some really nice versions on this one. fascinating to hear goodbye lucille in waltz time.

And the acoustic version of moving the river convinced me to vote for the song in the main poll.

Wasn't aware this was released as a standalone album. I just know them from being appended on to the Steve McQueen remaster.

I wanted to like the acoustic versions so much more than I did.

enochroot, Monday, 16 March 2020 12:33 (four years ago) link

I did too. I think I would have ultimately preferred demos/alt. versions instead for that reissue.

I defended this one a little in the other thread. Not really a big fan of the singles but dig the arrangements on the near beat-free spacey/showtune tracks quite a bit. It didn't make my ballot, however.

LOL. Kinda. My advocacy for this one probably got out of hand already in the other thread but at least 7 (maybe?) of these songs are, like, super-good in spite of the demo level arrangements. Still seems insane that he just gave up and popped the whole thing in his sock drawer for 17 years, or whatever.

I've actually started my day by listening to Andromeda Heights. It's probably the first time I've heard it in over 10 years. It's a very pretty album, but a lot of the songs are passing me by. The production really reminds me of ABC's Lexicon Of Love II. Might throw on Let's Change The World With Music next. That's another one I haven't heard in a long time.

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 16 March 2020 15:48 (four years ago) link

OTM. Sometimes feels like their best set of songs, but doesn't come together as an album for me. Maybe because the production's a bit more scattered; maybe because this is when I got into them, and it feels a little like listening to singles.

woof, Monday, 16 March 2020 15:51 (four years ago) link

Still don't get "Cars and Girls" (I dislike both) but "The Golden Calf" reminds me of the Go-Be's when they rock out, i.e. charmingly and awkwardly.

Who was the holdout who didn’t vote for Steve McQueen?

Andromeda Heights is way too low, I can understand some finding the production too cloying but the songs are up their with his best work.

Dan Worsley, Monday, 16 March 2020 17:06 (four years ago) link

Wow, it looks like I'm the only #1 vote for Langley Park. Steve McQueen is more consistent but it took a while to grow on me, whereas Langley Park bowled me over immediately and never stopped hitting.

J. Sam, Monday, 16 March 2020 17:09 (four years ago) link

It's funny the connections albums make. SM/TWG for me evokes summer of '88, dragging a ping pong table from basement to lawn on sunny Ballard days, playing beer pong with SM/TWG and Temple of Low Men cranked. Makes a quality album that much better.

the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Monday, 16 March 2020 18:54 (four years ago) link

I was surprised by the rollout - Steve McQueen and Jordan vying for the top two spots is totally expected, but I would have picked Megahertz to come third on ILX.

It has some really good songs, but From Langley Park To Memphis doesn't work as an album for me. I read an interview with McAloon where he spoke to Paul McCartney and McCartney referred to 'The King of Rock and Roll' as McAloon's 'My Ding-a-ling'.

It took me a long time to enjoy Swoon - it's just about the densest pop album I've ever heard.

aphoristical, Monday, 16 March 2020 21:14 (four years ago) link

I still don't really 'get' Swoon. Probably a factor in its durability for me.

Nice to see some positivity regarding AH here, after I went to bed.

Poor Crimson/Red though. No one wants to say anything about it at all? :)

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Monday, 16 March 2020 21:45 (four years ago) link

It starts off well and ends well, I can't remember much about the songs in between. This poll has reminded me how little attention I've paid to the albums since Jordan. I need to rectify that.

kitchen person, Monday, 16 March 2020 21:49 (four years ago) link

C/R certainly sounds great, probably due to the engineer, who I think also produced The Blue Nile's best albums. I rated "The Best Jewel Thief In The World" and "Billy" amongst my top tracks. Can't easily recall any of the others on that album, though.

One of the broken is way too low, it’s a beautiful lyric and it arrives at the point of the album where you might actually believe paddy is singing with the divine provenance

it's also one of paddy's own favorites, and who am i to argue with the man himself

Here's Paddy talking about 'Jordan: The Comeback' (available as a double LP for the first time) and how the tracks at the end helped define the final sound of the album.

donna summer is the first from my ballot to place! really amazing b-side, feels like a slightly softer and dreamier cousin of "hallelujah"

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 17 March 2020 14:36 (four years ago) link

I didn't end up voting for any B-sides. If I'd had another 20 places I would have found room for Donna Summer and a couple of others.

Couldn't Bear To Be Special is one of the songs that really stood out when I first got Swoon about 15 years ago. I'd already had Steve McQueen for years, but weirdly it was Swoon that made me get obsessed with them. This song in particular just got into my head. It's brilliant they put such a strange downbeat song out as a single (although it I guess that was fairly common in the early 80s). I love the way he sings, "I couldn't bear.. RIGHT!" with that noise that follows.

Cornfield Ablaze just missed my list. Definitely the standout from their weakest album.

"You overwhelmed agricultural man,/You wild pyromaniac daughter of Pan"
Magnificent.

woof, Tuesday, 17 March 2020 15:09 (four years ago) link

Billy was a late cut for me. Was scrambling around for reasons to trim, and it feels a bit lopsided - third verse hasn't got much new, and the coda strolls along amiably enough for too long. BUT it's brought SO much joy by then - the flickering between bill, billy, william, "her smile is like a fairground", and that "Trumpets come and trumpets go/Amazing what gets left out in the snow".

woof, Tuesday, 17 March 2020 15:18 (four years ago) link

Glad to see Donna Summer placing. I put it in my top 10. As much as I love the slow lounge version, the thrashy version they did as a three-piece live is great.

righteousmaelstrom, Tuesday, 17 March 2020 15:31 (four years ago) link

Jeff W, Tuesday, 17 March 2020 17:06 (four years ago) link

Billy and Cornfield Blaze are both major late-career highlights for me - placing so low probably indicates there's not a whole lot more to come from the post-Andromeda Heights albums.

"jordan: the comeback" is such an odd track with the spoken word elvis impression in the verses and the endless repetition of the chorus, but what a great chorus! i still don't really understand what the track is supposed to be about though - there's elvis obviously, secretly alive and planning a comeback? and jordan is the river jordan of biblical importance right? but i'm not sure what it's supposed to symbolis and looking that up doesn't really provide any clear answers that relate to the track, so how all that fits together i have no clue. a lot of the lyrics on this album are like that for me - there's american iconography and religious references but thrown together in a way that's intriguing but i have no idea how to make sense of.

"hey manhattan" just missed my ballot but listening now i think i should have voted for it after all

When I had my ridiculously belated LCTWWM epiphany a month or two ago "Ride" was the track that first reeled me in. The rest of the record revealed its charms more slowly, but seemed to overshadow "Ride" somewhat, such that I'm pretty sure I didn't contribute at all to this placement. Nice work, you six people!

Wow i'd always sort-of overlooked One Of The Broken but yeah that's a beaut. I think Jordan is classic for that 'some tracks get lost in the shuffle' thing you sometimes get; mainly because it's so long of course.

Even the shorter SM/TWG is kind of like that. For instance, I'm already regretting not casting a vote for "Blueberry Pies", which I have always thought would be a great song for Sade to cover. Hope it gets its props!

A December 2nd, 1985 release for Protest Songs, that flyer claimed.

Anyway, I must suspend proceedings. It's kinda way too late here now. Do talk amongst yourselves!

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 14:50 (four years ago) link

there's elvis obviously, secretly alive and planning a comeback? and jordan is the river jordan of biblical importance right? but i'm not sure what it's supposed to symbolis and looking that up doesn't really provide any clear answers that relate to the track, so how all that fits together i have no clue.

I think it's comeback as redemption and rebirth/rebaptism (ie Jordan as the place of John the Baptist's work, esp the baptism of Jesus). But yes it's totally a messy album full of parallels and analogues and personal typology, with the death of American icons scrambled up with Satan & side 4's redemption songs. God I love it.

Didn't vote for much from it though - the second half does just kind of flow, and much as I love everything that's place, I never really listen to them separately.

woof, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 15:06 (four years ago) link

So many classics already today.. and Horsin' Around. Steve McQueen is still one of my favourite albums of all time, but I could definitely live without that one.

The transition from Jesse James Symphony to Bolero is one of my favourite moments on the album. All the Jordan songs that have placed are absolute gold.

I can't see much more from Protest Songs placing at this point. Maybe just Life Of Surprises? I thought The World Awake would be higher. They have some amazing album openers.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 15:16 (four years ago) link

"the world awake" kinda feels like the last blush of swoon-era prefab. it's those weird backing vocals. wop-a-doooo

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 15:18 (four years ago) link

kitchen person, Wednesday, 18 March 2020 15:46 (four years ago) link

i didn't listen to swoon until i was intimately familiar with the albums that followed, but it's been great hearing echoes of that songwriting approach in his later works (or 'earlier works' in some cases, since many of the steve songs were written so much earlier than they were recorded)

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 18 March 2020 16:02 (four years ago) link

Horsin Around = BLISS. My #13. "I guess I let that little vow get lost / forgetting the cost", Wendy drifting in and out of Paddy's vocals, the midstream slowdown to the parsed out "I … deserve … to be … kicked … so … lightly. You … deserve … more … than … I … sold … you for", the very last belted out "Horsin around! HUH!"...

Enjoying getting different perspectives here on tracks I enjoy but more in the album context, that other people rate singly: Paris Smith, Doo-Wop in Harlem, etc. What a strong catalog he has. Really hope this rumored Femmes Mythologiques loss is just delay. Would ask for the same care to Paddy's vault that Prince gave his.

"horsin' around" is one of the few inessential tracks on steve mcqueen, shocked it's higher than "when the angels"
"doo-wop in harlem" was in my top 10, a perfect closer
"jesse james bolero" was also in my top 10, a fantastic melody and an arrangement that feels sort of epic in scope

There are faint parallels here with my reaction to "Step Into My Office Baby" in the B&S poll. One of their best known songs. A goofy and potentially divisive opening track on a mid-career album. One has to appreciate the craft and, I guess, the, er, bold move that is the chorus. It was always going to place somewhere around here, like "SIMOB". But I probably wouldn't mind all *that* much if I never heard it again! :)

I love Lions In My Own Garden, and maybe it's one where arm's length works. "The rumours have started that we are both young" is one of my favourite lines by anyone. It's sort of low-key heartbreaking, once it sinks in.

Hi there! There's just something about Lions In My Own Garden. It's another one that I get stuck in my head almost daily and constantly hovers around my top 10 songs of all time list. Such an amazing and mysterious debut single. I mentioned Gary Mulholland's two books on the voting thread. The way he wrote about Lions in This Is Uncool was so brilliant and made me want to check it out instantly.

Scarlet Nights was the last song I cut from my list. Looking back now that seems like a ridiculous decision.

Looking For Atlantas might be my favourite Sprout opener. I love the energy the song has. My favourite moment is the way he sings, "and I know" in the very last part of the chorus.

Nice on the 1st place voter - that's a great track to choose. Kind of like The Blue Nile to me, Paddy makes amazing what could be treacle with a lesser lyricist or singer. Such as

Woke up to the sound of pouring rain
The wind would whisper and I'd think of you
And all the tears you cried, that called my name
And when you needed me I came through

Remember yesterday, walking hand in hand
Love letters in the sand, I remember you
Through the sleepless nights through every endless day
I'd want to hear you say, I remember you oh oh

From Wikipedia: "The musica universalis (literally universal music), also called music of the spheres or harmony of the spheres, is an ancient philosophical concept that regards proportions in the movements of celestial bodies—the Sun, Moon, and planets—as a form of music."

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Thursday, 19 March 2020 20:46 (four years ago) link

Moving the River is my favourite from the second side of Steve McQueen. I probably should have voted for more Steve McQueen tracks - I heard it years before any other Prefab album, before my fandom really kicked in, so I always take it for granted a bit.

I like how We Let The Stars Go is about Michael Jackson:
"I wrote this in August 1988 - the day Michael Jackson played Leeds. I had tickets but I gave them away because I love Michael Jackson and I thought it would spoil the dream. And I'm glad I did 'cos I wrote this. It's a phrase that could've been in any song over the last 40 years - 'we let the stars go'. Its very Hollywood."

http://www.ferhiga.com/prefab/entrevistas/psf_trk1990_eng.htm

Apparently Sound of Crying started as being about Michael Jackson too. Paddy McAloon originally wrote the song in April 1990[1] for a proposed biographical album about Michael Jackson, who he was fascinated by. The verses originally listed unhappy things that had happened to Jackson,[1] while the original lyrics of the chorus were "Only the boogie music / Will never, ever let you down".[2][3][4]

aphoristical, Thursday, 19 March 2020 20:52 (four years ago) link

He should definitely recycle "Only the boogie music / Will never, ever let you down".

Somehow I encoutered the title of "Stars" years before I actually heard it. I recall imagining that it was about about a hostage situation!

Ice maiden was my number 3, everything about it is amazing. My fav moments: the ringing guitar and echoing scream during the second bridge, the almost imperceptible key change, when the groove really kicks into gear after returning from “all these nights I’ve dreamt of you”

one of my fav tricks of paddy's is his use of drastic key changes, not a half step or a whole step, but big intervals. ice maiden has a key change up a fifth, and it's a super cool effect, because he's playing the same chord that open the song, but the harmonic context makes it feel so different.

scarlet nights and the jordan title track have these kind of big interval key changes too, but they're a lot more noticeable

Ah, voodoo chili's clue makes sense. Great song that's found a new audience with younger groups. Pretty high on my list as I recall.

This song always reminds me of New Zealand's former prime minister harassing a young waitress by repeatedly pulling her ponytail.

quite possibly the classiest song ever recorded

ooga booga-ing for the bourgeoisie (voodoo chili), Thursday, 19 March 2020 23:00 (four years ago) link

'When Love Breaks Down' has a convoluted history - released as a single in 1984 and again in 1985. Also in different mixes and lengths on the UK and US versions of the album.

I've neglected to prepare a witty false #1 or whatever. So, if you wish, imagine an entry for "Farmyard Cat" or something at around this point, with a suitably amusing image, etc. :)

let's change the world with music was a whole unfinished album taken from the vaults and tweaked a little, and the songs on crimson/red date back to 1997 at the earliest apparently, he went through the vaults to choose songs to record as well as writing new ones for it. i don't think he has like rdj amounts of unreleased material but i'll happily believe he has a decent amount of demos for unreleased songs lying around at least

Thanks for a fantastic poll Nag, every time the current situation started to get to me I would relieve the pressure with a bit of PS therapy!

Coming out of this I now know:

a) Of the three PS albums I own, Swoon is now my go-to and I have had snippets of songs from it bouncing around in my head for weeks...usually with the lyrics incorrect! Every song is awesome and Here on the Eerie and Ghost Town Blues were robbed.

b) Listening to the others on Spotify for a few weeks is not long enough to absorb them - dismiss a PS song at your peril; Hey Manhattan has got its hooks into me since I wrote my poll, what I thought was light and inconsequential has now become essential head music. Those disco strings are what done it.

c) As others have said, at least 3 of their albums for me would rank above most bands best single album...and those are just the ones I know well (albums 1, 2 and 5).

d) I need to own I Trawl the Megahertz NOW (and probably all the others)!

Can we do another one next week please?

Another thanks for running this, Nags. Great music to have in my head this past week.

Only shut out on three: Michael (my #8), Bearpark (22), Life's a Miracle (29). The End of the Affair is so aggressively catchy in a If You Don't Love Me vein, but the demo beat and "I know, I know..." of Bearpark make it my favorite b-side.

Kudos to the lone Farmyard Cat vote! I was close to putting it on mine. It might be slight, but there's a glee in singing along with "Me - Me - Yow". Makes me think of the house-raising fight in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers".

Only myself to blame for not voting, but I was *shocked* to see no placing for 'Girl I'm Here'

Yes - thank you! Haven't been around as much as I'd like to chatter & comment - things a little busy because of the you-know-what - but it's been great to dip in.

I'd never heard the End of the Affair! So extra thanks to all the voters for that.

I scan down the post-40 results and just keep thinking 'but but but that's an amazing song' - Ghost Town Blues at 72! Some catalogue.

Proud to be lone voter for Green Isaac II. I like it sitting there right at the end.

thank you Nag! one of the reasons that i made an unranked ballot was when i thought about Appetite and Bonny, i just could not pick one over the other. i sort of lost track of this band after Langley came out for some reason even though they were a total fave at the time. it and wasn't until Brad's Jordan enthusiasm a few months ago instigated somewhat of a rabbit hole excursion. but what a freaking solid discography, half of which i was completely unfamiliar with a couple weeks ago. oh, and my god, the vinyl reissue of Jordan is an amazing pressing and exquisite listen

thank you for the poll.
somehow i forgot to submiss my votes, but this will be a great soundtrack for the quarantine.
probably 'desire as' would be my #1.

Nourry, Friday, 20 March 2020 14:22 (four years ago) link

Thanks for the poll and the discussion.
Definitely enjoyed listening to these albums again especially the more obscure B-sides and the albums I don't care for as much (Gunmen, ITtMhz).

Also, thanks to whomever posted the chord walkthrough videos. The first two records in particular have such unusual and interesting chord progressions but hearing them so much over the years diluted the impact/shock. Watching them played through made me appreciate them, esp. the Swoon songs, much more.

Note on albums. Flipped on TWG and Jordan a dozen times. I also vacillated on Andromeda Heights, Crimson/Red and LCTWTM as my fifth place and now wish I would have gone with Andromeda since it placed so low. I get a lot of the criticisms of that record, but if if you can get passed the easy listening instrumental passages and the prominent alto sax it has as many great songs (Prisoner, Electric Guitars, title track, Weightless, Swans, Avenue of Stars, Whoever You are) as the other those later records. To me Andromeda is a much better record than Protest Songs which outside a few songs (The World Awake, LoS, Pearly Gates) seems more undercooked and demo-y than LCTWM.

Note on songs. Totally flaked on Desire As - definitely should have been in the top 20 (as my wife immediately pointed out). Surprised by the lack of love for Last of the Great Romantics, Pearly Gates, and Meet the New Mozart, but baffled most by vote totals for Horsin' Around.

My Ballot:

1. Jordan: The Comeback
2. Two Wheels Good/Steve McQueen

5. Crimson/Red

Yes, the Andromeda Heights era in general suddenly sounded a lot better to me - I haven't really revisited since feeling deep disappointment at the time.

woof, Friday, 20 March 2020 16:05 (four years ago) link

I didn't vote in the lyrics poll (much too difficult, plus a couple of sentences taken out of context always seem underwhelming) but surprised that there were no votes for any lyrics from The Songs of Danny Galway. Ostensibly about Jimmy Webb, the lyrics of the second and third verses also seem to incorporate Paddy's post Swoon lyrical aspirations and are a good summation of his catalogue.

"In words he paints a vivid scene
Of places you may not have been
Yet listen and you're moved to swear
I know that house, I've climbed that stair
I've shared those overwhelming feelings
I've suffered loss, I've known such joy
Emotions we all know are burnished till they glow"

"chord changes like Baptist hymns
They lift your spirit till its soars
Till you forget that spirit's yours
Sound and word in sweet communion
Echoes of a better world
Where chivalry's not dead, we'll look for it instead"

bressonian, Friday, 20 March 2020 16:11 (four years ago) link

On the C/R artist tributes I really love Mysterious too. When he's describing the "quicksilver task", it's like "to catch the world in images" fine, fine, bit flat maybe, but then "to annotate the feast" just a marvel.

^ I care. Yours were the only other votes for "The Yearning Loins" and "Radio Love". Which means you roolz!

It just occurred to me that this is the first poll for which I've done the number-crunching where absolutely everyone submitting tracks also submitted an albums ballot. The latter is usually a smaller pool. This is surely a crucial and significant outcome, hinting at some deep truth about the artist but I'm not entirely sure what!
