the wild in 2017 but this is based on anecdotal evidence

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 19 April 2017 14:27 (six years ago) link

In my experience, it's the reverse.

I'm hoping for a variety of styles on the album as well.

how's life, Wednesday, 19 April 2017 14:31 (six years ago) link

also i hate to be like "read the tea leaves to determine the mood of the record" but that ascap leak upthread implies aaron weiss is on this record and i can't imagine him sing-talking over exposé's "point of no return"

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 19 April 2017 14:31 (six years ago) link

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Wednesday, 19 April 2017 14:34 (six years ago) link

Foals comparison otm, though Foals never quite pushed the sound into shtick territory the way this song (also video, album cover) does

Evan R, Wednesday, 19 April 2017 14:38 (six years ago) link

foals never wrote a song this good let's all relax

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 19 April 2017 14:42 (six years ago) link

I was in love with "Now" at first exposure, because I kinda dug dance-punk back in the day, and the track pulled off the trick of improving on that style by adding some extra tension and mass, and putting a distinctive stamp on it with that very alterna-rock conclusion. Big song in a compact package, even if it was an odd singles choice.

I don't think this song improves on its inspirations in the same way, though it does personalize them in a similar way. Song seems strangely cynical in a way, like this is their attempt to "Uptown Funk" Dire Straits

Evan R, Wednesday, 19 April 2017 14:46 (six years ago) link

If anything, I would say it's their attempt to "Get Lucky" the Talking Heads, but it's better than that imo.

I def doubt the whole album will sound same-y. Unless the band completely changed since s/t (I mean they have changed, Farro is back, even co-writing some tracks, but that certainly does not suggest everything sounding like this). Modern Paramore is very much a group that feels playful and eager to explore the border between pop and rock in all kinds of ways.

Two quick observations: drummer has some fallback hi-hat on the 2 and 4 beats, and guitarist really likes those little African-esque licks. Both of which work, to my ears.

Fake Happy is my immediate favourite. I love how those synths come in after that misleading intro.

No Friend is the only one I'm not really into. I don't think they really pulled off what they were going for. It's the only misfire on the album though, everything else sounds so good.

kitchen person, Thursday, 11 May 2017 14:09 (six years ago) link

think of "no friend" as a dark inverse coda to "idle worship" bc... well, it is, but i think those are the terms on which it works

k3vin k., Thursday, 11 May 2017 19:05 (six years ago) link

I get the gist of Caramanica's review; he pretty much voices all of my initial reservations about this album (too schticky, a waste of a great rock singer). I do think the tone is off, though. He isn't really giving the band any credit for their range (he brushes off the s/t album), and seems to box them in with a style of music they aren't interested anymore. It shouldn't be any great shock that bands can evolve over 10 years

Evan R, Thursday, 11 May 2017 19:26 (six years ago) link

and using synths isn't a touchstone of '80s bands (also, after three listens, I don't hear an egregious use of synths; they're more for the occasional garnish).

First listen to this, and it was really disheartening. I'm sure it will grow on me, because the songs are solid and Hayley brought her A game. But I find the whole Wedding Singer cosplay thing insufferably tacky, and all those brittle '80s polyrhythms just sound shitty and one-trick to me.

Evan R, Friday, 12 May 2017 13:05 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I really like the sequencing here, how it starts with all the knockout backyard barbecue tracks and gradually works its way into sprawlier ("less grounded," in Caramanica speak) territory. "No Friend" does so much to anchor the record; I'm so glad they didn't cut it.

tbh I'd like this album a ton more if it had like, another 10-20 minutes of material on it, even uneven material, just to better balance that big mass of polyrhythmic 80s stuff and put it in perspective. That was part of what i loved about the s/t one, how it worked as both a pop record and an exploratory endeavor. But historically most of their albums have been pretty lean so I guess this is a return to form in that way

I'm impressed that Williams and York are the only credited writers. Not that I thought they were at all incapable, just that they didn't go the lazy (imo) Taylor Swift route and hire a ringer to make their transformation, just (like Haim) a really sympathetic and intuitive producer.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 14 May 2017 20:48 (six years ago) link

xpost I only think the Taylor Swift move was lazy because she was an established successful crossover songwriter herself (mediocre or no), but when she decided to go big she picked a team that would churn out hits whether she was involved or not. Like, they did not need her, they've written dozens of huge hits with little or no input from the artist. This Paramore album, though, I find it sort of inspiring (or something less strong) that the band itself (like the 1975, to an extent) proves so capable of big pop songs without relying on one of the usual suspects.

I'm not saying Swift's lazy move was wrong, as such. But I think music like Paramore and Haim has so much more personality - Aint It Fun, still, and Hard Times, they sound so refreshing - and I would have been interested in hearing Swift, had she not hired out for hits, try to do the same all by herself.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 14 May 2017 20:50 (six years ago) link

I don't know, it's just personal preference, but I find Max Martin so big, boxy and heavy handed - joyless, really - but stuff like this, Haim and the 1975 is so wonderfully light on its feet.

Second that I think her singing is great on this. Can't explain why, but I keep thinking of someone like David Byrne singing "Forgiveness" or "Hard Times."

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 14 May 2017 20:53 (six years ago) link

Yeah. Comparing this to Hella Good, which this reminds me of DON'T AT ME - just underlines what an amazing singer she is

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 14 May 2017 21:01 (six years ago) link

Hayley's lyrics (and performance of them) are so declaratory that she's risk slipping into hectoring if her vocals weren't so endlessly nuanced and expressive.

I think it seems weak at first because Hayley sits further back in the mix and sounds relatively anonymous-shiny (for her), but after xxxx number of listens I've decided this is an aesthetic decision intended to create this charming Haim meets School of Seven Bells effect.

Oh good, I thought I was being crazy when I heard some modern country moves on the choruses of some of these songs. I need to listen to this. It's not the sort of thing I want to listen to in the background while I'm online (since the English lyrics will be too distracting). I think the best thing for me to do is buy a copy and listen in the car.

Caught in the Middle feels like a No Doubt album cut. While I like the idea of Paramore going ska, I wish there was more of a chorus. 26 is amazing though! At first I didn't think it lived up to Hate to See Your Heartbreak for me, as far as Paramore country attempts go, but sonically, it really feels like a lost Taylor Swift ballad circa Fearless or Speak Now.

Let the record reflect that I was OTM about "Grudges" upthread.

I think I'm the only one here who hates the new album, but would they still be worth seeing if I'm not into the new stuff? They're coming in December but I don't think I can take 90 minutes of polyrhythmic beach party Paramore

Evan R, Thursday, 5 October 2017 15:07 (six years ago) link

There are a lot of videos and setlists available from the tour. They are playing plenty of older stuff.

I had tickets to their DC show, but found out a couple weeks ahead of time that I couldn't make it. Put my tickets up for sale online and no one bought them. There were several other sellers there, all seemingly trying desperately to unload tickets and taking losses at the last minute. As far as I know none of them sold. This was my first time trying to sell tickets online, so I don't know if this is the usual experience, but I would have thought there would have been more demand for Paramore in a 3,000-seater.

how's life, Thursday, 5 October 2017 15:13 (six years ago) link

Fake Happy is my favourite song on the album. Hope it can do an Ain't It Fun and give them a slow burning hit single. I'm still in shock at the commercial performance for this album. It should be huge.

kitchen person, Friday, 17 November 2017 17:32 (six years ago) link

I think the album is fine for what it is but a pretty poor use of this band and Hayley William's vast skill set. It definitely doesn't sound like it should be huge to me, the charts weren't really clamoring for a bunch of polyrhymic 80s throwbacks. Most of it just feels kinda silly and disposable to me; it doesn't have the heft or longevity of the three albums before it.

Evan R, Friday, 17 November 2017 17:50 (six years ago) link

I'm still hoping there are a bunch of outtakes from these sessions that eventually see daylight. I respect that they opted to make a fairly tight record, but after the four year wait between albums this just feels slight and incomplete to me

New Hayley interview! This podcast focuses on beauty/makeup and Hayley's on there to promote her latest GoodDyeYoung product, but she talks a lot of Paramore as well.. About halfway through they get DEEP into skincare products which I found interesting but is alien territory for me so I haven't finished the ep yet. But she has a good rapport with the interviewer. The conversation feels honest and open and friendly and not very press junket-ish, which some of the other AL-cycle interviews suffer from.

I have no idea if people actually listen to this band. Was this album a hit? A flop? Have they toured behind it? Just festivals? Clearly they are still releasing singles.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 20:39 (six years ago) link

it was a flop, they have toured and are touring behind it

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 6 February 2018 20:40 (six years ago) link

And yet, pretty sure they never hit Chicago! I mean, they might have been at Riot Fest? But I was shocked they never played a standalone show here, if that was it.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 20:42 (six years ago) link

Seems like it was a flop in the Melodrama sense, where maybe it underperformed a bit commercially but it was also enormously well-received and probably cemented their fanbase for many, many years to come.

Saw their winter show (sold out, I think) and the good will for the band was just through the roof.

Evan R, Tuesday, 6 February 2018 21:02 (six years ago) link

yeah i was less worried about their health as a band after seeing them on this tour (at a sold out radio city). i think after "still into you" and "ain't it fun" were big pop hits that really leaning hard into that direction made sense... but given how hard it is for any rock band to get consistent traction in pop i'm also not surprised it didn't catch. will be interesting to see where they go next having given this route their best effort.

eight months pass...

Hayley Williams always knew her debut solo album, Petals for Armor, would be a detour, but she still felt anxious about getting Paramore back together after several years apart. But on the first day she, Taylor York, and Zac Farro reconnected at a Nashville studio space, those nerves quickly melted into relief.

“We wrote and tracked something we loved and it actually surprised us,” Williams tells Rolling Stone in an email. “We kept joking it was all downhill from that point, but thank God we’ve been surprised a lot throughout this whole thing. I’m always waiting for the moment for us to know we’re onto something new and we’re not just rehashing the same shit. It was ‘Ain’t It Fun’ for our self-titled record, and ‘Hard Times’ or ‘Told You So’ for After Laughter. It’s not about it feeling like a hit so much as it’s a scary, exciting feeling that you’re treading uncharted waters. It keeps you curious. We got to feel that feeling early on this time.”

As for the album’s sound, Williams says she and York had been reminiscing on some of their earliest influences well before they began writing the LP. But she’s quick to note that that doesn’t necessarily mean the group is necessarily plotting a “comeback ‘emo’ record.”

“The music we were first excited by wasn’t exactly the kind of music we went on to make,” Williams says. “Our output has always been all over the place and with this project, it’s not that different. We’re still in the thick of it but some things have remained consistent from the start. 1) More emphasis back on the guitar, and 2) Zac should go as Animal as he wants with drum takes.”

Yeah, it's interesting because they officially retired it in 2018, haven't done anything as a band since then, and Hayley made a point about it in 2020 when Spotify included MizBiz on some women in rock playlist. So it must be a case of the right person asking her. And they did sound fucking good together!

There's also ALL. THE. ATTENTION. the song has received in the past few years, with Willow Smith, Olivia Rodrigo, and Machine Gun Kelly all giving nods to Old Paramore.

I think I will save my disappointment for if Paramore The Band plays it live again.

They didn't officially retire it. She said they won't play it for a while. That they needed a break from it. So in fact they suggested it will be played again. And it probably should. Yeah it's mean in a not very modern way but it's also written by a teenager and true to that perspective. A song that good won't stay down.

abcfsk, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 12:04 (one year ago) link

Wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if they re-wrote the lyrics. During the Eilish performance and the After Laughter tours, Hayley would change it up by just covering her mouth for the word "whore", but left the rest of the lyrics intact. I think there's room for interpretations of a "misery business" that could be interesting, where they could hang different ideas on the basic framework.

peace, man, Tuesday, 26 April 2022 12:11 (one year ago) link

They could change it to "bore", or "chore"... alotta options.

In other news, despite it's modest chart performance, "Hard Times" has become quite the CVS Jam.

But yes, I hope for more Failure influence as well.

In her podcast today, Hayley mentioned that Bloc Party was in the mix of influences as well. I know Bloc Party at all, and I didn't pay enough attention to the songs of theirs that she played, so guess I'll have to go back and dig into that.

We started working on new material as a band over the last year and a half - you know, the three of us, Zac, Taylor and I - and I just want to say it, I don't even feel like it gives away very much...Bloc Party, from day one, was the number one reference because, it was like, there was such an urgency to their sound that was different from the fast punk or the pop punk or the loud wall-of-sound emo bands that were happening in the early 2000s.

Do any of you know what's behind long-ass album rollouts these days? There seem to be more of them lately, where the initial single will be released 5-6 months before the album comes out (see also Charli XCX's last album). I've seen people speculate that it is related to vinyl manufacturing delays. But if that's the case, why not just hold the single until it is closer to the time for the records to be ready?

peace, man, Wednesday, 28 September 2022 22:15 (one year ago) link

Yeah, I don't know what the strategy actually is supposed to be, but for me it feels like an album getting perpetually released over the course of several weeks/months, to the extent that when it actually does come out I sometimes miss it or forget to listen to it. Happened most recently with Beach House, maybe, and perhaps the Beths. I worry it will happen with this and the 1975. For sure it happened with the Hayley Williams solo album.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 28 September 2022 23:19 (one year ago) link

the 1975 have regularly done absurdly long rollouts which seems to be in significant part due to their own disorganisation, but they also love drip-feeding singles

paramore go on tour next week so i'd imagine they probably already had the tour booked & wanted to have new music out before then but the release got held up due to vinyl manufacturing delays & this is the compromise

both of those are different to the beach house/hayley solo album cases though where they were released essentially as a series of multiple EPs - idk what's with that as an approach, it's been common enough in recent years, but i can't think of anything where i've appreciated it

ufo, Thursday, 29 September 2022 05:03 (one year ago) link

opening 30 seconds sounds like poppy Broadcast. god if the rest of the album is even in that vein.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Thursday, 29 September 2022 06:51 (one year ago) link

ah they're not working with jmj this album, that's a shame - guess he's too busy with st vincent recently. it's being produced by carlos de la garza who engineered & mixed the last two + hayley's solo albums

ufo, Thursday, 29 September 2022 10:50 (one year ago) link

xxp: trying to line things up with tours could be a reasonable explanation. Another example that I heard people talking about was Muse. The first single off this year's album debuted in January, but the album wasn't released until August. However, it looks like their world tour started in April, so that scenario could make sense.

Anyway, back to Paramore.

It sounds to me like the guys are singing background on the chorus, but I'm not totally sure. Anyone else hear that?

Zac's drumming is great.

Add this to the long list of Paramore songs that use "falling" as a metaphor.

peace, man, Thursday, 29 September 2022 11:02 (one year ago) link

it looks like muse were just booked for all the summer festivals & probably would have liked to have been able to get the album out before them but couldn't. the dates before that were just a few promo shows it looks like. an eight month rollout is pretty silly yeah.

ufo, Thursday, 29 September 2022 11:13 (one year ago) link

― peace, man, Wednesday, September 28, 2022 6:15 PM (yesterday)

i don't think majors would severely alter plans for any important album over vinyl manufacturing. this is just a personal theory but i think artists started to see fewer and fewer returns on the surprise or one week timeline style album drop. i think when that idea was fresh it was a way to cut thru the noise and get attention on the album, i think at a certain point it became so common place that it stopped having the intended effect of bringing the music world to a screeching halt. ari lennox just a really short announcement to release plan and her album underperformed pretty severely. my sense is that labels/artists are starting to swing back in the other direction and feel like a steady drip of "content" is what is going to keep a new album in people's minds for more than 48 hours

J0rdan S., Thursday, 29 September 2022 16:59 (one year ago) link

That sucks about the Lennox album.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 29 September 2022 17:21 (one year ago) link

More acts should do what Trent Reznor did and just leave new songs on thumb drives in public bathrooms.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 29 September 2022 17:32 (one year ago) link

If you use a streaming service that brings to your attention new releases by artists you've listened to before (as Spotify does), then a steady drip of content is also going to bring the artist to the top of your "feed" and more occasions, resulting in a greater likelihood of you remembering to listen.

Isn't that an attempt to stop people constantly switching between streaming platforms? If you release episodes over more than five weeks, users will have to keep their subscription for more than a month, rather than bingeing it all in a month then switching over to another platform.

The Ghost Club, Thursday, 29 September 2022 23:01 (one year ago) link

The band wrote the album’s closing track, “Thick Skull,” a marked sonic departure from After Laughter, on day one. “It had these shades of a few different eras of us being music fans, loving heavy, drone-y, almost shoegaze-y moments,” says Williams, also citing York’s clashing guitar patterns, Farro’s thunderous bursts of drumming and even her own rare piano playing on the song. “I was like, ‘Man, this sounds like a band I would love.’ ”
