@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

as far as I know this is just a rumor. I don't think this project is even in pre-production, just something that's dropped in interviews as "maybe happening"...

that being said, I bet he could do it. He does bear a fairly strong physical resemblance to Jimi, and his personality seems right for it...

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe he could just "Remix" some Hendrix songs by putting a beat over them?

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

he looks the part. their films all suck except for the pimp documentary, though.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Can he play the geetar?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, he can pull off the look and he plays guitar, def. well enough to fake it. Well, he plays right-handed, maybe they'll have to reverse the film in all the performance scenes?

I like the Dizzy Gillespie look he's been rocking lately.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Being able to actually act would be a plus as well. Sometimes everyone forgets about that part.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

act schmact, when was the last time that held anybody back?

Huck Everlasting (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh, speak of the devil ... that song comes on ..

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Purple Haze?? Yeah, ick.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"he looks the part. their films all suck except for the pimp documentary, though. "

No way. Menace II Society is by far the best of the mid-90s "gangsta" blaxploitation genre films.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Best of a bad bunch, IMO.

juice had its moments.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Purple Haze?? Yeah, ick.

No, the terrible "remix" of 'My Favorite Things.'

dean! (deangulberry), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

They didn't make "Juice."
But "Menace" is damn good. Holds up well, fantastic soundtrack, etc. And "Dead Presidents" has some great sequences.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah. At least the piano player on that track is good!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

They didn't make "Juice."

I didn't say they did!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I was referring to Shakey Mo's last comment.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Boyz in the Hood ownz Menace.

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"Boyz in the Hood ownz Menace."

Ugggh! No way! As Eazy-E said at the time, that piece of shit is just "an after shool special with some cussing". Ice Cube is semi-decent, and Fishburne gets a good monologue or two, but the whole story arc is so stupid and predictable. And it strikes me as a very glossed-over, "coat the lens with vaseline" film version of "the ghetto". Menace II Society is actually kind of scary. Hood is just a cautionary tale.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Why don't they make films like those anymore? I thought both were scary as hell.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Judgement Night was the best depiction of day to day ghetto life I've seen, so sad but so true. I firmly believe that everybody else saw that and thought that there were no more hood narratives left to spin.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Holding it down on the real: New Jack City, Logan's Run.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, and the Judgement Night soundtrack was the best EVAH.

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

(ps nordic i kiss you)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Menace was propped up by this vacant realer-than-thou posture. All shock value and no substance. Boyz had a redemptive quality to it and it made me laugh. Menace was one dimensional.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Bladerunner really opened up my eyes to the urban crisis.. all those poor ghetto-dwellers in constant fear of organ harvesters and androids.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Now that was scary.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

is noone else horrified by this prospect? I shudder to think of Andre attempting Jimi's affected British accent. and I can't really see him getting down the right body language or posture either. it just all seems like a really heavy-handed move just to get across "hey look! i play guitar too! I'm part of the lineage of innovators in black music!"

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

if they're gonna do a black acid rock biopic the better choice (and the better story) would be Sly.

I'm not horrified by this prospect - the movie may suck, but it'll probably be interesting. Sure its an obvious career move for Andre, but so what? Are you saying he *doesn't* deserve to be part of the lineage of black musical innovators? And who else bears a more physical resemblance to Jimi? Will Smith? Denzel? No one else would pick up the feel of being a musician like Jimi as well as Andre.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

That song is definitely worth hearing, Nate, I swear.

scott m (mcd), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

what about that film fresh?
that had one of the most vivid, disturbing scenes ive ever seen

also,if anyone can explain what the connection between fresh and the sample at the start of ironman by ghostface is id be most appreciative

robin (robin), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I've heard it before ("Freak Mama", right?), but I sort of lost the memory of it until it was jogged by that picture. That Cypress Hill/Sonic Youth thing, though... that remains a complete mystery.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah! "Freak Mama" Holy smokes.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

plus better andre 3000 than Will Smith

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

or sidney poitier

omg, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Andre 3000 always looks a little small and skinny to me. Maybe that's just in comparison to Big Boi?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Higher Learning is, in retrospect, the funniest movie ever made.

sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

thank you, sym. THANK YOU. That movie wasn't designed to be watched. It was designed to have each scene paused and discussed by a sensitivity trainer.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't that the film where everyone ended up doing something theoretically wrong or bad or thrillingly transgressive?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

no, there was this one fellow who wasn't only the token "nice guy" for the assault victim, he was ALSO the token "nice white guy" for Omar Epps!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

AW

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

You're welcome, Anthony.
I think it was designed to be watched while extremely drunk and obnoxious. Let me see if I can remember the five symbols on the poster...
Female, Black Fist, Swastika, Peace...
Star of David? Dollar Bill? Please Recycle?

sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I really appreciated how each lead character had a specific band that played behind them on the soundtrack. Very Peter And The Wolf.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with Miccio here. Also, Big Boi BETTER have a cameo as Otis Redding.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It probably helps that I think Jimi Hendrix is really really funny already

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Enrique Iglesias IS Santana! Oh God, if you're listening...

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Bright Eyes as Pete Townsend, DMX as Miles Davis, Dizzee Rascal as Little Richard...

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Dre is much taller than Big Boi, who despite the name is only about 5ft8in.

Apparently Dre's English accent is pretty shit - he tried it in that interview in the last issue of Muzik.

Nick H (Nick H), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Jimi's presumably was too

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never for one second thought that Jimi Hendrix affected a British accent, and I've been a massive fan for around 20 years. Where in the heck did that come from?

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Those Hughes Bros. are some controversial negroes I tell you what

Annoyed with pop culture (ModJ), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

OTM OTM OTM!!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Higher Learning was great if only for Busta Rhymes' character.

Is everyone being sarcastic or do most of y'all really hate Hughes bros. movies? As far associal commentaryism goes I would say 'meh', but as far as tales-designed-for-emotional-manipulation-of-the-audience, they're top fucking notch.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway, I cannot even begin to imagine Andre being a worse/less-accurate Hendrix than whoever that asshat was in the last (incredibly shitty) Hendrix biopic.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Chappelle should be Hendrix.

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I adored FROM HELL. My GF, who isn't a guy or a film reviewer, loved it too.

The girl thing in it was pretty bad, but otherwise, a real pretty hoot. I like the idea of them doing, um, making a Hendrix biopic.

Will Trower dub the live show sequences?

Ian Grey (Ian_G), Thursday, 29 January 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

From Hell was bad, but I read the comics and can't divorce the film from the story I was expecting. Maybe I'd like it if I hadn't read them.

if they're gonna do a black acid rock biopic the better choice (and the better story) would be Sly.

They can't do that one until he turns up dead.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 29 January 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, I'm no longer so horrified about this, my focus has shifted to the news of Mos Def being cast as Ford Prefect in a "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" movie.

funny-skrillex-bee_132455836669.gif (s1ocki), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

Janie Hendrix is taking a lot of shit in the comments there, but am I right in thinking that his estate was a shambles before she took over? Also, it looks like the filmmakers never had any intention (or at least not enough intention to bother asking) of using any original Hendrix-written material.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 22:20 (thirteen years ago)

ya right

funny-skrillex-bee_132455836669.gif (s1ocki), Wednesday, 4 July 2012 22:21 (thirteen years ago)

Actually, I'd be in favor of more music biopics framing themselves as "how they got there" pieces rather than dramatizations of the super famous years. Hendrix did a lot of session work and scraping by before Are You Experienced? that I'm not at all familiar with.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 4 July 2012 22:28 (thirteen years ago)

most good biopics are about a very limited period in the subject's life i find. cradle to grave ones always suck

this is very true, although at this point i feel pretty scorched earth about biopics in general and especially music biopics and ESPECIALLY ones that are an ego trip star vehicle for a musician-turned-actor. so basically still feel the same way i did upthread 8 years ago, fuck this shit, i hope it's a catastrophe, fuck andre, hendrix 4ever etc.

some dude, Thursday, 5 July 2012 01:09 (thirteen years ago)

yes agree on all that. they're not always good when they do that. they're usually, as a rule, bad!

i think the last one i didn't venomously hate was the Andy Serkis-as-Ian Dury one, which i think got a lot of help from me not having too much familiarity with the subject to get hung up on accuracy/resemblance/etc.

not really a biopic if its not comprehensive, more of a memopic

that's true, but i think a bigger issue with this for me is when you make a movie about a TV age celebrity/public figure, the viewer knows exactly what the real person looks/sounds/acts like and it becomes such a preoccupation or requirement. i mean i don't think The Doors is a very good movie but i'm pretty impressed with it just on the level of how uncanny Val Kilmer is as Morrison. Andy Serkis-as-Ian Dury

See, I really enjoyed the film, but I never really got convinced that AS was ID, not really. People say he did a really good job, and I would agree, but Dury was so much a one-off that I don't think it could have been done. Also, the film was more about Baxter really, which I entirely approve of..

I'm confused by the article...

"All Along The Watchtower" is used in like 9000 other movies and was not written by Jimi Hendrix, so would they be able to use that? Or what about "Hey Joe?"

billstevejim, Thursday, 5 July 2012 15:43 (thirteen years ago)

i feel like tuomas is trying to force someone to say "black don't crack"

Seems to be a glaring oversight in the article IMO since those are 2 of his most famous songs

billstevejim, Thursday, 5 July 2012 15:46 (thirteen years ago)

Also no access to his catalog is a super bummer in general since super-sad-Hendrix-lyrics are a big part of what makes him compelling IMO.
