'procession' or 'ceremony'

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The Perfect Kiss

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue Fuckin' Monday!!

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Vote two for "Ceremony"

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus. Fuck, I don't know. "The Perfect Kiss" I guess, but first among equals there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

In A Lonely Place

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

All the mixes on Substance are sort of lame. I don't know if I actually have a favorite.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Disc 2 can be interminable at times, but disc 1 is dang solid (let's just not think about "Shellshock"/"State Of The Nation" cuz frankly there's really no reason too)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Agreed that "Shellshock" & "State of the Nation" are both dire, but holy cow, "True Faith"!

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Temptation" by a mile (love it as much as the original)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard that "The Perfect Kiss" was about Ian Curtis (my friend he was so strange/ I often thougt he was deranged), which is kinda weird cuz it reminds you that these addictive bubbleheads were all in JOY DIVISION. Which one wouldn't guess if they weren't aware of the history.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"Temptation" might be my favorite song off of any album.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and I definitely prefer "(The Best Of) New Order" to "Substance," acknowledging that several great songs aren't on the former that are on the latter (but vica versa - give it up for LOVE VIGILANTES!)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony - OTM. I've always been puzzled by the Joy Division > New Order connection. I think it's fucking cool though.

calstars (calstars), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"True Faith"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"Temptation" with BLT close behind.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I think Spencer wants a sandwich.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"blt" fools!!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, like, best song ever!!!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Best video break ever too.

"You're a real...UP person."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

we MUST have a NO DVD comp!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Fucking long overdue! And a combined JD/NO set with everything they ever did plus the live videos would be even better!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"blt" followed by "shellshock", you non-masochists (haha)

etc, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

oh fuck, forgot about "Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato" [smacks self]

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

'1963' (i know this is wrong)

typo acapulco (gcannon), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ceremony" is just about the best song by anyone ever so I'd have to go with that.

Kent Burt (lingereffect), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

One more for "True Faith"

Xii (Xii), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Temptation, which is probably as said above the best track, like, evah. 'Everything's gone green' is not bad either..

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Thieves like us

MikeB, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

temptation (then bacon lettuce).

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Confusion

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Disc One - Thieves like us
Disc Two - Hurt

I was playing it again last week for the first time in ages and I'd forgotten how much I love it all.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Disc One : Thieves Like Us
Disc Two : Lonesome Tonight

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Perfect Kiss

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Dr C OTM.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, Dr C does have a very good point!

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

back and forth betweeb BLT & Temptation

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

My only gripe with "Substance" is that it's not got the original versions of "Temptation" and "Confusion" on it. Are the originals available on CD at all? If not, why?

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Ceremony - no contest

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Rob, the 1981-1982 EP was released on CD in the late 80s in Europe, possibly only Germany. It's exceedingly rare, but the Retro box set has the originals version of "Temptation" if you're looking to get copies of all the tracks on CD. The rest are on Substance ("Everything's Gone Green", "Procession", "Hurt", "Cries & Whispers" aka "Mesh"). Retro also has the original version of "Confusion", but not the 4:30 edit.

Favorite track on Substance, I don't think I could call it, but I'd probably go with "Ceremony".

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

See, I just needed a reason to buy "Retro" and you've just given it to me. Thank you!

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Disc 1: "Everything's Gone Green" (although "Temptation", "Subculture" and "True Faith" equal it)

Disc 2: "1963"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the version of "Subculture" and I think I'm the only one who does. "True Faith" might be the greatest song ever written. "Blue Monday" definitely has the best intro of any piece of recorded music in history. I think that intro is worth its own thread almost. (re threads, here's a critical mis-step for the ages! "'BLue Monday'...bonus track on the cassette - too bad it's such a zomboid example of bleached disco" - from 'Creem' review of 'PC&L'. Then again, maybe after witnessing Orgy etc the guy is vindicated)

dave q, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

'Mesh' on Substance is actually 'Cries and Whispers'. The CD 1981/82 EP has the same mis-titling. So the only way to get the real Mesh (I could be wrong here) is the Factory Benelux Everything's Gone Green 12", which I think was also released on CD briefly in 1990. This has EGG and both C+W and Mesh.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Egg, BLT, they should have just opened a sandwich place.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Hang on there a second, I'm a bit confused now. My old vinyl copy of "81-82" has "Cries and whispers" on it, and my CD of "Substance" has "Mesh" on it, and they are totally different songs. So surely I'm happy in the knowledge that I've got all the songs from the "EGG" EP? Or am I happy in ignorance?

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought I had this straight Rob, now I'm confused. Maybe you could check. Do you have the EGG 12" too?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

You could feed a family of 6 with a 12" egg!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't, unfortunately, but I'll have to dig around tonight and sort it out once and for all. It's been a long time since I played the "81-82" mini-LP but I'm convinced that they are different songs. I did have the cassette of "Substance" as well at one point and that had both tracks on it.

Gosh, now I've looked that that definitive Factory discography site and I'm even more confused. The '81-82' track is called "Mesh" timed at 3:02, then on the "EGG" 12" "Mesh" is timed at 3:25, with "C+W" timed at 3:02.

My head hurts, and I need to go home and play the records themselves to clear this one up.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Incidentally, a co-worker has just described New Order as "a dodgy forerunner to house, but not really credible music".

Thought you'd enjoy that one.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's try to guess his age. I say .. 27.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

A few years younger. He likes Limp Bizkit.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, actually, just asked him, he's 26.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Aside from Confusion and Temptation, are all the other Substance songs the same as the original 12" versions?

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the version of "Subculture" and I think I'm the only one who does.

It's my second fave track on the album, Dave....largely thanks to Mr.Hook's bass bit at exactly 4:09

In the End you Will Submit it's...GOT TO HURT A...
GOT TO HURT A...
GOT TO HURT A LITTLE BIT!

When Hook brings in the bass-whomp after the sequenced drum break, it's an emotionally reasonant, cathartic rush akin to the fruition of a decade of scheming to avenge a life cursed by unrequited love. Gorgeous genius.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I literally cannot pick just one. Temptation, Blue Monday, True Faith, Perfect Kiss, Bizarre Love Triangle all get look-ins.

It's still the most perfect New Order comp yet.

Citizen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Rob - that fits in with what I said - The 81/82 Mesh is actually C&W. Check 'em tonight mate!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not saying anything until I've listened to my records tonight, to be honest.

Rob M (Rob M), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"Blue Monday", obviously

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Rob, re: Retro, here's an *ahem*-- shameless plug-- overview of my thoughts.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It has been and always weill be "True Faith", the cause of a true epiphany aboard an airplane at age eight.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, actually, just asked him, he's 26.

Hm. Kill him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

...drat you, *cis. XDXD had to point me to this thread, didn't you? couldn't let me free from the excellent and entertainingly procrastinatory clutches of ILM, could you?

too many to choose from. i'll go with first instinct for the moment and say "Face Up." cos no one else has so far. and i've said before and will say again, the absolutely psychotic glee in Barney's voice during "your hair was long, your eyes was blue...guess what I'm gonna DO TO YOU!!!!" and the instrumental break right after that is what pushes it up and over the edge.

incidentally, a friend of mine with quite a bit of spare time on his hands put together a rather interesting mix of "Temptation" and "Face Up" played over one another. cos, y'know, essentially cribbing from themselves.

also, when listing the songs most listed above, i notice some people didn't mention which versions of things they preferred. TPK is a brilliant song, but the truncation of it on Low-Life is nothing short of sinful.

...in another vote for Retro, the pink noise morel mix of "True Faith" that's on it is sublime. :)

also, i'm 25. in case anyone wondered.

janni (janni), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is the alternate universe where "Face Up" is on _Substance_ (and can we introduce an unstable singularity into it so it collapses upon itself)?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Blimey a few controversies in yr review Chris :

*rancid demo-quality original recording of temptation* - WHAT?

*"Ceremony" is poorly mastered compared to its prior edition, saddled by clipping and a digitally compressed, flattened low-end; sonic depth is sadly sacrificed for the sake of volume normalization and increased presence*

Ah - I get the picture. You're a *hi-fi buff*. Oh no.

Some good points about what was left off - Thieves Like Us should be there. It's a different way of doing a box - didn't really work, but it's a lovely thing to own.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that age is important at all. I just thought someone who made the statement "a dodgy forerunner to house, but not really credible music" MUST be around 27.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

...and evidently, still have not mastered the fine art of reading the entire title of the thread before posting. XD

you can, er, scrap bits of my post just above as a result. XD

...off of Substance, tough tough call. the sped up version of "Ceremony" is nice, although i vastly prefer the vocal from the original version. tough. "The Perfect Kiss" is utterly sublime. the redone-but-not-yet-TOO-redone version of "Temptation" is gorgeous and an interesting contrast to the versions that went before. also vastly superior to "Temptation '98," or whatever it's officially called.

i do like a lot of the b-sides included on the 2nd disc, though. "Hurt," for instance. "Lonesome Tonight" is also gorgeous and might just win. and yes, "1963." the "Thieves Like Us" instrumental is also good, and more than partially because of my uberdorkily enjoying Barney saying "Come in" more than one really should.

very tough indeed.

janni (janni), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Disc 1-"Blue Monday"
Disc 2-"In A Lonely Place"

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

That vocal bit in "Subculture" that Alex described above drove me nuts the first time I heard it, but now it's great. BLT is probably still my fave, but so many others come close.

Haha I like how no one has mentioned a single positive word for "State of the Nation"! (it has a cool drum pattern)

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I like how no one has mentioned a single positive word for "State of the Nation"!

My least fave of the bunch.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

the same friend who did the "Face Up"/"Temptation" mash also edited a version of "State of the Nation" that he could find listenable---one completely without lyrics, with the instrumental bits looped around where necessary to form something resembling the length of the original song and sounding a zillion times better. ;)

there, that's positive, isn't it?

*halos*

janni (janni), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The same exact song minus the chorus would be listenable. The guitar bits in particular are actually pretty good.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I love "State Of The Nation" unapologetically; I just think the other _Substance_ tracks are better.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

everything's gone green which incidentally has my favorite new order artwork, too.

no blt here, i'm a vegetarian.

disco stu (disco stu), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I love "State of the Nation", especially the "OOH" parts. I even love the "Sub-culture" remix on Substance that a lot of people (even Peter Saville, who made the single Spinal Tap black) hate...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

has to be "lonesome tonight" mostly because substance 87 is the only place you can find it (aside from retro)

one good thing about retro is that it provides the following in the liner notes:

CRIES AND WHISPERS

Steve :
Cries and Whispers is a great revelation because everyone thinks it's called Mesh. But it isn't. It was mislabelled in 1987 and nobody ever noticed.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

if i try and pick one my brain will explode

kephm, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.niagara.edu/neworder/video/ts.html

This performance was better than anything they actually released during the early years. You will think I am a mentalist, but their first LP and the early singles will make a whole lot more sense once you see this.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

..looking at the title list for taras...

goddamn I love how factory cant even properly label their cds/videos etc.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

temptation, all the way.

sublimely perfect with barney's falsetto, the chorus, and the rage and fury of stephen's drums. if new order had never played another note again--but thank god, they did--this would still be the greatest song of all time.

fiofio (fiona), Thursday, 13 November 2003 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

And now... OK, I went and played "81-82" last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, "Mesh" on there is probably the real "Mesh" as it's not the "Mesh" on "Substance", and it's been a long time since I've heard it. And then to flip the LP over and hear the original "Temptation" again after so long... demo quality? Get stuffed! It's just the quality of the synths they were using in 1982 - admittedly home built ones - and the charming naivete of the sounds used. I love it, and my cats thought I was totally mad bouncing around the room to it. The "Substance" re-recording comes nowhere near the joy, the passion and the sheer charm of the '82 version.

Rob M (Rob M), Thursday, 13 November 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! Yr totally OTM Rob! I listened to Temptation last nacht too. I love the way the 12" fades in as if in a parallel Factory universe it's been playing for ever...

Good, I was right about Mesh/C&W then. My brane is still kind of working.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 13 November 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The "Substance" re-recording comes nowhere near the joy, the passion and the sheer charm of the '82 version

completely agree. i remember when "substance" came out and there was a lot of hate for the rerecording of "temptation". i didn't really get it at the time, but now it makes perfect sense. it's a shame what they did to "blue monday", too (the 1988 remixes).

i want to see that "taras shevchenko" video!

disco soup (disco stu), Thursday, 13 November 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Taras Shevchenko was added to one of the recent UK DVDs, a much clearer copy than I ever had. Really raw stuff from the NYC dates, furious energy. Unlike Pumped Full of Drugs, the deflated Japanese tour film from '85 saved by a killer rendition of "As It Was When It Was".

As far as my comments on "Temptation" in the Retro review, I got a load of shit for that, and as far as the...not "elitist" but "spotter" DJs and club-goers/record-buyers go, it was deserved. Most of their early beat stuff I love-- "Hurt", "Everything's Gone Green", "586"-- but "Temptation" always seemed like unfulfilled potential to me, a bit flat. The Substance rerecording is the glossier version I hear trying to get out of that original version. But in terms of credibility, yes, the 1981-1982 version is what you're supposed to spin. No hard feelings I hope.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Thursday, 13 November 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Reprazent is Roni Size not New Order, grandad.

Jus' A Rascal! Dizzee Rascal!!, Thursday, 13 November 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with the praise for Taras Shevchenko. I generally hate live music videos, but I prefer the performances of the last four or five songs on this to almost anything off their first three albums.

This is the dvd it's now available on:

Ah yes, 316.

http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00004Y3PC.02.MZZZZZZZ.jpg

Haven't watched it yet as I need to buy that pesky all-region player. Got the US ed. of 511, Barney's a whale.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Thursday, 13 November 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Got the VHS and the quality was indeed pretty pooe, so it might be a good idea to invest in this

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Thursday, 13 November 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

ten months pass...
Heartening to read this thread and notice so many sensible listeners choosing "Bizarre Love Triangle" and "Temptation" and "True Faith".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

temptation

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Temptation".

The Good Dr. Bill\ (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"True Faith" is possibly one of the 500 best songs ever written.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

For purely subjective reasons, Temptation. It's what made me fall in love with them. Still gives me chills and makes me feel 15.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
The bulk of the tunes are each classic in some way.

However, I find "True Faith" to be positively transcendent. It's probably due as much to when and how I first heard the song, but its one of those songs that re-wired my brain the first time I heard it.

Edward Bax, Sunday, 24 October 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

For purely subjective reasons, Temptation. It's what made me fall in love with them. Still gives me chills and makes me feel 15.

-- roxymuzak (emilysu...), September 16th, 2004.

OTM. I can't think of any other song that would put a smile on my face after having split up with someone and confort me in thinking that life's gonna be ok, still.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Sunday, 24 October 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Thieves like us. Stately.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 24 October 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

is it too late to say "lonesome tonight", probably my favourite song of all time ever?

no? good.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Funny, grimly, as I was just going to say "Tempation" from Disc 1 and "Lonesome Tonight" from Disc 2. Both are undisputably classic. (Also, I love that Interpol cribbed "Lonesome Tonight" for "Evil" off their new album...)

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

PROCESSION.PROCESSION.PROCESSION.PROCESSION.PROCESSION...should have been on disc 1 though, technically speaking.

biznotic, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I love that Interpol cribbed "Lonesome Tonight" for "Evil" off their new album...

am listening again ... yeh, you're right, but ... well, they haven't made a very good job of it, have they?

now here's an obscure reference. when i were a very wee lad, arse-end of the seventies, i had a two-cassette set of peter pan, read by the dotrice family and set to music. being a sentimental little sod, i used to weep buckets at the end of it: partly because of the end of the story, which moved my four-year-old soul, and partly because of the music, which throbbed and swelled ...

... and - i'm now sure - sounded exactly like the ascending synth in the long coda of lonesome tonight. it would have been more than ten years between me hearing the peter pan thing and hearing lonesome tonight, but i made the connection in my head straight away.

problem is, this is all based on conjecture. we can't find the sodding peter pan tapes now so i can't check. but, 26 years on, i'd love to hear it again.

the perfect kiss is one of the few songs where its capacity to give me the chills has not been diminished by more than a googolplex of replays.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Thursday, 28 October 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I love that Interpol cribbed "Lonesome Tonight" for "Evil" off their new album...)

Haven't heard that one yet. 'course, there's always the Wilco song where they borrow the melody to "Love Vigilantes" at the end..

three years pass...

I say we revive this -- and I wish it were a poll.

If I were asked right now, I'd probably say "True Faith" myself -- produced by the much-reviled Stephen Hague, it's very close to the perfect pop song, though "Thieves Like Us," "Perfect Kiss" coming in tied for second with "Shellshock" not far behind (tho I suspect that won't win me many friends here). But I am conflicted about this choice in that while it's the best song on the collection, perfect pop isn't quite what New Order "did" exactly.

Part of me still feels like as towering as this collection obviously is, it also reveals their shortcomings a bit more than, say, Technique, which is pretty much flawless from both a production and songwriting standpoint.

the only real "shortcoming" I can hear is awful single mixes of great album tracks (e.g. "Subculture" w/the godawful backup singers)

"Thieves Like Us", bnut pretty much equal love for "True Faith", "The Perfect Kiss", "Bizarre Love Triangle" and, yes, "Lonesome Tonight" is amazing!

Should have been a poll, but "Blue Monday" obv.

Confusion!

The LP is only disc one, though, so I haven't heard the others for years (the tape had them on). I used to like 1963.

From the discussion above, NO's discography is much more confusing than I realised. I REALLY want to hear that earlier version of Temptation.

Jamie T Smith, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 11:07 (eighteen years ago)

SUBCULTURE! Mostly because it's the song most improved from its album mix.

i find a lot of the material on 'substance' a chore to listen to

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure what it is -- I didn't really "grow up" w this record like some in these parts.

But as satisfying as Substance is on several levels, I'm still finding a lot of it hamstrung by its 80s production values -- drum machines that lack texture, sequences and programs that tend to plod rather than enervate.

Dan Selzer has said elsewhere on ILM that some of that can be attributed to NO's modernist tendencies -- the band's willfully crude use of sampling, etc. I respect his opinion and he knows a shit ton more than I do about New Order.

But while that definitely applies to records like Technique, I don't think it does to Substance, where there's really not much of a justification for it -- it's not like you're hearing the ex-Joy Division guys reveling in primitive synthesizer technology on, say, "Shellshock" or even "Perfect Kiss" (which on many levels I really love, btw). Often, you're hearing remixes done by other people and sounds (digital bongos, synth blasts) that went the way of the dodo for good reason. Regardless, in a lot of cases, they're simply not being deployed with much creativity or even a charming naivety.

Yes, a HUGE part of New Order's appeal is their willingness to embarrass themselves -- My I've arguedmore bands should do it today, because it creates a tension that modern production values (and their accessibility to anyone with a computer) tend to relieve. But I think there's a pretty good case to be made (on Substance anyway) it's not always occurring on purpose...and not always that appealing either.

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure what you're saying, Matthew – the songs are mostly great; too bad the production's crude?

Also: "the much-reviled Stephen Hague"?? By whom? Neil Tennant made the pithiest remark about "True Faith": NO tamed, beautifully, by Stephen Hague. The best new song ever recorded for a comp?

Substance has two moments I hate: the '87 remix of "Confusion" which everyone but me prefers to the starker, hookier, cool original; and the "Subculture" remix. Otherwise it's next to godliness.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

btw I'm delighted you've come around to Technique.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

disc 1 is dang solid (let's just not think about "Shellshock"/"State Of The Nation" cuz frankly there's really no reason too)

Agreed that "Shellshock" & "State of the Nation" are both dire

WTF PEOPLE

"Shellshock" is my favorite. seriously :-(

stephen, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

the first two minutes of "Shellshock" – vulgar, improvisatory, thrilling – contain everything I love about New Order.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

Not a fan of that "Confusion" remix either -- in large part b/c I just don't like the punterish "CONFUSION!!!"

The songs are mostly great -- and when the production works ("Thieves Like Us" comes to mind), it works really well. But a lot of the time, it comes off less crude--which I can respect--than generic, which I can't. Tossed off, almost. And there's aspects of that strewn throughout Substance -- from great songs ("Perfect Kiss," which is almost prog in its structure) to crappy ones ("State of the Nation").

As for Hague, there's a lot of crap said about him in another thread -- in large part b/c of Republic, I think.

And as noted above, I love "Shellshock."

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

I also hate the "Confusion" remake, the "Temptation" remake, the "Subculture" remix, and the "State of the Nation" single entirely. Everything else is godhead, but if I were discovering them today (like you, Matthew), I would buy that Singles comp before Substance.

YES, I know you get all the cool B's with Substance, but on Singles you get all the originals, plus "Procession" in its rightful place of the running order, and the mastering is far far far far better.

In retrospect, I should have told you to hold off and buy that, Matt, but I seem to recall you didn't pay much for Substance anyway, and it wouldn't be a trip to Cleveland if you didn't come home with some used CDs, would it?

hutlock, Thursday, 15 November 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

OH, and if I had to pick a favorite -- "Thieves Like Us" by a nose.

hutlock, Thursday, 15 November 2007 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

<i>I also hate the "Confusion" remake, the "Temptation" remake, the "Subculture" remix, and the "State of the Nation" single entirely.</i>

Even having only got into this over the last month, I pretty much agree with this entirely.

Disc 1 best single-artist comp ever?

Mule, Thursday, 26 September 2013 16:21 (twelve years ago)

four years pass...

so last night in a state of booze enhancement, i ordered the 2cd edition of substance.
my original experience of this comp was a cassette edition that i believe was different.
however, my question is : are there massive volume differences between tracks ?
i ordered via amazon and so got a nice and lovely free mp3 edition.
but, damn, the volume levels between certain tracks is insane (confused > lonesome tonight being the most noticeable).
is this just part of the release, or, once i have the cd edition will these differences level out ?

mark e, Friday, 15 December 2017 21:22 (eight years ago)

probably some of the mp3s are taken from remastered (and much hotter) greatest hits that have been release since substance, and the quiet ones are taken from the original substance release. the CD won't be like that.

To quote a non-ILX friend who would absolutely know:

It’s coming. Announcement tomorrow. The 4th disc is a show from Irvine Meadows in 1987 where they played Substance in order, and has long been one of my favorite bootlegs.

It indeed being a fancy edition of Substance. Not sure what the third disc has yet.

Was listening to my old vinyl copy of this last night and marvelling that it was out of print (and commanding silly money. One of the most iconic compilations of all time! Wild.

Re OP question. The vinyl answer is Thieves Like Us, and the CD answer is the instrumental version of Thieves Like Us.

Incidentally though I do wonder if its true format is the double cassette in the wide box?

So presumably, from its lack of inclusion on a bonus disc, The Perfect Kiss is the full 12" version this time (maximum length of CDs being greater than it was in 1987). Maybe they should have included the edit with 44 second cut off as a rarity on the other discs, lol.

Alba, Thursday, 14 September 2023 13:08 (two years ago)

(I would like to note at this point that Irvine Meadows was in fact in, you know, Irvine and not San Bernadino.)

The first NO show I saw was in 1985, at the now-defunct Rainbow Music Hall in Denver. It consistently comes up in tour lists and setlists as "Boulder," which of course is another town entirely and not really close enough for confusion.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 14 September 2023 13:55 (two years ago)

And picking my favorite track off of this comp is like picking my favorite child. That said, I'll go with "True Faith" just because it was released with the original version of this comp.

I kind of think they should have put Touched by the Hand of God on it - last Factory single, same year and always feels like the end of that chapter to me. Plus there's a good rare mix of it, I seem to recall.

Alba, Thursday, 14 September 2023 19:14 (two years ago)

What am I talking about, "last Factory single"?? Last err.. standalone Factory single.

I would allow it on a bonus disc but Substance 1987 ending with True Faith is perfect and essential.

(On a related note, Standing On A Beach should end with the single mix of Close To Me, and the CD tracklisting that includes A Night Like This is monstrous)

meat and two vdgg (emsworth), Thursday, 14 September 2023 19:58 (two years ago)

We have an answer from 50poundnote (aka the person behind the Recycle blog some time back):

TBTHOG 12” will be released alongside State Of The Nation and Bizarre Love Triangle with the Brotherhood definitive box next year. Yes, it’s out of order, but all the Salvation! Soundtrack material will be in that box, and that’s where TBTHOG originated. All this info comes directly from the archivist.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 September 2023 20:06 (two years ago)

It doesn't have anything to do with Substance though and I feel it would interrupt the integrity of the boxset.

Also it aint all that.

kraudive, Thursday, 14 September 2023 20:06 (two years ago)

First person i ever heard say Thieves Like Us was their favourite song? Jason Donovan, in an interview with Smash Hits in '89. He was holding up Substance on vinyl in the accompanying photo.

Touched by The Hand of God is one of the weaker singles (I like it, but its pleasures are more subtle).

deep wubs and tribral rhythms (Boring, Maryland), Thursday, 14 September 2023 21:07 (two years ago)

And, if they want to make a "2 Substance" then they can start with "Touched ..." and carry on from there.
