so, after my recent move to San Francisco, i seemed to run into local rockstars on a pretty frequent basis... Jonathan Richman, Mark Eitzel, Gold Chains...

who's in your hood these days?

ken taylrr, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Erykah Badu. And, uh, Ian Williams.

hstencil, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Welcome to San Francisco ken.

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw B. C0rg@n riding his bike down Michigan a couple of weeks ago.

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw John Navin of the Aluminum Group at a party a few weeks ago. My brother was recently behind Jeff Tweedy in line at Trader Joe's.

HAHA, x-post! Everyone in Chicago has an "I-saw-Billy-Corgan" story except for me.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

You saw Jello Biafra at 16th and Mission!! How come I didn't?

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Jack white...Meg White...Brendan Benson...Slumber Party girls (they wait on me when I go out to eat)...Rachel Nagy...they are in my neighborhood bars all the time...Ian Svenonious the other day...

webcrack (music=crack), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Boston:
Peter Wolf all the time on Newbury St. Always.

And my Dad ran into Steven Wright on his lunch today. Not quite a rock star, though.

gunfighter, Tuesday, 9 December 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Udo Lindenburg the other day.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Bebe Buell

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

WTF? Why aren't I running into more rockstars in SF? Do I need to hang out at the Kilowatt more often or something?

Well, okay, I run into Kelly Stoltz a lot but that's just because his practice space is in the same building as my band's space.

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose I could see Sugar Ray around here if I wanted to, but I don't want to. The Social D. guys are in the area, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary Margaret O'Hara was eating sushi around the corner a while ago. But I'm lousy at spotting rockstars. Never recognize them at all.

pauls00, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"Who are Soo Young Park and Ash Bowie?

I'll take 90s Indie Guitar Gods Seen In & Around San Francisco for $800 Alex."

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I ran into Cex in a pizza place a few weeks ago.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't seen any in SF either, but indie rockers all look the same to me.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

other folks oft-spotted in SF:
Mark Eitzel (already mentioned)
Miles from Beulah
Dan the Automator
Owen Ashworth

and my gf spotted Willie Nelson a couple months ago. She said she recognized him, made eye contact, and then he had this "please don't fucking approach me" look on his face, so she let him be.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw this underground bassplayer named Matt Gonzalez last night on Haight Street.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

every time I hear that "Matt Gonzalez is a bass player" line I think of him delivering it a la Bob Odenkirk's character who just wants to "hang out" but promises he is "not a lawyer" and "does not want to have sex with you." (the name of this character escapes me - but I just picture Matt delivering the "And I played bass! In a rock band!" line in this nasally tone of voice while jabbing his finger at the camera).

I DID vote for him tho, btw.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

We ate next to Gregg Alexander a while back and saw one of the Romantics at Trader Joe's the other day.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

saw clay aiken at the mall of all places... i see the rosebuds around. i have yet to see any of the superchunkers. (chapel hill.)

the wife saw andy griffith .. . and he does have gospel cds... although he's comedy albums are still gold.

Dave mustaine lives in 858, vahid? I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned by alan 'scoop' stevens for citybeat or something.

Shep, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

excluding shitloads of rockstar friends and acquaintances past and present, being a New Yorker, I can tell you I've seen almost everybody - David Cross, The Strokes (regularly), Lydia Lunch, etc etc etc. Shit, dude, half of the NYC rockstars work at record stores. You can't swing a dead cat in Noo Yawk without hitting one of Black Dice, Sonic Youth, Calla, or Sightings. Not to mention all the garage rock losers, from Star Spangles to Mooney Suzuki and back. A friend of mine sorta-dated Lenny Kaye for a bit and I got to hang out at his house once - that was awesome. I see him from time to time. He's great.

We sat at the table next to Moby at a restaraunt once, and Julian Casablancas came in on a bike and ordered some food to go. Wasn't even a trendy ass place, really...strange coincidence?

I saw Jack Lauria (the dad from The Wonder Years) on the street once - that was awesome. I love that guy.

My girlfriend knows everybody but that's more embarrassing than impressive. We're talkin' Grammy winners, Emmy winners, etc...

All the years in New York (my whole life), I have never seen Richard Hell, Lou Reed or Paul Simon, tho I have heard they are all around. I've spent some time in Michigan but not seen either White Stripe (tho I met The Go and Slumber Party, if that means anything to any of you grim fucks), but I know people that go to their parties and shit.

My friend Deborah is a makeup artist and has done The Rock and some other wrestlers. Not Mick Foley tho, unfortunately...

This would make a good-ass scavanger hunt, guys, especially all you Windy City and Cali folks. Would that qualify as starfucking? No friends allowed, only celebrity strangers you've never talked to or met ("hey man, great set" doesn't count tho) - in honor of The Simple Life, be lame!

roger adultery, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I've served Nick Cave his new passport. Twice actually. Saw Roland S Howard flat hunting in St Kilda. He almost stood on my hand in Missing Link once as well come to think of it, the sod.

Sat next to Kim Salmon on the back bar at the Price, but I dunno if gigs count really.

John Safran (who only Aussies would really know) lives down the road from me - I see the jammy sod riding his bike and shopping in Coles all the damn time.

I was penfriends with the singer from the Mavises/Junkatique. Apparently she remembers me too, heh.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

kim salmon used to pop in occasionally when i was recording the last LP

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

what roger said. although i do see richard hell fairly frequently. he lives on my block, or near it. he is very short.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I live next door to Simon Le Bon, but see very few other celebs going round for wild parties.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I never see rock stars around any more. I guess Bloomsbury is just not as rock n roll as Hoxton.

Unless, of course, you count seeing him out of Disinformation washing up in my kitchen. ;-)

(Julian Casablancas can ride a bike? Whoa!)

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris Piuma of the world famous Minor Thirds was seen on my crappy fold-out fake couch last week.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I met Ray Davies in the avant-garde music shop in.....Muswell Hill.
(Last place you'd expect....etc.)

pete s, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Rudy Giuliani and Hilary Clinton in the street the last time I was in New York. She rocks, anyway.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Thom Yorke lives round the corner from here I think. But since he's been on tour since I've moved in, I haven't seen him yet

jellybean (jellybean), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I constantly see Tom Verlaine at my local coffee shop (the News Bar on University Place, you Television-stalkers!) He seems a bit grumpy most of the time.

No rockstar, but Jenaanne Garafallo (sp?) seems to live in my neighborhood, as I'm constantly spotting her in my supermarket and in the windows of at least two or three different Starbucks's (an establishment I'm quasi-surprised she gives her money too, given her oft-cited lefty leanings).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Lou Reed & Laurie Anderson walk their dog in front of my building all the time.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick Cave at gigs and just out & about; Kevin Rowland going shopping in his fur coat; Captain Sensible drunk and acting funny; David Thomas of Pere Ubu lives close but I haven't seen him yet; Gaz Coombes buying pasta in Waitrose...

The last flat we lived in, we had Colin the bass player from the Porcupine Tree upstairs, an ex-Blue Aeroplane next door, and the guitar player from Cockney Rebel just along the street. That was the street Genesis P. Orridge used to live in too.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

mary timony at a noodle place in chinatown. thurston moore at used record shops. mission of burma guys in chinatown

it was better in the early 90's: k. hersch, kim deal, frank black, mark sandman, lou barlow, evan dando, j. mascis, galaxie500, all the time. yeah, boston(cambridge really) is a small city

kephm, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I bumped into Bobby Gillespie three different times in the space of 4 days in Islington a couple of weeks ago, once in the company of Alan McGee. Has he nothing better to do with his time than wander aimlessly up and down Upper Street?

ArfArf, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Garbage are always hanging around here, buying wine from my girlfriend and such. And Clyde Stubblefield, of course.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I bumped into Bobby Gillespie three different times in the space of 4 days in Islington a couple of weeks ago, once in the company of Alan McGee. Has he nothing better to do with his time than wander aimlessly up and down Upper Street?

No. He doesn't. At least he wasn't on his bicycle. When I lived in Islington then Hoxton, I saw Bobby G at least once a week. Geez, doesn't he know I've moved?

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

When I had a Sunday job at BhS, the lead singer of Wheatus came in (they'd played a gig at the Roadmender the previous night and must have been doing a stayover). He was trailed by about 15 cretinous sk8 types, like flies around shit. Anyway, all he bought was a pair of thick, hiking style socks. When he came up to the counter, all he said was "I'm buying English socks".

What a wanker.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

the cash money millionaires when i lived in harlem!!

that was awesome

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to see Jah Shaka about now and again but I haven't for a bit. That's a shame, I liked seeing him.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to see Colm O'Ciossog and Hope Sandoval in the east bay the past few summers.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

saw mulholland drive when it came out at the angelika in nyc. theater was packed, few seats left, when a man in black leather jacket and black jeans walks to the front looking for a seat, he turns to walk back up the aisle, and I see it's lou reed!!! what a sighting. it still makes me happy. I guess he found a seat because he walked into the mens room after the show, just as my bf walked out. damn! he was with a younger couple, also dressed in black, and we followed them from a distance for about a block when they left the theater.

my bf was also invited to willie nelson's ranch when he lived in austin. some girl brought him along, don't know how she was invited, but they all made a movie that day, and the guests were extras - including my bf who played somebody in a saloon. the movie had a western theme. apparently willie likes to make his own films like this out at his compound. they also smoked lots.

skizaor, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I see Joe Jackson on the street a lot....and he usually looks upset.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

so, after my recent move to San Francisco, i seemed to run into local rockstars on a pretty frequent basis... Jonathan Richman, Mark Eitzel, Gold Chains...

you have a very liberal definition of rockstar! That will make them happy.

Does anyone see, like, Thom Yorke at the SAfeway or anything?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh someone does live near Thom Yorke, never mind. that's what I get for not reading carefully.

I used to see Colm O'Ciossog and Hope Sandoval in the east bay the past few summers

They actually go to shows all the time these days. It is hard not to stare at her.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I know some guys who are kind of biggish in Canada but I wouldn't really call them rock stars. I bump into Andy Magoffin and the rest of the Two-Minute Miracles on a regular basis and a couple of guys from the Constantines. Um, that's about it.
Oh, and a couple of guys who were formerly in the Gandharvas, but they're pretty quiet about it.
Kind of disappointing neighborhood rock star stories.
I've met a bunch more, but that really doesn't jibe with the topic.

Christian Rawk (Christian Rawk), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

akm, i see you and your wife at shows (explosions in the sky on sunday)... hehe.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

God, I see Joe Jackson around a lot too. He sat in front of me once at the Film Forum...the fucker's really tall!

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

hey I didn't see you! you should have said hello. We got guest listed because I am a namedropper, and also I am cheap.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

La Monte Young passed by my workplace today!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I literally just saw comedian Jeffrey Ross in my local Korean deli. And he was scolded by the woman at the register for handing her a ripped one dollar bill.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I met one of the dudes from that Nada Surf band on the subway today, but it wasn't in my neighborhood.

The only time I've seen Lou Reed in New York was on the occasion of his girlfriend's 50th birthday.

hstencil, Thursday, 11 December 2003 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Q Tip buying a huge stack of cds at the Virgin Megastore. The only ones I could see where the Strokes and the first ODB. But then this really annoyed me: he had the girl behind the counter open all the packaging for him.
But then I saw him being interviewed at the New School on Monday and he seemed nice.
That behaviour must have been Nicole Kidman's influence (Am I insane or dreaming? They were together for a while, right?)

Magic City (ano ano), Thursday, 11 December 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

And by "girlfriend," you mean Laurie Anderson, right? Or is there something I don't know?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

used to see lot's of folks in nashville... shelby singleton (if he counts since he's the current owner of sun records), sam phillips (rip), dixie chicks... dave berman... ray stevens... the wife met merle haggard... james talley (our landlord)... otha turner lived a few blocks away and would have a big blues birthday bbq block party bash every year with many other old blues dudes.....shooter jennings (son of waylan) would hang with scenesters i knew... etc...

there's a lot of session and touring musicians in town... and song writers... lot's of the folks with money in that town, got their money from the industry... every knows somebody who knows somebody. i know a guy who knows the judds through some girl at work. i know another guy who has played bass for a lot of motown people. etc etc. so many of the big names were small names at one point too. didn't garth brooks work at target or walmart?

so it goes... that town is kinda small and ultimately packed because of the business there.

my girlfriend swears she saw Morgan Freeman on a NYC subway car eating two hot dogs.

bangor, Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Morgan Freeman is not a rockstar.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

He eats like one, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

No he's not.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 11 December 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been in NY for a week and so far the only quasi... and I mean VERY quasi-famous person I've seen is that Serena Altshul woman who used to be on MTV. Boring!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Morgan Freeman is not a rockstar
He's Easy Reader - that's pretty fuckin' rock&roll.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen trent reznor and quintron in the quarter on various occasions (never together of course)

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Why did you get to see Trent Reznor?

Aja (aja), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the french quarter in new orleans, he used to ride his bike around town a lot. my ex-girlfriend goes to the same Mardi Gras party that he does.

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Not fair.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

the cash money millionaires when i lived in harlem!!

A friend of mine used to work in the green room for the Jenny Jones Show and about a week into her job, the CCM were on the show and ordering her around to get them tea.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Just this afternoon, I saw Jack Natz (of the Undead/Virus/Cop$hootCop/RedExpendables notoriety) having a cup of coffee at the University Diner on 12th street.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Billie Joe Armstrong supposedly lives on one of the nicey-nice streets in St. Paul now -- Summit Ave., same street the governor's mansion is on. Rumor has it he's been spotted a few times at Cheapo discs, which is funny when you consider how many $4 used copies of Dookie they have stashed away there.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

billie joe armstrong used to live up the hill from me. and famously (amongst my friends anyway) we once got drunk with him at jupiter pub in berkeley and it was raining outside and he took a whizz on the wall which splashed on my friend's leg.

lint/tim from rancid used to serve me pizza at blondies. but that was before anyone knew who he was. once he sat with me and told me all about his childhood friend who died at Jonestown. Fucked up!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, Jack Natz was also in the Black Snakes...http://www.geocities.com/thetodhole/blacksnakescrawlback.jpg

That's him on the far right....looking much younger and fresher.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

AKM pointed out Hope Sandoval to me once.

Does anyone see, like, Thom Yorke at the SAfeway or anything?
When I lived in London, I saw Bjork shopping in Belsize Park, at the cheapest of cheap-ass grocery stores (for Belsize Park, anyway).

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Welcome to the Bay Area, Ken.

Hmmm... he lives two houses away from the woman who works next to me (this in Oakland, California). She's actually in Minnesota right now but I will ask her when she returns tomorrow.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

And yes, this is a "nicey nice" street in North Oakland that was ravaged by fires in the fall of 1990.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe he has an additional house up here for when he's with his (forgot: girlfriend? wife?) who lives in the Twin Cities.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Very true, I will ask the all knowing Elizabeth. She's lived on that street for about 20 years.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

David Thomas lives in Brighton now???

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 11 December 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen Rick McMurray from Ash twice in Belfast, once buying a stack of books in Waterstones, the other time looking in a jeweller's window with his girlfriend. And I almost bumped into Mark Morriss from The Bluetones in McDonald's in Lancaster before I went to see them a couple of years ago.

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Friday, 12 December 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I see those blink-182 dorks quite often here in encinitas...

I used to see eddie vedder out in the water surfing (he's a kook) pretty often. I also have been out in the water with Ben Harper (kook) and Jack Johnson (not a kook...too bad his music sux)

also, I see Shock G from time to time hanging out at this crap local club my brother has a (hip hop) dj residency at.

tylero, Friday, 12 December 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The Yankees catcher circa '00 left me a $50 tip on a $20 bill. I recognized him at the time, but now have no clue.

(All my celeb experiences are sports or Pantera related. Yikes.)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 12 December 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, this is on ILM. Then, my only rockstar experience was getting drunk with Dimebag Darrell one afternoon.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 12 December 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I live in Phoenix, which is where old metal gods go to retire. I've seen Marty Friedman of Megadeth, George Lynch of Dokken, Alice Cooper, Max Cavalera of Soulfly and others out and about in clubs. Glenn Campbell lives around here, too, as does Jessi Colter. I see Jessi more than any of the others combined. She's 60 and still gorgeous.

Chris O., Friday, 12 December 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't Rob Halford live in Phoenix as well?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 12 December 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

saw anthony kiedas (red hot chili peppers) at amoeba one time with some super hot girl. She looked young, he looked old.

hector (hector), Friday, 12 December 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

While perusing through Tower Records on 66th Street, Late night public access porn queen Robyn Byrd once asked me if (a) I was an employee and (b) should she buy License to Ill by the Beastie Boys. I said, (a) No and (b) yes. Speaking of the Beastie Boys, I saw Mike D. on Howard Street & Broadway two weeks ago.

Does anyone see, like, Thom Yorke at the SAfeway or anything?

I saw Ian Svevonius at DC's "Social" (Georgetown) Safeway a couple months ago. I live a few blocks from Dischord House (and used to live up the street from it), but I don't see anyone particularly well-known in my immediate neighborhood anymore.

I almost bumped into Dr Fox outside my work the other day. He looked stressed. I thought about actually bumping into him but it would have obviously been on purpose.

Some guy from Travis (the one who's married to the actress in Intermission) lives three doors down from me.
