Why don't people use their real names on ILM?

Sara Sherr, Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Shakey Mo is a traditional family name.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Sara, I have just sent 100 pizzas to your house.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

My parents are bastards.

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Oops,

I could be John Ashcroft for all you know. Thanks for the pizzas, I was hungry. Now you're under arrest.

Sara Sherr, Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"jody" is my SLAVE NAME

That's okay, the boxes are empty!

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"stockholm cindy" is swahili for "self-hating jew"

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I did for a year and a half plus but got inspired to change it less than a week ago. My real name's in my e-mail address though.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't use my real name on any internet boards. There are certain things about me I'd rather people wouldn't be able to find out about by doing a Google search, or what have you.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

For a lot of people here it's probably just another linguistic game.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Sara!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Ramona Africa, I'd know you anywhere!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

people keep using my real name, dammit.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I've posted places under other names but I always feel cowardly for doing so. I prefer to be held accountable for my "low life opinions" as Pavement would say. But that's just the writer in me.

Sara Sherr, Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

And besides, anyone who wanted to stalk me would get bored real quick.

Sara Sherr, Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

One day you're going to regret saying that. And having your real name attached to it.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

what are you wearing, Sara?

*heavy breathing*

Stalker, Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

My most ardent stalkers usually don't have internet connections. In fact, they don't have most of their teeth or indoor plumbing. But they always have plenty of booze.

Trust me, Sara Sherr is Hebrew for boring.

jw (allocryptic), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I've used an alias on ILM all of 2 or 3 times, and I ALWAYS felt guilty about it. I don't like tricking people. It makes me feel bad. But that's just me.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Ramona Africa, I'd know you anywhere!

*incomprehensibly distorted cursing through megaphone*

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, thanks for the search results showing that I used it once in reference to myself.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Forgot the italics.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i forgot my original password so i had to start fresh, spelling it differently

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Trust me, Sara Sherr is Hebrew for boring.
No, it's Yiddish for "Sara the scissor person".
Similarly, my name means "Barry the well [as in, where you draw water] person", that is, IF I REALLY AM WHO I CLAIM TO BE.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I posted on here for a long time using my real name, but then I got a couple e-mails from people who Googled me and found my postings on here. And even though I know this is a totally public forum, there's still things I have said on here that are just meant to contribute to ILE or ILM conversations about specific subjects (the time I am thinking of specifically was on a thread about anti-depressents... I am not ashamed that I take them, but I still don't know that I want my feelings about them so Google-able to everyone -- future bosses, ex-girlfriends, etc., you know?)
Anyways, now I just post with my name spelled backwards!

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, I'm a bad Jew. I know that Sara means princess, but didn't know what Sherr was all about. So I'm a Scissor Princess?

Sara Sherr, Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't constantly switch screen names. (Okay, I have switched in the past, but by ILM standards, I've been fairly conservative about it.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

my name means 'lion of god', but you have to use two different languages.

actually, my full name = god's savior lion

(it almost makes me wish I was religious)

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Sara. I hope it's okay for me to say hello to you here when you are using your real name and I am not.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Sara -- if you have siblings then you are also a Scissor Sister ... har har

Considering I have a link to ILM from my own website (which uses my real name) then google-proofing my name here wouldn't accomplish much. Of course, I could choose to not use my real name on my website. Then I wouldn't be able to post a CV, work details, etc. The other option is to keep work and personal interest separate (on different websites perhaps), but what fun would that be?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, yeah, but he's the lion of salsa.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

so that's the REAL chuck eddy?

lovebug starski, Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, Chuck Eddy is one of the few people on ILM who uses his real name.

Rocket Scientist, the real question is, am I allowed to talk to you off of ILM, using your real name?

By the way, I think I waited on Ramona Africa at work. She was buying a War album. No lie. What made me think it was her? The dreads, the burns on her arms, which I tried not to stare at for very long to appear rude. She was very nice though, and shorter than I imagined, which means closer to my midget height of 5'1".

Sara Sherr, Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

the real question is, am I allowed to talk to you off of ILM, using your real name

:(

Sorry I disappeared so abruptly, but I had been waiting to pee for a long time. I should have just asked you to wait, but I wasn't thinking clearly because. . . (see first sentence).

*

And tonight is a good example of why I am "talking" online rather than with a real person somewhere. I was exhausted when I got out of work today. I was thinking of having food delivered, but I didn't, partly because I just didn't want to have to deal with another person. I've became a lot more of a confirmed introvert over the last few years.

My phone is ringing, but I will not get it.

If I sit here typing, no one has to see me or hear me or smell me or anything.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Rocket, I was joking. I wasn't offended when you interrupted our conversation to heed nature's call. (The nerve!)

Anyone with jobs working with the public can get burned out on interpersonal communication very easily.

I'll see ya the next time I forget to pay my DSL bill ;)

Sara Sherr, Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What Does Your Name Mean?

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex is indeed my real name, and I do indeed live in NYC.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 24 June 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Sara, yeah, those people who come into the library to use the internet can be really draining (present virtual company excepted, of course).

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaron is indeed my real name, and H. Z. are indeed my middle and last initials, respectively.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, if you don't get that my posting name is actually a witty pun/pop culture reference, I don't know if we can hang.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I use a real body part!

peepee (peepee), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

"Nah, Chuck Eddy is one of the few people on ILM who uses his real name."
No kidding! Guess my joke was kinda lame...
I thought inventing a name for yrself was part of the fun? Anyway, there seem to be various Marks posting on ILM/ILE so I appropriated the name of an old school DJ/rapper. LBS always stuck in my mind because it sounds so silly. Not to mention funkyfreshstupidfly.

lovebug starski, Friday, 25 June 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

because fuck you. 1-2-3-4!

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Lovebug, am i the only person on ILM who doesn't know who you are? You said on some thread that you wrote a book, I might actually buy it if I knew who you were.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually know who el sabor is. He is world wrestling federation icon Chief Jay Strongbow.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually currently live in Oak Park, but I mean, really, that's close enough. I can still see Chicago, right ... there. In fact, I may go there right now to see Richard Thompson. He's a really good guitarist, you know.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

because everyone i like on ilx knows my real name already.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 25 June 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry I didn't get your joke Lovebug. And I'm also someone who doesn't know who you are.

Sara Sherr, Friday, 25 June 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

My name loosely translates to "follower of Death"

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 25 June 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike's real, Salmo's a trout. I like fish, and it's been my pseudonym for +/-10 years. I like to be able to say what's on my mind and not have to worry about what a future or present employer might find Googling for my name. Then again, if you did your homework it would be pretty easy to match the two. It's Messmore by the way. There. I said it. It's kind of dull, generates a lot of jokes in the 1st-3rd grade, and is always misspelled. It's a nice enough name, but I like Salmo better.

Plus I know a couple other people in the US with my real name and nobody with my pseudonym. Also if I ever was credited on an album it would be under the name "Mike Salmo".

Mike Salmo (salmo), Friday, 25 June 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I use my real name. My e-mail is a life-long nickname. Now ya know.

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 25 June 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I probably should use a pseudonym. I mean, my real name rhymes with "Pukas."

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 25 June 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I just picked my alias pretty much at random as soon as I started logging on here. My real name is Alex R_____

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 25 June 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

rocket scientist: if you were a real one, you'd know that im the half of plain parade that lives closer to the MOVE bombing site.

also, sara had a lot of pizza last weekend, courtesy of my parents who own a pizzeria. she's still probably full.

i like to use my real name because it takes up a whole column in the city paper. but im thinking of chickfactoring it to maria plainparade.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 25 June 2004 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

because everyone i like on ilx knows my real name already.

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 25 June 2004 07:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I am probably better known by this name than my own.

___ (___), Friday, 25 June 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

One day you're going to regret saying that. And having your real name attached to it.

true. esp. if you rant like i do, just for the sake of ranting.
my opinions have changed since many posts too. i've learnt to hold back on the 'net the hard way. i've pissed people off in a small country. i've been disingenuous. growing down in public. i've got a few regrets.

another thing, once you start using a single id in some forum, the "community" side of things encourages continuity (or in this case _here_ it _did_ more so a few years ago)

george gosset (gegoss), Friday, 25 June 2004 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't trying to be coy about my real name, I just thought anonymity was fun to play around with. Though it does seem like the real names of most ILM regulars are common knowledge, despite their tags. When something I wrote got quoted on a Beach Boys thread a while back -- unfavorably -- I was tempted to rise to my own defense, but didn't. Frankly I didn't think anybody cared (sniff sniff snuffle)

people need to stand by their posts. or delete them. wait, you all can't do that.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 25 June 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I use my real name cos it means I have to (or should) really think about what I say, and can be held to it.

A few times I've used an alias, like 5 posts total, but it was just for comedy value.

I see why ppl have aliases for fun or just cos it's an opportunity to be creative with yr identity.

mei (mei), Friday, 25 June 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Friday, 25 June 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish my parents owned a pizzeria.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 25 June 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

yo, ease up. it was 2AM when i wrote that. i cant be held accountable for anything i write when its waaay past my bedtime, real name or not. :)

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 25 June 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It's okay, I think we are all just fooling around.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Friday, 25 June 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I think only one person on ILX knows my real name, and in fact if I ever decide to submit some sort of record review anywhere, I'll go under my friendster moniker just for kicks.

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 25 June 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

my name, age, rank, serial number and social security number are all locked away in a safe-deposit box, far away from the insecure, privacy-invading world of the internet. but all opinions expressed, and facts checked, are quite real.

what i don't get is people who are using pseudonyms already, who then use other pseudonyms for controversial/catty/calum-like posts. protecting your real identity is something i understand. protecting your fake identity is a bit strange if you ask me.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 25 June 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always used my real name here.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Friday, 25 June 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always used my real name partly because I'm too lazy to start using a fake one. Plus, back when I used to contribute to a bunch of MST3K boards I went strictly by the name "epicharmus" and it got to be really weird having people in real life call me "eppy." And there's no way I can compete with JBR's and Miccio's facility for weaving up totally fucking awesome names. Plus I can do a search for my posts really easily by using "Daddino."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 25 June 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I started using my real name because I forgot the random 'hilarious' name I had used when I first registered. I have too many internet names already anyway and need to start reigning them in. Of course, then all the stupid things I say might start following me around...

Graeme (Graeme), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's because when I first posted here, I had no idea I'd ever take to the board and become a "member of the community." I used a nickname (it's a modification of my initials: JMC) because I figured it didn't matter who I was. And then, once I became immersed, I just didn't like the idea of changing my name. Probably because I felt like people barely knew me as it was.

John Cunningham a/k/a jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 25 June 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

It's very simple. I don't want my employers to be able to do a web search and see where I spend my time at work. ;-)

ok back to tthe thread then. I got gmail and decided to make up a name. I was trying to think of something incredibly stupid because thats usually how I post. I do occasionally regret using my real name even though I google proofed it ever so slightly. The one time I did use a psydonym (i kant spell) it was an embarrassing thread I started on ile about a bizarre accidental sexual excursion gone completely wrong and then someone used my name anyway because I didn't log out. If anyone I know ever googles that I might be horribly embarrassed.

First I was Donkey Dick. Then I was Party Pants. Yesterday I was Captain Cookie. Also, I pee in sinks.

Blood Bubble, Saturday, 26 June 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Is your name Joe Paone by any chance? He would write something like that. Funny!

Sara Sherr, Saturday, 26 June 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Declaring my non-mandible status is far more important to me than the nebulous idea of "being honest and open". I AM NOT A MANDIBLE!

I am not a mandible (Barima), Saturday, 26 June 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm also investigating ILX for a an unnamed government agency that must not be named and isn't a mandible either.

I am not a mandible (Barima), Saturday, 26 June 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Just for you, Blood Bubble: Everyone pees in the sink, non?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 11 March 2007 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

Hey Bimble, I just don't think it's gonna happen any time soon :(

If you think of NuLX as a Mad Max-esque post-acopalyptic wasteland it doesn't seem so bad.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 11 March 2007 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

Damn right, soldier.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 11 March 2007 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

No, "noose" is correct.

I used my real name for quite a while and didn't worry about it because there were a lot of Rodn*y Gr**n*s ahead of me in the google listings and stopped when I realised that wasn't true anymore.

The Reverend, Sunday, 11 March 2007 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

i'm considering using my real name, too.

Cameron Octigan, Sunday, 11 March 2007 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

I use 90% of my real name

jonperson, Monday, 12 March 2007 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

Real names, you say.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 12 March 2007 00:40 (nineteen years ago)

My mother would be very angry with me if she Googled my name and saw my profane ILX posts. Therefore, I am Mr. Snrub.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 12 March 2007 01:12 (nineteen years ago)

This thread is pretty funny now that you can see all of the old-ILX usernames.

G00blar, Monday, 12 March 2007 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

i'll tell ya why - cuz we're sick of em!

Surmounter, Monday, 12 March 2007 03:05 (nineteen years ago)

Ned Raggett has a very good reason to use a false moniker; his real name is Condaleezza Rice.

The Reverend, Monday, 12 March 2007 03:19 (nineteen years ago)

My real name is Lou Jagger.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 12 March 2007 03:31 (nineteen years ago)

NYCNative, Monday, 12 March 2007 23:12 (nineteen years ago)

Your real name is NYCNative?!

I know, right?, Monday, 12 March 2007 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

Ha! The old version had that and my real name... So I did on my old posts...

NYCNative, Monday, 12 March 2007 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

I consistently have used a psudonym here, and it does fell wierd to have people call you by a different name. Someone made a good point awhile ago in that thread with that dude's "this is my first iLM post, these are all my favourite albums, and this better be a sea of cute indie chicks" thread from like a month ago, which is that lately employers will try to dig up things on prospective employees (and indeed it is something I have even been warned about through university), and often using your real name is a career risk.

I'm not worried about that, why I use a psudonym, I do not know.

mehlt, Monday, 12 March 2007 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

"I'm not employing that guy, he likes really shitty music."

Noodle Vague, Monday, 12 March 2007 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

I have been fooling the Internet community since 1995. My real name is Elvis Aaron Presley.

Not the real Elvis, then, whose middle name is Aron, not Aaron.

jaymc, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 16:00 (nineteen years ago)

Aaron is the Norwegian spelling.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

t**t, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

That's my actual real name, posted IN (not below) my previous post. That was! There!
Only, to make it visible, you gotta pour some milk on it and then run it over, lighlty, with a hot iron.

t**t, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

I tried that and now you owe me a new monitor.

NYCNative, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:41 (nineteen years ago)
