I think Alastair just possesses a lot of traits I'm attracted to, and he's got the whole alpha male thing going on. And of course he runs marathons so clearly keeps himself in shape. He's a spiffy UK writer who has now settled in America, though I suspect you'd have many things to say about his take on gender and rock and roll in the book he cowrote with his wife, The Sex Revolts. His earlier book Blissed Out is one of the two most crucial books that made me really want to write about music (the other is Chuck Eddy's Stairway to Hell), Generation Ecstasy is also pretty grand, and Geeta is helping him on a book about post-punk. To be fair, I am seeing this through my own take on what I've called 'the ILX hothouse,' mixed with what Tim identified on another thread (wish I could remember which, it's a fantastic post I will poorly paraphrase here) as the differences between social and individual listening, and their respective purposes. As a construct, this board, for better or worse, forces and/or assumes a certain be-in-touch-with-all-NOW-or-else attitude -- IF taken as a whole, though, I'll admit. Viewing everything as competing subcultures of interest -- and that includes 'pop'/top 40 as broadly defined, which is the biggest subculture of all but is still a subculture -- is probably more accurate. It's not the biggest worry of my day -- a year or so back for a while there it was, though -- but it is still a nag, a sense of 'if you don't pay attention, why do you bother?' which similarly carries over into the related sphere of pitching stories or coming up with ideas for reviews or all that. Similarly I've sensed that in everything from getting ready to start contacting agents (apparently one tactic strongly recommended is to suggest what other recent successful works your own can be compared to and to thus demonstrate knowledge of what is au courant -- but I barely read recent fiction, I prefer nonfiction!) to what Tep elsewhere identified as a (I probably have the wrong word) mistrust of those who simply don't watch TV. Ultimately I don't think modern cultural commentary (or contribution) requires absolute immersion -- or the pretense that it is possible.

It's true: the more I look at the photos, the more he looks like Jim O'Rourke.

Reynolds has never been a very distinctive writer. His sense of humor is somewhere between nonexistent (more often than not) and just plain forced-and-awkward. Or maybe I mistake his hysterical whining for an attempt at "humor". I mean, this is the guy who complained about the existence of Cud years after their dust evaporated from the bargain bins. Why get so whiny about THAT so many years after the fact? Before he was whining about so much to listen to, he was recently whining about "nosatalgia for boredom". Gimme a break. Perhaps if you unplugged the damn stereo, cable tee vee, and internet, then perhaps stopped riding the record company promo gravy train you wouldn't have so much bountiful excess to whine about, eh?

Here's the patented Reynolds trajectory in a nutshell:

1. Praise, hype, go overboard making lofty proclamations about some half-assed no-mark band or DJ or other. (Throwing Muses as "ultimate" rock & roll band, anyone?)

2. Ride with the hype for all it's worth.

3. Whine about it.

4. Whine some more.

5. DENOUNCE!

6. Invent new pseudo sub-sub-sub-genre. Begin cycle anew. (Yawn...)

grimey simey seems to be hankering for things to return to how they were as far as big (rock) acts everyone knows about that tower over the popular music world with everything else tiny fledglings in comparison. understandable - who doesnt like music that resonates widely (i cant talk about a lot of music i like with ppl outside the net cos its all niche stuff), but doesnt all that contradict his PHUTURRRRRRRE/forward obsession?

is it such a bad thing that theres more specialist coverage of music more than ever - makes a change from the old way of doing things which was basically rock critics writing about everything even if they didnt really know all that much about it?

i don't think so; he's actually talked about how *many* acts there were (on major labels) in the early '70s compared with now.

when the hypest album of the year is dubstep, a genre that's been going on basically unnoticed by anyone outside the scene for a good half-decade, something is wrong, and i thing reynolds is good on why and how.

Besides, Public Enemy hardly bestrode Planet Pop like a colossus in 1988 in quite the same way as a Pistols or Stones did they? You could probably make a better case for NWA occupying that position. And from a British perspective, I'd say the last bands to dominate the cultural landscape in that way were the Spice Girls or Oasis (no matter what you may think of either's merits), but they are not bands who fit into Simon's particular cultural niche so he conveniently ignores them.

Simon's piece makes sense. Invariably I agree more with his published pieces where he moderates his polemics with a bit of fact and accuracy, than with the nose-tweaking blog posts where all I can sense is that my nose has been tweaked.

I like "Buttons" a lot but I'm not sure how innovative forward thinking it is when its just a rewrite of Beyonce's "Naughty Girl (Remix)." I guess you might say that kind of Truth Hurts' "Addictive" type of thing "up-to-date," though.

to return to this, it reminds me of something P Sherburne said a while back about the future of electronic music lying in it using its now fully developed language of production tricks to create emotionally moving music, rather than pushing the envelope (as it was now fully pushed, so to speak...)
