sad new emo year!!

Pianos Become the Teeth and Tiny Moving Parts have new ones out soonish

Simon H., Tuesday, 2 January 2018 18:05 (six years ago) link

lmao at the ersatz Eno/SotL ending to the new Rosenstock record, bless his heart

Simon H., Tuesday, 2 January 2018 18:34 (six years ago) link

POST- is fine but not really close to being as great as WORRY., it doesn't have the same sheer density of hooks

ufo, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 07:42 (six years ago) link

yeah the only two songs that really grab me in the worry way are the two epics. i also love "yr throat"

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 January 2018 08:44 (six years ago) link

I really like the two quasi-ballads, "TV Stars" (despite its weirdly arbitrary chorus) and "9/10", which actually got me a little teary on first listen. Definitely a transitional record, which is easy to get away with when you release an album every 12-15 months.

Simon H., Wednesday, 3 January 2018 14:48 (six years ago) link

"it's not like any other job I know / if you're a piece of shit they don't let you go" is a good of-the-moment lyric

Simon H., Wednesday, 3 January 2018 14:52 (six years ago) link

Sounds great so far. It doesn't build and flow as seamlessly as WORRY, but I like all the songs individually.

jmm, Wednesday, 3 January 2018 15:50 (six years ago) link

OK, the Tiny Moving Parts song released today ("Warm Hand Splash") is *fantastic*

gman59, Thursday, 25 January 2018 01:38 (six years ago) link

I'm liking Closer too; can't escape the irony that the chorus of the track they've set to play first is "All I want is something familiar" bc yeah this sounds familiar! In a good way!

based on my many listens to "Charisma" I have decided that PBtT's David Haik is the most overperforming drummer in emo (in a good way)

Everything in this thread is absolutely beautiful. Have been loving the Tiny Moving Parts, Closer, Jeff Rosenstock, Runaway Brother (who I'd never heard of before, so thank you Evan R), Senses Fail...all of it!

This is a really richly produced sort of emogaze by 'Snape', who don't seem to have released much else before this. The whole thing sounds great, but try track 5 for something instantly loveable.

new Wonder Years is a disappointment; the attempts to broaden their sound with keys and post-punk drums just flattens everything and the specificity is almost completely gone

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 15:37 (six years ago) link

it's just over the course of their last... idk, 2-3 records they've just really proven themselves incapable of realizing any potential they might've had. i thought they were maybe going somewhere interesting on no closer to heaven but half of that record was just really poorly executed versions of their usual thing

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 3 April 2018 15:42 (six years ago) link

all of their attempts to expand their sound feel really empty bc there's nothing in the songwriting to back it up

New interview/feature in Stereogum makes it sound like quite something.

While the title track and “Bastardizer” are laser-lit, howl-and-point anthems that could conceivably elevate them to the status of alt-emo festival staples like Manchester Orchestra, Circa Survive, and pre-downfall Brand New — all of whom they’ve opened for — there’s not much contemporary comparison to the nine-minute ambient odyssey “Five Cups” or the IDM-goes-post-hardcore frenzy of “Gameshark” or “Heartbeats” merging swirling house rhythms with atmospheric post-rock guitars.

Simon H., Tuesday, 19 June 2018 18:04 (five years ago) link

pre-downfall Brand New

certainly a way to put this

psyched for the record though, it is getting majorly hyped

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 18:08 (five years ago) link

though usually the records that ian really enthusiastically hypes i end up being pretty cool on (ex. harmlessness, goodness, surprised the foxing record doesn't end in "ness")

The first John K Samson album has The Last And, a Virtute-level hearttugger, inspired by The Simpsons' Krabappel/Skinner romance. Stylus has an article about some of that album's song origins. A favorite lyricist, love his small details and viewpoints.

4. [dormouse sighs]
5. Winter Solstice

7. Tortoises All the Way Down

9. Wendy & Betsy
10. New Wine, New Skins
11. Michael, Row Your Boat Ashore
12. Break on Through (to the Other Side) [pt. Two]

Brad, et al: Last night I listened to an album, Communication Breaks by Track Star, which I adored back in the day but had forgotten about for over a decade, and it rocked me. But judging by its YT views, it's all but forgotten by everyone. Track Star was Wyatt from Aislers Set and a friend. It's punky emo-y stuff with embittered lyrics (that also manage to be witty and winsome) and an awesome warbly piano-y guitar tone (on the lead guitar) that i love. Overall reminds me of (unsurprisingly) Henry's Dress but less outright punk. I'd like to know what you guys think. From 1999 I think. (Sorry if this thread is just supposed to be new stuff. Is it??)

The album is on YT. I'll post the opener

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 26 September 2018 14:18 (five years ago) link

...and Skylight is apparently being quietly released this Friday

tbh that piece mostly just made me feel very sorry for the band. The response doesn't seem commensurate with the "offense" at all even though it was completely understandable that the other bands, etc. just wanted to do the right thing by their respective fanbases. Just a mess all around.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Wednesday, 26 September 2018 14:28 (five years ago) link

it's weird to me that they're finally putting out the album in two days but fine i guess

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 26 September 2018 15:53 (five years ago) link

Kind of a weird piece. I enjoyed it but the more I thought about it the more issues seemed to build. Like it really seems like she wants the band exonerated throughout a good chunk of the piece which is a weird way to approach this.

Also, say what you want about Sheridan Allen, but she got the dude some therapy and kickstarted a mediation process so it seems a little much to throw her under the bus entirely. (She definitely had some issues with how she approached this and ethics violations don't get me wrong)

if there's a better thread for this, someone point me to it, but: has anyone here been to The Fest in Gainesville? good experience or too-big shitshow (or somewhere in between)?

I've always wanted to go.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Monday, 1 October 2018 14:25 (five years ago) link

i’ve gone annually for the past few years! it’s totally worth it and awesome if you’re on its wavelength of drinking pbr nonstop for three days (it’s also p awesome if you’re sober i imagine i’ve just never tried it). there are a lot of ppl and it grows every year so it can be hard to get into certain shows (mostly by popular or hyped bands) if you don’t line up early bc of venue capacity. but also if you don’t get in there’s probably another awesome show a five minute walk away. it’s also a v welcoming and not v annoying crowd; i can barely deal with punks at new york punk shows but fest punks are v chill and cool for the most part in my experience, sorta like hanging out with friends you haven’t met yet

one of the things they dialed down last year were the secret midnight-4am shows at the holiday inn which was a bummer, those were one of the best parts of fest, but all of the other hotels also usually have something going on during those hours

if you go pls treat yourself to reggae shack and boca, my two favorite restaurants

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 1 October 2018 14:55 (five years ago) link

thanks Brad ... so are all the venues w/in walking distance of each other? or most, at least?

those are my favorite kind of festivals ... so much better than "let's all go stand in a field"

alpine static, Monday, 1 October 2018 17:15 (five years ago) link

yeah it's spread between 9-10 venues that are all in walking distance of each other (though they're a 10-20 minute walk from any nearby hotel) and agreed, it's a much better experience

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 1 October 2018 17:23 (five years ago) link

also gainesville kinda empties out that weekend so it is temporarily almost 100 percent populated by punks

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 1 October 2018 17:24 (five years ago) link

the only way in which fest feels like a "too-big shitshow" is the very very very long line for wristbands on the first day, but everyone kinda drinks their way through that line and the fest organizers always bring pizza by

princess of hell (BradNelson), Monday, 1 October 2018 17:26 (five years ago) link

thanks. sounds rad. xpost: that reminds me of going to Psycho Las Vegas 3 years ago at the Hard Rock Casino and the population inside the place for the wknd was literally like 94% black-and-leather-clad metalheads and 6% millennial bachelorette party-goers wandering the grounds in clubwear and/or pajamas. it was amazing.

I have to admit that despite (because of?) their intensely one-note grey po-faced approach I've probably listened to the Pianos Become the Teeth album the most of any emo-sector record this year. a lot of stuff didn't connect for one reason or another, I didn't even really get into the Vespucci after all, mainly because Farren bores me as a lyricist/frontperson too much of the time

It grew on me so much. Catch You is one of my most listened-to tracks this year.

I saw DC last night at the first London show in over ten years. I was freaking out for a week in advance and continue to freak out. I saw them once at Glastonbury in 2006 but that wasn't the same kind of experience at all...of all the emo sing-alongs, this was the most wildly exalting. He also played a new song he'd just written which sounded way more like old Dashboard and was pretty great.

it's so not hardcore/punk in the way the the drug church record is. The "hardcore dudes" I'm imagining is mostly just something about his demeanor/delivery, def not the music. Like there's just a vibe I get that reminds me of like H20's softer moments, or like Weston or something.
