zemko (bob), Thursday, 23 January 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Zemko I have a promo of the album. To be honest I'm a bit meh on it after a few listens - the only track I listen to consistently is "Raping Silence" which is grebt cos it meanders in a way that reminds me of the unmedicated loon who used to march up and down my street howling at the crack of dawn every morning.

    mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 23 January 2003 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Howard Tate (vintage soul), I & I by Massive Attack and Mos Def, Bobby King & Terry Evans's version of Dark End Of The Street (soul again), an old Culture session from Peel's show, the most undervalued Spector song, Bonnie And The Treasures' Home Of The Brave, some old Boymerang (D&B), the Can't Get You Out Of My Head/Blue Monday boot, the Casinos' Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye (maybe my favourite doowop song), some old Clay Hammond tunes (soul again), the bootleg of The Real Slim Shady with added Cartman, the Destiny's Child/Nirvana Smells Like Teen Booty boot, and I'm now listening to some Digital tracks (D&B again). I may well be forgetting some.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 23 January 2003 20:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I subjected myself to a crappy radio station so I could hear them advertising my band's gig on Friday, then I listened to both discs of the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan: Final Studio Sessions (ironically released by American Records), then it was Radiohead's OK Computer, followed by Mr. Bungle's Disco Volante, and then Non-Phixion, and I'm 'bout to leave on the good foot with Sly & the Family Stone accompanying me on my way out the door.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 23 January 2003 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

    yesterday:

Hwyl Nofio - Hymnal (not as good as the gorgeous 'The Singers and Harp Players are Dumb', despite track with Mark "Rothko" Beazley on bass. the church-organ drone pieces - pure, repetitive - worked best)

Markus - s/t (short CD-R of solo Dirty Three-meets-Pentangle beauty from Kemialliset Ystävät/Anaksimandros member. Exquisite)

Les Rallizes Denudés - Fucked up and Naked, Vol. 2 (soundboard '69-'91? obv. boot - no info whatsoever. mostly murky and plodding, with too-infrequent flashes of Rallizes' cosmic egg-cracking force)

Träd Gräs och Stenar - Djungelns Lag (got very impatient and stopped it three tracks in. sounded fine, just the wrong mood)

Tennis - Furlines (maybe the most faceless and nondescript album i've ever heard)

Susanne Brokesch - So Easy Hard to Practice (anti-techhouse whipped up from old opera LPs. bizarre but incredibly warm)

went to sleep to: Robert Cacciapaglia - Generazioni del Cielo

i'm scared...i found out i own over 1,000 cd's - when will i have time to listen to them all. today, on the way to work, i only had the radio.

yesterday...cheating, i know.. i listened to the 2nd half of illadelph halflife by the roots and started in on damien rice's first cd album. lent to me by a friend.

the roots, as you would expect is pure, organic hip hop ecstasy...soul in the hole. it makes your bones go rubbery and the smile appear like dawn's first yawning.

Hey, I'm all about early JA. Takes Off rules! (btw, have you heard about poor signe's troubles these days?! Unbelievable).

search party is of course one of those infamous four figure recs .. I asked kate Village about the lp cause they had the reissue for sale, and I was all ready for her to be "It's amazing!! You gotta buy it!". But she was sort of lukewarm, so I passed .. still, I Gotta hear it...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 26 January 2003 09:53 (twenty-three years ago)

no what's up with signe, i haven't heard about that.
yeah it's not all the way fantastic but (esp if yr really into early airplane) a few of the songs are really great. how much is the rapturedelic reissue worth, is that 1 of those reissues that's now also worth skidilllions of dollars, i hope so. not that i even wanna sell it, it's just nice knowing that things are worth money. me i didn't pay lots for it, i got it in a swap for some stuff.

I thought it was the Void dude that did the most recent reissue? I'm not sure, I think it was him...

Anyway, the deal w/ Signe is that she is basically broke. She lives in Oregon and lost her job this year, and is racking up medical bills to boot (she's had cancer in and out of remission for a while) (these things happen when you turn 60, unfortunately). Anyway, because of some ancient music biz contract crap she basically gets no money from that 1st lp..

I've been listening to Beethoven's 5th a lot over the last days. I've also been playing the first side of Boston's Don't Look Back a lot, to verify if I was being accurate when I said "Don't Look Back" might be my favourite single. I listen to it so critically that I've been enjoying it less than the rest of the side. I totally love "A Man I'll Never Be". Origin too. And a bunch of pop singles. And Derek Bailey.

    t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 1 February 2003 03:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Mostly freaking out on nostalgia tonight, grabbing and reliving random songs from random albums mostly from earlier times in my lfie:

    Various tracks from Area albums
    Badger, One Live Badger
The Beatles' "I've Got a Feeling" from Let It Be
The Four Tops' "If I Were a Carpenter"
    King Crimson's "Indiscipline" from Discipline
Led Zeppelin, "Boogie with Stu" from Physical Graffiti
Renaissance, "Let It Grow" and "Carpet of the Sun" from Ashes are Burning
Roxy Music, first side of Manifesto
Talking Heads' "Born Under Punches" from Remain in Light
Yes' "Beyond and Before" from Yes

But also was listening to fairly newer stuff (to me) as well:

Chicago's 1st album (actually, pretty damn impressive; "Introduction" kicks ass)
    Petula Clark's "I Know a Place"
John Greaves' Parrot Fashions I'm trying to think who he reminds me of...maybe John Cale? Aren't they both Welsh?
Peter Hammill's A Black Box and Fireships
Anthony Phillips & Harry Williamson's Tarka (not the tank-armadillo, alas, but the otter)
Thinking Plague's "Behold the Man" and "This Weird Wind" from In Extremis
    Vangelis, first side of Mask

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 1 February 2003 03:29 (twenty-three years ago)

"Beyond and Before" is a killer song. I rock that one all the time. Usually take the lp off after that, unfortunately. although I also like that song "Yesterdays". But you can't really rock it.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 1 February 2003 03:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Stuff I just bought, mostly: La Lupe, Johnny Colon, Fela, Red Hot + Riot, Cornelius (I borrowed from the library), and Kate Bush's The Dreaming (which I already had) this morning.

I don't think I've bought so many recordings of such a variety good music as I have in the past month+couple days, for a long time.

    Michael B, Tuesday, 4 February 2003 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

'Olu Iwa' - Cecil Taylor. Live recording from 86, two diff performances - the Unit, inc. Peter Brotzmann, Frank Wright, William Parker, super-appropriate percussion/marimba from Thurman Barker (great jazz name or wot?), and an amazing geezer called Earl McIntyre on trombone, who seems to be one of those jazz players who only turns up on abt 2 other releases, ever (see also the terrific vibraphonist Earl Griffith, on the much earlier Taylor alb 'Looking Ahead'), PLUS a quartet perf from the preceeding day, gd sound, sells new for less than a tenner, long running time, totally rampant outness from all involved, not bad sleevenotes from Art Lange, 10/10 must-have-double-bag item!

    Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 4 February 2003 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

and frosting on the beater! you're giving your ears and brain auditory centre a good time!

this morning on the train and walking to work i listened to:
    fischerspooner - #1
    les rythmes digitales - darkdancer

willem (willem), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

    " smashing pumpkins - adore "

smashingly, or pumpkin-wise, i'd rather prefer that one as well
...early this morning, however, i did listen to s.p.'s 'machina', and did not find *that* adorable, let alone god-like, at all

    t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

    ok here it goes...

Miles Davis - Black Satin (from the excellent 'On The Corner Album' that I have really got into lately)

Dizzy Rascal - I Luv U (the Reynolds man has done it again...read his blog downloaded this choon, messy grimey and nasty, love it)

Ladytron - Evil (Slinky sexy synthpop for the millenium, oh and great hooks too, this lot could be quite big...a Human League for the noughties?)

Fischerspooner - Emerge(Naughty's Zugabe) I love this mix...discotastic beatless heaven that chic style guitar gets me everytime....

LCD Soundsystem - Loosing my Edge (an older tune but still a class track)

John Coltrane - Equinox (quality Jazz, which I am getting into at the mo')

GZA - Liquid Swords (one of the best Hip Hop albums from the mid nineties, with super tight production from the RZA and amazing emceeing from the GZA)

Stakker - Humanoid (Electro Acid House brilliance..with a bassline that still does the business to this day..)

Maimonides (Maimonides), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Megiddo The Devil And The Whore (pounding anthemic black metal)
Mortuary Drape All The Witches Dance (Live 1987) (obscure archaic Italian black metal)
Graveland Memory And Destiny (proud, defiant, determined and universally hated but he's really got a magical formula here)
    Binary Finary 2002 (more remixes...)
Shakira vs Gigi d'Agostino Tango (apparently a liveset rip, bordering on the rediculous but immensely catchy)
Room 5 ft Oliver Cheatham Make Luv (Axwell Remix) (one of the new remixes, even more discofied than the original 2001 incarnation)
Legowelt Disco Rout (the sound of the west coast)
Forgotten Woods Sjel Av Natten (their '94 demo - melancholic reverb-drenched drawn-out dronemetal à la Burzum)

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

only got up recently, but so far just safe as milk by captain beefheart...
