New Fumiya Tanaka album is 💖💖💖 - His music was also too dry and severe for my tastes, but his newer, more "palatable" releases have really hit the spot.

Hey! I just want to recommend a live stream of a DJ set, and I hope this is the right place to do it (apologies in advance, in case there is a more appropriate place to post it). It's in support of the city's best venue for 'alternative music' (whatever that means, but I think you get the Idea!), which is of course hit hard by the Coronavirus, so it's also possible to donate!

The live stream is here: https://www.tapeaarhus.dk/festaften19.html?fbclid=IwAR3LUv0FRA5gRgHHdanKYpjU34oeKdQL4UG1FWKDNWToVx0v900L9EzlxtY

It's by a DJ from the second biggest city in Denmark, Aarhus, and he is a part of a great local label, Regelbau - you might know the name from p4k or residentadvisor:)))

Niels Lyhne, Saturday, 28 March 2020 19:26 (four years ago) link

I know Regelbau from owning two Regelbau records, but I'm already tuned into another live stream! Its the right place tho!

Vakula again

ok. some evening reflections >>>>>
sometimes i have comments about kindness and positive thoughts and it often happens that during the conversation i asking this person one question: what do you eat?
i am enraged by people who talking about kindness and morality while eating meat at the moment of reasoning about what is good and what is evil.
to kill animals is good or bad? to eat meat of another animals or human is good or bad? some of you condemned me in the past (and i still remember it) for some kind of feminism and sexism, sitting in front of a laptop or your iPhone eating at that moment a piece of meat with a glass of wine or beer. isn't?
some of you are just a sick society infected with femenism, sexism and other perverted concepts. society of fucking liars.
no, i'm not going to be kind to a rotting society that pulls to the abyss a human standing next to him. i will fight through my music and similar posts so that branches of sanity begin to sprout in your head. crazy times 🤪

apologies if old news to this thread, i thought this was interesting

My first time playing Säule this past February was eye (and ear) opening. It became abundantly clear how sonically different my own works compared to my contemporaries.

These spaces shaped global taste.

That is interesting!

I'm also glad that Shawn Reynaldo, an old editor of mine, continues to be with me on the cranky side of things-- we used to spend afternoons making fun of all the shallow techno coming from Europe circa 2009-2010

blue light or electric light (the table is the table), Wednesday, 8 July 2020 11:14 (three years ago) link

I’ve seen some critique about said editor blocking black techno artists on twitter who disagreed with him but I have no idea whether it was a one-off thing or what

solo scampito (mh), Wednesday, 8 July 2020 15:39 (three years ago) link

Haven't heard wind of that. Will investigate...

That said, he was always on my side when I vociferously demanded we treat techno and house as originating in the Black and queer communities.

His writing on class in the electronic music scene is also indispensable

good on her for being responsive to the community she is part of, i suppose

should it matter at all though that academic consensus is that black madonnas generally don't represent ppl of african descent?

the late great, Monday, 20 July 2020 18:46 (three years ago) link

just tbc i think her decision is perfectly reasonable, if i were a touring musician i wouldn’t want a petition about my name following me around either

the late great, Monday, 20 July 2020 18:58 (three years ago) link

I'd never heard of black madonnas before, so I thought it was weird name choice when I first heard of her. I incorrectly read it as "Madonna, but black", and for some time as well.

I don't know her music though only the name!

saer, Monday, 20 July 2020 19:16 (three years ago) link

yeah i understand the perception is what's important. i wouldn't want to be dragged down in constantly trying to explain to ppl that i didn't actually mean a madonna who is of african descent (assuming that's the case)

the late great, Monday, 20 July 2020 21:03 (three years ago) link

should it matter at all though that academic consensus is that black madonnas generally don't represent ppl of african descent?

I sat down to compose a thoughtful reply to this, then realized that I'm lazy, and that also I don't buy her assertion that the more obvious meaning of "Black Madonna" didn't play into her name choice.

lukas, Monday, 20 July 2020 21:16 (three years ago) link

Well, she is Polish and from Chicago, right? The most famous of Black Madonnas is in Czestochowa, PL, so I can sort of see her using that name as she was coming up and it becoming more problematic as her star rose.

I think she's a great DJ, but don't care for her productions.

blue light or electric light (the table is the table), Monday, 20 July 2020 21:27 (three years ago) link

Just want to say that I'm in favor of people not liking things and saying so. Also it's funny to think that a few years ago I would have been laughing at the narcissism of small differences between music that all has the same beat (more or less) and is made out of short loops, but of course that's reductive. And even though I'm still not a big techno/house head, I have a lot more appreciation for the large effects that small differences can have. And if your track is a one bar loop, it's way harder than it looks to find the one bar loop that doesn't get boring or annoying over the course of 4 - 8 min.

Also this is a banger imo:

lukas, Friday, 28 August 2020 20:06 (three years ago) link

i'm not for or against people not liking things. not liking things is a natural part of life.

but long ago i realized that "writing about music" really is "dancing about architecture". and 90% of the "serious pop music criticism" on this board is actually not music criticism at all, it's just really bad cod-sociology (the right kind of people like this so it must be good! the wrong kind of people like this, so it must be bad!) or even worse, pointless and absurd speculation about shit 99% of people on this board really know nothing about (the internal life of the artists who made the music and the techniques they used to make it)

so given that none of us really have anything interesting or meaningful to say about music, we can either be either supportive and make people feel good when they post bobbins (by appreciating what they posted) or we can be whiny and passive-aggressive and make them feel bad about posting (by complaining about what they posted).

so i choose to say nice things when i can say nice things, and in general to say nothing when i can't say nice things, because i want to make people feel good if i can and i want to avoid making people feel bad

anyone who knows my 20 year ILX posting history is probably snickering at that statement, but hey the wisdom of age etc

i think when someone is actually super knowledgeable about a specific niche there is an opportunity for interesting negative criticism, but the smug, dilettantish kind of dismissal typically seen in EOY threads is embarrassing imo. i don't mind negative reactions here, i genuinely did enjoy seeing some opinions. though i am glad some people said they enjoyed the tracks i posted, otherwise i might've concluded i just don't belong on the bobbins thread anymore

I agree with most of the post, tlg. I now mostly resist making negative comments apart from when you really feel the urge to make a particular point. I'd criticise someone's opinion on a movie or book more readily but I'd still be reluctant to do so about something someone liked a lot but then again sometimes you've watched Midsommar and you really need to say something.

the music discussion i tend to enjoy nowadays is less analysis and more description. i wanna know more about music scenes i don't have first-hand access to, i like to be able to imagine myself in the situation in which the music sounds best

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 28 August 2020 21:08 (three years ago) link

I think it’s really just a question of “can this person say anything interesting about this music other than expressing their dislike”. It’s a lot harder to do so with something you dislike because there’s not much motivation to spend time with your dislike, examine it from multiple angles, come up with an articulation of it that isn’t just a patchwork of received wisdoms etc.

One way in is to frame the question as “what could this music do that would make me like it more?” But the problem is that most answers to that are just, “be more like this music over here which I am already emotionally or financially invested in boosting”, which is really just a device to excuse and justify further non-engagement.

In this thesis I will-

As for that track that caused the kerfuffle, I did go back and listen to it again, on my studio monitors. I still think the sample is wildly irritating, but the peak of distorted madness is kind of nice...I just don't like the rest of the track, which relies on an uncomplicated beat, little in terms of secondary rhythmic structures, and a vocal sample. It just doesn't move me at the moment, whereas the Sansibar track I posted above it is really where I'm at... Listening to a lot of electro these days!

I like descriptions of texture, vibe, and what kind of scene a techno/house/etc track might fit into and possibly a “TIP!” if it’s especially good

dance music is interesting in, like other types of sounds that might be more tracky than songy, there’s a place for standalone songs, dj tools, peak hour intensity, weird experiments

my thing with big room techno is just that big concrete dance clubs / sex dungeons with funktion one sound aren't even on the menu for a rich person right now. i mean they were always off the menu for me. and i'm over wanting to go to one anyway. it's just not attractive to me right now. i'm thinking of ostgut ton, i'm thinking of a recent ellen alien / matrixxman boiler room set i saw as an example. ellen was playing that kind of thing and it just looked so silly to me over streaming audio; i'm sure it would have been amazing in a concrete sex dungeon. idk what i'm really saying, sort of being randomly critical i guess. i still enjoy anything that anyone posts to this thread on some level.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 15 September 2020 03:43 (three years ago) link

Sorry to interrupt, Bobbins crew, I won't be here long.

I just wanted to ask Karl - that Peder Mannerfelt track you posted, I think that's the one that people are having such extreme reactions to? What *is* that?!?!?

I genuinely think it's amazing, and I want to hear more things that are like this, specific thing! It honestly sounds like being inside the engine hall at the Kew Bridge Steam Museum when all of the Beam Engines are in steam, and pounding away, the WHOMP of the beam that shakes the whole hall, the WHOOSH! of the pistons, the chattering of the pumps or the bobbins or whatever the individual engine is powering. It is the most machine-like thing I have ever heard outside of YouTube videos of "Germany's Most Giant Engines" and it is total audio stim and I want more.

(*I know nothing about genres or bobbins - the only other things that give me the same stimming sensation are Dustin Zahn - Stranger To Stability (Len Faki Podium mix) and maybe bits of Koenig Cylinders - Carousel. Can we have a thread maybe of "techno that genuinely sounds like being inside a Beam Engine"?)

Greta Grebo (Branwell with an N), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 13:25 (three years ago) link

idk of much that sounds like that specific bizarre sound, but i think of that track as catering to djs like cera khin, VTSS, mama snake, etc that are playing high bpm 90s rave sounds and are back into playing trance and gabba (i believe nina kravis has also been playing stuff like this though i haven't heard a set of hers in a long time.) peder mannerfelt comes from a pretty leftfield POV so the straight-ahead banger vibe of this track is not necessarily typical of him.

cera khin remixed a track by him last year

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xmcU7AgCGE

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 15 September 2020 14:11 (three years ago) link

i disagree with some of the takes on this thread that seemed to imply the original track in question was like big room berghain type stuff (its possible no one said this and i'm just conflating multiple posts into one take that was never taken)--yes its big room but it really isn't tasteful at all, it's intentionally obnoxious in that classic rave style and it belongs in a warehouse imo. it's designed for djs that see themselves as playing stuff as a reaction against the tasteful techno in-crowd, though obv it could be that as soon as nina kravis is playing stuff like this it is the in-crowd style

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 15 September 2020 14:22 (three years ago) link

Thanks for the info, Karl, that's really useful contextualisation.

The remix you posted doesn't really do the same thing for me. It has... well, it has more than one note? (Too many notes! Too many notes! Who am I, the emperor of Austria?) What really appealed was the relentless, one-tone no-melody machine element as much as the cheesy raveness. (Tho I am a fan of obnoxious rave, to be sure.)

But I checked out another of Peder's tracks through YouTube reccommendations, called 'Peder Mannerfelt - Psalm And Songs And Voices' and even though it had a completely different vibe (not a banger at all, far more slithery and infernal) it had the same no-melody relentlessness to it, so perhaps I should just explore further into his work.

Greta Grebo (Branwell with an N), Tuesday, 15 September 2020 14:30 (three years ago) link

and just a note about the conversation above: I don't particularly like Marc Houle, was just bringing him up as an example. I do think that the "noisy" aspects of his sound, particularly evidenced on records like Drift, were a little more interesting to me from a compositional standpoint... but a lot of his dancefloor singles have always sounded like shit to me.

but it's worth saying that I *never* liked Audion ("Mouth to Mouth" is nauseating imho) or Simon Mobile Disco or Switch. It's just not my thing.

As for yoga house, that's been a tendency in the Bay Area for years and years, it's repellent stuff.

I really know what I like and dislike at this point lol, particularly when it comes to more straight-up floor-oriented music. I've always kind of been an opinionated jerk about this sort of stuff, as I think anyone who remembers my posts from like 2006-2009 can attest, but really, I just want everyone to have a good time doing their own damn thing when it comes to dancing—.

In this case, I honestly love a lot of what Mamasnake and similar DJs do in their sets— I adore a lot of gabba and hard trance, for example. I think much of my problem is just with individual tracks, such as that Mannerfelt bit or "Mouth to Mouth"— I just don't feel like those tracks are very dynamic or interesting, merely propulsive.

a few things I've been feeling lately:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAJTnTINb5U

Chekov - Swerl - dreamy sparkling house on Shanti Celeste's label

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuYmPZ_eAqc

Pangaea - Like This - diva bumpiness that makes me think of mid-00s fidget house

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3k17sYUJJZE

Bambounou - TFTT - big-room arpeggios

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pg-sJMvYJXg

Dinky - Porkchops - Italo-disco that doesn't sound too reverent

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dATAQbMOA9g

Hodge - Cutie - romantic wistful chimes offset by tough drumwork

boxedjoy, Sunday, 29 November 2020 13:56 (three years ago) link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_DdqEmLPXY

Kink - Aerotrim - expected massiveness

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjYxLVdnESM

Sleep D - Freak Of... - proggy, trancey, muscular

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfY0gZzLV8o

Fantastic Man - Body Hurt - trippy house with an almost Baltimore club rhythm

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suVvlts_0mY

Karenn - Shoes Off - starts off as a sadbanger, ends up as noisy punishing techno

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ecdt9yUw_k

Locked Club - Russian Banya - jittery thick electro

boxedjoy, Sunday, 29 November 2020 14:04 (three years ago) link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajNk5HoR4HA

Mr G - Gathering NYC - it's Mr G, it's exactly what you expect, sturdy and meaty tech groove

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMB5XWESXYE

Object blue & TSVI - Turing Machine - just the right side of IDM to still be danceable and fun

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8ltDpMt3jY

Hame DJ - Zoot - like "Swerve 2" or "Erotic Discourse" but blissed-out

boxedjoy, Sunday, 29 November 2020 14:08 (three years ago) link

Some great stuff there, boxedjoy. "Russian Banya" is a big tip, exactly the sort of sound I'm obsessed with right now.

flopson, Monday, 30 November 2020 02:44 (three years ago) link

the electro revival is hit-or-miss for me, when it's done right I'm really into it but when it's not I find the sterility really alienating. It's weird because with other dance music forms like minimal or purist deep house I can find myself really enjoying it or just comfortable with its pleasantness even if it's not inspiring to me, but bad electro makes me react a bit harshly.

boxedjoy, Monday, 30 November 2020 06:49 (three years ago) link

See for me, a lot of the purist deep house stuff strikes me as so lacking in any sort of soul that I become upset.

lots of stuff not on Spotify obviously (I’d say about 40% is missing so far), but you take what you can get.
