This is the thread where you can freely proclaim your love for arists actively hated-on by ILM.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

there'll be tears before bedtime.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I probably OWNZ dis, as a huge fan of Les Claypool, Sigur Ros, Phish, the Peter Gabriel-era Genesis, not to mention BECK, who I seem to be the only person up in here that's professed a likin' for.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I LIEK PENNYWISE@!#!##!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:36 (twenty-three years ago)

can we proclaim that we don't think said artists are that bad?

If so, I don't think Sigur Ros or Norah Jones are horrible. I kinda liked Beck's last album too (note: i really don't care if there are people who do what he did on Sea Change better...does my appreciation of Zion Canyon diminish because Grand Canyou exists? no, no it doesn't)

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Not that i've heard much strife -- but can dig on some early Harry Connick Jr..

christoff (christoff), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Beck. Also like The Clash, Billy Bragg, Groove Armada, Blues Explosion, J5, Smashing Pumpkins, Oasis (the 1st two albums anyway), R.E.M., Sebadoh, Tortoise, The Strokes...

Michael B, Friday, 28 February 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Not that i've heard much strife -- but can dig on some early Harry Connick Jr..

I own an instrumental piano-jazz trio rekkid of his, and you should see people's expressions when they find it on my CD-shelf. Like "WTF?" to the power of ten.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I like some Tortoise stuff, some Clash stuff, some Pumpkins, and most J5 stuff

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i gotchas all beat. i like Frank Zappa!

(i also like Beck, the Clash, Tortoise, (pre-Green) REM, J5. but i absolutely loathe Sigur Ros, Phish, the Strokes, and Sebadoh. so there you are.)

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, can anyone who likes these maligned bands see why others think they're awful. I, for one, can.

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I like some Zappa stuff too!...only heard "Cheap thrills" and "...only in it for the money"

Michael B, Friday, 28 February 2003 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

what i'm waiting for are the ILXors in the closet about their love of Coldplay, Travis, or Creed!

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

... i occasionly get the same thing for my Sade.

christoff (christoff), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, can anyone who likes these maligned bands see why others think they're awful. I, for one, can.

Sure, definitely. But I can also see just as many reasons why ILM's "sacred cow" artists are just as worthy to be hated on.

Every muso, every band have at least one or two things that make them god-awful unbearable to SOMEONE out there. It just seems like no one's willing to accept that there are just as many reasons someone like, say, Radiohead or Bob Dylan or Jay-Z, who kinda occupy a "sacred cow" status up in here, deserve to be hated-on just as much as Primus or Ani DiFranco or Anticon or whoever.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Avril, Shakira, Vanessa Carlton and Bon Jovi all rule!!!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually kinda like Shakira's Spanish-language stuff. Maybe it's 'cause I have no idea what she's saying.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I like music.
I also read NME, Mojo & The Wire.

Bill Brown, Friday, 28 February 2003 19:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Plenty of people around here hate on Radiohead. Haven't seen so much Jay-Z hate, but you could add me to the list if one was ever formulated.

hstencil, Friday, 28 February 2003 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

nickalicious:
maybe cuz you're imagining her booty shaking hypnotically

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think Coldplay are bad, I just can't really find anything distinct about them to warrant anyone remembering them for any reason.

Some more groups/artists I like a lot that will diminish my ILM-coolness-ratio (that was already pretty non-existant to begin with):

Rusted Root, Rage Against the Machine, Doseone, Ben Folds Five, Cake, Lyrics Born, Suicidal Tendencies, Cibo Matto (as well as *gasp* side projects!) and Wyclef Jean.

Some more groups/artists that are generally considered the creme-de-la-creme by most of ILM that I don't like whatsoever:

Missy Elliot, Sex Pistols, Fischerspooner, Jay-Z, The Pixies, and XTC.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe cuz you're imagining her booty shaking hypnotically

But I can do that to Kool Keith's Sex Style and forego her music. I actually enjoyed her music! SELF-SHOCKAH!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't like the Pixies either.

hstencil, Friday, 28 February 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Coldplay, Elbow, Sigur Ros, Kings of Convenience, America

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I have everyone beat:

INSANE CLOWN POSSE

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:16 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah you do.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins, Jazzanova (and a whole lot of dinner party type music)...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry dan, you suck :)

I dont care if they are from Michigan, they embarass us to no end!

Mike Taylor (mjt), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps that's why he likes them. Dan hates Michigan!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

But that's part of why they're so great! Utterly shameless inanity dressed up int he guise of an evil murdering circus = CLASSIC! (The newer stuff kind of sucks dog balls, though.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)

The correct word is 'teabags'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i didnt know some of these bands were uncool or hated. i thought ned and others made ilm safe for billy corgan fans worldwide.
i cant honestly think about anything to be embarrassed about. except U2. I like U2.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i thought ned and others made ilm safe for billy corgan fans worldwide.

Sometimes Dan and I and others fight a rough battle, but the defense is standing and remains open. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Elliott Smith. Everything up to and not including Figure 8 is really good. "coming up roses" "ballad of big nothing" "angeles" etc

Aaron A., Friday, 28 February 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i thought i had everyone beat w/ my zappa-love. but not even zappa-love can trump insane clown posse-love. i bow down to mr. perry.

(i also like Smashing Pumpkins -- or at least the pre-billy-goes-skinhead stuff.)

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Who doesn't like Zappa? pricks.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not very fond of Zappa? pricks. Oh, that was two sentences, my bad.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

it seems ICP have made an impression on the west coast. i really dislike them only because they're vandals

(actually that's not the only reason......)

(pic taken from my window)

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Bob Marley. I never hear him mentioned here. I like him.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Smashing Pumpkins are great.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Bob Marley is actively hated on ILM? I will not stand for this

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

not sure if he is hated, just never seen him mentioned.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Marley references on ILM

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

plus, a couple of weeks ago I started a OPO:Wailers thread

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

There've been a few emotionally disturbed times in my life when I've liked James Taylor. Those times have passed, but I have this lingering affection for some of the man's music. I feel better now.

I still love Tortoise's "TNT" too.

Jess Hill (jesshill), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

do we hate tortoise here? i didnt know that either. "glass museum" on ...millions now living... is such a magical track. i would use the adjective shimmering if i didnt know that the use of that adjective would serve to lower the regard at which tortoise fans are held arounf here|

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Oasis and the Cranberries.

s woods, Friday, 28 February 2003 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I've really loved Yoko Ono since I was 16. I haven't met anyone "in the flesh" who would admit to liking her, but I think there are a few ILMers who might. Other than that, I used to really like the Divine Comedy too. But not so much anymore (I woke up one day, and couldn't play a DC record.)

Alexis, Friday, 28 February 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Laaasst Christmas...

Scott Warner (thream), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:59 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh that reminds me!
"Careless Whispers" is one of my favorite pop trax of all time.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Holy shit, did I really just realize JUST NOW that I spelled it "arists"!?! D'oh!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there really Wham!/George Michael hate here?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't realize it was uncool to like Ben Folds Five or the Suicidal Tendencies.

Man, on the coolness scale, I must be ten miles below ground.

Others: The Smashing Pumpkins, a little Travis, The Barenaked Fucking Ladies.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think so, Dan.

In fact, a lot of these groups (even ones I mentioned) aren't really particularly hated-on or nothing. In fact, as this thread was a knee-jerk reaction on my part to the proclamation of Claypool or Flea or other white-boy funk's lameness on the State of Hiphop thread (as a practioner of said lame funkless funk).

About the same time you posted your question, I was regretting starting this thread in the first place. Ha ha I suck!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

D'oh! I no type guud 2-DAY.

Second sentence above should begin "In fact, this thread was..." No "as". No "ass" either.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think I love anyone who's actively hated on by ILM in a big way.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

also add BDP and Ben Folds Five to my list

Michael B, Friday, 28 February 2003 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

well.. i listen to primus.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to be a HUGE Primus booster; I don't listen to them now but I still like them.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

the Clash, R.E.M.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Queen, even their Highlander song.

cprek (cprek), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:44 (twenty-three years ago)

are Queen hated by ILM? if so add to my list. I can think of at least five songs Sting sings on I like.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I really like three of Common's albums. That might be scarier to most of you than Dan's liking Insane Cl--no, probably not. But close, anyway. But all y'all are crazee. Common roxx u r etc.

Neudonym, Friday, 28 February 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I enjoy Like A Tim.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I like about 1/2 of Common's material, and it's not separated from album-to-album; as many songs as there are on each album I like, there are that many that bug the fuck out of me. Mostly his lyrical back-n-forth between "above-that" shit and "practicing-the-shit-I-said-I-was-above-in-the-last-song" shit is what irks me.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked Common alot when he was Common Sense

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I can do this freely ANYWHERE (and do, though I'm hoping to find an unpopular dance group to support so that Chuck will stop breaking into LL's "You Can't Dance" every time I disagree with him), so this thread is NOTHING to me! Haha!

If only I had a picture of Good Charlotte and Fred Durst TOGETHER. But I don't.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I really liked that one jars of clay song that was a big hit

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

The Frank and Walters!

oh and Alanis is okay too.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Jazz fusion is one of the best genres, and the smoother it gets and more brassed-out keyboard sounds used the better it is!

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

And anything with those midi windcontrollers is almost instantly classic.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Doesn't this thread sort of negate itself?

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

That epic sound of U2, Creed, Coldplay or similar bands really makes for some good listening.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm also impressed by Bono's use of his fame to benefit the people in Africa.

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I really, really like !Godspeed! !You! !Black! !Emperor!

He wooks so CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE! *pinches El-P's cheeks*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 March 2003 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

the instrumental version of the El-P album is great!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 1 March 2003 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But you don't get to hear him yell "McFlyyyy!"

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 1 March 2003 01:02 (twenty-three years ago)

heh, if it's any consolation I actually thought Fantastic Damage would place higher than Original Pirate Material in the Pazz & Jopp

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 1 March 2003 01:05 (twenty-three years ago)

i dont even know where to start

chaki (chaki), Saturday, 1 March 2003 01:17 (twenty-three years ago)

nb - I can't really listen to the regular version...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 1 March 2003 01:37 (twenty-three years ago)

There is no way that Dylan could be considered a Holy Cow around here.

Also, Avril Lavigne has at least as many lovers here as she does hatas; probably more. It's just that her haters are very vocal, but then, so are her defenders. I mean, mark s, Nabisco, jel, Jody Beth Rosen and Ned like her, how hated can she be?

I didn't realize it was uncool to like Ben Folds Five or the Suicidal Tendencies.

Man, on the coolness scale, I must be ten miles below ground.

ILM Cool != "Cool" (meaning most hipsters are totally ok with Suicidal Tendencies, it's just these degenerate Merzbow/Aguilera lovers here that are so damn picky)

My own list: U2 have made an enormous amount of great music which I listen to on a regular basis, but I don't like them. I do love Dylan, Van Morrison, The Jam, Pearl Jam, The Divine Comedy, Blur AND Gorillaz (and Damon Is Dreamy, you awful hatas), R.E.M. and The Clash (who seem to be the best loved "hated" band around here.)

Oh, and

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:00 (twenty-three years ago)

SEMISONIC has a 20th Century Masters collection now? Wow. (Note: this is not a horrified 'wow'.)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:03 (twenty-three years ago)

i didn't realise half of these artists were hated on ILM...
anyways...beachwood sparks

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:34 (twenty-three years ago)

"Closing Time" like the last great alt-radio classic.

Add Van Morrison to my list, bigtime

I like alot of U2 but can understand where detractors are coming from

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i like some U2.

i like that "chemistry" song by semisonic, also.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:47 (twenty-three years ago)

someone told me their cover of "Erotic City" was worth hearing, but I don't know if they meant it was good or not

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:48 (twenty-three years ago)

The Jam,Big Black, U2's "The Unforgettable Fire" (is P.O.D hated on ILM?) and also:

Husker Du ROCK DA HOUSE!!

rex jr., Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Since when is Big Black hated? I mean, Steve Albini yes, but Big Black?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Husker Du are pretty well loved around here; the only outright antagonist I can think of is Tom

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:53 (twenty-three years ago)

There are many 'Mats fans who denigrate the Du as well, but I ignore them.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:54 (twenty-three years ago)

There are many 'Mats fans who denigrate the Du as well

I am not such a variety of 'Mats fan. Just wanted that out there.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 1 March 2003 02:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought "Astral Weeks" was pretty well liked around here.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 1 March 2003 03:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Husker Du are pretty well loved around here; the only outright antagonist I can think of is Tom.

i haven't crossed the line into full-fledged hate re hüsker dü. but they don't much for me anymore so i guess i'm just indifferent. i do prefer the replacements to hüsker dü, i will admit.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 1 March 2003 03:31 (twenty-three years ago)

replacements-husker du echoes stones-beatles so much it aon't funny

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 1 March 2003 03:34 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, yer right. though in my equation, replacements = stones and kinks; and hüsker dü = beatles and who. which explains precisely why i prefer the mats, of course.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 1 March 2003 03:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I have spoken up for Ryan Adams, Bright Eyes, the eels, Travis, and David Gray. ILM will nevah get me to give up my sensitive rockerz.

bnw (bnw), Saturday, 1 March 2003 03:45 (twenty-three years ago)

What I've heard of David Gray is great. His track with Orbital is severely underrated.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 1 March 2003 03:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Turbonegro. That's right, TURBO NEGRO.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 1 March 2003 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Turbonegro is VENERATED around here whenever they're mentioned!

This thread is giving more of an idea of what people's ILM experiences are like than I thought it would.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 1 March 2003 03:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally doesn't like Turbonegro. but i think that she's the only one. i love 'em of course.

i will also confess to liking the Eels -- i didn't know that they were hated around here (though i can see why they would be).

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 1 March 2003 03:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally doesn't like Turbonegro

?!? Did I miss something?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 March 2003 04:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I'm joking, and drunk, and listening to ICP songs that I downloaded, so everything I post tonight is supposed to be (but probably isn't) funny.

Of course everyone loves Turbonegro. Fuck.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 1 March 2003 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Does ILM really hate Van Morrison? Him then and (some) Oasis.

Burr, Saturday, 1 March 2003 05:15 (twenty-three years ago)

You see, TRBNGR not only Hates The Kids, but they also kick everything's ass.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 1 March 2003 05:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Who's been dissing on Van Morrison? Did I miss that, too?

So, yeah, him. Especially "Astral Weeks" and "Veedon Fleece."

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 1 March 2003 05:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I definitely appreciate Van. I quite enjoy Tortoise and Coldplay. I love Smashing Pumpkins, and solidly believe that if Billy had a quality control agent and a restraining order from producing his own albums, they'd be one of the best bands of the last decade.

I can imagine Steely Dan being hated here; I love them. Oh, Sloan too.

derrick (derrick), Saturday, 1 March 2003 06:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I like tortoise.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 1 March 2003 06:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I still wholeheartedly adore the Fixx. Sue me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 March 2003 06:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Astral Weeks, Astral Weeks, a million times Astral Weeks.

And has ILM given any attention to the song "All the Things She Said" ? It's awesome.

Aaron A., Saturday, 1 March 2003 06:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I lust for Nikka Costa. I WIN.

Leee (Leee), Saturday, 1 March 2003 07:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone in this bitch like Diana Krall?

s woods, Saturday, 1 March 2003 07:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I own Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 1 March 2003 07:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm, seems like there's more Van love than I'd thought. Come to think of it, the only hatas I can think of are Tom, mark s and dave q...

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 1 March 2003 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread is giving more of an idea of what people's ILM experiences are like than I thought it would.

Yeah- it's interesting how ppl (myself included) assume that their favourite bands are hated a lot more than they actually are.

It's a bit like whenever I hear people complain about the "indieness" of Nu ILM, but then I look at that top100 list compiled by what is supposedly the "old", Indie-Free ILM, and it's got shit like Belle & Sebastian, Weezer and Neutral Milk Honey, not to mention Manic Street Preachers in the top5!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 1 March 2003 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

We are all NuILM now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 March 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

MC Paul Barman rocks, you are all hetero.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 1 March 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

i adore everything single thing by

Queen

rex jr., Saturday, 1 March 2003 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel like FT/ILM was way more indie-centric when it started out.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 1 March 2003 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't you mean corny indie motherfucker-centric?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 1 March 2003 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I voted for Weezer, and NMH in that poll Daniel! I still would, but I'd also vote for a lot more pop now.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 1 March 2003 18:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Weirdly, I remember voting for a lot of postpunk and no wave.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 1 March 2003 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Are Hum hated around here? What about Iron Maiden? I know there are a few Maiden boosters, but is the general consensus "ick"? I like 'em both quite a bit.

original bgm, Saturday, 1 March 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

no one in their right mind would hate Maiden!

Others arguably dubious/seemingly despised bands/artists I love/like/tolerate/harbour at least a modicum of affection for: Housemartins, Gene, Mansun, Lush, the Wedding Present, The Mission UK, Sisters of Mercy, Alien Sex Fiend, the Cult, Marillion, Rush, Iron Fucking Maiden, The Wonder Stuff, Ned's Atomic Dustbin and, of course......

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 2 March 2003 20:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally doesn't like Turbonegro. but i think that she's the only one.

THIS IS PROPAGANDA PROPEGATED BY THE MAN TO KEEP ME DOWN! I even have an "I Got Erection" t-shirt. I don't wear band t-shirts but I made a special exception in honor of Euroboy.

Also there is nothing wrong with Gene.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 2 March 2003 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, here's one I've been holding deep down inside that just refused to go unannounced...I, being of sound mind and body, actually fucking really enjoy that Justin Timberlake song, even after my initial distaste to finding out that it wasn't actually being performed by a very young still-black Michael Jackson. Yes, I do realize I should also know the name, but I don't. It's the one where he says "...drums". Aaaaaaahhh.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 2 March 2003 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I have often confessed to quite diggin' "Cry Me a River" by same.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 2 March 2003 23:20 (twenty-three years ago)

That's cos Cry Me A River is a good song.

mosurock (mosurock), Sunday, 2 March 2003 23:42 (twenty-three years ago)

dude nickalicious, damn near everyone on ILM loves that Justin Timberlake song (well, not Ned. Or Dan. And there's like three Russian novels worth of writing on ILM by them explaining why in a most entertaining way)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 2 March 2003 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

what is that i hear? The Glorious Smashing Pumpkins are hated on ilm????!!

Also there is nothing wrong with Gene.

ARGH.

well, not Ned

That's because both it and that bastardly abortion "Cry Me a River" are worthy of little more than FLAMING AND BURNING CONTEMPT FOR THEIR MERE EXISTENCE. The apologists are deluded and I am right, ME ME ME ME.

Yay.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 3 March 2003 00:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 3 March 2003 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

if not Usher, George Michael.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 3 March 2003 01:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd say the Pumpkins but they've already been mentioned, like, seven times, so they probably don't count.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 3 March 2003 01:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got lots of time for George Michael....or at least up until Older .

Mean Guy, Monday, 3 March 2003 04:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel like FT/ILM was way more indie-centric when it started out.

Yeah, it was.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 3 March 2003 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Re: Two very amazing albums (Tonight and Never Let me Down):
Glad to see somebody out there can see the good parts of Never Let me Down (the a-side almost makes up for the b-side), but Tonight only has a weak Tina duet and "Blue Jean" to justify its existence. I still say if you get a comp with "Blue Jean" on it, you don't need Tonight 'cuz the entire album is like the b-side of Never Let me Down

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I feel like FT/ILM was way more indie-centric when it started out.
Yeah, it was.

Why did that change?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 3 March 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I was listening to different things and wanted to try writing about them, and people started noticing the stuff which wasn't about indie more than the stuff which was.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 3 March 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I love the Style Council. I'm not fucking kidding.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 3 March 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

(Obviously, FT and ILM are still pretty indie-centric)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 3 March 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Depends on one's definition of Indie.
All the "indie" stuff I grew up on is either extinct or on a major label now.

I guess I like quite a few that are hated here: Tortoise, Guided By Voices, Clash, Ryan Adams, one Travis album (The Man Who),Belle and Sebastian, Gomez, Teenage Fanclub and I am sure there are others. Oh and I risk eternal wrath by stating that I think that Laughing Stock by Talk Talk is a big bore.

I'd like to point out for the record that I don't actively hate on certain artists, I merely hate them. The prepopsition, on, is entirely superfluous to the process.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 23 February 2004 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember a big thread where everyone was pretty unanimously hating Stevie Wonder and when I read it I was all: "OMG!!! WTF!!!"

Dan I., Monday, 23 February 2004 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(actually, reading that thread again I realize that most people didn't hate him. It was just the fact that anyone could dislike him that amazed me I guess).

Dan I., Monday, 23 February 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

*sigh*

Eric Clapton. No bullshit. I like his work with Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, that record he did with Delaney & Bonnie. I like the Derek and the Dominoes album (of course I could go the rest of my life without hearing "Layla" and be a-ok). I even like some of his solo work ("Promises", his cover of Don Williams' "We're All The Way"). And while I think he should be strung up for "I Shot the Sheriff", I really kind of dig his version of Tosh's "What 'Cha Gonna Do." Granted, I can't stand 70% of his output (and that'd be 100% post-'79) but I think he still would fit the parameters of this thread.

You may ban me now.

That's just sick snd wrong.

Will (will), Monday, 23 February 2004 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually think DMX and the Chemical Brothers get enough love here. At least as long as I'm around. And the Clapton assessment upthread is pretty OTM (though throw "Layla" in the positives column -- I say that as someone who owns the Goodfellas DVD).

Time to mention the Darkness (and make the donuts).

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Monday, 23 February 2004 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, okay. Well, when I was in fifth grade my buddy Justin and I decided to do a dance routine to some novelty song about pirates, and peformed a little pantamime for a class of 24. Which has little to do with ELO, I guess. But I think that beats any Jeff-Lynn induced trauma.

A relief to read this... Downloaded it after reading the good press, thinking it might be the missing link. Somnolescent noodling with horrible overwrought vocals. I'd rather listen to Traffic.

I refuse to believe that Zappa (at least Mothers-era) and Stevie Wonder are hated here.

I love (not the collected works, naturally) Cake, Elastica, Beck, Spoon ( the last seems to be hated as much as liked here), and (duck) about 1/2 of Nelly Furtado's first album. I hate New Order, the Cure, the Pixies.

I freely proclaim my love for the Chemical Brothers and Beck. Fuck hateration. I also own the last Gold Chains record but I don't know if it upsets me because I bought it instead of Kelis' Wanderland or if I bought it because I was upset about someone else buying Wanderland instead of me.

I'm mostly bored by 'Hey Ya!', apart from the chorus.

That's because both it and that bastardly abortion "Cry Me a River" are worthy of little more than FLAMING AND BURNING CONTEMPT FOR THEIR MERE EXISTENCE. The apologists are deluded and I am right, ME ME ME ME.

I 'heard' this post as being spoken by Hugo Weaving. It's oddly Agent Smith-esque, especially the last part.

Hey, I do too... Maybe it helps if I say it was the first GvsB album I owned, but I still think it is a fine album, slicker and more produced than the others, but nice nonetheless. And "Black Hole" is still one of their most funkier tracks.

Freak*On*Ica 0wNZ

C'mon Ned, it's funny and fun with the attempts to sound all jet-set and jaded, it's like being all proud of putting together your outfit and bragging about last season's Gucci shoes that you found on sale and then realizing when you get to the party that everybody is filthy rich and coked up and dressed in like new Balenciaga. Not that this has happened to me, I can't even afford the shoes on sale. (wow, I sound like Tori Amos or something.)

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Do people actually hate Freak*on*ica, though? I'll admit that I had high hopes for it when it came out (GvsB finally conceding their admiration for Killing Joke -- and many other great bands like Gang of Four and the Birthday Party -- by roping in producer Nick Launay), but the end results were so limply devoid of actual "tunes" that it became virtually impossible to get excited about. But hate?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Add: Gorillaz (or at least the 1st album, they had no good b-sides, ranging form decent to bullshit) and the cover of 'Here's Where The Story Ends' (which doesn't count in context but I want to proclaim the love for the song and the singer, Shelley Nelson, somewhere...).

Barima (Barima), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, check my link. I don't hate every song but, using Daria's nice defense as a reference, Roxy Music -- or Stranded or Country Life -- it ain't.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Who was comparing to Roxy Music, though? Is that the sort've music you expected when you first played it?

5. cLOUDDEAD

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Who was comparing to Roxy Music, though?

Not directly, dear sir -- Daria's description of the album made me think of Roxy aesthetics. As for what I expected, I expected something that followed on logically from "Bulletproof Cupid" and "TheKindaMzkYouLike" as opposed to being generic.

So I should or shouldn't come out and tell everyone (who doesn't already know) what a huge Anticon nerd I am?

I think Santana's Supernatural is a good album. Maybe I wouldn't say I love it but I like it a lot overall.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

I'm quite a fan of the best-selling album by these guys:

sublime. the worst? i mean THE WORST???

And I just played the new Everclear album yesterday, which sounds exactly the same as every other album they've made except not as good, and I *still* found plenty of stuff to like on the thing.

(I THINK those two bands count, though it's possible they don't.)

xhuxk (xheddy), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

I got out that GvsB album early this year and it sounded terrible, but probably more to do with time passing, sometimes albums sound different and interesting, sometimes they don't. was pretty surprised to find a thread here where a lot of people suddenly liked Hole's Celebrity Skin (great record)

dar1a g (daria g), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

I liked Girls Vs. Boys in their day, too (especially *House of*). They sounded kinda like a missing link between the Fall and Lifter Puller, with some Killing Joke and Pyschedelic Furs tossed in. What's wrong with that?? It beat the heck out of Jon Spencer, for crissakes (just to pick a random example of a concurrent indie hearththrob type.) (And Rockist is right about *Supernatural* btw) (or at least "Smooth," which was great. I ASSUME the rest was okay.)

xhuxk (xheddy), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

I THINK those two bands count, though it's possible they don't.

Everclear *seemed* like a critical darling when Sparkle and Fade came out ... now, I was a senior in college at the time and not as tuned into rock-crit, but I do remember Michael Goldberg at Addicted to Noise singing their praises feverishly and calling "Heroin Girl" one of the best songs ever written. I'm not a huge Everclear fan, but I do respect Alexakis as an artist and think "Santa Monica" and "Father of Mine" were great singles.

Sublime, though, always has seemed reviled, which I don't get, because I think Brad Nowell was a really talented songwriter and that had he lived, the self-titled record would have made him an enormous star (not that he didn't do pretty damn well when he was dead, but could have been ENORMOUS).

O'Connor (OConnorScribe), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 00:08 (nineteen years ago)

I think Sade is pretty terrific.

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 03:37 (nineteen years ago)

I really really enjoyed the disc 3 of Clapton's Crossroads that I listened to earlier. The drummer on his 70s sessions - this Jamie Oldaker character -- is shit-hot!

I like "Such Great Heights" by Postal Service!!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 07:55 (nineteen years ago)

This "one-downsmanship"'s a funny thing - it's kinda disappointing to defiantly proclaim love for a performer, only to find that said performer is actually much less hated-on than you'd assumed.

Rush

Bill Magill (Bill Magill), Thursday, 6 July 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

Arrested Development sucked, honestly. I didn't realize Anticon got hated here, or Everclear (Sparkle and Fade is a fantastic album, one of the top 10 of the '90s, though nothing else they did really got to me).

And I like the second Stone Roses album a million times more than their debut.

But I think Chuck Eddy keeps many of the bands that I love who get a critical consensus against them from being really actively hated on ILM.

Except ICP, who I still have a soft spot for even though I realize they suck.

There's a stack of Rush love on ILM.

What I love most about this thread is this term actively hated on. Because you know, hated on is one thing, but *actively* hated on, I mean, that's just stepping over the line, isn't it?

Lenny Koggins (Bimble...), Thursday, 6 July 2006 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

"There's a stack of Rush love on ILM."

Good, there should be.

Bill Magill (Bill Magill), Friday, 7 July 2006 15:05 (nineteen years ago)

The only mentions I can recall seeing about Cell were pretty meanspirited, but I thought they were a good band. First album was shoegazey grunge (indie-rock fans of Isis, Pelican, etc, might dig it actually). The second was more mellow, with lots Television-style guitar intertwinings.

todd (todd), Friday, 7 July 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

I LIKE BEULAH. KIND OF A LOT. THERE. I SAID IT.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Friday, 7 July 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't know Arrested Development were hated on by ILM

Yeah there's a whole thread on Pazz and Jop hindsight based on the No. 1 P&J appearance of 3 Days, etc.

That album is still adventurous and dizzying, and old white people embracing it in 1993 is WAY less insincere than young white people singing Dipset's praise in 2006.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Friday, 7 July 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

I unabashedly, unironically love REO Speedwagon. Just the hits and well known songs, but enough to fill an 80 minute CD.

Take It On The Run, Roll With The Changes, Don't Let Him Go, Time For Me To Fly...these are all timeless immortal classics that I'll never get tired of hearing.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 7 July 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

Confession: I'm part of the Rush love, in fact, I pulled out Power Windows last Saturday morning, I'd woke up early and one of the songs had got in my head out of the blue for no reason at all. That was always my favourite Rush album. Even though I can also think of criticisms to made of it in hindsight, hasn't aged well, etc. I guess it's still my favourite regardless.

Lenny Koggins (Bimble...), Saturday, 8 July 2006 03:19 (nineteen years ago)

Also WHY WHY WHY do I only have it on cassette now? Why? I used to have it on vinyl but clearly god hates me.

Palomino (Palomino), Sunday, 16 July 2006 21:38 (nineteen years ago)

four years pass...

This is a thread that comes up when you search for "KT Tunstall" on ILM. Her new single "Fade Like A Shadow" is fucking awesome to me. NB once during what was pretty much the darkest hour of my life her song "Hopeless" basically kept me from falling right over the fucking cliff so there's something untranslateable about her stuff & me that has probably less to do with her stuff than with me but be that as it may this new song is totally fucking good in my opinion. I thank you for your time and as my friend Louis is fond of saying, you will find the "Suggest Ban" button conveniently located to the right of my name.

I like about three Gay Dad songs! :D

aerosmith, my opinions of KT Tunstall are based entirely on her naming an album 'Drastic Fantastic' and not at all on her music, so you have a nominal pass tbh
