Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 1 August 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

they are. let's hang Mr. Diamond from the gallows.

oops (Oops), Friday, 1 August 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

No AIR was simply one of the greatest jazz ensembles of all-time:

Henry Threadgill - reeds
Fred Hopkins - bass
Steve McCall - percussion

Made many, many fantastic albums in the 70's; waaay before those shitty frogs began peddling their aural wallpaper..

(also as long as we're claiming credit, I said Harmonia, Dinosaur Jr. [but only for the 1st 3 lps please], and Jimmy Giuffre 3 before others bit my rhymes)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 1 August 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Young Canadians, Elevator and Kearny Lake Road.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 1 August 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Mr. Diamond, I didn't see your Dino Jr reference above, but since you only had them for the first 3 lps, can I have them for "Where You Been" with J, Murph, & Mike?

BrianB, Friday, 1 August 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

oh ..hmmm... oh ok I'll let you. :)

really, I just think the J./Lou tension made the band great.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 1 August 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

''No AIR was simply one of the greatest jazz ensembles of all-time''

can you recommend a couple of recs?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 1 August 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

propagandhi

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 1 August 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

oh diamond i just looked at the AACM thread and i saw yr recommenadtions there.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 1 August 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, Julio, the problem is I'm not sure what's currently in print, but I've never heard a bum record by them. I know for a fact at least one of the records they did for Black Saint - Air Mail received a cd issue at some point in the 90's, but I haven't heard that one and have no idea if it is still available.

My favorites by them are probably 80 Degrees Below '82 - the first record I heard by them, and the last made by the original group (McCall ended up being replaced by Pheeroan AkLaff; this group's records are ok but not as spectacular - actually one of them also features one of the earliest appearances on record of Cassandra Wilson!) 80 Degrees Below '82 came out on a major though (Antilles), so I can't imagine used copies are extremely scarce or anything. I also really like the very first recording, Air Song, which I think has been given a reissue as an import cd.

Anyway, I think you'd like them. They're one of the key AACM affiliated ensembles. Sometimes they play fairly freely, other times more reined in by Threadgill's great melodies. They played together for over a decade, and they have that great telepathic interplay and sense of dynamics that long-time working units achieve. The trio format allows for a lot space in the music. McCall and Hopkins are pretty active players - for my money THE great unheralded rhythm section (and sadly both no longer with us) - and create a supple bed for Threadgill's post-bop lines.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 1 August 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah thanks diamond. I'm on slsk now and I'm downloading lots of free jazz/microhouse so I'll look out for that.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 1 August 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)
