Let's get the ball rolling!

From COF:

The album is currently being planned for release on June 22nd or 29th in North America.

The video for the new single is being directed by Floria Sigismondi. She has worked with Incubus, Christina Aguilera and Sigur Ros, but also did 'Obstacle 1' for Interpol. Check out her website for full credits.

Curefest looks to be kicking off on July 24th in Miami, Florida. Main stage lineup is The Cure, Interpol, The Rapture and Mogwai

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 16 April 2004 11:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cure, Interpol, The Rapture and Mogwai

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 16 April 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't be sad, coz three out of four ain't bad.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 April 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if this line-up will also do the European leg.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 16 April 2004 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that like "Do the Hansa" ?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 April 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

That distant thump you heard was the sound of my heart shooting out of the top of my head.

Ow.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 April 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

They're gonna play the new single on the Tonight Show at the end of the month..

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 16 April 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Mind you, having seen The Cure at a 200-capacity venue recently, of course I'm not really all that excited by this...*ducks*

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, wait, main stage lineup? There's going to be a second stage too? Huh. Well, something to escape to when InterYawn comes on...

As for you, Charlie, yeah yeah yeah YOU'LL GET YOURS.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Envy is my radar.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 April 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

okay for real I'm following this tour.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Cure has set a June 22 release date for their 13th album, which is still untitled. The set is due via Ross Robinson's I Am imprint. Meanwhile, The Cure has some American appearances booked in advance of the album's release. They will perform on April 30 on The Tonight Show and then headline the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on May 2. Also, The Cure will play WHFS/Washington DC's HFStival on May 22 with P.O.D., The Offspring and Jay-Z, amongst others. Billboard.com reports that a full North American tour may run from late July to September, but that is still being finalized."

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Jay-Z at the HFStival! Surely this means ILM has won.

adam (adam), Thursday, 22 April 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I may be repeating myself, but may I gently remind you that they will play their new single on Jay Leno in ONE WEEK!!!!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 23 April 2004 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

AAAAAAAIGH I WILL BE SCHMOOZING AT A POST-PERFORMANCE PART (oh wait I have a VCR YAY)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

do we know what the name of it is yet? Also I guess this is being released on the ArtistDirect label?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It's called "Please Join The Cure (Dan Perry)".

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

with 'Just Say Yes (VengaDan)" remix on the b-side..

This is distributed by Geffen, no title yet, as far as I know. Ooooh, the excitement!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I just found this on COF "New Album - The Cure signed a 3 record deal with I Am Recordings/Artistdirect. Artistdirect went bankrupt though, so The Cure have terminated their contract and have now signed with Geffen. The album will be released on June 21st in Europe and June 22nd in the US & Canada."

teeny (teeny), Friday, 23 April 2004 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan is suffering from wishful thinking, as the single is CLEARLY called "That Ned Fan of Ours (Is An All Right Guy)"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got it on good authority the new single is "Why the fuck? (are you all so excited)"

___ (___), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, you didn't write the new single!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, hold on a second, I think the new single is actually called "Fuck off".

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be really excited about The Cure if they let Tolhurst back in the band (on synth, not drums!) and returned to the great psychedelic pop style that they were so good at during the mid 80s.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Gier - isn't that like saying that Christmas would be exciting if you hadn't found out Santa didn't exist?

And therefore - not at all exciting?

___ (___), Friday, 23 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

From PFork:

Though fans are concerned that Robinson's harder-edged style could detract from or overdigitze the band's trademark atmospherics, The Cure's decision to hire Robinson marks a step up from their previous two albums, which were produced by longtime engineers Paul Corkett (Bloodflowers and Steve Lyon (Wild Mood Swings)-- neither of which had much experience under their belt as full-fledged producers: Corkett had previously only produced for Suede and Placebo, while Lyon had only one production credit, for The Creatures.

So what do we think of this? Overdigitize the band's atmospherics??

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, if there's one thing I'm concerned about, it's the overdigitization of atmospherics.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I fear the digital crosstalk on the amp waves.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no time to fear. I'm too busy excitedly whispering "nyom nyom nyom" to myself.

Over and over again.

Muppet Boy, Friday, 23 April 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
So what are the odds that the album cover will be as awful as for Bloodflowers?
They really did lose the plot graphically/aesthetically since Porl/Patched Art left the ship.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

uh-hoh...

From COF: "have you seen the album art yet? it's awesome, it's a crayon/water color drawing by a little kid maybe 3 or 4 years old. it looks like something that would be hanging in a kindergarten class on white lined paper, it has 4 figures (all totally different sizes and styles) on it and the heart with an eye and wings. The Cure dips across the top in black with a yellow star around the "C". Then under that is the cure written again in red marker.

I'm guessing the middle figure (which is the biggest and mostly black with scarlet alien type eyes) is Robert, with stick arms and legs."

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 17 May 2004 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm all for that!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, crew, are you ready for this?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Monday, 17 May 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh heh heh. I like it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 May 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: The Cure vs Basement Jaxx

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
And now... the lyrics!
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/ChainofFlowers/thecurelyrics.html

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 3 June 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Robert's frenzied lyrical recycling continues at speed!

"The Promise" looks somewhat rubbish in written form, but the Coachella bootlegs atest to its greatness. Hopefully the rest will follow suit.

Muppet Boy, Thursday, 3 June 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

why hasn't this leaked yet!!!!????!?

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 3 June 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Because they hate you. (They hate me too, sob.)

The last time a high profile album didn't leak almost up to the release date was Tool's Lateralus -- I think it only emerged two or three days beforehand.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 June 2004 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, this is getting strange.
As strange as the fact that the official website doesnt even mention that a new album is coming out in 3 weeks..

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

so who will see them this summer? i will be at the nyc and boston shows in july/august. BOTH on SATURDAY nights !

kephm, Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

When are they playing LA?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

August 27, with more dates possible.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 June 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

argh, i'll be gone by then..

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 3 June 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm planning on the seeing the Nashville stop, but I have to strategically time my arrival in order to completely miss Mogwai.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 3 June 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I've come to the conclusion that the new single is one of their best post-80s single, only rivalled by 'The 13th' and 'Never Enough'.
Insanely catchy driving music for a sunny day

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

do cure fans ever forget what robert smith looks like?

http://www.gulfcoastvillas.com/thecure/gallery/robert/robert1.jpg

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

if only he still looked like that

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I was gonna say, not only do I not forget, I celebrate it!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I've come to the conclusion that the new single is one of their best post-80s single, only rivalled by 'The 13th' and 'Never Enough'.

"The 13th" was one of their best singles ever, and nobody noticed it - everybody was busy listening to Oasis. Sparks meet Tijuana Brass - plus their usual craziness. GREAT.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Marco is completely OTM. People who go on and on about how everything off of _Wild Mood Swings_ is useless simply haven't paid any attention to this song.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

It was wonderfully out of nowhere, "The 13th," and I remember being very surprised and admittedly a bit puzzled by it. Then I heard "Mint Car" and thought, "OH GOD I UNDERSTAND NOW!" and have loved "The 13th" unreservedly since.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, it also took me a few bewildered listens but I soon realized hearing it on my balcony that it was the BEST SINGLE EVAH! Well up there anyway
And that's also kind of what's happening with "The End of the World"

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.premonition.fr/actu/226/226003/photo1.jpg

'Lost' is available on iTunes, so it should be circulating by now..

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't need to see that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, not while I'm eating please.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

And this is the NME review of the new album...

The Cure - The Cure (8/10)

If this really is the end for The Cure, then it's some way to go out.

The Cure have been together longer than most NME readers have been alive. Robert Smith, his hair, his lipstick, his band, his songs about claustrophobia, love, loneliness, love, huge spiders and love, they've always been there. Twenty-five years since their debut, the band's influence is all over the place, from Hot Hot Heat's fevered thrum to The Rapture's spectral dilation. But it's been close to 15 years since their last truly great album (the still stunning 'Disintegration'). Each new record comes with the veiled threat from Smith that he's about to pull the plug on this whole affair - seemingly much less veiled on this than many others. But he's been threatening that since 1982, so why worry? Because if this wilfully aggressive, powerfully dark record really is the final one, then it's a staggering way to go out. For the first time ever, Smith isn't in charge of production. Ross Robinson, who's worked with Slipknot, Korn and At The Drive-In, drove the band to near-mutiny in his search for the ultimate performance. And it shows. No easy walk through a few moments and the odd glum one for the old skool, it is startling from the first listen. Opening with the brooding dirge of 'Lost', the band are heavier, more menacing, more rhythmic than ever. Smith recalls being "so happy and so young", but admits, "I got lost in someone else", perhaps his own myth. 'Labyrinth' barely lifts the mood, its deep blue psychedelic heart carrying Smith's tortured performance. "The day is done/The house is dark/It's not the same you", he cries, his voice rising to a scream. The Cure haven't sounded this malevolent since 'Pornography' and Robinson is intent on not allowing Smith's melodic side to throw easy pop bait over the side of his sleek, black destroyer. When the classic Cure moments come - and 'Taking Off', 'Before Three' and 'The End Of The World' are up there with the best - they're still focused on moving The Cure forward if, at the same time, Smith's lyrics are as unguarded and romantic as ever ("We were so in love/In the sea of gold", "Tonight I share with you/Tonight I'm so in love with you", "I'm trying to be the one for her/Trying to be I love"). Elsewhere, 'I Don't Know What's Going On' finds Smith scat-singing his way to a falsetto chorus that's so un-Cure it's like a tiny, pointed reinvention all of its own. 'Anniversary' has a Moroder-ish disco tint and an operatic chorus. 'Alt.end' rides a riff halfway between The Cure of 1980 and U2's 'New Year's Day' as Smith celebrates this "big, bright, beautiful world" while insisting, I want this to be the end/I want this to be the last thing we do", while 'Us Or Them' (a reaction to 9/11?) is the angriest Cure track since 'Shiver and Shake'. Smith has said of this record, "If you don't like this, you don't like us," and when you give your album the same name as your band, you need to be sure you can stand by every moment. They can, and they undoubtedly will. 'The Cure' is not an easy album to love. It's oppressive and relentless at times, it never, not once, lets you off the hook without a fight. But it shows a band on the verge of a whole new future. Whether they actually want it or not a lot less clear. - Rob Fitzpatrick

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

it's been close to 15 years since their last truly great album (the still stunning 'Disintegration')

CRACKHEAD.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah WTF? _Bloodflowers_ was only 4 years ago (and even if you discount that, there's still _Wish_ from, um, 1992...).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooo-wee baby. I feel this is gonna be great. And, no, I wouldnt call BF truly great either.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The DaNed Corporation notes your alternate opinion re: Bloodflowers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Guys, be real. I like Bloodflowers and all, but it's nowhere near the high water marks set by Disintegration or Pornography.

I know. I'm out of the club now. Here's my membership card and everything.

And I *still* don't like the new single...

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

All right, so what do you think of Wish, then?

(I like how we've all agreed that Wild Mood Swings is, indeed, flawed.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Wish is meh-ilicious (though I'm warming to "Kite" or whatever that single was, years after the fact.) But then I haven't listened to it in some time.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"High"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Carey and I went to Other Music to buy tickets to the Curefest: they were $64. We abstained.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

That's actually less than I expected!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Good lord. What is up with the ticket price? It's more than Lollapalooza, it's at the same tack venue, and Morrissey will not be there (that I know of).

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

you know, Lol actually looks better than he did in Disintegration-era videos. You guys should be nice.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Will you be going, Ned?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt, nothing else in their catalogue (except sometimes _Faith_) matches the high water marks of _Pornography_ and _Disintegration_! It's like saying, "Well, Orbital is all right, but nothing they've released since has lived up to _In Sides_" or "Led Zeppelin? It was all downhill after IV" or "Prince hasn't done released anything as good as since _Sign O' The Times_ since that album".

The fact/opinion that album B isn't as good as album A has absolutely no bearing on the fact/opinion that album B could be a great album!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 June 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't say that it wasn't a solid album, Dan. Just that some folks don't think it ranks in all time great Cure albums, much less all time great albums period. Bloodflowers is a nice piece, and it got a major boost from being included in the Trilogy concerts, but it's a lesser work than 17 Seconds or Faith, though greater than Head on the Door or Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me (which didn't do much for me other than a few songs on either one.)

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 17 June 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Lesser than _Faith_, yes. Lesser than _Seventeen Seconds_? I don't know; even though there are some very great songs on that album ("Secrets" really doesn't get its due), it's really let down by too many instrumentals (plus the track order doesn't work). It doesn't hang together very well as an album.

(Conversely, _The Head On The Door_ is an album that's greater than the sum of its parts, particularly when you consider that I absolutely can't stand one of the songs on it, to the point that if they ever play "Push" live I use that as my bathroom break.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 17 June 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Will you be going, Ned?

*bows* My dear Mary, this is a bit like me asking you, "Hey, you know Morrissey's playing, right?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 June 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Different strokes for different folks, Mr. Perry.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Thursday, 17 June 2004 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Although I completely agree with Dan, re. 17secs, I'd still put it above BF, which is definitely smaller than its parts and really lacks dynamics IMO.
Neither Wish nor WMS (duh) strike me as truly great either, so Baaderoni in agreeing with NME shockah... But they should be rightfully punished for naming 'The Top' as the one to avoid at the bottom of the review.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 17 June 2004 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned: I thought so, but I just wanted to make sure that the high price wouldn't throw you off, as it did with a certain show in Anaheim earlier this year. Is there a thread for Curiosa, or could people try to convince me here how great it will be on this thread? I have this weird desire and at the same antipathy to it . . .I suppose ambivalence would be the word.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 17 June 2004 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

When it comes to the difference between those shows, it's between a multiband show where I actually do want to see three of the main bands on the bill versus one act at almost the same price. So there ya go. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 June 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cure haven't sounded this malevolent since 'Pornography' and Robinson is intent on not allowing Smith's melodic side to throw easy pop bait over the side of his sleek, black destroyer.

sweet.

tk, Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, that's officially the first time in about five years that a piece of writing in NME has actually made me excited about hearing a record. when's it out again? and on what label?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

goddamn this thing better leak soon. im getting blue balls.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the fact it still hasn't! Very cool, I tell you. At this point even if it does I think I'll just wait for release.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 June 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

what-ev-er. :b

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 17 June 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I just discovered the Cure within the past couple of months. I bought Disintegration, and it has become one of my fav records. What should I buy next? If I was to buy two more?

Gilles Meloche (Gilles Meloche), Thursday, 17 June 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Seventeen Seconds and Boys Don't Cry. But that's just my opinion.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 17 June 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Pornography then Faith then 17 Seconds.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Tickets on sale for the LA date this weekend but I am waiting on the strong rumors of Irvine Meadows dates, which makes more sense for myself and fellow attendees. We are patient.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 June 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I would buy the Join The Dots box set and Pornography.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 June 2004 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait there's a question. Uh...well, Dan's answer is pretty sound. I might suggest Faith over Pornography, but both records have the salutory effect of seeming exact opposites of each other while still clearly both being the Cure and recorded one year after another.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 June 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The correct answer is Staring At The Sea: The Singles. If you like that, I'd wait a couple months for the remasters to start coming out and then pick up Boys Don't Cry and Pornography.

Oh, and Lol is looking a lot better than Bob usually is these days. Somehow they made him look not-terrible for the "TEOTW" video, but Leno? And the Conan appearance last year? He's downright ghoulish, and not in the good way, wink wink.

Sansai, Friday, 18 June 2004 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Pretty good interview: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/ChainofFlowers/focusknack04.html

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 18 June 2004 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

holy wow, that is the best interview i've read in a spell. i had no idea he had to do the HP commercial in order to release the box set.

kephm, Friday, 18 June 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Great, great interview indeed. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 June 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Lets get back to arguing about the albums! :P

I loved 'Wish' but I think it it was the start of their 'artistic demise' because Robert Smith subsequently tried to create another 'balanced' album of happy/sad songs(without much success) in WMS. The best Cure albums work as a cohesive whole (and I am including The Head on the Door in that), which I am not sure Wish does, even though taken song by song I like it alot. The same can be said in varying degrees for WMS and Bloodflowers (which i don't think 'works' very well when taken in one listen).

<Whispers> (I still don't like that new single much. Is it a grower, tho?)

Ok, Flame me guys!

flowersdie (flowersdie), Friday, 18 June 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not going to flame you because I'm not entirely convinced by the new single, either. I don't hate it, but every other new song I've heard (aka 3) is millions of times better.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 18 June 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope so, because I really like the idea of the Cure still having a good album in them.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Friday, 18 June 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Just got and listened to the studio version of "Lost" for the second time. It really kicks in right good, I can tell why they wanted to do these songs live, but I wish they'd been able to find a compromise between this and, say, the sorta-overcooked-but-effectively-atmospheric Bloodflowers, because the generic production and guitar sounds are still as big a minus as on "TEOTW".

Sansai, Friday, 18 June 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, the official cure website's been completely revamped. Pretty nice...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Saturday, 19 June 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Well THAT took long enough. Lemme go see.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 June 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Happy dancing blue foot guy! Flying purple hearts!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 June 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

But aside from that, a notable reduction in content, and the 'privacy policy' indicates to me that this is now a record company site than a band one per se. Hmph.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 June 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I can only assume that more content will be added.
Did you see Craig of COF's review of the album? I'm starting to get worried...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Saturday, 19 June 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

That I haven't seen yet. *goes off to read*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 June 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen worse! I definitely want to hear all these 'extra' tracks, of course. And even more in the vault? Oh darn.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 June 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

For American souls -- the Japanese release has fourteen of the fifteen songs coming out:

http://idealcopy.american-data.net/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=IC&Product_Code=MU-CURE-THECU-04&AFFIL=chain

The vinyl has one song more yet -- in comparison the American release has only 11 songs on it. That makes sense.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 June 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

This is really outrageous.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Saturday, 19 June 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, they've GOT to start putting together tracks for _Join the Dots II_, yeah? ;-) Yes, obnoxious, but I have enough discs to sell back for credit or spare that I'll be able to balance out buying the import in this case, and just download the one remaining song.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 June 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean the Japandes import? How much are these things going for these days? I might as well invest the cash in a turntable and get the deluxe vinyl!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Saturday, 19 June 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The link I provided lists a price of $30 before any shipping. Whee!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 June 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought "Going Nowhere" was just relegated to hidden track status on the US. They got rid of it completely? Gah!

Sansai, Saturday, 19 June 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Well that I don't know, maybe it is a hidden track. But if you look at the breakdown here:

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/ChainofFlowers/newalbum.html

You can see what's where in what versions -- officially listed at least. (The one track on the vinyl and not anywhere else is "This Morning.")

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 June 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Just D/Led the studio version of 'Lost' and it doesn't sound like anything the Cure have done before. It's great. Very Sonic Youth-ish guitar tunings.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Sunday, 20 June 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmm, good. :-) (I'll probably like it more than the actual Sonic Youth stuff this year.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 June 2004 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

WHY EMULE?!?!?!? WHY MUST ALL YOUR COPIES OF GOING NOWHERE TURN OUT TO BE THE FIRST COUPLE MINMIUTES OF THE END OF THE WORLD WHY WHY WHY HAFDAFDSAJFLAJFLAJSFGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!1

Sansai, Monday, 21 June 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm finally getting the leak, gradually. Anyone else?

"(I Don't Know What's Going) On" = 5.6
Labyrinths = 4.8
Before Three = 6.9

1 and 3 sound like really tired Head On The Door songs, 2 is an unbearably dull "Wailing Wall"-ish arabian rave-up.

Sansai, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, tonight will be trip no.1 to my local record store that usually sells albums early. Oh yes!!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

ANYONE ELSE???

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I gave in to temptation by downloading 'Lost' but from now on, I'll patiently wait to have the crispy-creamy CD in my hands.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

VH1.com's streaming the whole album currently. I just started listening (still on "Lost").

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for the tip!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

OH. MY. GOD.

Guess where I'm going after Ally's radio show?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

To the after-party!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Sort of surprised at how much I like this so far. Both Labyrinth and Before Three are great GREAT!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The End of the World is still a drag.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.vh1.com/artists/az/cure/762177/album.jhtml

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Taking Off sounds just like something from Kiss Me.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

goodness robert has a pottymouth on this one.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

p.s. I think this might be really good, I can't wait to hear it in a proper release on the headphones.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure what bitrate it's streaming at, but it sounds surprisingly clear through headphones.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, just looked. That's the best 32kbps stream I've ever heard ever.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, i'm full of shit and i'm listening to the vh1 stream right now. Check out those drums on Labyrinth! And the vocals could be straight out of 'All I Wanna Do Is Kill Her'!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm on my second go-round now. Before Three is great GREAT GREAT.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got and listened to all the American version about twice now. "Lost" is fantastic once I got past my reservations about the production, just incredibly powerful, and "Anniversary" is really good. The rest is all mediocre rave-ups (though I'm sure Ned and Dan will freak over "The Promise", it's basically "The Kiss" + "Watching Me Fall") and decent MOR pop, like the less flamboyant parts of Wild Mood Swings. The vocals are almost all-yelping-all-the-time, kind of irritating on the prettier songs ("Taking Off", "Before Three"). I've still got my fingers crossed for "Going Nowhere", though.

Sansai, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

alt.end rips the chord progression from "In Your House"

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Naming songs after keyboard commands C/D?

Dud.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmmh not sure about 'Us or Them'...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

You're right, this is exactly the In Your House melody.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

with the lyrics of Play For Today...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i will just wait for the album, as i always do, still not too worked up over it.

kephm, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

drums on never = drums on hanging garden

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Never is great. Love the breaks with the claps

There's something about the vocals, really reminiscent of his 80s singing style.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay 20 seconds in and I AM IN LOVE.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD

"Lost" is seriously one of the best songs they've EVER RECORDED!!!!!!!!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Judging from "Labyrinth" and "End Of The World", I think my big complaint about this album is going to be about how the instrumental music is muted compared tot he vocals.

That aside, WOW. It's like _Wild Mood Swings_ never happened (so far).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

(BTW Either exposure has mellowed me to "The End Of The World" or it does actually make sense in the context of the album. Also I think my mixing fears are due to the audio stream.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah I have serious fears about the mix but will wait until I hear the real deal to judge.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll patiently wait to have the crispy-creamy CD in my hands.

Same here. At this point it's like opening up the Xmas present a couple of days early. I R patient.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

VH1 can eat a bag of greasy dicks for their suckass buggy Media Player embed. (Although on the plus side I've now listened to "Lost" about five times and IT IS FUCKING GENIUS.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

OH MY GOD The clarity on the MTV site is about 8 bajillion times better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm halfway done downloading it!!!!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I got it, hit me up!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

in 320!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh-hoh, it seems that Curiosa is in trouble...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

What have you heard?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 24 June 2004 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Not much, DeRogatis hinting that Curiosa could be having the same problems as Lollapalooza: http://www.suntimes.com/output/entertainment/cst-ftr-lolla23.html

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 07:19 (twenty-one years ago)

OH NO

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 June 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

So that means the Cure just shrug and redo things with an only-them tour later leading to 3 hour sets HURRAH!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Sweet sweet Lordy Lord. I am now the proud owner of The Cure!!!!!!!!!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice. Which of the eight million editions in particular?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Euro De-luxe, sir. I couldn't be bothered waiting for the Hong Kong super-enhanced version. I'll just complete it with the single(s)

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

The folks at Ideal Copy are selling the Japanese starting on Monday, I'm going for that one, 14 tracks. Does the HK one have even more, then?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Clear Channel's Gelman agreed with this dire prognosis. "Whether it's the $3 gallons of gas or the tired artists or the bands coming around for the second or third time, it all hit the fan at the same time," he said

haha $3 gallons of gas gets mentioned but not ticket prices.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

no no just joking on that one! Hmm maybe I shd have waited. Oh well, whatever.
Nice to see that more money has been spent on the packaging this time around than on BF.

xpost

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

no no just joking on that one! Hmm maybe I shd have waited. Oh well, whatever.

Eh, in the age of downloading it doesn't mean all that much I suppose but hey. I just like knowing I have all but one track from the whole thing on the disc!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I know. I'm not really into re-compiling albums with odds and ends on mp3...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG

Okay, I know I go through a ridiculous hyperbole phase every time The Cure releases something but SERIOUSLY "Lost" is one of the twenty best tracks they've ever done and possibly one of the ten best.

Imagine a Cure album made up of opening tracks:

10:15 Saturday Night/Jumping Someone Else's Train
A Reflection
The Holy Hour
100 Years
Let's Go To Bed
Shake Dog Shake
Inbetween Days
The Kiss
Plainsong
Open
Want
Out Of This World
Lost

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a recording of the Coachella gig and Lost does indeed sound like a great tune, look forward very much to hearing the album/cd/whatever you call them these days.

mzui, Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Imagine a Cure album made up of opening tracks:

What a HORRIBLE album. I couldn't even imagining creating a CDR of that to listen to or anything!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG AN ENDING TRACK ALBUM!!!!

Three Imaginary Boys
Seventeen Seconds
Faith
Pornography
The Lovecats
The Top
Sinking
Fight
Untitled
End
Bare
Bloodflowers
The Promise/Nothing Left/(insert fave tracklisting here)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 June 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Opening track album: "Welcome to my world, it's a bit intoxicating in its own way but I do have my moments."

Ending track album: "OH GOD THE PIT THE YAWNING PIT, DESPAIR AND EMPTINESS STRUGGLE AGAINST THE VOID oh wait dancing cats neat! DOOOOOOOM."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned OTM. I'll give it up for the back-to-my-thirties rage in some of the vocal performances, but, that's about all the blood Ross got. Lots of Bloodfowers rehashes.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

A TRACK FOUR ALBUM!

= "I'm feeling sorta queasy."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yea, well......I'm still waiting for the proposed 15 cd box set of all the european radio sourced concerts from the 1980/81 tours.

Oh wait, that's in my head...

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Thursday, 24 June 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still trying to figure out what you think Ned is OTM about, Chris; it seems like you're talking about completely different things.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 June 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he's talking about my takes on the first/last song albums.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, so his second sentence (which seems to be about _The Cure_ itself) has nothing to do with the first one?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 June 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

This is where we enter the realms of authorial mystery.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 June 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan's opening tracks comp >>>>> closing tracks comp

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 24 June 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

BTW Smith apparently reckons the 12-track version of The Cure is the real one and the others are just annoyingly short or inconveniently padded

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 25 June 2004 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I've listened to it once and half and I have to say that I'm inclined to agree with the 'best album since Disintegration' hype. They managed to come up with something really dynamic and urgent, something that was missing IMO in their last three albums. It's varied but doesn't feel forced like WMS, pretty close in spirit to Head on the Door.
Most fan reviews I'd read so far complained about the poppy middle part, but apart from 'alt.end' these are probably my favorite songs so far (esp. 'I don't know what's going on').
I have a feeling VengaDan is gonna be in rapture over 'Us or Them' which condenses 'Watching Me Fall' into 4 minutes of pure rocking goodness.
And the closer 'Going Nowhere' could possibly be my favorite Cure song since 'Homesick' (to which it is pretty similar).

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 25 June 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

From personal experience, I can say the average Cure fan is pretty annoying - more interested in mirroring his "tortured" inner self in the songs than actually listening to the music.
The new album is good, really, I listened to it twice and I'm pretty satisfied. A couple of songs are genuinely great and most of the remaining ones are good too. As Dan wrote, _Lost_ is just amazing.
Again, I don't think it's possible ask for more to a band with a 25-year long career.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Friday, 25 June 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably better to continue this here:
The Cure 'The Cure': Intial thoughts, C/D?
