1. This is it! - Danni Minogue

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

2. Falling - Boom!

I remembered because of their exclamation mark. Weren't they meant to be the teenage UK garage hopes that UK garage never had? I bet you don't remember those cold pre-Blazin' Squad days.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno about 'garage', but they got featured in an NME Hot New Bands thing as token pop entry, then dissolved.

however, they did spawn Jonny Shentall, Most Superfluous Band Member Ever. (for his 'involvement' with the 'relaunched' Hear'Say)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Did they really make it into the NME? Cor blimey. I bought that single for 10 pence from the Record and Tape Exchange (or the Vinyl Exchange or MVE, or Mr CD, I can't remember).

What was Hear'Say's song after the first one where they all stood about in a fiery hall? I can't remember the first either, I keep thinking it is Never Ever.

3. BELFAST by Boney M.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

(Can you tell I saw some of 100 Worst Videos on Sunday).

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i remember that Dannii Minogue one well - absolutely hated it. 'Crazy Love' is another forgotten one by her (features the same string sample as 808 State's 'Lift') and one i prefer.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

actually i think it was 'Baby Love'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: Boom - yeah, they did, they were all cheeky in the interview in the manner to which manufactured pop types are accustomed to being.

Hear'Say's second one was:

4) Show Me The Way To Your Love

Now there's a pub quiz question for you (poss. because I heard it during a pub quiz, or maybe a FAP, I am unsure)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Were that her song when she was a goth?

IIRC, her goth song also featured her poncing about a beach, but this time it was in the dark and she was dressed like a poncy elf in a cloak.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

You are all mental. Dannii's best single is clearly Disrememberance.

5. Peach - On My Own. Never a hit anywhere, as far as I know, I bought it for 50c because I liked the orange cover.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Swiggit, that rings no bells at all!!

(5) PURE AND SIMPLE, that was it.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Dannii Minogue had a goth phase?

crumbs.

7. Hanging Around by Me Me Me

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

8. "Even When Your Eyes are Open" by Levitation. Final single, inexplicably derided, prior to Terry Bickers leaving the band.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

local record shops i went in always had about 20 copies of that Peach single

Diana King 'Shy Guy'
Ray Parker Jr 'I Don't Think That Man Should Sleep Alone'
3T ft Michael Jackson 'Why'
Brownstone 'If You Love Me'
Peter Andre 'Flava'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

9. "Street Tuff" by the Rebel MC

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

15. 'Be Together' - The Original. His follow-up single. Don't think it charted.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

10. "Karma" by Mysterious Art

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

'Street Tuff' was a minor hit in the States? i always remember it because i like to marvel how he went from that to 'The Wickedest Sound' and Enya-sampling 'Tribal Base'

Gordon Haskell 'How Wonderful You Are'

it was only two years ago

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It's one of the best singles of the 90s, that Peach one. A real lost classic. As is....

16. Cathy Dennis - Too Many Walls

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Shola Ama 'You Might Need Somebody'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve, I think I can remember almost all of your ones, excepting Parker Jr.

20) CJ Lewis - Sweets For My Sweet

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"have mercy mercy mercy" - !!! - Steve you git I will now have to come out tonight in order to harass people to play that song to gerrit out of my head.

I'd forgotten all of those songs apart from FLAVA. Marvellous.

Craig McLachlan - Mona (or Moira, or Maura, or Mary, or Madge, Mungo, Midge ect ect).

Did Men Without Hats have a follow-up to Safety Dance? I would say that but of course everyone remembers it.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think "Street Tuff" made even the slightest impact in the States. I only know of it from working with a deejay at the time who brought it into the office. "Tuff" wasn't really the first adjective that sprang to mind when listening to Rebel MC.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

22) Kula Shaker - Mystical Machine Gun

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

18. Blur - Ernold Same

Total twaddle. Terrible name that gave more than a passing nod to Pink Floyd's "Arnold Layne".

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Did Men Without Hats have a follow-up to Safety Dance? I would say that but of course everyone remembers it.

"Pop Goes the World"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Who remembers Duran Duran's cover of 911 IS A JOKE??

I certainly don't but I've heard of it and people assure me it's not a lie...

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I do. And I know someone else here on ILM certainly does.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Wills to be fair, i don't expect a single song to be mentioned that SOMEONE doesn't remember. hence...

The Supernaturals 'I Wasn't Built To Get Up At This Time'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"Where Was?" by Guthrie Handley & Wayne Hussey. Justifiably forgotten, actually.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned doesn't count.

Win - Freaky Trigger!!!! (I think Tico Tico played it to me once but I HAVE FORGOTTEN IT or was that the name of the album?)

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

however, they did spawn Jonny Shentall, Most Superfluous Band Member Ever. (for his 'involvement' with the 'relaunched' Hear'Say)

Jonny Shentall snuggles up to Groop Dogdrill and Lesley Garrett as Doncaster's prime contribution to all of pophistory ever. Rah!

5. Peach - On My Own. Never a hit anywhere, as far as I know, I bought it for 50c because I liked the orange cover.

fucking BRILLIANT, Ed triumphs again. Peach-boffins did some things of on Fever by Kylie but I forget exactly which.

27(?). Sinitta - Right Back Where We Started From

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I had forgotten about Shayne Carter until now - DUNEDIN TO THREAD!

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

any song suggested should have been a top 40 hit or equivalent

Boyzone 'A Different Beat'
Bad Boys Inc. 'Don't Talk About Love', 'Take Me Away'
Deuce 'Call It Love'
Kim Appleby 'G.L.A.D'
Worlds 'inexplicably big in France' Apart 'Everlasting Love'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve - true. And I don't really remember how the 3T one went, anyhow...

37. Northern Uproar - Anyway You Look

Northern Uproar in 'tune' shocker. Sort of.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"Talk to Me" by I am Siam

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm trying to remember if Soho had a follow up single to 'Hippy Chick' = i'm sure they did but can't quite remember how it went, or if i even heard it.

The Word is great for forgotten songs so think back to what you saw on that - If?! The Aloof! The Millionaire Hippies!

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Steven "Monkey Chops" Gateley's solo song after his coming out as a gayist. Needlessly to say I have forgotten the title, but thought that setting his video in a London park was throwing away his only hope of playing on his Oirish Heritage. Which was his only hope. He should have done a Riverdance.

Did it even Top Ten?

I love the way Smash Hits stopped calling him "Monkey Chops" after he came out as An Gay.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

are St Etienne the only band who can do this without always sounding trite?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, wrong thread

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

It was called New Beginning. About him having a New Beginning. Did not feature any men in the video, if I remember rightly (though I might not).

And it was about #5 or 6, I think.

On that topic -

41 - Mikey Graham - You're My Angel

(think that was his name - he was the least memorable member of Boyzone, anyway)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ian Brown 'My Star'

crashed into the top 5, then buggered off again double sharpish - don't recall it getting much airplay or mention in the weeks after

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i think Soho followed up "Hippy Chick" with the non-top-75-chartin SMASH that was "Love Revolution"

Lena Fiagbe - "Gotta Get It Right"

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah - "Freaky trigger" was the second album by Win, the title being a line from the second song on it, "Taboo". As always, I'll make my plea if anyone has got the first Win LP on CD - could I have a CD-R please? I had it once, lent it to someone 12 years ago and never got it back. And I miss it.

Rob M (Rob M), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Keith & Shane - Gurl U Kno It's Troo.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Lena Fiagbe - "Gotta Get It Right"

good choice! also, Efua's 'Somewhere'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

47. Prodigy - One Man Army

Or whatever the song they had to play on the Top 40 instead of Smack My Bitch Up was called. Think it was something like that though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Michelle Gayle - "Looking Up"

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Top novelty song DOOP by god knows who. "It's the Charleston with a Twist!".

I know A GOFF who goes by the screen name of "doop". I still can't think of it without laughing. I don't think he even knows. ARRRRRHAHAHAHAHAHHA.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahahah, I make a point of listening to DOOP at least once per week. Rednex?

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"Cadillac" by Gang of Four (off their universally derided Mall album).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Doop was by Doop - I have their album, might bring it along to Club FT...

52. Travis - More Than Us

Their best tune, probably, and first top 20 single.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I have the single of Efua's "Somewhere" somewhere steve. I think it was one of my first CD singles EVER and I possibly bought it from oxfam within a fortnight of it being released

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Sophie B. Hawkins - Don't Don't Tell Me No

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Sam Brown - Stop

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Lisa Loeb - that song that is always forgotten by me but remembered strangely by uuber-emo kids as apparently she has now done a song with Will Oldham. Whodathunkit?!

Sam Mitchell -... not really!

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Terry Hall - Chasing Rainbows
A House - Here Come The Good Times
Propaganda - Heaven Give Me Words

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, 'Stay'. Dom P to thread...

Oleta Adams - Get Here

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Dom P is such an emo kid.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex (in Doncaster): the Peach track on Fever is "Your Love".

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

EYC - Black Book

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Sinead Quinn - I Can't Break Down (destined to be the least remembered top 3 single of the year...)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Deuce 'Call It Love'

Oh oh oh, I didn't see this before. Better STILL were follow-ups "I Need You" (which was something Eurovision-y, although not actual UK entry) and big gothy slamdunk of "On The Bible" which Dale Winton liked very much when he was reviewing singles in TOTP magazine in August 1995.

Although, uh, clearly I haven't forgotten them. Dammit.

In keeping with very tenuous eurovision-ness:
Frances Ruffelle - "Lonely Symphony"

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

What about "Higher than heaven" by the regurgitated Age of Chance, without the shouty bloke from Leeds on vocals, but someone else in a soul vein. Strange 'un, that.

Rob M (Rob M), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought 'I Need U' WAS the Eurovision one Alex?

Oleta Adams - Get Here

used on a telly ad not so long ago tho

Nick Kamen!

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i remembered FINITRIBE the other day

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Argh, Frances Ruffelle. That was an 'experimental' year for UK Eurovision, because they had eight different songs to vote for... all of which were sung by her. She came about 12th or something, and is now starring in Chicago in the West End.

Berri - Sunshine After The Rain

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Aah, maybe it WAS. That would be 94? 95? Possibly it was one of the runner-up choices or something, I will check.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The winner was called something like Sink Or Swim. I have no idea about the year.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Betty Boo - I'm On My Way!
Ace of Base - Always Have, Always Wil

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

If it was 95 I think maybe that was the glorious year of LOVE CITY GROOVE!

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Cor, I own that Berri single. 25p from Greenwich Market! It's brilliant!

Someone print this thread off as a request list for Club FT tonight.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

That was Ace Of Base? I always thought it was someone else, though I dunno who.

Status Quo & The Beach Boys - Fun Fun Fun

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Betty Boo - I'm On My Way!

ED, so long as there is breath in my body I will NEVER desist from forcing people to recognise the innate glorious lostgenius of this. And "Hangover". And all of the parent album. Hurrah!, though.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Starry - I might just do that, but with one proviso -

Cast - Beat Mama

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Madonna - Dear Jessie (this is really good too)!! Does she have any other song abt pink elephants and lemonade?

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is making me say "glorious" too much

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

B*Witched - To You I Belong

Though that might have deserved it.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Uncanny Alliance - I Got My Education
Kym Sims - Take My Advice
Sunscreem - Secrets

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

K-Klass - So Right

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Zoe - Sunshine On A Rainy Day
Sebadoh - Flame (as seen on Top Of The Pops)
Silver Sun - Too Much Too Little Too Late
King Adora - Big Isn't Beautiful
Bitty McLean - Dedicated To The One I Love

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is making me say "glorious" too much

I'll give you a banana if you can name the guy who sang "Glorious".

NickB (NickB), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

China Black - Searching
Glowworm - Carry Me Home
Goldbug - Whole Lotta Love
Dog Eat Dog - No Fronts

Nick - Andreas Johnson. Everyone knows that, surely?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Crikey I'm aph34r3d of what I've created. Remember to leave the house tonight eh Swiggit? :)

Sarah (starry), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I shouldn't worry about that. I don't think I actually own many/any of these songs, oddly enough.

The Seahorses - You Can Talk To Me

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcella Detroit - I Believe
DNA - La Serenissima
Dr Alban - Sing Hallelujah!
Alison Limerick - Make It On My Own
Londonbeat - I've Been Thinking About You
Eternal - Crazy (the 6th single from their first album and rather bafflingly released about a fortnight after the fifth single from their first album, or something)

I concur that YES some of these were indeed justly forgotten. If not all of them.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I own the Dannii Minogue thread-genesis single in CASSINGLE form. She is squinting happily in a big hat on the front. It is yellow and blue and nice.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, Londonbeat - I've! Been! Thinnginggabow - Chooooooooo!

DJ Dee Kline - I Don't Smoke
Whigfield - Big Time
Shade Sheist - Where I Wanna Be
Emilia - Big Big World
Jason Downs ft. Milk - Cats In The Cradle

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned doesn't count.

Hey!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Since Alex mentioned Marcella Detroit..

Shakespear's Sister - Hello (Turn Your Radio On)

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Also -

Shakespear's Sister - I Can Drive

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahah, any single off that album that wasn't "Stay" would probably qualify. The ITV Chart Show used to forcibly shoehorn at least one Shakespears Sister video into the line-up every week during 1992, they so totally adored them. That one had PIGS.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Eternal 'So Good'
Jade 'I Wanna Love You Down'
Ralph Tresvant 'Sensitivity'
Jon Secada 'Just Another Day'
Samantha Mumba - anything
Billy Myers 'Kiss The Rain'
Paula Cole 'Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?'
Jennifer Paige 'Crush'
Joan Osborne 'St Theresa'
Scarlet 'Independent Love Song' (yeah yeah, forgotten, well remembered, whatever)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Encore - Le Disc Jockey (like Encore Un Fois, but different in some way that I can't quite remember. Think she shouts "Le DISC JOCK-EY!" instead of "EnCORE UN FOIS!")
Strike - I Have Peace
Moloko - Fun For Me
Maxim ft. Skin - Carmen Queasy
Clubhouse - Light My Fire
Wendy Moten - Come In Out Of The Rain

also - the entire recorded output of The Cosmic Rough Riders. They have had 4 top 40 singles, somehow.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i LOVE 'Encore Un Fois' - Sash! went to hell after that tho

where are Robert Miles and ATB now? oh that's right, we don't care

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Lucid 'I Can't Help Myself'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Belinda Carlisle - Lay Down Your Arms
Lisa Stansfield - Time To Make You Mine
49ers - Girl To Girl
Pauline Henry - Too Many People
Holly Johnson - Americanos
Sabrina Johnson - I Wanna Sing
Black Duck - Whiggle In Line

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Daphne & Celeste - Ooh Stick You!
SOAP - Ladidi Ladida
Dubstar - Not So Manic Now

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

(I am using combination technique of summoning long-buried mental images of various 1990-96ish-era singles review pages of Smash Hits while simultaneously leafing through 1994-vintage Guinness Book Of Hit Singles. What's YOUR trick?!!!!!111111)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Robert Miles ft. Maria Naylor - One And One (Fat Bob claimed it was originally written for Whitney Houston)
DJ Quicksilver - Bellissima
Dubstar - I (Friday Night)
Juliet Roberts - Bad Girls
Hepburn - Bugs
Catch - Bingo

I've just searched for Cappella on Everyhit.com. They've had eight hits, of which I can remember one, and only because I saw it on TOTP2 a little while ago.

Similarly, I can only remember two of Let Loose's seven hits.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

D&C and Dubstar are on constant rotation chez Doncaster. SOAP sound fantastic though, more more info please ed.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember 17 by Let Loose because my sister grudgingly liked them at the time and I think it entered the charts at number 17 on her 17th birthday which was the 17th of the month and at the time was, like, the very spooookiest coincidence of all time EVER.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

This plus the occasional bizarre linkage where one song triggers another one for no apparent reason.

Right Said Fred - Don't Talk Just Kiss
East 17 - Steam
Dreamworld - Movin 'Up

That SOAP single was a big hit over here, in the UK I think their only hit was This Is How We Party.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex - very, very misspent childhood. And Everyhit.com providing slight assist.

And you've just made me remember (sort of) how 17 goes. Bastidge.

Manchester United - We're Gonna Do It Again
Newcastle United - Black & White Army ("I wash my shirt so it's clean for the match/I've got my ticket to London - and a bit of cash")
Bamboo - Bamboogie
Ocean Colour Scene - It's A Beautiful Thing
Shed Seven - Bully Boy
Smokin' Mojo Filters - Come Together
The Beautiful South - Pretenders To The Throne

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Lithium ft Sonya Madan 'Ride A Rocket'

i love it of course

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i curse Alex for reminding me of Black Duck tho, haha!

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Stretch & Vern present Maddog - I'm Alive
Asian Dub Foundation - Buzzin'

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Lithium ft Sonya Madan 'Ride A Rocket'

i love it of course

I was SO just about to cite this record. And I love it too, not least for the Bow Wow Wow sample.

"Glad I'm Not a Kennedy" by Shona Laing

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

How many Shed Seven songs do we think could justly be included here? I seem to own about 9 of them on 7", and have not-faintest-clue how this came to pass.

Pretenders To The Throne makes me think of ITV-Chart-Show-late-1995 when they played that on loop with Enya's Anywhere Is and Disco 2000 nonstop also. More than anything this thread is making me feel impossibly cosy with the happy memories.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"Cuddly Toy" by Roachford
"`Cos I Said So" by the Godfathers

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

'Don't Falter' defies science by being both twee and GREAT

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Virtually everything that Ed lists is something I both cherish and play religiously and regularly. SOULMATES, clearly.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex - a lot of them, though I'd remember a fair few. On Standby is the most obvious candidate, I'd reckon. Though I might be the only person in the world who remembers Why Can't I Be You? from earlier this year.

Gay Dad - Oh Jim
Skunk Anansie - Secretly
Muse - Unintended
Wrecks n Effects - Juicy
Glass Tiger - My Town
Arnee And The Terminaters - I'll Be Back
Mr Bean ft. Screamin' Lord Sutch - Elected
Amy Grant - Baby Baby
Edwyn Collins - The Magic Piper

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, I refuse to include it here, but does anyone have a copy of that Q-Tee single from 1995? Long shot, i realise

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Electrasy - Best Friend's Girl
Bennet - Mum's Gone To Iceland

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Same person? Surely you don't also love....

Girl Thing - Girls On Top
Honeyz - End Of The Line

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Girl Thing had a second single?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Amy Grant! So, with benefit of hindsight: WAS her vid for Big Yellow Taxi a technicolour phantasmagorical masterpiece or really clunky and ropy?

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Same person? Surely you don't also love....
Girl Thing - Girls On Top
Honeyz - End Of The Line

Um, we're on slightly wobbly terrain now...

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't remember - I remember seeing it, but I dunno. The only things I remember were her smiling and walking, while looking upwards to the left.

Beverly Craven - Promise Me
Robyn - Show Me Love

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Amy Grant! Every Heartbeat is the best song ever!

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Skunk Anansie - Secretly

This was the total Celine one wasn't it? I say again: GLORIOUS

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bluetones - Autopia (Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love My Car)

Kingmaker - Ten Years Asleep
Elastica - Your Arse, My Place

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Opus III - When You Made The Mountain
OMD - Stand Above Me
Maria McKee - Sweetest Child
Sophie Lawrence - Secrets (released THREE TIMES, received a 1/5 review in Smash Hits THREE TIMES, never once made the top 75. Cover of the Kylie one offof Rhythm Of Love. Actually really great, she BELLOWED the chorus as I recall)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Snow - Informer

jadrenos (jadrenos), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenickie - Stay In The Sun
Pulp - A Little Soul
The Shamen - LSI

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Dear christ, In Your Car is one of the greatest singles in the history of recorded sound. This thread is not the place for Kenickie!

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Paradise" by Birdland

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Byron Stingily - Get Up (Everybody)
Ultrasound - Stay Young
Ultrasound - Floodlit World

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I will never forget. But, you're quite right. Dammit.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Ditto those Ultrasound tracks. And Pulp, obv.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

One day Kenickie will get their dues. One day.

Buffalo Tom - Going Underground
Undercover - Slip Away

The Grid - Texas Cowboys
Cicero - Love Is Everywhere
Cud - One Giant Love
Babylon Zoo - Animal Army
Everything But The Girls - Single
Belly - Now They'll Sleep (absolutely their best track everEVER, may be very wrong about this one)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Mansun - Legacy
Feeder - Suffocate (they didn't used to be that bad)
Super Furry Animals - Fire In My Heart

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Cicero! I was gonna mention him but I couldn't remember what his songs were...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck me, that was his only hit. I could've sworn he'd had more...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Menswe@r - Being Brave (why was this their top 10 hit?)

This entered the charts at no.10 the same week that Shed Seven went in at 8 with Going For Gold and Garbage in at 4 with Stupid Girl. CRAZY TIMES (I actually bought the latter two of these records. And still really like the Garbage, at any rate [I was playing french cricket on the patio with my brother while we listened. This is what I mean by COSY MEMORIES])

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Cicero also hit the top 46 with "That Loving Feeling", and the top 70 with "Heaven Must Have Sent You Back". Let's hear it for CICERO!

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

...which segues neatly into:

2wo Third3 - Hear Me Calling

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i remember ALL the Cicero hits too!

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Desireless 'Voyage Voyage'

Praise 'Only You'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Praise 'Only You'

I had indeed completely forgotten that this ever existed. I now remember vividly, it strikes me that it may be one of the greatest records of all time

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i've mentioned Made In London's 'Dirty Water' and Dream's 'He Loves Me Not' before

and i can't believe we've got this far without mentioning the mighty HEPBURN

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Nuh-uh. "Bugs" got mentioned upthread. I always loved Deep Deep Down.

Shara Nelson - Rough With The Smooth (#30? Good grief!)
Olive - Miracle (always preferred this to You're Not Alone)

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, imagine having sex to Praise's 'Only You'....

is it still the greatest record ever?

even when the whale bit comes in?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn your eyes

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i knew someone would say Olive's 'Miracle'

good call on Shara Nelson too - tho 'One Goodbye In Ten' may be a better single

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

who was that girl who did that song that went 'pack my bags and something thing...ride on into the next town'?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

But but but Shara Nelson! Uptight and One Goodbye In Ten totally so very absolutely YES

(x-post: i'm going to post this ANYWAY ner)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Imaani Coppolla! Legend Of A Cowgirl!

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

who was that girl who did that song that went 'pack my bags and something thing...ride on into the next town'?

Twas Imani Coppolla. Her follow-up single, I'm A Tree was much better. I saw her on an old episode of Jools Holland the other night.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

White Town - Undressed

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Mouth and MacNeil 'How Do You Do'

Dave Vinson (Gaughin), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I love this thread more than words can say.

booth and the bad angel - I believe
MN8 - I've got a little something for you
PJ & Duncan - stuck on you
corona - rhythm of the night
the bucketheads - the bomb (these sounds fall into my mi~i~ind)

cis (cis), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Babylon Zoo 'Animal Army' (in which he Jas 'yes i think we're nearly at the stage of writing spherical songs' Mann does a very passable Ian Brown) and 'The Boy With The X-Ray Eyes' (had an actually quite good if formulaic Goldie mix)

this thread has so happened before - and i am just repeating myself myself

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

but come now! who doesn't remember 'The Bomb'??

and MN8 is my 863rd favourite song ever

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Culturebeat 'World In Your Hands', 'Got To Get It'
Maxx 'Getaway'...but their follow up was so forgettable i actually can't remember it's name

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

That would maybe be "No More No More (I Can't Stand It)". and then "You Can Get It".

This HAS been done before, agreed. It's grrrrreat

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

jordan knight - give it to you
(I loved that song. I will never hear it again. I cry now.)

cis (cis), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Les Rythmes Digitalies - Sometimes (ah, my favourite video ever!)
Shampoo - Viva La Megababes

Just noticed the mighty SHIVAREE made #63 with Goodnight Moon. How cruel - it should have been massive.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

...Is the video to 'Sometimes' the one with the teddybear?

cis (cis), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh, and indeed, aww

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

good call on Jordan Knight too - better than owt by Timberchops, except 'Cry Me A River' maybe but that doesn't sound so good now compared to most of the stuff on this thread

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

pushing it a bit but...

E-Motion 'Naughty North Sexy South' (the TOTP performance featured the demonstration of north/south divide via pretty girls in appropriately denominated football kits)

and the follow up

'I Stand Alone'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Chicane 'No Ordinary Morning'

i think i (not so) secretly like this - sounds a bit like BOC but with slushy female vocals

stevem (blueski), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Tatjana - Santa Maria

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Off-Shore - I Can't Take This Power
Moist - Push
Oui 3 - Break From The Old Routine
Galliano - Prince Of Peace
S*M*A*S*H - (I Want To) Kill Somebody
Ten Sharp - You
Zig & Zag - Them Girls Them Girls

YES I am clutching at straws now

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd tried to erase NNSS from my memory, damn you.

does Baby D's "I need your lovin' (everybody's gotta learn sometime)" count? Cuz I'd sure forgotten it.

2 unlimited - let the beat control your body!

cis (cis), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never heard of any of that last lot of Alex's. Good thing?

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Unquestionably. Though the S*M*A*S*H single seemed very righteous at the time.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

K7 - come baby come
perfecto allstars - reach up

(yeah, I do have a collection of early/mid 90's NOW! compilations, why d'you ask?)

cis (cis), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"Wichita Lineman" by These Animal Men

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 8 December 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, Come Baby Come! I loved that when I was about 8.

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Monday, 8 December 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"Your Baby Never Looked Good In Blue," Expose

John Fredland (jfredland), Monday, 8 December 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

2 Cowboys - "Everybody Gonfi Gon"
Apache Indian - "Arranged Marriage"

Ben Dot (1977), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i own a disgusting amount of these records.

i nominate anything by Cud, esp "Prawn in whitby" and "Oh no won't do"

also Shakespear's Sister "you're history", their best song by a screaming mile

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

My Love Is the SHHH! by Somethin' for the People

reo, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I nominate the Thunderbugs. One of them was a physicist you know!!!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"Nover Comes" by the Hollow Men
"Psych Out" by the Seers
"Death Defying" by the Hoodoo Gurus

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Some great 80s songs that used to be hits, but are sadly not heard a lot these days

Kid Creole & The Coconuts: Annie I'm Not Your Daddy
Split Enz: I Got You
Men At Work: It's a Mistake
Robin Gibb: Juliet
Limahl: Too Much Trouble
Galaxy: Dancing Tight
Mick Karn & Midge Ure: After a Fashion
Ian Hunter: All Of The Good Ones Are Taken
David Sylvian & Ryuchy Sakamoto: Forbidden Colours
Visage: Damned Don't Cry
Bad Manners: Walking In The Sunshine
Dollar: Give Me Back My Heart
Yazoo: The Other Side Of Love

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Split Enz: I Got You
Men At Work: It's a Mistake

I wouldn't say either of these are particularly forgotten, being that they were both b-grade hits for both bands and regularly appear on 80's compilations and are in constant rotation on VH1 Classic.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i own quite a lot of these songs on cassingles (including the legendary jordan knight song, peter andre, CJ lewis, bitty mclean, 3T, tony rich)

my own nominations for best semi-forgotten songs from the 90s: 74 75- Connells, how bizarre- OMC, closer than close- rosie gaines, nanny in manhattan- lilys.

lid, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Official 'Popular' Forgotten UK No.1s Of The 1990s (i.e. ones that made me double-take and go 'what the fuck was that?' when I did my download binge)

Wet Wet Wet - Goodnight Girl
G Michael / Queen / Lisa Stansfield - Five Live EP
Tony Di Bart - Real Thing (mentioned on EVERY thread like this yet still I had forgotten him!)
Peter Andre - I Feel You
Boyzone - A Different Beat
LL Cool J - Ain't Nobody (more that it got to #1 than its very existence)
Gary Barlow - Love Won't Wait (this is surely the most forgettable, GB's second No.1 - who knew???)
Another Level - Freak Me (I vaguely remember this because of a funny Tanya entry though)
911 - Little Bit More (how does it go? I don't know, neither do you, neither does anyone who bought it I would guess, oh well, it's probably OK but amazingly nobody on Soulseek is sharing it)

Special mentions to Westlife whose ever-presence I remember all too well but whose songs escape me, and to Geri Halliwell all of whose songs I remember because I was a big enough fool to buy the album.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 11 December 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Was that the 911 single which rather unfortunately coincided with tremendous C4 boyband satire Boyz Unlimited? It was really great because the hilarious!ly bad fictional cover they featured in the programme was (by accident or design) the same track as 911 had just covered and released and the two records were identical. And I think it was maybe this one. NUMBER ONE though, christ.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 11 December 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

'Little Bit More' is a cover but i can't remember who did it first - it goes "and when your body's had all it can take blah blah floor, i'm gonna love you a little bit more" Boyz Unlimited was a good programme.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Salt n' pepa 'Do You Want Me'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

OMD 'Walking On The Milky Way' (terrible, except that it's SO close to 'All The Young Dudes') and 'Pandora's Box' which in hated at the time but is one of their more PSB-esque numbers and maybe due a re-assessment

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

R Kelly 'Your Body's Callin', 'Bump n' Grind', 'Summer Bunnies'
Changing Faces 'Stroke You Up'
Smooth 'Mindblowin'

and did someone say N-TYCE and CLEOPATRA?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Swygart earns kudos for recalling EYC - they had at least one other 'hit' in 'The Way You Work It'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember OMD "Sailing on the seven seas" (Is milky way a different song?)

Mainly cause i once wrote a song that had "I'm so in love with you that I dont know what i do" as a strap line.

But instead of "and I'm sailing on the seven seas so blue" I had "I walk head first into a tree yeah"

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ Stevem, all this time and I never twigged the "Walking on the milky way" / "All the young dudes" connection.

Did "The rock" by Delakota get anywhere near the charts?

Rob M (Rob M), Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

All-4-One: "I Swear"

This song was virtually everywhere for a few months in 1994, but then... nothing. According to AMG, All-4-One have released 5 LP's, but has anyone ever heard any of them?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 11 December 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

possibly but i have real trouble remembering ANY Delakota song and indeed may never have even heard one (i'm pretty sure i have tho as ex was a big fan of them)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

New Atlantic 'I Know'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

what about that terrible 'Madness Thing' song by whoever it was?

also, Lolly

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

haha the 11th & 24th greatest NZ songs of all time have been nominated on this thread!

etc, Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i forgot about The COurse (Ibeefery covers of Fugees 'Ready Or Not' and also 'Ain't Nobody')

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

3T! nephews of jacko! Did they do 'Anything', or was that someone else? Easily confused with All-4-One, 'I Swear' holds record for most-consecutive-weeks-at-number-2-in-UK-charts-without-getting-to-number-one, 7 weeks during the long drownsy summer of 'Love Is All Around'.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the track 3T did with Jacko was approaching decency but all else was cack

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread has so happened before - and i am just repeating myself myself

Quite right (forgotten/understated 'classic' pop songs of the 80s and 90s I can't post links I can't post links). Let's make an annual event of it
