Mogwai 'Happy Songs for Happy People'

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

All of them (except the ones I like).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

haha Ned OTM

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Let me clarify a bit. 'Albums that people are always going on about, but you don't think are anything special at all. So the mere mention of that album annoys you.'

Like that.

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

dizzee rascal

playstation beats with fred durst flows

, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Dizzee seconded.

Drive-by Truckers.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

hate threads suck.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Dizzee definitely. The Streets, too.

And the grandaddy of 'em all: Bright Eyes

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

they're always populated by alex in nyc arguments and even more ridiculous hyperbole than the love threads.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

2/3 of yours are from '02.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

my bad, quickly forgot about the '03 part

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

or they're just lists of albums.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Worse than hate threads: hating on hate threads

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, that's clever!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

you should be a music critic, totally.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

hate thread haters suck

It's good to vent.

But I'll certainly take it personally when someone hates something I love. Hating is a hateful business.

I only started this thread, because I hate that Mogwai album.

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

man, I got beat to that hate haters hate thing.

However, I have yet to notice a poster here who has a right to be self-righteous.

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, where will all the hate end.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate everything is so a couple of months ago

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

just ask any new zealander

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

what?

damian_nz (damian_nz), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

ot: dizzee thirded

damian_nz (damian_nz), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

'I hate everything' was pretty much yesterday for me. But it wasn't really music related

The thing I hate most is spending $18 for a CD. That's the source of my most acute hate. I don't really hate any album that I didn't buy.

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never spent $18 on a CD (barring import or something rare). For the first time in memory, every CD I purchased this year - too, too many - was good, thanks to file-sharing. The only duds that I purchased - Ryan Adams two new CDs and Northern State's EP were because I bought them blind.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

You've never spent $18 on a CD? How do you pull that off?

Yeah, downloading a few tracks to check them out is a good approach. Increasingly I do that as well. However, there was a time when I might buy something simply based on a review. Imagine that! Who writes those things? Oh yeah, you guys do.

I'm bitter. I wrote three emails to record companies last week complaining about copy protection on CDs. I got 0 replies.

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

If something's priced more than $14-15 (single CD) at whatever record store I'm at, I'll find it at a chain store (Best Buy) or order it online for $12-13.

(Ich bin nicht reviewer/writer.)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

If something's priced more than $14-15 (single CD) at whatever record store I'm at, I'll find it at a chain store (Best Buy) or order it online for $12-13.

I'll wait two or three weeks and find a used or promo copy for half the price.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Dizzee Rascal for sure. Drive by truckers for sure. Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The Books.

D Aziz (esquire1983), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yo mama

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I never understood what was so great about Ryan Adams, this year or any other year. Also: the new moustache rock (Kings of Leon, My Morning Jacket, Drive-By Truckers).

Nick Mirov (nick), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

With the pointed exception of "Maps," I don't see what's so great about the Yeah Yeah Yehas record, either. Sounds like a stupid, preening schtick.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds like she wants to have sex w/someone

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the whole thing, including "Maps." Also, knowing what they're capable of makes me appreciate the earlier eps a bit more. I didn't care for them much at first.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I just bought My Morning Jacket the other day. I really like it so far, but I can imagine it being a sinker.

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Although I don't "hate" them, I don't understand all the hype surrounding the Strokes. They've always seemed very ordinary to me and the new record didn't change a thing for me. Am I alone?

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Strokes
Outkast

sorry, not hatin' - just not feelin'

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't like it either (except for "Hunted by a Freak") but who the hell is even talking about the Mogwai album?

Also, I like Kish Kash, but I'm not crazy about it.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

...and the new record didn't change a thing for me.

Due, in no small part, to the fact it's almost a carbon copy. For whatever reason, though, it's marginally better than the debut.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The new Missy isn't terrible, but it's definitely a big letdown. Her weakest since Da Real World.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Is anyone calling this Missy's best album?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha I mean other than maybe Pitchfork.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

tired misogyny/racism comment

tom west (thomp), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

(.. to the thread. not pitchfork. oh nevermind.)

tom west (thomp), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

so, uh, the Unicorns are awful. probably.

tom west (thomp), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Should the new Liars qualify for my 2003 best-of?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"The new Missy isn't terrible, but it's definitely a big letdown. Her weakest since Da Real World."

Everyone says this but I've yet to see anyone (except Simon Reynolds) explain why or how Da Real World is weak!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Libertines (if that counts)
m83 (good, occaionally very good, but c'mon)

Simon H., Tuesday, 9 December 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hate" is a strong word, but I second the Libertines vote.

John Fredland (jfredland), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It takes more than just a bad album to make me actually *hate* someone. Right now, only those pedophiles over at Fountains of Wayne seem worthy of any meaningful dislike.

dlp9001, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

who said anything about hating people?

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone looking for recommendations for what's good should now know Dizzee Rascal's album is well worth purchasing.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

And the Libertines.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Girls Alahd

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Could someone take a few seconds to explain to me why 5,000 music critics simultaneously shot their load when Manitoba's new album came out? Thanks.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I've listened to the new Jay-Z twenty times through and it just gets more annoying each time. I don't understand what's the dealio: I mean, I guess if I had a previously-developed soft-spot for his not-trying-very-hard vocal cadence and god-complex I might not be so distracted by the oh soooooo creative lyrics and music-they-play-when-they-give-out-consolation-prizes-on-game-shows beats ha ha (like oh my god RICK FUCKING RUBIN wtf?).

And sorry jess I like you dude but you are a hate thread.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i like most of the stuff mentioned here actually

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

strokes seconded.
the rapture.
jay-z.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Every time I hear that Strokes record I can't recognize who they are. I've heard it like six times, every time "who the hell is this? I kinda like the guitar tone" and they're like "duh dude it's The Strokes". Two of these times it was the same person. The second time she was like "dude, you're a musician, you're supposed to know these things". ha ha

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

strokes. the darkness. just aint happening on my groove machine in 2003. in 5 years time i may suddenly realise i was wrong. but i can livve with that.

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The Rapture seconded. I want to like them...I loved the Gang of Four...but the Gang of Four had songs. The Strokes are ok, but not worth all the ink. Dizee's my favorite album of the year.

Not That Chuck, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i really really like 'Room On Fire', wtf?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

But Nick, the backing track on "99 Problems" sounds like DJ Shadow's "The Number Song"!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i want to like the rapture, too. i just don't feel it.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

No I actually k-like The Strokes record, I just can't ever recognize them for their music.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

the rapture have allowed the best bit to appear on some fine mixes (House of Gucci by IDC anyone ? ).. but the original tracks just wash over me ...

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

'sister saviour' is their best song - and i am still determined to mix it with 'Do Ya Think I'm Sexy'

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the logic of the darkness really did escape me. if they had good songs that would be one thing, but a joke band that plays 70's/80's inspired power/hair metal really badly isn't much of a joke when there are plenty of "actual" metal bands playing the same thing year in and year out. wait, that's not right. it's just that their joke isn't good enough. i'm all for jokes. it just puzzles me sometimes when people revive things that never went away in the first place. being in on the joke seems more important than anything as silly as music. cuz, if people really looked they could find tons of really GOOD 70's/80's inspired power/hair metal being made right here and now. which leads me to believe that people really wouldn't care if the darkness were metal, boogie rock or southern rock or whatever. they were just looking for a laff. which is fine. i think people must really think that real metal bands don't know what irony is. it just bugs me sometimes that people will choose to listen to something inferior that winks over something better that doesn't wink as loudly. this goes for stuff like The Faint-vs-the metropolis records roster as well.maybe i just like new wave and metal too much. but really if they had put out a great joke album i would have been all for it.great parody is really hard cuz you have to make something as good as the source you are poking fun at.i feel like except for those two great early singles/songs that the rapture fail at this too. even though they are less obviously a joke.

scott seward, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The Strokes, I semi-heard Room On Fire when I went in and out several times of a room where people were playing it, and on something like the fifth time I went back in I was like "why are you playing this one song on loop?", and they were like "we're not".
The Libertines
Jay-Z (again)
Radiohead (again)
THE FUCKING DARKNESS (actually I do understand why people like them, it's the same British penchant for bad novelty records which makes the Cheeky Girls 'popular', but I just don't like it)

I like The Rapture album just fine but it's hardly the dancefloor colossus I was expecting.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand the appeal of the sickly treacle that is Damien Rice. I mean, blecchhH!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah. with you on that Travelling Alex, same goes for Tom McRae etc .. jeez .. the wood work squeaks and out come all the fuckin singer songwriters for whom miserablism is an artform.

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The Wrens, The Constantines and The Books.

Alex Pittman (Alex Pittman), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

they're always populated by alex in nyc arguments and even more ridiculous hyperbole than the love threads.
-- fiddo centington (dubplatestyl...), December 9th, 2003.

So what you're getting at is, someone disliked an album you like?

David Allen, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think that's what he's getting at at all

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the Tron video that The Strokes did. I kept wishing that it had a more energetic song to go with it (or at least one where the bass and rhythm guitar were distinguishable from each other).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Thats how it came off.

David Allen, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Do the Happy Songs opponents hate Mogwai in general, or just the new album?

dieblucasdie (dieblucasdie), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I've always been a little disappointed in Mogwai, since I think they have extraordinary potential. My favorite record of theirs is actually Rock Action. "Hunted by a Freak" seemed like it was still riding that wave, but the rest of Happy Songs was snooze city.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

oh wait, i actually have one after all:

kelis - tasty :-( :-( :-(

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Embrace your hatred, Jess. Give into the Dark Side.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't hate it for the same reasons you would alex.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

(must...fight...temptation...so...strong...)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

You take yourself too seriously to enjoy hating things.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i'm way too busy enjoying things for starters.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Fine, live in denial.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

haha if i am living in denial about enjoying the hell out of music this year, then it's a denial i can live with.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

:)

raphael diligent (Cozen), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

But by asserting that I, conversely, don't enjoy music at all, you argument rings as hollow as a giant, broken bell.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think ive heard any 2003 slbums.

kephm, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

any/all laptronica for corny indie fuxxx. (exception: Prefuse 73, which is good not great, just like most of it) (when most of it is worth bothering with at all) (this isn't just 2003, mind)

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, I just heard Prefuse 73 over THanksgiving weekend and decided that they were SUPA DUPA.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

alex- you don't enjoy music at all.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

You better tell my wife that, as she's sick and tired of all the racket and the piles of CD's everywhere, then.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking of laptronica for corny indie fuxx0rs, the new Nathan Michel album is really quite excellent. Light, jazzy & FUN!

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

as I'm on the other side of the atlantic I'd have to print out yr posts to ILX and send it to her but its too much work and I'm lazy.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

any/all laptronica for corny indie fuxxx.

Postal Service to thread, maybe? I liked the album the first several times I listened to it, but less and less the more attention I pay. Oh, we'll start a brand new colony, escape this scene! Oh, the slings and arrows of being scenesters! Oh, fuck you.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I think what you're trying to say, is that I don't appreciate the same music as you do, Julio (although there are the occiasional overlaps in taste between us, as much as that probably pains you to hear). And I think that's fine, for the most part. Moreover, I doubt you share affinity for my favorite music....if you even consider it music (which I somehow doubt you do). I just think I'm a little more outspoken in my denouncement of music I don't like, which seems to upset folks like you and Jess.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the new Nathan Michel album is really quite excellent. Light, jazzy & FUN!

You must put it on the Actually Useful Roundup thread, then!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

basement jaxx's kish kash is way overrated. to me it just sounds...stupid. not even fun.
as per a few people above, i wanted to like the Rapture, but they only have one or two good songs.
Jay-Z's Black album was a disappointment. To me, it's about his 4th best.
Dizzee Rascal is bad. As is the Streets, which is probably 2002.
Neptunes 'Clones' was very, very average.
Most worrying trend is critics jumping on the I-love-pop bandwagon, citing music like Justin Timberlake, Kylie, Sugababes, Kelis, or whatever, as groundbreaking. It's not.

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

You must put it on the Actually Useful Roundup thread, then!

OK, will do.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

citing music like Justin Timberlake, Kylie, Sugababes, Kelis, or whatever, as groundbreaking. It's not.

I KNEW Jim DeRogatis was lurking around here somewhere!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

shoulda thrown an "instro-" in there someplace.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i definitely *understand* why people like dizzee but i found the album pretty tough to listen to (i luv u, fix up look sharp and brand new day excepted). it's just a tiny bit too off. not in the way that, say, indonesian music is. that's just way off of centre, so i can appreciate it as some sort of very alien musical experience. but then i try to listen to dizzee like i'm listening to young gunz or something and i just get thrown. maybe i'll get it in 2004.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

how about indie by corny laptop fuxx?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

shoulda thrown an "instro-" in there someplace

Actually, the Nathan Michel probably has about the same proportion of vocals as the Prefuse 73 album. More than half the songs are instrumentals.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

how about indie by corny laptop fuxx?

Hello me

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

or maybe I should just come out and say Four Tet and Manitoba and get it over with.

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

So as not to be completely negative, and because these are the ones about which I most trust my judgement (as opposed to, say, postal service or manitoba, who just plain suck) I will only list records I kind of LIKE, but not nearly as much as many other people seem to (and I will probably leave out lots of ones that didn't come to mind):

gaby kerpel
atmsosphere
the darkness
my morning jacket
audio bullys
a band of bees
black keys
4tet
fannypack
neil young
killer mike
ugly duckling
basement jaxx
rapture

chuck, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

or maybe I should just come out and say Four Tet and Manitoba and get it over with.

But Matos -- they're the most interesting things to happen to corny indie fuxors in years!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

don't understand the appeal of the sickly treacle that is Damien Rice. I mean, blecchhH!

Alex he's not big over there is he? haha he's from Dublin, and dreadful. The mag I write for is full of twats like him!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Jay-Z's new LP is more efficient than many Jay-Z LPs, though obviously he's never as special as people say he is. I mean, basically he's like Huey Lewis or Bryan Adams or somebody. And like *The Blueprint,* his new one seems to be in the neighborhood of *Sports* or *Reckless.* Why anybody expects more out of him has never made sense to me.

chuck, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

and Huey Lewis
made his boldest statement on
a Thin Lizzy record!

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I think Huey would have been a lot more interesting if he had constantly referred to himself in the third person using nicknames that equated him with a deity.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

HYWH Lewis and the News!

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, this is so-oooo juvenile, but I can't resist:

The Electric Sux

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yet another mention of Dizzee Rascal here.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

So, wait a sec - how can a giant, broken bell ring hollow?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The Darkness, The Strokes, The Other The Bands, Dizzee This And Ludithat and J-Whatever and KJ MC DJ Fuckwad.

Stupid (Stupid), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Btw. Whoever mentions SFA or Pernice Brothers is shot on sight! :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard the new SFA album, but a friend told me it's better than previous efforts.

I sure don't like that band much.

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I can dodge bullets.

Debito (Debito), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

in 2003 i didn't see what was so great about albums

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I'm ever going to listen to the Rapture album again now that I've seen them. Hearing that stupid voice come out of that ugly, dorky singer's mouth made me feel queasy. Ok, "Sister Savior" is pretty good. Btw, I don't think of Alex in NYC as being a big music-hater in the least.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The Electric Sux

Seconded. I never saw the appeal of Electric Six, even when NME blew them up for weeks.

Whoever mentions SFA or Pernice Brothers is shot on sight! :-)

Gotta agree with Geir, here, on the SFA tip. (First time I've ever said that;>)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I dont get the Tasty hate. It's not spectacular, but there's nothing to hate really.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Electric Six is another band I haven't listened to, having been completely appaled by the first 90 seconds of the album. This is not fair, I know. It's a problem, and I should stop.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

mitch otm really.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't really think of any bands I heard that I didn't question the value of enough on the threads about them. And there really isn't ILX sacred cows that I "hate." Though Mogwai and My Morning Jacket probably come closest of the ones I've actually heard. I guess the reason my blood doesn't get boiling is that its really easy to shut out the raving over a group like My Morning Jacket. It's not like they're culturally inescpable. I just feel sorry for Jess hating Outkast. I can't imagine how I'd feel about radio now if I hated "Hey Ya."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

and I didn't know you would have a post right before mine so its not like I was trying to pretend you weren't in the room, Jess. yo!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

haha miccio i fucking love the radio right now!! "hey ya" doesn't get played on any station i listen to regularly.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

(admittedly it gets played 200 times an hour everywhere else.)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hey Ya" gets played on all FOUR of the stations I listen to here. Even the classic rock one uses the music in the background during weather spots.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

the two hip-hop stations here havent touched it. the "all hits, all of the time" plays it with clockwork regularity.

(the hip-hop stations are playing "i like the way you move", instead, which i actually like, except that chorus is limburger not velveeta cheesy.)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The hip-hop station here definitely plays "The Way You Move" more. But I can't go a day without being asked to shake it like a polaroid picture at least once.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess OTM

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno if I've heard "Hey Ya" on the hip-hop station once.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Did they play "Let's Go Crazy" on R&B stations?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"let's go crazy" was never on rock stations where i was from.

darkness would bother me more, i guess, if they actually HAD jokes. i still don't get where their humor is supposed to be. but there are some sweet night ranger/scorpions melodies on that album, regardless. (though scott is of course OTM to argue that it's not even close to the best {or even funniest} {or even sweetest} metal out there lately.

ps) i should've listed *the love below* above, among other things.

chuck, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

darkness would bother me more, i guess, if they actually HAD jokes.

But... "bell's end"! It's genius! It's Richard Whitely levels of wordplay is that.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

the humor of the darkness is the guy's voice, natch! It's a guy doing an intentionally bad Ann Wilson parody! Sure it's a cheap joke, but that's the joke.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Btw, I don't think of Alex in NYC as being a big music-hater in the least.

Thank you, Sean.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

alex you still haven't answered how a giant, broken bell can ring hollow.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Poetic license.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll say!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think of Alex in NYC as being a big music-hater in the least

I agree

Debito (Debito), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Most worrying trend is critics jumping on the I-love-pop bandwagon, citing music like Justin Timberlake, Kylie, Sugababes, Kelis, or whatever, as groundbreaking. It's not.

who the fuck says that justin is groundbreaking? i haven't seen that anywhere. he just made a hell of a record, that's it.

oh, and as for shit that i just don't get:
the neptunes seconded. soooooo average.

the electric six is a pretty charming studio band, though. live, on the other hand, they suck schlong big time.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The Kylie album was terribly disappointing.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Dizee, Manitoba, Four Tet. Not hating, but, you know, ...

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

is the Kylie album getting good reviews, though?

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Even Bob Stanley likes the Kylie but it US half-rub, also the Goldfrapp album is ruthlessly mathematical in its "50%-great-50%-not"-ness. Outkast is really patchy (both bits). Dizzee is very good but I can't really imagine ever feeling eager to hear it again. Dammit.

Alex in Leeds (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

When I say US I really mean IS

Alex in Leeds (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

aw, shit.

the united states (M Matos), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate - I see your Electric Sux and raise you one WANK TANK.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I found Marcello's review of Clones where he essentially suggested that most of the stuff on there set the standard for modern pop music to be really baffling - where are the tunes then? But then, I frequently get the impression that Marcello decides whether to like or hate an album before he listens to it. (still got love for you though!)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Villalobos' Alcachofa album seems to be getting props from various corners but is hard work when not used as a dj tool. Tracks are long and drawn out and doesn't make for a great listen when put end to end. That said, when placed within a mix (see Easy Lee on Mayer's Fabric mix or What you say... on Dan Bell's Logistics mix) they make a lot more sense

Angus Macdonald (Gutta_Funk), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The Kylie album reviews were generally positive MM - 'mmm adult sophisticated pop, plus shes a national treasure'.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 12 December 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracks are long and drawn out and doesn't make for a great listen when put end to end.

The fact that he liberally samples Pink Floyd's "Fearless" on the new Bruchstuecke comp indicates where his head is at, I think. He's never in a hurry.

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 12 December 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Luomo - The Present Lover

Steps back and ducks.

stevo (stevo), Saturday, 13 December 2003 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The. Mars. Sodding. Volta.

And 50. Cocking. Cent.

Shangri-La (Shangri-La), Saturday, 13 December 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I heartily agree on both of those.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 13 December 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't like 50 cent???

did you buy the album Alex yeah?

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 13 December 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't like 50 cent???

Neither do I! (Neither does Chuck Eddy much -- we both agree he's astoundingly overrated when it comes to his vocals in particular, it's what turned me off him when I first heard him.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 December 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I just found the idea of Alex buying the 50 Cent album far fetched!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 13 December 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

That Luomo left me so cold. Thought Dizzee was just alright-to-good, ditto B Jaxx and The Rapture.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 13 December 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

did you buy the album Alex yeah?

Do I need to buy the album? If I wanted to hear it, all I have to do is go outside. It's everywhere!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 13 December 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Sleepy Jackson

2. The Darkness has been mentioned a bunch but I just downloaded that single of theirs and it's pretty lackluster in all respects. A tired-as-hell joke that isn't even executed through a catchy medium. BOR-ING.

3. Does "Losing My Edge" count?

adam michel (adam michel), Saturday, 13 December 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

and...
i don't think ive heard any 2003 slbums.

-- kephm (keph...), December 9th, 2003.

this is so great.

adam michel (adam michel), Saturday, 13 December 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the lost in translation soundtrack, i think everyone is hearing what they want to hear in those new, boring kevin shields songs. 12 years and this is all he has? that was my reaction. maybe i expected the earth to shatter.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 14 December 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Electric Six

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 14 December 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

r bloody kelly

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 14 December 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick otm about Luomo, I downloaded it after everyone here raved about it and it's pleasant but unspectacular. It's good to put on when you have to concentrate on work or something.

I don't understand why the k-rub "Ignition" got all the love instead of "Snake" when clearly "Snake" is genius.

I haven't heard the Fiddy album but I heart "In Da Club" and his Lil' Kim collab but hate "21 Questions" and "PIMP"... which are more rpresentative?

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 14 December 2003 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

(DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU ARE NED RAGGETT) i expected nothing from those kevin shields songs and that's what i got. so i wasn't dissapointed. i thought it was kind of a dirty trick to include a MBV song on the soundtrack too. it takes suffering by comparison to new heights.

scott seward, Sunday, 14 December 2003 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

"dear catastrophe waitress"
too many steps in too many wrong directions

adam michel (adam michel), Sunday, 14 December 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Luomo, I downloaded it after everyone here raved about it and it's pleasant but unspectacular. It's good to put on when you have to concentrate on work or something.

you put on luomo to 'concentrate on work'?! it's like the most distracting music ever! that's like saying 'yeah making out is good when you have to concentrate on work or something'

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 14 December 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

That Luomo left me so cold.

Oooh... but it leaves me so warm! And fuzzy! And a little sad.

So much for you and I being the same person, Nick.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 14 December 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate all the albums you like, except for the ones I like too, and I like them for better reasons than you.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 14 December 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU ARE NED RAGGETT

While I did enjoy what I've heard from that soundtrack, fret not, I didn't think it was the second coming.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 December 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

50 Cent was boring in this an excllent year for rap music.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 14 December 2003 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Contradictory as it may seem, I think playing the Luomo album in the background is a good way to get into it. Especially if, like me, you were initally put off by all the processed vocals and surface sheen. Only after hearing it from another room while washing dishes, whatever, did the underlying rhythms really pull me in. I'm still not sold on some of the vocals, but I dig it a little more with each spin.

Curt (cgould), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

update: at least one of the hip-hop stations has discovered "hey ya" (the clear channel one...)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

white stripes, strokes, kings of leon, evan dando, coral, the distillers, funeral of a friend, sleepy jackson, jet, blur, cooper temple clause, darkness, the thrills, starsailor

what do all these have in common apart from being top of my 2003 shitlist?

A: they all made the NME Top 50 albums of 2003

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Four Tet, The Rapture, Colder. Nope, sorry, not feeling it.

mike td, Tuesday, 16 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The Wrens Meadowlands seems to be this year's Yankee Hotel journeyman posterboy of choice. Guess what? It's very dull.

Curt (cgould), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Postal Service. This was the worst and most embarassing record I've heard in recent memory. The lyrics are AWFUL, particularly that duet with Jen Wood; the beats are fucking lame, the tunes stupid. The best song (Such Great Heights) stole it's melody from a vastly superior Bright Eyes song. I hate this record! Destroy all copies immediately please!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree about the Postal Service. Indie/emo kids have such low expectations these days, they really do.

I also agree that 50 Cent pretty much sucks.

Also: I wasn't impressed by the Luomo record either. I thought it was just kinda boring. Maybe I should try it again, I don't know.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 16 December 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

the thing with postal service is there is figurine(well there is dntel too but they are best forgotten) who are miles better and yet are mostly ignored. it's loking like it is the other two in figurine who keep them from stinking.

keith m (keithmcl), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow

Matt Golden (goldmatt), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Electric Sux
Actually, I didn't mind the album, which was a bit of a surprise, since I thought "Danger! High Voltage!" was really overrated!!!!!!
I found Marcello's review of Clones where he essentially suggested that most of the stuff on there set the standard for modern pop music to be really baffling - where are the tunes then?
Errr... I think you've just proved Marcello's point for him!!!!! (And if that doesn't make sense- you've just proved him right again!!!!)

(Puts another tick in the "B-b-but, it's NOT music!!!!" column.)

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Laptop corny indie fuXorz Manitoba and Four Tet, and even the new Medicine album, which I really really wanted to love..

Baaderist (Fabfunk), Friday, 19 December 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The. Mars. Sodding. Volta.

Agreed. I don't believe I've heard an album more deserving of a kick in its nuts all year...and I'm including Heavier Things, even.
