Superorganism - Everybody wants to be famous

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 23:01 (six years ago) link

That's the only single that has been released around my radar in the past two days.

And yes! I've started a playlist this year too for you all to laugh about my taste: https://open.spotify.com/user/moteldemoka/playlist/4G8vQwgf0H6hDomIeFT3C4

New Tuneyards song “heartattack” is good. One of my favorite ones I’ve heard from them. Also Karen O and Michael Kiwanuka collab for Kenzo is good.

Also new US Girls single. And an Alan Vega cover by soft moon of juxebox babe, not as great as the original but still I have a soft spot for covers of songs I love.

Khruangbin - Friday Morning
Helena Deland - There Are a Thousand

Agreed. This thread has been perfectly fine for umpteen years.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 20 January 2018 15:39 (six years ago) link

Favourite thing so far is the Pantsula! comp of late 80s South African dance music. I'm far from an expert but I hear early house, Italo, Shangaan sounds. Cover is some notable album art too:

Getting really addicted to Mor Mor - Heaven’s Only Wishful
I have a soft spot for songs that are sung continously low key and monotonic until the end where the singer starts sing-shouts. Selena Gomez Bad Liar did this too.

The two Helena Deland singles and the two Amen Dunes singles released so far are great. I think those two + US Girls are pointing out to be my favorite albums in the first quarter of 2018.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 15 February 2018 19:28 (six years ago) link

"Dark Oscillations" by Loma is pretty trippy-- spacious production, choral effects, almost proggy feeling. I think younger Hunt3r would deem this cheesy, but not now. Entire album is beautifully assembled.

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 20 February 2018 17:08 (six years ago) link

That Loma album is great. Recommend you to listen the albums from the bands forming it: Cross Record and Shearwater. The former in particular (wabi sabi) is amazing.

I'm not sure how much anyone cares about French music around here but I really like the new album by this band called Feu! Chatterton. It's kind of hard to describe, it fits the nouvelle chanson française descriptor I guess, sounds a bit Gainsbourg-y in a few places, singer kinda overdoes the romantic/sad Parisian poet thing at times but I don't mind. Here's "Souvenir", give it a shot:

re: is there a way I can c/p the tracklist from spotify?

Niels, yes you can do this by following these instructions:

1. First, make your Playlist Public on Spotify.

2. Sign up for a free account on SpotOnTrack (this only takes 10 seconds) - create a new username / password. then verify account via email.
http://www.spotontrack.com
SpotOnTrack uses a Spotify API for Spotify Data.

This site is not affiliated with or part of Spotify.

3. Wait 24? to 48 Hours? for your playlist to be indexed on SpotOnTrack. maybe the API retrieves data sooner?

4. Find your playlist, either by playlist search (this can be very slow as there are currently 3,008,564 playlists, so give your playlist a unique name) or by search for an artist then track that is included on your playlist (pick an obscure artist / track so that you can find your playlist easily)

5. When your playlist has been displayed, highlight the text you need from the bottom upwards with your mouse, right click copy - then use a text editor like Notepad on Windows 10 to paste the text to.

e.g forksclovetofu's 2018 Keepers playlist on Spotify
https://open.spotify.com/user/forksclovetofu/playlist/5F4O9GGhAEY5zYDDakpCuB
has 280 tracks at the mo, 9 followers

on SpotOnTrack
http://www.spotontrack.com/playlists/2681487#tab-tracks
(you need to be logged in to see this)
data is grouped 100 entries / per page

and this is an example of the copy / paste to notepad (i have only included the first track)

data elements:
track title
artist
date added to playlist
BPM
Music Key

Added on
1 All The Stars (with SZA)
SZA, Kendrick Lamar 2018-01-05 BPM 97
Key G#

it's not perfect, so you may need to do some manually reformatting in your text editor / Word Processor e.g Artist - Track

djmartian, Sunday, 25 March 2018 18:13 (six years ago) link

alright, thanks for sharing - a bit more troublesome than I had hoped, but it's always cool to see people are using the API to do stuff like that (recently found another one that lets you automatically follow all artists in your library)

I don't know what the name of the non-indie-pop indie thread is, but it doesn't have "rolling + 2018" in its title so I can't find it.

Anyway, I heard a couple tracks from this Frigs album, Basic Behaviour, on the radio tonight and I'm all in.

Allow Me to Destroy You sounds like Ariel Pink, even the title.

Wait... so the vocals on Friend ARE Arthur Russell??

What's the story with strange comp? I feel like this is another moment where the whole decontextualised experience of Spotify fails me.

After making possibly the worst EP that I listened to last year, Laure Briard has bounced back with one of my top 3 EPs of 2018 so far. Recorded in Brazil, sung in Portuguese and steeped in Brazil's recent musical history, it gets the balance between her pop and experimental tendencies exactly right this time.

a couple of recent Erstwhile releases have sort of reinvigorated my interest in the label.. that, and there's a 20% discount on all titles until August 15 (on bandcamp)

https://erstwhilerecords.bandcamp.com/album/mosquitoes-and-crabs
https://erstwhilerecords.bandcamp.com/album/my-trust-in-you

each album is a duo recording, each sounds both improvised and assembled (as collage) -- the Will Guthrie / Hong Chulki is probably the livelier of the two--featuring (heavy) bits of turntable and guitar wreckage, fragmented pieces of percussion and instances of straightforward drumming, electronics (sharp radio static-like sounds, etc.), and field recordings. they're both very well recorded--Mosquitoes and Crabs has a great visceral punch and prickliness to it.

My Trust in You (Marc Baron and Lucio Capece) is more varied, with lots of tape recorder/recording -fuckery by Marc Baron (along with other "analog devices"), and some lovely / atmospheric clarinet work by Lucio Capece. Capece is also credited with "slide saxophone, analog synthesizer and filter, drum machines, double looper, equalizers in feedback, regular and telephone field recordings, mini speakers in movement"

these albums are sort of a breath of fresh air, re: Erstwhile releases, and it's a good time to take advantage of the 205 off sale.

Future Me Hates Me By The Beths (which has been mentioned on the Alvvays and New Zealand music threads) is fast becoming my album of the year. So many amazing hooks crammed into every song and the harmonies/backing vocals are unbelievable. Could be this year's Charly Bliss.

Little Death is a probably my current favourite, but that keeps changing whenever I listen to it.

josh az (2011nostalgia), Wednesday, 29 August 2018 05:34 (five years ago) link

Could be this year's Charly Bliss.

I was interested, but what I love about CB is that their very melodically strong crunchy guitar songs have a total pure joy x-factor. This Beths song doesn't. It's perfectly fine, but feels like it was written specifically to be just that.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 29 August 2018 12:15 (five years ago) link

They're more akin to the more upbeat side of the Go-Betweens than Charly Bliss, imo. (It's a great album.)

the beths album is great, i'm hit and miss about what hyped records i listen to but my favorite power pop band is the toms so i pretty much had to listen to it and i'm so glad i did even if it's for ultimately superficial reasons

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Wednesday, 29 August 2018 14:15 (five years ago) link

I hadn't made the Go-Betweens connection before, but I totally get it. That probably explains why I'm so obsessed with them right now as I've been on a big Go-Betweens kick recently. I guess they just remind me of Charly Bliss in the way it's brilliantly played indie pop with influences from the same era and tons of character. I'm getting that same rush that I got when Charly Bliss started clicking for me. She definitely doesn't have the same unique style that Eva does. Maybe this album has more in common with the Alex Lahey album?

Anyway, I'm hoping that The Beths take off on here and can make the end of year top five like Charly Bliss did. I think a lot of people will love this record.

Shout out to a September album release that I just caught up with but was an insta-buy: the latest Tokyo Elvis LP "Nice & Pleasant". As ever with him, the words are mostly sung by a vocaloid software voicebank persona that you'll either love or hate but there's unexpected depths in the writing. Possibly my favourite pure pop LP of the year. Listen here: http://tokyoelvis.bandcamp.com/album/nice-pleasant
