it's here, it's queer, get used to it!

why all the jamc-luv these days? is it just because of 'lost in translation' or is there something more going on?

I still don't understand why people think they sound like jamc - though i've kind of gone out of my way to avoid em so what do i know

what i've heard sounds more like oasis

What track and in what context do the Mary Chain appear in "Lost in Translation"?

I haven't seen it yet.

The only track I've heard associated with the flick is "What's So Funny..." by Costello (Murray karaoking it?)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:59 (twenty years ago) link

I still don't understand why people think they sound like jamc

It's more JAMC filtered through Love and Rockets' attempts on same -- which I adore, but BRMC proceed to take that formula and then, well, make it suck. One Spacemen 3 ripoff aside, they're a fairly boring and joyless crew.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:00 (twenty years ago) link

According to some friends in a band that played with them, they (the BRMC) take themselves VERY seriously.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:01 (twenty years ago) link

i kinda like the jamc-ishness of the raveonettes, but i haven't heard much

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:12 (twenty years ago) link

The new BRMC isn't very JAMC-ish at all. I think they tried to do a more straight-ahead garage-rock album, and it turned out even worse.

I saw the Raveonettes described as JAMC meets Buddy Holly. Intriguing, but I don't know if it's worth finding their album.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:23 (twenty years ago) link

I really like the first Ravonettes album "Whip It On." It's like if JAMC were into surfing. Deadpan, cruising sexiness.

I'm going to see BRMC tonight. I'm going in with an open mind. But I agree the new album is underwhelming.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:32 (twenty years ago) link

b-b-b-but JAMC were into surfing. deadpan, even.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 14:40 (twenty years ago) link

I just don't hear the connection between bands of late and JAMC. Even BRMC look the look but certainly don't have the sound. It's the sound, GDI.

Michael G, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:04 (twenty years ago) link

i dunno, i personally prefer SMC to JAMC and BRMC but maybe GHMC is better or possibiliy IFJDOMC, MCCMMCCM, or HFRUEIIMC

fds, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:08 (twenty years ago) link

Alex, skip work and go see the flick today. It's a must. "...Honey" plays over the end credits, incidentally. And Murray does karaoke the Elvis Costello song, but he kills with the Roxy Music song, which he sings like Ian Curtis. Goosebumps. Movie of the year.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 15:11 (twenty years ago) link

I just got the Raveonettes first album today. Definitely in JAMC territory. Soundwise, it reminds me of the JAMC cover of "Who Do You Love" and of their more surf-guitar stuff. Only problem: all the songs sound very much the same, and they're all in the same key (on the cover, it proudly states that all songs are in the same key). So, any given song is great, but listening to eight in a row, they really start to blend together.

dlp9001, Tuesday, 23 September 2003 17:27 (twenty years ago) link

dammit, ive got the sdtrk, but the movie hasnt come out here yet. i dont know if it ever will. ive been looking forward to it for much too long to miss out.

the best JAMC influenced bands these days are Radio Dept and House of Mexico who both ROCK in a noisy twee sort of way

According to some friends in a band that played with them, they (the BRMC) take themselves VERY seriously.

That's a surprise? Even the bands who (generally) swear they are "fun-loving" (ie. in a press kit) take their craft seriously.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 22:42 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I'm a gonna ditto the Raveonettes raving. They're a *good* JAMC/early MBV rip-off band. They do slavishly know their genre, but they somehow manage to be both cool and fun-loving with it.

Otherwise, I really don't much like the post-post-JAMC bands. BRMC can suck my big hairy moose's cock, as can the Warlocks.

Someone must have forcefed them sugar. Did they actually move on stage or would that have hurt them?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 19:41 (twenty years ago) link

I think the closest anyone has come to the Jesus and Mary Chain recently is, *gulp*, Andrew WK's "She is Beautiful" - especially that "I ain't got nothin' to lose..." part. It's very easy to imagine Jim Reid singing that and the sound is very Mary Chain. All these other bands like BRMC and Raveonettes are basically DOA, they just have no strong tunes/hooks and no bite to the sound - especially BRMC who are just a godawful dirge (though their new record is better than the last one).

The Living End
Taste of Cindy
Some Candy Talking
Psychocandy
The Hardest Walk (Some Kind of Wonderful OST vers.)
April Skies
Kill Surf City
Happy When It Rains
Everything is Alright When You're Down
Darklands
Deep One Perfect Morning
Nine Million Rainy Days
Cherry Came Too
On the Wall
Sidewalking
Don't Ever Change
Blues From a Gun
My Girl
Head On
Sometimes Always

(ok, this one is very personal and ignores their later stuff. they're one of my three favorite bands and this collection represents some of my most treasured music, but the last 3 albums just didn't do it for me. "Reverence" is the glaring omission here because I like the idea and lyrics, but the song itself is kind of a tuneless dud. I'd also like to have had "Far Gone and Out" or "Almost Gold" but they're just not as good as the tracks that fit 80 minutes on this one.

I'd love to have someone recommend a CD80 for the last three albums/b-sides.

The list is chronological for official releases per song appearance - 81:21 overburn!)

dan (dan), Friday, 7 November 2003 00:32 (twenty years ago) link

they just don't do it right. If they were actually cool/sexy it would work. I think the Strokes follow a similar kind of "cool" dress code and it works better for them. I guess nowadays with the pervasiveness of stylists etc, people withhold the bestowing of cool. When Jim and William dressed like the VU and spray stenciled c*nt onto their button down shirts (buttoned all the way up) it was like the coolest thing in the universe.

Hey, whatever happened to that touted JAMC revival last year? It never seemed to get off the ground. Sigh.

I'm listening to Munki today. Time has been kind to it. At the time, I remember having an "OMG, WTF?" reaction to it because it was almost like the JAMC recording a satire of a JAMC album.

But with some time and distance, that's what's so great about it.

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 11 October 2004 09:18 (nineteen years ago) link

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 11 October 2004 09:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Are they ever going to release the video on DVD?

I mean, honestly. My tape has just disintergrated in ... certain sections. I need a nice, clear, DVD, frame by frame-playable version.

But anyway, yeah. Munki. I mean, maybe it sounds so great because I've heard so much crap lately. I wonder how charitable I would feel if I put on Blues From A Gun or something.

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 11 October 2004 09:33 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, and i'd like a second video collection preferably one containing the teenage lust video that we never got to see when it was out.

didn't like munki when i hear it recently (apart from Moe Tucker) but Honey's Dead was GREAT on another listen.

The one I'm most likely to 'dig' out is Stoned and Dethroned, funnily enough. "Come On" is one of their best singles, it's just that it's got a particularly feeble title.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 11 October 2004 12:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Stoned and Dethroned... hrmmm. That's the one that left the least impression on me. Even though I saw them quite a bit on that tour, my main memory was always "Ho-Ho-Hope, ugh." (Going onstage with the JAMC and complaining that there's *feedback* - what is she thinking?) I suppose there were some decent tracks on it, but some truly dire lyrics. "Jesus walks on the water, we walk on wetness, too" or something like that?

I mean, sure, they're not known for their lyrical prowess, but it's a long way from "I'll be your plastic toy" or even "I wanna die on a sunny day" for chrissake.

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 11 October 2004 12:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Odd. I was actually blasting Psychocandy this weekend. When the wife and child returned home from an errand, my wife furrowed her lovely brow and said, "what on earth is this awful noise?". It's still got it!

amazon review for 'sound of speed':
"Reviewer: kat791 from england
not what i was expecting, but good nonetheless. the leonrad cohen cover 'the tower of song' is way cool, as is the cover of 'my girl'. cool acoustic guitar and the singer's got a nice voice. pretty good. similar to the beta band."

Why does "Automatic" get so little respect? Yeah, I wish they hadn't used a drum machine, and they were clearly trying to sell out a bit with an album of straight-ahead rock songs. But what great songs they are! And the production hasn't dated any more than that on "Darklands".

I love Automatic too. However, the production has dated a little more than Darklands as it has fewer distinguishable electronics. However, Darklands is mostly drum machine too! (some people disagree with me on this point. unfortunately, they are wrong).

It's hard to say whether their music is more the kind where it'll be reasy easy to get up and start playing again, or the kind where they'll inevitably seem a bit old and trying-too-hard when they do. (They sounded like they were straining a bit by the fourth LP, actually, but on the other hand if they just remember to act as bored as possible, it'd totally work.)

How about some dates that are NOT at Festivals?

You know, for those of us that wanna see the Mary Chain, but don't want to pay overinflated ticket prices to wade through a bunch of other crap?

Or do non-Festival gigs just not pay enough to provide the beer habit necessary to make them get on with each other.

PJ Miller, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 13:26 (seventeen years ago) link

There's a big gap before the Connect Festival where I'd expect them to schedule some UK gigs.

That said, I think there's every chance they'll be twatting each other with guitars before they reach Spain and it won't matter.

It was a good show. I'm not the biggest fan of them, so I didn't know most of the songs. Jim sang on "Cracking Up" and forgot the first line, so they had to restart it. My friend said that the bassist from Lush and the drummer from Ride were playing with them. Yes, it was Annie (not from Norway) instead of Scarlett Johannson. Their new song sounded just like their old songs, and had lyircs like "every day I wake might be the last...every drug I take might be the last..."

But yeah, they sounded good, and played "Just Like Honey" and "Head On" which is all that mattered.

Never Understand
Head On
Far Gone and Out
Sidewalking
Snakedriver
Catchfire
Happy When It Rains
Dead End Kids* (old Freeheat/Jim solo song)
Some Candy Talking
Between Planets
Blues From a Gun
Cracking Up
All Things Must Pass
Teenage Lust
Just Like Honey
-----------------
Reverence
Vegetable Man
You Trip Me Up

*Not sure when this was played in the set - am fairly sure it was around this point

You're probably right and I just got lucky with returns. I got a seat right by the stage on the left hand side underneath the boxes.

Pastels sound was a little muddy at first, but they played Nothing To Be Done so I was happy. JAMC did look a bit miserable, but well that's to be expected! No storming offstage like last time I saw them.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 23 June 2007 15:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Catchfire

omfg this is probably one of my all-time favorite songs

HI DERE, Saturday, 23 June 2007 15:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Nina gets around (isn't she on the new manics single?)

> Pastels sound was a little muddy at first

no change there then 8)

> Only 15 years, Koogs?

that'd be 1992, the almost gold lp, so yes. although anytime before then would also be fine, obv. after that it's touch and go. actually, '92 is a bit late for the pastels, is their jad fair period, when stephen seemed to stop singing. did see them a couple of times then and a couple more after (both supporting b&s, new york and camber sands) and kinda enjoyed them both times. but, yes, again, earlier would be better better.

Masonic Boom, Monday, 25 June 2007 11:33 (sixteen years ago) link

We went to see the Ramones, at Brixton Academy, back in.

Upstairs seated was all that was left. Better than nothing, obv, for that one. Their last UK gig ever.

Mark G, Monday, 25 June 2007 11:36 (sixteen years ago) link

But no. Apart from bands who are going to split up and/or die, never do that.

Mark G, Monday, 25 June 2007 11:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I assume "Up too high" is "Send me away" from the early demos cassette.

Oh, but what about "Upside Down" from the original 12"? (sort of demo version)

Mark G, Friday, 27 June 2008 07:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah I was looking for that one - the Upside Down demo, that is. At least this is actually coming out, I was thinking it'd been scrapped.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 27 June 2008 08:20 (fifteen years ago) link

A fantastic collection. A case could be made for the Mary Chain's castoffs one-upping much of their album material, especially during their later years. So this pretty much mega-compiles tbe tracks already compiled on Barbed Wire Kisses, The Sound of Speed, and I Hate Rock n Roll, right?

Pillbox, Friday, 27 June 2008 08:52 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, just thought: "Jesus Suck" still remains unreleased.

Mark G, Friday, 27 June 2008 10:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah I'm slightly disappointed with this, seeing as I already own Barbed Wire Kisses, Sound Of Speed & I Hate Rock'n'Roll, there's not really much point in me buying it. It's good that some of the early B-sides have finally been reissued (Vegetable Man, Ambition etc) but I have those on vinyl anyway.

Colonel Poo, Friday, 27 June 2008 10:49 (fifteen years ago) link

I have most of these in one form or another but I'll maybe buy this anyway just to have them all together.

They should have included that song at the end of the "legendary" Ambulance Station gig where Jim's just shouting "Fuck You Fuck You" over noise.

A generous friend has just given me his advance of this beautiful package. I love everything about it except perhaps the typeface for the band name which is a bit Vespertine-ish.

Haven't gone through it all yet except to say that the tracks that I have previously on CD sound much better here and much more like the vinyl (although maybe the vocals are a little too clear).

Right away the first track, the achingly lovely "Up Too High (demo '83)" is a revelation. I had always assumed that the "On The Wall (porta studio demo)" was made just before Darklands was recorded but I'm now of the opinion that it too was recorded with "Up Too High" in the very early days. The delicate arrangement is very much at odds with the brutally shambolic bootlegs I have from the same period and really both spotlights their seemingly innate melodic gifts and also amplifies the perversity of drowning such lovely songs in feedback.

There are so many things I'm excited about finally having on CD like "Vegetable Man", "Ambition", "Happy When It Rains (demo)" etc.

The included poster/family tree is lovely and I'm definitely going to frame the singles covers to remind me of how much this band defined rock and roll for me.

I wasn't going to get the b-sides collection, but then I did and wow I'm surprised by how many songs from it I remember well *and* by how good it still sounds. I haven't heard a lot of these in 10 or so years.

Still can't decide if I prefer the debut to Barbed Wire Kisses, and I miss Mushroom which is oddly missing in action. I'd stopped following them by Honey's Dead (did get Munki though) and thus never heard Rollercoaster, which turns out to be great. Can't emphasize enough how much I didn't expect them to sound good in 2008, and how wrong I was.

Finally got round to listening to disc 1 of this. Vegetable Man sounds quite different to the vinyl version, it's obviously the same version but it's been remixed or something. For the better, maybe, there's a lot more separation, you can hear the vocals/guitar noise/etc a lot better whereas my old 7" sounds like a big pile of murk.

I'd forgotten how great "Suck" was...

Mark G, Friday, 7 November 2008 15:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Never Understand is a bit different. The drums are louder. The feedback sounds different.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Friday, 7 November 2008 16:15 (fifteen years ago) link

vegetable man sounds the same to me, or very close.

the echo effect on suck seems new, yes.

ambition, not so different afaict. although i don't remember as much swearing.

funny how the swirls of feedback on never understand, which are random by their very nature, how obvious it is when they are different (worse) from what you're used to.

(heard a busker doing it acoustically once, it's a nice little song under all that noise)

I dug it out recently, and it's all right, actually pretty good.

It suffers though, because it came out well after they'd made it (was going to be the 'next' album for Warners, but they rejected it).

But, as you say, the other albums have their particular identities, whereas this was 'all encompassing' and too long.

I saw them twice and I think they were a great live band in small venues/clubs and a poor live band in theatres/big venues. In the club the volume was more impressive and enveloping and it was fun to be a few feet away from them. On a big stage they just looked like they were standing around waiting for a bus and the venue ate up all the oppresiveness of the sound.

The only one of the Rhino reissues I didn't get was Munki, not sure I want to spend the money on these seeing as I have the box set too.

I know another ilxor (Sick Mouthy maybe?) has railed against them sticking bonus tracks at the end of CDs, but I don't get why thats such a deal breaker for some people. Just stop your CD or don't rip 'em if they bug you that much. As long as they are at the end of the disc and not cluttering up the original tracklisting, I have no issue with this. I'd rather have them cram four extra tracks on that disc than struggling to fill up a second disc worth of crap so they can charge a "deluxe" price.

I went to the RFH gig and nearly got into a fight with Bobby Gillespie in the toilets after I politely asked him why he wasn't playing drums.

It was good in a nostalgia fest kind of way, Snakedriver was particularly robust but William was pretty fucking awful and every time Jim went to say anything between songs he just did a massive power chord so you couldn't hear what he was saying. And they murdered the slower stuff like Nine Million Rainy Days. Pretty sad really.

They were better at the Brutus benefit but I guess that was a more emotionally charged night or what have you.

bobby g looks cool and is funny throughout, especially at end of the riot video.

and have just seen Teenage Lust video for the first time. was banned in uk and i always wondered how bad it could be. the answer is 'pretty bad'. there is a teenage stripper wandering around naked for half of it.

(dvds are all ntsc btw, which is less of a problem than it used to be - i only realised because it said so on the disc, dvd / tv played them fine)

i am surprised at the pastels mention actually. not heard him mention them before. makes sense musically, chronologically and geographically but sometimes that stuff creates a rivalry.

Reissues are great as expected. The mastering on 'Psychocandy' is very different than the Rhino, but I haven't had a chance to listen to my old Blanco y Negro disc to see if it's the same.

Also, in the interviews there's a great line from Jim about an aborted 'Darklands' session that involved Curt Smith of Tears for Fears being brought in to try the intro to the title track and doing a bunch of slap bass.

it is kinda hilarious how much the pre-psychocandy demos sound like the dr mix and the remix record, which either douglas hart or bobby g openly admit to in the liner notes.

Mark G, Monday, 13 February 2012 21:23 (twelve years ago) link

I ordered all the deluxe sets too! have received three so far (they have to cross the pond...) I haven't watched much of the DVDs yet, just a bit of the live sets on Psychocandy & it's hilarious how loud they are. I guess I knew that! But it's just a mess.

Many of the extras are things I already had on the Rhino box, but it's nice to have the BBC sessions with the albums themselves.

I like how JAMC have settled into the "Cal Jam 2" phase of their career while still maintaining some sense of odd weirdness. The Reids are still obstinate but with a coating of the mannered gracefulness that comes from being a professional entertainer - those Bad Vibes could really be a Martin & Lewis act. I'm not Especially when William looks identical to King Buzzo.

On the plus side, now that they seem like they're giving a partial shit, they sound fantastic. I never would have expected them of all bands to be around in 2012, but it felt appropriate for an almost-summer Friday night at a horse race track in Inglewood. Lots of people dancing and singing along. Good times.

pleasantly surprised at the new lp (whereas the slowdive one bought at the same time hasn't grabbed me yet). lots of dumb lyrics in the later songs, but hey...

they are playing the forum (town and country / o2) kentish town on sept 20th, 27 years to the month since i saw them there with the telescopes and the fury things. (31 + 4.5 + 2.5 quid though)

Hi, genuinely shocked here..

Was just looking at the discogs entry for "21 singles", seems its coming out on double-lp for the first time.

The writing credits has Jim writing only four. 'Upside Down', 'Never Understand', 'Come On' and "I love rock and roll'

So, the first two that put the J&MC on the map, and not much after? Amazed...

Mark G, Thursday, 5 July 2018 23:01 (five years ago) link

are those credits correct? on most of their records the songs are credited to both brothers.

fetter, Friday, 22 March 2024 21:27 (one month ago) link

I like it! Just enough variations on the JAMC sound to keep it interesting. Another solid addition (but not essential like the 85-92 stuff, those days are long gone)

StanM, Friday, 22 March 2024 21:31 (one month ago) link

It doesn't even sound like a JAMC album to me. Half the time, it sounds like extremely poor imitation Suicide, with a lyricist about 1/1000 as brilliant as Alan Vega. Also, the last line of this review is hilarious. "As they advance into middle age"? The Reid brothers are 62 and 65.

The cheap-ass synths on almost every track are proof that they were only ever the sum of their guitar pedals. They should have broken up the day after Psychocandy came out. A brilliant one-off gesture > an increasingly tedious "career."

I am of the moderate centrist position that they should have stopped after Automatic

Which is not to say I begrudge them their continued existence, we all must make rent as best we are able in this cursed world

The world is a poorer place without "Almost Gold" and "Far Gone and Out."

poppers fueled buttsex crescendo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 22 March 2024 23:19 (one month ago) link

Perhaps marginally poorer but I am okay with it. I dunno, I lived thru all those 90s JAMC records and saw them at the tail end of their OG incarnation, and it was all good enough. But I think those first three records and Sidewalking are where it is most at.

I like post-Psychocandy JAMC okay, but I can totally understand how they could seem ridiculous, naff, unintentionally comedic/parodic, it’s part of the package I guess

Story I have recounted before: the fights that used to go on for control of the turntable when I worked at a record store in the mid-'80s. I honestly thought Psychocandy was perfect for a busy Saturday afternoon, a much better choice than Robert Palmer or Whitney Houston or Bruce Hornsby or whatever.

I still love the album whenever I revisit something on YouTube, but, from a customer standpoint, I really don't know what I was thinking.

koogs, Sunday, 24 March 2024 18:56 (one month ago) link

@Kraal: the moderate centrist position is definitely defensible, but I think Honey's Dead and the slightly leftfield Stoned and Dethroned are more than worthy. Finding the new one kind of a bummer on the first pass though.

Saw em in Philly on the tour where William bailed (Munki?). Only time I did; wish I'd gotten it together to go sooner.

three of the doctor's valuable bats are now dead (broom air), Sunday, 24 March 2024 19:09 (one month ago) link

Loved Honey's Dead upon release (probably the first album I got from them) and saw them on the US Rollercoaster tour. Worked my way back after that but tuned out by the time Stoned came out (it's nice though and Sometimes Always is a minor classic). Since then, I've filed them in the category of dependable bands who I don't really need anymore new/extra music from. Might pick up the new one since I'm hearing a a bit of extra synth in their sound.

Yeah, this is... not great, it's a pretty mixed bag. Which would be fine for a late career album like this, but the lows are really low.
