Which one is that? Explanation, please!!

Well, they sound like a second-rate Clipse. That I Got That (Boom Boom) song is horrible. The rest of it is fairly good, except for a few really good bits.

Counting the number of writers on each track is repulsive. Do people do that to Kylie or Sugababes? (I haven't noticed..) The best song on Britter's last album, "Anticipating" very clearly displayed that Britney's quite a decent lyricist, so I'm inclined to believe she has quite a large amount of writing input. (so there, Geir!)

britney's abandoned track w/ the dfa is the best thing she's ever done -- they fucked up by not tossing it on this album (which is very disappointing, the album i mean).

Maybe she's, you know, kicking it old school. "Who Shot JR?" would have been such a better name for the record. Can't you just see her in a cowboy hat, sitting behind a desk?

I think my time here is through with this site. THAT SONG SUCKS.

I like the way Beyoncé spins gold dust out of nothing in "Naughty Girl" - that song is so insubstantial (what verses? what chorus? what tune?), but she makes it magnificent.

Possibly not because they were bad ballads (well, "Daddy" was awful) but just because there were SO MANY of them. I don't think I gave it enough of a chance - I thought Stripped was bogged down by its ballads for ages as well, but they've mostly grown on me.

Christina is a capable vocalist, definitely, but I think her material doesn't showcase that at all. She also tends to pigeonhole herself into just one style.

As far as Beyonce goes, well, I might ruffle a few feathers, but, speaking WITHOUT reference to my opinion of quality of music as a whole and strictly speaking on talent, I was never real impressed with any of Destiny's Child.

They're average to good singers, but not much special, and unfortunately that includes Beyonce. Her voice tends to fall short of what she attempts to do quite often. Not bad, but nothing I'd crow over.

Britney, on the other hand, can't sing at all :)

Eh? Really? One criticism I've seen levelled at Stripped is that she's trying to do quite a lot of things at the expense of a defining style.. which I agree with in every way other than that it is worth criticism, variety and experimenting being rather good things.. except Stripped also left me very, very cold.

Yeah, it's definitely my favorite song on the album. I'm not a fan of Linda Perry ballads anyway so that killed that one for me, "Beautiful" only just survives due to the glam-descend Jim Steinman chorus.

Also, Crazy in Love >>> Baby Boy, although I do love that song as well. I don't see how you'd be distracted by Jay-Z but not Sean Paul, esp. since Sean Paul has such a larger presence on Baby Boy!

I think Christina kinda sucks, but I've only heard the singles (which I thought kinda sucked). "Beautiful" was maudlin, and "Dirrty" was a third-rate Redman/Sermon cut. Fukkit.

I typed "Britney" in one of the paragraphs instead of "Christina" and stopped to fix it and didn't know the first alreayd went through.

Uh, wouldn't saying that actually bolster your case, as opposed to saying you had never heard it?

I mean why am I going through the trouble of arguing this, since it would point out that I've heard enough of her music before to comment on it, inferring I might be one of her "fanboys".

I'm not "cracking", either. I've always respected Christina's talent, but I still think her music just beyond sucks.

It's weird how it's developed in its suckitude, too.

She started out a pretty clean-cut (alright, I am strictly referring to the album, at least, that Genie in a Bottle appeared on) almost adult-contemporary artist at times singing pure untainted generic by the numbers pop.

When Stripped came out, she became a down and dirty somewhat clubby type of "sleaze" artist.

I judge Stripped by that song too. Any "variance" in her style is really subtle to me. Most all of the songs one would consider "different" still fall in the same umbrella, to me.

Her "image" is much more schizophrenic and contradictory than Britney's at any given point at time.

But in and of itself it's not automatically fascinating, a very obvious point of course. In my own case, I feel about her image, or whatever the word is, much the same way I feel about Eminem's -- ie, not really interested, more exhausted.

(Stripey was planning a wonderful study of Stripped at one point, though, which I want her to complete one of these days. Let me see if she's still interested in revisiting it.)

Is she even working on a third album? I mean I assume so.

"The Voice Within" is a by the numbers ballad, nothing more, the likes of which she has done a million times. It does not stand out at all. And there are other such ballads on the same album, such as "Beautiful". I can't imagine the lyrics are too insightful on either one, either.

But these ballads really fall under the same pop umbrella to me. While they do not possess the sleaze and danceability of the rest of the songs on the album, they still fall under the same contrivances as the other songs on the album, and sonic similarities in the style of the songwriting, even if the intensity is different.

It's still generic pop either way you look at it. I'm not saying an artist needs to change genres on each track to be considered eclectic either, but merely throwing ballads on an album with dance tracks doesn't make one "deviant" at all, especially since that's become the norm.

See, this is one example where Perry and X-Tina's reach exceeded their collective grasp. "That Sugababes song isn't Hispanic enough! They sing like they're too bored to sing! Let's remove all the pop fun and charm and programming-meets-traditional aspects and see if we can get this onto the s/t of Once Upon A Time In Mexico!" Overblown, bludgeoning, unattractive.

For a make-over that works, 'Breathe On Me' by one B. Spears gets one over on Kylie's 'Come Into My World' good and proper.

Have you heard the bootleg of "Yeah" and "Can't Hold Us Down"? It is the bomb.

I fail to see how having generic ballads on an album filled with trashy dance tracks makes an album eclectic at all.

But that's not what Xtina does. Even apart from the fact that genre-wise Stripped takes in goth-rock, hip-hop, dancehall, glam-rock balladry, swooning trip-hop, soul and Disney schmaltz (but done so well), the one thing that stands out about the album is its sheer scope - which ties in to Xtina's multiple image changes of course. It's like she wants to be everything to everyone, and actually tries to do this literally.

First of all, hip-hop of the variety that Christina performs isn't that far removed from dancehall music.

As far as glam-rock balladry, I wouldn't agree at all. It isn't as pretentious and showy as that whatsoever. It's really simplified, run of the mill pseudo-introspective "pop" that she has done, and other pop stars have done over, and over, and over again.

The problem is the material she sings is so run of the mill and boring, I don't think anybody could breathe life into it.

Christina is touring again this summer, so it's possible that Mr. Timberlake will go into the studio before she does. There was a quote from Timbaland somewhere saying that he and Justin were supposed to start work on the second solo album next month.

Back in 1987 it was a touch more outre.

Given the demeanor of Celtic Frost's music (aka, NOT 80's heavy metal, but blackened thrash...really depends on who you ask, those from the time period say thrash when revisionists seem to claim black metal), the cover was a bit left field.

As far as "dance hall music" I suppose I mean music you'd hear in a club.

for whoever decides to jump on that wavelength, realize I mean aka NOT stuff like Judas Priest as in straight "heavy metal".

Celtic Frost were underground legends, and much more extreme than that stuff. Their Hellhammer material is still regarded as cult, although I think someone actually bothered to re-release it. The darker nature of their music made the inclusion of such a cover a little "odd".

As Ned said, it wasn't quite as common in the 80s anyway.

Merely having songs that don't sound alike doesn't matter. The differences, to me, are subtle and fall under the same umbrella.

Of course it sounds completely different than her clean-cut almost Disney-ized sounding first album, but overall, I don't think within the album she covers a lot of ground. It's all still ultra-simplistic redundant pop.

But we're not going to agree on this. I'll also say that I think she's talented, but her music sucks. I admit I found "Dirty" catchy, but I'll look elsewhere for my music.

Jamelia does a couple of ace micro-R&B ballads on her album.

I listened to Jamelia's album in-store and it sounded like wall-to-wall gully nasty UK R&B - J.D run the track! - kinda stuff. Not sure if that is good or bad, I want to listen more though.

I'd like to write a piece on J.D. and his rapping ice-queen sirens, I think.

Jamelia's album has some embarrassing moments ("Beautiful Intelligent Talented Cool Honey - I'm a BITCH!" [girlish giggle]) but mostly it's solid enough Mis-Teeq-esque stuff (if Mis-Teeq took their cues exclusively from US R&B rather than UK garage). The highlights are the lush, swooning ballads like "Life" though. And I swear that if "Superstar" was re-released every summer it'd always be as popular.
