When I first heard Boy George (Do you really wanna hurt me ?) I thought it was a woman singing.
and I thought Anastasia was black.
Anybody else have similar experiences ?

kevin brady (groeuvre), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 08:01 (twenty-three years ago)

When I first heard Andy Bell I didn't just think he was a she, I thought he was Allison Moyet. (I think this mistake hinges on the particular early-ish track I heard, but I don't remember which one it was.)

Also, I thought Rick Astley was butch.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 08:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Thought Aesop Rock was black. But then again, had taken pains to make me think that.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 08:15 (twenty-three years ago)

should read "he had taken pains"

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 08:15 (twenty-three years ago)

i used to think f.r. david was a woman. and i remember hearing my mum say that she thought one of the guys from air supply was a woman too...

cecilia, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought Luke Haines was Giorgio Moroder. Does that count?

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 13:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay so I thought Luke Haines was Italian -- that definitely counts then.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

i thought Spike Jonze was black initially but then so did a lot of people

i remember hearing Rick Astley for the first time and assuming he was a Luther Vandross typa guy, that was a real eye-opener

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought Savage Garden was Roxette.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to think Michael Jackson was a black male.

Sorry, someone had to say it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

That took ages...;-)

kevin brady (groeuvre), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to think REM were a rock band..

kevin brady (groeuvre), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I actually referred to the singer of Smart Went Crazy as having a typical white guy indie rock voice before realizing that he is in fact black.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I never realised Russel Mael wasn't a German woman, which is presumably the point.

Ferg (Ferg), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Between the ages of 9 and 12 I thought Tom Waits was a black dude.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I knew there was someone else, Tom Waits.
Even the name sounds black.

kevin brady (groeuvre), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I knew Spike Jonze wasn't black, because he used to have a column in Freestylin' magazine in the mid 80's when he was about 13 or so.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom is one of the blackest names out there. Tom Selleck, Tom Hanks, Tom Smothers, all people we should be celebrating in these few remaining days of Black History Month

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't forget Uncle Tom.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:18 (twenty-three years ago)

My b/f just made the Rick Astley discovery for himself. It was a beautiful thing to see.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Me at 15: Oh, Jimi Hendrix is black?

I've said it before I'll say it again, my friends from NB were blown away by Dave the former guitarist in Mean Red Spiders when one of them uttered "He's like the black Jimi Hendrix man."

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i did think Eminem was black on first HEARING 'My Name Is...' single, then i saw and the video and the hills were alive with the sound of 'blimey'

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Eddie Holman-"Hey There Lonely Girl". I found this song very confusing when I was a kid, as it's clearly written from the point of view of a guy. All those soul falsetto guys in the late 60s and early 70s confused me: the Stylistics, the Chi-Lites, Blue Magic.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Before I realized it was Material Issue, I thought the song "Kim the Waitress" was a lesbian anthem sung by a husky-voiced woman.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

That's funny, upon the first time his voice hit my ears I knew Em was the honkiest honky to ever honk.

Ugly Ducklings, on the other hand, I had to go see in concert before I found out they were crackaz.

And Dave Fuczinski (however you spell it), the guitarist from Screaming Headless Torsoes...totally black, to my surprise.

The dude from Sigur Ros? I was certain he was a little girl for at least the first two entire spins of Agaetis Birjun.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to think Mick Hucknal circa "Holding Back the Years" was Carly Simon.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread is both extremely fun and interesting and very potentially volatile.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

My wife thought Insane Clown Posse was black. (She also thought B Real from Cypress Hill was black.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Bukka White is black

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Insane Clown Posse might not be black, but I don't like to think of them as white either; just 'cause I don't want to have even that much in common with them.

I still can't tell about Tom Morello. What's up with his ethnicity? Anyone know?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

What about Mariah Carey? Isn't she from Manitoba? Or is that Paula Abdul?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Morello sounds Spanish/Italian - i'm guessing Tom has Latin roots

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, I'm curious...how "white" are people of Lebanese descent generally considered?

Some examples of partially-Lebanese folks: Salma Hayek, Shakira, Shannon Elizabeth, Ralph Nader, Dick Dale, nickalicious, Frank Zappa...is it generally only when mixed with other non-white ethnicities (such as Salma Hayek or Shakira, both Lebanese-Latin hybrids of the highest caliber...YOWZA!), or does it apply to the basically-a-honky Lebanese mutts like Nader or myself?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Tracy Chapman was tough on the first couple-a-spins.

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Cher is Lebanese right? but always considered white...

also, whats with the dudes from System Of A Down - i've heard the singer's from the Lebanon but also from Albania - clarify?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Serj is of Armenian decent, but he was born & spent the first part of his life in a refugee camp in Beirut.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought the eerie falsetto bridge in Harry Chapin's "Taxi" was sung by some foxy LA session girl. I was shocked when he played American Bandstand and it turned out the lines were sung by his bass player, a burly, bearded hippy in overalls.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I always thought Arthur Lee was white.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I knew reading all those bullshit guitar magazines as a teen would pay off: Tom Morello is half black, half white (I think his mom is black and his dad was white).

Nick A. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Close -- dad's black, etc.

All of System of a Down are Armenian-American. Glendale represent, and all that.

Cher's background is Armenian-American as well, I believe.

Terminator X's mom is German.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

When I first heard Little Jimmy Scott, I was sure he was a woman. D'oh!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I loved all the reviews of albums by the Negro Problem that talk about how the group's name was "offensive" and unacceptable, even though there's a black guy in the group. Thing is, the black guy is Stew, the band's leader and only enduring member. Maybe they were all thrown off because TNP do power-pop...because we know it "musta been a white guy."

Speaking of which, I was never fooled a bit by Third Bass, because I saw the "Gas Face" video before I heard the song. But I know some radio-lovin' friends who were snookered on that one.

Anastacia sounds black, as well, although I saw
her before I heard her. Dang, she has a good
voice. Too bad her material is shite.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I SWORE that guy from Mr. Big was a woman when I saw the "To Be With You" video. I even made a bet with my sister on it (trying to intimidate her, I swore I saw another video where the singer was wearing a tight vinyl jumpsuit and BLATANTLY had breasts - total lie, and I was way wrong).

Also, I thought Rick Astley was butch.
The first time I heard Rick Astley, I thought "What? Did Billy Ocean get a new producer? The mix must be flat or something...he sounds 'off' somehow."
Then I saw the skinny little white guy singing on MTV...

" And Dave Fuczinski (however you spell it), the guitarist from Screaming Headless Torsoes...totally black, to my surprise. "

now i'm confused.
the double-neck guitar sportin' David Fiuczynski that i was occasionally staring at -- from the radio booth, doing a live broadcast from a jazz fest in 2000, where D.F. was perfroming with Victor Bailey's group (and wadda a shite group, except for most of Kenny Garrett's contribution) -- well, that guitar man was anything but black...

but he's not, totally. He's got like really white skin but really "black" features.

Dan I., Thursday, 27 February 2003 07:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, shit, maybe I've got him (Fiuczynski) confused with someone else altogether.

Once I played Fishbone for my uncle, and about three-quarters-way through the album (it was Truth and Soul) he saw the album cover and was like "No way! These dudes are black?" and I'm like "Have you been listening? Did you miss that song that went 'when you're a fly in the buttermilk, they chase ya all through the night'!?!"

Prediction: This thread will soon turn into a discussion of "what is white anyway?" Which is a good question.

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Friday, 5 March 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Final, definitive word on Frank Zappa's heritage: "My ancestry is Sicilian, Greek, Arabic and French."

Oh, yeah: First few times I heard "Old Time Rock And Roll" I thought Bob Seger was black. Hard to believe there was ever a "first time" for hearing that song - one of the most tiresomely over-played ever. In fact, it's hard to recall a time when it wasn't associated with the nauseating sight of Tom Cruise dancing in his underwear. But I'm getting off the subject...

Myonga Von Bontee, Friday, 5 March 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

that new girl in Shalamar, she's fine

I know most of this thread is going on voice, but the first time I saw Brother Ali at First Ave I was standing way in the back and thought "OK, burly bald white dude with formidable mic skills. Yay, Mpls has a Bubba Sparxxx!" Then I found out he's an albino African-American.

Hell yeah, Nina Simone does reach into some pretty manly registers at times.

Some time in about 1988 I was under the impression the Pixies had one female singer with a very strange voice. I guess I only heard "Gigantic" and a bunch of Black Francis' shriekier moments before I saw a photo. Boy was my face red!

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I was sure Attica Blues by Archie Shepp was sung by a woman. Well the back-up vox are ladies but I only found out the lead voice is a guy when I read the liner notes. I'm not the only one to think this, there's published reviews referencing the soulful lead lady vocals.

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

When I first heard "Numb," I thought Beth Gibbons was black because of a mix up with Morcheeba and her Billie Hollidayisms way back when. I thought Scott Herren was black.

Hanson totally own, though.

Leee the Whiney (Leee), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Scott Herren was black.
So did I, if only because reviews I read in passing for the first album talked so much about hip-hop, and my familiarity with the name Gil Scott Heron, who is not white.

I still don't know if Pat Place is a man or woman. The photos I've seen make him/her look very androgynous.

Also, I know Dave Brubeck is white, but I've never seen photos of the backing band. Are Paul Desmond and the rest of the group black or white?

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Saturday, 6 March 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul Desmond was white, dunno about the rest of the band

Also, I know Dave Brubeck is white, but I've never seen photos of the backing band. Are Paul Desmond and the rest of the group black or white?

Paul Desmond is white. If you're talking about Brubeck's group circa "Time Out", the bassist Eugene Wright is black and the drummer Joe Morello is white. The latter has the same last name as that Rage Against the Machine guitarist, don't know if they're related.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 6 March 2004 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and here are my misconceptions:

When I first heard "Son of a Preacher Man", I thought Dusty Springfield was black.

Before I found out her name, I thought Tanita Tikaram was a man. And I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one.

I thought Company Flow was all-white, because they sounded like that.

When I first heard Slug, the Athmosphere rapper, featuring on an All Natural track, I thought he was black. Then I bought an Athmosphere LP, and changed my mind, I thought this dude has to be white. However, according to AMG he's mulatto.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 6 March 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not even going to say how old I was when I finally determined Tracy Chapman's gender.

The first time I heard "Californication" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers I thought, "Oh, Tracy Chapman's got a comeback single!" Which is a nice yin to the yang of my -- and a lotta people's -- first Tracy Chapman exposure.

I remember watching the video for "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off", trying to figure out if he was a man or a woman.

I also thought Boy George was a woman the first time I heard "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me," except in my case, I was watching the video. So I thought he was a particularly homely woman.

I may be dreaming, but I seem to remember some review of "Sign O the Times" where the reviewer didn't realize that Camille was Prince sped-up.

When I first heard Andy Bell I didn't just think he was a she, I thought he was Allison Moyet. (I think this mistake hinges on the particular early-ish track I heard, but I don't remember which one it was.)

I did too. On the other hand, I first thought that Alison Moyet was a guy, so go figure... :)

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 09:12 (seventeen years ago)

The first time I heard Michael Jackson was "The Girl Is Mine", whose lyrics kind of made it obvious that he must indeed have been a guy. But I still found it a bit puzzling.. I mean, he just couldn't be...?

Listening to the "Grafitti Bridge" soundtrack by Prince I also thought this Tevin Campbell must be a girl. Of course, mixing him up was a bit more logical as, at 14, he did indeed sound like a woman although it wouldn't last. :)

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

When I heard Milli Vanilli's "Girl I'm gonna miss you" I thought it was a girl.

I would have seen this video in 1984, and apparently I thought it was more likely that a man would perform in a dress (and, um, have breasts) than that a woman would be "allowed" to sing a song about another woman being her "gal".

Haha I think I heard it that way until I read otherwise at 13 or so. It was a little disappointing; I'd been really impressed by how he could just flip into such a pure tone in that register. Conversely, my friend asked "who's the babe?" when Peter Hamill switched to his pure falsetto voice on "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" (ironically, first on the line "I am a lonely man").
