I'm trying to put together a collection (spanning, I dunno, maybe 5 or so CDs) of French music (specifically but not necessarily limited to french vocals), prefereably in some kind of chronological order from the 60s to the present day.

I appreciate that this is somewhat of an incredibly mammoth task, and can never properly cover the entire spectrum, but I can make some kind of attempt at it at least.

I'm using the ILM Rough Guide To... threads as a starting point, but any other contributions would be greatly appreciated.

As gareth sort of implies, finding anything from the 80s worthy enough to compare with the rest of the CD might be tricky.

60s: Michel Polnareff is a must-include. I could mention loads of female singers too, but others no doubt will name them in sufficient numbers to cover what you need.

what about some hip-hop? Solaar the obvious choice ('Nouveau Western' if you're not gonna pout Gainsbourg's gorgeous 'Bonnie & Clyde' on this thing, 'A La Claire Fontaine' and 'Le Concubine D'Hemogblin' most worthy too) - of course there's more out there. i started to do a French Hip Hop Rough Guide but quickly realised i hadn't heard enough of the real stuff to attempt to even bluff it (like i usually do)

One of the best things to happen to french music was Time Bomb Commando (X-Men, Hifi, Lunatic, Oxmo Puccino, Jedi, Pit Baccardi, LSO). Just try to d/l their infamous freestyle on parisian radio station Generations 88.2 FM circa 1997-1998.

I'd suggest those tracks:

Anyone know much about any of those leftfield French rock bands of the 90s - Sister Iodine, Heliogabale, Purr etc? I'm aware that there was *something* going on there, but not being much of a French speaker, I dunno exactly what.

If this retrospective collection were actually to be released as a proper boxset with a nice booklet and so on, would it mean France had to split up?

The obvious: Magma, Heldon. Less obvious but essential: ZNR (first LP, 'Barricades 3'). Whatever became of DDAA? Seems that one has been written out of history. Strange.

More Brigitte Fontaine/Areski! Their importance in blending the chanson tradition with middle eastern music, jazz, rock, and post-May 1968 consciousness is very important.

Anyone here ever heard the 60s recordings of Stella? Stella, a 15 year-old ye-ye singer - later to become Stella Vander of Magma. Very odd pop singles, these. (There is or was a double cd of her complete 60s output - NOTHING like Magma but quite odd for the genre they are part of.)

well, that's what i said, anyway. the accusation was in a piece in the guardian, by a writer i can't remember saying there were no africans in the arrondisements used in the film when they are actually quite african areas. this is bollocks coz the director was in la haine is well known for being pretty political in exactly the other direction, plus the film wasn't exactly a documentary in the 1st place... one of the most imbecilic bits of movie crit i've ever read (however, this is pretty much a qualification for being a guardian critic - my own couple of appearances in said organ excepted, naturally! - so you shouldn't be surprised)

You should include something by French punk pioneers Bérurier Noir. Try "Salut à toi", "Fils de...", "L'Empereur Tomato Ketchup", or "Vietnam, Laos, Cambodge".

yeah, richie had pretty good electro-bebete-pop hits. very underated in france. which is weird since lio is pretty respected nowadays in "the scene" (mostly thanks to jacno).
anyway, about the list : am i wrong or is johnny not in it (ok he's belgian but he's the quintessential french rocker... together with eddy mitchel and dick rivers, so...).

i am stunned that no one has mentioned dominique a. or francoiz breut or katerine or programme... the lithium label in general, as it once was. what about yann tiersen or a lot of the folks associated with ici d'ailleurs, such as dominique pettitgand?

almost all of dominique's cds are stunning, most particularly "la fossette" from 1993 and the more recent "auguri". his live shows are not to be missed either, especially when he performs solo as documented on his live dvd.
