at least one website lists a July 19th release date

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

omg 1000 new posts by june

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

=0

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

July, that's not nearly enough time to build up the proper about of hype, WTF.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm already tired of it. Anything else new?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 13 May 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

nice one JoB !
have we had a Lady Sovereign thread yet? I still haven't heard Medasyn et al's "The Battle"
biggup Casual, but how bout some distribution and pressings, eh?

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 13 May 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Medasyn stuff is quite good but Lady Sovereign is plainly the best of hte lot. The other rappers in her crew are really really amateurish - i heard a live set and they kept on having to ask the DJ to start the track again because they lost their momentum.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 13 May 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

a reason to live

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 May 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Matador releasing it concurrently this time? Or is this just XL again?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

haha yeah like any of us are actually gonna "buy" it

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 May 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe considering how much press i've given the little rat faced fuck over the last 18 months XL might see fit to SEND ME A FUCKING PROMO COPY

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 13 May 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey I bought the Matador reissue (NEW even)! (Admittedly long long after I had already downloaded most of it.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 13 May 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

ha - I did actually buy it
but more to the point, sold hundreds of them (on import)

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

grime profiteer!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

that'd be almost as many as Reynolds, Finney, Harvell, etc!

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hm?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

well I'm sure there was overlap, see?

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

No i don't understand your comment. I am dense.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Rascal crit-share vs retail outlets piechart

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah. Sadly I imagine Petridish etc. have more influence than us at the end of the day.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

well you have only yourself to blame for The Avalanches !

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

now there's an overdue follow-up

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 14 May 2004 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually would you believe I got hyped to Since I Left You from The Face a couple of months prior to its release date. People who dismiss the mag as being fashion obsessed overlook how OTM it frequently was. They even had a spotlight on Lenky in late '01!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 14 May 2004 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick Logan strikes again!

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 14 May 2004 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i think if i actually want to get on the label's good sides i should wait to promote albums and singles until they're actually commercially available in this country.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 May 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

how boring

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 14 May 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

That said Strongo, if you start hyping it up now Pitchfork will only get it half wrong in July - the labels should respect that.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 14 May 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR, ****, CHANGED MY LIFE AND MY TRASHCAN LINER -- Jess Harvell

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 14 May 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"THE GRIMEY TRIBUTE TO PIZZA SHILLING ANIMATRONIC BEARS WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR...TAKE A BITE OUT OF GRIME...*****" - Tex Schramm Jr., Dallas Morning-Observer.

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 14 May 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i expect casual records will get bugger all done like island blue before it

prima fassy (mwah), Friday, 14 May 2004 08:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"the beauty stab of grime. buy other records please. better still, buy no records. do something more useful with your lives. don't rely on me. i can't. this needed to be the mr bailey, grocer, of grime, except read." - m carlin, n maja.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 14 May 2004 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

This appears to have been put together so quickly I'm a bit worried it'll be a disappointment - considering BIDC took years to come together.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 14 May 2004 09:18 (twenty-two years ago)

he wants to be careful he doesn't become The Coral of grime.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 14 May 2004 09:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Every time I see this thread "Showdown" by Britney Spears pops into my head.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 14 May 2004 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

where's the faith matt.

boy in da corner had a rushed feel to me.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 14 May 2004 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

is it his live album?

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 14 May 2004 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh i'd assumed BIDC was actually produced within a month or two at the most - i don't consider it 'rushed' tho because part of the point of Dizzee and Eskidance is that 'to the point/one take is all we need' mentality

stevem (blueski), Friday, 14 May 2004 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

the cd tells you when stuff was done, &c. i can't be bothered to look but it was all done nov02-mar-03 or something like that.

ENRQ (Enrique), Friday, 14 May 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

is this improv then? dizzee rascal live at the klinker? i've never seen him there. was prevost on drums?

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 14 May 2004 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"People who dismiss the mag as being fashion obsessed overlook how OTM it frequently was. They even had a spotlight on Lenky in late '01! "

OTM

don (don), Friday, 14 May 2004 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Every time I see this thread "Showdown" by Britney Spears pops into my head.

I keep reading it as "Showtune" which opens up a whole 'nother world of options

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 14 May 2004 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

haha take a bite out of grime
nice one

robin (robin), Sunday, 16 May 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the title worries me a bit.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 16 May 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"Showtime" is as dark and complex as underground dizzee fans might have hoped for. from one listen, it's slightly more tempered that "Boy In ..." with the highs and lows slightly less extreme, but still unique and powerfull nonetheless.

martin (martin), Monday, 17 May 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't see why it should mark.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

it seems a little cable channel is all.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 17 May 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the title reminds me of "Beetlejuice"

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 17 May 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

New release date: 9 August.

JoB (JoB), Monday, 24 May 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought the interview in spin was surprisingly good for what it was.

(and no, i'm not just saying that because my grime top 10 is published as its sidebar.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

What was your grime top ten? Please don't make me buy Spin, Jess.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless you get royalties or something.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

haha! actually, you can't even flip through it in the store, because they've bagged this issue with a stupid rock cd!

anyway, it was more of a "grime primer" than my own personal top 10.

1. "21 seconds"
2. "oi"
3. "pulse x"
4. "ice rink"
5. "boys luv girls"
6. "hyperdrive"/"fresh air"
7. "ain't a game"
8. "birds in da sky"
9. "thuggish ruggish"
10. "bounce"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

(i just checked and its not online either. oh well.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(though i do have to admit i am rather proud of talking about danny weed and target in spin of all places.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

21 SECONDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????

martin (martin), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

perhaps you're familiar with the phrase "progression of a genre". also "mass market magazine".

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, would have been better if i had chosen "they don't know"? or "up middle finger"?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"Dilemma" was proto-grime, but if you're using a top 10 to recommend a genre i would have drawn attention to 21 Seconds above all others...

martin (martin), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

"wouldn't have" even...

martin (martin), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Both 'Dilemma' and 'They Don't Know' were closer blueprints of the sound itself, but I think there's a fair case to be made for '21 Seconds' being the tune that begat grime, simply because it was so overground... you know, it's got its place.

Jason J, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

if '21 Seconds' had anything even approaching a decent bassline then i would be prepared to go along with this idea

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

'Oh No' was a minor hit with a much better menace to it (tho still kinda lacking in that dept for me, certainly compared to Dizzee et al)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

grime doesn't = "menace" though

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i mean us rap didn't exactly just start out with criminal minded...are we supposed to ignore "rapper's delight" because it's not "the message" or "death mix"?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, artists would have been nice

Me-- Do you have the song 'Oi'
HMV--...

Spin Reader (Enrique), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Platinum 45 ft. More Fire Crew "Oi"

martin (martin), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

jess did you get a byline?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

weird, i flipped through spin for the first time in yonks the other day and it actually looked, you know, decent. i base this assessment strictly on the artists they chose to feature. granted, none of the yyys, streets or dizzee are exactly bleeding edge anymore but at least they weren't all over ac newman's jock. or the flipping killers'.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i am hoping for a simon reynolds/blog wuv song.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
"Charisma" is pretty insane - that rhythm! It's like one of Timbaland's eastern grooves meets "Grindin". Much more minimal than I'd expected - but then I think this is just a random track from the album and if I'd heard "Cut 'Em Off" first off I would have thought the same.

The chorus just grows and grows on me: "'I'm here! There! Everywhere! I can't be seen! I'm all over, know wha I mean!"

His flow here is to "Fix Up Look Sharp" as "Pass That Dutch" is to "Work It". Which doesn't sound like a compliment but I don't mean it as a put-down at any rate.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 17 June 2004 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
what's with the stuff i found on slsk last night - instrumentals credited to Dizzee by the names of 'Logan's Hoe' and 'Wheel' - the latter sounds good ('91 Howlett sounds in effect) but they could be fake i guess

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got 'wheel' and one more, whose title I cannot recall right now.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

does your wheel have vocals?

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

no, instrumental.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

logans hoe is this dude called logan's remix of a hoe. and theres a logans wheel too
see this thread

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

cheers

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 1 July 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I have "wheel" and "hoe", both instrumentals.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 1 July 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't there also a track called Go?...I have some white label from a while back with Hoe on one side and Go on the other. Wasn't cetain if it was Dizzee or not, but they're not bad tracks (not amazing either though). Both instrumental versions as well.

Graeme (Graeme), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah go/hoe is a series, i think theres 4, + 1000000000000000 bootlegs. they are mostly the same with tiny differences

the best version of 'hoe' is dizzees 'strings' (not really a version but sort of), which ive already gone on and on about around here.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 1 July 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
so what do we think of "stand up tall"? all i have is the 1xtra radio rip, but it's really grown on me. repost yr nylpm comments if you wish.

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 16 July 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i love this track. it's so going to be album of the year. i hope. you can hear more tracks here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra/tracklistings/semtex/semtextracks.shtml

although i haven't done so, as yet (i've only heard charisma and the others previously played on 1xtra).

toby (tsg20), Friday, 16 July 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

album now out sept 6th - Stand Up Tall is classic, like igloo pitched down a few octaves and properly beefed up. love all those £10 casio strings in the top of the mix. Crap lyric about nothing, but completely hypnotic. The flip Give You More is very I Luv U, though D Double's timing is a bit whack.

soc, Friday, 16 July 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Full track listing...

Showtime
Stand Up Tall
Everywhere
Graftin'
Learn
Hype Talk
Face
Respect Me
Get By
Knock, Knock
Dream
Girls
Imagine
Flyin'
Fickle

about 3/4 is excellent, including an inspired remake of captian sensible's Happy Talk, complete with tuneless Dizzee singing

soc, Thursday, 22 July 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

is stand up tall the youngstar tune. seems a bit regressive.

scg, Thursday, 22 July 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

what do you think it sounds like?

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 22 July 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't get me wrong, i really like it. After all there never were many vocal versions of those old Musical Mob tunes released. I'm just not sure where it fits in with the new direction the vocal dubs are taking, sampling "House of the Rising Son" and Dipset songs an all that.

scg, Thursday, 22 July 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone got the album?

thesplooge (thesplooge), Thursday, 22 July 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup. Production is no great leap away from 'Boy In Da Corner' - All that stuff about 'Dizzee is working with US producers' seems to have been so much hot air. There's some great lyrics on it though: "I'm 5'10", chocolate skin/ I'll punch you in your nostril, I'll punch you in your shin" is this record's "I'm old skool like Happy Shopper/ I fight old-skool bring your bat bring your chopper". 'Dream' is the Captain Sensible 'cover'. And there's a track called 'Girls' which is just... weird.

Jason J, Thursday, 22 July 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

including an inspired remake of captian sensible's Happy Talk, complete with tuneless Dizzee singing

!!!!!

Am I right in expecting this record to be much more pop than BITC?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 22 July 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Umm... no, not really.

Jason J, Thursday, 22 July 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

What's so weird about "Girls", just out of curiosity? Also, are there many joyously manic moments, like the third verse of "Jus a Rascal"?

Simon H., Thursday, 22 July 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll have to listen to it again to really tell you but there's another guy on there - says here he's called Marga Man - who raps in a quite strained high pitch.

Jason J, Thursday, 22 July 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd say the production is a lot chunkier and the sound fuller - the mix down is much tigher - a result of more cash/better engineering skills, possibly. i wouldn't say its poppier, but there is a more melodic sensibility in the detailing, in the sense that your ears grab on to the tracks much quicker than BITC

soc, Thursday, 22 July 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno i expected a solid screenful of !s and :0s

i'm disappointed already

Lukas (lukas), Thursday, 22 July 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Marga Man is pretty heavy - Dizzee associate, was/is on the Semtex thing, too.

From what I've heard this is a hiphop album. Is "Rah Rah Rah" not on it, or is that called something else. like that one.

Would it have hurt to let D Double have an actual VERSE on Give U More?????

broken witch, Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

and what about ARMS HOUSE????

broken twig, Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

And then there's this...

Mercury man Dizzee rascal who has just completed his transatlantic tour with Mike Skinner and has been telling the press about his strip club visits. The first single is off his new album, 'Showtime' (out in September), is called ‘Stand Up Tall’ and the promo was filmed in Magic City, in a strip club in the States by the same producer behind the 'Fix Up, Look Sharp' video. Naughty (sorry Dizzee) Rascal claims the strip-joint setting was the director's idea: "I didn't argue with him, I was just there enjoying the scenery - so good. But the video, if anyone has seen that Ludacris video, that tune, I did it in that club. It's in Atlanta, the strip club capital of the world. You know the wildest, loudest clubs in the world."

broken twig, Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Save some of your !s and :0s for the Tinchy album. or Creeper 1-out in three weeks.

broken twig, Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

and what about ARMS HOUSE????

This is now Learn

soc, Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

and i'm guessing Rah, Rah Rah is Hype Talk - all Plaid clicky laptop beats

soc, Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

just got this in todays post. cant wait to hear it.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

put it up on slsk! plz!

Also a shiny penny to anyone who can identify the old Dizzee track on Deja that samples 2pac's "Run Tha Streetz":

I don't wine and dine/but I bump and grind/take you from behind *ahem* *ahem*

big.

broken twig, Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

haha. when dizzee went to a strip club in miami he fell asleep! he was curled up on a couch the whole night and his friends had to carry him to the limo once they were done getting their lap dances. 'ardkore!

it really is the grime 'room on fire' huh

prima fassy (mwah), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

hahahahaha!

broken twig, Friday, 23 July 2004 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm seeing him tonight!

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't think of a single reason why i wouldn't want the grime 'room on fire'.

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

If you mean "the grime 'Room On Fire'" to mean "more of the same, not that that's in any way a problem" then yes, I suppose it is.

Jason J, Friday, 23 July 2004 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

when dizzee went to a strip club in miami he fell asleep! he was curled up on a couch the whole night

Awwwwww! Dizzee is so cute.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 23 July 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i want the grime "Larks' Tongues In Aspic"

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 23 July 2004 09:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought this would be dizzees in utero since he seems to like that album.

thesplooge (thesplooge), Friday, 23 July 2004 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Weirdly, I think the second half of the record is much stronger than the first, particularly the triple-bill of 'Dream' (the Captain Sensible one)), 'Girls' ("too much gash, no time to rest") and 'Imagine'. Maybe a bit more of the great stuff should have been shuffled towards the top end.

Jason J, Friday, 23 July 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

also: LEAK THIS please!!

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 23 July 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I just came back from Dizzee Rascal and am farfin pissed, no other substances on offer, I know this is of no critical merit.

mentalist (mentalist), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

on first listen it's pretty great; i'm not sure about the backing vocals on "get by", though. i need to give it quite a few more listens before it sinks in properly, though. it's good to see all those old "so much gash no time to rest" lyrics finally surfacing, too. "imagine" is pretty gorgeous, or perhaps cheesy.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

is no-one else listening to this? is there another thread i haven't noticed?

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i've had trouble finding it on slsk, like most things, bah

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Simon H., Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

new album leak alert thread

although i discovered it the old-fashioned way (viz i got up this morning and my slsk wishlist showed me it had leaked).

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

four songs in so far and it's terrific (all i had time to hear on the way to work, and my co-workers probabaly aren't too conducive to Dizzee so I'll have to wait 'til lunch for more).

matthew james (matthew james), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha Wiley "Thru The Wire" freestyle! Forgot how good this beat was..

scg, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Man Showtime sounds wicked alread!! I can tell after the first song that it's already a hundred times better than BIDC. It's not 'hip-hop' whatsoever.

scg, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

'gotta keep quiet, living on a diet mash potato and stew'

scg, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hype Talk" is my favourite so far, it's quite bouncy and happy but scary and breezy. "Respect Me" is that really popular flute beat from earlier in the year. I've gotta go to bed now so Yanky crew stand up tall.

scg, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Respect Me is Wonder's "What?

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

this isnt hitting me like BIDC. its well rounded, yes, but its not jabbing my ears as much as i like dizzee to with his beats. plus, the songs arent as focused it seems.

splooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the album's richness.. there's nothing of the incredible verbiage fucking you hard in the face as before, but it tickles into your ear and hurts your soul...

matthew james (matthew james), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

but the songs just seem random, theres none of the lyrical focus of the first album (ive only heard it twice so far though).

splooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

what focus is there you find there is on Boy in the Corner that isn't on this? I'm still on my first listen so it's not imprinted on my yet but i think he's got a slighter way with words here. Which is always a difficult one.. he was always undercut by a constant implication of morbid sensitivity which he never stated outright. he still frames it as an attack, like on the beggining of 'imagine' but that first line has so many options, it's one of those beautiful lies, adressing it agressively to some unstated "you" when he's obviously asking it of himself.

Boy in the Corner was like an Ideas album, each song was completely unto itself and wrapped in its own internal logic. There's more of that second album syndrome on the first - this one he's in full flow, drifting away from the individual conciets of that album and into some rarefied state of mind that's produced this ioncredible, flowing, cohesive record.

I just finished listening to it and put it on straight again.

matthew james (matthew james), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, so a really effortlessly great album then, every bit as good as Boy in Da Corner.

I quite like the Roll Deep tape too, but I'm fine with hearing Wiley over the "Tipsy" beat.

not as mind blowing as BITC, but still high class.
there is no sign of americanization, as people suggested earlier.
the beats are just weird. dunno what other music jurnos gonna call it. from first listenning you gotta learn that:
- dizzee goes too much to chinese fast food (the anoying eastern sample, which he already used)
- he namecheckes Jay Z at least twice!! and once he uses DMX-like chorus. woah, he should have never gone to USA!

karl76, Wednesday, 4 August 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

After living with it for a week or two, I really like it. There's some moments of filler, true, but where it works, it's just great. Right now, 'Hype Talk' is my favourite.

I like "Knock Knock".

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

He might not have done a complete 180 with his beats or anything, but I think this one's way more musically satisfying than BIDC..."Stand Up Tall" is tremendous, "Everywhere," "Hype Talk" and "Respect" are definite standouts, "Get By" is really affecting, and "Dream" is positively irresistible. Only listened to it through once, and it's already top 10 for me.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The irony of Strongo of all people not being able to get this is fucking KILLING ME.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Superficial internet download wanker first impressions:

Can't touch BITC. Track for track, I'd take the first album almost every time. It had bigger tunes. This one is all murmuring low end basslines that don't really hit you in the gut.

But there are some nice beats fucked up in a new way on there. He's still a great MC, even if he's rapping about fame now. It's still a very good album--only 3 duds I'd say.

just saying, Wednesday, 4 August 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Got this late last night off indietorrents (thanks for pointing the way to Simon H). Loving it so far...it's more cohesive and polished than Boy in The Corner (even if it has lost some of the immediacy). There's more of a sublow / Croyden techno sound than I would've expected (although in retrospect, the white labels he's been doing were pointing this way). Nothing is hitting as hard as the standouts from Boy in The Corner as of yet, but so far for me the repeats are 'Hype Talk' and 'Flyin'...oh, and 'Dream' put a big stupid smile on my face on the subway this morning.

Graeme (Graeme), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

" sublow / Croyden techno sound"

eh? Sublow (Jon E Cash's sound) and the Croydon sound have very little in common bar roots in the darker end of garage.

"although in retrospect, the white labels he's been doing were pointing this way"

what white labels? most of the "Dizzee" tracks on white are bootlegs by other people. i dont think there's been a dizzee white since the original "Hoe/Go"!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i dont think there's been a dizzee white since the original "Hoe/Go"!

There've been a bunch of variations and versions...'String Hoe', 'Wheel' / 'Logan's Hoe', 'Champion Hoe' ...I haven't heard them all, but the ones from earlier this year were starting to take on a lot of the sounds (bass, kicks, snares and hats) used by Jon E Cash / Mark One / Plasticman. Dizzee and Wiley's stuff is simpler and more stripped down (as befits tracks that are only half-there without MCing). But stuff like 'Hype Talk' sits better next to the Merc riddim than, say, Kano's 'Chosen One'.

Graeme (Graeme), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Chosen One is by Target ft Riko.

Those whites weren't releases by Dizzee they were bootleg refixes by other people in the scene (usually unknowns with Soundforge ie "Logan's Hoe" is a Hoe refix by DJ Logan, Rinse DJ/Roll Deep affilliate). you cant attribute any of dizzee's sonic development to them.

i very much doubt that Dizzee is "taking on sounds" from Jon E Cash or Mark One either. his camp doesnt tend to watch other people very much, hence the massive leap "BITC" was...

Yeah, my bad. Thinking Riko, typed Kano...

Those whites weren't releases by Dizzee they were bootleg refixes by other people in the scene (usually unknowns with Soundforge ie "Logan's Hoe" is a Hoe refix by DJ Logan, Rinse DJ/Roll Deep affilliate).

Didn't know that...picked up two of the whites a few months back via Juno or Rhythm Division (Hoe/Go and Wheel/Logan's Hoe if memory serves) and figured both were Dizzee/Wiley as (hand)labeled.

i very much doubt that Dizzee is "taking on sounds" from Jon E Cash or Mark One either. his camp doesnt tend to watch other people very much

Well, you don't have to be monitoring what others are doing for similar production techniques / sounds to develop in tandem.

Point I was making is that several of the tracks on Showtime have a polished, dark, heavy bass + click / twitch sound that is more resonant with sublow than older Dizzee/Wiley/Roll Deep.

(x-post)

Graeme (Graeme), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i dont get your distinction between "sublow" and older dizzee/roll deep.

"sublow" is just the term Jon E Cash coined for his take on what most people refer to in general as grime ie Roll Deep et al.

jon e cash's sublow is not particuarly detailed either nor clicky. older wiley, by contrast, had lots of odd glitches and bird noises etc.

i was wondering this, seeing as like, a bunch of big tunes appeared on the wiley album, like big riddims done by other producers (er cant remember which ones, im sure theres one). but anyway, seeing as dizzee's got wonder's "what" on it, whats the deal with that? how idd they sort it out. im sure producers dont mind everyone riding their irddims on dubplate etc, but when it gets released worldwide, surely they are gonna want some sort of credit/royalties? do they see any money?
if greim gets more and more overground, isnt this an issue that could get big? martin? how does it work?

or was wonder just like, "yeah put it on the album, whatever"

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i dont get your distinction between "sublow" and older dizzee/roll deep

Bearing in mind that definitions of electronic music genres / sub-genres are as nebulous, ill-defined and contentious as genres themselves and are only useful as shorthand for finding what you want in a record store (and further bearing in mind that I have no idea what "most people refer to in general as grime" being that I know roughly four other (non-ilm) people in NYC that have even heard of grime)...here's what I'm thinking of when I hear / read the terms "dubstep" "grime", "sublow"...

Dubstep: Producer / DJ driven (El-B, Horsepower, Jay Da Flex). Dark, bass-heavy, vocal-less 2step (hence "dubstep"). Dance music that swings (in terms of both feel and quantize settings).

Subow / Croydon techno: Producer / DJ driven (Jon E Cash, Mark One, Plasticman). Listening music. Sounds ok without an MC. More bass (hence 'sublow'). Less emphasis on danceability. Little swing (or no swing). More layers / tracks used in production --> (sounds like) more attention paid when making tracks + emphasis by people involved on 'the music' --> (sounds like) it takes itself more 'seriously' (hence the techno part : ) ).

Grime: Producer / DJ plus MC / MC crew driven (Dizzee, Wiley, Roll Deep, More Fire, Doogz, etc). Listening music and communicating lyrics. Incomplete without an MC. Lo-fi production (often just a beat and bass riff with some FX / random sounds). Few tracks + 8-bar structure + emphasis by people involved on the MC --> (sounds like) less attention paid when making tracks --> musical component taken less seriously --> music is open to a wider range of musical / sonic influences.

I'd distinguish between older Dizzee/Wiley/Roll Deep and Jon E Cash/Mark One/Plasticman by saying that the grime stuff is (generally) grittier sounding / lo-fi, simpler in terms of structure and production technique, prone to using jokey throwaway sounds (bird noises, ringtones, computer game samples) but also more likely to surprise you with what ends up in the mix. The sublow stuff seems more constrained by expectations, but also more consistent, polished and technically accomplished. Needless to say, doing one doesn't mean you can't do the other (Jon E Cash and Slimzee to thread).

Graeme (Graeme), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

>Subow / Croydon techno: Producer / DJ driven (Jon E Cash, Mark One, Plasticman). Listening music. Sounds ok without an MC. More bass (hence 'sublow'). Less emphasis on danceability. Graeme: on the above point, you're making up your own genres as and when you feel like it, crashing through the genre's sonics, affiliations and boundaries. Once you're inside garage there is NO link between Jon E Cash and Mark One/Plasticman.

(and I assume you mean "sublow," though "Sub-Bow" is a pretty fair comment about Sublow.)

Jon E Cash calling it the "Croydon sound" is ridiculous. Jon E Cash is from WEST London, Mark One from MANCHESTER and Plasticman from NEAR Croydon. It sounds minor, but London is intensely tribal.

The key difference is that Mark One & Plasticman's sound, and Jon E Cash's too, in garage terms, is dissernably different from dubstep aka what everyone agrees is the "Croydon" sound. that's Horsepower, Hatcha, Digital Mystikz and all the others I mentioned in the "cutting edge in 2004" thread. Jon E Cash sees himself and wants to be very much part of the MC-lead grime camp, he'd be horrified if you called him "Croydon."

And this is the way the scene's arranged *itself*, not how people have labeled it either...

martin (martin), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

In fact, it's a Lil Wyte song, "Players In Da Atmosphere".

scg, Wednesday, 4 August 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Once you're inside garage there is NO link between Jon E Cash and Mark
One/Plasticman.

Fair enough, although distinctions based on affiliation / boundries are only
possible if you are intimate with (or at least proximate to) the scene. It's the sonic
differences alone that a remote audience has to focus on.

I'm not even sure where I picked up the term "Croydon techno"...but it
seemed fit the dubstep minus 2step elements sound quite nicely (irrespective of
geography). I promise never to use it again for fear of horrifying Jon E
Cash :)

Graeme (Graeme), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

martin clark setting it straight...

you know 'bout Face innit. cousin of Kaish? or am I barking up the wrong tree?

"Fair enough, although distinctions based on affiliation / boundries are only possible if you are intimate with (or at least proximate to) the scene. It's the sonic differences alone that a remote audience has to focus on."

i see where you're coming from on this one (erm NYC? :) ) but i've learned to take the position that the scene should dictate the names/affilliations/cliques/groupings itself not have them imposed from outside.

i took this position from watching other journalists try and invent genres ( *ahem* "Disco-hop" *ahem* ) and seeing it backfire.

that said, i still think there are sonic distinctions between Mark One/Plasticman on one hand and Jon E Cash on the other, that don't require proximity to London to hear. (Jon E Cash's atonal basslines, dry scuzzy sounds, funkless rhythms, interest in miami-bass style "bitch/hoe" vocal samples for example)

martin (martin), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"no i think "Face" refers to a public rep not a member of so solid... "

I know that - but I thought it might have had a rather explicit double meaning. "you're barking up the wrong tree, the spotlight's on me"

"i'm 5 ten slim, chocolate skin, i'll punch you in your nostrils i'll punch you in your shin, but i aint mad, im a lovely lad. i'll give you the loveliest beatin that you ever had"

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 5 August 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i've learned to take the position that the scene should dictate the names/affilliations/cliques/groupings itself not have them imposed from outside

Fair point. I used to have a tape of Grooverider's old Kiss FM show where he got very upset about music journalists referring to what was yet to be widely known as drum+bass as 'intelligent jungle.'

Graeme (Graeme), Thursday, 5 August 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

the people talking about track #s > 15 were talking about something else - a creeper mixtape, which is apparently "gash", which is apparently a bad thing.

Lukas (lukas), Thursday, 5 August 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"gash" in this case taken to mean "lukewarm freestyles over Spring 2004 MTV Raps buzz tracks".

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 5 August 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it when Dizzee says "It ain't all TEA CUPS...I swear to you it's gritty out here!

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 6 August 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah the creeper mixtape is disappointing.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 6 August 2004 05:20 (twenty-one years ago)

do he say that he's been "doing this since the tamagotch"? (after rhyming it with "cotch"?) i like that. "graftin" is hot.

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 6 August 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I was frightened this was going to be a bloated 18 track thing. I guess I didn't read carefully enough to pick apart the gash from the rascal. I have only managed to download the first half of the album, but its not a bad way to go. It takes me a while to soak up dizzee due to the foreigness of it. I have only just recently been able to hear any other grime.

murder dog interview

scg, Friday, 6 August 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"It was a mad, confusing time for me. UGK, I didn’t listen to them from young. I first listened to them when this happened to me (lifts his shirt and shows scar from stab wound). First time I come here, LA I bought their greatest hits. And I felt ill. I got stabbed and I took myself out in 2 days on some 2 Pac shit. I couldn’t stay in hospital and I was riding around on my bike and everything and I think that made me a bit ill. I was in my room, crazy, up and down I was waking up at mad times. I was stabbed about 5 times, so my body was going mad, and I was listening to my album and I was listening to UGK stuff. And that got me through. That really got me through. It was enlightening to me. Maybe because I had never heard nothing like that before. Country rap music. That’s some real shit I was listening to there. And I was just listening to it over and over and over. I remembered them from Big Pimpin’ innit"

scg, Friday, 6 August 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

that's a pretty great interview. dizz loves him some bun b.

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone upthread mentioned that "Dream" is like, totally, the most brilliant thing ever???

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

You should here the scg slowed & thoed in da SE15 version it's much better. The original is way too fast and high pitched.

that's a good interview. he's so right about peedi crakk too, that really would be amazing, apposite

prima fassy (mwah), Sunday, 8 August 2004 06:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone upthread mentioned that "Dream" is like, totally, the most brilliant thing ever???

Kind of. But it bears repeating. His actual singing along with the "dream come twuuuue" bit is so deliciously out of tune...

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Sunday, 8 August 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, this record is a lot better than I would have guessed.

"Dream" is my favorite by far, though. It's just mindblowingly great. They are out of their minds if "Dream" isn't a single.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 8 August 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a possibility that I missed it upthread somewhere, but does anyone know where the sung hook from "Dream" is from? Or is it written especially for this song? I'd really like to know.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 8 August 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

‘Dream’ is a re-make of Captain Sensible’s 1982 chart hit ‘Happy Talk’,

Ah, nevermind.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 8 August 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Dizzee makes a pun at the start by saying 'this is too sensible for me' or somesuch

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 8 August 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a possibility that I missed it upthread somewhere, but does anyone know where the sung hook from "Dream" is from?

It's from the song "Happy Talk", from the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical South Pacific.

abegrand, Sunday, 8 August 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, the South Pacific thing explains why it sounded so incredibly familiar, thanks.

Keith McD, Monday, 9 August 2004 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone commented on the brilliance of Fickle yet? I haven't listened to the full record yet but that track is inestimably great.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 9 August 2004 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"BORE STRAIGHT THROUGH!!!!"

martin (martin), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The way those rhythm hits drop in all chaotically in "Knock Knock", whilst listening very loudly very drunkenly, are some of the most effective (in terms of involuntary physical reaction) rhythmic stabs ever. It wouldn't work though if the rhythm of his flow on that piece wasn't so impeccable.

So yeah this album fucks me up about 10x more each time I hear it, I'm kinda getting obsessive to the point of bugging my friends. Right now my favs are "Stand Up Tall", "Hype Talk", "Knock Knock", "Face", "Fickle", and "Dream". And the one about girls is a fucking HOOT.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

That one is called "Girls".

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha NO FUCKING WAY

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, and "Imagine" is also pretty friggin brilliant, although a bit disarmingly emo.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 9 August 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah "Fickle" samples Lil Wyte/Three 6 Mafia!!!

two weeks pass...
i still think "respect me" sounds a lot like tricky circa 97.

I haven't heard "Respect Me" yet but "Graftin'" sounds like it fell off of _Pre-Millenium Tension_.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 August 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"Girls" is currently the greatest song in the history of all recorded music.

SEX?!?! WE DON'T SETTLE FOR LESS!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 30 August 2004 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha has he reused his old rap about gash and no time to rest and "straight to the ting"? I've always loved/felt squeamish about that.

(sadly i've yet to hear anything from Showtime)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 30 August 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I've snagged the mp3s and will be giving a listen tonight, rah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 August 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes he has reused that rap Tim! It is killer-diller!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 30 August 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Except I don't think it has the "straight to the ting" in it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 30 August 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Nickalicious if you can look for the live set he did with Slimzee DJing *ages* ago (late 02? Early 03?). Really minimal post-"Pulse X" beats and yards 'n' yards of rhymes like that (and indeed including that).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 30 August 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

(Tim, I'll tell ya again, if you send me your slsk handle assuming you have one...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 August 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

(Ned as I said in other thread I can't download really - but thanks for the offer)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 30 August 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah got it. No worries! I should burn you a disc or something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 August 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

oh the irony! Nah I'm sure it'll be released here soon. The debut came out pretty sharpish.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 30 August 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim, I've put one track up on shoelaces if you want it

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 30 August 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha you must be from the UK

djdee2005, Thursday, 2 September 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

is there anyway dizzee could find himself on us urban radio stations? being on matador probably makes it unlikely, but otherwise how weird would it be to hear "Stand Up Tall" sandwiched between like R Kelly and Terror Squad? I will test this using itunes and my imagination.

artdamages (artdamages), Thursday, 2 September 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds PERFECT next to Nina Sky "Move Your Body", fwiw.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 2 September 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Dizzee was on Power 106 in LA! (Power 106 = biggest hip-hop station in town) Felli Fel interviewed him, played his track, Dizzee freestyled over some shit. I didn't know about this until I heard a Dizzee station id out of fucking nowhere. The mp3 is floating around on slsk, it's 15 minutes or so.

Lukas (lukas), Thursday, 2 September 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

NIIIICE. There needs to be more of that. And indeed the album is pretty damn grand, he's finally living up to all that's being claimed for him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 September 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel obliged to point out that this was a while ago, and the track was Fix Up.

Lukas (lukas), Thursday, 2 September 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone else find Marga Man really anoying on the Girls track. Dizzee sounds great but Marga sounds super gay. quote "It's Amaaazing" damn way to spoil a track

discoraaa, Sunday, 12 September 2004 06:32 (twenty-one years ago)

yep. he ruins some classic lines

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 12 September 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Album in at number 8 on UK album chart.

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 12 September 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Marga Man is totally kick-ass on that track! His vocal timbre kinda reminds me of a really young, coked-up Bootsy Collins.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Dizzee charting below Kasabian = I hate this country.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine's got a dvd with it!

gaz (gaz), Monday, 13 September 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah mine too - although I had most of the videos from the BITC singles (which I got for review purposes - I'm not that obsessive).

Speaking of which GRRRRR Beat got a review copy several weeks ago and gave it to SOMEBODY ELSE. Fuck that man, I put "I Luv U" on mix-cds for so many of those other fucken people.

The sarky Godhead DJ Simon Mayo refused to play any tracks from Showtime on his Radio 2 Album Chart show yesterday.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

why's that?

Dead Man, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

he should have played 'dream' obv

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

He said it was "inappropriate" for Radio 2.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

that must be true of loads of albums though -- or does he do this to lots of records?

Dead Man, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

He's played things like Kanye West, Lloyd Banks and 50 Cent - not to mention the Streets - with sweary words bleeped out so I can't quite fathom what problem he has with DR.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Knowing that Dizzee even has a cooler real name than him has really gotten to him.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Which one is "Fickle" again?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Fickle" is the one that sounds like a sped-up Kanye beat grafted onto a Playmate's navel.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Heheh, I actually know which one you're talking about from that description!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

margaman is the worst MC ive heard in years. horrible in fact.

splooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

does anybdy hav dizzee acapellas?

peter $.., Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

ARGH I tried to get an acapella of "Stand Up Tall" last night on 5L5K and walked away for a sec and came back and it was all "TRANSER ERROR" or whatever and I couldn't locate dude again.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I can see how Marga Man's vocal timbre might make him a bit of an acquired taste. I personally fucking LOVE "Girls" though.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

GIRLS is great, its marga that just ruins it. as RWD mag said, it would have been better if dizzee brought through some stronger MCs from the grime fraternity rather than marga.

splooge (thesplooge), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

...and the thread died

Is there a single? What will get him on hiphop radio? My money is on "Flyin"

Does "Stand Up Tall" sample pigeon noises from Ghost Dog or is that just an effect?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 September 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

also, am i just imagining something of an old-school feel to this? is it just a sample or two?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"Stand Up Tall" is the single. It's supposedly getting some play.

The song that has really grown on me the most over the incubation period between my dl'ing it and buying it = "Learn". If I were to edit a music-related dictionary, under "SICKER THAN FUCK", it would say 'see: Dizzee Rascal "Learn"'.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, both of those are. i actually think 'learn' would be more likely to get radio play, but what do i know.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'M A LOVELY LAD, I'LL GIVE YOU THE LOVELIEST BEATING YOU EVER HAD

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

as long as gabbneb does not somehow compare this to Ani DiFranco, I approve of this thread revival.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

also, am i just imagining something of an old-school feel to this? is it just a sample or two?

I agree. I think it's the drum sounds, but I found myself thinking that if I had heard instrumental versions of a couple tracks they could have easily been from 1985.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 23 September 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

as long as gabbneb does not somehow compare this to Ani DiFranco

no, but I'll call "Stand Up Tall" a Beasties track

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 September 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 27 September 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

'alms-house', perhaps?

(as in home for the needy, erected by private benefactors)

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 27 September 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

So for someone who bought the first album and liked it but didn't love it (Dizzee's wordplay was impressive in a purely technical way, the fact that he did all his own beats pleased my inner auteurist/rockist, and the synth sounds were pleasantly meaty, though perhaps a bit too stiff for my taste (they remind me of Autechre, whom I've never really "gotten" the taste for), some of the songs resonated emotionally (e.g. "I Luv You" and "Jezebel") but many of the others kind of left me cold, and overall the album is too long and monotonous), is there reason to hope that I'd like this new one better?

o. nate (onate), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

No.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes (I find it much warmer and more fluid and less frantic and [tenatitively] way way way more consistently listenable/less punishing [in that I don't just zoom in on a handful of individual tracks like last time] although I concur that the yellow of BITC was more delicious sleevewise)

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

There are some more conventional sounding hip-hop beats thrown in to break up the atonal Dizzee beats (which I don't like as much as on BitC, maybe because they sound better when they're low-end and squelchy like on that record), if that helps.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not looking for "conventional sounding hip-hop beats" - I'm just looking for something with a little more bounce and swing in it. Alex in Doncaster's post gives me some reason for hope in that regard.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

You need some Cash Money.

adam. (nordicskilla), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Could we have a video clip for "Dream" with lots of little kiddies from the ghetto, please please please???

No, because that wouldn't be nearly as insane as tiny Dizzee starring beside ghetto puppets in an update of Watch With Mother. It starts with two rows of building blocks which turn over to read DIZZEE RASCAL, and a grandmotherly figure playing on a piano, then she turns to the camera and says: "Shall we see what Dizzee's doing today? He _is_ a rascal." Then the jack in the box on the table opens, and Dizzee clambers out (he doesn't pop for anyone:) and starts complaining about too sensible etc. The rest of the video is just him and puppets (with really obvious strings), and it's mental. The only real problem is that they keep cutting back to the lady who'se got an air of "I don't want to do this but it's my job" in her smile, and it's like we get it, he's terrifying to old white women, well done.

I love the terrified old white woman!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I was about to say, I saw that more as a 'who IS this person?' look rather than some sort of further subtext.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, she introduces him at the start!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, more in the show host 'I am going to pretend I know everything about this person' way, and then gets flummoxed like whenever Madonna curses out Letterman.

from www.nme.com:

BECK'S JUST A RASCAL

DIZZEE RASCAL has been working with BECK and has remixed 'HELL YEAH', a new track from the singer set for future single release.

The rapper is about to head out on his first major tour of the UK and told NME.COM: "I’ve just finished a remix for Beck – it’s a song called 'Hell, Yeah' and I’m very excited about that. It happened easily - he asked and naturally I said yes. He’s a credible artist, a real artist so I’m happy about that."

The Mercury Music Prize winning star said he had not yet been introduced to Beck but he was planning on meeting him at the final of the Shortlist Awards.

Rascal is one of three British acts nominated for the prize, alongside Franz Ferdinand and The Streets, for his debut album 'Boy In Da Corner'.

The awards ceremony will be held at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles in mid November.

Dizzee Rascal releases his new single 'Dream' on November 8.

NME.COM understands that Beck will release his new album in February – the follow-up to 2002’s 'Sea Change'. 'Hell, Yeah' is set to be the second single from the album. The LP was produced by Beck and The Dust Brothers.

three months pass...
Anyone know who Dizzee's touring with this spring? He's coming to Dallas on 4/11, but there's no information about supporting acts yet.

I'm hoping/praying XL gets MIA to support him on the tour, I can't think of any other acts that make sense (the Streets are too big now and on a different label, Wiley doesn't have enough presence in the US or a new album)

I would say that *might* be him, but it's not an official myspace music profile...
