Laugh and Peace - Vib-Ribbon OST

If you don't know what this is:

Vib Ribbon is a rhythm game in which players guide the main character, Vibri, across a line filled with obstacles tied in correspondence to the beat of the song.

The base game features six songs performed by an unaccredited Japanese singer which are divided up into bronze, silver, and gold courses containing two songs each. Additionally, players can generate levels using songs from music CDs, with difficulty varying depending on the intensity of the music. The soundtrack, according to Masaya Matsuura, was provided by a band called Laugh and Peace, with vocals by Yoko Fujita.

I would describe their sound as a bit like a low-fi 90s pop version of Dempagumi.inc - each song has passages where the tempo suddenly lurches forward, in order to make gameplay harder, and the overall effect is strange but good strange.

I haven't played this game since about 2001, but I have listened to the soundtrack quite a bit.

Anyway - here are all the songs.

I loved that game!

Sunny Day is the only one I could still remember and sing along from the title alone. Universal Dance is great, Overflowing Emotions and Roll Along suffer a bit from the tempo changes but they both really strongly remind me of The Wannadies.

Do Bust-a-Groove next!

My favourite was Laugh & Peace, the way it keeps speeding up and slowing down, on a re-listen Sunny Day might get my vote though.

Not sure if this is one of the best mini-LPs of all time or if I've just convinced myself of it by listening too much. Latest listening reveals hints of Cardiacs. Such inspired, unexpected musical decisions throughout. No, really.

Might get some more responses if you nudge the folks on ILG.

Oh my gawwwwd, the Bust-a-Groove and Um Jammer Lammy songs are still burned into my brain twenty years later. I WILL NEVER EVER RUN AWAY

I forgot that I even bought Vib-Ribbon from the PSN store. Guess I should look into playing more than five minutes of that, huh.

have to confess I have never played Bust-a-Groove or Um Jammer Lammy, is their music as good (or as odd) as this?

They’ve both got great songs

Parappa’s timing feels busted on a PS4 tho

Vib Ribbon was great but there’s a difficulty spike that just killed me every time I tried it

Feel like that was always a thing with these rhythm games, some hair-pulling point where I was like ARRRRGHH WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME, GAME and that I eventually figured out and then could do with ease, NBD.

It's good that this is a PSN release as I realized a while back to my deep chagrin that, while they're technically compatible, PS1 discs have like a microsecond delay on a PS3 that renders all rhythm games unplayable (RIP, Bust-a-Groove).

Yes i meant PS3!

The first Parappa is at least available for Vita through PSN, btw, and the second is available for PS4. Such a pain that you need a multitude of systems just to play the only games that have ever actually mattered in the history of gaming, sheesh.

(I don't know if it warrants an entire thread of its own but I wish there was a good place on ILG to fete rhythm games. So many good ones fly completely under the radar. The Patapon games for PSP, Orgarhythm for Vita, Retro/Grade for PS3, etc etc etc.)

hard not to vote for "sunny day"

whoa, didn't know about this! is there an equivalent of the "generate a level based on what's on a CD" gimmick? spotify or something?

I was going to say Kitty B is the only Bust-a-Groove keeper, but then I listened to the whole thing and Shorty and the EZ Mouse has been in my head all weekend.

(some good pop on there but nothing as inventive as vib ribbon)

Can't remember anything from Um Jammer Lammy, except 'Listen, I lost my Dojo. But, the Dojo remains in my mind. It even has a casino! Dojo, casino, it's all in the mind.'

I get that baby song from Um Jammer Lammy stuck in my head all the time, it's catchy af.

I NEED TO POTTY OR I'LL BE REAL NAUGHTY

It's like a koan.

Also yes to Shorty and the EZ Mouse. Although I still have no goddamn idea what an EZ Mouse is.

I started playing one of the Persona dance games on Vita this week, and it's fun and good but, man, where did all the memorable rhythm game music go? This stuff is pretty boilerplate + blah.
