Whose over-the-top Grammy performance will make the least sense this year?

No Doubt's drummer just drummed his way out of a giant barrel, if that's any indicator.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 24 February 2003 01:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Gwen Stefani sounded horrible but had on great boots, so I excuse it all.

I'm more confused as to why Simon & Garfunkle were deemed by Dustin Hoffman (?! Why is he there?) as the epitome of everything. What does it mean?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 01:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm more confused as to why Simon & Garfunkle were deemed by Dustin Hoffman (?! Why is he there?) as the epitome of everything.

It took me a while to realize he was there because of the connection to The Graduate. Still -- what a boring anti-climax to start the Grammys. I blame Sony-CBS synergy.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 01:25 (twenty-three years ago)

OMIGOD! Kylie and Justin!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 01:26 (twenty-three years ago)

OMIGOD i lost that i forgot grammys was today. damn anyway sony will probably rerun a few times

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Monday, 24 February 2003 01:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Just turned it on. How does anyone with a pair of ears enjoy Faith Hill?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 01:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Paul Schaeffer *IS* Velvet Jones in the Year 3000!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 01:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to see Vanessa Carlton naked.....but she's singing out of tune.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 01:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Good lord, John Mayer is embarassing. Why does he do that to his face while singing? I'm cringing on his behalf.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 01:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha this banter is so bad!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 24 February 2003 01:49 (twenty-three years ago)

And of course, Mayer just won. Yep, off to a great start...

Jesse Fox, Monday, 24 February 2003 01:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Guess who's back.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 24 February 2003 01:52 (twenty-three years ago)

John Mayer makes me want to kill people, in particular John Mayer.

Eminem looks like he's on the verge of tears, what the hell?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 01:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally, your post is a wonderland.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 24 February 2003 01:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Eminem looks like he's on the verge of tears, what the hell?

He always looks like that, doesn't he? I don't get it. He's funny in his music, but it's like he never even smiles in public. Of course, neither does Dustin Hoffman...

Jesse Fox, Monday, 24 February 2003 01:57 (twenty-three years ago)

ARRGH JODY THAT WAS SO EVIL. My nickname in grade school was Allison Wonderland - could this influence my John Mayer hatred? Probably.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 01:59 (twenty-three years ago)

are sheryl crow and kid rock performing their song!?!?!?

reo fordecor, Monday, 24 February 2003 02:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Remind me again why you people hate Coldplay?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

That performance wasn't reminder enough?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:23 (twenty-three years ago)

OH MY GOD. That PCS commercial with Little Richard was the greatest performance at the Grammys so far.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I take that back as Harvey Fierstein and Rod Stewart just walked out. I never expected something so surreal from the Grammys.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

durn I wanted "Complicated"

Aaron A., Monday, 24 February 2003 02:33 (twenty-three years ago)

She knocked over the mic stand! Definitely punk...

Jesse Fox, Monday, 24 February 2003 02:37 (twenty-three years ago)

This is funny, because I don't have any TV channels, but I like the idea of people commenting while the program is still on, so I keep flipping back to this thread to see what's happening and I think I'm surprised in a way I'd never be if I were really watching it. (I also don't know what most of the people sound like, but I'm just imagining that).

tom (other one), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Donnie Brat, Monday, 24 February 2003 02:44 (twenty-three years ago)

God. Nelly. Ughhh...

Just close your eyes and think of all the tuxedoed baby boomers in that audience noddin' they heads to Nelly at this very moment.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:46 (twenty-three years ago)

If the folks behind the Grammys really wanted to make the show more FUN and SPONTANEOUS and APPEALING TO THE YOUF MARKET, they could do no worse than getting rid of all those awkward medleys. Here's one song I'm nominated for! And here's the other song I'm nominated for!

Oooh...too soon with the pyrotechnics, you know?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Fred Durst: "This war should go away as soon as possible."

Aaron A., Monday, 24 February 2003 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

we're tape delayed so john mayer just won, he looks like a grown-up version of kevin arnold.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh, tough crowd for Robin Williams. But no crowd could ever be tough enough.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 02:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Fred Durst was so adorable. "The war is bad! Heavy metal is good!"

I have come to believe that singing brings Bruce Springsteen intense pain, because there's no other explanation for that face he always makes when he sings.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to make a confession. I have -- seriously -- found "The Rising" really moving, no doubt for all the reasons Bruce intended, yet I also can't listen to it without thinking he's singing "COME ON UP FOR VERIZON."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd like to see Vanessa Carlton naked.....but she's singing out of tune.

She is obviously the most punk of all.

original bgm, Monday, 24 February 2003 03:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Verizon sucks ass, I hate them with all of my wonderland body. I wish them pestulence.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, Miss Badu. Oh.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

More war commentary, from Ja Rule: in this time of terrorism, we should all be thankful for...Ashanti.

Jesse Fox, Monday, 24 February 2003 03:18 (twenty-three years ago)

The announcer just promised "an Eminem you'd never thought you'd see." Well, that explains Harvey Fierstein's presence, then.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Or maybe it's Em + Springsteen. Horrible either way.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Ed Bradley intro'ing the Bee Gees? Explanation, please!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:25 (twenty-three years ago)

NEVER BEEN SO FUCKING GLAD NOT TO BE WATCHING TV: ME!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Cum On Up Yer Verizon!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Fred Durst's "less war, more heavy metal" speech better than Ja Rule's. Though Ja wins points for wearing a military-themed outfit. That was a special touch.

What, Mike, Ed Bradley can't like the Bee Gees?

Eminem is going to come out and cry and scream all emo-style.

OH GOD NSYNC'S BEE GEES TRIBUTE MAKES ME WISH I WAS DEAD.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Waitm I thought N'SYNC at least could sing!

Aaron A., Monday, 24 February 2003 03:30 (twenty-three years ago)

The best thing was how INTO IT Justin was doing the beatbox. I mean, his head damn near flipped off his body, he was bopping it so hardcore. He is streets, fools.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Best thread of the year, and it's never made me gladder that I have no cable at all.

Remind me again why you people hate Coldplay?

Because their music should be the soundtrack to their own strangulation.

He is streets, fools.

Can a Timberlake/Mike Skinner collaboration be in the cards?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:34 (twenty-three years ago)

See, I don't need to watch the Grammys because Ally and Mike's commentary is better than watching.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Why is everyone singing off-key? Coldplay are the only ones so far who have been on pitch. Does someone with experience in this type of thing have insight?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:36 (twenty-three years ago)

See, I don't need to watch the Grammys because Ally and Mike's commentary is better than watching.

Damn straight. I want you two to host next year.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm still thinking about Harvey Fierstein/Rod Stewart. Why was Harvey dressed like that? Why did Rod Stewart have that chihuahua? What did Robin Williams have to do with it? None of it computed, it was like for 5 glorious minutes, "The Birdcage" threw up on the Grammys, then it was back to Norah Goddamned Jones.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps Eminem is going to do a medley of Chicago songs.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:39 (twenty-three years ago)

He's performing with the Roots. "Eminem like you've never seen him!" apparently means with an enjoyable, sensible decision in co-performer.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:40 (twenty-three years ago)

avril's band looked like cheap trick.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

That would be awesome.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

OH MY GOD EMINEM'S SHIRT IS A TREAT! Where do I get a "FREE YAYO" shirt?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Fuck the Roots! Jay-Z already did that. I actually was wondering if he was gonna perform "acoustic." I thought Shady didn't give a fuck. Now he wants points for playing with "real musicians." sheeeit. next thing you know he won't wanna kill us.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Eminem is officially NOT punk, if he's playing at the Grammy's with a goddamn BAND.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:43 (twenty-three years ago)

What, Mike, Ed Bradley can't like the Bee Gees?

Just why him, out of all the people in the world?

I forsee Anthony DeCurtis going on the Today Show tomorrow and telling Katie Couric that Em + The Roots' version of "Lose Yourself" was the last night's best Grammy performance.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)

FREE YAYO

The hell? Explain plz.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:45 (twenty-three years ago)

The hell? Explain plz.

Obviously this. Or not.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:47 (twenty-three years ago)

They seem free enough, they do.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:47 (twenty-three years ago)

A tribute to the Clash, huh? Gotta luv that Sony juggernaut.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Ed Bradley: Because Travolta wasn't available.

Ned, explain? Blimey you sheltered Californians.

Springsteen, Costello, and Dave Grohl: was anyone actually clamoring to see this that they keep announcing it as the world-exclusive first ever performance of the three together?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Google not helpful.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

tony yayo (from d12?) ... he's on the 50 cent album.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Eminem in fucking with us shockah?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Springsteen, Costello and Dave Grohl should have done the Bee Gees tribute.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

And Jay-Z would pimp for Heinie, wouldn't he? Bastard.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Eminem is officially NOT punk, if he's playing at the Grammy's with a goddamn BAND.

You have to think of it this way:

Supporters: "See, by mocking the Grammies then giving into them, Eminem shows what an inventive, relentlessly fascinating performer he is!"

Me: "Get stuffed."

Ned, explain? Blimey you sheltered Californians.

I have no freakin' idea who or what Yayo is, and generally speaking I don't deal with pop culture because I don't watch TV or listen to the radio! I only just heard a 50 Cent song the other day and it wasn't much cop, f'r instance.
Repeat ad nauseum.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I think "free yayo" is what he'll be getting as the advance on his next album.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:50 (twenty-three years ago)

i.e. this

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh my god, now I feel like a drug addict. You're all taking "Free" in the wrong context, which is exactly what he wanted.

That commercial with Jay-Z was also a treat! His house is full of champagne and alize and still he reaches for the Heinekin! And the bitch gets none! OH!

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)

He can share with Britney, then.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the way my comment ended up being placed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

STOP FUCKING WITH YOUR THUMB, VINCE VAUGHN

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:54 (twenty-three years ago)

eww!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:54 (twenty-three years ago)

That commercial with Jay-Z was also a treat! His house is full of champagne and alize and still he reaches for the Heinekin! And the bitch gets none! OH!

I understood the ad as a coded reference to his secret sexual life.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:55 (twenty-three years ago)

He reaches for liquid-covered firm Dutch things? Intriguing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:55 (twenty-three years ago)

He reaches for liquid-covered firm Dutch things? Intriguing.

Jay-Z in Urban Dance Squad gay tryst shocker!!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Foamy ones. Ones called "Heinies." DO! YOU! SEE! Must I belabor it? Oh God yes!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:57 (twenty-three years ago)

wouldn't it be weird if the Grammys were watching YOU? Use this to pretend!

http://www.limpbizkit.com/uploaded_media/Fred%20in%20Wig%20.jpg

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:59 (twenty-three years ago)

You make it sound so good, Mike.

What in the name of god is that, Anthony?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 03:59 (twenty-three years ago)

NORAH JONES SAID "SHIT"! NORAH JONES = PUNK ROCK!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Changing the subject...Norah Jones gets Best New Artist.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Coincedence? READ THE BOOK.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

yay! that means we'll never hear from her again!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

bruce's soul patch is unfortunate.

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Just LOOK at how wide his face is! Fred loves donuts and pie better than Britney. He is insane.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, maybe donuts and pie are actually chewy.

(Why did I say that?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I CAN'T STOP STARING AT THAT FRED DURST PICTURE. Quick, someone post the Hasselsloth so I can think about that instead.

Mike, your interpretation of that Heinekin commercial is genius and one I didn't think of.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Why is everyone singing off-key?

1) Because typical award-show time constraints prevent singers from getting soundchecks.

2) Because it's really difficult to sing and dance at the same time.

3) Because I'm guessing their monitors aren't very loud and when you're standing on a huge stage with a zillion musicians in a room of that size it's impossible to hear yourself sing.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:03 (twenty-three years ago)

sometimes a chocolate starfish is a chocolate starfish.

the grammys are looking at you!

http://www.limpbizkit.com/uploaded_media/fred%20and%20rod%20stewart%281%29.jpg

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I CAN'T STOP STARING AT THAT FRED DURST PICTURE.

I'm counting the seconds until I'm photoshopped into it, I'm afraid.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Do they use auto-tune devices for live performances, by the way?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally, Fred is beckoning you forward. You don't have to love him...or Rod...it's ok...

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

"John Mayer makes me want to kill people, in particular John Mayer."

If I wasn't already happily married, I would marry Ally sight unseen for this post alone. SALUT!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:06 (twenty-three years ago)

4) When someone like Aretha Franklin sings flawlessly, it's because she's a hotheaded diva who gets what she demands come hell or high water, and also she's a consummate professional who's been doing stuff like this for 40 years. Whereas Vanessa Carlton's been doing this for like six months.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:06 (twenty-three years ago)

...and Alex and I could populate the world with a Misfits-loving uberrace!

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Did you just call Ally a slut, Alex?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Here comes the boring industry speech where they demonize Kazaa-users. My secret fantasy is that people in the audience will boo him.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Where can I get a "NEEDLESSLY SLAY YAYO" shirt?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:09 (twenty-three years ago)

That sounds worthy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:10 (twenty-three years ago)

"NEEDLESSLY SLAY YAYO" = and it all comes back to Scarface, like usual.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahaha!! On that tribute to dead people they had Dee Dee Ramone but not the dude from Ratt!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:14 (twenty-three years ago)

They're clearly not about the lumpen realness yo.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Also, I had no idea that Tom Dowd had died.. hm.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Who is that playin' drums during the "Clash tribute"?

Also, no mention of that mook from Drowning Pool. Funny, that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Man, who invited Little Steven onstage for that?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh my extimation of the Joe Strummer tribute just fell when I realized that fuck from No Doubt was taking part.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:16 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe they didn't wanna play a snippet of "Let The Bodies Hit The Floor" during a memoriam sequence.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Clash tribute: there hasn't been so much oversing on one stage since the last VH1 Divas show.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:17 (twenty-three years ago)

what songs did they do?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Just "London Calling."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh my extimation of the Joe Strummer tribute just fell when I realized that fuck from No Doubt was taking part.

Yeah, cuz obviously one reggae-R&B-punk band shouldn't pay tribute to another.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:19 (twenty-three years ago)

They should've done "The Card Cheat" or something else where Bruce wouldn't sound completely fucking weird.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Not ones from a crap reggae-R&B-punk band, no.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:20 (twenty-three years ago)

not "Rock The Casbah" with stars and stripes waving behind them?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Eat your words, Ms. Wonderland.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:20 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh they should do a Ramones tribute next, the Springsteen-Costello-Grohl caravan, and sing Rockaway Beach, and announce loudly how ROckaway Beach is in NY, just like the Grammys! It'd fit with the whole theme of the evening, aka "Let's point out how everyone is from NY or a surrounding state".

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:21 (twenty-three years ago)

where was John Mayer in the Clash trib, man.

Aaron A., Monday, 24 February 2003 04:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Is it me, or did Alicia Keys just completley hog the mic like an ego-crazed homecoming queen when she was up there with Cyndi Lauper?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, if they're gonna do a Ramones or Clash tribute, Andrew WK so needs to be dancing on stage.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Costello could've handled the Clash tribute on his own, and it would've been a more appropriate affair instead of the clusterfuck it turned into.

Grohl as erstwhile Killing Joke sessioneer makes it all okay, tho'.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd still like to see Vanessa Carlton naked, by the way.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Springsteen and Costello should ONLY do Clash songs from now on. Most vital both have been in decades.

Scott Seward, Monday, 24 February 2003 04:24 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe they'll make Spin's top 40!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone actually enjoy the Dixie Chicks?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:24 (twenty-three years ago)

NOT NORAH FUCKING JONES AGAIN

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Norah Jones just won.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I eat nothing! I hate Gwen Stefani! She is a toolbag! She is married to Gavin Rossdale! The fact that the rest of the band cavorts with her says nothing good about them!

I was thinking about how unfortunate it was that Andrew WK was no where to be found earlier, when that Target ad that uses Don'T Stop Living In The Red came on earlier. That was phenomenal. He really should be around more often.

Vanessa Carlton and Michelle Branch are the same person, Alex.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

OH MY GOD SHE'S NOT JAZZ SOMEBODY KILL HER

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Not ones from a crap reggae-R&B-punk band, no.

Actually, that matches the match up perfectly appropriate.

No Andrew WK = a blessing for us all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:26 (twenty-three years ago)

She seems refreshingly normal and embarassed to be there. I'm sure she'll vanish ala Fiona Apple in swift course.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:26 (twenty-three years ago)

It's Norah Jone's year apparently. So it was written in the book of revelations.BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!!

I put "Landslide" on my top ten, I did.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I thought Keys hogged it from Cyndi.

So, did Eminem win anything?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I am going to wash the pain away with corny-ass yet enjoyable '70s library music

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Tonight is the first time I've ever even noticed the existance of Norah Jones, what the hell? I was just thinking she's the new Fiona Apple too, Alex. Except not all pissed off and strung out.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:27 (twenty-three years ago)

He won some free yayo

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait, did she just thank "everyone who performed tonight"? Like it was the Norah Jones Show? Tho I guess she could be forgiven for thinking that...

Jesse Fox, Monday, 24 February 2003 04:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Why were the following people there: that woman from "Sex in the City," Vince Vaugh, Willem Dafoe

OFF TO BED I GO.

G'night all.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Damn, I so wanted Peter Gabriel to grab the mike and launch into "Supper's Ready."

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait a minute...maybe it's a plea to free Gideon YAGO, only he spelt it wrong, see?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:28 (twenty-three years ago)

A mystic message!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I imagined John Mayer pounding on a vending machine in the hallway during the Clash tribute. Thankfully, I didn't make myself imagine the Clash tribute. I wouldn't have minded seeing Norah Jones performing, though. I heard that CD, and thought it was decent.

tom (other), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:29 (twenty-three years ago)

you people do remember that Oh Brother Were Art Thou and Steely Dan won the last two years. Or that Celine Dion beat the Fugees, Beck, Smashing Pumpkins and Waiting To Exhale Soundtrack for the 97 one. Norah's a frikkin' lock, unless the BOSS steals her thunder.

That said, I'dve shit golden nuggets if Nellyville took best album. Just to see him hold up a drink and tell Norah she is fine.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure she'll vanish ala Fiona Apple in swift course.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:30 (twenty-three years ago)

So, did Eminem win anything?

Best Rap Album -- that's when he read off the list of all his MC influences. Probably Masta Ace's first Grammy shout-out.

Jesse Fox, Monday, 24 February 2003 04:30 (twenty-three years ago)

wait is it over now? did she win best album?

Fiona rox!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Taking sides: yayo versus a Grammy. Somehow, I don't think Eminem's crying.

Well, he is, judging by the constant expression on his face, but not over the Grammy.

(Damn, I just got an ew message while typing - dude, Jody, you're all fired up tonight. I don't know about Alex, but I wasn't actually insulting Norah Jones, I know nothing about her besides I found her performance kinda boring - it's just that everyone who wins Best New Artist disappears from the charts immediately)

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Nate - what 70's music do you mean? There's a chance that I might even know it!

tom (other), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope Marc Cohn was walking in Memphis right when they said Norah won.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I was just thinking she's the new Fiona Apple too, Alex. Except not all pissed off and strung out.

I was thinking she's the new Alicia Keys. Anyone remember her?

Jesse Fox, Monday, 24 February 2003 04:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm just bored of her and everything even remotely related to "adult contemporary" (but then I'm an irascible bastid sometimes)

Tom, it's some sort of De Wolfe studios compilation. One of the songs was sampled in The High & Mighty's "Dirty Decibels"!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:34 (twenty-three years ago)

God, as soon as Clive Davis dies NOBODY will remember Keys. *knock on wood*

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Shure won a technical Grammy. that is all i care about. I love sm57s. the small record shop at which i work has sold 700 copies of norah jones' album since last summer as of last week. after tonight, we wont be stocking anything else at all. i didnt watch the grammys. i was cooking. i made soup with bok choy and meatballs made with tofu and turkey, garnished with fried shallots.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I only have one De Wolfe record; it's dramatic string music by Jack Trombey. The arrangements have a great, clear sound that I can't explain very well, mostly because I haven't heard it in a long time. I know that De Wolfe is just a huge company, but I don't know a lot of English composers, and don't know any CD compilations, either. I think I can sort of imagine how it might be corny - it might be a preconception that makes me wary of production music from England. I'm just ignorant, though.

Oh, damn - I can't even imagine the Last Poets profile, and I wish I could see it.

tom (other), Monday, 24 February 2003 04:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris Martin's Yorke impression was hilariously studied. He must have had pie charts and graphs all about Thom's head-wobble and flailing limbs. I thought it was strange how John Leguizamo talked about them, as if they were really out there. But the way the audience reacted to the performance made it seem like they did think it was the weirdest thing they had ever seen. Eh. I was impressed that he stayed in tune, as no one else seemed to be able to.
You know, I find it strange that Coldplay have only been around for the past 3 years and they're playing the Grammys with the NY Phil.
Radiohead have actually been asked *NOT* to play in the past.
Is Chris Martin really that much more palatable to the American public at large than Thom?

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 24 February 2003 05:18 (twenty-three years ago)

You guys clearly had more fun watching this than I did, because I had to report on it for Grammy.com and therefore couldn't do anything fun like doing play-by-play w/y'all on the thread. In the meantime, here are things I wrote down but couldn't include (that I didn't see in the thread):

* BOY are S&G's voices gone. Way to throw an extra guitar lick in there to cover for Artie’s fuckup, Paul.
* Bennett’s intro of Norah Jones (“She’s not good, she’s great! She’s phenomenal! She’s gonna be around a long time, because you the public have sold…bought millions of her records!”) is gonna set the tenor for this whole fucking thing, isn’t it? [note: it did]
* Jones sings “Don’t Know Why” and looks scared as fuck. I notice for the first time that she has a gap between her front teeth; she is now therefore the official hottest woman on earth.
* Kylie & Justin is the pop summit of my and Battaglia's dreams, but some acutal decent chemistry undermined by the stupid scripted “Can I grab your ass again” joke.
* Norah wins Best Pop Vocal Album and, um, I want to eat her for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
* Vanessa Carlton cutting into Paul Shafer’s intro may be the most endearing thing she will ever do. (In a way it's too bad--he's the best pseudo-host so far.)
* Carlton into John Mayer into James Taylor. What fucking decade is this, anyway? Somebody watched those late-night commercials for Time-Life’s Singers & Songwriters comps a few times too often....
* Way to hoot at John "Your Body Is a Wonderland" Mayer, P. Diddy. Are you maybe jealous you didn't think up that supersmooth pickup line yourself, hmmm?
* I like how Natalie Maines looks like Belinda Carlisle c. 1987. Or maybe that’s just the hair.
* Raphael Saadiq looks like a million dollars.
* John Leguizamo misidentifies clarinetist Glenn Miller as a trombone player
* Hey, Chris Martin: they're just piano chords. Sit up straight.
* Robin Williams put the prize’s gramophone up to his ear, and said, “Listen, you can hear careers ending.” Like yours, I hope.
* How much did they pay Avril’s “moshpit”?
* Best moment of Nelly & Kelly: when Nelly starts punching air instinctively when “Hot in Herre” starts up again, and they both give up even trying to lip-synch to the song(s).
* Fred Durst invents the word “agreeance"
* Unidentified black man in purple suit after Grohl's Foo Fighters Best Hard Rock Performance speech: “Rock would not be anything without B.B. King.” Grohl: “I was just going to say that!”
* Robin Williams mic hum outwits his comedy. Whatta surprise
* I am very proud that I didn't mention Broooce at all in my piece
* Erykah Badu should stop reading her own press and/or going on awards shows. Actually, scratch that. Erykah Badu should read every inch of her press on go on every awards show.
* Love that audibly too-fast backing tape Ed Bradley talks over during the Bee Gees segment. “Tragedy” sounds like ‘ardkore. (Rave on! Feel the voib!)

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 24 February 2003 05:20 (twenty-three years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 24 February 2003 06:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Matos generally OTM but the best (read "over the top") moment was towards the end of the Nelly & Kelly duet when the Fly GIrls from "Hot in Herrre" popped their heads out of holes in the stage to sing a last chorus of "Hot in Here" in the final mix-down only to have Nelly resolve the "Dilemna" by continuing up the stairs with Kelly "Rowr"land into the plexi pyramid. Hooray! Love has triumphed. I laughed my head off.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 24 February 2003 06:23 (twenty-three years ago)

there was so much going on during that performance, and I was so tired already from taking notes, that I couldn't write it all down. you said it as well as I could. (yeah, I noticed that too, Jess, haha)

Hell, I own Tidal (though not its follow-up). Believe me, when I choose to insult Fiona Apple.... you'll know it!

My comment was more an observation on the ridiculous cycle of all things Grammy.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Good list Matos but Glenn Miller played the trombone.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 24 February 2003 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow this thread is a million times more entertaining than the actual show. I flipped over three times to see... 1) that stupid John Mayer wowing the audience with his guitar playing 2) that stupid John Mayer winning an award and 3) Robin Williams' mic buzzing.

Seriously though, if you could pin down everything that's wrong with the U.S. music industry, I think this might be a good place to start. Not that this is a "new" idea, mind you.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 24 February 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a thread goin' on ILE about Norah Jones being "not that good," etc. Look, the Grammys are utterly *WITHOUT MEANING* , so getting all upset about them is a waste of time. I mean, if you rely on the Grammys to inform you on who you should listen to or whose discs you should rush out and buy or whom you should champion at cocktail parties when someone asks you what sort've music you like, you clearly don't take music very seriously. So Norah won a pile of glorified bowling trophies....big deal.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 14:19 (twenty-three years ago)

so, then, how long till the editorials come out saying "this was a triumph for REAL music, none of that rap or teenpop crap"?

It's probably already happened. Check to see whatever Hilburn dribbled about it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Wanna get sick? Try watching Fox News and CNN, and listen to whistleheads like Paula Zahn, Jack Cafferty and Bill Hemmer unsolicitedly wax rhapsodic on their opinions of last night's proceedings. If Hemmer glowers at the camera one more time saying "the Boss was ROBBED!", I'm going to go buy a big bag of smack during lunch and off myself.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean is Norah Jones using the fact that she appears to not know what she's doing as a canny career move--"self-effacing"? Her stuff is the revenge of the 1970s, it's really incredible--what is that song, some kind of Randy Newman rip? What is John Mayer, Michael Hedges for arthritics, Nick Drake for crypto-jazzbos?

The real-music thing has started, reference to NJ's ab-lum being done live in NY Times today...Arif Mardin on NPR saying that he would've been laffed out of the office had he brought Norah to them 2 years ago, now they scouring the woods for more ingenues just like her.

I thought Faith Hill was good, though, they always are so professional down in Nashville, they all can sing, and that counts for a lot in on a show like that. I was also very amused by the Dixie Chix, they all look like waitresses at Chili's or the Cracker Barrel, and while I can't listen to their shit, they themselves seem somehow real, although that's probably just me being taken in. Robin Gibb's weeve was good, I always liked the way he'd stand there with his finger stuck in his cheek like Bette Davis.

Why is everyone singing off-key?

Because pitch correction software is probably found under the "industry standard production value" clause on most major label contracts, me thinks. Strange what a little goop can do to a live performance.

I loved how London Calling was turned into a union-jack-flying, airplanes-roaring, bomb-dropping anthem. The most unintentional anti-war, dogmatic statement of the night. Thee irony actually oozed from out mine speaker cabinetry.

The ice age is coming, the sun is zooming in
Engines stop running and the wheat is growing thin
A nuclear error, but I have no fear
London is drowning-and I live by the river

david day (winslow), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

david day: I don't follow. Are you saying that you think they were trying to make "London Calling" into a pro-war statement? If so, I guess I disagree a lot. I don't think it was anti-war either. I think they were just all trying to be Intense! and Clashlike! Especially Springsteen, famously dismissed by Strummer for being (Lester Bangs' phrase) "a myth-addled softie."

Evidence please. Unless I missed the point of your post, in which case education please.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:27 (twenty-three years ago)

So who invited funny-guy Dave Grohl to the Strummer flogging?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Much in the way "Keep On Rockin' (In The Free World)" is misconstrued as a pro-America song, "London Calling" was presented as this kind of pro-UK song, with old war planes and fluttering union jacks circling on the screens behind them.

Perhaps I'm mistaken [and the UK contingent of ILM will flay me], but isn't "London Calling" a biting condemnation of "London"? A kind of spitting, sarcastic number?

I'm a big fan of London as a city, but mr. Strummer was trying to make a point, yes? I wouldn't say it was a "pro-war" song precisely [the war planes were a bid odd], but they certainly morphed the meaning of the song with that presentation...

david day (winslow), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay. I guess I forgot to look at the backdrop, as I was transfixed by the contrasting hairstyles and earnestness of everyone involved. But I'm pretty sure that everyone involved in the thing is against war in general and this upcoming inevitable tragic bloodbath in particular. So what the (confusing) fuck?

fucking hell Matos - were you peaking at Jon Pareles' laptop?

what do you mean by this, James?

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Two important things that no one has discussed:

- Nelly's backup dancer who FELL ON HER ASS in the middle of "Hot In Herre" and ended up sprawled across the steps of Kelly's cyber-kiosk.

- ARETHA FRANKLIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

James Blount, Monday, 24 February 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Art Garfunkel's white boy fro' is still great as ever. I don't know, I liked their performance. Why is Paul Simon such an ass?

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Hilburn speaks. What a surprise, too. "BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE...oh yeah, Eminem so I can seem hip and Jones so I can get into her pants."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

PEOPLE! Aretha Franklin does the world's best imitation of the Stay-Puft Marshmallow man and no one has anything to say????

I also can't believe that Joei and I are the only ones who say that dancer fall. And the NSync performance showed two things:

1. Justin Timberlake sucks ass.
2. Chris Kirkpatrick kicks ass.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Addendum to the NSync again:

ATTENTION NSYNC: Fire Lance and hire me!!!!!!!! I'll put up with Justin, promise.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

"What does Robert Hilburn know about rock and roll?"

The Negro Problem, "Birdcage."

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I just read Slate's roundup - did James Taylor actually perform "Sweet Baby James"? What the fuck was this - a DNC fundraiser?

James Blount, Monday, 24 February 2003 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I still say he made a better album than any of the A-O-T-Y nominees. (it's better than that statement, though, obv.)

fave Hilburn comment so far: "There are those who have maintained for years that the Grammys are no more significant than American Idol...." [emphasis mine] Yeah, because American Idol has been on the air for an entire year!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

That picture is awe-inspiring.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

more Hilburn: "Eminem's rendition of 'Lose Yourself,' a song that urges young people to reach for their dreams, was one of the night's highlights -- with the Detroit rapper backed live by the Roots hip-hop band." yes! "the Roots hip-hop band!"

"His failure to win album of the year honors for The Eminem Show was the evening's most serious misjudgment." b-b-b-but what about "tasteful and gently understated" Norah Jones?!?!?

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

"For all the talk about honoring excellence, the Grammy Awards are one big sales-op for the record industry--a chance to generate enough buzz on artists to get consumers to actually buy their CDs." shocker!

Do you understand why I've moved beyond hate with him and just regard him as a old pathetic dog who pees everywhere?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

From the NYT:
"Politik," the song by Coldplay (which won best alternative album and best rock performance by a duo or group), pointedly included the lines, "Give me peace of mind and trust/Don't forget the rest of us."

How do you pointedly include those lines? How do you do anything pointedly at all with them?

Jesse Fox, Monday, 24 February 2003 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

As pointed and sharp as a big sloppy enchilada.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

It seems like all the platinum-selling rappers have The Roots on speed-dial just in case they have a live performance coming up and they actually want to RAWK.

One of these days The Roots will get to perform on one of these awards shows as The Roots. I hope.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 24 February 2003 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

That would be cool, but I like the idea of them insinuating themselves into the fabric of the music industry until you can't turn around without bumping into them.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 February 2003 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

The Roots : "chart rap" :: The Funk Brothers : Motown?

Shankar Thrilled With Jones' Grammy Wins

By NEELESH MISRA, Associated Press Writer

NEW DELHI, India - While Norah Jones' music is little known in most of India, her sweep at the Grammys brought a wave of pride and cheer to a home in southern New Delhi, where her father sat watching the awards ceremony.

Jones is the daughter of Ravi Shankar, the 82-year-old sitarist who's India's best known musician.

david day (winslow), Monday, 24 February 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

No talk of Coldplay's drummer? He was like a three-year-old Meg White!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 24 February 2003 23:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Jones is the daughter of Ravi Shankar, the 82-year-old sitarist who's India's best known musician.

Norah Jones, meanwhile, is 23. YOU GO RAVI!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 00:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I was hoping for another harangue like last year's from the RIAA about how file-swapping is killing the industry... it just wasn't the same without the arrogant self-serving propaganda!

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Especially Springsteen, famously dismissed by Strummer for being (Lester Bangs' phrase) "a myth-addled softie."

The Clash were very wary of Elvis Costello, too, and moderatley miffed at Mick Jones when he colaborated with Elvi. At any rate, a quick listen to "Stay Free" and "Gates Of The West" shows how near Springsteen and the clash were in spirit, whether Strummer wanted to admit it or not.

On another note, I find it very hard to believe that Bruce "Nebraska" Springsteen and Elvis "Pills & Soap" Costello were trying to turn "London Calling" into a rah-rah USUK anthem.

Haha, Lester Bangs had some nerve to call anyone a "myth addled softie" (certainly the biggest part of Lester's appeal?)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

jeez, am im i the first britisher on this thread? the grammy's seem so much more exciting than the brits don't they?

"They were thinking "oh no he'll drop Ja Rule off a balcony" ". this made me lol.

michael wells (michael w.), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 01:40 (twenty-three years ago)

If Hemmer glowers at the camera one more time saying "the Boss was ROBBED!", I'm going to go buy a big bag of smack during lunch and off myself.

all he has to do is open his mouth for me to do the same.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 03:32 (twenty-three years ago)

* Fred Durst invents the word “agreeance"

I almost died when I heard this on the radio.

But shocker - Fred was right!

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 2 March 2003 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

As I think I said to Anthony once regarding Mr. Durst, even a blind, deaf and mute monkey with irreparable brain damage occasionally stumbles and falls onto a banana.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 2 March 2003 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

And as I said to Ned about Fred Durst, that man is wiser than then we could ever conceive.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 2 March 2003 23:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually have several people to tell that agreeance is a word. I am ashamed for making fun of his use of "Agreeance" and will never doubt Fred again.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 2 March 2003 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

that man is wiser than then we could ever conceive

And since I cannot conceive, being male, that statement sounds like one we can both agree on in our own ways.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 2 March 2003 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Alas, Mr. Miccio, you have confused real life with the movies. The little green man in the robe you have been talking to is not your Jedi mentor, but the disreputable superintendent of your building wondering 'where the hell's my rent, you sunovabitch?'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 March 2003 00:14 (twenty-three years ago)

don't talk about my mom that way! She IS my Jedi Mentor!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 3 March 2003 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

though judging by this banter, Fred is smarter than anything WE could conceive.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 3 March 2003 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)
