the Nirvana Box

They should call it Heart-Shaped Box and package it like Valentine chocolates. Anyway, Pitchfork reports that it's coming out in November. Interested? Don't think I am. Sounds to me like they're really going to have to scrape to come up with material. Not sure I need to hear the "Pennyroyal Tea" demo.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I am interested, because I haven't got the original records and I like them.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing definitive, but rumor has it the box doesn't have the original records.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Rumour has it, the box only contains sandwiches.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, there are the legendary 150 tapes that's have been sitting in a safety box since Cobain's death, you know the ones Ms. Love called "the holy grail of rock n' roll".

I'm curious of the much talked about "Dough, Ray and Me" which is supposed to be brilliant. Again, according to the self-proclaimed Miss World, since basically no one but her and a few other have heard it.

The idea of an actual heart-shaped box have been up for discussion but scrapped, unfortunately. This metal-platter thing seems far less appealing.

I'm American, Thursday, 9 September 2004 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

this is from the internet nirvana fan club:

NIRVANA BOX SET - 3 CD & 1 DVD
Street Date: Nov. 23, 2004
Features the hits, live performances, previously unreleased rarities and b-sides
Over 50 unreleased recordings including Kurt Cobain's demos
Hours of unheard music and unseen footage
Features a 60 page booklet. DVD with first edition only
3-panel digipack, front cover is a metal plate
Closed size is 26cm x 14.5cm x 2.5cm. Open size is 81cm x 14.5cm

I don't have pricing, artwork or tracklistings at this time but hopefully that will be available soon. I also don't
know yet, if any singles, promos or videos will be released in connection with the box. All I do know is that
what millions of Nirvana fans have been waiting for since 1997 or so is finally here. I really have no idea
what recordings they have used to compile this set. Indeed, some of the Cobain demos must come from all
the cassette tapes that he apparently left behind. The band also did a number of studio sessions which yielded
songs that have yet to be released - although much of this material is already circulating amongst fans. It will
certainly also be interesting to see what the DVD has to offer; perhaps Nirvana's music videos and some live
stuff. It seems unlikely from the description that an entire concert is presented on the DVD. It's probably
clips from various shows. In any case, this is a great day for Nirvana fans!

Billboard posted a story with some new info: "Although a label spokesperson declined to
confirm specifics, Universal Music Enterprises will release a three-CD boxed set from Nirvana in November.
Limited editions of the project will include a DVD, which boasts footage of the Kurt Cobain-led band
playing at a 1987 house party. The box is expected to be one of the most in-demand items at music retail
this holiday season. High hopes were fueled when portions of the DVD were screened at the recent National
Association of Recording Merchandisers conference. 'From what I saw at [NARM] -- which was amazing --
I think it's going to blow everyone away,' Newbury Comics music buyer Carl Mello tells Billboard. 'It really
will out-perform any expectations that customers may have -- even if their expectations are huge.' " Story
courtesy of Billboard. Emphasis added by me. Read more.

I'm less interested now.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it should be shaped like a heart with arteries coming out of it.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

hey i wonder what could possibly be on that dvd to cause that sort of fuss, from the NARM guy? is there even a decnt dvd out there aside from the 'live tonight sold out' one? f'r instance is this even going to contain unplugged stuff, the mtv awards rape me/lithium thing etc.

there can't be many more canon-y bands that r so underrepresented out there in dvd world.

but this idea of not being able to buy the dvds that come with box sets (see also talking heads boxx/dvd) *outside* of the box sets is starting to annoy me, and i fear it will only get worse.

piscesboy, Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

If I were the bass player i wouldn't really want people to see me get hit on the head with my bass like he did that one time. That was painful. Although it is a good lesson for future rockers. DON'T throw your guitar staight up over your head!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry, but I've seen that performance many times and it just looks like typical Novoselic clowning, I've seen much better acting on low-grade wrestling programmes.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 9 September 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

really? it looked like he bonked himself good. I did see it a long time ago though.

unless you are prince. at this year's rock hall of fame inductions, he ended his performance by throwing his guitar straight over his head and walking offstage. as far as one could tell from the tv camera angle, it never came down.

The only Nirvana product I want at this point is a sanctioned version of the "Roma" bootleg. The rest, they can keep.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I had it on tape but accidently taped over it 2 or 3 years ago and am still rueing that day.

Constant yammering about how boring Nirvana is is more boring than Nirvana.

It's not Nirvana that are boring, it's the fact that people are still moaning on and on and on about Nirvana that's FUCKING boring. How much further can the barrel be scraped?

KISS.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, that's kind of jerky. But how is Nirvana fandom any worse than fandom of any other band that's not around any more. (And yes, I know that KJ and Kiss are "still around," but I'm sure there are plenty of other bands that you still like that have broken up.)

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

True, but you don't see me fuckin' lighting candles on any goddamn shrines to them.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, it's just something that we have to learn to except, like cell-phones everywhere and half-shirts on ladies who have no business wearing them.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I AM REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THIS!!!!

(oh, and nobody bitches about My Bloody Valentine box set threads...?)

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever, this is a silly argument and I'm not going to get involved in it. I have this (admittadly knee-jerk) reaction to negative comments about Nirvana and their legacy, because while in hindsight I can see aspects of their music that are kind of annoying or pompous, they were EXTREMELY influential on me, not just in terms of the music that I listen to and play, but a lot of my social attitudes (their feminism and anti-homophobia was pretty exciting to me as an early teen). So when people say that they weren't important or that their influence on music/culture was negative (which is not really what Alex/V.Bingo are doing on this thread, but it's something I've seen time and time again on ILM), it pisses me off like few music-related statements do.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Despite the suicide/depression/drugs, there are much much much worse people to emulate and idolize than K. Cobain.

I can never spell "admittedly" right. I'm not even sure that THAT's right.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

here is something from the guitar board that made me laugh:

I was always amused by the fact that a lot of Nirvana songs were in DGCFAD.
-- AaronHz (aaronh...), September 3rd, 2004.

kephm, Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder if they'll have the Albini version of In Utero, or bits of it. it's probably indistinguishable from the Litt-doctored versh, but i'm still curious. i once did an interview with Rye Coalition where they claimed that Albini let them hear it, and that it was "the greatest thing ever". i can't believe this is true, but.

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get the tuning joke.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Are they releasing the "unreleased" songs?

I remember thinking when "Nirvana" came out that "You Know You're Right" should have been released and a tangible stand-alone single...but I guess if they'd done that, no-one would have bought "Nirvana."

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the tuning joke is 'DGC' (as in Geffen Records) "FAD' (as in, well, wasn't it one to sign alt/grunge acts in the early 90s.) Hmph.

Dark Horse, Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Raymond: actually young people are still really into Nirvana. i can't tell you how many of my teenage students declared that they are huge Nirvana fans, and had copies of that best-of without owning the albums.

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 9 September 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i've always been an unapologetic nirvana fan so i'll prolly get it.

"It's not Nirvana that are boring, it's the fact that people are still moaning on and on and on about Nirvana that's FUCKING boring. How much further can the barrel be scraped?

-- Alex in NYC (vassife...), September 9th, 2004."

i definitely understand that sentiment (all that "St. Kurt" bullshit is irritating even to me). but this box set's been in the making for a while (and was delayed by legal battles) so those of us who are fans have a little bit to be excited about.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Thursday, 9 September 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I honestly doubt there could be more than 5 songs - okay, okay, at the MOST, EIGHT songs, but thats really, really pushing it - that no one has heard before. The rest will likely be the best tracks from the "Outcesticide" bootlegs.

I'll be buying it for those 5 new songs, and the DVD.

As for the MBV box, that's for another thread.

billstevejim, Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, is it scraping the barrel if there's lots of unreleased music that people haven't heard? It's not like 15 Tupac albums with old verses over new beats or something. It's stuff nobody's heard yet, theoretically.

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Vic Funk, Thursday, 9 September 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

lots of unreleased music that people haven't heard?

Do " 5 songs - okay, okay, at the MOST, EIGHT songs" warrant a fuckin' box set?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

But they can make so much more MONEY than they could by releasing a single cd, Alex.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, we're really talking about two issues here:

(A) The shameless fleecing of the fans by the record company.
(B) The misguided deification of Nirvana.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not like 15 Tupac albums with old verses over new beats or something.

that Tupac Live album that just came out is pretty cool actually...

But they can make so much more MONEY than they could by releasing a single cd, Alex.

ehh, scratch a box-set, find a ripoff. or not, if you love the loveliness box sets offer...

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Do "5 songs - okay, okay, at the MOST, EIGHT songs" warrant a fuckin' box set?

The 5-8 songs I'm referring to are along the lines of "Dough Ray and Me," the ones that only C.Love and a select few have heard. For the record, there are plenty of Outcesticide tracks that have never been issued as an official album track or b-side, and the quality of recording for most of these is not especially great. The ones who are likely to buy this box would have heard of the majority of these songs by now, but this collection will gives the opportunity to finally hear songs like "Opinion" or "Old Age" with the same quality as their most popular songs.

Hm, I could have said that with less words, but I'm too lazy..

billstevejim, Thursday, 9 September 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

On what basis are they saying this box will be such a huge seller? I mean, how many copies did that best of sell? I believe it wasnt such a huge number. And then think about how many of those ppl are hard core fans who'd buy a box vs. fans who just wanted the greatest hits all on one disc. I have a feeling we'll see multiple copies of this box on store shelves for years to come.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Thursday, 9 September 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

the best of sold over a million, i think. granted, mostly to kids in malls out of a sense of generational/coming-of-age/rebellion-is-hip duty.

drew, Thursday, 9 September 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

1)I'm going to buy this the day it comes out
2)My "DGCFAD" thing wasn't a joke, it was an observation, the Nirvana songs in this tuning include: Come As You Are, Lithium and Drain You. There are probably more but these are the ones I know for sure. Cobain tuned down only a half step as opposed to a whole on In Utero. Nirvana were the biggest band in the world when I was learning to play guitar, and their songs are extremely easy to play for a beginning guitarist. Consequently I can play just about any Nirvana song you want from memory.
3)Those Outcesticide songs like "Opinions" and "Talk To Me" are pretty cool, I'll be glad to have them on a nice official CD along with all this other stuff.
4)Anyone notice Nirvana threads read exactly like Beatles threads nowadays? Face it doubters: Nirvana's rock-canonship is CEMENTED.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Thursday, 9 September 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The first Nirvana album I bought was the "greatest hits" one.
It totally got me into rock music.
On the box thing, well, I just hope it has unreleased music and rarities. New stuff.

I'd say it's worth $50 to me just to have it all in one place, plus I want that DVD. Out of the ones I have heard, some I have on an 8 year old cassette dub, most not at all anymore. I just won't buy a PS2 game or whatever else I'd otherwise piss away $50 on this month.

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 06:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i am wondering how many of these songs are mislabelled or alternate titles. also, their inclusion of beans and mv really shows that they're scraping the bottom of the barrel on this one.

jushinthunderliger (deangulberry), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh, I dunno about that. Beans, while pointless filler, was on all those mid 90s bootlegs, so might as well. As far as MV goes, as they're rounding up all the b-sides and comp tracks here, why leave it out?

Hi, I am a genius. a big one. (AaronHz), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 06:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I read the 'Word' article about this box set, it makes it sound like the most depressing thing ever released. I don't know whether it is, or whether it's just a knock-on effect of the accepted way to write about Nirvana these days. Anyway, I don't like 'Word', it is insufferably smug. I was a bit pissed off for paying for it, but at least it will help make sure I don't pay for the box set, so quite a good investment.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 12 November 2004 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Around £36-£38 pounds, it seems.

YES.
The very same song.

yes, but it's the "we had arsenal on the run" version.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 12 November 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Although the fact that one issue of 'Word' costs a thumping 10% of the price of the box set makes the latter look quite a good buy.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 12 November 2004 12:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I've preordered mine from Amazon.

cover is on metallic finish. DVD is OK-ish, though you pretty much gotta like handheld cams. disc one is nearly unlistenable, literally--sounds like shit. still need top play discs two and three. For Fans Only.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, that's disappointing -- I had this fantasy that it would be all those Outcesticide tracks polished to sound really nice. I'll still buy the damned thing, of course.

sounds like they really should have called the thing 'Beat the Boots'

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 19 November 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

but there's a *lot* of good stuff that's ot been bootlegged before. and the second disk soesn't sound *that* bad - not much worse than Bleach, in places. i mean, i wouldn't flush the Ayler box just because the fidelity is sketchy in places (and there's nothing as crapppy as the worst tapes on there)

nicetrooper, Friday, 19 November 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the Leadbelly covers are charming, very varied in mood - one almost feels like a drinking song. the in utero demos are raw and excellent - there's one of scentless apprentice which is a 10 minute take during which they actually write the song (you can hear that titanic drum break being born). the solo demos of 'all apologies' and 'you know you're right' are breath-taking, the early stuff is fascinating in the way they depict Nirvana as Melvins clones slowly developing their own identity.

stevie (stevie), Friday, 19 November 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, my review ran today in the stranger - my thoughts are a smidgeon more lucid there...

stevie (stevie), Friday, 19 November 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, definitely for fans only. And if you are a fan it's pretty dissapointing in as much as you probably already have everything on the box via bootlegs. Most of the reviews I've seen so far have been predictably reverent. Although the Word piece seemed a little suspicious and the review in the new Mojo pans it pretty hard and points out that Courtney may be saving the best stuff off Cobain's home tapes for a "solo release" where she gets all the money.

mcorte, Friday, 19 November 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The best part of this is the DVD. In fact, for big fans I'd say that it's the only reason to buy it.

Like the Beatles, Nirvana has been so thoroughly bootlegged that I'm not really sure what is useful about this release other than the DVD. I mean, how many hard core fans haven't bothered to pick up the bootlegs via trading circles or Bit Torrent over the past three years. The extra three years it took to deliver this set probably cost 100,000 in sales--at least that many people, probably more, got all these tracks in comparable quality for free. Wake up, record labels.

don weiner, Friday, 19 November 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

And if you are a fan it's pretty dissapointing in as much as you probably already have everything on the box via bootlegs.

Advantageously for me, perhaps, while I consider myself something of a fan I never shelled out for the bootlegs (file searching, that I could have done, but I was downloading other things). So in respects, this set sounds perfect for the likes of me!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 November 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Same here, bought maybe 1 Nirvana boot, none of which is duplicated here.

I don't think you can really blame Nirvana for releasing these tracks. "You can't sell that music, we already bought a shoddier version off those guys who bootlegged you". That doesn't make sense. I love bootlegs but come on, these guys aren't exactly Robin Hood, y'know?

stevie (stevie), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, of course. But it's always galling when they mark tracks with 'previously unreleased' and you have had them for years..

(e.g. Beatles Anthology)

And the Sex Pistols where the tracks had actually been released on 'semi-legal' albums...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 19 November 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone who's shelled out cash for bootlegs in the past couple of years either doesn't have internet access or is generally ignorant to the bootleg market. This isn't meant as criticism to you Ned or Stevie, just pointing out that I think you are hopefully exceptions to the rule. Thankfully, the internet has seriously damaged the bootleg market to the point where I really can't believe it exists for things like "Ultra Rare Trax" and the like.

Still, record companies and artists should hold an advantage--while the recordings may have leaked over the years, we're still at a point where a beautiful booklet/liners can make a difference to a buyer. Personal photos and effects create value that give the labels a competitive advantage over the bootleggers; again, I don't see this as a lasting advantage, but it's current enough that it should be properly leveraged.

don weiner, Friday, 19 November 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Booklet is nice (tho no gullick pix - dumb courtney). its a nice object... i like the way the tracks tell the story of the band so completely as well. this is definitely more the nirvana i loved than the greatest hits last year (or Journals, for that matter, or MTV Unplugged or Wishkah)

The extra three years it took to deliver this set probably cost 100,000 in sales--at least that many people, probably more, got all these tracks in comparable quality for free. Wake up, record labels.

Around the third or fourth time the set was being announced as delayed, around summer 2002, was when I decided to make my own boxed set by downloading as much of the Outcesticide tracks, Peel Sessions, Rio Sessions, etc, as I could find and putting them onto 3 CD's. I find it downright lame that Krist Novoselic claimed he had access to such fantastic music when it was all just the same stuff the fans have heard already. So come November 23rd, I'll be spending my money on the 8 songs I've never heard, at least 4 of which I'm sure sound are in shit quality, and the DVD.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 20 November 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Well yeah, but seeing as how they gathered up all the other comp tracks and b-sides as far as I can tell, it's conspicuous in its absence.

Every country has their stupid (AaronHz), Saturday, 20 November 2004 04:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I get you. I was just being pedantic about the "officially released" thing.

Actually, what pisses ME off is that this thing apparently doesn't include the finished version of "You Know You're Right" (instead, just a demo). I mean, how fucking annoying is THAT? I still refuse to buy that stupid greatest hits cd.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 20 November 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Well thats exactly why it's not on here, because that GH would become completely worthless except perhaps to 10 year old who've never heard Nirvana and blah blah blah etc.

I own one of course.

Every country has their stupid (AaronHz), Saturday, 20 November 2004 04:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I did not realize C/Z Records still existed. I got it on a high-quality 4/c offset and silkscreen printed bootleg CD that has a "record label" name, too, so I guess even that is an official release of some sort.

Incidentally, has anyone else noticed bootlegs are all color copies or epson print-outs these days? I miss the glorious days of high quality $20 bootlegs just before Napster came out.

asdf troll, Saturday, 20 November 2004 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I might buy that Greatest Hits thing instead.

Holy mackerel.

got the box for Xmas.

so so good.

Kurt was amazing. He really was. What a fun guy. I just love the Bleach-era stuff -- he had such great control over his voice.

Best white-boy screamer since Lennon. I suppose i should append that statement with a "...maaaaaan". But whatever. It's so fuckin' true.

I love that first disc on the box. 'White lace & strange', 'anerexorcist', etc. ... that IS the Nirvana I fell in love with.

that's the Nirvana that ruled my world when I saw them in 1990 with Tad at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor.

Heavy fuckin' metal.

god bless kurt. rock and roll

The Mad Puffin, Tuesday, 4 January 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I posted about it on another thread, but this fuckin rules. Favorite tracks: They Hung Him On A Cross, Even In His Youth, Aneurysm demo, acoustic sliver, clean up before she comes, anorexorcist, scentless apprentice jam, gallons of rubbing alcohol...

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

There's all sorts of stuff that didn't make the box. Like the single version of Moist Vagina, stuff off the "Blew" ep, the Sub Pop 200 version of Spank Thru, Krist's drunken phone call off the "Sliver" 7".
Still, an amazing trek...

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 12 September 2013 15:59 (twelve years ago)

Not really, all of the b-side and non-album tracks are piled in with the alternate takes and demos on the With the Lights Out box, they've never really had a single disc non-album comp. Some of the Outcesticide bootlegs might get you closer, but a lot of those are live tracks, not necessarily b-side stuff.

Haha, I think you've answered your own question here! Incesticide is precisely what you're referring to and is not a studio album.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Thursday, 12 September 2013 16:57 (twelve years ago)

Yeah I knew that, kind of wishing for Incesticide II really! There seems to be enough material knocking around.

I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Thursday, 12 September 2013 17:09 (twelve years ago)

Oh sorry, I thought you didn't know that because you said four studio albums (they only had three: Bleach / Nevermind / In Utero).

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:30 (twelve years ago)

is there actually much material left that isn't on those four albums?

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 12 September 2013 20:42 (twelve years ago)

Blandest is pretty great. Why wasn't that on Incesticide?

Poliopolice, Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:21 (twelve years ago)

it also has maybe the single best Nirvana lyric (and it's the chorus!): "I need you around to remind me what not to become"

Poliopolice, Thursday, 12 September 2013 21:22 (twelve years ago)

Oh sorry, I thought you didn't know that because you said four studio albums (they only had three: Bleach / Nevermind / In Utero).

― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli)

My fault for not having having stringent definitions; in my head Incesticide is a studio album because it's a collection of songs that were recorded in a studio.

is there actually much material left that isn't on those four albums?

― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.),

Glancing through the tracklist of the box I can see a decent album's worth of extra studio recordings (not necessarily Cobain compositions, mind).

Years after having dismissed grunge I happened upon a very cheap copy of Nirvana's "Nevermind" in a used CD shop and it's far from as spectacular as I used to think it was. In fact, I could barely finish side 2.

a mad urea nub (how's life), Thursday, 30 April 2015 20:30 (eleven years ago)

If that's real then in the 14 years that have passed I think it rules again like I did when I was in middle school when it came out. I even did a cover last year of "On a Plain":

the increasing costive borborygmi (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 30 April 2015 20:51 (eleven years ago)

Hah I was really punk rock at that time so I probably thought it was too corporate.

It kinda still is production wise but it stands out more now, it has a more unique sound without all those. Around that time it seemed like that production style was all over the kind of bad rock radio you would hear in a Footlocker or sports store. The songs are still killer though, the lyrics in "Underneath the Bridge" are a huge highlight for me now. Yeah excuse the younger me I was probably trying hard to seem cool.
