OK, it's almost March - what is your favorite release of 2004 so far?

As noted on a previous thread, mine is easily Devendra Banhart's "Rejoicing in the Hands"

Obviously you don't have to adhere to 'official' release dates - if you've heard it, you can declare it.

Anyone besides Mark P heard the new Streets? Anyone heard the new Morrissey yet?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

As noted on a previous thread, mine is easily Devendra Banhart's "Rejoicing in the Hands"

I think I'd actually agree with this! However I have yet to hear any 2004 album more than once this year, which is when I start realizing what I really like or not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Despite one track that I think is terrible and another that I think doesn't belong on the CD, mine is Marcel Khalife's Caress. I haven't heard much though.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably a tie between Emma Bunton's Free Me and Courtney Love's America's Sweetheart.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

album: The College Dropout - Kanye West
single: Yeah - LCD Soundsystem

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now, it'd probably be Xiu Xiu's Fabulous Muscles.

abegrand, Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Stereolab probably. But I haven't heard much.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

America's Sweetheart

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

America's Sweetheart?!? I heard it a few days ago... and I honestly didn't think music could be this bad, this generic, this grating, this useless.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

savor that ignorance and never turn on US rock radio.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Or 4Music.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I dig a few songs on America's Sweetheart but I'm not thrilled to hear more songs ABOUT being an LA corporate rock cokehead.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

America's Sweetheart a really compelling... psychological document, almost. Almost everything it reveals about Courtney seems to have been revealed unintentionally. I mean, I see how people can say it's a mess, but it's a glorious mess.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

America's Sweetheart IS, of course.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I think... as I said in my review over at Stylus, its four or five good songs, but one great album. As with "Celebrity Skin", Courtney seems to excel nowadays at making albums that need to be listened to in a continual spell, rather than just taking each track on its own.

(However, if she does release "But Julian, I'm A Little Bit Older Than You" as a single, we have a new best single of all time)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

College Dropout thus far. Madvillain will prolly be the big challenger coming up though. I refuse to dl it in advance.

djdee2005, Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"Through The Wire" has a Vanilla Sky reference and Courtney Love thanks Kirstie Alley and the Church of Scientology. I hope L. Ron Hubbard ain't the running theme of 2004.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Thus far it would be Thou's "I Like Girls In Russia" but I haven't heard much from '04. Boyskout's "Back To Bed" is my single of the year thus far, if it's in fact a single.

dlp9001, Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Highlights so far:

Tanakh - "Dieu Deuil"
The opening track is the least affecting on the album, an unfortunate opener, but "Exegesis," "Instrumental," "The Lord is in This Place... How Dreadful is This Place" & "Lady Eucharist" are all wonderful. They're a Montreal band (on alien8) that's relocated to Italy. I'd sort of describe them as a middle-eastern influenced Dirty Three fronted by a more cynical and world-weary Damien Rice type with a huge chip on his shoulder regarding Christianity (it's amusing, when I was first thinking of how to describe them, Dirty Three came immediately to mind, especially on the instrumental tracks, and I thought I could say it's like Dirty Three with a more conventional drummer, then I looked at the credits and discovered it actually was Dirty Three's Jim White playing the drums).

Department of Eagles - "The Whitey on the Moon UK LP"
They used to call themselves Whitey on the Moon UK, to explain the album title. Somewhere between Clue to Kalo and The Postal Service, this is laptop-beat-laden indie pop with a fantastic sense of humor.

Savath & Savalas - "Apropa't"
folky, spanish (& Catalan) nighttime music. marvelous.

cLOUDDEAD - "Ten"
Depending on my mood and the particular track, this can sound like the coolest thing I've ever heard, or the most annoying fucking shit I've ever heard. Just about what you'd expect, I'm sure. the first 2 tracks are stellar.

p:ano - "The Den"
p:ano call themselves "chamber pop." Really mellow indie music with random instruments popping in and out like saw, organ, dulcimer, French horn, woodblocks, treated piano, and wind-up music box.

Petracovich - "Blue Cotton Skin"
Not quite trip-hop, but with a definite Portishead influence, this is a beautiful album with great songs.

Dani Siciliano - "Likes..."
this reminds me quite a bit of Juana Molina's "Segundo" from last year, but it's frankly not as good. it's still quite pleasant, though, and worth a listen, if only for the surprising cover of Nirvana's "Come as You Are."

crap:
Jason Collett - "Motor Motel Love Songs"
not a trace of Broken Social Scene can be heard on this album. not a bad thing in itself, but Collett can't make up his mind as to whether he wants to be Jay Farrar, Ryan Adams, or a member of Wilco. and it's all ultimately boring.

Firewater - "Songs We Should Have Written"
but you didn't. should be titled "Songs We Never Should Have Tried to Play"

Lisa Gerrard/Patrick Cassidy - "Immortal Memory"
the worst imaginable combination of Gerrard's world music predilections and her soundtrack work. this is new age dreck for 4AD fans whose taste grew old along with them.

Courtney Love - "America's Sweetheart"
I repeat: I honestly didn't think music could be this bad, this generic, this grating, this useless.

John Vanderslice - "Cellar Door"
his singing never bugged me before, but god, does it ever on this album. and the songs are just shite. unfortunate.

90 Day Men - "Panda Park"
i was looking forward to this since hearing the lead single, "Too Late or Too Dead" last fall. i'll keep listening to the single and it's 2 intriguing, if lackluster, b-sides. the rest of Panda Park is at best dull ("Sequel"), at worst horrifically bad ("Silver and Snow").

Nellie McKay - "Get Away from Me"
i can't stand this. it annoys every cell in my body. and then we got an interview disc and i could hear what an idiot she is on top of it all. utter crap.

Minus 5 - "In Rock"
we all have Peter Buck and Jeff Tweedy to thank for the continued existence of this absolutely pointless endeavor. it sure must be nice to have friends in high places.

Thavius Beck - "Decomposition"
not everything Mush releases can be great. this is annoying.

Voodoo Child - "Baby Monkey"
retire Moby. please, for the children's sake, hang it up.

Franz Ferdinand, The Hiss, Liars, Walkmen
more of the same, and it all sucks.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Firewater - "Songs We Should Have Written"

I sense Alex in NYC's anger taking shape on the horizon, like thunderclouds.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

And that Courtney Love record... it is produced to an unlistenable degree. It could make a dog's ears hurt. Horrible, horrible music whose target audience are angsty tonedeaf teens who want to be punk.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

In anticipation of next weekend, a tie between Franz Ferdinand self-titled and TV on the Radio Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes.

anode (anode), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

so far The College Dropout, though I'm conflicted about it, and am still forming what I think are postive opinions on the Mountain Goats, Kylie Minogue, and Cee-Lo. Also really like the new album by Against Me!, though I think it's technically late '03.

Haven't started keeping track of singles yet.

(oh, and if you wanna consider Dizzee 2004 because of the U.S. release date, it's an easy #1)

chris herrington (chris herrington), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot to mention the The Mountain Goats record, "We Shall All Be Healed."

Disappointed.

Only his second studio album, after years and years of home and live recordings, and it seems John Darnielle has run out of steam. Which is startling, since it seemed he had enough steam to last a few lifetimes. There are some gems on the last half of the album, but the first 7 tracks or so sound like rewrites of the less thrilling tracks from 2002's "Tallahassee." None of which means this is bad music. Pitchfork's Will Bowers is dead on when he says "We Shall All Be Healed is like an ugly, hollow sports victory for a team anticipated to blow away the opposition."

Will Bowers. I dig that guy.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Saturday, 28 February 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Only his second studio album, after years and years of home and live recordings

Er? I mean, these days I really find the distinction between 'home' and 'studio' recordings awfully strange.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Umm... album is probably The Scissor Sisters, single's probably Blink-182. Very much looking forward to the Blonde Redhead album though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, so I downloaded the Iron & Wine album and just finished my first listen, and I'm astonished. I was really worried about how polished it would be, since it's his first studio record, but my god, it's gorgeous, moving, and better than the album I would've wanted. There's no "Upward over the Mountain," but "Cinder and Smoke" comes close, and as a whole, this one's probably better than "The Creek Drank the Cradle." I'm always nervous when i like an album so much right off the bat, since it's usually the ones I'm indifferent towards that later sneak up on me and become my favorites...

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

In no particular order (I could add comments but I'd just be repeating myself):

Dame Dash Presents The Warriors 4
Dangermouse Presents The Grey Album
I Am Robot And Proud, Grace Days*
I Remember Syria
The Dead C, The Damned*
The Homosexuals, Astral Glamour**
Twista, Kamikaze
The Walkmen, Bows & Arrows
Kanye West, The College Dropout
Brian Wilson, smilelive22004.mp3

* Late 2003 releases.
** I don't actually have it yet of course, but there's a two-CD Homosexuals set floating around on SlSk, and I think it's grand.

I Hated, Hated, Hated These Albums:

Xiu Xiu, Fabulous Muscles
Trans Am, Liberation

Xiu Xiu is shockingly awful.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I just wish the lead singer would make himself useful and go into gay porn or something.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

nah. it definitely has its moments - some of it is great.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

If it's got a moment, it's when there isn't any singing.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got College Dropout and I like it more than I thought I would. (why did I buy it if I didn't think I was going to like it?) The new Aaron Booth is really good. I just got the s/t to Triplets of Belleville and I've got it on right now. I think this is music I listen to alone and don't let on that I'm a fiend for it, like my Hawaiian folk obsession.
Also, Andre Ethier (of the Deadly Snakes) has a new solo album that's really good. Denise James's new album It's Not Enough To Love is seriously good. And Raising the Fawn's full-length is pretty all right too.

Huck, Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard that much released this year...most of what I have heard I haven't felt strongly about...but I really like the new Ghost album, Hypnotic Underworld.

stolenbus (stolenbus), Saturday, 28 February 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Is TI- Rubber Band Man considered this year? If so, it's my choice for single of the year so far.

Particle, "Launchpad," is absolutely kicking my ass.
But "America's Sweetheart" is a fine album, too, despite the backlash from everybody. Name another woman that rocks that hard in 2004.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Saturday, 28 February 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 28 February 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Courtney Love is Miss Havisham, Brody Dalle is that annoying girl that ends up falling for Pip anyway.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 28 February 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Decapitated's The Negation is really strong. If it was 10 minutes longer, it'd be one of the greatest death metal albums ever. As it is, I gotta recommend their last one, Nihility, as the ideal introduction to them. But even a substandard Decapitated album is better than most bands' best effort.

4. The Robot Ate Me On Vacation Swim Slowly

Tell me what you like about this. The songs I heard were kind of overtly sloppy and tongue-in-cheek. Not so listenable, even though the reviews had me excited...

I haven't heard that much from this year yet either, but so far I like the new ones from Ghost, Air, and Dave Douglas.

yessum add ghost. also, my choices do not include reissues and there have been a helluvalotta good reissues/archival things that have come out in the first 2 months of 2004 like the Flesh Eaters, Rodd Keith, DMZ, Henry Flynt and the Insurrections, Danny Ben-Israel, Metal Urbain, the Recommended Homosexuals reissue (though, me thinks, Chuck Warner's reissue will flatten it), etc.

You are correct, sir.

If anything I'd like to note that where Brody Dalle once sounded like Courtney Love, Courtney Love's best new stuff sounds like Brody.

I really don't agree with that. Brody just doesn't do much for me, I'm afraid. But I wouldn't say that to her face. Girl has shoulders like a nose tackle.

Mr Deeds (Mr Deeds), Sunday, 29 February 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The new Sun City Girls (Carnival Folklore Resurrection Radio) is all over the place (SE Asian cutups, ambient/drone-y stuff, freakouts, spoken word, rock-outs, etc. etc. etc.) and frequently amazing. First two tracks are alone worth the price of admission. There's also a strange impersonation of Palmer (from "Emerson, Lake, and myself") on there in an un-P.C. moment.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Sunday, 29 February 2004 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Indeed. I'm terribly shocked and am writing an angry letter this instant.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Sunday, 29 February 2004 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Judging from "Miss Abuse," _Codename: Dustsucker_ by Bark Psychosis will be incredible. I like the new Ghost album a ton, too (heard it yet, Ned?), and I'm excited to hear Pop Ambient 2004 (of course). My g-f's liking the Air album a lot, which I'm anxious to listen to. (But I can't seem to take this Ghost album out of the CD player at the moment...)

Clarke B., Sunday, 29 February 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Clarke B., Sunday, 29 February 2004 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

There might be a better option, actually. Drop me a line regardless.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 February 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Moonbabies, Weird War, and Blonde Redhead are all at the forefront for me.

Aluminum Group, Einstürzende Neubauten, Van Hunt, Emma Bunton, Poster Children, The Shocking Pinks, and Kaada are all quite sturdy contenders, though.

his name is spelled "gregory", of course.

i take it neither the junior boys nor the superpitcher albums are available via p2p yet..

adam west (adamwest), Sunday, 29 February 2004 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Adam: I don't think so, no.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Sunday, 29 February 2004 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

well people, since our tastes tend to overlap all the time i'm going to guess i'll have a similar response to the junior boys album.

adam west (adamwest), Sunday, 29 February 2004 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I assume you'd like the JB album.

I dunno, I have two 2004 albums so far...Probot and Preston School of Industry, I guess, oh and Span, but they aren't so great.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 29 February 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, I got those Lambchop CD's too, thought they'd be value for money. The guy's singing makes me laugh and I can only ever think of X-men when I listen to them, and Ned OTM about them being just kinda there.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 29 February 2004 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i forgot Delays’ Nearer than heaven as my no.2 single so far of the year.
Ferry corstern’s Rock your body rock is in my top 5 .
The new Starsailor is surprisingly nice too.

lid, Sunday, 29 February 2004 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The Necks, Lambchop, Kanye West. These are the only things I've paid money for. Still waiting on the BP album.

People who don't like Xiu Xiu are dead inside.

Stupid (Stupid), Sunday, 29 February 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

There might be a better option, actually. Drop me a line regardless.

Ned prefers a format which will allow him to inject it directly into his brain. More jaded listener, stronger kick required.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 29 February 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

People who don't like Xiu Xiu are dead inside.

People who like Xiu Xiu have cooties.

Seriously, how am I to respond to a charge like that?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 29 February 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Stick a knife in your chest and pull out your beating heart.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 29 February 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

People who don't like Xiu Xiu are dead inside.

doesn't this mean your life resembles a character in Dawn Of The Dead. THEY'RE ALL AROUND YOU.

i can't wait to hear the luciano lp!

i was just checking the peacefrog site and it looks like there's a kenny larkin lp in the pipeline, too. has anyone heard the promo yet?

Squarepusher - Ultravisitor
Mum - Summer Make Good
Isan - Meet Next Life

Lynskey (Lynskey), Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

My favorites are Bearsuit's Cat Spectacular! and Kanye West's The College Dropout. That's 2/3 of the 2004 releases I've heard so far. I have high hopes for new Mountain Goats and Pipas, both in the mail and taking too long to reach me.

brian patrick (brian patrick), Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

its shaping up to be a good year:

Devendra Banhart - excellent
Modest Mouse - probably their best
Bonnie Billy - very good
Probot - much better than average
Kanye West - outstanding
Avey / Grubbs split - half amazing (guess which half)

new Destroyer oughta be here any day, still psyched up for The Streets and Moz

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Album: Secret Wars by Oneida
Single: Milkshake by Kelis

Honourable mentions: Tropical Iceland by Fiery Furnaces, Arthur Russell (does this count?), Ultravisitor by Squarepusher, Yeah, collection of rare Papa M/Aerial M stuff (also, does this count?), Toxic by Britney, Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand, Mister Mental by 80's MBLD, Slow by Kylie, Feeling This by Blink 182.

It's been a low-key 2004 so far, not bought much new stuff but bought tonnes and tonnes of old stuff.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Ragget said:
Er? I mean, these days I really find the distinction between 'home' and 'studio' recordings awfully strange.
Well, many of Darnielle's home recordings were recorded direct to cassette tape. He would just record himself live. There was no production.

The Lex (The Lex), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty enthousiastic about my 2 only 2004 purchases:

Arthur Russel - The World of Arthur Russel never heard (t)his stuff, it's (after one listen) a pleasant surprise. people really danced to this in the 80s? [hard to imagine considering my experience with music/dancing in some rural dutch disco at that time...]

Air - Talkie Walkie

downloaded stuff I've enjoyed:
Liars - They were wrong so we drowned
The Walkmen - Bows and Arrows
DJ Dangermouse - The Grey Album
Modest Mouse - Good news for people who love bad news

willem (willem), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a new Fiery Furnaces??

Single, reworked (very well, more up beat) version of an album track. Not sure when it's out, soon if not already I think.

the owls 'our hopes and dreams', some of it sounds like a minnesotan version of jane weaver.

keith m (keithmcl), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Mountain Goats and, after one listen, Tego Calderon.

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Something within the universe of:

Blink 182 - "Feeling this"
Black Devil Disco Club
Tear the club up thugs - "Crazyndalazdayz"
Scissor Sisters - "Scissor Sisters"

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

So far:
Bows and Arrows - The Walkmen
They Were Wrong So We Drowned - The Liars
Fabulous Muscles - Xiu Xiu

Still hanging for the new ClouDDead and Bark Psychosis, I'd also like to hear the new Modest Mouse album. I've got the Electrelane album here too - seemed a lil bland, but after seeing all the props on here it may be worth checking out.

jess s (too much for my mirror), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

after having some time to really absorb it on a long drive tonight, i'll have to add Oneida's Secret Wars to my list. my favorite start-to-finish album of theirs.

jonviachicago, Monday, 1 March 2004 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I must say, I was unaware till now that "dead inside" = "have ears"

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i've heard nothing from 2004 yet, oddly. but the albums i'm looking forward to hearing: moonbabies, bearsuit, blonde redhead, bearsuit, camera obscura.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 1 March 2004 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the only records I've got this year have been the Bonnie Prince Billy and Lords Of The Decks 2 and I enjoy both of them a lot.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 1 March 2004 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Easily, Einsturzende Neubauten's 'Perpetuum Mobile', which is fast becoming my favorite EN album. They managed to really capitalize on the subtlety and the melancholia of their last few albums, while getting rid of the smart-alecish quirkiness that made them kind of annoying.

Special shout out to 'America's Sweetheart'. What's the deal with Kirstie Alley, ie. is she involved in Scientology?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 1 March 2004 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"The world of Arthur Russell", and that's about it really.

Rob M (Rob M), Monday, 1 March 2004 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The Good:

Franz Ferdinand
The Monolith
Porest
Stereolab
The Walkmen
Sufjan Stevens
OCS
Casual Dots

The Bad:

Department of Eagles (there are no words)
The Microphones (but I should've known - it's a live Microphones record, for Pete's sake)
PSOI
The Special Goodness

...and there's a lot of stuff in between those two poles. Tortoise record isn't really bad, just ultra boring. Mirah record doesn't do much for me yet.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 1 March 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah add for me Tego Calderon, El Enemy de los Guasibiri, and Paulina Rubio, Pau-latina. The former is already BEST title of the year, the latter is already WORST title of the year.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

but the Rubio is a great pop record as far as I've heard it...and "Perros" is a reggaeton track!!!

I really lurve the Stereolab and expect the Cee-lo to be all kinds of great but I'm going to have to give the nod to RJD2's When We Last Spoke for now.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

1. iron and wine
2. bonnie prince billy

Chris V (Chris V), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The Ghost is OK, but as far as retro-psyche folk albums, I like Espers' s/t more. Actually, I listen to the Ghost more for the cool drumming than the songs.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

1. The Walkmen, "Bows and arrows"
2. Kanye West, "College Dropout"
3. Stereolab, "Margerine Eclipse"

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm very surprised by how much consensus there is on here, I must say. The Stereolab thread late last year, for example, suggested hardly anyone gave much of a shit about them anymore

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 1 March 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

well, it's only March 1. hardly anything's been out yet. wait till June, or October.

I just got the new Sergent Garcia record, La Semilla Escondida in the mail, and it's hot hot hot.

Good to know. I loved the last one. I understand why Manu Chao gets all the press, but Garcia deserves some love too.

spittle (spittle), Monday, 1 March 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, add Oneida to that, I knew there was something else. Just bought the new Keelhaul today too, sounds pretty ripping...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 1 March 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

hey spittle, yeah the last SGarcia record was just okay to me but I like this one, he's splitting the diff betwixt Cuba and Jamaica, I'm halfway through a slow jazzy sexy 9-minute smolder called "El Regreso" and this trombone solo is making me horny.

by the way spittle you have interesting taste in music.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 1 March 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Stooges Brass Band "It's About Time" is fantastic, Kanye and Twista are really good, and I like Soulja Slim's "Years Later...A Few Months After" (late 2003 I think but whatever).

I have no doubt that I'm going to love the new Cee-Lo and the new Bad Plus in the next couple weeks, and I'm looking forward to that Telefon Tel Aviv despite having heard mixed responses.

Now that pick I do second heartily.
I haven't heard lots of 'o4 recordings, to be frank, but amidst those few that I've listened to so far, 'Salute Your Soul' really sticks out.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 1 March 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

So far, the only ones I've heard that probably have even a slight chance of being end-of-year top 10 are Kanye, Holmes Brothers - Simple Truths, and Courtney Love.

Beyond that, I've also liked Danger Mouse, Oneida, Squarepusher, Royce da 5'9", JC Chasez, and Modest Mouse. The new Murs and Madvillain are also nice, despite the annoying promo shit.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Monday, 1 March 2004 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

hands down, The Homosexuals' CD....comp of long lost post punk....combines Gof4/Wire herky jerkiness with Buzzcocks pop hook....absolutely brilliant well worth picking up for any fans of Brit rock 1978-1981 era.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 1 March 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"amidst those few that I've listened to so far, 'Salute Your Soul' really sticks out"

Yeah, it's a strange record - can't get it out of my head, it all seems very deliberate and sneaky but comes across as being shy and lo-fi. Did like it though. I think.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Monday, 1 March 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

CiM - "do not multiply models"
anthony rother - "live at club fuse"

mick pack (mick pack), Monday, 1 March 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Some things I like a lot so far (albums in asterisks, singles in quotes, and leaving out stuff I can't think of right now) are Allegrijes Y Rebjujos *Disco Allegrijes* and *Disco Rebujo,* Achimides Badkar *Tre*, Chromeo *She's in Control,* Couch Flambeau *Did a Power Slide in the Taco Stand,* Death Comet Crew *This is Riphop,* Eamon "F*ck It", Hold Steady *Almost Killed Me*, Living Things *Black Skies in Broad Daylight*, Measles Mumps Rubella "Fountain of Youth," Martina McBride "This One's for the Girls," Mekons *Punk Rock,* Old Bombs *Audios,* Dizzee Rascal *Boy in Da Corner* (since I didn't vote for it last year), Red Swan *After the Barn Goes,* Arthur Russell *The World of Arthur Russell,* Britney Spears "Toxic," Skye Sweetnam "Number One" and "Billy S.", Truth and Janey *Erupts*, Usher/Lil Jon/Ludacris "Yeah!," Winterhawk *Wind From the Sun,* Ying Yang Twins "Salt Shaker," *Monster Records: The Seventies Sampler*. The new Kenney Chesney album has some excellent songs on it (especially the one that sounds like Bruce Springsteen and rhymes "in the morning I'm leavin" with "going back to Cleveland") and also some absolute crap on it; I have no idea yet what I'll wind up thinking about it, over all.

Worst album of the year, so far: TV on the Radio.

Couch Flambeau *Did a Power Slide in the Taco Stand,*

They're still around? I'm amazed!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 March 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

They may or may not be -- that's a reissue compilation thing, Ned. (Lots of the records I listed are actually old music. Including Archimedes Badkar, whose name I spelled wrong.)

chuck, Monday, 1 March 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Either way, rock, I'm glad to know it's out there. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 March 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I like about half of the David Banner and Nellie McKay albums too, come to think of it -- some tracks a whole lot. I'm not sure which songs are the singles on those ones, though. Both albums are a chore and/or pain in the ass to try to play all the way through, though I don't know if I should hold that against them.

chuck, Monday, 1 March 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Chuck, didn't you royally dis that Eamon track not too long ago? (It's possible I may be imagining things.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 1 March 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I read Danger Mouse as Dagmar Mouse, which might be a better name.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 1 March 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I totally hated Eamon's song when I first heard it. Which means it may well have a shot at my top ten, now that I like it. (Esp. if I wind up convincing myself he's the new Dion DiMucci or somebody.)

And I keep forgetting Oneida, which I admittedly liked a lot when I first got a copy of it about six months or so ago, but I assume there must be some reason why I keep keep forgetting it. And the Peelers, Wolverine, Kwisp, Johnny Vicious, Orphaned Land, Kill Me Tomorrow, and/or Cheval De Frise may well be better than Old Bombs or somebody else above, I guess, but now I'm just starting to obsessive-compulsively confuse myself again, and as usual I have lots of work I'm procrastinating from doing. I really need to go cold turkey from this shit somehow (or from making posts about it, at least).

chuck, Monday, 1 March 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Couch Flambeau is still going, you can get that CD from their website (as my wife did, she is a HUGE fan), Neil answers emails promptly. Biggest complaint: they left "She's the Girl With the Big Forehead" off! It's a greatest hits CD, so put on your best song for chrissake!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 1 March 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Truth and Janey! Aren't they some hard and hairy 70s dudes? Where have I heard that name before... lp trader lists or something. Weren't they from Detroit?

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 1 March 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

iowa! davenport, i think. only studio album came out in 1976 -- *no rest for the wicked,* pressing of 1000 copies supposedly. *erupts* is a live one, and my ears say it rocks even harder.

chuck, Monday, 1 March 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

new ones:

The Red Thread - Tension Pins
eh.

Lanterna - Highways
it troubles me how easily they transition from sublime to elevator music and back again. i felt this way about their previous two albums as well. another couple and they might have enough good material to fill a CD-R.

Deerhoof - Milk Man
i'm getting a little tired of them, to be honest. is this 5 albums in 4 years?

Rasputina - Frustration Plantation
i'm getting tired of them too. the noises are all swell. i love the instrumentation, i love their voices. i don't like the affectation and most of the lyrics. and do we need spoken word bits with no resolution or point about white frontier girls enslaved by wild indians? i get the impression they think they're incredibly funny or clever or something. there are some quite good songs here though.

Shearwater - Winged Life
i'm startled they've managed to sound so different without drastically altering anything. nowhere near as folky as the first 2 albums, a bit like an early-80's new wave band without a drummer who only do ballads. suits me fine.

Son of the Velvet Rat - By My Side
lost somewhere between Spokane and Smog, with a little bhp tossed in every now and again. i like.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Monday, 1 March 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

hey Salvador, don't you think that maybe without the affectation Rasputina becomes very boring, and that their very foppery is what makes them interesting? (I do.) (If you find them interesting.) (I do.)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

From '04 it's Junior Boys Last Exit (well, the new tracks) and behind that Air - and that's all I've heard that's worth talking about apart from crazy insano good internet mixes of stuff from last year.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Chuck, didn't you royally dis that Eamon track not too long ago? (It's possible I may be imagining things.)

haha yeah! I'm writing this up for the Voice so I don't want to get to into it, but the album is nowhere as great as the single (as far as his "ho wop" concept goes, he's consistent about the ho and sadly strays from the wop - and don't ask me about his mentor Legendary Rapper Milk Dee) and I'm pissed they sent me a clean promo copy.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Grey Album, Superpitcher, Kanye, David Banner (technically 03, but it was Dec), the two Arthur Russell comps.

Cee Lo was disappointing.

Oops, I forgot *The Third Unheard: Connecticut HipHop 1979-1983,* which is as great as you might imagine and probably better.

Pas/Cal will soon rule the world.

Mountain Goats

Catherine (Catherine), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Mountain Goats, followed by Hella, Califone, John Vanderslice, and Xiu Xiu. Most of the stuff I've been really into lately are leftovers from 2003 (Fiery Furnaces, Long Winters, Joggers, Rosebuds).

Nick Mirov (nick), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Chuck, THANK YOU for bringing that Third Unheard comp to my attention. It (the concept) sounds super great.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

re: the Deerhoof album, after a couple of listens, it seems not very interesting, despite some of the usual twists and turns. However, given that I don't think their songs have really been looked at as closely as they deserve in the past (even with some critical support), I wouldn't be surprised if this album becomes a fave over time. It seems like a subtle record.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

  • Milk Man is some of the most compositionally serious rock music of the past few years.

  • Twista's verse on "Slow Jamz" is oddly my favourite moment on College Dropout, which is not to say that the rest of it isn't pretty darn good

  • Lambchop's double is great but it repeats itself a lot, dontcha think?
  • fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

the indieness of this thread is making my teeth hurt

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

    except I'm not that indie

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

[i'm also wondering who the hell all these people are. i feel like an old man wondering who took my teeth during the night.]

    anyway, more good stuff:

    dj olive - bodega
ghostface killah - hidden dars ii
    black devil disco club
memphis bleek - "just blaze, free, and bleek" (gee, i wonder who produced this. triggering all sorts of weird rap nerd reflexes with that scratching.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

probably the reason a lot of this is indie is that they push albums now for the college scene (to get the spring semester play) while the mainstream is totally waiting for the summer.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Is new Ghostface up there with Supreme Clientele?

(plus is that DJ Olive = We's DJ Olive's long awaited solo record?)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

alex it's not the new, actual ghostface album but a mix of like rarities and shit. i thin a few of the tracks will probably make it onto the album though. and yeah, it's the same dj olive.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess mine would go something like:

    madvillain - madvillainy
    wiley
    junior boys - last exit
cut copy - bright like neon love
    hell - ny muscle

    glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

So far for me, The Mountain Goats by a mile. With its full band sound, I prefer it to Tallahassee. I know I'm alone on this.

I also like Air and the Mekons and (if he still counts) Luomo -- what a nice, poppy record. Looking forward to the Hold Steady and Cee-Lo.

Not That Chuck, Tuesday, 2 March 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

    more stuff:

erlend oye - dj kicks (depends on how big a tolerance you have for him singing over the tracks, but it's got "so weit noch nie", the rapture's "i need your love", villalobo's "dexter", "2 after 909", and a couple other good-great tracks. shame about the avenue d inclusion, though.)

tiefscwharz - "ghost track (blackstrobe mix)" (thanx to ronan...mmmmm...more bleep'n'bass revival plz)

that hold steady guy's voice makes me want to spork my eyes out.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, the ave d thing kept me from mentioning the oye mix, which really is shockingly good otherwise

    Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(and i have serious reservations about every record i listed. i haven't fallen in love w/ a disc yet) (nor a song really, aside "you don't know my name" and maybe "meglomaniac" (depending on my mood))

So many great reissues have just come out, haven't had a chance to hear many 'new' LPs as yet.

But here's a singles list, in approx. order:

Stereolab – ‘Rose, My Rocket-Brain! (Rose, le cerveau électronique de ma fusée!)’
Beenie Man feat. Ms Thing – ‘Dude’
G-Unit feat. Joe – ‘Wanna Get To Know You’
    Brandy – ‘Turn It Up’
Kanye West – ‘Through the Wire’
    Zero 7 – ‘Home’
    Kelis – 'Milkshake'
Belle and Sebastian – ‘I’m A Cuckoo (by The Avalanches)’
    Britney Spears – ‘Toxic’
Basement Jaxx feat. Lisa Kekaula – ‘Good Luck’
    Scissor Sisters – ‘Comfortably Numb’
Joss Stone – ‘Fell In Love With A Boy’
    Emma – ‘I'll Be There’
Beyonce – ‘Me Myself & I (Panjabi MC "Eastern Delight" mix)’
    Busted – ‘Air Hostess’

    Jeff W (zebedee), Thursday, 4 March 2004 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

In terms of albums, the only thing that I really love is the Scissor Sisters record, but I had that in 2003, so it sorta doesn't count for me.

There's a lot of records by big favorites of mine coming out later this year, plus lots and lots of things I can't hope to anticipate, so I'm just being patient. It's only two months into the year, no worries.

Sung Tongs is increible. It is more song based than most AC stuff, most tracks are around 4 minutes long, and you can sing along with it. If you saw AT and PB perform as a duo last year, it's all that material, but it is recorded so well and lots of layers have been added. The record has a lot of really great percussion. It manages to be fun to listen to and still very innovative and idiosyncratic.
I am really excited to hear the Double record.
Has anyone heard the new Magnetic Fields?

Mitchell (Mitchell), Thursday, 4 March 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

sung tongs=new simon & garfunkel, for real. with all that "new" implies. fuck-you talent going on, except they are not out to prove anything to anyone. they just do their thing and happen to be better than everybody. i always though they were "song-based" though so i don't understand that qualification so much. my favorite one since danse manatee, though i love them all.

duke jupiter, Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Britney's "Toxic" might be my favorite pop song of the past 3 or so years.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it's pretty good. I've gone from being curious but ambivalent about it to positively liking it.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, song based is a lazy description. But I think a lot of their records can be seen as one long song, where this is a collection of a bunch.
Somewhat counter intuitive to that, I will say that sung tongs is the most complete feeling and successful seeming record they've done, followed by campfire and manatee.

Like I can see the idea or spark behind each song, and it feels like the nailed every fucking one.

Mitchell (Mitchell), Thursday, 4 March 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Of the 30-or-so discs and albums i've bought thus far, none of them have a release date within 2004. I've yet to listen to Bob Pollard's Edison's Demos but mentioning it in this forum would probably get me e-pelted with rotting fruit.

Jason Molina - Pyramid Electric Co.
Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender

Less than spectacular but still enjoyed:
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - Sings Greatest Palace Music
Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days
the Mountain Goats - We Shall All Be Healed
    Will Oldham - Seafarer's Music

    Have been disappointed by:
Blonde Redhead - Misery is a Butterfly

Really surprised that I actually enjoyed:
Modest Mouse - Good News for...

    Can't wait for:
    Magnetic Fields - i

Oh, forgot, toss that Ghost record under "... but still enjoyed"

cws (cws), Sunday, 21 March 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

    Animal Collective, Sung Tongs
TV on the Radio, Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes

Only two things I really love (and maybe not the TV on the Radio). Especially enjoy Electrelane and Tortoise, as well.

Alex Pittman (Alex Pittman), Sunday, 21 March 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, Kno's White Albulum remix -- I love that damn thing. And I have yet to hear Ghost, though I expect great things.

Alex Pittman (Alex Pittman), Sunday, 21 March 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone is going to have to do something truly amazing to make an album that I'm going to love more than the Fiery Furnaces' Blueberry Boat this year.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 21 March 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 22 March 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i struggled to come up with answer for this as most of my recent faves have all been mixtapes (Steinski/yoda/format etc) so cant really put them as new releases, then last week i got my first showstopper album of 2004.
tis the new one from Brothers in Sound honcho Paul Hannford .. "Sancho - cha cha mancha" which is due out on superglider. totally wonderful stuff. if you like Brothers in Sound then this is a contuation of that type of old school Beta Band weirdness and lovely melodies .. a headphone experience..

    mark e (mark e), Monday, 22 March 2004 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

    roughly in order:

    Big Tymers, Big Money Heavyweight

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 22 March 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender
Jens Lekman - When I Said I Wanted to Be Your Dog (probably going to be my favorite records of this year)
various Animal Collective & Junior Boys releases.

    Belle & sebastian - I´m a cuckoo (avalanches mix) 12"
    parts of the electrelane album
    kelis - milkshake 12"

wish i liked it more: blonde redhead, superpitcher

dan (dan), Monday, 22 March 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

1 sophia - people are like seasons
most touching album i have heard this year

    2 stereolab - margerine eclipse
instant easy listening classic with the original vu+neu! sound plus some added electronics

    3 lambchop - awcmon/noyoucmon
very consistent. hardly a bad song. nice instrumentals which could be from western film scores. a little too sugary violins. live they are better.

4 liars - they were wrong so we drowned
only new ny band doing something interesting with the post-punk heritage

    alex in mainhattan (alex63), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Albums/Mixes-Ivan Smagghe's Death Disco, did I like any other albums??? Was Serie Noire 2 this year? Maybe it was I forget!

Oh and the relatively new Oxia record, 24 Heures, on Goodlife is the best dance artist album I've heard in some time, if you're into your techno or whatever.

    Singles/songs

    Tiefschwarz-Ghostrack (Blackstrobe Remix)

Zoot Woman-Taken It All (Le Knight Club Remix)

    Oxia-Reflexion

    Alan Braxe/Fred Falke-Rubicon

    LCD Soundsystem-Yeah (Stupid Mix)

    Kylie-Slow (Chemical Brothers Mix)

Scissor Sisters-Comfortably Numb (and the Paper Faces remix too)

    Nitzer Ebb-Murderous (Phil Kieran Mix)

    Black Devil-Follow Me

Probably a few more I'm forgetting. 04 is already a better year for dance than 03.

coco rammstein, Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine's changed, a tie between Mission of Burma and Dylan's Live: 1964. Maybe a three-way with the new Wilco, but I haven't given that one a substantial listen yet.

Albums I can still only vote for Nellie McKay's, but I also own Stereolab's and the new one by the Talk. Nothing else has proven necessary to keep.

The singles scene has been pretty fucking amazing for only four months.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 24 April 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Fennesz is probably the album of the year for me now. I have no idea what is a single and what isn't any more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 April 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

If it's on the radio, singles chart has a video for it or is released as a single it's probably a single.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 April 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

    If it's on the radio

Unless you're a nerd and you listen to college radio, that is.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 24 April 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

    Anyway...

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 24 April 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I was almost gonna mention the Broken Social Scenes' "Backyards" until I realized one of the repeated lines goes "So hard for angels/to be courageous," which is almost as icky as the "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9!/Once in Germany someone said 'nein'!" line on the Wilco album or anything on Xiu-Xiu's "Support Our Troops Oh! (Godspell Oh!)"

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 24 April 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

    "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9!/Once in Germany someone said 'nein'!"

I am so buying the Wilco album now (which I probably should anyway since I really enjoy their last three).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 April 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless you're a nerd and you listen to college radio, that is.

I have heard of this college radio.

Anyway, I did really like that Scissors Sisters song Ally shared along the other day, so that ranks up there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 April 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Not the "Comfortably Dumb" thing, "Music is the Virus" or whatever it was called.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 April 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm actually almost close to liking it; the vocals are still a major stumbling block (it's the hoary "vocals overwhelmed by music" = "human being overwhelmed by life" trick) but the avant moves and the krautrock grooves do convince.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 24 April 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

it = A Ghost Is Born

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 24 April 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

    they've earned my trust

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 April 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

A few have mentioned Ghost's Hypnotic Underworld. I don't see this album getting ENOUGH props. The rock tracks on that are just staggeringly good.

I also think the Electrelane album is really, really good.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 24 April 2004 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I kinda like the Frankee song.

    jel -- (jel), Sunday, 25 April 2004 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard two songs ("It All Falls Down" and "Through the Wire," although in the second case it helped that I knew the background about his jaw being wired shut, before I heard it) from that Kanye West CD and I like them both. In fact, aside from "Toxic," they might be my favorite singles of the year (not that I am paying much attention).

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 25 April 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 25 April 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Does College Dropout suck as badly as the lead single from Kanye's album? Because that lead single SUCKS, other than having a semi catchy beat (omg...pitchshifted)

And, guys, I also need your assistance.

WHO IS THE ASSHOLE WHO DARED USE A PITCHSHIFTED VERSION OF LENNY WILLIAMS' CLASSIC "CAUSE I LOVE YOU" AS A BEAT FOR THEIR TERRIBLE RAP SONG?

No, I'm not against sampling that song, but THE END RESULT WAS TERRIBLE AND I MUST KILL WHOEVER DID IT!

    kaney, Sunday, 25 April 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I really want Kanye to fall under a truck. Is that so wrong?

    Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 26 April 2004 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Though I really want to reserve judgement until I hear the whole album, currently I am really blase about every Kanye West track I hear. Though I really want him to do a remake of "Witch Doctor."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 26 April 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually if he ever collabos with Nelly I DEMAND that "Witch Doctor"'s chorus be the hook.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 26 April 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

And Jamie Foxx really needs to do "She Wants To Party All The Time 2004"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 26 April 2004 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Miccio so OTM, if only so Chapelle or Rock can't get there first (is 'No Sex (In The Champagne Room)' the 'Rodney Dangerfield RAPS!' for our generation?)

    Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 26 April 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Durutti Column, Live at the Venue

    Bark Psychosis
    The Necks
    The Beta Band
    Embrace

Not heard Wiley yet but will pick it up today. Looking forward (not half) to the Orbital. As for singles, I'm with Ned - I no longer know what is and what isn't, what's this year and what's a hangover from last year. Most annoying. Only not.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 26 April 2004 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah yeah, and the Fennesz too.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Monday, 26 April 2004 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

    all sorts has impressed.
    so far albums are :
dj signify, beta band, dj format mixtape, cherrystones mix, pilot to gunner, sixtoo, and some new unreleased stuff from Grand Mal - in case any of you have ever taken to their glorious glam/rolling stones/nyc guitar thing ..

    mark e (mark e), Monday, 26 April 2004 09:17 (twenty-two years ago)

    oh yeah I forgot Wiley

    Michael B, Monday, 26 April 2004 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Stick Wiley, Junior Boys and *possibly* Devandra Banhart on my previous list, plus the new Kid606, which is a bunch of alt. versions and outtakes that rocks like fucking unholy fuck. More so than 'Kill Sound...' in fact.

There are quite a few good singles but I couldn't think of many off the top of my head.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 26 April 2004 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yet another thumbs up for the Devendra Banhart from over here. Followed by Bonnie Prince Billy.

    Franz Ferdinand
singles- von Bondies seconded. Otherwise I have no idea what year it is

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

For fans of slowly developing, mammoth mega sounds, check out the new
Birchville Cat Motel double cd BEAUTIFUL SPECK TRIUMPH on Last Visible Dog. For fans of Pelt, Vibracathedral, etc... One of my favorites thus far.
Also Ghost, Oneida, Devendra, Espers, Homosexuals, mmmm.
Got promos of the new Acid Mothers Temple (great, but nothing new. Like La Novia in more ways than one, which is fine) and the new Kinski (utterly terrible, soooo boring).

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Blonde Redhead - Misery is a Butterfly
Lali Puna - Faking the Books

Wiley, Streets, Erlend Oye, Kanye, LOTD 2, DJ Koze, Superpitcher, Air...dare I say Liars?

Disappointed by Beta Band, Lil Flip, and Felix, though some of the tracks on the latter are my favorite so far this year.

Want to hear Junior Boys and the new Areal Bis neublahblah thing.

Also...is there going to be a new Petey Pablo record anytime soon?

    @d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I like that Liars record, too!

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm digging the !!!, no lie. It's way better than I expected, occasionally annoying vocals and all.

and, yeah, I like that Liars record, too, but then again I have been known to be a contrarian jerk.

WAIT WAIT WAIT...a NEW Will to Power record? This better not be Chuck just liking something for nostalgic reasons because then that means he can't complain about me still thinking the Cure are wonderful. (Not that he's ever done that much anyway, granted.)

    and the new Kinski (utterly
    terrible, soooo boring).

Strictly speaking it's Herzog rather than Kinski, and as such is I think a lurvly diversion.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been mildy disappointed in albums I was really looking forward too, even if parts of them are still fantastic: Cee Lo, the Bad Plus, the new Rebirth Brass Band, Craig Taborn 'Junk Magic', etc.

I'm still listening to and really enjoying Twista, the new Tortoise, and the Lil' Stooges Brass Band.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't realize Craig Taborn had worked with Susie Ibarra. I seem to have finally gotten interested or re-interested in this very incestuouos, mostly New York, avant-garde/free jazz scene.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I also like: "No Me Hace Falta " and "Si Me Preguntan," from the new Victor Manuelle CD, but I don't think these are singles, and "Ta Loca" by Son de Cali (especially when I imagine what it would sound like in a club). Not sure that the latter is a single either, but I bet it is.

i mean there is less of a "consensus" than there would have been year-end 2001, i think. at the same time there is a NEW consensus of a certain stripe (i think). there's also just more people, a shitload of whom i'm not even sure i know who they are.

I was wondering if you meant that things were more or less pop than before.

Begs2Differ, I will ask you here, since you are more likely to see it here: have you heard the new Los Amigos Invisibles? Apparently it has some (slightly unconventional) salsa songs on it (without giving up the other type of stuff they were doing before). I haven't bought their past CDs, but I might by this one.

Actually, has anyone heard the new Los Amigos Invisibles?

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

what's the new concensus? or are you following up your indie makes your teeth hurt comment from before?

I'll still go with Sung Tongs. However, my new concensus is that I'm more excited by a few tracks than a few albums.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 28 May 2004 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ BEAST OF LEGEND, Friday, 28 May 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

actually i do wonder if threads like this do bring out more lurkers, for whatever reason. or maybe ilm has just fractured so much into everyone staying on their own particular threads that all these "new" names have been around for months posting to 20th century comp or french rap threads or something that i've not seen because i can barely keep up with the stuff that interests me a lot these days.

i guess the new concensus is no concensus at all.

Strongo, you like the Cee-Lo CD, huh? I'm a little surprised, since I like what I've heard from it, and it seems like it has too much throwback appeal to people who want to hear something like 70's soul for you to like it. (Maybe I never really understood your objections to Speakerboxxx, etc.) I don't love it, but if I were limited to listening to fairly mainstream pop stuff, this would be much more welcome than most of what is out there.

(I admit that I didn't even know his name before ILM, as far as I remember.)

Add "California" (the guajira or "guajira"). It would be a bitch to dance to, since there are some sudden unexpected changes in rhythm, but it's a pretty good song. I don't even mind the violin touches, since they are there more as a reference to the old school charanga sound than as a main part of the orchestration. I don't think I've heard them do anything of this sort before. I wish I understood the words, since there is probably some sort of punning on "Cali."
