I might actually try and make it out to NYC for this. No guarantees though. But still . . . that lineup . . . [[faints]]

special guests tbc

Having Fun With Aphex On Stage!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 January 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

:( unfortunately in SF we get Kid 606 & the Tigerbeat6 Boys vs. Rephlex. I'm still gonna go just for Soundmurderer though (and Club Six is a fine enough venue.)

This show makes me wish I lived in NYC though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 January 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

hey alex is anything cool going on in SF tomorrow or saturday?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 30 January 2004 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Checks Flavorpill.

Um, nothing I'm particularly into, but certainly a bunch of stuff is happening (I would rather be flayed alive than see Dynasty or Dynasty Handbag or Dynasty Blowjob or whatever, ick.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 January 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Dynasty is dire

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 30 January 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

how about a good club night on friday or saturday - somewhere that i'll hear lil jon and felix the housekatt and the rapture?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 30 January 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

holy. fuck. [faints too]

i'm gutted that i missed bogdan when he visited glasgow (a couple of months ago; i only just got into a few weeks ago now i love love love 'my love i love' & 'renegade platinum...'); aphex twin dj'd as well apparently.

this sounds pretty good.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 30 January 2004 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha good luck with that Vahid, if I knew of one I'd be there.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 January 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Aphex Twin actually a good DJ? What sort of stuff does he even play?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 January 2004 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

mayer and superpitcher are playing chicago on 12 march. woo!

tricky disco (disco stu), Friday, 30 January 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

slightly roundabout related: i just found my flyer fr kompakt's first visit to britain in one of my drawers:

thomas fehlmann (live), tobias thomas (dj set), the modernist (live) titled, haha, 'Eat Your Own Ears'!

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 30 January 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooooh maybe that means they will come by SF way too. *droooools*

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 January 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

mayer and superpitcher are playing chicago on 12 march. woo!

yes!! I was out of the country the last time around and was gutted at missing it. Looks as if DJ SS, Grooverider, and Shy FX will be playing upstairs that night (smart bar/metro). (And Chicago has the Rephlex show on St. Patrick's Day at the Empty Bottle!)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Friday, 30 January 2004 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

HOW IN THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO CHOOSE WHICH ROOM???

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 January 2004 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

(haha time to get in touch with my homiez at rephlex i think)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 January 2004 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I imagine the Pitcher/Mayer will be playing non-stop (when I saw them in Cologne they were on for over six hours--no breaks) so I imagine you can sneak out briefly (for the Soundmurderer set ;0) and come back and not feel like you've missed too much.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 January 2004 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i feel a little giddy just thinking about it

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 January 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, wait...saw them in COLOGNE?!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 January 2004 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

come over here so i can kick your ass

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 January 2004 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha you should be really JEALOUS of Jen, MICHAEL MAYER kissed her on both cheeks when we went home to sleep at 6am!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i am sure he would kiss me on both cheeks too, the tart

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually all the Kompakt people (and just general folks too) seemed really amazed that people would take a side trip to Cologne (we were mostly in Paris for the rest of time) just to see them. "You are from San Francisco, but there must be stuff like this all the time, right?!?!?"

Btw, is Mayer really gay or is that just rumor?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

ummm I am pretty sure he is gay, but that is from nothing more than my own observation.

I wonder if this is coming to the west coast? It would be cool to see superpitcher.

hector (hector), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Looks as if DJ SS, Grooverider, and Shy FX will be playing upstairs that night (smart bar/metro)

it's going to be madness!

tricky disco (disco stu), Friday, 30 January 2004 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Btw, is Mayer really gay or is that just rumor?

sports fans: YOU MAKE THE CALL

vahid (vahid), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Sex is six in German though, too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

As I learned from watching commercials on MTV in German.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

sechs?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

IN ONE NIGHT???

vahid (vahid), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Although apparently it is spelled sechs, so nevermind hahaha. I'm not sure that's great evidence though. Not like oh seeing Mayer making out with a women is great evidence, for example (see that's my SURPRISE evidence and I had to spring it early, damn you.) But I'd always heard Mayer was gay, so I was just kind of curious why people thought that he was (I mean whether it was something he'd said in interviews or whatever.) Not that it matters in the slightest. Just idle curiousity on my part.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i have no idea either, honestly (and feel silly speculating about it). that title is SO provocative, though (and perfect too!) so i couldn't resist.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Did I learn that sechs (sex) was six in German in one night?!?!?! I learned in ONE MINUTE! Every commercial was for some text messaging system or cell phone icon or whatever that went SEX-SEX-SEX-SEX-SEX while flashing the number SIX over and over (sometimes the number seven was put in for a switcheroo)!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

sechs...
sieben...
acht...
neun...
zehn!!

dude i am SO at this gig!

geeta (geeta), Friday, 30 January 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

obv

geeta (geeta), Friday, 30 January 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

can i also say how glad i am that this isn't gonna be at APT?

geeta (geeta), Friday, 30 January 2004 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Sind Sie einsam? Wollen Sie heiße FRAUEN treffen? SIE KÖNNEN! WÄHLSCHEIBE SECHS SECHS SIEBEN SECHS SECHS! Sie werden sich freuen, den Sie machten!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 January 2004 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually Mayer only had nice things to say about the APT and crowds in NYC. I got the impression it was his fav part of the American tour (although this might have had something to do with it being the first stop on said tour, I imagine by the end it could be a little exhausting.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 30 January 2004 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm curious about this Volume place; it seems they have a good booker, getting Kompakt/Rephlex and Dizzee in the first two months. I might go tonight for Thomas and Eric. Has anyone been?

Magic City (ano ano), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. Why does APT always get such a bad rap? They absolutely have the best taste in NYC as far as folks they bring in/over to play. It's a small space, sure, but it still beats hearing someone like Mayer at Bowery Ballroom or something.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus, just about everyone who comes over to play there digs it . Disclaimer: No, I don't work for APT, but many friends DJ there/work there.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

does anybody know about an LA date??

vahid (vahid), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

SICK

vahid (vahid), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

They're touring in Europe afterward... don't think dates are confirmed yet though.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

agreed that apt has a wicked booker, and they pay/treat djs extremely well. however, the basement space is tiny and badly set up for actually having events and drink prices are verging on exorbitant.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 30 January 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

3.19 LOS ANGELES, CA
Echo

So Vahid...spare another ride? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 30 January 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I might actually try and make it out to NYC for this. No guarantees though. But still . . . that lineup . . . [[faints]]

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 30 January 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Aphex Twin actually a good DJ? What sort of stuff does he even play?

aphex is a tremendous dj, actually. he plays an insanely exhausting set of jungle, old acid, etc. it's pretty relentless and you can catch pieces of his tunes, but they're reworked into a more or less nonstop rush. i think he throws in lots of old early 90's hardcore type stuff too.

francis (droidboy), Friday, 30 January 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

bogdan does something similar, i believe.

francis (droidboy), Friday, 30 January 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i really need to move to one of the coasts.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Friday, 30 January 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm doing some couch-hunting right now but once I have one pinned down I am so fucking there.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

(hooray Jet Blue!)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

matos you can sleep in my barn if you'd like. i'd even put down hay.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

but you're not in NYC, dude.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

matos and strongo re-enact weak become heroes, march 2004, chewing gum, sorted.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

it's going to fucking be JUST LIKE THAT TOO

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(I am getting more excited about this by the minute, it's insane. Actually, I probably just need to eat lunch.)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

At 4:30?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

If I wasn't so sure whether or not I'm even gonna be employed I would think about coming to NYC too. I could see Luomo the NEXT DAY even. Crazzzy.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, at 4:30. busy busy busy.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

LUOMO THE NEXT DAY?!?!

oh wait, he's playing Seattle too. nevermind. (down, boy)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

D*()U_*(@#HNU@#*)(Y@)_@!~@)Y*)_*()~!!!!!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, me too

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Tickets in advance for the NYC gig -> Any leads on how one acquires tickets if one resides five hours outside NYC and poppin' in one afternoon in February is out of the question?

nader (nader), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

How big is the NYC venue? Is this really going to sell out?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm thinking it will sell out once word is out.

You can buy tickets for the Dizzee Rascal gig @ Volume on Ticketweb.com, so maybe Mayer and Co will go up on sale there soon.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 05:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Btw, is Mayer really gay or is that just rumor?

ooh, i hope so! i hope so!

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

MF Gill - thanks for the TicketWeb.com scoop - I'll keep my eyes peeled!

And in the meantime I'll try and convince my upper west side residing gal pal to make the box office trek - assuming Volume has a box office...

nader (nader), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm. anyone got an available NYC couch?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 5 February 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

jason m (jason m), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be there but I'm skipping Miami this year. (haha "skipping"--only been there once, in 2000)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Friday, 6 February 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

so any news on available tickets for this? (if this sells out - since, revoke my teutonic house merit badge if you will, i am really going for soundmurderer - i am going to go into full on "junglists against perpetrators" rant mode.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 9 February 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I would sleep with whoever to get to go to Miami.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 9 February 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo, check yr email

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 9 February 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

man, this looks good. how would one get to volume by subway? i'm in manhattan and am brooklyn-ignorant.

joseph (joseph), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Take the L to Bedford Avenue, walk north until you hit North 13th, then walk west until you get to Wythe (about 2 blocks).

hstencil, Monday, 9 February 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

sweeeeet. thanks hstencil!

and it's the saturday my spring break starts so i don't think i'm expected to DJ that night either. i have no reason NOT to go!

joseph (joseph), Monday, 9 February 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I've contacted Volume via its Web site and called them (naturally they're VM is full...) both to no avail.

So as far as advanced tickets go, at least to date, this looks like a job for NYC ILXers!

nader (nader), Thursday, 12 February 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

oops: their not they're

there there

nader (nader), Thursday, 12 February 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Officially announced on pollstar:
http://www.pollstar.com/tour/searchall.pl?By=Venue&Content=BNYBRV1&PSKey=Y&Date=03/13/04

I emailed a contact at Volume regarding tickets but haven't heard anything yet. I'll pass along any info if I get it.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 13 February 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Tix should be on sale "within the next week"

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 14 February 2004 01:28 (twenty-two years ago)

what do SF people know about pre-buying tickets?? does club six do that? (alex??)

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

My source says: "Hey Aaron - the tix should be on sale on ticketweb by tonight and at Other music within the next few days."

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

not sure who is throwing the party in SF but, in case you didn't know, Plasticman and Mark One have been added to the Rephlex tour to support the grime comp they're putting out...

heywood jablomi (heywood), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron W has solid sources: http://www.ticketweb.com/user/?region=nyc&query=detail&event=496921

nader (nader), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

And I've got three tickets! Suh-flippin-weet!

nader (nader), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Vahid, I bought the tickets at the door of Club Six for the November Kompakt show, BECAUSE BPM (in Hayes Valley) who usually sells advance tickets for Club Six shows never had any (apparently Club Six never provided 'em with any). Aquarius was also supposed to be selling advance tickets, but I never had the chance to swing by and check. Anyway I'd think that either shop won't start selling them until a week before the show and I would be surprised if Aquarius isn't selling them in this case (given the AQ love for a lot of the Rephlex artists.) It's a big space, though, so I'd be kinda be suppressed if it sells out.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

FYI - Other Music just mentioned this show in their latest newsletter and said they will be selling tickets at their store.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 26 February 2004 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'M GOING.

i am genuinely excited about this.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I am jealous. Mayer plays here in July at least.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

So do I do the muy estupido thing and wear my raver pants?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm wearing whiffle pants, so yes.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Officially the social event of the season. I'll be wearing my new Vera Wang nightgown.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 12 March 2004 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought we had all agreed to dress like Dieter from Sprockets.

nader (nader), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

where does one even buy glowsticks?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The drugstore?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 12 March 2004 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I bet either Abracadabra (costume store) or one of the gazillion Rickey's stores in the city. Or maybe a party supply store.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

done and done, then.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 March 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I had tickets to this and then I found out my girlfriend's friend is getting married that day. I fucking hate the lot of you.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 12 March 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

ugh since i seem to be coming down with whatever my moms has right now i might be a little nauturally screwed & chopped tomorrow

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 12 March 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i am so sick and hopped up on cold meds that you could put total 3 on repeat, flick my bedroom light switch on and off and tell me that i was at an exclusive reinhard voigt show and i would be none the wiser.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

so i guess the vaporub is fair play either way.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

This is what it says on the medication I'm taking right now (for my ear! still!):

"This Medicine May Lower Your Ability To Fight Off Infections. Avoid Contact With People Who Have Contagious Diseases."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Just don't shake anyone's hand... or weiner.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll wear a haz-mat suit tomorrow night mike

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 13 March 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 13 March 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, i'll be there. not sure who shift is - iirc he's from the promoter's crew.

disco stu (disco stu), Saturday, 13 March 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i really need to officially change my pseudonym

tricky disco (disco stu), Saturday, 13 March 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

it's 4 a.m. in Chicago - just now home from the Kompakt night (we get Rephlex on the 17th) - and it was, surprise surprise, amazing. Have fun tomorrow night New York!!

also, fyi: apparently the Kompakt 100 release will be Kompakt artists remixing tracks from the label (like the second disc on that Putting the Morr... comp from a few years ago). Promos should be ready to go in about six weeks -- woo and also hoo! OK, back to my Chicago dog and chili cheese fries (which I will regret in the morning...)

I hear it's gonna be crazy tonight... being advised to show up early, so, uh, passing along the info.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 13 March 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ROCK

The Chicago set was great. Mayer was kind of a surprise; very full-on and banging for most of the set. Not exactly what I was expecting, but still a whole lotta fun. I wanted to see what it would be like to dance to some of the mellower/poppier stuff that makes up his mix cds, but there wasn't much on display. I'm no expert on this stuff, but the only track I recognized from his set was Frank Martiniq's "Adriano", as heard on the Immer cd. I think I actually liked Superpitcher's set a bit more. It was a tad more diverse, had a nice flow to it, and there was a great middle section made up of fun stompy, glammy stuff; great to dance to. The only thing I'm sure he played was some Ricardo Villalobos cut at the beginning of his set; wish I knew what some of those other tracks were. Yeah, I had a blast.

I'll be curious to read the reports from the New York set...

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 14 March 2004 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I just remembered, the last song of Mayer's set was the Superpitcher cover of "Baby's On Fire". Yeah, forgot about that one. X amount of niceness.

Broheems (diamond), Sunday, 14 March 2004 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

omg fun.

my legs are sore from doing the plastikman "ping-pong" squat-dance... i left a little early.. around 3:50. anyone know what time it went on until?

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 14 March 2004 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

haha 4:30 AM - I'm home earliest so I get first gab
here's how it went until then, roughly:

the BIG room:
pre 10:30 ???
10:30 Miss Kitten
12:00 Superpitcher
2:00 Michael Mayer

the siDE room:
10:30 Mark One
Plasticman
Bogdan
Plasticman (traded off)
Bogdan
2:30 Soundmurderer

representing for ILM: moi, Simon, Geeta, Andy, Michael Daddino, Jess, Matos, Phil, Aaron, Mike Rubin + friends/family (sorry if I forget anyone - it's late)

both rooms had their moments so we could and did easily switch back n forth
overall main pleasure was the sound, conducive to hearing the tunes right
so even the Forward>> stuff sounded good, if a bit baffling initially to the crowd: fractured minimal tech2step IDM innit (not that big a break from early Aphex, Black Dog and U-ziq when you get down to it)

Miss Kitten is a great DJ ! biggest surprise of the night in that she melded minimal offkilter synchopation tracks to powerful acid-techno-house effect.
plus for fun she played Gorillaz - "Clint Eastwood (Ed Case mix)" and "Blue Monday"

Superpitcher & Mayer both amazing as expected - you could take any portion of their sets and vibe-out to it - as y'all know Mayer is a master of layering so his mix transitions are highlights and then he slams in the new one to a next plateau. part of the pleasure with Superpitcher was recognising his own trademark-melancholia underpining many tracks - totally recognisable: weltschmertz? the lone universal

all of us brock out to Soundmurderer for a while - some killa tunes ya hear?
but the highlight of the night for me was when Plasticman dropped Terror Danjah - "Creepy Crawler" (or "Frontline (Creepy Crawler mix)" carnt tell the difference)
what a baad tune!!!! would have dragged the others in but didn't want to miss a second of it

and I got to meet Peter Shapiro & Superpitcher (the latter in the bathroom line - hahaha)

anyway, I'm sure the others will have lots more to add - I go bed now.. . .

ha Phil ya beat me to it !

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 14 March 2004 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Miss Kitten was great, Superpitcher was excellent from what I heard of his set. Can anyone provide some titles of tracks he played?

Sadly, the whole night was tarnished for me as my girlfriend's wallet was apparently stolen right from under our noses.....she had literally just bought a drink and a minute later decided to go back for water and the wallet was gone. Needless to say, if you found a wallet for someone named Jaimie, drop me an email.

Anyway, we left after Superpitcher's set due to our foul moods (although I was horribly gutted not seeing Mayer in action), but musically, the night was top notch!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 14 March 2004 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

omg just got home, so so heavy last night. i have a long rant i wrote on the train coming home while still a wee bit drunk/stoned/dazed from dancing for 6 hours, but if it makes any sense i'll type it up later.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 14 March 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds like there was spiffness and I am the happy for it. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 14 March 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

okay here goes:

started off at a simmer: superpitcher burbling ambient stuff until he finally broke out with "i think about you". from there it seemed to slow burn for a while, gradually increasing in intensity and speed. after around 45 mins/an hour he was in full on banger mode, droping a couple of the speichers and an AWESOME shuffletech remix of kosheen's "hide u". after about two hours mayer just sauntered up on the platform and assumed the position as spitcher's last record was playing. mayer's a total pimp: playing to the crowd, doing inane little gyrating dances, beconing those around the decks with come-hither motions. they both LOOKED great, aksel in crisp white button up, chain smoking, michael in a white t-shirt with a picture of 70s michael jackson on it that said "free michael" with a speicher logo sitcker over his face. neither were afraid of a little bump'n'grind themselves, and when they hugged at the end it was very charming.

picking up in the middle, mayer was straight banging for like an hour or so: hard techno, electro, shuffle, some old house...i don't think he dropped a full vocal track until 45 mins before his set ended. at about the half-way mark for mayer we wandered over to the rephelx room to see soundmurderer, who's set unfortunately only felt about 30 mins long. but the vibe was HEAVY: mixed-race, mixed-gender, small room, chest-caving bass, more than an erm whiff of herb. mark one/plasticman were also good, but they went on too long, i think. have to admit the dubsteppy stuff sounded great over a big system, and when they dropped "shox wave" (i think) it made my knees quake. still, probably the closest i'll ever get to an eski-rave (minus the rapping of course), though a bit too "smooth" (mixed on a laptop). (simon r said he thought he saw zed bias there, dressed like a black metal drummer.) the rest of the rephlex stuff, i am not shocked to say, was utter crap. woody woodpecker breaks and "whoomp there it is" and IDM Prince covers...just fuck off.

luckily matos saved us from this by telling us mayer was playing a villalobos track from alcachofa (maybe the same one he was playing in chicago?), except he was also mixing the "yeahs" from the lcd soundsystem song overtop. (sadly the full track never materialized.) mayer then played for the next 1.5 hours or so what i can say with certainty was one of the best house/techno sets i've ever seen. there were peaks so noisy i thought my skull was going to collapse in on itself. he played a muscular remix of the "babys on fire" cover, and the remix of quark's "i walk", and inbetween he played a track so overdriven it made vitalic sound like the field mice. he played something with an swesome clonking steel drum groove that had an almost reggae/2-step feel (think new horizon's "slamdown"), and a track that sounded like it was disassembling and reassembling itself as it played like lego blocks. (the perfect answer to colin's request for rhytmic change-up on the "is dance dead?" thread, because when the reticular 4/4 snare finally dropped after all the shuddering and shifting it sounded like someone shouting "GO!" at you after talking for five minutes in Swahili.) he closed with a storming tech-house track that sampled "le freak", and there was something with a pronounced moroder feel that i thought was going to burst into "i feel love" at any second.

he then played two "encores" because we refused to let him leave the stage. the first was a track off the new spitcher lp, and then he played the remix of "perfect lovers", and as those cheesy classical strings rose up against the cheesy projected sunrise backdrops it was gaudy and hilarious and totally uplifiting. i danced like i havent since college, i screamed, i threw the devil sign more than once. 10 out of 10 for everything. please, please see them if you get the chance.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 14 March 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

did kittin play the big brown titties track?? i never did find out what that is. also does she still have a shaved head?!

toby (tsg20), Sunday, 14 March 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

she had kind of a close cropped thing going on...i guess now that i think about it it looked like a shaved head growing in.

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 14 March 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh wow that sounds amazing. Finishing on Perfect Lovers obv cheesy as fuck but also pretty much what I want to hear at the end of a night.

Ricardo (RickyT), Sunday, 14 March 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

mayer's nyc set sounds very similar to what he played in chicago. best night out in ages...nice post jess!! that kosheen remix is by the wighnomy bros and sadly i don't think it's even been released. i knew it was going to be a good night when superpitcher stepped up to the decks and dropped one two three (no gravity).

BTW, Mayer = heterosexual. He's got a girlfriend. Aksel is straight as well.

In this case, techno androgyny doesn't equal homosexuality.

Also, Strongo, agreed...it was an awesome show..it was great to finally hear that rex the dog track Mayer opened with played loud as fuck.

Nick P, Sunday, 14 March 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha the QUESTION is finally answered!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

damn

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil that only makes our crushes only slightly more inevitably unrequited than before.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The embrace mentioned above was reasonably torrid.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess' recount is pretty much OTM.

Dancing to Kompakt in a social setting I think has already deepened my somewhat dilettantish interest in that stuff. The new Superpitcher album feels deeper, more obsessive than it did a few days ago.

The Soundmurderer set pretty much proved to me what I've suspected for years: I don't know how to dance to jungle at all. There's too much to dance to, there's so many beats and accents to choose from to follow that dancing to any of them seems really arbitrary. If I watched the other dancers to see how they negotiated the music I might have gotten a clue, but I had to close my eyes throughout most of it because those fucking strobe lights made it impossible to move, even walk through that room with bumping into people.

Wow, I just miss dancing with people. I haven't done it YEARS.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

haha just cuz they're straight doesnt mean i dont want kompakt slash right now

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha so Jess has this revitalized your faith in the healthiness of the dance scene?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i dunno about "the scene", but my kompakt fanboyishness finally seems justified. mayer has to get some props for getting the majority of a williamsburg crowd dancing to non-electro.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

you are all lucky bastards. i saw jeff mills in LA last night (and i've already seen mayer) and i'm still jealous. actually when jeff took the stage at 1:30 all i was thinking was "i wish reinhard voigt had opened for this instead of these tedious progressive tech-trance fukkers".

vahid (vahid), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

also i'm really upset that mayer isn't going to make it to san francisco. hopefully matthew dear will be playing during bogdan raczynski and not during soundmurder's set. (did anybody catch matthew dear?)

vahid (vahid), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh. Sounds like a ride I'm glad I didn't ask from you that time, then.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

or wasn't he there in NYC?

x-post: ehh, i don't think you'd have liked it, ned. on the plus side, tylero somehow managed to spot my t-shirt in the crowd! ilx in effect, coast-to-coast raving!

vahid (vahid), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Woo!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a good night (Mayer and Plasticman were highlights), but I thought the vibe was kind of thin. Way too many people were just standing around while great dance music was being played and the sound in the Rephlex room was patchy. I'd like to see Mayer do his thing in front of a crowd that isn't afraid to be seen having fun (how were so many able to resist that bass?).

mmmmsalt (Graeme), Monday, 15 March 2004 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

if anything I didn't pay ENOUGH for the plane ticket to NYC

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 15 March 2004 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo so fucking otm it hurts. daddino and he and geeta and I dancing in a circle during Mayer's first peak = (as I said at the time) best ILM thread ever

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 15 March 2004 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

also during the big noisy bit near the end Mayer fucking WINDMILLED, Pete Townshend style! it ROCKED!

I have resolved that I am going out dancing in Seattle more often, because even if nothing will compare to that show (and I do not in any sense of my right mind think it will) I'd forgotten how GOOD it feels to do.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 15 March 2004 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

plus me + strongo + daddino going out for White Castle at 5am = ROXOR

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 15 March 2004 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, I had tickets to this and everything but couldn't make it because something came up with my girlfriend and I would've totally been in the doghouse if I went... :-(

Anyone minidisc this or something? (urgh!)

haha well you know white castle can do weird, unexpected things to a mans insides

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

(and i will leave that at that)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 15 March 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

very impressed by both superpitcher and mayer's dancing skills (especially the way mayer does a sort of george formby knee-bend thing) -and lots of movement from the hips too. They were a lot more engaging and, if you will, crowd-oriented than i had expected. Although I have to agree with mmmmsalt on the tameness of the crowd -the same thing happened at the Luomo gig there on Thursday, a very sedate bunch altogether...

Conor (Conor), Monday, 15 March 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

that Luomo gig was excellent as music and lame as crowd-activity, but I think that's in part because it was (a) announced last-minute and (b) probably populated by post-WMC'ers who were plain exhausted. maybe not, though.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 15 March 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I, too, was saddened more people didn't reciprocate Mayer und Spitcher's obvious love for us. Normally I'd say the Kompakt sound's well-suited for a phyically passive-yet-intellectually attentive listen, but Mayer, in particular, was dropping the type of stormers that I'd have thought would bring the riddim to more people's feet.

That said, what an effin great night! Definitely worth the price of admission (and lodging and driving to y fro Boston) - simply fantastisch!

nader (nader), Monday, 15 March 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

What kind of stuff did Luomo play, Matos? I'm considering seeing him in Boston tomorrow.....

The Kompakt night in NYC still has my head spinning, hopefully Mayer will decide to come back when he's about to release his full length.

On a related note, anyone notice on the "booking" section of the Kompakt website, they now have pictures of all of their artists? Nice to finally put a picture to some names.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 15 March 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

he mostly just remixed the fuck out of The Present Lover to in some cases extraordinary effect. his relick of "Shelter" was Shep Pettibone-esque

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 15 March 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Someday, somewhere, somebody will call me "Shep Pettibone-esque"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 15 March 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Mayer and Superpitcher were amazing. Does anyone know if Mayer played a Kelis accapella - and if so, over what track?

Thanks...

James Jung, Monday, 15 March 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Kelis: yes. Over which track: dunno.

Why did I think it was an M.Mayer remix? (Perhaps it was the sleep deprivation voices in my head.) Or was it...wishful thinking?

nader (nader), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Nader - yeah my memory is pretty vague as well.

James Jung, Monday, 15 March 2004 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Also,

Does anybody know if Mayer played his mix of "Welcome Back Kotter?"

james jung, Monday, 15 March 2004 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

did anyone noticed a sound crew in a back corner at the controls ?

it seemed that Volume hires a Sound System including sound guys and equipment on a special arrangement for each gig.

this time they were 3 or four dreadlocked rastafarians AND their 4 sets of speakers.

the reason i think so is if anyone have seen this particular speaker's design like they had em at Volume on saturday

you can see exactly the same king of speakers in Jamaica

my friend made a picture when he was there recently

3 levels,
subs
mids
tweeters
actually 3 rows of tweeters, maybe 30 or 40 of them on top of each out of 4 speaker sets

Looked fantastic
sounded superb
Sound System, Jamaican Style

serge, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

in the Rephlex room or the Kompakt room?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

in a big one, the kompak room

4 huge sets of them
about 10 feet high 6-7 wide and deep

i am not proud to say i stuck my head in one

Kompakt over Jamaican Soundsystems. Tracks that sound like Lego blocks. Tracks heavier than Vitalic? What next: they were giving away pure MDMA at the door? :)

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"that Luomo gig was excellent as music and lame as crowd-activity, but I think that's in part because it was (a) announced last-minute and (b) probably populated by post-WMC'ers who were plain exhausted. maybe not, though."

-right on both counts, I think. Although there is something in the theory that the Williamsburg massive just don't really know what to do at these kinds of events, and treat djs like bands, to be watched rather than danced to. (I'm thinking more about Mayer and co. here)

Anyone at Luomo last night in the Sullivan Room? Good grief! Even better than the Volume night, the version he did of "tessio" could plausibly be called "prismatic" -almost makes you want to resurrect the phrase "shimmering shards" (an old Smash Hits reference there -it was one of their stock phrases for mocking egregiously pretentious music journalism). Still, though. Blimey.

Conor (Conor), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

grrrr. now i'm jealous.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

true about willliambsburgian crowd

they are a bit out of date and vibe

or maybe it is something about Volume that makes people passive
i was there 3 times and it was the same vibe deficiency
i am not saying parties went bad
bad crowds need some attitude adjustment))))

serge, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

or maybe it is something about Volume that makes people passive

The crowd was definitely a factor...loads of people standing and staring at Superpitcher and then applauding competent but pedestrian mixes into album tracks (not a dis on Superpitcher, but its not like he was beat juggling with his elbows on three decks).

One of the people I was there with reckons the real problem at Volume is the cement floors. Difficult to dance on for extended periods and they suck your energy out.

mmmmsalt (Graeme), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"or maybe it is something about Volume that makes people passive"

Totally agree - the club is alright but I think that the cement floors, bright white walls and the high ceilings just give it a real sterile atmosphere. I thought the overall vibe at APT last fall (Mayer/Voigt)was much better - just raw and kicking, people (especially near the end) seemed much more into it.

Still though, Saturday was an amazing night and NYC needs more like it - cheers to Volume and Other Music for hosting the boys from Kompakt.

James Jung, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i've been to volume several times -- i love the space -- and i've never had a problem dancing for marathon amounts of time, sober or not. i think it depends where you are on the floor, and what crowd you're with. with my posse (a rotating cast of ILM-affiliated friends, buddies from back-in-the-day, etc) the vibe was pretty goddamn unstoppable. i was with people i really liked who were REALLY TOTALLY PSYCHED to be there, and that really made all the difference.

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

and i'd MUCH rather attend an event at volume than at APT. i don't like APT at all, but i still go there because i'm a sap & they book good stuff (i'll be there on the 23rd for the first ghostly/spectral sessions event -- come with!)

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

as far as cement walls and floors
let me tell you
it is THE BEST sound invironment.

you can read about it in any book on sound setup or HIFI stuff.
When you bang your fist on the wall and produce a sound-
thats the dominant "room" sound frequency so to speak.

cement always improves bass and also it is much better for other spectrum cause it will absorb echos,
an opposite to sheetrock or wood walls which will create secondary sound reflections of any kind.

i live in a apartment in a building made out of concrete blocks.
sound is amazing here

high ceilings in volume can be a problem but good sound engeneer can take care of it just by analyzing geometry and proportions of the space

my guess would be-
vibe is getting thiner because there no windows and because of the cigaret smoke

serge, Tuesday, 16 March 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

omg fun.
my legs are sore from doing the plastikman "ping-pong" squat-dance... i left a little early.. around 3:50. anyone know what time it went on until?

Maybe I was dancing in the wrong part of the room (or just the wrong room period), but the crowd, and its lack of responsiveness to Superpitcher's and Mayer's sets, was decidedly underwhelming...so much for Boston crowds having the biggest stick up their bums.

Tim Xavier's a Brooklyn guy I believe, so yes.

This night was great up until my then-girlfriend's wallet got pickpocketed right at the bar. We left right before Mayer came on.

I'm still sad I didn't go to this, but considering I did get laid off three months later it's probably for the best.

my impression was lots of people wanting to dance, and some of them actually doing it. it was lots of fun, regardless.

I need more opportunities to my rave pants in public.

Tons of people were dancing, at least during the late hour when Mayer did Mayer. I remember Superpitcher sounding really minimal and moody and pensive, and then Mayer coming on and spraying jelly all over the place. The area around the flatbed (!!!!!!!) didn't lack for kineticism in the slightest.

That was a really big night for New York. Interesting to think what it spun out. I know the Wolf + Lamb guys (who throw totally grrrrrreat parties big into minimal) said it convinced them and everybody they know to get after it.
