Please go to your porch light and turn it on for the next hour to show us your solidarity.
If you're in your car now, please honk your horn. Flash your lights -- wherever you are.
If you're in bed, get ready to dance on your back in techni-color. And get ready for the MFA -- the international Midnight Funk Association. It's been called to order, dedicated to the faithful.
The international membership of the MFA. Most definitely bringing the planet back to life at midnight, proving that this is the first day of the rest of your life.
As I walk into this arena every night, I call the MFA to order.
The word is:
Hold on tight.
Don't let go.
Whenever you feel like you're nearing the end of your rope, don't slide off.
Tie a knot.
Keep hanging.
Keep remembering.
That there ain't nobody bad like you.
If the journey of a thousand miles is to begin, it must begin with that first step. So that's why I keep walking.
This session of the Midnight Funk Association is now being called to order. Electrifyin' Mojo presiding [not Broheems -- ed.].
May the funk be with you. Always.
(Channel One's "Technicolor" [aka "Baby Got Back"] starts)
If you can't go to sleep, get up and dance. If you've just eaten and you're lying down now, [???] exercise [???]. Don't go to sleep on it, 'cause it all turns to calories [???]. Look at it like the Midnight Aerobics. The Funkaerobics.
["Technicolor" continues, etc.]

far as i know, princes high school band grand central was named after larry grahams 70s band graham central station, not grand funk railroad - i could be wrong though.
also, i didnt quite get how SOTT as an album was prince being his most JB-like. apart from beautiful night and housequake, i dont really see it. i mean, apart from the emphasis on funky choppy rhythm guitar, i dont think JB's influence is all *that* evident on princes records to begin with. its generally quite secreted.
i was a bit dissapointed to see beck or outkast werent mentioned in the list of people who were inspired by prince, im sure there were others that could have been mentioned. similarly, i thought there could have been some mention of white artists who copied prince in addition to the black artists who xeroxed his sound. princes influence was pretty far reaching IMHO (or perhaps im wrong, i was only about 5 at the time purple rain came out.)
i also thought reducing jam and lewis 80s productions to being simply patterned after prince's own wasnt totally fair or correct - they were a lot more faithful to R&B conventions than prince ever was (his work for the time excepted).

fwiw, i really enjoyed this book. i think i read it in one sitting. the personal stuff is nicely balanced with the criticism and factual information. to even suggest that the critic listens to music in some holier-than-thou objective void is ludicrous.
