I had Joe autograph my JBLP gold top last year. When Joe hefted it up by the neck he quipped "That's about the weight of a nice sized walleye". (It weighs in at 9 lbs, 3 oz.) I guess you need to be a sport fisherman to appreciate that!

A true story from Joes` recent Bridlington gig.
My mates wife had an empty seat to her right. A dapper little gent in his sixties sat down next to her and was talking on his mobile(cell-phone to our friends across the pond).
"Yes I`m at Brid Spa, some guy called Joe Bonamassa, don`t know anything about him."
We thought he won`t be here for long. After the second song he was jumping about shouting "Joe, Joe, Joe."
To cut a long story short this old chap was now hooked and said," This guy`s better than Clapton and Well

I talked to Joe after a show here in Atlanta several years ago and asked if he would like to spend the following day riding motorcycles with me and some buddy’s here in the Georgia country side. I am a dealer and could have hooked him up for a nice afternoon of riding. His response to me was “No Way” I am not coordinated at all and can hardly drive a car.
I find that pretty funny considering he sounds like 2 guys playing guitar and singing all at the same time.

"Solos are basically 16-to-24-bar marathons. If you run a marathon, you can’t start sprinting, but at the start people need a little fireworks to grab their attention. Then you have to back off and say something with a melody before you start barnstorming." — Joe Bonamassa

This wiki bit is comedy gold:

Bonamassa went to Nashville and collaborated with three songwriters there: Jonathan Cain, who has written for Journey; James House, known for his work with Diamond Rio...; and Jerry Flowers, who has written for Keith Urban. Bonamassa explained to the writers that he wasn't interested in creating three-minute radio hits, but just wanted to write some serious blues rock.

Oh, and as far as mainstream music magazines go, well, they've pretty much ignored Bonamassa. In a 2011 American Blues Scene interview, when asked why he wasn’t featured on the Rolling Stone Top 100 Guitar Players of All-Time list, Joe replied, "Have you seen who’s on the cover this week? (It was Snooki.) Rolling Stone has about as much credibility as The National Enquirer."

At this point, it surprises almost nobody that when Joe plays guitar, it’s a “masterclass from a force of nature” as the Lancashire Telegraph said.

Bonamassa was performing at the Brady Theater in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on December 9, when he saw a bouncer harassing an audience member. The blues guitarist took his rare 1951 Fender No-caster in hand and gave the guard a whack.

Afterward, he shared a photo of the incident on his Instagram, along with the following note:

“And to the bouncer who harassed one of our fans up front... That is why you can now tell your family and friends what a 51 Fender No-caster to the head feels like. Don’t ever put hands on my fans again. Consider that a love tap reminder.”

Before he reached 18 years old, Bonamassa was playing in a band called Bloodline with the sons of Miles Davis, Robby Krieger, and Berry Oakley.

one month passes...

Joe Bonamassa is known for his collection of incredibly rare sunburst Gibson Les Paul Standards. But his own signature Gibson Les Paul is a goldtop, created for him by the company in 2008.

Bonamassa recently traded in the prototype of the model at Norman’s Rare Guitars. In the video below, he talks about the guitar and how he felt when the prototype was delivered to him.

“When you’re a kid and you see a Gibson Les Paul, and then something that you’ve idolized over the years shows up at your door and it says [your name] on the truss-rod cover—it was a very special day,” he recalls.

Bonamassa immediately put the guitar to work on the recording of his 2009 album, The Ballad of John Henry, which hit Number One on the Billboard Top Blues chart.

The guitar features Gibson Burstbucker pickups and a black back. “I was trying to make like an early ’57,” he explains. It also has mismatched volume and tone knobs. Bonamassa explains that the different feel of the knobs allows him to know which one he’s grabbing without having to look, which is vital when he’s performing and singing.

Bonamassa explains that Gibson was nervous about the guitar, not knowing if his name had enough clout to carry a signature guitar. “This represented a risk on their part, and it represented a journey for me,” he says.

His favorite guitar is a ’59 Les Paul Sunburst, a “Holy Grail” that he actually takes on the road with him.

“I tour nine months a year,” Bonamassa told Gibson.com, in a 2011 interview. “What am I going to do, come home and noodle with it on the couch? Go, ‘Wow look at this, I’ve got a ’59 Les Paul that never gets used, maybe on a recording here and there.’ I’d rather get a nice case for it--which I did--hire an ex-secret service agent as my security guard--which I did (laughs)--and take it on the road.” In an interview with AmericanBluesScene.com, Bonamassa praised the ‘59’ Les Paul’s extraordinary tone. “I have over 300 guitars, but out of all of them, that one is definitely my favorite.”

Those trademark shades he wears vary with the seasons.

“I have four sets of them,” Bonamassa once told GuitarMessenger.com. “I have the 'hot summer show' ones–called Silhouettes, because they wrap around your ears. That prevents them from sliding off. Then, when you get into the wintertime and the theater’s not that hot, I wear a set of Pradas. I also have a set of Ray Bans and a set of Revos. I’m sure I’ve bought enough sunglasses to put somebody’s kid through college.”

The place you’re most likely to find him, when he’s not on tour, is The Home Depot.

“I’m deep into home improvements,” Bonamassa told a fan forum, in 2006. “I love The Home Depot. I'm good at walking in and picking things out, buying the supplies for the deck or whatever other project is on the list. But I leave the work to the pros. I’m just good at the buying part.”

James Kamaunu I love Joe, but the cellists be best served playing with a more Jazz musician to implement her skill with a sound like no other cellists would explore doing.. This is more rudiments, speed but I'd rather hear her playing " her " and with a style of music she can eccentuate her style within it... Aloha.. just say and no disrespect Joe - he's awesome...

“I’ve really gotten over pedals. I can’t keep up with this craze of boutique pedals that make you sound like everything but your guitar. I can’t get my head around it. So you don’t want to play a guitar [properly] so you buy a box that makes it sound like an algorithm, like you just fired up your computer and you can spend the night staring at your fuckin’ shoes? C’mon man…

“I know I’ll get shit for saying this, but it’s fucking lazy. It’s insulting to people who spent 35 years playing and learning, like a lot of players. And we continue to work at it! These guys can barely play a chord but call themselves soundscapists. Get the fuck outta here! It’s bullshit. There’s so much masking and spin going on there. Can we get real for a minute? What do you actually play? Pick up an acoustic guitar… try that!”

Very skeptical of anyone who considers themselves a musician that doesn't —or, in this case, refuses— to see the potential in all types of music gear. Fine to say, "I don't really like to use effects pedals", but to just assume somebody who does is somehow lesser talented and/or knowledgeable just because of that is pretty flawed logic. I mean, I could say, "People who only rely on a guitar and an amp for their tone are destined to continue falling back on blues cliches to the point of becoming boring and predictable."

Also, the way he talks about pedals implies that he doesn't actually know much about what he's trying to talk down to. Referencing specifically, "pedals that make you sound like everything but your guitar. . . a box that makes it sound like an algorithm." Does he not realize that a good 65%-75% of new pedals that are coming out these days are drive pedals? Sure, some of those will color your tone a bit, but overwhelmingly, they just take your guitar and make it louder. How could he not already know this?

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Saturday, 4 November 2017 03:21 (six years ago) link

I think it may have something to do with his profound lack of imagination.

But those guys were my guys – Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page. There's a certain sophistication to their approach to the blues that I really like, more so than the American blues that I was listening to. B.B. King's a big influence – he's probably my biggest traditional influence. I love Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and T-Bone Walker and stuff like that, but I couldn't sit down. I was always forcing myself to listen to whole records by them, where I'd rather listen to Humble Pie do "I'm Ready" than Muddy Waters, you know? I think, the English interpretation of the blues just hit me a lot better, you know?

I think Joe would be good at SHOCKING ILM confessions.

Joe Bonamassa feuding with the alt-weekly in his hometown about a negative review = one of the all-time classic facebook threads

You GET 'EM JOE!! Obviously (REDACTED) hasn't gotten laid in a VERY long time!! Okay...sorry...that wasn't very tasteful, but I am HIGHLY offended by her reviews. You are a prodigy and have been blessed by the music gods!! Just keep doing what you're doing, rack up those platinum records and sell out your concerts. Some of us will continue to travel across the country just to see and hear you perform!! Love ya Joe!!!

THEY obviously have never seen your work , your passion oozzes from the strings. And so , someone just wanted to read the words they wrote and see their name attached to it.... THE pen is no longer mightier then the sword.... when you have concerts and YOUtube to not back up their claim.... so naaNAAnaaBOOboo... yes they suck & JOE you are amazing !!!!

Bloodline's name was chosen based on the fact that four of the group's founding members were the sons of famous musicians – Hagar of Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar, Krieger of former The Doors guitarist Robby Krieger, Oakley Jr. of original Allman Brothers Band bassist Berry Oakley, and Davis of prolific jazz trumpeter Miles Davis.

Is there a job at the Fender factory distressing these guitars? I had a job at a mirror frame factory when I was 19, and one of the tasks was dinging up the gilt frames on certain orders with a little chisel.

My cats are good at distressing Fender amps, if that is also a desirable look.

pure rim rest (Spottie), Thursday, 24 June 2021 18:50 (two years ago) link

Maybe I could get a job doing continuity. Fifties styled guitars should be relicized to about 12-15 years of wear in order to recapture the period classic rock was recorded, not 70 years. Belt buckle wear should be minimal, because big buckles were a 70s thing, so it would just be starting.

But I do not really wish him (or anyone) harm, as a person. There are a lot of people making music that I don't need to hear, and they are not necessarily bad people. Mocking his hair, clothing, and/or guitar choices is (comparatively) innocent fun.

I interviewed Joe once ... right at the beginning of COVID. I remember because the show was canceled a week later.

He was pleasant enough to talk to ... a bona fide (guitar and otherwise) dork, in a good way, but a dork with pretty much exactly the amount of arrogance you would expect from someone in his position. Not *too* arrogant (which would not be surprising), but obviously not the ideal amount of aw-shucks humility, either. Fake-ish self-deprecating, but also unwilling to be made fun of anonymously on the internet.

I think he is a true believer in the blues and thinks he is out there keeping it alive ... not sure he grasps how silly he seems, even a little bit.

Mid-way down through that Reddit post (many, many xposts upthread) a shoegaze discussion breaks out and someone hears Slowdive for the first time and digs it. So thank you Joe Bonamassa for helping keep the scene keep on celebrating itself!

There's a new Bonamassa special on PBS, he's playing a song inspired by "Kashmir" (complete w/strings), and there's a theremin solo.

I've still never heard this guy, but I find him really inspiring.

What’s the best way to ask a particularly rowdy neighbor to keep the volume down on a Sunday night? Send a passive-aggressive text message to the neighborhood WhatsApp group? March over and bang on the door, demanding them to keep quiet? Classic solutions, but not always the most successful.

How about crank a Dumble Overdrive Special guitar amp and rip through a timeless Deep Purple hit to give them a taste of their own medicine? Yeah, that’s more like it.

That was precisely Joe Bonamassa’s method of choice last weekend, when an especially noisy private party emanating from the nearby Houdini Estate threatened to disrupt the peace that had been established at the Kingdom of Nerdville.

Indeed, as darkness engulfed the Hollywood Hills on Sunday night, Nerdville was invaded by an unwanted battery of far-too-loud-for-a-school-night R&B music, which had been launched by a group of over-zealous partygoers at the multi-million-dollar property.

Duty-bound to protect the sacred confines of the Nerdville museum as its Mayor, Bonamassa clearly wasn’t going to take the challenge lying down, and did what any discerning guitar aficionado would do: hastily throw together a makeshift rig and return the favor with some equally zealous riffage.

As far as last minute rigs go, Bonamassa’s wasn’t half bad: a Dumble Overdrive Special was paired with his prized “Principal Skinner” 1959 Gibson Les Paul, serial number 9-1951.
With the help of two of the most elusive and sought-after pieces of guitar gear on the planet, Bonamassa took the fight to those disturbing the peace, returning fire with a wailing, horizon-filling rendition of Smoke on the Water.

“Sunday night and the Houdini private party folks are rocking a bit too hard for Nerdville standards at this hour,” he wrote on Instagram. “So I came up with an extreme solution to a simple problem. With the help of Mr. Skinner and Mr. Dumble.”

Unsurprisingly, Bonamassa’s no-nonsense methods of protecting the peace were well-received among his peers. Joanne Shaw Taylor commented, “Hank approves,” while Gibson’s Mat Koehler simply wrote, “Epic!”

Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Samantha Fish and Glenn Hughes were also among those who supported JoBo’s high-octane methods.

"Wait a minute. Let's unpack this logic. First of all, the grandchildren contacted me [for] two reasons. One, they knew I collected guitars. And two, they knew I offered a good home and a fair price. End of story. This isn't guitar-collecting socialism. It's not one guitar for everybody."

Probably, but I'm guessing might also have something to do with him having released so many damn albums and people really seem to love that Black Country Communion band he's in and I'm sure that's rolled into padding those stats.

doleful lundgren (Matt #2), Thursday, 29 February 2024 20:58 (two months ago) link

I guess my argument is that he was still perceived largely as a blues artist, where Clapton had Cream, Layla, Hendrix is too broad and creative to be a strictly blues artist.

It's probably like "most Billboard Blues chart #1 albums" or something like that. No chance he's outsold SRV, probably hasn't even outsold Kenny Wayne Shepherd.
