looking again at the pazz & jop 2003 singles list makes me think we'll never have another summer like last summer - "crazy in love", "rock your body", "ignition", "danger! high voltage", "house of jealous lovers", "beautiful", "pass that dutch", etc. last fall wasn't bad either what with "milkshake" AND "get low".

here are some more prospective summer anthems (these will be my anthems, anyway):

- yung wun "tear it up" ... is the fucking business
- young gunz "friday night" ... probably not, they annoy too many people
- busta rhymes etc. "shorty" ... woulda happened by now, i guess

here's theory #2:

- nina sky "move ya body" ... myke is on point, they're twins!!
- beenie man "dude" ... because it's got the hook.
- elephant man ft youngbloodz "jook gal" ... because of the "i'm sean paul from the home of the strip club" verse

maybe it will be dancehall summer!! a new dancehall wednesday night just started a couple minutes from my house. ihopefully it takes off.

people say "dancehall breaks through this year" every year since forever. you could even probably argue that it has already, really, or as much as you could expect it to.

OTOH, this year feels different somehow. i'm not tracking the amt of dancehall videos per hour on each of the music video networks but maybe somebody should. it seems very very high right now.

some of these are a bit old perhaps but they're still going to be my summer 04 anthems. they are just songs that feel quite summery to me now but the beauty of this whole thing is that a song comes along, usually from out of nowhere, and becomes the defining feel good hit of the summer. i like that surprise element.

Nah it's Baby Cham, definitely the other great cut on that riddim (in fact probably a better cut, it just lacks Ms Dude's great off-key chorus). I can't come up with an explanation for what "Vitamin S" is that isn't disgusting BTW. Fuck his voice sounds so great on it though - almost as good as "Wha Dat Fah"!

1) rock solid 4/4 speed garage garage
2) insane snaking is-it-a-guitar-or-a-303? riff
3) sexy vocals (more go-go's than madonna or elastica, but some of each)
4) oh yeah, the vocal hook is really catchy, too
5) booming prog-house bottom end

there's already remixes out. the original mix starts out with two minutes of cut-up trackiness before getting into the verse-chorus-verse bit so i can imagine any remixes that go trackier will be totally storming.

it's a great track. sort of, i dunno, like "international snootleg" meets the jacques lu cont mix of "silver screen shower scene". maybe a little housier than that, even. i'm blown away. it makes we want to get sweatbands and a boombox and do aerobics in the street.

siegbran you are half right!! that shapeshifters track IS astounding, and i can imagine it slotting right into the AVH mix. it's very cryadmoure, isn't it? and the mash-up potential for "lola's theme" is huge - i want to hear g-unit rapping over it and shit this summer!

the thing is it's probably too, um, tracky to go over as an anthem stateside. i know it's not really tracky but it doesn't have a vocal. then again, neither did "la rock 01", but that was sort of a surprise to everyone i think. i'm trying to think if there's ever been a filter disco track (not by daft punk) that's been a minor crossover anthem here in the states

This article talks about how there wasn't really a consensus summer anthem in 2004 -- which I'll agree with -- but the details and examples are kind of baffling.

First, the article claims that the summer anthem of 2003 was clearly "In Da Club" -- I dunno, I thought "In Da Club" peaked a little early; I would've said "Crazy in Love."

Then, the candidates it offers for this year are Lil Flip's "Sunshine," Terror Squad's "Lean Back," and Juvenile's "Slow Motion." Obviously, all three of those songs got mad airplay, but "Lean Back" is the only one that seems anthem-worthy. And why not also mention "I Like That" and "Move Ya Body"? (I was hoping "Move Ya Body" would be the summer anthem, but apparently it didn't take off nationwide.)

Anyway, your thoughts? Now that the summer's almost gone.

Yeah, that article's wrong--Summer '03 was clearly owned by Beyonce. For all of June and July, you had like a one in two chance of finding "Crazy in Love" on the radio at any single point in time (and then same for "Baby Boy" in August). "In Da Club" peaked too early.

The most obvious song of the summer of '04 would've been "Yeah!," but it was released a couple months too early (and neither of the follow-ups are exactly summer anthem types). The omnipresence of "Lean Back" on the radio didn't really hit until late August, so that's out, same goes for "Sunshine". "Slow Motion" isn't nearly banging or anthemic enough, "I Like Dat" was really only a minor hit, and "Move Your Body" never hit that level of over-saturation.

The article is right about that, there was no summer anthem to match 2003.

no honestly I think it's just become really massive, judging by Glastonbury, and there are so so so many breaks bootlegs of classics, all of which are nasty and close to hard house type stuff.

And I wouldn't say it was crap just for being "the new trance" or something, it's just terrible, so much of it is entirely lacking any groove whatsoever, just a massive break ruining any chance of you wanting to dance to the record, which sounds ridiculous but is actually the case, the actual breakbeats are what's ruining the breakbeat records! The new Evil Nine record is quite good and I still can have a laugh at a Plump DJs show but other than that.......brrr

What a shitty year for it's been for pop music. I can't believe there hasn't been a truly massive summer song. Closest thing I can think of was "Yeah" (Usher, not LCD Soundsystem), but that song sucks.

Does anybody know where I can find out what really were the biggest hits of the last four months? Any Billboard chart databases out there? There's gotta be a better candidate for summer song of the year than fuckin' "Yeah."
