Has anyone heard this at all? It's mentioned in the Guardian guide today.

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 31 January 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Release dates, info, etc?

Nick H (Nick H), Saturday, 31 January 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooooh! Mikey's getting all Let's Get It On on us, then??

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 31 January 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

What does the Guardian guide say about it? I think I read somewhere that Mr. Skinner's new stuff was 100% lackluster, but I'LL be the judge of that, thank you very much.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 31 January 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

has anyone got the new Grafiti track 'Dedicated' in their slsk folders yet?

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 31 January 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

We did this last month too, except I got the name right.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 31 January 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

A dj played me two tracks and it made my explode more than the first one.

Ian Grey (Ian_G), Sunday, 1 February 2004 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was called "Fit But You Know It." Whatever, just details.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 1 February 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

has anyone got the new Grafiti track 'Dedicated' in their slsk folders yet?

I don't do Slsk but I own the record. It made me seriously question the widely shared opinion that Grafiti is the work of Mr Skinner. It doesn't sound like him all that much...

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 1 February 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

that's cos he knows we're onto him

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 1 February 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait a minute. What the hell is "Grafiti"? A Mike Skinner alias?

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 1 February 2004 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

And why hasn't ILM ever discussed this matter before?

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 1 February 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it had been discussed. What Is The Problem was the first Graffiti single, and it polarised. Didn't it?

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 1 February 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

James, I'm only quoting the Guardian;

A collaboration with Coldplay's Chris Martin is apparently in the works, while a new single (the brilliantly entitled You're Fit And You Know You Are) looks sure to widen his appeal still further.

It's a short piece about his gig tomorrow at the Astoria.

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 1 February 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

THE SECOND this gets out on SoulSeek, LET ME KNOW!!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 1 February 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

awful title

robin (robin), Sunday, 1 February 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Have there been any Streets tracks since the LP? "streets" is hard to search on slsk.

Maxwell von Bismarck (maxwell von bismarck), Sunday, 1 February 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a 12" on Locked On from last year I think that is "produced by The Streets". It's LOCKED 047 and it's by The Beats. A: The Cigarette Beat, AA: The Barbwire Beat.

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 1 February 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Maxwell, there were the B-sides, "All Got Our Runnins" and "Give Me My Lighter Back", and he did a mix called "Les Rocks" or something which had him freestyling over various hip-hop and garage songs which was a bit rubbishly mixed but loads of fun. I think you can download it from base58.com.

Nick H (Nick H), Sunday, 1 February 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Also the remix of Thrilla by Cassius and Ghostface Killah, he adds a verse to his version. It's pretty cool. Mike Skinner and Ghostface on one track!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 1 February 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Was the track "Streets Score" pre- or post-OPM?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 1 February 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

slightly pre as it was the flip of 'Has It Come To This' i think - apparently there is a version with vocals??

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

the mix Nick H mentions was actually a mix Skinner did that was showcased on LesInRocks, a French music webzine. I think the mix was already available on Skinner's own site before that and not sure if it has a proper title but it is is seriously excellent (i love the idea of him DJing with a mic attached to his cap from which he can drop his rhymes over tracks) despite some amateurish mixing. no longer available from my site but slsk should avail

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently there is a version with vocals??

B-side to the 'Don't Mug Yourself' CD1.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 2 February 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

You can also listen to it on the Streets site under sneaky previews. Or at least you could last week.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmph. Not mentioned on the Streets site as far as I can tell. I think it's a hoax, link me an mp3 and maybe I'll change my mind.

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Nm, he replaced it with that "It's too late" remix thing. Sorry.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anyone see The Streets at the Astoria last night? Word is he's been feasting on celebrity pies a little, but played a handful of new tracks. Details please!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

'You're Fit And You Know You Are' is the only one of these prospective correct titles which makes the most sense (in cultural context) and I really hope that's actually it

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking that.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

But why can no one get the title right?

'You're Fit But You Know It'
'You're Fit And You Know It'
'You're Fit And You Know You Are'
'Fit But She Knows It'

Any other suggestions?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

If the chorus isn't actually "If you're fit and you know it clap your hands" I will cry.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

If it doesn't, I bet the 12" remixed GRIME 2OHOH4 version will have it on there somewhere.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

"Fit But You Know It" and "Fit But She Knows It" make perfect sense to me, but maybe that's because one particular old frind of mine used the phrase quite regularly (meaning an unattractive over-confidence borne of an awareness of a person's own attractiveness...).

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

If the chorus isn't actually "If you're fit and you know it clap your hands" I will cry.

I was thinking more along the lines of singing "you're fit and you know you are" to the tune of "Go West", personally. Yesterday's Evening Standard had some of the lyrics in the review, but I left it on the tube.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i was hoping it wouldn't be to the tune of 'Go West', i couldn't imagine that being a good record (tho the original tune is fine)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the Go West-tune 'you're shit and you know you are' football chant was the layer I liked.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

but this would sound awful coming from Skinner really wouldn't it? i mean think about it. i'm coming round to the idea that 'Fit And She Knows It' is better.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep hoping the actual title is "You're Fit And You Know You Are Fit, Fit-Boy"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

From da NME.....

During Mike Skinner’s headline slot, he premiered five new songs, ’Dry Your Eyes’, ’Blinded By The Light’, ’Could Well Be In’, ’It Was Supposed To Be So Easy’ and new single ’You’re Fit But You Know It’.

Some of the lyrics to the single run: "I’m not trying to pull you / even though I would like to / I think you’re really fit / You’re fit but my gosh don’t you know it?".

gallantseagull, Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh boy.

(*reminds self that lyrics are meant to be listened and not read.*)

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 5 February 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i am currently listening to the new streets album in its entirety

absolutely NO soulseeking sorry

uk release: may 10th
single release: april 26th

north america: tba

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the single IS "fit but you know it" btw. on first listen it's fucking wicked - def. the album standout. record's blaring out of someone else's office right now but i'll check back in when i get my one (and only) spin.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope "what is he thinking" is about Stuart Maconie.

(Actually I don't. At all.)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I just hope it doesn't suck. I'm sick and tired of eagerly-anticipated new albums sucking so badly.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark P, how'd you get a copy? Are you, like, friends with Mike Skinner or something?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

four tracks in and not really feeling this at all so far. everything feels a little half-formed and tentative.

best track so far is maybe "could well be in" which concists of a v. simple, slow 2/4 rhythm and three recurring piano chords. very wiffly, but sweet chorus: "i saw this thing on itv the other week that said if she plays with her hair she's probably keen"

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

(snrub i work in the music industry)

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

there's no real pageantry to the beginning of this record. it kinds of just limps into a start, and the fact that three (2, 4 and 5) of the first five tracks are super slow isn't helping...

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"fit but you know it" - built on a guitar chord sample that kind of pogos, dare i say, "parklife" style. i could see this being a really divisive track. it's by far the most uptempo thing on the record so far and could be fun at high volumes but it's also very samey across its four minutes

big criticism so far is that nothing has been musically as deep as opm. this could be more a function of me listening quietly on computer speakers at my desk but everything feels kind of tranquilized and one-note

reserving judgement on the quality of the raps though, as i'm listening while doing a few other things on the side

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"dry your eyes" = strings, another simple on/off beat and (!!) DSPED acoustic guitars. also very slow, country balladesque tempo. chorus, sung bit: "dry your eyes mate, i know its hard to take but her mind has been made up". very pretty, to be honest, but again i could see people hating this.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

markp if u knew how much i liked OPM u'd soulseek/linewire
whatever immdeiately!! can't believe u have a copy.
good luck to you. tell us it gets better as it goes along!

cant believe also, that he actually *has* that many new trax recorded, considering he did zero nu stuff at glastonbury.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

"empty cans" = gated military beat, ominous synth bit, mikey starts on about how "everyone wanted this to all go wrong for me from the start" and stays tetchy, ranting on about his broken tv and useless mates until around the 3 minute point, where the track *rewinds itself* and starts again with the gated military beat thing, except now over the synths we get these ascending major piano chords that colour the song completely differently. mike's on about broken tvs and friends again, but he's sunnier, more optimistic, more forgiving and everything's suddenly quite vibey

beautiful sung chorus: "it's the end of something i did not want to end / the beginning of hard times to come / but something that was not meant to be is done / and this is the start of what was"

by the end of this now eight minute track, mike's launched into his Final Message, paraphrase: "no one in this life has your back but you, you're in control, you'd better lose yourself in the music the moment you better never etc etc"

yeah it's all very angel/devil on yr shoulder and heavy-handed in a way, but i got a little lump in my throat nonetheless

great ending - hope i can come round to the rest of the album

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"fit but you know it" = elastica's "line up" + mpc2000 + helium + a pinch of benny hill

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm digesting that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

upon second and third listens i am picking up on the lyrical threads and realizing that this is very much a story album centering on the loss of a thousand pounds! doh.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, got the US version (out May 18). as reported on NEW STREETS, it's a bit boring but also rather intriguing, as if the surface semi-blandness has lots going on beneath it. we shall see, but for now it's promising. hopefully mark p's lyrical threads pickup has taken off with multiple listens--any word, mp?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw him at the astoria and dry your eyes seemed great i just hope they don't let chris martin sing it

trevor johnson (trevor johnson), Thursday, 19 February 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
http://members.rogers.com/mark.pytlik/granddont.jpg

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 12 March 2004 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

well it's better than the new beta band cover

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Friday, 12 March 2004 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim, search Burning Flames - "If You're Happy" ! you'll love it!
(might be hard to find though. if so, I'll hook you up someday anyways)

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 12 March 2004 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

What is that? A bus stop?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 12 March 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Counting down to the inevitable Soulseek leak

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 12 March 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

... well the inevitable Soulseek fakes have started arriving, so it can't be long now. (i.e. if you see a file with length 5113799, don't get your hopes up. It's a loop of the chorus. Or something.)

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 12 March 2004 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

terrible title, terible artwork...

oh lordy.

piscesboy, Friday, 12 March 2004 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike's been very busy creating fakes for t'internet, apparently. So I can't believe I went to a playback of the new album and didn't write it up here - apologies to all.

Fwiw, here's a good track-by-track run-through from Iain Playlouder, who was sitting next to me at the time: http://www.playlouder.com/news/+theskinnertakesi/

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 12 March 2004 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the cover!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 12 March 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Cover looks like a long lost cut out bin album from some hip hop group circa 92, 93. Like Three Times Dope or Def Jef or something

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it looks better than that. Stays within the brand his previous releases established. Includes a street. Suggests waiting, longing. Class is established. Architecture is good.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 13 March 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, class is established, but doesn't some indefinable element about it look sort of flashy? Something really crisp and kind of blingy. Am I alone in thinking this? Previous releases = same thing.

I guess it's just nice design.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 13 March 2004 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i really like it, for all the reasons mentioned above.

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 13 March 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

well the fakes are up - on soulseek at least bearing the name of
'empty cans'= (" stick iy up your jacksy...i'm acting nasty")
like, thanks mike! still it beats madonna's fakes.

piscesboy, Sunday, 14 March 2004 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's an arresting, beautiful photo.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

It is nice, I have a thing for yellow reflected streetlight, very lonely.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you been to the turbine hall at the Tate Modern in the last few months, Ronan?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

No I've never been there at all. Was that a joke or a genuine question? Maybe I'll go next time I'm in London. (I may be round your way too in April I think!)

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

is the eliasson thing still on? i missed that by a week.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 15 March 2004 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck this record is completely great

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/exhibitions/eliasson/images/hallsun4.jpg

It will still be there in April - you should go.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh shit - no it won't. It finishes on the 21st March, according to the Tate website.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, it's Glasgow you're in in April - cool!

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes I think the weekend of April Fools possibly, my sister is bringing me over, she was saying friday-saturday but maybe I can try and go to optimo and do saturday-monday instead!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

We're going to LCD Soundsystem/2ManyDJs on Sat 3rd - you should get a ticket.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

:( I'm in london on april 1st!!!! :(

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

come a week later!

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god! I'll try and sort it out!

Gah that won't do at all cozen, what bad luck!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure I can. Your pro evolution soccer record will remain intact for a few more precious months

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

this has to leak for real soon!

adam west (adamwest), Monday, 15 March 2004 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

From the the-streets.co.uk mailing list:

Thought you would like to know that the first ever radio play of the new track, Fit But You Know It, is happening tonight!
Steve Lamacq will be playing it between 9.30 and 9.50 tonight on Radio 1 (97-99 FM) so tune in and have a listen. Also, the first ever showing of the new video will be on www.the-streets.co.uk later this week, so just giving you a heads up. We'll let you know exactly when its going up.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 15 March 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Good titles, good sleeve, good ideas, sounds promising. If I weren't into insane babble instead of pop music I might be well into Mikey's new stuff.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 15 March 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know him that well at all but that feels like the most controversial thing Momus has ever said

finally hearing the single on Radio 1 now. it's making me laugh a little, but i'm not sure of it's durability

stevem (blueski), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It's pretty great.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

the "don't touch me" bit was hilarious.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 15 March 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I really love the album too.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 15 March 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos, stop mocking poor, promo-less me!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 15 March 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

He is cruel. But he can be kind. I'm sure.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

don't be too sure

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

:-(

(Did the article get there in one piece?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

the album is totally sweet.

that is all i'll say for now.

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I just heard this on Lamacq and it sounds ridiculously similar to King Missile. Is this what all of his stuff sounds like?

anode (anode), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"'You're Fit And You Know You Are' is the only one of these prospective correct titles which makes the most sense (in cultural context) and I really hope that's actually it"

Yes, yes - and the guest vocalist should be Phil Mitchell....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

B-side: "You love it, you know you do"

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

why do the British people who have this album not post here??

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

it was the same with 'kish kash', it's just weird how only American critics come to gloat ;)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I already did my bit of mini-gloating, so meh. "Fit But You know It" is nothing whateoever like the rest of the album, it sounds like Madness and as such is lots of fun in a knees-up Parklife kinda way. It cuts the album in half, it's the "holiday" section of the album and the video is fucking brilliant - Mike picks up his holiday snaps from the developers and flicks through them while wandering around town, and all the snaps coma alive while he's looking at them. Must've cost a bloody fortune but it's worth it.

The rest of the album, garage fans, has left the dancefloor entirely. This I initially thought to be a bad thing, but I've changed my mind now and I think it's fantastic.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard it twice now, and I'm rather unconviced. I love OPM to bits, but I just don't hear many tunes on this album. It's sort of a concept album as it has recurring subjects and characters. Favourite track so far: What Is He Thinking.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Here it is, then. The new single from The Streets.

'Ere we go, two three four...

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

funny, that's precisely the discussion we had when we first heard it!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's push things backward, innit?

Momus (Momus), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

in the US, the Streets is generally received and categorized as UK hip hop. This means that reviewers point out that he's a crap MC, which is missing the point a bit. I think he's crap too, but for different reasons (terribly adolescent lyrics, aimless beats). This album does nothing to change my mind. In fact, I think he's got even worse.

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Has this leaked yet?

Also, the pop-up window for the video to 'Fit But You Know It' on The Streets website crashes my browser. Anyone got a direct link to it?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 21 March 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard it on the radio (how quaint!) earlier today. Yeah, pretty ropey Phil Daniels throwaway thing. I'm glad Charlie says it's atypical of the album.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 21 March 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

a radio edit of the single has leaked but so far it's kind of hard to find on slsk

adam west (adamwest), Monday, 22 March 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I quite like the single, but I think his singles are getting progressively less good, since "Let's push things forward" which was better than "Has it come to this"

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to hear this badly.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 22 March 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

OMM goes so far as to say, in a kind of two line preview :
'difficult second album? this one will stand as a classic'.
and who are we to argue?

piscesboy, Monday, 22 March 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

it sounds like Madness

Charlie OTM.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 22 March 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

when people said their promos were "watermarked," what did you mean? Is there a digital signal on them that is traceable to your unique copy of the promo?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 22 March 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard they were somehow encoded with your name/who you work for. Truth? That is some CIA shit.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 22 March 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

see i reckon you are an 8 or a 9 maybe even a 9 and a half in four beers time
first line from fit but don't you just know it wicked tune!
The Streets are BACK!!

Ricky Travis, Monday, 22 March 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, hi, Mike.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 22 March 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard they were somehow encoded with your name/who you work for. Truth?

Apparently. They claim there is some secret software that can tell where the mp3 came from. I'd be very curious to know how it works exactly. I know of a journalist who was "caught out" this way for leaking the Massive Attack album last year. He claimed innocense, however.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 22 March 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the version i have has very faint clipping in specific sections of specific songs. i'm skeptical abt digital watermarking but those imperfections are enough to worry me.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 22 March 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess the solution, if you can be bothered, is just to reencode it by passing it through some analogue stage. Maybe there's a bit of software out there that can automate this.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 22 March 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i have come round a lot more to the album, btw. i still think it's inferior to the original and that a lot of the raps are really weak and lazy, but the storyline motif is absolutely charming.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 22 March 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

nick re-encoding through analog would not get rid of the clipping. i suppose i could do some soundforge smoothery but i also really like my job...

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 22 March 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

lol, bolox can they tell where a MP3 came from! thats impossible without looking at download logs etc...say you put a MP3 on a CD then took it to your mates and he sent it out, or even a Cyber Cafe...it's just bolox! you can't examine a file to find where it was ripped! btw the new track kicks ass...just downloaded it

DaSpikey1, Monday, 22 March 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

For any who are still desperate to hear "Fit," and haven't, there's a tolerable one-channel radio-rip at said the gramophone, that will stay up for a few more days.

I think it's brilliantly fun: easygoing, clever, and full of whimsy. I like that the chorus is more straight-ahead pop than r&b, but can imagine that others will feel the opposite way. Am desperate to hear the album proper!

Sean M (Sean M), Monday, 22 March 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Can the clipping actually used to identify a unique copy, or just that it came from one batch of promos? Is it that sophisticated?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 22 March 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

bolox can they tell where a MP3 came from! thats impossible without looking at download logs etc.

Apparently some information is included in the CD that mere mortals cannot read. Like I said, I haven't a clue how it works and maybe I'm naive but I'd be surprised if it was nothing more than a smokescreen. EMI uses it on a large scale.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 22 March 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

not sure nick. i really doubt that the process would be that involved, but who knows.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 22 March 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

is it true that lady sovereign turns up on this tune ? if so it's presumably ace ?

fletcher dexter, Monday, 22 March 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate to be so lame, but for God's sake, could someone email me this mp3 when they get it? There is much rending of clothing and gnashing of teeth going on over here.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 22 March 2004 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

haha a concept album about paranoia, fucking up relationships and self pity.

how great is blinded by the light? (the only thing here remotely like weak become heroes btw)

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I would probably enjoy this if someone else was rapping about something less stupid.

subgenius (subgenius), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

say...?

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha that has to be The Streets counter-argument in a nutshell. Well done.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to download this, but now I can't. :(

Maybe I can find it on slsk.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

It is there.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got it. Whether I've moved it to my shared folder I can't quite remember, but I think I did.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll email it to anyone who wants it (and i've now got the stereo version): drop me a note ([email protected]).

Sean M (Sean M), Thursday, 25 March 2004 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Just heard the track for the first time, and I don't know if I adore it because it's brilliant, because it's ridiculous, or because I'm completely sauced, though I suspect it's the combo.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 25 March 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

My GOD, he is the KING of "grows on you."

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 25 March 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

heard the album a few times the other day -- i was astonished at how terrible it was. it's so slooooooooooow!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 25 March 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

so, totally different from the single, then?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 25 March 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i was going to be able to hear this and the new betas and now i cant. :[

at least i have the wiley.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i was going to hassle you about the new wiley but at least i got the streets JUST IN TIME

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 25 March 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i was gonna take care of the wiley overnight, actually, but then i got THE NEWS

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 03:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll confess! i'll give up all the names!...don't make me share a cell with that man

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 25 March 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard the album this week... it's pretty crappy. Kind of the worst element of Original Pirate - the serious, intense, bullshit - spread out over all the tracks. With more crap production. Dull.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 25 March 2004 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

This stands to be one of the most divisive, polarizing albums on ILM since Room on Fire

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

uhhh what's the "news"?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah sorry folx i didnt mean to imply our precious crime ring was being raided

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck i might have to start breaking the law too.

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

You people are saddening me. (Mostly just for me being reminded about it all.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't heard the album yet, but "Fit" is rrrrrrrrrrrrrrubbish.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 25 March 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not nuts about it myself

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

god this one really is turning out to be contentious isnt it

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i honestly could be happy(ier?) for the rest of my life never hearing this album, but curiosity will likely get the better of me.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 25 March 2004 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I lived through "the britpop years". I read a lot of bad magazine articles. I drank a lot of cider. I chased unsuitable women. I do not need more music like this.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 25 March 2004 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

it's kind of grating.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

it's all "blah blah blah BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH"

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 25 March 2004 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

yes yes that's grating

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 25 March 2004 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm being cynical. It feels good.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 25 March 2004 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I can rap better than this, and I'm not being arrogant or silly. I'm amazed this was released.

ANDREW!, Thursday, 25 March 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

saw the video for this: the backing to the chorus is a big negative, and overall its a bit too 'britpop' for me with that guitar break (which means a lot of ppl here could like it) but this is nowhere near as good as the first four to five tracks on OPM (the beat do sound more awkward), and I guess we're all expecting something at least as good as those.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 25 March 2004 08:32 (twenty-two years ago)

its not obviously likeable but there's enough there to make me listen again. fit is part of a kind of story arc that connects all the songs.
strangely on some songs his "rapping" sounds really natural while on others it's forced, like he's reading lyrics he's never seen before.

the first track is torture, as is the one about betting on the football.

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 25 March 2004 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i heard this song for the first time this morning. not all of it...so if it improves dramatically at the end, then maybe i've missed the important bit but, to my ears, its truly horrible. music to be played by red escorts with booming speakers and furry dice.

i have never really loved them, but there's some insight into life in the likes of 'weak become heroes' and 'let's push things forward' was likeable, if a little over-rated. this song, though? is there anything to enjoy about it?

hobart paving (hobart paving), Thursday, 25 March 2004 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"like he's reading lyrics he's never seen before." mullygrubber OTM.

There's no sense of rhythm or flow to this at all. Even worse than OPM, which I despised - although that might have had more to do with playing too much Sunday morning football and hearing it through boy-racer car stereos every fucking week accompanied by Bristolians pretending to be Mike Skinner.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Sunday, 28 March 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

but my god don't you know it

I'm sure the version I've been hearing says "gosh", not "god" in that bit - right up there with Graham Coxon's "flippin'" on whatever song it was back in the day.

Now if only we could get Eminem to say "skill" we'd be sorted.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 28 March 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I typed these lyrics out as i listened, so feel free to make any corrections -

See I reckon you're about an 8 or a 9,
Maybe even 9 and a half in four beers time.
That blue top shop top you've got on IS nice,
Bit too much fake tan though - but yeah you score high.

But theres just one little thing that really really,
Really really annoying me about you you see,
Yeah yeah like i said you are really fit
But my gosh don't you just know it

I'm not trying to pull you
Even though i would like to
I think you are really fit
You're fit But my gosh dont you know it

So when i looked at you standing there with your hoard,
I was waiting in the que looking at the board
Wondering whether to have a Burger or chips
Or what the shrapnel in my back pocket could afford
When i noticed out the corner of my eye
looking toward my direction
Your eyes locked onto my course
I couldnt concentrate on what i wanted to order,
which cost me my place in the queue i waited for YEAH

I'm not trying to pull you
Even though i would like to
I think you are really fit
You're fit But my gosh dont you know it

Whoa! Leave it out
Are you smoking something?
Leave it Out
Mike just leave it just leave it
We cannot have that behaviour in this establishment
S'not worth it mike, just leave it
Dont Touch Me, S'not Worth It
Dont Touch Me, D, Look Im Alright Dont Touch me

For a while there i was thinkin - yeah but what if?
Picturin' myself pullin with bare white hot wit
Snarin you as you were standing there opposite
Whether or not you knew it i swear you didnt tick
And when that bloke in the white behind us lot queuing
Was clockin onto you too yeah i had to admit
that yeah yeah you are fit,
and yeah i do want it,
but i stop sharkin' for a minute to get chips and drinks

I'm not trying to pull you
Even though i would like to
I think you are really fit
You're fit But my gosh dont you know it

Oy, just as you started to make your big advance
with the milkshake and that little doughnut in hand
i was like nah, even though you look grand
but you look sharp there smilin hard suggesting and
gleaming away with your hearty hearty lookin tan
but i admit the next bit was spanner to my plan
you walked towards my path but just brushed right past
and into the arms of that white shirted man

I'm not trying to pull you
Even though i would like to
I think you are really fit
You're fit But my gosh dont you know it

Oh what do i give .. i've got a girlfirend anyway
(whoa, we've all had a drink mate)
We're all a bit drunk, yeah we've had a few fair play
I got this stella i bombed from that last cafe
This nights not even begun, yes yes oh yay

I did fancy you a bit though yeah i must say
I would rather i hadnt mugged myself on display
But this is just another case of female stopping play
on otherwise a total result of a holiday

I'm not trying to pull you
Even though i would like to
I think you are really fit
You're fit But my gosh dont you know it

From today's CMU mailout:

SKINNER ON THE STREETS CONCEPT
Speaking to Xfm, Mikee Streets has said new album 'A Grand Don't Come For Free' is something of a concept album in that it tells a continuous story starting with him losing £1,000 and falling for a girl called Simone, and ending with some philosophical reflection on his lifestyle and friends. But the concept bit was an accident.

Mr Skinner: "I kinda think that happened while I was recording it. I've always wanted each song to say something specific but I also like it when songs refer to other tracks. Tracks talking to each other y'know? Then it ended up as this bloody concept album. I hate the word 'concept' though. Makes me think of Spinal Tap."

On the subject matter of the album he continued: "Contrary to what the tabloids said last week, my songs have no relevance to my real life. If I was to have a really big argument with my girlfriend, I wouldn't be so stupid to put it in a song would I?"

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

is it soulseek-able yet?
literally can't physically wait 2 hear this.

literally can't physically wait 2 hear this.

I don't believe you.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

No really - he can't. It's the new Streets album or death for piscesboy.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Death seems preferable somehow.

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I LOVE this track...heard it on virgin radio online...can't wait until these folks finally make their way across the sea to canada...You brits wouldn't find it funny but all the slang he uses is frickin hilarious to us canucks... "I'm not trying to pull you" hahaha. I'd buy the cd and giv'er a whirl :)

NaNcY, Tuesday, 30 March 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like this song. It's obviously not beat intensive or anything, but it's really catchy and pretty fun all around.

NaNcY, I hear you on the Canadian stuff, it's quite amusing.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Are the Streets generally enoyed abroad as a novelty 'funny talking' act?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

substitute 'the streets' with 'all british bands' and yes.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

See, I reckon this song's about a 7 (same for the video).

how come we didn't get this many streets googlers last time around?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 4 April 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I have it. Not on S15k tho, as the nice record label lady gave me a water-marked cd. Not that I actually think that they could get away with suing me, I just can't face the hassle that might or might not follow.

Anymways, this is a great album! Much simpler and yet more melodic, it's minimalistic and grimey, with less party funk. Very original, actually. You should look forward to this, guys!

Jay Kid (Jay K), Sunday, 4 April 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

This record is a pile of crap, but likeable. I quite enjoy listening to the lyrics when the song comes on the radio. But do they really make much sense? I mean:

I couldnt concentrate on what I wanted to order,
which cost me my place in the queue I waited for YEAH

Do you really lose your place in a queue because you are eyeing up a woman? And did he wait for the queue? Eh? Sorry, can't picture what was going on. And it seems to me that what happens with this girl is a non-event, so why write a song about it?

Even so, it's not bad; but we hear so much of groups spending a year over one record, yet here we get someone who knocked out a few lyrics on the back of a fag packet. A couple of hours more work and Mike could have tidied them up, surely.

Being from the rural South West, I'm not very familiar with city slang, but has "gosh" come back in, then? Nothing would surprise me.

Baravelli. (Jake Proudlock), Sunday, 4 April 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay I am 'from abroad' and the Streets are enjoyed pretty much as what I would've thought English people enjoy them as eg an attempt to render hip hop local for Liverpool or whatever English district they're from, maybe influenced consciously or subconsciously by other attempts at rendering literature/music specifically UKish eg Scottish literary renaissance/Welsh/Gray etc, earlier things such as Kinks interpretation of American music, maybe even hideous things like Blur's art school interpretation of how to interpret things English-ly. Not that I hate Blur, that came out wrong. And I'm not saying 'The Streets' are conscious of all these prior movements, I wouldn't know. At least that's what I HOPED the Streets were on the basis of what I initially heard by them.

But this single is pretty base.

axl, Monday, 5 April 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a quite brave record, sonically, lyrically. it's the same-old same-old.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 5 April 2004 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The close record it's to is "Johnny Reggae Reggae", in my opinion. I don't know who that's by. A Jonathan King outfit?

Baravelli. (Jake Proudlock), Monday, 5 April 2004 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The Piglets - JK outfit yes. I grew up with that record. Its depiction of teenage life seemed impossibly exotic.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 5 April 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

At last Mike Skinner is being put in his proper critical context - alongside Jonathan King.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 5 April 2004 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Agree, that was unfair, "Everyone's Gone to the Moon" is actually quite good.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 5 April 2004 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to see the Streets live in a showcase at the Triptyque here in Paris tonight. What should I expect ?

Baravelli. (Jake Proudlock), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

right here is a totally unenlightened music criticism. I have heard the new streets record in ‘we’regoingtopissthedownloadersoff’ loop form and I shall now present a mini nobrainer of a review of sorts of said record, despite loops and everything:

chris moyles clearly a big influence. It is terrible. Or a work of inspired genius. I just really don’t want the loops to wind up better that the actual release. John Darnielle has said it is better than it has any right to be. I’m not totally sure what this means. But based on the loops this is not the case.

myke boomnoise, Thursday, 8 April 2004 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It has to be said that you can go further into a streets loop before realising it's just 10 seconds looped than anyone else I can think of.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 8 April 2004 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

soulseek? any sign yet?

is this the first album to genuinely fall foul of bpi/record company crackdowns, and that'll have to actually u know *come out* before we hear it?!! it's like waking up back in the year 2000.

was this 'watermarked cds' thing not b-llocks then?

piscesboy, Thursday, 8 April 2004 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

there's quite a bit on soulseek, all of it (AFAIK) looped.

<Monsieur Baravelli...

Who waits for a position in a queue? (I mean, we're talking about a takeaway shop here.) To queue is only a linear form of waiting.

Baravelli. (Jake Proudlock), Friday, 9 April 2004 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a nice record, i'll have to wait and see if it becomes much more than that. the rapping has suffered though. staccato rhymes leaving big ugly gaps, like missing teeth. lines ending awkwardly and abruptly. and this isn't quite the old technical rap proficiency argument - remember how *right* it on the first record when mike stretched "let's/push/things/forward" over the whole bar? maybe it'll come to me with time, but i don't hear any of that intuition here. (actually maybe mikey liked that particular trick a little *too* much considering how here it seems to be the rule rather than the exception). the production highlight is prob "get out of my house" (or is that just my 'proper garridge bass' nostalgia kicking in?).

m., Friday, 9 April 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

weeks later and this album is still awesome esp. the track about popping too many pills while waiting to meet somebody in a club

however as Crimson T has now notified us that discussing music is a blind alley and we're supposed to just experience, maaaaan, I guess this place'll be a ghost town shortly

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I AM REALLY ENJOYING THIS

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

somewhat to my surprise.

I was driving to buy groceries yesterday with Mrs Nordic and giving it a first listen, trying desperately to swallow the lump in my throat...why is it so affecting?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

to mr. nordic et al. does anyone but me acknowledge the fact that chris moyles seems to be a big influence on this record. in that they sound the same! if moyles but out a record called: 'me and the lads' it would sound very much like this. i like 'a grand...' don't get me wrong.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

And yes, Blinded By the Lights is the standout.

...I mean, we've all been there, right?

Mr Boomnoise- you are a gent on slsk, but must you draw these evil parallels? ;)

The difference is (genuine) irony, I think.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I find it hard to imagine Chris Moyles necking bad Es and losing his mum's money.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I love this at the end of Get Out Of My House:

that thing about Femme Fatale..she's fit and she's fitter than you...I'm never gonna meet her anyway

haha!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

And here I was expecting Skinner's "post-grime" misstep!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

ummmm...has anyone heard the new Streets record? What is your opinion of it?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Moyles influences nothing other than the career of Peter Andre

'A Grand Don't Come For Free' is great for the whole story arc and numerous lyrics both subtle and obtuse, poignant and humourous. i'm a bit disappointed by the minimal production approach in a lot of places, tho it works well in others ('Blinded By The Light' esp.), it's flatter than 'OPM' when it should really be fatter - perhaps Skinner felt a heavier sound would intrude on the story aspect too much, shame.

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

We will allow him his concept album as long as he promises not to make a habit of it.

Yes, this record is missing a "Has It Come To This", but it still far far better than it had a right to be. I kind of wonder how much i will be listening to it in two month's time.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

post-tastic from nordic! the femme fatale gag was indeed fantastic. I try to be a gent. i withdraw the moyles comparison. it was mainly to see who it would wind up. i do laugh harder at moyles than mr skinner though. i like the record but my current issue is trying to get over it as anything other than a novelty / concept record. can it be placed in a (post/current) ukg context at all, if the streets ever really could? i need a new streets record and soon I think.

this probably warrants a new thread but my fragile ego can't take the abuse so… femme fatale hot or not, s/d. c/d?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

jOHn D i'm curious about why it's better than it has any right to be. the rights of records to be good...? mere hyperbole or does it relate to some kind of points system?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

This album is amazing. Album of the 21st century so far.

TOP TEN FAVORITE "A GRAND DON'T COME FOR FREE" LYRICS:

1. "At last my turn comes. Press the fifties quid button: 'Insufficient funds'." ("It Was Supposed to Be So Easy")
2. "I looked at my watch and realized right then that for three hours we been in conversation. Before she put her phone down, she switched to silent and we carried on chatting for more than that again." ("Could Well Be In")
3. "I need to rethink the technique of my betting shit. Maybe tchange the parameters a little bit. Instead of betting on to win the football, I bet to lose cricket." ("Not Addicted")
4. "I hate coming to the entrance just to get bars on my phone." ("Blinded By the Lights")
5. "'Cause basically I love her, and I love being here still. And I love sitting on the sofa with my girl, for real. I don't wanna knock my mates, but there it's the same old drill. Roaching a spliff, watching the TV's my will." ("Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way")
6. "You know I need that medicatiomn for my epilepsy now. Or I run the risk of having a fit, you know I can't go without." ("Get Out of My House")
7. "I'm gone, I'll get out of your house. Then I'll never be back again. But I'll still be seething when you text me to make up and be friends. So there you go alright? Don't try and gimme that shit, awright? 'Cause, I mean you're not exactly, fuckin', you know... wha? You know what I mean... It don't matter any more, I mean... It's hard enough to remember my opinions without remembering my reasons for them... You're confusing me now... I'm not gonna give you an example, I can't remember an example. You do it all the time, you know, that thing that you do, I... I can't remember when you last did it, can I? I'm gone anyway. I'm never gonna darken your towels again, I'll tell you that. And that thing about femme fatale, yeah. And she's fit. And she's fitter than you anyway. I like her, you know what I mean? I'm never gonna meet her. J-Jealous... I-I like her, you know... You can turn that off." ("Get Out of My House")
8. "Yeah, I've got crap reception in my house. I have to stand in a certain spot in my kitchen or it cuts out." ("Such a Twat")
9. "I'm not gonna fuckin' just fuckin' leave it all now. 'Cause you said it'd be forever and that was your vow. And you're gonna let our thing simply crash and fall down? You're well out of order now, this is well out of town." ("Dry Your Eyes")
10. "The TV man comes back later, knocks on mine to say he's found something in the back of the TV. I'm looking at me absolutely speechless, can't quite believe he's trying to pull this fucking stunt on me. I knew it was a simple case of power supply gone on the back, but he's trying to tap me up for more money." ("Empty Cans")

Oh sure, they may not sound all that cool on paper, but when you actually hear the music, they're fucking great!!

And oh yeah! The ending's really cool!! (spoiler!!) He gets his money back in the second ending because he's become a better person: he realizes that people do "give a crap about Mike", whereas in the first ending he fails miserably and gets in a row with Scott, even though he's just trying to fix the TV. Is that right? Or did Scott just steal the money and decide to give the money back to Mike because he felt sorry for him? I think I'm reading too much into this.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 15 April 2004 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

(MORE SPOILERS DONT READ I HATE THAT I'M EVEN DOING THIS)
in the first ending he tells scott to "fuck right off chap", then gets in a row with the tv repairman. in the second ending, he decides to let scott come over and fix the tv and things turn out better. (scott didn't steal nuffink).

m., Thursday, 15 April 2004 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

This album is amazing. Album of the 21st century so far.

I have to confess not buying many artist albums, besides mixes, in the last 2 years or so. But this really is the most affecting album I've heard since Discovery or some of the 2002 classics.

Contrary to what Steve says I think the production is far better than on OPM, it's smoother and smarter, and more varied. The piano driven tracks and the sentimental tracks seem to work fantastically well.

Basically Skinner seems to have mastered a sort of show don't tell style, so much of the album just highlights the glory of half-thought, and rubbishes the idea of distilling experiences and emotions into lyrics which fit a beat or which rhyme or can be used in a chorus.

There are parts of the album where he reaches a total vernacular beauty, at the most emotional part, the climax perhaps, "Empty Cans", he says something like "My jeans felt too tight".

This theme seems to go through the whole album, on "Could Well Be In" the chorus is "I saw this thing on ITV the other week, that says, if she plays with her hair I could well be in"!!!

It's a sort of slow burner this, but god it's worth it.

"Empty Cans" is the most unpretentious yet effective assessment of life I've heard in any record, for a long time.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 15 April 2004 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yes. fifth listen. now i'm there.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Thursday, 15 April 2004 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

re production, it's not a case of 'better or worse' so much, you would expect it to be tighter and more disciplined and surely it is, i am just lamenting what sounds like a lack of hooks as bold as the ones on OPM. i'm thinking of 'Same Old Thing' a lot and how it's drama isn't quite matched on this LP sonically.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i do love the orchestral roll at the end of the first track tho, and the way Skinner is almost inaubible, babbling to himself details that we should really be hearing too - requiring that little bit more listening effort...or maybe my CD copy was not EQ'd properly!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

the way they say 'what a relief' in the chorus on 'Not Addicted' seems awfully clumsy tho. it irks.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"I saw this thing on ITV the other week, that says, if she plays with her hair I could well be in"

it's 'she's probably keen' each time though isn't it? good points well made tho

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose I miss that it doesn't have a Turn The Page. But then it couldn't really. You can't meet someone for the first time twice. Which isn't always true in music, but since The Streets = Mike Skinner so much, I can accept it here.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I find it really hard to believe that he lives with his mother, though. Especially since all that fuss was made in his press about moving from Birmingham to Bounds Green. And when he says 'tell mum I couldn't make tea', does he mean 'attend dinner' or 'cook dinner'? If he's not living at home, the 'turn up for dinner' meaning makes sense. If not, then it's the other one. I'm just trying to iron these things out, you understand.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 17 April 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a fucking marvellous record. And this morning I found out who Skinner's manager is and remembered that he owes me £50 from about four years ago.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

OK having listened to this thing once... hmm, mixed feelings. Most of it is really, really good - "Blinded By The Lights", my god. And I love "Dry Your Eyes" and "Not Addicted". I wasn't paying particular attention to the storyline but I like the idea and what I did catch works very well. The girl on "Get Out Of My House" is awesome.

I don't like Skinner's new trick of rapping like a spastic kid reading an autocue - I'm sure he was never this irritatingly stilted on OPM, certainly not as bad as "Fit But You Know It" and, er, whatever the first song is called. And it's really annoyingly deliberate - like, there's no point to it at all, but he's gone out of his way to make the songs sound retarded.

Also, "Empty Cans" is just... I dunno, I like it sonically and I like the idea of two endings, but in practise it's just horribly trite and heavy-handed.

I reckon it's about a 7 or an 8, maybe even an 8 1/2 in four beers' time.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 17 April 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I kind of agree with you about the deliberately crap and stilted thing, Alex, but I remember how awkward the debut sounded for the first few listens, and how amazing after lots and lots of listens.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, I liked OPM straight off... I agree it was awkward, but that's more because he wasn't so much rapping as talking, and the rhymes just seemed like totally natural parts of the... monologues (and of course all of this tied in with the vernacular, real life etc elements). Here, it's comes off like a particularly annoying affectation, like "ooh I'm such a LAD, me, I don't speak properly and I mangle my vowels". Maybe he wants to be a Radio 1 DJ.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Possible. Have you seen his website? http://www.the-streets.co.uk He writes like he talks, assuming it is him who updates it.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"blinded" is nice, but i can't help feeling it suffers from the inevitable "weak become heroes" comparison.

m. (mitchlnw), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

oh nothing here is even half as affecting as "Weak Become Heroes".

"Fit But You Know It" sounds like "Parklife". Not quite that bad, but still... that's not a song I wanted to be reminded of ever again.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

You got it! I was totally struck by the Blur thing this afternoon too. I think "Dry Your Eyes" might be as affecting as "Weak Become Heroes", in a different way.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Blinded By The Light is the "Xpander" to Weak Become Heroes "Someday".

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Over my head, Ronan.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

But then again I am old.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Almost 25!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

That's old enough for those two songs.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm too rural then.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

That was basically my way of saying Weak Become Heroes is euphoric and happy, and Blinded By The Light has that bleak mystique of prog or trance, Blinded By The Light is not exactly happy.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm finding 'Could Well Be In' a real fucking tearjerker - God knows what will happen to me when my downloading gets to 'Empty Cans'.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"Weak Become Heroes" is the complete opposite of euphoric! The piano chords are really wistful.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Skinner the UK garage (or whatthefuckever) Jimmy Stewart? Cos this is a musical version of It's A Wonderful Life with existentialist undertones and spliff butts, yeah?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah nostalgic maybe but not wistful, in my opinion. No more nostalgic than 99 percent of that sort of house record either, or the sort of house record Weak Become Heroes is parodying (minus big kicks).

Weak Become Heroes is like an advertisement for clubbing, a general catch all which works amazingly well because it does pretty much catch all, there is a tinge of sadness at the end and it's sort of bitter sweet but the high points are pretty high.

Blinded By The Light on the other hand is a specific.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i find "weak become heroes" quite sad and nostalgic actually, all warble and memory-fuzz. but yeah, "blinded" is affectingly weary - and when it gets to the climax, it's less blissout than collapse.

(multiple xpost)

m. (mitchlnw), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Bittersweet! That's the word which I was looking for. Yeah, WBH is a (very effective) summation of the clubbing experience but even the highs are viewed through the prism of distance - like when he says "we all smile, we all sing", you both know that's true and also know that at that moment he is doing neither.

If this is the UK garage/whatthefuckever It's A Wonderful Life this may go some way to explaining my mixed feelings about it.

(xpost M otm)

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Weak Become Heroes was damaged seriously for me by shit DJs rinsing the Ashley Beedle mix dry. I liked that mix first but after a while it became extremely annoying in the context of an actual DJ set, a dance track just riding on Skinner's vocal that stood out a mile.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

This really is an extraordinary fucking record.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

looking at it from that angle, i suppose my WBH experience is somewhat coloured by the impossibility of me ever actually hearing the track (in remixed form or otherwise) at a club.

(xpost)

m. (mitchlnw), Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The one time I heard WBH in a club (unremixed) it was really odd, like hearing Unfinished Sympathy in a club. You can't dance to them, you can only sway vaguely and sniff a bit.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

My clubbing days were sparse anyway, and well over by the time I heard WBH. I've never taken E (or even Speed) but it doens't really matter. We all know that feeling anyway.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

X-post; Aye.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 17 April 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

is n. weeping yet?

m. (mitchlnw), Saturday, 17 April 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope so.

this is very good, N.. and if you're weeping...

yeah, I'm in love already. excited too. and drunk innit.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I was streaming with 'Dry Your Eyes' earlier. It was unexpectedly apposite.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 18 April 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope he releases the Chris Martin version as a B-Side. You know damn well he only took it off the record 'cause he didn't want to get any flak from all the Coldplay haters. Tossers.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 18 April 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's an album to listen to on headphones. I don't often listen to albums on headphones.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 18 April 2004 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

It's definitely NOT the kind of record that would sound good in a club. A lot of Streets fans on other message boards are hugely disappointed at the lack of "bangers" on this one, but screw 'em. To me, it's all about the lyrics.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 18 April 2004 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

'I hate having to go to the door to get bars on my phone.'

'It's hard enough to remember my opinions nevermind the reasons for them.'

The stuff about Femme Fatale.

This album's great; seems maybe a touch one-tone though.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Chris Martin on 'Dry Your Eyes'? (Is it on the internet anywhere?) That springy guitar sounds like the first blush of 'Yellow', I thought. (It also sounds like Sparklehorse, ha.)

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

He was meant to be on it but he isn't no more none. I find the end of "Empty Cans" more affecting.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 April 2004 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I've not really been affected by any of it yet; well, it's made me smile and laugh but no tears. It's probably just too early in the day.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 18 April 2004 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

First time I heard "Dry Your Eyes" I cried.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 18 April 2004 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

And I'm a fucking hard bastard.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 18 April 2004 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

can we make this a crying competition. I cried to almost every song on the Dizzee Rascal album, in fact I haven't stopped since 1997

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 April 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I cried at your birth, Ronan. Hard and long and true and refreshing like drops of dew on a virgin's arse.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 18 April 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i was gonna say what cozen did bout 'yellow'.

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy Shiat! Mr. Snrub, I love you. THANKS.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone know of a link to the whole album lyrics?

I'm particularly looking for empty cans, dry your eyes and could wlel be in lyrics. Love those songs :-)

Crackdown2001, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Finally, I got to listen to this last night. The whole narrative\concept of the album is the most dislikable aspect, I just rather an album of certain moments rather than telling a story but I've got all the mp3's mixed up so when I get the chance to rearrange them it might be a different story. "Blinded by the light" gave me a few chuckles (esp. when he's coming up, gasping and going "freearh". No-one details and E experience quite like Skinner). "Dry your Eyes" is unashamedly emo and all the better for it. Surely the next single? The "I'll roach a spliff, watching the T.V." song is great too. Not as immediate as OPM but maybe that's 'cos it was such a surprise at the time.

Michael B, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The single features a remix by the Futureheads (Wire-esque indierock band, if I'm not mistaken) and a version featuring Kano, Donae'o, Tinchy Stryder & Lady Sovereign!

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

all about the MC remix!

chantelle fiddy, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"I saw this thing on ITV the other day / It said if she plays with her hair she's probably keen" is still the bittersweet thing going through my head all the time.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry - 'other week'. Anyway, I think that should be a single.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

this is tremendous and seriously distracting me from work. get out of my house! i wonder how it's appeal will last

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm proper delighted.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, he only watches it now cause his mum wouldn't let him when he was a kid.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

look who is on the front cover of the NME this week:

http://microsites.nme.com/thisweek/
Is that Mike Skinner the new Ian Dury for the 21st Century?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

watch out for the video thats been done featuring sov, kano and co...meant to be very big

chantelle fiddy, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Snrub you are the king of kings. Woohoo!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I can't stop listening to this,

best bit is when the piano starts in on 'empty cans' and the refrain 'the beginning of bad things to come' despite being part of an ending which is essentially happy (finding the money, the hopeful tone of the rolling piano etc.)

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Listened to it two or three times: I like the samples and some of the beats, but Skinner can't rap and the rhymes are generally stupid. "It was supposed to be easy" may be one of the worst hip-hop songs ever.

subgenius (subgenius), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT THE BORING HATRED HAD STOPPED.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

By the way, what is all the hype about the Streets, I don't understand them at all, perhaps 30 threads in the next 3 months are needed. This certainly led to some magnificent discussion of Dizzee Rascal.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

thanx to charlieno4 there - i should be there if this works out.

I am all primed for Streets - The Opera, which is what this blimmin CD is, ok?

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

This really is an extraordinary fucking record.

Nick the OTMest of the OTM. N also w/r/t "Could Well Be In."

adam (adam), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"It was supposed to be easy" may be one of the worst hip-hop songs ever.

Isn't that a bit like dissing, I dunno, "Common People" as being "one of the worst death metal songs ever"?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Um.. call me a philistine, but I can't see what's so affecting about "Empty Cans".. "Dry Your Eyes" is rather gorgeous though.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

u r a filystein

empty cans is grebt

Jaunty Alan (Alan), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Good point, CharlieNo4. I was just about to correct myself -- he's making a weak stab at rapping, but I don't think it's hip-hop. Maybe it would be less irritating if he was flailing around in another genre.

subgenius (subgenius), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure the only difference would be that different people would be annoyed by it.

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I must clarify that I've not had sex to it. Yet.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

He sounds more like he's "toasting" than rapping.

I am all primed for Streets - The Opera, which is what this blimmin CD is, ok?

Yep! And all the better for it. It's like Tommy. Or The Wall.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Or It's A Wonderful Life.

i just realized crying over a girl and a record in a chinese restaurant is rather too streets-esque for my comfort, actually

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

You twee fuckers.

'Could well be in' puts me in mind of Bruce Hornsby and his Range.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Saturday, 24 April 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i would probably cry at bruce hornsby too, at this point.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 April 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

(oh and evidently I have to buy this album - a lot of OPM tracks grew on me over time and this album sounds way more interesting overall)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 April 2004 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it trounces all over opm even after only two or three listens, and i'd still rate opm as one of the five or six best lp's of the 00s.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think individual moments sustain as well once taken on their own as those from OPM did/do simply because they NEED to fit together here.

That's so badly phrased.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 April 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

well yeah, there aren't any singles, really. i can't imagine anything surviving the remix treatment.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i just never would have guessed that when i first heard "has it come to this?" on a 2-step comp three years ago that this chump would have made me cry in 2004

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 24 April 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

ehehehehehehe... The video for "Fit..." looks very expensive. It's like "Girls & Boys" on beta blockers. I'm going to be very interested to see how people react to this outside of ILM / music crits.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 April 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Skinner looks a lot older in the video too, he really looked like a lost kid on the OPM sleeve.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 April 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

OPM did a million copies worldwide according to the press release. He can't really do another album about losing a grand after this one.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 April 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

haha yeah i guess it's much to his credit that i buy this schtick still after seeing him in a million glossy magazines.

mullygrubber (gaz), Sunday, 25 April 2004 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

It took me a while to get the nip in the tail of the chorus of 'Not Addicted'.

I like this album the more (and more) I listen to it.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 25 April 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i have not set foot in an interne cafe once since being in nyc and do not intend to

i'm sort of envious i couldn't share the tears with you all, damn this heart of steel. maybe it is better than OPM after all. but can anyone see it working as well live? not so sure

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 25 April 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't like OPM live too much; perhaps that was just the fault of buzz-harshing flatmates and the spillover of disappointment from More Fire Crew supporting.

I still think 'Has it Come To This?' is the best, most affecting (whatever) thing he's written. It's so bound up with a particular time and memory for me though as to immunise it from criticism.

Apparently, according to the Observer Music Monthly, the story had initially centred around Mike buying a £1,050 scooter (that's why he goes to the cash machine in the first song, for the extra £50) but he removed that verse from the song cause 'it was making it lag.' He has a sore throat on the first song too, apparently.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 25 April 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm unclear as to whether the money (in a shoebox, or is that just figuratively speaking - unless it's in coins you wouldn't need a shoebox??) has been down the back of the TV all along or whether it just slipped down there after Scott loosened the screws to repair it.

I don't understand the 'I was worried it might be a final bill I needed, so we took the back off' reasoning either - surely Scott was about take the back off anyway? Or was that a different part of the TV's workings?

I can't believe I am spending my Sunday afternoon rewinding and looping a song to make sense of the logistics of a TV repair manoeuvre.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 25 April 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe to get to the thing they saw stuck in there they needed to remove a bit of the tv they weren't going to. and maybe the money was in cheque form. though, yes, that doesn't explain the shoebox really.

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 25 April 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, the money's almost certainly not a cheque, not the way he refers to it, in "all its glory".

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 25 April 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

clearly we need to see a picture of this television. i'm picturing something gigantic and antiquated, something you could hollow out and stage puppet shows inside of.

Goddamn the spoilers.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 25 April 2004 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Skinner has flat screens all round his home, he can't watch normal televisions because "they flash" and excite his epilepsy.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 25 April 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

So it'll be a swanky new telly. I didn't think those flat screen tellys had 'backs', per sé; or am I thinking of plasma screens?

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 25 April 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was a kid our family TV had massive slats in the back that a bundle of, say, 20 £50 notes could easily have slipped down. That was the sort of telly I was imagining is in Skinner's place.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Sunday, 25 April 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i. 'Tiredness is actually what sets me off... Tiredness and TVs. That's why my house is all flat-screens - because they're a different technology and they don't flash.'

ii. 'I see the character on the album as being me with my opinions and reacting the way I would react, just in a fictional situation.'

Dunno.

Sorry.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 25 April 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone with track 8 -- email it to me, and I will FedEx you a hug. I'm dyin' over here.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 25 April 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Each time I listen to 'Blinded By the Lights' I see some imaginary video with one of those irritating club-walkthroughs, with that long shutter-speed look for the background and a chest-mounted camera gawping up at Skinner.

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 25 April 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

haha otm!!

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 25 April 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was a kid we had a meter-operated tv. You would put 50p in the back of it, and that would give you 12 hours of telly-watching. Once a month, the tv rental company man would come round to empty the box, and though there wasn't quite a grand in there, it was certainly more money than I had ever seen before, and would regularly supply my £2 pocket money in the early 80s.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Sunday, 25 April 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think he really lost £1,000 people.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 25 April 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 25 April 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

commas die?

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 25 April 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Does everyone else's copy of 'Dry Your Eyes' skip at about 1:40?

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 25 April 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

mine doesn't, but i didnt get it from the snub link. one of the songs does have a skip, but i can't remember which one.

m. (mitchlnw), Sunday, 25 April 2004 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, forgive the poetic license, the way the money could be in an envelope, a cheque, cash or whatever, analyzing the finer points of skinner's urban opera detracts from it's beauty. it is fiction after all. Plus you’d be surprised about how much space is behind your telly! Just watch ITV for lifestyle tips.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Sunday, 25 April 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm being very patient in waiting to hear the album but this thread is really starting to make me unhappy.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 26 April 2004 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

motherfucking track 8

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 26 April 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

He does sound like he has a sore throat on the first track, yeah. I was thinking, 'woah, he must have been caning it pretty hard these last couple of years.' He sounds like himself for the rest of the album, though.

Magnificent record.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Monday, 26 April 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim, I think mr snrub's link to the mp3s still works.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 26 April 2004 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread has officially bummed me out (plus the spoilers, which I caught while waiting for the page to download). I only wanted to say that my new favourite part in 'Fit...' is the "Leave it aaahhhhttt" bridge.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 26 April 2004 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Why's it bummed you out?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 26 April 2004 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I think we annoyed him with all the talk about the mechanics of losing £1000 down the back of a telly.

You know it wasn't serious, right?

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 26 April 2004 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was a kid our family TV had massive slats in the back that a bundle of, say, 20 £50 notes could easily have slipped down. That was the sort of telly I was imagining is in Skinner's place.

But in the first song he says the money is in a shoebox...

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 26 April 2004 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I'm bummed out by the prospect of not hearing this for months. The idea of giving a shit about The Streets is new to me and I want to encourage my interest quick as poss.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 26 April 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i was serious. it's important!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 26 April 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Like stevem, I'm sort of confused and envious of all the tears. I find "Blinded By The Lights" and to a lesser extent "Dry Your Eyes" very affecting, but for the most part the emotional stuff... eh, I just have no time for straight men and their problems, it's all a bit trite.

I'm not even sure how universal it is - the terminology, the situations, the body language stuff all remind me of people I know and I recognise them completely, but that != universal. OPM works so much better on that level.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 26 April 2004 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

confused by and envious of

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 26 April 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

As for the mechanics of losing that grand...

Explain this.

Barima (Barima), Monday, 26 April 2004 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I'm bummed out by the prospect of not hearing this for months

But Barima, there's a link to mp3s of the whole thing upthread!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 26 April 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

otm tico.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 26 April 2004 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

me too. i was joking. although it is a metaphor, but that's a given and not really worth discussing. anyone heard 'soaked by the ale' yet?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Monday, 26 April 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I will give anyone who emails track 8 ("such a twat") to me five dollars/pounds/yen/drachmas/&c (no jive.) This foolishness has gone on long enough. Help a brother out, ILM!

From The Sun:

It will be a hit and you know it

http://images.thesun.co.uk/picture/0,,2004190509,00.jpg

"At long last, a pure British lagerswilling anthem to be proud of.

THE STREETS single Fit But You Know It hits the shelves today and it will be a travesty if it doesn't make it to No1.

It is the best thing I've heard in ages and is going to take some beating as the track of the year."

This is enough to stop me buying the single, almost. And, anyway, it doesn't have a hope in hell of beating Busted to the top spot.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god

retort pouch (retort pouch), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The Streets – aka MIKE SKINNER – penned the song after a trip abroad where he saw loads of girls who were fit but knew it.

Yeah, thanks for that penetrating analysis.

Actually, that graphic is fucking hilarious. I think I've found a new email sig.

retort pouch (retort pouch), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like Herman Munster wearing a flea collar, innit?

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Listening to this for the first time last night, and when there was that 'tape edit' sound I thought that this was like a concept album like 'zen arcade' (recurring dreams) is a concept album. I was nearly sleeping.

Not even close to tears, I'm a pussy.

I enjoyed it and the current single is ok as an album track (kept thinking I would hate it but was fine with it as soon as it came on).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I got bits of it off Bearshare (I find that Soulseek crashes constantly and horribly, so am reluctant to use it) but it was just loops. Anyone know any way around this? I'll try and use Slsk if I have to, it means that I just can't go anywhere near my pc 'til it's finished.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Bizarre; I have to keep using my PC when I'm downloading - if I leave it, it crashes.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

At long last, a pure British lagerswilling anthem to be proud of.

This - coupled with the fact that it sounds like fucking "Parklife" - was what made me ambivalent about "Fit But You Know It" at first. It is a 'pure British lagerswilling anthem' with all the connotations that implies, but it's also quite charming.

The tits in the video are not charming though. ugh.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I think people are looking at this record through tear-goggles. It's not all that.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

DON'T DENIGRATE MY GOGGLES.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

you just wanted to say 'tear-goggles'!

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I think people are having a very strong, instant reaction to it because it makes you cry first time out or not at all; there's a sense, for me, of diminishing returns from the album as a whole, but some of the tracks are standing out now. It all hinges on how the album exists away from the narrative, because, let's face it, after you've been through the story three times it's not all that - it's a useful and intriguing device at best.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck that "will it stand the test of time" nonsense.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but you can't claim an album is the best of the year (or millenium!) when it only has a really strong impact the first time yo8u listen to it.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes you can, you twat.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

haha!

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

is it time for the FT streets special yet?

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm almost done my article!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, you mean about the new one

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe I'm being ganged up on by members of Sinsiter. RJG'll be gutted he missed this.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

That graphic is sure to become the new ...something.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait a minute. Maybe I'm wrong about this one, but isn't The Sun that one magazine that called the White Stripes "the best thing since Hendrix" or something ridiculously hyperbolic like that back when White Blood Cells came out?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought that was the Today programme.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

just heard the new track on cd1 of the single. it's very much b-side material, but it's about beer and over priced ice cream and it continues the holiday theme.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but you can't claim an album is the best of the year (or millenium!) when it only has a really strong impact the first time yo8u listen to it.

Sure you can. Great pop recoreds are immediaite. You could be listening on the radio to something you've never heard before and just think to yourself, "Holy shit! I've GOT to get this!!" It's not for nothing that Spin Magazine once named "It Takes Two" the greatest single of all time the same year it was released (1988 I think??)

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but the statement "great pop records" are immediate suggests to me individual songs and singles, not a 50-minute concept garage opera.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

And there are bugger all singles on this record. I'm not saying it's not great - I said above "this is a fucking exceptional record" and I stand by that.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

What are these mysterious, rock of ages standards by which you judge whether something is the best record of all time?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't; I don't believe in such a thing, which is why I object to this being described in such terms. The 'album of the year', stuff is what bothers me. It's fucking April. The record's not even out yet. You might be bored of it inside two months. ILM did this last year with Basement Jaxx and it's silly, deigning a record classic before anyone's even fucking heard it. Yes, it's very good, blah blah, yes Ronan's been crying since 1997, yes I think it's ace and when I first heard it I was prepared to give it a 10 or whatever, but just calm down a bit everyone. Give it some time.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

What for? You don't believe in the accolade anyway, so why not lighten up and have fun with it?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree with both of you.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Hang on, you believe in 'album of the year' but you don't believe in 'album of all time'. I see. So you're just making the banal point that we should wait till Dec 31st? Well yeah, if you want.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

scratch what i said - i got it wrong

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not about beer and ice-cream?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it's perfectly valid to speculate on the durability of a record, especially one whose emotional punch is tied to the first-time thrill of watching its storyline unfold.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The story is a bit rubbish and I'd read it on this thread already.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

nick, i'm not saying it's a bad record by any stretch!

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry - 'the story is a bit rubbish' has already become a bit of a cliché.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Emotional punch? eh? It has three good songs. That is it. End of.

___ (___), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, you're right. It's the worst album of the year.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Correct Sir - this is the Stadler and Waldorf thread of ILM.

(but it really isn't worth all this hype - its a pretty good album, hardly life-changing)

___ (___), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

the b-side goes like this: scott moaning about mike getting really pissed (ie the aftershocks etc mentioned in 'such a twat')going in to a shop and stealing a tub of three euro ice cream by shoving down his pants. this song essentially comes in between fbyki and such a twat. it is the 'stupid thing' which he talks about in such a twat leading up to drunken tomfoolery with the/a girl in fbyki who tries it on. for a b-side it's pretty good. great in fact, put in the album context.

my interpretations any way.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

N., is this an extended bid for the title of "Most cantankerous man on ILM"?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

What is Mike saying in the chorus of Such A Twat? "It felt like... we're a fruido?" Eh?

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Is the person in the booklet for "OPM" Mike SKinner? Because it doesn't look like him at all. I was thinking maybe Skinner's doing a "Quadrophenia" type thing with those photos, where there's this kid who stands in for the "I" of the songs. Haha dude the Streets is SOOOOOOO Quadrophenia actually!!!! a bildungsroman of love, social comment, taking sides: this drug vs that drug, !!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

What is Mike saying in the chorus of Such A Twat? "It felt like... we're a fruido?

"It felt like we were through, though"

e b-side goes like this: scott moaning about mike getting really pissed (ie the aftershocks etc mentioned in 'such a twat')going in to a shop and stealing a tub of three euro ice cream by shoving down his pants.

I must hear this!

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

is the single out?

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, think it came out yesterday.

Incidentally, the bit in Such A Twat where it stops and he goes "Ah, fucking phones, man!" makes me laugh every time.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't the "I like her, I'm never gonna meet her" bit in Get Out Of My House very David Brent?

I don't think he'd even have pulled it off without the Office!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I love that bit. I love to say it out loud. I fear this makes me an idiot.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

That was an x-post, but yeah, that bit's great too, Ronan. Didn't think it was very Brentian though.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha! Yeah, that whole section is, now you mention it. I hope I am able to excise that comparison from my mind. I love the way it ends - "you can turn that off and all" . I'm assume this is there because it's the end of side one on the LP, but for me it works brilliantly as a deflating way to segue into the potentially god-I've-heard-this-too-muchness of Fit But You Know It.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds like that ice-cream song really should be on the album - the whole holiday thing feels a bit overcut.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, it's not clear that Fit But You Know It is set on holiday till the "on an otherwise total result of a holiday" line.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah "Fit But You Know It" is so different from the rest of the album that it really works far better in the context.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

If this ice-cream-down-pants song is in the same style, then yeah, maybe.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

snrub was saying that it was going to be on the album or something. we had a conversation trying to work out the finer details of the story but it made my head hurt. i don't think the holiday thing is underplayed though and i think another holiday song on the album would over emphasize his relationship stress more than appropriate.

Report on macum scum the futureheads version of fbyki coming soon.
but i'll say this: think a more skewed kings of leon cover version with both skinner and additional vocals. it is a tad silly. but one for the indie clubs.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

in fact that was my report

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a good report. I think I will avoid that mix.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

wise i think. but the mcs version is spot on. right now. after one spin and forgetting about the album context, i like it better than the original.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes the mc version is good but oh my gosh! it sadly develops the misogynistic overtones of the original and this makes me feel slightly uncomfortable in a j2k sort of way. But there are some nice lines like: ‘you ain’t Beyonce, an’ you ain’t either, come down from cloud nine you really think you’re a diva! And all this revolves around a loop not too dissimilar from the early album leak. ‘Just coz you got double D’s / don’t mean you can trouble me!’ and some new lines from Mike contemplating getting his ears pierced. The Lady Sovereign bit is amazing! She mentions: ‘was wearing baggy jeans and a tight top / cleavage kinda showin’ but still I saw somethin’ in your trousers growin’!’. Download or buy the single (s) now! Sorry if the disclosure of the lyrics here spoils it for some people but seeing as the promo copy of the single was just one track and these b-sides aren’t widely available on the net yet I thought I would divulge. But yes, avoid the Futureheads version unless you like Kings of Leon cum silly 21st century post punk. For me these b-sides are mandatory (esp. ‘soaked by the ale’) and provide a perfect accompaniment to the album.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

soon to be announced: the streets at toronto's kool haus in june. i would imagine that it's part of a larger north american promo tour - unfortunately i don't have u.s. date info yet.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Am listening to it for the first time now -- I didn't think that the "playing with her hair" was supposed to be anything but a funny thing, but it was sort of touching.

I'm not so sure just yet, but do know I can't wait to hear the rest. Hands shaking from excitement, actually.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone upthread is totally otm in re: the context being key for "fit but you know it".

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I teared up at the end!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, just heard the single (well, CD2) and luv it. damn y'all (again!) for the LP spoilers btw

i thought the futureheads version of fbyki was alright, the guitar in the verses sounds like like Gang of Four or Big Flame or something, with the refrain more Sham 69 than Kings of Leon IMHO

myke boomnoise OTM about the MCs version however. I wish The Lady Sovereign had done the whole thing actually, then it could've been a bona fide ANSWER RECORD. Skinner's verse in this version is terrific though

the drum'n'bass mix of 'don't mug yourself' is completely inessential.

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, i too was hoping for a shystie style refix, but alas no.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Bought CD1 - it kept finishing with me realising I'd not really taken in a note of Soaked by the Ale. I don't think I want to many tracks with Scott doing those jarring vocals - it does my head in a bit. which is alright on What Is He Thinking, but I'll glad this is a B-side.

Got the DVD single too. The Fit But You Know It video is a bit of a disappointment - I liked the idea of holiday snaps coming to life, but the way it's done really detracts from the music - I think it's because they've got the photo subjects singing the lines - it's disorienting, until the end section when he's at his estate, where it seems to work a bit better, maybe becuase there are longer takes.

But the cheapo vid for Irony Of It All on the B-side is great, if only for Mike doing his turn as Tim the student. Has this been released before?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sure I've seen it before. possibly on some music channel. not sure about a release though.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

it was on a website linked to from this Board way back when, which is how I saw it

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the MCs version is hearable on the streets website btw

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

They played the vid for "The Irony of it All" over the song when he performed live.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

why on earth did they not release the mc version of fbyki? it's far stronger songer than the album version.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Saturday, 1 May 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Remix video.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 3 May 2004 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

cheers for the link JoB. Does anyone else like this version more than the original?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Monday, 3 May 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

yes!!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

even in spite of the revelation that lady sovereign looks like mel c.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

she does a bit. far prettier though i think. can't wait for her single.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

any idea what it's called?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 3 May 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

'Chi Ching! (Cheque 1, 2)'

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Monday, 3 May 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Any relation to Sunship's "Cheque One Two"?

JoB (JoB), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yup, Ceri Evans of sunship is production.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

is on production, is producing although could very well be production.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Monday, 3 May 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if he's done a grime update or Lady Sovereign is gonna come on all ol'skool. Although just generally I'm glad to see Sunship is still getting work.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 3 May 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

it's being billed as a grime anthem so it appears an update is on the cards. unless, of course, it is entirely different. new sunship single out in june i think.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Monday, 3 May 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

RFI: Kano, Donae'O, Lady Sovereign

(should I start flicking through that disgustingly huge grime thread?)

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 7 May 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Which MCs are which on the remix?

The second one (also does the singing) and Lady Sovereign are grebt.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 7 May 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the order in which they're credited in the "feat." bit of the title = the order in which the MCs appear (save that Skinner pops up half way through)

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

RFI: Kano, Donae'O, Lady Sovereign

Kano is from N.A.S.T.Y. Crew who are probably the biggest in the scene after Roll Deep. Kano is slated as the next big solo thing. His big tune is Boys Love Girls AKA Vice Versa.

Donae'o put out a hugely entertaining 12" on Social Circles last year called Bounce (My Philosophy) which was pretty big on an underground level.

Lady Sovereign is one of the best known female MC's, besides Shystie and Lady Stush. Novelty factor: she's white.

JoB (JoB), Friday, 7 May 2004 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, zeb.

How old is Tinchy Stryder? 12?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

He was sixteen in a magazine interview about half a year ago.

JoB (JoB), Friday, 7 May 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah thanks JoB. Downloaded a few snippets off the Independance Records website, I am now schooled.

Dave M. (rotten03), Saturday, 8 May 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

is this the best press-reviewed album in ILX's lifetime?
i'm thinking it must be. uncut, q, the guardian, the observer; all give it full marks. every review i've seen seems to be trying to outdo the others for hysteria. except the indy. miserable sods.

piscesboy, Saturday, 8 May 2004 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope so.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 8 May 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.stylusmagazine.com/review.php?ID=1972

So it's finally out today. Question is, how will the public react? And why is the album thread still (erroneously) titled after the single?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 10 May 2004 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

When I played it in the office last week everyone else seemed a bit bored, and after a while I put Kanye West on instead.

I think it'll do well though. Everyone loves "Fit But You Know It" and though they might be initially disappointed at the lack of bangers, it's sentimental and (very very) blokey at the same time. Which appeals to a lot of people.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 10 May 2004 09:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Skinner reckons "Dy Your Eyes" will "get played on local radio" and Swygart reckons it'll go Number One. If that happens the album will go megamegamega.

I downloaded L'Histoire de Melody Nelson yesterday.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 10 May 2004 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps the success of Eamon bodes well for 'Dry Your Eyes'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 10 May 2004 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

yes that thought did spring to my mind...

hey nick, what did you think of Our Serge?

Marcello Carlin, Monday, 10 May 2004 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Not had chance ti listen yet, Marcello - I had to 'engage' with Keane instead for Stylus!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 10 May 2004 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice review, Nick.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 10 May 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 10 May 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"Dry Your Eyes" silenced our office today - everyone stopped to listen. After about a minute someone said it was very good and asked who it was.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

so we need a new thread really now the LP's out, yes? one with proper spoiler warnings in the title an' that. i'm off home now to have a first listen. perhaps i'll start thread tomorrow

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 10 May 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
so the new single is out on DVD on the 28th, and something that will surely send excitement thru ilx is the news that the way way superior mc version of fit but you know it has a *video* and it's contained thereon.

piscesboy, Monday, 13 September 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

they showed the video of the remix on CD:UK Hotshots a while back - have been dying to see it again

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 13 September 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The remix video was up on the-streets.co.uk for a while. I knew about it cuz Mike and I are sp3cial fri3nds he sends me emails and everything to tell me about stuff on his site he tried to pass me a beer from the stage once but some dick got between us I LOVE YOU MIKEEEEE

Lukas (lukas), Monday, 13 September 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, but I got (given) a 12" with an MC remix of Get Out of My House. Ha!

JoB (JoB), Monday, 13 September 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
the remix is good, except the only MC who really sounds like they put in some effort is lady sovereign. kano could have outshone everyone but he did that off beat almost-streets like cadence for most of his verse, only MCing properly at the end of his turn. bit of a wasted opportunity really - it could have been really special. not a large patch on the streets feat. roll deep remix from the last album.
