Just been thinking about these compilations my dad would always put on in the car in about 1989/1990. Seemed like a natural mix of music at the time but these "world hits" are mostly US / UK / Ireland folk or country music, at least until the second half of the second tape, and some of the choices seem nothing short of bizarre now. In my mind these are big, important compilations which introduced me to many new artists, in reality they are probably nothing more than a fairly odd snapshot of a world-music-ish radio playlist from the time. Anyway, what do you think? Are these awful middlebrow 80s soft-world tapes, or is there good stuff to be found here?

where e'er we go we celebrate
the land that makes us refugees
from fear of priests with empty plates
grom guilt and weeping effigies
and we dance . . .

Bjorn Again Polka - Mad Professor mix and Mixmaster Morris remix fail to prevent this being as rubbish and irritating as the premise makes it sound. Or assist it in being so, depending on your point of view ;-)

Then again if Penguin Cafe Orchestra meets On-U Sound at Womad sounds appealing it may be of interest.

I saw Edward II and the Red Hot Polkas at (I think) Bromyard Folk Festival in the very early 90s, and thought they were brilliant, however I was about 12 and any live show would have been amazing to me, especially a novelty polka band with a sampler and a tasteless name, so that probably doesn't count for much.
