Doers anybody else hear Headlights on the Parade off Hats as a very close take off on a Kraftwerk track. I think it's something from Man machine. Not listened to either in a while but did so in the late 80s quite a bit and thought it was possibly an intentional rewrite or something that had come from thaem jamming on it or something.

What is most interesting about this thread is that there are answers. For 15 years, any thread soliciting your favorite [anything] would be greeted with maybe one or two sincere replies, then a smattering of snark, then a slide down the sna.

I think Headlights on the Parade Ground always reminded me of Kraftwerk's Neon Lights and always wondered if it was conscious on their part. Definitely a Kraftwerk track from around that era anyway. TGHough the instrumentation is pretty differenmt. I think it was melody and structure and the central riff.

Much earlier than that - early-mid 90s. I can't think of any lyrics save for something like 'I am not a boy I'm a man' sung as an interjection in a lower tone than the rest of the vocal. It's a fairly famous AOR pop hit. Driving me nuts.

"It really is a nice album! Just reissued too."
"Did not know this, thanks for the tipoff! Just ordered the vinyl."

would be curious to hear the new vinyl just to see if they made any improvements or if they just made it louder or whatever. my original pressing is not that loud. and if i crank it up it doesn't sound the best. i've never actually heard the CD. i should find an old CD. or a new one.

i got an old CD copy of their last album recently and it sounded good. totally forgot about that album. glad there are new reissues of How It Feels...though! now new sad sacks can revel in it.

3 of the 5 albums i posted would be in my top 5 at any time in the past 15-20 years.

Pavement - Wowee Zowee
The Clash - Sandinista!
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out

R.E.M. - Dead Letter Office

This thread is great but this exercise is hard af. Kills me I can't fit any Al Green/Fugazi/Unwound on there, or much rap or newer stuff. But I tend to love long, messy albums that you can explore forever, and each of these LPs introduced me to huge worlds of music so they'll always hold a special place

Evan R, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:06 (seven years ago) link

I like RYM, I like reading some users reviews and I find out about records by looking through others users whose taste I know. I also make list on the site.

JacobSanders, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:08 (seven years ago) link

Two albums I'd consider if bonus editions count: VU's Loaded (Fully Loaded Edition) and that 50-track version of Elvis Costello's Get Happy!!. Those are such insanely generous collections of music, and good examples of albums that are somehow even better when they're longer and messier

Evan R, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:08 (seven years ago) link

Oh yeah.

Mark G, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:11 (seven years ago) link

RYM consensus is often fairly dull, much like ILM consensus, but the trick is learning how to apply your own filters

imago, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:12 (seven years ago) link

heavy users of rym are mostly prog metal junkies ime

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:14 (seven years ago) link

brimstead, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:15 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, the best way to get the most out of RYM is to make use of the filters. I've made some surprising discoveries that way. Otherwise, the charts just look like this thread.

pen pineapple apple pen (Turrican), Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:16 (seven years ago) link

Prog metal fans are very easily categorisable as stupid, and I say that as a fan of prog and metal

imago, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:17 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, there's a lot of prog/metal/prog metal "genre experts" on RYM, it's true... but they're not the only genres that RYM is useful for getting deep into.

pen pineapple apple pen (Turrican), Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:19 (seven years ago) link

my latest thing with rym has been the lists. the thing tim f said about knowing four of the selections? there are so, so many user-generated lists like that. find a reasonably obscure record you like and see what lists it's on, instant discovery engine.

a confederacy of lampreys (rushomancy), Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:24 (seven years ago) link

I like RYM's genre charts a lot, I've found them very useful. And there's a lot of reviews for stuff you probably won't find elsewhere.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:25 (seven years ago) link

Basically, what I'm saying is that if flappy bird really was serious about discovering new music, that he'd really benefit from making full use of the data available on RYM or perusing many of the sites out there which feature hundreds of lists of albums. I would have also recommended the "recommendations" feature on last.fm before the site got redesigned and completely wrecked the feature, which is a bit of a shame.

I mean, it's cool that people like Hounds of Love and everything, but surely at this stage anyone who's ever found ILM or is posting here knows it's generally considered to be classic. Hats also, as much as I don't rate it, is hardly an obscure release - as far as I'm aware it's always been a critically acclaimed, well known release.

scott seward, Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:36 (seven years ago) link

RYM is great. Pretty much like Amazon reviews minus corrupt "featured" reviews. Lists, avg rating and genre-sorting are super informative and often helpful. The writing itself runs gamut from unreadable, to often better than you'll find at most professional music publications, esp for stuff that as mentioned, usually doesn't get written about. Music obsessives who know a ton about only one kind of music will write super-detailed reviews of super obscure records. Same with record collectors who go out of there way to hear everything -- does that mean I always agree w/their review? No, but who doesn't want an informed opinion?

And yeah, if you hang around long enough, you will notice people saying things like "RYM likes this a lot". Because the site emphasizes metrics and categorization, genres and "tastes" seem to evolve out of it. No, the site is not a monolithic music AI -- but it affects opinions and perspectives about music that wouldn't happen otherwise.

shit, two paragraphs means I actively tried to derail a thread

my latest thing with rym has been the lists. the thing tim f said about knowing four of the selections? there are so, so many user-generated lists like that. find a reasonably obscure record you like and see what lists it's on, instant discovery engine.

^^^ this is definitely the key

lots of top 20/weird genre-specific lists out there that randomly list albums I love, discovered so much weird and cool stuff that way

ILM is invaluable. Probably at least a dozen users here whose opinions and recommendations carry real weight. Weird to think about how many great albums I'd have missed out on without it.

What is RYM? Is it just amateur reviewers writing reviews? Because that doesn't seem very useful.

That'd be the "deluxe edition" hi-res download currently up on hdtracks.com. It's free of later vocal overdubs (Entwistle in '94, Daltrey in '01), restores many of the edits, and has the best mastering.

That said, the bootleg Live at Leeds Complete is a close second, being completely unedited ("Magic Bus" is almost two minutes longer). But the drums are a tad too low in the mix on the boot for my taste.

a thing abt listmaking for me is that I can never really visualize or remember all my favorite albums at once, but I want to, since they make up a big part of who I understand myself to be, so making lists is kind of an attempt to grasp my own musical taste, and watching other peoples improvised lists in this thread reminds me of a lot of those non-cannon gems that are also in my top tier and that I really want to remember

Renaissance's first line up are also pretty decent.
They were initially a Yardbirds spin off but I don't think any of that line up lasted into the better known one from the 70s.
Keith Relf and his sister started looking into blending stuff together with classical and folk influences alongside Jim Mcarty the Yardbirds drummer.

I have a Sanctuary compilation 2cd that has some nice stuff on it.
