what was the last song you played that you had to listen to ten more times in a row?

I was driving in my car and put on "Through the Trees" by the Handsome Family. After "Weightless Again" was finished, I had to put it on repeat and play it for about a half hour straight. Those fucking lyrics are insane, I swear it's one of the best songs I've ever heard.

how bout the rest of you?

Yeah, LCD Sound System

"Meet Me By the Water" -- Saturday Looks Good to Me

But you're right about "Weightless Again" -- some of my favorite lyrics ever. Also great on that album is "The Woman Downstairs"

"Weightless Again" is hypnotic.

Life Without Buildings - 'Let's Get Out'. I've got into that album all over again, I've been listening to it solidly for the last week, haven't really played much else, just living inside that one record.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Renegade Soundwave is fast and effective. But ten times in a row?

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Xiu Xiu's "Sad Pony Guerilla Girl" -- this was a while ago, but I'm still sure I've never heard anything like it (even the original version of the song, "Sad Girl," by the singer's old band Ten in the Swear Jar, is no comparison). It scared the shit out of me in a cool way and I kept wanting it to happen again and it kept working.

my answer to the thread question is "Hey Julie" and i'm not ashamed to say it

and I went bananas for "Meet Me By The Water" too when I first heard it (thanks ILM!)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 25 December 2003 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

These three in this order more than ten times in a row:

"Dog Days" by Matthew Dear
"Millionaire" by Kelis feat. Andre 3000
"Yeah (Stupid version)" by LCD Soundsystem

Nik (Nik), Thursday, 25 December 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"Throng" by Nick Ingman. (If you're not up on your library music, this was sampled heavily by LTJ Bukem for "Inner Guidance".)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 25 December 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I never do this, I mean, who has the time? But I found myself getting strangely jealous of all y'all who do nothing but sit around listening to "Yeah" x 10 (that's like 3 hours or something!!)

so I've decided to listen to "Dum Dum Diddle" by ABBA 10 times.. I'll report back

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 25 December 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

damn I wish I'd picked Fernando

You know, "I wish I was dum dum diddle" is grammatically incorrect

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 25 December 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Lyrics Born ft. Lateef "The Last Trumpet". And even after the tenth time I still couldn't believe such a badical song existed.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 27 December 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

this hardly ever happens to me either-- about once every ten to fifteen years. but it happened a few weeks ago.

"The Game is Not Over" (feat. Ms. Kitten) - T. Raumschmiere

i dislike the rest of the album, though.

lf, Saturday, 27 December 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Cannot Contain This by Moloko. I always want to return to the beginning of the song. It's a triptych, the first being the most sublime.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 27 December 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i would never play a song ten times in a row but i think Braxe & Falke's 'Rubicon' came closest most recently

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 27 December 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"Chronograph" by Sketch Show must've been the latest.

(And prior to that, Abba's "Visitors" and Sõpruse Piestee's "Ma olen õnnelik, et inimesed on nii ilusad ja head", I'm pretty certain)

Snnap Dragon (snnap dragon), Saturday, 27 December 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I've probably done this for Popular more recently, but voluntarily? "Crashed The Wedding" by Busted came closest. And "Scared Of Girls" by Komatrohn.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 28 December 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

how good is komatrohn's cover of 'small town boy'?! i love that line 'mother will never understand why you had to leave'.

cozen. (Cozen), Sunday, 28 December 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(that's probably actually the answer to the thread question too, for me: komatrohn's 'small town boy': 'you leave in the morning with everything you own in a little black case'! )

cozen. (Cozen), Sunday, 28 December 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

A quick check on my Windows Media stats tells me I've listened to Scared Of Girls and Smalltown Boy an exactly equal number of times. Yes it's wonderful.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 28 December 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

iTunes play count says i've listened to 'small town boy' exactly 10 times.

I never do this either; I may an album and then play the single again afterwards. But I have to admit to playing "Me Against the Music" *over and over*. I was in a cheesy-ass club a couple weeks ago, and heard a remix that removed the fast singing part before the chorus, which blew my mind; that's easily the best part of the song!

Sean (Sean), Monday, 29 December 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Me neither, I think I'd kill a song playing it 10 times in a row. I wonder why some people love to repeat things and others don't. When I first began getting into music in high school I'd play the same tapes day after day but as my collection grew I always wanted to pull out something new or something I hadn't listened to in a long time. Except for new acquisitions, I still won't play an album more than once a month. At best.

Mr. Odd, Monday, 6 August 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

I think it has something to do with intelligence, or lack thereof. An intelligent person would take no pleasure at all in hearing the same song more than say, roughly 6 times in a row.

Bimble, Monday, 6 August 2007 01:03 (eighteen years ago)

I dont tink I've ever done 10 plays in a row but I've certainly done 10 or more within a single day, and maybe 3 or 4 in a row with some things. Lately "The Long Dance" by Disco Inferno, because it reminds me that I am capable of being very happy, and it makes me feel sunny and safe.

i have never done this and never will unless i'm forced to. it would kill any song for me.

Lingbert, Monday, 12 November 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

I think it's more common to do this if you're a songwriter. With "Metal Guru" I really wanted to understand it's structure and how it builds up.

snoball, Monday, 12 November 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

"i have never done this and never will unless i'm forced to. it would kill any song for me.

you must be listening to the wrong music. i have listened to certain songs upwards of 40 times in a row, and i still love them to death. only the best songs can stand up to that kind of repetition.

Mark Rich@rdson, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 05:39 (eighteen years ago)

for me last week it was LCD Soundsystem "Yeah" (Crass Version), which has such a stunning build-up over 5-6 minutes

I've been playing a lot of Pet Shop Boys recently, last couple weeks or so. I have no doubt I've played "Being Boring," "Suburbia," "Rent," "Go West," "It's a Sin," and especially "Can You Forgive Her?" at least ten times apiece this week. The latter, in particular, I spun at least 5 times in a row the other night.

"you must be listening to the wrong music. i have listened to certain songs upwards of 40 times in a row, and i still love them to death. only the best songs can stand up to that kind of repetition.

i could totally see 10 times in a row for someone who doesn't get burnt out as quickly as i do, but 40 times in a row is nuts. i mean, good for you, i guess, but i can't even fathom that.

Lingbert, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 05:04 (eighteen years ago)

but hey, maybe i really haven't heard the right music. plz list songs you have listened to ~40 times in a row.

Lingbert, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 05:07 (eighteen years ago)

i couldn't stop playing that mike nesmith song a week or two ago. i just had to hear it over and over. i was transfixed. so beautiful. it's like discovering a new world.

also, my favorite karen alexander album. last month i must have played it ten times in one week. Or more. I've probably played it 50 times since i got it last year or whenever. i'm obsessed.

For some reason this happened seriously with Hot Chip's version of Don and Sherry

It happened with the original for me, although probably not ten times in a row.

More recently, "Heaven on Earth", Britney Spears, two days ago.

I went through a period recently, right after a breakup, where I would play "Halah" by Mazzy Star many, many times per day.

I've been working my way through the 2012 albums poll results and when I got to Chairlift's "I Belong In Your Arms" I was so gobsmacked I think I basically didn't get anything done for the next half hour, just listened to it again and again.
