I ended up not getting around to submitting a ballot for this one - things got in the way - but looking forward to seeing how these results pan out.

No way is 'All Around The World' the worst Oasis song, though.

Bee OK, Thursday, 25 August 2016 00:29 (seven years ago) link

I think I've said something like this before, but if I were making the Oasis biopic, it would begin with a scene of Noel and Liam as kids, Liam feeling sad for being beaten up just because he acted like an asshole, Noel cheering him up by playing a new song he just wrote 'All around the world / gotta spread the word / you know it's gonna be okay.' 'You know Liam, one day we are going to be Rock and Roll stars, and we're going to turn this song into the biggest song ever. At several of the early shows they play stripped down versions of the song, at the recording of both Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory they're asked if they want to include the anthem. 'Not yet' says Noel. 'Not until we have the budget to make it fucking right.' The film culminates with a painstaking reconstruction of the recording process of All Around the World, done in black and white, cinema verité style, but also imitating the famous bell-making scene from Andrei Rublev (it goes without saying that my biopic is a 3 hour monster like Nixon or something). Final scene of film is a one-take of Noel, dejected, angry at Liam, coked out of his mind, feeling the dream has gone to shit, putting on the song, the masterpiece he dreamt about since he was a kid, and over 9 painfull minutes realizing just how bad it is, just how much he fucked it up. For the last couple of minutes he is bawling his eyes out, lying on the floor, snot coming out of his nose. Roll credits, soundtracked by Country House.

I agree, 'Sunday Morning Call' is a really awful song. Probably their weakest ever single, when I think about it.

AATW made my main ballot but lolllll at Fred's film treatment.

1. I would certainly watch that film, and you should make it.

2. I threw AATW down as my worst song. There are probably "worse" songs on the later albums that I couldn't put myself through, but as a harbinger of THE END that goes on for so fucking long (and a fucking reprise) AATW is an importantly bad song.

I'd totally watch that film!

There are worse songs on later albums, without a doubt. 'All Around The World' was one of the contenders for my main ballot.

Holding back on "Supersonic" comments, waiting for it in the main tracks rollout. But thinking of it as a debut, it really is a great calling card for the band. No "well, let's break you guys in with an easygoing crossover number, have you heard of Hootie and the Blowfish?" here.

Contrary to the track listing and clarified on subsequent releases (including The Masterplan), "I Am The Walrus" was not actually recorded at the Glasgow Cathouse, but at a conference for Sony music executives - the Gleaneagles Hotel Sony Seminar - who had gathered to hear Creation Records' new signings. Noel Gallagher stated that the band loved this particular live recording but were mortified to learn that it was made during a rehearsal at a corporate event. The band instead picked a venue from their tour schedule at which they had performed a similar sounding version, and added crowd noise taken from a Faces bootleg CD, in a bid to make it seem like an authentic tour recording.

I'm very surprised, because it's one of Oasis' best singles packages of that period, with 'Underneath The Sky', 'Step Out' and their best cover version ('Cum On Feel The Noize') on the B-sides. I think 'Don't Look Back In Anger' is a miles better song than 'Wonderwall', too. Always did.

Having said that, though, the 'Wonderwall' single is also one of their better singles packages: 'Round Are Way', 'The Masterplan' and the full version of 'The Swamp Song' on the B-sides.

Those that voted for the 'Live Forever' single were probably voting for the song and not the single. Aside from the lead track, it doesn't have much else to offer.

'D'Yer Wanna Be a Spaceman?', '(It's Good) To Be Free' and 'Headshrinker' are all (IMO) top notch, though. Noel's apparently been playing '(It's Good) To Be Free' quite a lot on his solo tours. However, there's nothing yet that I feel is too low or anything.

The cover of the single features the old Liverpool Speke Airport building. The airport is famous as the scene at which thousands of hysterical fans greeted The Beatles on their return to Liverpool at the height of Beatlemania. Derelict at the time, it has now been turned into a hotel. The aeroplane is an Avro Lancastrian.

RE: I'm Outta Time ]

The song has been noted as one of the highlights of the album by fans, as well as the band themselves, with guitarist Noel Gallagher labelling it "deceptively brilliant"...Although only peaking at number 48 in France, the song spent a total of 28 weeks in the French Singles Chart,[6] the most ever by any Oasis single.

The song was written by Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher, who has varyingly described the track as "specifically designed for pogoing", "annoyingly catchy", and the "poppiest thing since "Roll with It"". Noting the varied influences of the song, Gallagher says that it's "a bit like... The Soundtrack of Our Lives doing The Who on Skol in a psychedelic city in the sky, or something".

Yeah, this was one of the post-1998 Oasis tracks that I was expecting to turn up at some point, but even though I would never have voted for it I'm still surprised to see it so low, because it's probably one of their most popular late period tracks. It's pretty much the direction Noel seems to have followed for his High Flying Birds, too.

the hair - it's lost its energy (Turrican), Saturday, 27 August 2016 00:22 (seven years ago) link

I voted for "I Hope I Think I Know" for its energy and momentum (really piling one hooky bit on after another in the best Noel songwriting fashion) but it's also a classic case of a near-great song; as I noted previously it really only has two stanzas worth of verse, and it's four and a half minutes long. I think if Noel could have been bothered to write something, anything to make it feel like this song goes somewhere and is about something, it could have practically been the album's centerpiece and yeah would have made a fine single. Certainly better than "Stand By Me." I really love all the hooks in this and it's probably one of the Oasis songs that gets stuck in my head the most often - just wish there were more to it.

Have never understood anybody who dislikes "Bring It On Down" - feel like it's a really essential part of DM in terms of insisting on a certain wall-of-noise, band-from-the-rough-streets, basement club credibility. Probably the most convincingly raucous and grungey they ever got on record, and then Liam's voice cutting through it with a vocal ambiguously on the edge of identifying with the "you" in the lyric, and mocking them: You're the outcaaaaaast! The title line doesn't do much for me, kinda generic, and maybe it goes on a little too long, but it's great imho.

"Listen Up" - one of the best Masterplan discoveries for me and one I almost had forgotten about until this poll. Also wonderfully noisy and loud, but with that chorus riff sounding almost like a synth or something. Love Liam reaching for the "leEAVE you all behind." It's as much of a "young man with big feelings" Bildungsroman song as "Live Forever." Something the later Oasis almost by nature couldn't capture.

piscesx, Saturday, 27 August 2016 20:14 (seven years ago) link

Noel Gallagher states that the lyrics are taken from the world around him. For example, a Shaker Maker was a popular toy in the 1970s, the character of "Mr Soft" was taken from a Trebor Soft Mints commercial, which featured Cockney Rebel's song "Mr. Soft", "Mr. Clean" is a song by The Jam, one of Gallagher's favourite bands, Mr Benn is a British children's cartoon and the entire last verse - "Mr Sifter sold me songs/When I was just 16/Now he stops at traffic lights/But only when they're green" - was written in a taxi on the way to the recording studio to record the song. Apparently, Liam Gallagher was pestering Noel to finish the song. At this point, the taxi stopped at the traffic lights outside "Sifters" (a record shop on Fog Lane, Didsbury, Manchester), named after people 'sifting' through records and run by Peter Howard since 1977. Noel penned the lyric and it became part of the song. Noel used to frequent the store to buy old records before Oasis started releasing albums.

One of the B-sides, "Stay Young", has become a popular Oasis song, so much so that fans voted it onto the B-sides collection The Masterplan - one of only two B-sides from the Be Here Now period which made the album. The song was originally intended to be the "Digsy's Dinner" of Be Here Now (the lighthearted novelty track, such as "Digsy's Dinner" on Definitely Maybe and "She's Electric" on (What's the Story) Morning Glory?), until Noel set it aside in favour of "Magic Pie".

"Going Nowhere" - apparently Noel's attempt at a Burt Bacharach style song - can be found on The Masterplan, a collection of Oasis B-sides. It is one of only two B-sides from the Be Here Now era to be included on the album. Although it was not released until 1997, the song was written in 1990, before Noel even joined Oasis.

Bee OK, Saturday, 27 August 2016 21:23 (seven years ago) link

Bee OK, Saturday, 27 August 2016 21:35 (seven years ago) link

"Going Nowhere" WAY too low - had it as my #2! With or without the Bacharach-isms it just captures something really perfectly Oasis.

"Round Are Way" is good fun all round, very silly and maybe trying a little too hard to get its Penny Lane slice-of-life. But at least it has lyrics, and a great la-la-la-la-la part.

"Roll With It" though is pretty much trash except for the "I know the road down which your life will drive..." section which is at least more melodically interesting (with very solid backing vocals from Noel) and at least slightly less stupid lyrics. The chorus though is painful, the last thing I need is Liam Gallagher shouting life advice platitudes at me. When it comes back around at a minute and a half it's like, fuck, just end the song now. All the second half does is mark space out for more guitar solos and stuff but it's just, ugh, sorry, I really hate that song.

The B-side "Step Out" was originally intended for the (What's the Story) Morning Glory? album but was taken off after Stevie Wonder requested 10% of the royalties as the chorus bore a similarity to his hit "Uptight (Everything's Alright)". Also, because of this, Wonder, Henry Cosby and Sylvia Moy received credit for writing the song, along with Noel.

Noel Gallagher wrote this about The Verve lead singer Richard Ashcroft. He explained to Select magazine: "He always seemed to me to not be very happy about what was going on around him, almost trying too hard. That's why it goes, 'He was bound with the weight of all the words he tried to say.' I always felt he was born at the wrong place, and in the wrong place, and he was always trying to say the right things, but they came out wrong."

"I played him the song, and he nearly started crying," Gallagher continued. "I was like, 'Come on, hold yourself together, son! Easy now!'

"In a way, it's about all my friends who were in groups," he concluded. "We are bound with the weight of all the words we have to say. We're always looking for more."

"roll with it" i actually like, although there's something oddly un-oasis-like and generic about the tune -- feels like it could be any band. i mostly rated it for sentimental reasons -- still vividly remember how exciting it was to buy morning glory and sit through it for the first time.

In a 1997 interview promoting Be Here Now, Noel Gallagher had the following to say about the first single: "I was going to make up some profound statement in the chorus but I couldn't come up with anything that fitted. Then I just thought "All my people right here, right now, d'you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah." Very vague, very ambiguous, that'll do. Look in the mirror and wink while you're singing it and it's quite saucy. And I fucking love that line, 'Coming in a mess, going out in style'. We were a bunch of scruffs from Manchester and we're going out in a Rolls Royce."

Oasis as a band would be incomplete without "D'You Know What I Mean?" We might not notice its absence but their whole narrative would be different I think. It's the best version of the total steamrolling excess of Be Here Now, strong enough on pure swagger and massiveness that it sort of reshapes what's around it a little. Not enough to make it a great album but enough that I kept coming back and trying to like the rest more, like this is the mission statement and the rest was the failed attempt to carry out the mission.

Noel said of the song: "If 'The Shock of the Lightning' sounds instant and compelling to you, it's because it was written dead fast. And recorded dead fast. 'The Shock of the Lightning' basically is the demo. And it has retained its energy. And there's a lot to be said for that, I think. The first time you record something is always the best". It was described by NME as "a massively improved version of 'It's Gettin' Better (Man!!)'" and featuring "love is a litany/a magical mystery" as the song's chorus.

This song is about a girl that as time passes, the singer doesn't really care about anymore. Noel Gallagher explained to Select magazine: "The lyrics are just saying, 'Well, it's not about, be the same for us anymore, I suppose.'"

"It was written just towards the end of the Definitely Maybe sessions," he added. If Definitely Maybe was about dreaming about being in a band, this one is actually about being in a band. So it's like,'Hello, it's good to be back' - back making records."

The single artwork features a photograph of the band on the beach at Weston-super-Mare. Many potential locations were examined along the Somerset and Avon coastline (Oasis were playing Glastonbury that weekend, so a beach within striking distance of the festival site had to be found). In the background is the Grand Pier which burnt down in July 2008. This has made the original vinyl artwork (particularly the 12" single) highly collectible.

Oasis had been following in the footsteps of their idols The Beatles, who were photographed on the beach wearing Victorian bathing costumes in 1963

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 00:39 (seven years ago) link

this cover art has reminded me of this:

"Roll with It" received a great deal of attention when Food Records, the label of Britpop rivals Blur, moved the original release date of the single "Country House" to clash with it, sparking what came to be known as "The Battle of Britpop". The British media had already reported an intense rivalry between the two bands and this clash of releases was seen as a battle for the number one spot. The media sensation was spurred on by verbal attacks from the respective camps (in particular Noel and Liam Gallagher, Damon Albarn and Alex James), that extended beyond the music industry to the point where the two bands were regularly mentioned on the evening news. In particular, public imagination was sparked by the contrast between the gritty, working class Oasis and the artsy, middle class Blur. In the end, Blur's "Country House" single sold 274,000 copies to Oasis' 216,000 copies of "Roll with It". The singles charted at number 1 and number 2 respectively.

thinking a bit about Blur vs. Oasis today. Blur doesn't have a Definitely Maybe but Modern Life Is Rubbish is better than (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. Oasis had better B-Sides but blur had the better albums. blur was the better band but Oasis might have had higher peaks?

oasis has two classic albums (the first two) and a plethora of garbage

I liked both Blur and Oasis at the time, as well as many other bands. Many people liked both. I think the only people who care about the whole Blur vs. Oasis thing in 2016 are people who weren't there at the time that are under the impression that it was something important. The reality of it is that it was all forgotten about within a few months and it only reappeared as part of the narrative arc in a crap John Harris book. It certainly didn't harm anyone's career.

It's the same with this term "Britpop", which was nothing more than a media term to lump together a whole bunch of bands that didn't sound alike but happened to be from Britain. Over the last couple of years I've seen arguments and debates over what was or what wasn't Britpop and it's like "who gives a fuck?" ... nobody gave a fuck about it even at the time, aside from those in the media! Not once in the mid '90s did I ever hear any fucker say "Yeah, mate, fuckin' love Britpop, me" ... it was always "I really like (X band)" or "Yeah, love that song by (Y band)" ... or, "I like guitar music, none of this manufactured crap"

"Cigarettes & Alcohol" was the first single to demonstrate the rougher musical attitude that Oasis appeared to be promoting. The song proclaims the inherent appeal of cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs as a remedy to the banality and seemingly futile nature of the working class life. Lyrics such as "Is it worth the aggravation to find yourself a job when there's nothing worth working for?" taps into the common sentiment of western disenchantment that was particularly common in the mid-1990s.

Upon first hearing the song, the man who discovered the band, Alan McGee, claimed that the song was one of the greatest social statements anyone had made in the past 25 years.

"Talk Tonight" is one of many acoustic B-side tracks sung by Noel, and was at the time, the most vulnerable song he had ever attempted. It was inspired by the near-breakup of the band in Los Angeles in autumn 1994, when Noel walked out without telling anyone and headed for San Francisco. He stayed with a girl he had befriended during a previous show there. According to the sleeve notes to The Masterplan, she talked a distraught Noel "off the ledge" and took him to the park where she played as a child. It is also mentioned in the Oasis book by Paul Mathurs, Take Me There, that his friend also had an obsession with Snapple Strawberry Lemonade, which contributed to the line in the song, "all your dreams are made of strawberry lemonade."

Noel Gallagher explained that song's meaning to Melody Maker: "It's basically about people who think they're the voice of a generation, or the figurehead of a movement. It's just saying, 'Why are you lot down here looking up at him?' This band is about the music; it's about the songs. It's not about us."

"I wouldn't ever make a political speech, and I'd sack anyone in a band who started doing that," Gallagher continued. "We are overtly political once every five years, when we all go out and vote Labour. But then we turn around and go back to being a band again.

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 20:04 (seven years ago) link

i think he changed his mind from the early days. if i remember reading correctly Noel actually did get pretty political later on in the bands life?

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 20:10 (seven years ago) link

Gallagher claims that he was drunk while writing the song.[citation needed] According to him, parts of the song were inspired by walking while listening to a Walkman ("walking to the sound of my favourite tune") and using cocaine ("all your dreams are made / when you're chained to the mirror and the razor blade"), . It has been suggested that the song is about drug addiction in general ("need a little time to wake up/need a little time to rest your mind/you know you should so I guess you might as well").

The line "tomorrow never knows what it doesn't know too soon" seems to reference The Beatles' song "Tomorrow Never Knows", though Gallagher claims to have completely forgotten why he felt it was relevant to the song. Over the years, the song was regular on their live performance set.

Towards the end of "Morning Glory", a woman can be heard singing "without a lover to call your own". This is a snippet from a Soul II Soul track called "Love Enuff", which bleeds into track 11 on the Morning Glory album and was a hit in July 1995. Its unclear whether its inclusion is deliberate or not. The song's guitar riff closely resembles "The One I Love" by R.E.M.

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 20:19 (seven years ago) link

Noel Gallagher has regularly declared "The Masterplan" as one of the best songs he has ever written. However, he regrets the fact that it was first released as a mere B-side, admitting he was "young and stupid", when he made that decision. He also claims that Creation Records boss, Alan McGee, upon hearing the song, told Noel it was "too good" to be a B-side. Noel reportedly replied, "Well, I don't write shit songs!"

"Acquiesce" has become a fans' favourite and is regularly played live. Many Oasis fans feel this song should have been held back to go on the (What's the Story) Morning Glory? album, with others also feeling the song was strong enough to have been released as a single. This was an opinion that Alan McGee had when he first heard the song; he tried to convince Noel to release "Acquiesce" as a single instead of "Some Might Say". Noel rejected this idea because he was adamant that the work on the single was completed, and was unwilling to have to write another B-side and record it. However, Noel has since said that this and a couple of other songs such as "The Masterplan" were strong enough to have been album tracks and singles.

The first line: "I'm free to be whatever I, whatever I like if it's wrong or right it's all right," was written by Noel Gallagher about how his dad used to make him work on a building site with him as a teenager. Noel's dad tried to force him to become a builder.

The band knew this song was a hit as soon as Noel Gallagher first played it to them. Acquiesce was my number 1.

MarkoP, Sunday, 28 August 2016 22:32 (seven years ago) link

Some of the lyrics were written when I was out of it. There's the words: 'Someday you will find me/ Caught beneath a landslide/ In a Champagne Supernova in the sky'. That's probably as psychedelic as I'll ever get. It means different things when I'm in different moods. When I'm in a bad mood being caught beneath a landslide is like being suffocated. The song is a bit of an epic. It's about when you're young and you see people in groups and you think about what they did for you and they did nothing. As a kid, you always believed the Sex Pistols were going to conquer the world and kill everybody in the process. Bands like The Clash just petered out. Punk rock was supposed to be the revolution but what did it do? Fuck all. The Manchester thing was going to be the greatest movement on earth but it was fuck all. When we started we decided we weren't going to do anything for anybody, we just thought we'd leave a bunch of great songs. But some of the words are about nothing. One is about Bracket The Butler who used to be on Camberwick Green, or Chipley or Trumpton or something. He used to take about 20 minutes to go down the hall. And then I couldn't think of anything that rhymed with 'hall' apart from 'cannonball'. so I wrote 'Slowly walking down the hall/ Faster than a cannonball' and people were like, 'Wow, man'. There's also the line 'Where were you while we were getting high?' because that's what we always say to each other. But the number of people who've started clubs called Champagne Supernova is fucking unbelievable. And the album isn't even released yet.

The sleeve artwork was inspired by the paintings of the Belgian surrealist René Magritte, and was shot on Primrose Hill in north London. The hand holding the frame is that of art director Brian Cannon. The original idea was to have Liam in the frame before Noel vetoed that idea whilst the shoot was taking place. Instead a female figure was deemed necessary and Anita Heryet, a Creation Records employee, was asked to stand in as cover star for the shot.

"Supersonic" was written and recorded in a single day at The Pink Museum recording studio in Liverpool. The band were there to record "I Will Believe" but first, as a warm up, they started jamming together. Soon Noel Gallagher was humming a melody over McCarroll and Bonehead's rhythm until he called the jam to a halt as it was time to start recording "I Will Believe". The intended song was not going too well so it was decided that they work on something new, based on a jam they had had earlier that day. The recording was completed in 11 hours and it was never remixed.

The identity of "Elsa" has caused confusion. The lyrics say: She done it with a doctor/On a helicopter/she sniffin' in a tissue/Sellin' the Big Issue. Gallagher has remarked: "Someone told me "Supersonic" was about teenage prostitution. Shit!". It has since been revealed that Elsa was a nine-stone rottweiler with a flatulence problem. The dog belonged to the sound engineer Dave Scott and was in the studio on the day the song was written, hence the line "she's into Alka Seltzer".

Noel claims he wrote it on a Les Paul guitar that Johnny Marr sent to him, since he had few guitars available to him at the time. On the Definitely Maybe DVD, he also notes that he took Marr's guitar out of the case, sat down, and "the song wrote itself". Gallagher wrote it about his girlfriend at the time - Louise Jones and the song was written about their stormy relationship. He described them as "soulmates" and when they finally split up in June 1994, Noel said 'I don't think I'll ever get over it.'

Bee OK, Sunday, 28 August 2016 23:58 (seven years ago) link

It is featured on their debut album Definitely Maybe,on the "Whatever" single, and on the "Champagne Supernova" US single. Also in the Stop the Clocks interview, Noel claimed that he was told to release it as a fifth single from Definitely Maybe, but Gallagher refused, arguing, "You can't have five [singles] off a debut album." Furthermore it is claimed to be Paul McCartney's favorite song by Oasis in the same interview.

Damn, I was really pulling for Bonehead's Bank Holiday to be number 1.

MarkoP, Monday, 29 August 2016 00:57 (seven years ago) link

'Live Forever' would have made my ballot, admittedly. I'm more surprised about 'Some Might Say' being in the Top 3, if only because there's been about 20 songs that have placed below it that are superior to it.

So, unless I'm mistaken, the first song on the list not from Definitely Maybe or Morning Glory era is at 23. That's pretty remarkable, though perhaps not surprising. And it's a song from Dig Out Your Soul, which might be a bit more surprising.

But that Spotify playlist has made my evening

i was more upset that you didn't submit a ballot over Turrican not submitting one. you are the one who volunteered to run this, but that might have been my fault as well. i know you said in the poll thread that you wanted to sign up but i think it was a running joke as well. this is why i took over because i didn't confirm that you would actually run it.

so were good.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 30 August 2016 00:39 (seven years ago) link

Sorry to have missed the climax of the rollout, but a fun poll all the way - got me listening to these guys and having their songs stuck in my head again in a way I really would not have seen myself ever doing again. I had "Supersonic" #1 but can't complain at the results at all - - - though a bit sad "All Around the World" couldn't crack the top 50. "Some Might Say" making it to #3 is maybe the biggest surprise to me, not that I dislike it (had it at #8) but would not have figured it for a consensus pick over such celebrated cuts as "Acquiesce" (one that I never have gone for, really).

there's an interview of NG where he says that McGee went crazy when he first heard the "sunsheeeine" part and thought it was absolutely brilliant. then he says, after that, LG started to pronounce every daily word that way.

I tried to listen to BHN yesterday. oh what a mistake...
I was depressed, bored and exhausted after a few tracks and couldn't even finish it (but I made sure to check at least a part of all the songs).
it sounds terrible, the songs are terrible... awful.
I saw an interview of NG saying when they were signed, he had already written all the songs for the first 3 albums : all the best ones were put on DM, those that couldn't fit in on the first album were on What's the Story and... the remaining trash was on BHN... and you can tell !
It may have been reduced to an average single : "d'ya know what I mean" / "all around the world" (interlude) / "stand by me"...
