this song is so beautiful and happy. i'm so glad it's starting to get some heavy airplay here, they even play the whole long thing.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 21 September 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it's sad

jones (actual), Sunday, 21 September 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

clapping in the name of love is lonely

jones (actual), Sunday, 21 September 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i need to go outside

jones (actual), Sunday, 21 September 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

man this completely sounds like it should be on What's Going On. i almost feel like he's got marvin's ghost actually singing on the track.

not a bad song, but for some reason the mp3 of it i have has a really annoying tick on most of the claps. it's way louder than the rest of the track. i'm not sure if this is on the cd and it's poor production or if it's just bad encoding?

JasonD (JasonD), Sunday, 21 September 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

bad encoding - the production is buttery ultra smooth... how could you suggest otherwise, this is r we are talking about!

I would like to state once again how much I love this song. It seems to be on the radio roughly 50% of the time when I turn it on, and I never get sick of it.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 07:47 (twenty-two years ago)

the video's way cute. all the older couples dressed in white dancing. and zoro dancing like James Brown

I love this song , everybody has to love this song , it's the best song I've heard in a long time. R. Kelly's songs are all soo good.

holly summers, Friday, 16 January 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

can't believe you all leave your conscience at the door. r kelly is a creep. and if i hear him roll out his "afterparty/hotel lobby" bullshit once more...

This might be my favorite R. Kelly song ever.

If I were to eliminate the creeps from my record collection, I probably wouldn't have a record collection.

definitely my favorite of all the Chocolate Factory singles.

Speaking of which, have we all read the new Richard Goldstein essay on R. Kelly and Michael Jackson yet?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 17 January 2004 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

does it ever dawn on people that the reason he's doing so well right now might have something to do with the fact that he's making the best music of his career?

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 17 January 2004 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"As for Jacko: If he wants to save his career, he'll have to start fooling around with 14-year-old girls."

no, dumbass, he'll have to start making good records again.

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 17 January 2004 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, you would think the whole pissing thing would be, like, an impediment and the quality of the work is what has pulled him through.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 17 January 2004 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, has there been a review of Chocolate Factory or R in R&B Collection that DIDN'T mention the child abuse charges? I mean, rightly so! but Goldstein seems to think it's all a big joke to people, and I don't really see that being the case.

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 17 January 2004 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos on point. If Michael Jackson could make one single even a quarter as good as "I Want You Back," all would be forgiven/ignored/minimized. Unfortunately, MJ has not made a good song since "Jam," so it's the hoosegow for Jacko

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 17 January 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Goldstein is conveniently ignoring the influence of the Bayeux Tapestry of Dysfunction that has been Jackson's public life for the last twenty-plus years -- peeing on underaged girls, however twisted or illegal it is, is in comparison nowhere near as audience-alienating as the plastic surgery and the baby-dangling and the hyperbaric chambers and Bubbles the Chimp and the "Jew me" line and the mannequins and the...

Goldstein fucks up because he's so insistent on viewing the seeming inconsistency of the public reaction to these similiar-ish scandals solely through the prism of gender (with, oh, maybe a quick glimpse of the race prism) when there's so much OTHER ones to look at, too. Like, class (or wealth), authenticity, music quality etc.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 19 January 2004 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

That and the fact that "like the sun" he just wants to "shine on everybody".

the icebox (nordicskilla), Monday, 19 January 2004 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

that's a lot more ambiguous, though

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 19 January 2004 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, he doesn't say "just like the sun, I'd like to spread my golden showers all over you, little girl" or anything, you know?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

OK Matos, but I guess "the best music of his career" is still cheesy, annoying, empty, and soulless. he has so few ideas, it hurts me to think of it as r 'n b.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

but do you really like his voice? the ridiculous multi-tracking? the way he's rhymed "hotel lobby" with "freak somebody" about 9 times? the fact that he's blotted hov's history forever?

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

R.Kelly songs are all sooo good. I love singing and i'm in love with all of his songs. Step in the name of love has been one of the best. Everybody loves this song even my little 3yrs old baby sister. It's also popular on the radio station. Thter's no way i could get tired of it.

Danier Lucien, Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I actually prefer the non-remix album version

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I love, love, love about 75% of the Chocolate Factory album. Yes the voice, even to the point where I wanna say "Paul how can you not love that voice?" Yes the production. I will even go so far as to say the lyrics are great, though parsing them in print to defend them would be a pretty overwhelming project. Not that I haven't been working on a piece trying to do just that for over a year.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

as to "blotting hov's history," please please please. Blueprint 2 being overlong by about thirty minutes did more damage, as did brazen money-grab 2.1

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Chococate Factory is unbelievably strong. It drops a bit in the middle, but the 4 first and last tracks are fantastic.

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I really wish I'd bought this when that bonus Loveland CD was on it. Now I really want it but I'm holding out to find the bonus 2CD used.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually still haven't played it.. Am I missing out?

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

you are. and I agree re: the album "Step" being better than the remix.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Last night I did the washing-up and sang along to "Bad Man" on my iPod.

this post:

haha do alert us when you've removed the cloth from yr ears, won't you?

proves that Matos IS actually Marcello, thus confirming many of my suspicions.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos,

If MJ's on the outs with fans because his "career for the past 15 years (did someone say 20? 2004 is the anniversary of the Victory Tour, after all) has been one public-relations-puzzle-cum-disaster after another"

then how do you arrive at this conclusion--

"If Jackson wants to save his career, he'll have to start making good records again. Period."

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus Invincible > Bad

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

good records trump bad PR, at least in Kelly's case. and Invincible sucks, dude.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

(so did Bad, so it's not like your equation is wrong)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

also, I was responding directly to the piece Goldstein wrote, which said unilaterally that MJ was up shit creek because he (allegedly) diddled little boys and RK wasn't because he (allegedly) diddled little girls. he managed to ignore a LOT of facts, two of the most important being MJ's continual PR nightmare and RK's creative upswing.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

in other words, I don't think he's on the outs with his fans solely because of the PR stuff--that's a pretty major factor, and it's one Goldstein bafflingly ignored, but I do think people's increasing disinterest in his music played a much larger part.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not agreeing with Goldstein, or disagreeing with what you say about Jackson's PR history, but the "Period" strongly implies that the *only* thing Michael Jackson would have to do to save his career is make a good record.

"good records trump bad PR, at least in Kelly's case"
debatable, but since Kelly isn't Jackson, doesn't prove your conclusion

"Invincible sucks, dude."
See, what hope does MJ have of getting the masses to hear good music when even some of our best critics turn a deaf ear to it?

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

this is gonna turn into howard the duck vs. man-thing any minute, i just know it.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

you're right, should've left off the "Period." and Keith, I've heard Invincible--several times, I worked at a record store when it came out, remember?--and it's really, really spotty. ("Butterflies" I'll grant you, certainly, but most of the uptempo stuff sounds like warmed-over versions of the Teddy Riley stuff on Dangerous. and I'm saying this as someone who likes about half--the first half, natch--of HIStory. and most of Dangerous, for that matter.) but I don't recall liking much of ANYTHING off Bad, so again, you're right.

in short, strongo otm.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

also haha the public really goes along with critics, don't they Mr. Fiery Furnaces in My Top Ten = 5 million sold.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I swear, Fiery Furnaces were just about to go platinum, and then Xgau sloughed em off as just an honorable mention--now everyone's throwing their money at Ramiro Musotto.

"you're right, should've left off the "Period."

Yay! I'm gonna go take a victory lap around the office!

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

A big diff between R Kelly and MJ is that people are only vaguely aware of R Kelly as a public persona whereas more people probably know MJ for being that weird guy on tv than for writing "Billie Jean" these days. I think there's more in common between MJ and Madonna in terms of how people interface the image and the music than there is between MJ and R Kelly. Interestingly both Madonna's and MJ are still having club hits ("One More Chance" has big 12" sales it seems) despite their inability to chart well at the moment. Perhaps the dancefloor decontextualises their music a bit more (in Madonna's case maybe remixes improve the music too). I think with R Kelly, despite his practice of inserting his persona into his songs through blatant self-referencing, there's less persona-stuff to process before enjoying or not enjoying the music for what it is. His records aren't as much "talking-point" records.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 5 February 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm - I'm not really following you there. I think RK has pretty much turned into played up the persona thing this year, because of his legal troubles sure, but also through all the meta stuff you're mentionning. Chocolate Factory is a great album, period, but becomes even better when taking into account the whole context, ie. what Matos is saying: RK is completely shutting down the opposition by releasing one career-topping single after an another. The awkward tone of most recent reviews (i.e. 'we shouldn't be enjoying this so much') is the clearest sign of how he's winning the battle.
I can't help but to wonder what would have happened to MJ if he'd used the tracks he was offered and that ended up on Justified. Is he already too far gone or could he have pulled it away?

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Friday, 6 February 2004 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man, it's still great. I even have the fucking thing as my ringtone.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 18 March 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

my wife has taken the mystery out of the Googler tendency to address the artist under discussion: she says it's that the Googler believes he/she is signing a guestbook. While this explanation makes perfect sense, it has depressed me, because I was heretofore delightfully mystified by the way Googlers consistently speak directly to the artist.

Did everybody else already have this one figured out?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 18 March 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

No J0hn, you see, they are all talking to you.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 18 March 2004 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Very funny Curt1s. My own confusion lay in the idea that there were people who thought "if I write it in a public place, the artist will see it!" and just ran with the idea.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 18 March 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

rgeary (rgeary), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

this song is kind of sad, though. I think between this and ignition you can really sum up what's compelling about r. kelly at the moment- even though it's not r. himself who is celebrating anything, he's gonna step anyway.

rgeary (rgeary), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

So word on the street is R Kelly was found not guilty re: child porn.

I hope this doesn't mean his creative streak is over.

djdee2005, Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

plus, while the original is not bad and certainly does no damage to chocolate factory (the bass is a little slappy though) the remix comes in and just sucks you in with that understated sway. oh and the finger snapping! and r.'s split-second marvin impression.

rgeary (rgeary), Thursday, 18 March 2004 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The Reverend, Sunday, 12 April 2009 21:14 (seventeen years ago)

i always wanted that line to resolve into some kind of rhyme w/ the word "back" so for like 6 months i thought he was saying "love slap" or "love slack" or something

uptown churl, Monday, 13 April 2009 04:40 (seventeen years ago)

a) how amazing is his phrasing on this song?

The-Reverend (rev), Monday, 13 April 2009 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

is it a challop to say this track destroys "Ignition (Remix)" or just the god's honest truth?

brewer and what (some dude), Monday, 13 April 2009 15:48 (seventeen years ago)

god's honest truth

the sultan of ban (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 April 2009 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

seems like kind of a fool's errand to pick between the two

europeen handball (k3vin k.), Monday, 13 April 2009 17:40 (seventeen years ago)

i was always the lone holdout saying the original "Ignition" is better than the remix fwiw

brewer and what (some dude), Monday, 13 April 2009 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

okay, now that is a challop, although the way they segue into each other on the album is brilliant

The-Reverend (rev), Monday, 13 April 2009 17:53 (seventeen years ago)
