Really digging the Old Gray album that came out last month. Maybe too screamy for this thread?

xp

That's lovely! Very full-sounding with the strings. Look forward to the full release.

Not wanting to delve into the past too much here, but I missed this TBS-styled EP of cute, energetic anthems last year and really think it's worth many listens:

sorority noise remain as ever kinda eh whatever diet emo to me but there's more animation in the new single than i've heard from them before

new menzingers!

Mordy, Saturday, 4 February 2017 16:19 (seven years ago) link

my first listen was...not very promising for the most part, esp distressing as I thought Rented World was a significant step up

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 4 February 2017 16:42 (seven years ago) link

oh - i like it so far! i mean it's not super innovative but that was never really their strength. it's just v listenable crunchy power pop punk (some songs remind me of infinity on high fall out boy and 21st century breakdown green day)

Mordy, Saturday, 4 February 2017 16:52 (seven years ago) link

I'm seeing Priests + Snail Mail tonight and listening to Snail Mail's Habit EP for the first time. It's much more emo than I was expecting, in the best way possible.

love it. i'm so easily manipulatable by emo songs. that moment at 2:00 (and in almost every emo song ever) when the instrumental cuts out and then comes roaring back in is super effective for me no matter how many times i hear it. thursday obv the master of this particular trick. when i saw them w/ my brother at starland he was so impressed at how rickley goes from 0 to 10 in 0 seconds. now they're doing a full tour and i'm thinking about seeing them AGAIN and fillmore philly...

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 15:33 (seven years ago) link

i still really want to do that emo/pop-punk poll i signed up for years ago on the poll thread. i was also thinking a POX FOB thread would be fun. i've been listening to so much /classic/ emo recently - FOB when i drive, Brand New all the time, Dashboard at work. still loving that new dashboard covers EP.

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 15:35 (seven years ago) link

I would be so down for that even though I seem to only be able to get into maybe 50% of the "classic" emo bands for one reason (musical or extramusical) or another

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 16:43 (seven years ago) link

in a way it feels like cheating cause it's so acclaimed and no one (that I can recall) called it emo at the time? but also it feels like it set the course for how emo bands tend to evolve as they stick around and grow up so idk

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 16:45 (seven years ago) link

i plan to have a v expansive definition

Was taken aback by how emo Meadowlands is when i finally heard it a few years ago, for some reason always assumed they sounded like The National. Was p4k particularly averse to stuff calling itself emo in 2003?

the wrens have a little bit of emo in them anyway imo (the most obvious thing being the emphasis on dual vocals), see this og version of "boys you won't" from an old drive-thru records comp

Pretty sure it's the NME's fault I didn't listen to any emo records between 'From Under the Cork Tree' and the first Joyce Manor.

devvvine, Friday, 10 February 2017 17:07 (seven years ago) link

all these bad p4k reviews of classic emo albums just screams of anxiety - the knock consistently appears to be that the albums aren't /serious/ enough compared to the EXTREMELY DIFFERENT and NOT THE SAME THING AT ALL college rock indie albums they're touting one review over. hard to imagine someone listening to deja entendu and not finding at least some of the lyrics clever, or listening to all of bleed american and not enjoying any of it. all these reviews sound like the reviewer yelling at their own youth.

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 17:08 (seven years ago) link

at the v least i'll do albums and depending how that goes i'll do tracks too maybe following? it feels like too much to run both simultaneously?

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 17:08 (seven years ago) link

hard to imagine someone listening to deja entendu and not finding at least some of the lyrics clever

to that reviewer's credit i believe he acknowledges that some of the lyrics are great

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 February 2017 17:09 (seven years ago) link

give spin + andy greenwald credit for treating thursday and brand new and dashboard all seriously - i loved greenwald's nothing feels good and i remember at least a few really excellent profiles of chris carrabba at the time. probably lucky i was reading spin (and RS who iirc didn't weigh in much either way) and not p4k.

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 17:10 (seven years ago) link

conversely i haaaaate the greenwald book but i hate dude's writing generally

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 February 2017 17:12 (seven years ago) link

i haven't read it since it came out so for all i know it would annoy me now but back then it felt good (lol) to see bands i loved getting a somewhat serious treatment on their level. iirc i particularly liked the conversations he had w/ the fans about why they loved this music.

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 17:13 (seven years ago) link

I suffered p much exactly the same musical respectability politics issue that Brad did which is why the closest I got to emo at the time was The Wrens and the Desoto records stuff which tbh I really think should also be considered emo. Some of it (eg Shiner's The Egg) even got the dreaded emo pan

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 18:09 (seven years ago) link

I guess we can save the debate for the poll but imo to qualify, bands should have *some* kind of over-earnest or, well, emotional quality, which is why I'd be comfortable nominating Juno but not, say, Black Eyes or Q and not U.

tbh I thought Jimmy Eat World, Jets to Brazil, etc were terrible at the time. Was much more into stuff like Small Brown Bike, Hot Water, Frodus, Shiner, PMFS... which I guess means just post-hardcore, though emo-core was what we thought of it.

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 February 2017 18:51 (seven years ago) link

See I dunno if it's just the influence of the college radio circles I ran with at the time or what, and honestly no offense intended, but My Chemical Romance was widely regarded as garbage by the emo "cognoscenti" I associated with when they came out. Everyone was way more into the stuff coming out on DeSoto, Deep Elm, No Idea, etc.

Or maybe I just hung out with more punk rockers than it seemed like at the time. The joys of dissecting what "emo" is at 38 years old, 17 years after the fact!

This was v much the perception in my friend circle at the time, I only learned to love them and FOB thru ILX evangelism (esp brad's) over the least few years

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 19:07 (seven years ago) link

i didn't like FOB until infinity on high and continue to find those earlier albums pretty boring + derivative - i think they really came into their sound around then and it has only been excellent stuff since then. MCR otoh was great from the get-go and if anything i think they kinda lost the plot the more proggy-emo they got. speaking of proggy-emo i'm unapologetically a coheed & cambria fan in particularly second stage turbine and in keeping secrets

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 19:11 (seven years ago) link

particular*

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 19:11 (seven years ago) link

second stage was a huge record for me bc it was kind of a "eureka" moment with regard to the continuity of emo bc parts of it sound like sunny day real estate

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 February 2017 19:13 (seven years ago) link

besides ILX I think Thursday's A City by the Light Divided was what clued me in to the fact that there was a whole world of stuff I'd previously dismissed, and tbh I don't think I'd have noticed it except for the fact that it crossed over to the indie press due to (I guess) Fridmann's involvement

Those Ugly Organ B-sides and those EPs they recorded while Greta was in the band are all essential, too. Every thing Kasher did got wildly uneven after that, but Mama, I'm Swollen is wayyyyy underrated. Some of his best songs are on that one.

devvvine, Friday, 10 February 2017 21:16 (seven years ago) link

at the time of lifted i for sure thought of bright eyes as emo but in hindsight for some reason it feels more indie singer-songwriter'y? obv this has something to do w/ the trajectory his career took since then but lifted seems of a piece w/ the rest of his catalog - like maybe he was never emo it was like one of those things where something presents as X but it turns out it was coincidental and actually it turned out to be Y all along.

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 21:18 (seven years ago) link

yeah agree. interested to see how you end up framing this whole thing with which inclusions/exclusions. good luck

two weeks pass...

Juggling the needs and schedules of three bands sounds daunting, but to hear Chris Carrabba tell it, it's a necessary part of his creativity, with each band benefiting the others. After reaching success with Dashboard Confessional in the early 2000s, he rejoined the reactivated band Further Seems Forever in 2010, and debuted the Americana and folk-influenced Twin Forks in 2013. All three bands have new albums in various stages of completion -- new Dashboard and Twin Forks albums are "pretty close to done," while a new Further Seems Forever EP is "in gestation" -- and Carrabba has been performing live with multiple bands, sometimes within days of each other.

!!!

Mordy, Friday, 12 May 2017 13:34 (six years ago) link

Hey guys. I generally stay away in fear from ILM, but I was looking for some recommendations. Not much of a deep punk taste, liked it in the '90s, didn't branch out much from NOFX/Green Day/Operation Ivy/Bad Religion. 2000s pop-punk came and I was generally turned off by a lot of the bands coming out. Like some were OK, but.. in any case I'm a dilettante on this genre, mostly... bear in mind.

Was listening to an album in my iTunes library that still kills for me some reason. I haven't really heard much that hit me in just the right way called Fifth Hour Hero. (I also don't know how well known this band is, only that I discovered them right before they broke up. Some cartoonist recommended them, I think.) In particular their last EP (You Have Hurt My Business and My Reputation Too) and last album (Not Revenge... Just a Vicious Crush) are just fantastic. something about them reaches into my heart, like they jumped from a decade earlier sidestepping a lot of the style from the mid-'00s. Some shades of Japanese rock/pop from that era too, though I'm not gonna try to explain why I'm feeling it. The lead vocalist has a good style, and even the guy who sings the odd track here and there isn't bad. Crisp production, drums, angsty emotionally lyrics totally sold by by a great voice. Yet, admittedly, not super original? But there's something there, I don't know. Anyway, if anyone knows this band and/or could point me in the direction of music like it, I'd really appreciate it.

If you're curious, look up "Everything I Won't Miss" and "My Sympathies".

(I did a little research and found that they had some connection to Against Me!, appearing as background vocalists on one album and being on the same label at some point, but... that band didn't really do it for me at all, like most pop-punk bands to be honest.)

I'm not sure where to put this song--I get a Weakerthans vibe from the lyrics (emo?), and they're on SideOne Dummy (pop/punk?)--so I'm putting it here. Point is, I'm loving it.

emo/pop-punk/dogs on skateboards/etc albums I have been enjoying this year to varying degrees, using a loose genre definition as always:

Sorority noise
Mystery Weekend
Hater
Creeper
Katie Ellen
Ratboys
Smidley
Charly Bliss
Rozwell Kid
Cayetana
Turtlenecked
Single Mothers

Misery is like the most emo song ever"

Pretty, but he don't tell you about it
Winter scarves and skirts of velvet
Still drink just like we did in school
I passed your old house down by the cemetery
Club nights and university
When your friends sing 'Born to Run', baby, resist
Cause we were 'Born to Drift'

If you could see the wreck I am these days
You'd have new reasons to stay away
Just hold my hand for a little while
Misery never goes out of style

This seems a key read

https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/unraveling-the-sexism-of-emos-third-wave/

Ned Raggett, Friday, 17 November 2017 20:06 (six years ago) link

there's probably an instance in the brand new thread of me... not exactly defending "me vs. maradona" but thinking it was more self-aware and self-loathing than, say, any song from your favorite weapon, and ofc that makes me feel sick now

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 17 November 2017 20:43 (six years ago) link

Where did we lose the plot? When I think about the decades that immediately preceded third-wave emo—about D.C. punk, riot grrrl, Kurt Cobain proclaiming women the future of rock—I’m astonished that it happened at all.

what jenn gets at here is something i've thought about a lot. i mean, nothing moves in a straight line; things fluctuate and loop around themselves. but still, as a genre emo started out as a somewhat gendered response to hardcore (i mean it was still a boy's club but it was a boy's club that seemed to long to subvert or reject masculinity) that over the course of 15 years rerouted itself into outright misogyny. (of course this description kinda flattens how many different things emo became just within the '90s)

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 17 November 2017 20:50 (six years ago) link

I think it came from how early emo was about really laying your insides bare, putting your emotional baggage right out there. This idea gave gross dudes what they saw as license to just spit out all their misogynistic baggage out there because that's what they were feeling without the smallish scene politics to keep their shit in check. (I mean early emo wasn't all wine and roses either but there's definitely a change when mainstream emo hit larger audiences.)

tbh I don't really think there's anything wrong with that "Sugar We're Going Down" line (though there's plenty of other ugly or gross Wentz lyrics esp from that era)

Simon H., Saturday, 18 November 2017 03:04 (six years ago) link

flopson, Monday, 20 November 2017 23:32 (six years ago) link

That Pinegrove statement is insanely vague but still troubling.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 16:13 (six years ago) link

I might be erring on the side of optimism here but it reads like a cautious reaction/reflection as opposed to damage control (this is of course subject to change as facts emerge)

Simon H., Tuesday, 21 November 2017 16:27 (six years ago) link

I suspect it's quite bad. The statement twists itself into knots trying to avoid saying what he did, which completely negates the apology and makes me suspect the worst.

Evan R, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 16:32 (six years ago) link

It's so easy to nitpick these apologies, because they're inherently self-serving, but this one particularly left a foul taste in my mouth. He avoids saying "I did it," or even mentioning what "it" is. And he plays the "I'm trying to respect the privacy of the victim" card, which would be thoughtful if not for the two long paragraphs of superfluous identifying details about her, which do nothing except to justify how he might have "monumentally misread" the situation. Gross.

Evan R, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 16:36 (six years ago) link

it's an extremely confusing statement

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 16:42 (six years ago) link

It's confusing by design, I think. I've seen quite a few people on Twitter who think he's apologizing for sleeping with consenting fans on the road and don't understand what the big deal is. That part of the apology is conversational catnip, but it's also beyond the scope of what he's been accused of and is apologizing for. It just blurs things and changes the conversation.

Evan R, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 16:46 (six years ago) link

I'm inclined to agree with you Evan. It's either one of two things, what simon said, that it's just an overly cautious attempt to get ahead of the game of something possibly small, or it's intentionally obfuscating something much bigger. I feel like the latter comes across as more likely given how vague the apology is.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 17:07 (six years ago) link

unfortunately from what i've heard (which is... just whispers at the moment, so i'm not in a position to clarify beyond this extremely vague post, but hopefully it can kinda... prepare people for what's going to happen next) this isn't good

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 21:08 (six years ago) link

fucking hell

Simon H., Tuesday, 21 November 2017 21:12 (six years ago) link

Nobody's perfect and most publications are trying to cover this stuff sensitively, but I suspect music media is going to have to have a conversation with itself about how it's covered this story. Letting an abuser define the narrative is bad precedent—it makes the story not about the abuse, but about the abuser's soul-searching journey— and I suspect the widespread adoption of his "sexual coercion" terminology is going to look very embarrassing soon.

It's a tricky story to report, especially with what's on the record right now, but it's not the press's job to do P.R. for an abuser.

Evan R, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 21:54 (six years ago) link

eh in this case i don’t think the press had much choice

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 22:22 (six years ago) link

I mean, this headline has been chilling on the front page of Pitchfork all afternoon: Pinegrove Cancel Tour After Accusation of Sexual Coercion Against Frontman Evan Stephens Hall

doesn't look great for him either way

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 22:30 (six years ago) link

if i said "i just hope this doesn't bury the next Pinegrove album forever" is that "haha funny/true" or HEY MAN NOT FUNNY! in this delicate time on the internet

alpine static, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 22:32 (six years ago) link

imo you should keep that shit to yourself

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 22:36 (six years ago) link

xxp Lots of headlines frame the story around his apology, letting him get ahead of the narrative. EW's, for instance: "Pinegrove cancels tour after 'sexual coercion' accusation: 'I am so sorry,' singer says"

And this A.V. Club report is... just about as bad as it could be. This lead gushes with appreciation about him coming clean "as soon as they were brought to his attention," and frames the narrative around him coming to terms with what he did:

As more and more people get called out for inappropriate abusive behavior in their past, Pinegrove frontman Evan Stephens Hall has decided to issue a response to allegations of misconduct against him as soon as they were brought to his attention rather than wait until the backlash had begun to swell. In a post on the band’s Facebook page, Hall said that he has been accused of sexual coercion, saying that he now realizes he abused his power as a member of the band by partaking in “flirtatious” and “intimate” encounters with fans. “I’ve reached the conclusion now that that’s not ever appropriate,” Hall writes, “even if they initiate it. There will always be an unfair power dynamic at play in these situations and it’s not ok for me to ignore that.”

I get that these are weird circumstances, but we gotta do better than that.

Evan R, Tuesday, 21 November 2017 22:38 (six years ago) link

evan literally the only information available is the apology

It's more post-hardcore than emo but man this Flagland record is the craziest rock record I've heard in a long time, a big freewheeling shoestring opus. it seems beamed in from 2002 in the best way possible

ok so i've heard the glassjaw (it's really weird) and now i can do this:

top emo/pop-punk albums 2017:

jeremy enigk: ghosts
manchester orchestra: a black mile to the surface
circa survive: the amulet
rainer maria: s/t
paramore: after laughter
glassjaw: material control
caracara: summer megalith
creeper: eternity, in your arms
racquet club: racquet club
front bottoms: going grey
oliver houston: whatever works
smidley: smidley
smith street band: more scared of you than you are of me
iron chic: you can't stay here
worriers: survival pop
sorority noise: you're not as ____ as you think

i've def felt a little weird relistening to certain songs from deja entendu but the new one is still great imo but i know i'm unusual in my tolerance for consuming ethically questionable media. i don't judge anyone who has come to a different perspective for sure. i'm a little annoyed bc i feel like i'm going to end up censoring myself when balloting comes around but idk there are much worse problems in the world i can live w/ this one.

Some days that Caracara LP is my favorite rock album of the year.

That Sorority Noise album is absolutely mammoth. And Rainer Maria... holy shit; the wow factor never went away with that one. Side A is flawless.

Would also add the Sinai Vessel album and Tall Friend and Club Night EPs to the pile. It's been a pretty sensational year, I think.

Feeling this post. I'm annoyed too, not even with self-censorship, but with the fact that I got cheated. The new Brand New album was actually my first Brand New album: the emo-poll on here renewed my interest in the genre, and this came along, and I loved it to bits. Yada yada couple of months later and it's in tatters, because this fuckhead couldn't control himself.

Still think it's a great album, but no love lost in leaving it off the ballot. Not listened to it since I heard the news, but I'll be honest: it did feel like a rough and sudden break-up with something I held dear for a while. But as you say: there are bigger problems.

The new one is definitely the crowd-pleaser. Joy, Departed was a very sour record, and the It Kindly Stopped for Me EP is such a rough listen it almost feels like grief rendered into a snuff film. The tougher, alt-rock thing of the new one is a great look for them though.
