In the interest of not boring every non-San Franciscan on ILM with our SF show chatter, should we start a thread dedicately solely to SF show chatter?

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm seein Alejandro Jodorowsky tonight. Which is not a show per se, but will hopefully be just as absorbing.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 23 November 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

SMC: I just got El Topo on DVD if you want to borrow it.

DD: My Corny Opera FUx0r coworker went last night and said it was "The WORST... EVAH!!!" and went on and on and on. It must have been really great. I haven't been since "Cunning Little Fox" (I think that's what it was called, it was cute.)

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh darn. First I missed the Messiaen premiere and now this too.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

it must be nice to have shows to chatter about.

So...is there anything going on?

adam... (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i would be remiss if I didn't plug my friend Alessandro "Sacha" Bernardelli Galvagna's show on November 30th at the Rite Spot performing under the name Sanchez. This would be "new folk america" if he weren't italian/british. Many songs about dying and the baby jesus. Also performing is some Comets on Fire dude doing a solo thing (not sure who or what). This show is supposed to be on the QT but I'm telling everyone anyway. ABG used to play guitar in a band called Rosa Mota but don't expect anything like that.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The OAKS CARD CLUB??? You've got to be fucking kidding.

Oh wait. You are.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

This show is supposed to be on the QT

Is the "QT" the same thing as the "DL" ?

King Kobra (King Kobra), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

no QT, we're talking about you and how good you look in those jeans

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Jodorowsky talk was awesome, very funny and illuminating. And I got a recording. Every time things seemed like they might veer into sappy self-help territory he would become sort of brutal and no-nonsense. Very no-bullshit kind of guy. And he has nothing to sell, no books, videos, "systems", whatever (always a prerequisite for me when receiving "spiritual advice" from someone).

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 23 November 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

errrrr....

Oh never mind.

adam... (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

haha

King Kobra (King Kobra), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 23 November 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the kind of thing that's best left unsaid.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Tuesday, 23 November 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

whatever.

anyone see Sunn O)))) on Sunnnnnnday?

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

No. I was sorta thinking about it, but I felt crap. How was it?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I really wanted to go, but being strapped for cash I had to choose between that and Jodo. I opted for Jodo since appearances in the US are extremely rare for him...

is anything happening in December? I didn't see much in the usual listings to whet my appetite.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

December is always a crap show month.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

man that Jon Stewart "...not so much" meme sure does get around.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

it's like when Bush kept repeating "make no mistake" in his speeches, eventually the entire media corps seemed to pick it up

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm just ramblin here, don't mind me...

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

You should really see if you can get Alejandro Jodorowsky to take a look at that ramblin' problem, Shakey.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys up in SF are so cultured!

We cant even get Ellen Allien to come down to LA...

sigh..

hector (hector), Wednesday, 24 November 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Shakey- yeah, SunnO))) were great the other night! It was my first Sunn show. Loved the one "song" set. Didya like? Enjoyed The Hidden hand as well, but the real treat was the Om set! Can't wait for the record in January. Broke out Sleep's "Jerusalem" yesterday to re-live the feeling.

CL, Wednesday, 24 November 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Shoot, I meant to go to that SunnO))) show too. Darn. I am going to go see Ryan Junell's video installation thingie tonight (saturday) at 9 at Theater Artaud. It's called "See the Elephant!" and is some kind of four video screen monstrosity about the Republican National convention.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Sunday, 28 November 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 January 2005 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Mighty is supposed to be pretty cool but I've flaked on everything I've ever heard of that happened there so I can't say for sure.

"The other big news is that it looks like Subtek, Jamin, Ripley, and I are going to be starting a monthly at Nickie's on Haight street, first Saturday of every month. Much more info will be coming, for sure, and we've yet to has out some details, but it will be on of the few (if only?) regular parties in the Bay Area to push the Grime/Dubstep sound, although it won't be exclusively that. It'll be held together by a general thread of dub/ragga for the dancefloor. More info to come, as well as the top 10 and pics from NYE and such. Soon. I promise."

THE GRIME/DUBSTEP/RAGGA THING IS GOING TO BE MONTHLY (and it's not in Oakland--only 10 blocks from me house!)

I may go see the Fehlmann thing too (although I tend to not get into laptop shows.) Where is the Compound?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

and it's not in Oakland--only 10 blocks from me house!)

Sucks for me, though! :)

Why is it that I don't think they mean vocal "grime" tracks?

.adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

They mean vocal grime tracks (and probably some sublow stuff too.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Has milton been to this place before?

.adam (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

many times. one of the best sound systems in sf, 16 speaker surround matrix, most of them ceiling mounted . small room with no chairs though, it's a room for listening, which is weird when dance acts play. the ambience out at the edge of the shipyards is great.

(Jon L), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I have never been down there, obviously. I think you have sold me!

Haha so the Compound. Discuss.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, is the Compound aka recombinant media labs? why don't they just pick a name and stick with it?

I'm guessing this place got in trouble for not having a cabaret license or something, but if it's a private residence who the fuck cares?

from the bonnie billy site:" WESTERN SHOWS:
There's some western activity. Unlike what's heard, noooooooooooo Bolinas and nooooo Utah, but Santa Monica in January and probably more, look at Billions and Drag City for righteous information. "

dunno when this was updated, but this may mean Oldham will not be presiding at the Bolinas event, though he will be doing an instore at Amoeba on Sunday. rah.

off topic: i think recombinant media labs is also the asphodel "studio"/ home of the asphodel dude.

subspace is colder, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

so - who's going to see Mu next thursday?

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

The 8pm set happened. We saw Deadbeat and half of Monolake (who was frankly sorta dull) and then split.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be at MU, i think... what up with the monolake shutdown?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Cops shut it down (just after we left).

Where is Mu?

otto hauser and michael hurley twice in a week!

oh hey alex in sf, just saw your mention of the grime/dubstep thing at nickie's - i'll be playing at that regularly (jamin and subtek were residents at my night Safe at The Top), but i fall firmly into the dubstep camp as im not a big fan of the grime. :)

heywood jablomi (heywood), Thursday, 20 January 2005 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I need to hear Lowflow.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm, maybe I should mention that me and my 9-piece psych-rock shitstorm band are playing tomorrow night at the Hotel Utah:

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, that didn't work:
http://www.societyofrockets.org/pages/hotel%20utah%201-28-05.htm

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

my not very loud band is playing the Utah on the 19th of february. this is far enough in advance for no-one to plan anything else (except for adam who has an excuse).

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Thursday, Jan 27 2005 8:00 PM, the luggage store, 1007 market street (nr 6th)

8pm: miba (Kristin Miltner & Mark Bartscher)
9pm: Antimatter (Xopher Davidson)

also, Matmos dj thing late tonight at make out room

(Jon L), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Lowflow is great - really lovely stuff, sort of deceptively low-key at first. I keep hearing elements of Urban Tribe in it (and Andy Kellman didn't disagree).

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 27 January 2005 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, also a late addition for tonight.. !!! w/ Out Hud @ Mighty. nothing on the Mighty site, just saw it in the Bay Guardian. i think it may just be a DJ set tho.

I'm not a big Richman fan, but Dengue Fever are really great (and played the best NYE show Alex in SF ever saw! Or so he claimed once). I probably won't go to any of these but thought I'd mention it. They have tickets at the bar.

kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 5 February 2005 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I might go see Dengue Fever again. And yeah that was an amazing New Year's Eve show. BEST EVAH!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 5 February 2005 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 11 February 2005 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

If I wasn't already seeing Michael Mayer on 03/04, I would definitely be going to see The Rebirth Brass Band at The Independent!

Lil' Flip Scoldjah??!?!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 21 April 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

their poster for that event is pretty cool, but I'm a sucker for that style. It gladdens my heart to no end that there's so much great poster art in town right now (see also: Urban Inks!!!). Just a few years ago there was me and pretty much no one else (I don't rate Kozik), now it isn't quite so lonely.

countryand western!

Levinicus (nordicskilla), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i have no idea what that means!

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

The Catacombs - hmm, I've never heard of this place. what the dilly yo? (my very first show ever was at a collective/warehouse space at 18th and Capp)

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

that's probably the same space then, down the street from the Uptown (other end of the block). It was only called the Catacombs for a short while, I still call it that, probably to everyone else's frustration. It's a warehouse with a residential area built into the top of it; downstairs is a performance space and recording studio. Our friend Jose runs it/lives there. He doesn't do many public shows there any more though.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

yup. man, that place has a long and storied history (I know someone who's lived there for years - we hate each other now tho, long story. I haven't set foot in there since the front door got riddled with bullets in a driveby).

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:26 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa! who do you know who lives there? all the roomates got kicked out a while ago and replaced.

the place started out as a kind of new-christian collective and they did a lot of folky religious group meetings there for ages.

capp st. seems so safe these days. I hardly ever see hookers down there! i guess that's good.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

That's cuz the hookers there have learned the ancient Japanese art of ninjitsu. Also I think they are down on Shotwell now.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I still, to this day, can't believe there is a street named SHOTWELL

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's someone's last name. He probably had a relative that y'know shot well.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, it's sort of bad etiquette to name names on the Internet, ennit? I'm kinda wondering if this is the same place tho, wish I knew the exact address - it's on the northwest corner of 18th and Capp. When I first started going there (1998?) it was occupied by the Mission Burrito Project, which was a bunch of white hip-hop guys who passed out free burritos to the homeless. I still have one of their mixtapes around somewhere....

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

always wondered what band you were in kyle

posting gigs I'm involved in feels weird but I usually proceed if I'm a huge fan of the other bands

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

wait wait, no that's wrong, its on the northwest corner of 17th and Capp. sorry.

x-post

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

oh right, that's down a block.

Jon I saw you at tuxedomoon but decided not to bug you (Drew pointed you out at the MOR when they DJ'd there).

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

If I was in a band and my band had shows in SF... you would hear about it here.

Levinicus (nordicskilla), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Is anyone going to have enough bad taste to go see that Lennon! musical? because I want to know just how terrible it is. If it's anything like the clips I saw on the news this morning, it is CRINGE INDUCING

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

start a band! call the band 'adam'.

xpost say hi next time -- did you go to the rickshaw tuxedomoon show?

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

no, du nord

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I was interviewed for The JoeFlynn Show on Comcast Channel 15A in San Francisco.

Nam,C, Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, I LOVE Comcast Channel 15A!!!!

Levinicus (nordicskilla), Thursday, 21 April 2005 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I read article about Lennon musical - Yoko said if John were alive he'd love it. That doesn't justify it and I'm still not going. I bet its boring but you never know

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 21 April 2005 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the Lennon musical looks beyond belief.

I didn't go to rickshaw either, was just trying to figure out if the second set was much different. I liked them okay, especially the new stuff, I was fighting their new taste in drum loops (hard to beat the minimal minipops jr.)

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 21 April 2005 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

As a tourist here, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get from SF to Breathing Room in Oakland (3617 san pablo), which is where the Coachwhips/DMBQ show is now listed as being, via MUNI/BART. Anyone care to help me out? the email address below works fine if you care to take this off the board.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Saturday, 23 April 2005 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey everybody, sorry if this seems like tacky self-promotion but what the hell I just want people to come to the Bottom of the Hill Monday night to support Dax Pierson- the lineup is Sagan and Jel and Alias and DJ Doseone and also my band (matmos) and the show is all ages and all the money goes to a very good cause, a really sweet and creative person who is facing a severe situation. Maybe you already know about the show, but I thought just in case I would pipe up about it.

June 11th, at the new 21 Grand in Oakland. This will be our last show for a while. We're playing last. I know Wilco is playing in Berkeley at the same time. We're cheaper.

in the meantime, if you're in SF this Saturday, consider stopping by 3435 Ceaser Chavez St., ste. 226, for Pause, an Evening of Sound; Santa Cruz's excellent Kallikak Family will be playing, as well as one of my bandmates. More info here: http://www.magnetique.nu/pause/

Hmmm, Spoon is playing the Fillmore on my last night in SF, June 19 (and the 20th as well). But I could see em for free at the Coney Siren fest in July... and stick with Enon at Bottom of the Hill.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

JL how is the new 21 Grand space, incidentally? we're playing there tomorrow and I haven't been there. How does it compare to the last one?

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

it's a lot better than the last one. same garage aesthetic, but nicer ceiling, nice long driveway you have to walk down from the street that gives people a place to step outside and chat without feeling like you're too exposed... same JBL speakers but I even the sound of those in that space, they shred.

right next to God's Gym, with a building-sized mural of two musclebound arms clasped around a bladed crucifix while a latin weightlifting Jesus looks on in the background

milton parker (Jon L), Friday, 10 June 2005 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh right, I know exactly where that is! God's gym!

Anyone to weigh in on 12 Galaxies vs Hemlock Tavern? Bueller?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

12 Galaxies is big, the hemlock is tiny. The Hemlock is more apt to be filled with really annoying people, 12 Galaxies almost never is.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, our show at 21 Grand went great, Jon, you're right about the ceiling in there, everything was very resonant. A much nicer space than the last location; my favorite place to play in the bay area so far, the people that run it are the best.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, it was a cool place...I think!

the D Double signal (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, I'll lean toward 12 Galaxies for Leaving Trains and hope the only annoying person I have to focus on is Falling James.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 14 June 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Lucinda Williams / John Doe at Sterns Grove tomw. I'll be in the 69 Love Songs tee, maybe.

fight! fight! fight! fight!

a real bear behind the microphone (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 June 2005 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

No! Someone at the Go-Betweens got in a fight??!?! That's shocking.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 24 June 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, it was between a local middle-ager and a real live British pub hooligan who, after the fight, yelled up to grant and robert that he'd seen them play fourteen times. was quite a little scene going, with grant having to stop the show temporarily and call security over to break things up.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 24 June 2005 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

oh wait, did you mean that facetiously alex?

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 24 June 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha no I am seriously shocked that people are getting engaging in fisticuffs at GO-BETWEENS shows!!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 24 June 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Just like "Spring Rain" my ass, I KILL YOU NOW!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 24 June 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

hahah.. ok, that's what i thought. the funny thing was that it was started by a guy who's an obvious fan, and not by some thug off the street who'd never heard the band before.

i can't believe the clientele opened for spoon! they should have played somewhere else

it's like, two blocks from west oakland bart station. the directions on the site are :

IRECTIONS FROM SAN FRANSISCO BY CAR
-Merge onto I-80 E toward BAY BRIDGE/OAKLAND.
5.1 miles
-Take the I-880 S exit toward ALAMEDA/AIRPORT/SAN JOSE.
0.4 mile
-Merge onto W GRAND AVE toward MARITIME ST.
1.1 miles
-Turn RIGHT onto CAMPBELL ST.
0.2 miles
-End at 1800 CAMPBELL ST OAKLAND CA

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 24 June 2005 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

and it's a red door on the side of a brick wall and otherwise slightly hard to find. but I think the number of the place is above the door.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 24 June 2005 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there a new Clientele record? I like that band a lot, they're like super8 film!

a real live British pub hooligan (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 June 2005 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think there's a new one, but that would be great if there was. opening for loud-ass spoon at the crappy ass fillmore is not where they should be. they should play in my living room!

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 24 June 2005 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost

thanks for the directions, you're a pal.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 24 June 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

There will be new records soonish (August), British Pub Hooligain.

Kyle, you could perhaps tempt them into your living room by offering to make them an afternoon barbeque (with lots of beer), then just trap them there. Trust me, I've done it.

Anyway, when they are in SF in November they won't be opening for Spoon.

marianna, Sunday, 26 June 2005 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

YAY! good. I missed them the first time around.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 26 June 2005 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I was really pissed about the Clientele/Spoon thing because I hadn't read the news that Clientele *weren't* playing the Sunday show. And of course, Monday was sold out. Oh well, if they're coming back in November...

The most pathetic thing about the fight at the Go-Betweens show was that the hooligan ended up on his back kicking up at people. It looked like he still lived in his mom's basement.

If you all are looking for something to do after the 4th of July, might I suggest this summer's SF indiepop fest: http://warble.org/popfest which yours truely has spent a good amount of time organizing.

mikef (mfleming), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry about that Mike. I updated the webpage and did send some emails out, but I guess a lot of people didn't know. They weren't sure if they could make it down to SF in time, but then Spoon said they could go in their bus. 2 days before the show Spoon's bus driver decided he couldn't do the drive so Spoon flew down and the Clientele had to stay up all night driving anyway!

I am disappointed about missing the Popfest again this year!

marianna, Monday, 27 June 2005 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Clientele were good, at least they sounded great, but Spoon fans were not amused ...

Is there a new Clientele record? I like that band a lot, they're like super8 film!

New record out in the fall, it's called "Strange Geometry".

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 8 July 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

i know that's a completely lazy blanket assessment of hip-hop concerts, but seriously, i've never known a genre of music to produce so many horribly bad live shows. got nothing to do with the music, but the production/performance

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 8 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

I've only seen one hip-hop show that was really great, and that was Slick Rick w/Doug E. Fresh. Well, and the Black Dot Collective's set at a Mission Creek Festival show at El Rio several years ago, they were awesome.

everyone else has been severely disappointing.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 8 July 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Howdy folks. I'm sorta new to S.F., having moved here late last year from D.C. I've had the fortune to see some good shows so far (Comets on Fire @ 12galaxies, Slint @ the GAMH, Blithe Sons & Birchville Cat Motel at the Hemlock Tavern, Oxbow at the same place more recently ... been kinda poor, tho, and haven't been to much recently. Bummer missing Ellen Allien the other month.

I'd love to see Ruins on Sunday (or Yellow Swans & Axolotl this Friday), but I'm usually down in Santa Cruz on the weekends. Still, should I happen to be going to the same show some night, I'd love to meet up w/any ILMers for a drink & chat. Are Acid Mothers tickets available yet for the show at Bottom of the Hill in September? I don't want to miss out ...

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 21 July 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Hey Shakey Mo...

I'm curious... did you get a permit for that show at Potrero Del Sol or are just doing it gorilla style? I'm the one who put on the Mind Zap Fest at McLaren Park back in april w/Erase Errata, Lil' Flip Scoldjah, etc. and I tried like hell to have it at Potrero Del Sol but the Parks people wouldn't let me. I thought about risking it, but some of the bands were from out of town so i wanted to do it legit. Anyway, McLaren turned out to better... like Lord of the Rings or some shit.

Anyway, just curious.

Thanks.

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 25 August 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

yes, FAP sometime soon! xpost

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Thursday, 25 August 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

sold out every night, the place seats maybe 150. subotnick played a revised version of 'until spring' for 8 channel surround, aided by miguel frasconi. two laptops, but subotnick also had a microphone set out which he'd whisper & spit into to trigger samples that wasn't routed to the speakers; it was just a control input. I'm not sure but it may have also been controlling the movement of the sounds in the surround matrix. the structure completely different from the original (fantastic) piece, the original's buchla sounds showed up in sample form about 10 minutes in and blended perfectly. some people said they wish it had been crazier, definitely subdued compared to 'silver apples' or 'touch' but the textures were still distinctively his style and I liked it very much.

I thought I had read somewhere that this was at The Warfield but the BSS and P-fork sites say The Grand...

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Saturday, 27 August 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

i will be at the earth/circle show!! but i think i will only be staying for earth ...

OK - quick question.

i am gonna go see richie hawtin the mezzanine. is there a dress code? can i get in w/ sneakers? shorts? i wanna rave it up but i don't wanna get turned away.

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 1 September 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

i don't think anywhere you'd want to go is going to have a dress code in this city. Mezzanine is in the heart of the hood

JAXON (jaxon), Thursday, 1 September 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

dude i went to see DJ FUNK spin ghettohouse w/ tylero and got turned away because i wasn't wearing dress shoes!

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 1 September 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

i mean, i was w/ tylero, not tylero was spinning w/ dj funk (not that he doesn't have TEH SKILLZ but...)

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 1 September 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

where did they ask you to wear dress shoes? i've never worn dress shoes the 6 years i've lived in san francisco except to weddings

JAXON (jaxon), Thursday, 1 September 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

I've never seen a single place in SF that's had a dress code. I am sure they must exist (Ruby Skye maybe?) but if they do they are def places that are better off to avoid.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 1 September 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

some of the rizier clubs in the marina/north beach/noma area have dress codes.

that's why they all suck.

i missed EARTH

=(

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

I missed the Merzbow/Earth/Circle show because I was in Switzerland and Italy playing Matmos shows at festivals and stuff. But I saw a killer Jamie Lidell live show in Geneva. How was the Great American hoe-down?

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

i was only at mezzanine for about an hour, but what i heard of his set seemed to be pretty um...standard i guess. the crowd and the lack of any cohesive vibe was pretty annoying truth be told. it didn't feel like anything was really connecting. there were some technical troubles (skippy decks?) too. he played lots of crunchy minimal stuff (surprise surprise)

tricky (disco stu), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

aw you should have stayed!! the crowd thinned out at about 3 am. i absoluted HATED the crunchy minimal stuff - but at about 3 he dropped trevor rockcliffe's "sound called house" to a BIG crowd response, then he stormed through an hour of hard detroit tech-house with a kevin saunderson sort of vibe. lots of octave basslines and things. he used his laptop to beef up some of the tracks with the drum rolls from "spastik", too, which was a pretty neat trick.

anyway i stayed until 4 am - and i was really glad i did!

i'm not really sure what you mean about "the crowd". i am sort of used to LA/SD club scenes - let me tell you that the crowd at mezzanine was WAAAAAY less "bridge & tunnel" than the crowd at, say, jeff mills @ spundae. but they did sort of do this annoying thing where everyone would pack in towards the front, arms crossed, to watch richie hawtin. then, when richie would hit a groove, they'd decide it was time to dance, except people had packed in like they were watching a show, so it became a mosh pit of elbows and shit.

some clown in front of me kept swinging his dirty trustafarian afro hair into my face!! so i ended up dancing towards the back until about 3, when i was able to get a pretty good spot near the monitors on the right ...

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

tricky - any idea who was the warmup dj? the heavyset guy w/ the beard who played maurizio and paperclip people and stuff? because i thought he was GREAT.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

oh man i should have stayed. i had been pining for a big event too. what you're describing about the crowd is exactly what i hate, but putting the dj up on a pedestal is kind of conducive to behavior like that.

xpost, no idea, i got there pretty late. (around 1 i think)

tricky (disco stu), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

probably nikola baytala. one of the city's best dj's imo...

wow, i've never even heard of that place. would it still be worthwhile to stop by?

JAXON (jaxon), Thursday, 8 September 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

if you like jazz vinyl. it's in oakland. while you're over there, stop at groove yard a couple blocks down the street.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 8 September 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

do i like jazz vinyl? hah

i mainly ask because is it worth it? has it already been picked to death?

JAXON (jaxon), Thursday, 8 September 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

I find loads of stuff to buy, but then again, my jazz collection is relatively small (about 200 records). Both DBA and Groove Yard are a lot more fun and fruitful (for me, anyway) than the Amoeba jazz sections.

i'm still on the hunt for a weekly though!

Soda and Pop @ RX were both good nights musically but not too many folks would ever show up. i think one of them still happens, so you've at least got a bi-monthly there, tricky :)

hmmm. i am going to continue hunting though most things here do seem to occur on a monthly basis.

polyphonic, thanks so much. i went to DBA Brown & Groove Yard today (and saturn). DBA is having this super duper crazy sale where everything in the store was at least 50% off. all records $5 or under were a dollar and there were tons of 3/$.25. i left with a bunch of stuff i've been looking for for a while. i got 12 records for $3! also went to Groove Yard and bought a few records. they have a great jazz selection, but are kinda pricey.

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Sunday, 18 September 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

isolee was pretty great. i'd never been to the RX gallery/kontrol thing before. super-crowded, kinda swanky, good people-watching. it was funny watching a balding, mousy dude L-shaped over his laptop get action hero-caliber applause. he seemed pretty bashfully psyched about it all.

that really long song on we are monster is still my favorite.

i was surprised that he played a set where all of the tunes were so recognizable as i thought he would really warp and twist things. it was a great set though and the crowd ate it up. they were a little slow to warm up to him, but 20 minutes in it they seemed to loosen up and just go with it. sound was v good.

tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 18 September 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

he's verbally committed to the SBwNC concept. i developed it the first time i met him, when he went on a full-blown rant about the donnas. party ben, the mash-up dude at live 105, is another hot-button issue. the important thing for the show will be to insure he's always got a few arch-enemies. keep on his good side.

If they were from NYC they'd be all anyone on ILM would talk about. http://www.blackfictionband.com/, but the recordings really don't do them justice. I don't know whey they're playing again but I'll mention it here when I do.

As usual, I will get excited about both but probably won't attend either, and then complain a lot about how nothing ever happens in SF.

i missed calla, too bad, I hope they come back though; even though I'm not wild on their new album (or the last one) they're so good live.

upcoming: the clientele on November 12th. Also my band is playing the Hotel Utah on November 9th with our new rhythm section, if they actually learn any of our songs before then.

granted, it's from Pitchfork.. but still...

==================

American Analog Set to Break Up After Tour

Timothy Najmolhoda reports:
Sometimes it's hard to be the messenger, but as professional (albeit barely) reporters, it's our duty to inform you that in a mere six days, American Analog Set will begin their last tour ever. And once that finishes this December, the band will be officially "broken up", as they say in the business. Sucks, don't it?

Naturally our first question was "On good terms or bad terms?" Frontman Andrew Kenny says, "We're still friends and we still like making music together but we've all got other projects that we'd like to concentrate on for a while." Fair enough, but what exactly does he mean by projects? Well, guitarist Sean Ripple has a book coming out in 2006, Craig McCaffrey is working on some music of his own and focusing on some design work, and drummer Mark Smith plans to perfect his game at FIFA Soccer for the PS2. Meanwhile, Kenny himself is going to continue writing songs for a new project, and finish work on the next AmAnSet rarities compilation. But there is a silver lining to all of this. The band is bringing former Furry Thing Chris Michaels with them on the road to manage the boards. Michaels owns the Laboratory, where American Analog Set recorded their final album, so he's no stranger to working with these guys. As sad as saying goodbye can be, the band seems pretty geeked to get to work with this gentleman one last time.

Here are the dates - What's that, we've already posted most of these? Well, Mr. Smart Ass, it's their last friggin tour ever, so can the cynicism and just read them again. Jesus, would it kill you to show a little sensitivity?

wow, just found this... so stop the presses. turns out that even pitchfork can be wrong. imagine that. well, at least they admitted it:

---------------
American Analog Not Breaking Up After All

Amy Phillips reports:
Though it may seem hard to believe, the Pitchfork staff is human. And humans make mistakes. Sometimes we report things that are only half-true, and then we have to apologize and hang our heads in shame.

Right now is one of those times. Remember on Monday when we told you that American Analog Set will break up after their current tour? Well, they're not. They're only quitting touring for now. Here's the full statement from the band, as posted to the AmAnSet website:

"Is this the end of the American Analog Set?

No ... probably not. We're still friends and we still like making music together, but we've all got other projects that we'd like to concentrate on for a while. Sean's book comes out in early 2006. Lee has been busy with Parts & Labour in Austin. Craig has his own music and more design work than he can do right now. Kenny is working on songs for a new project and also putting songs together for the next AmAnSet singles/unreleased compilation. Mark has a grip of cigarettes to smoke and FIFA 2006 just came out for PS2 so...

But this is the last tour? Will we ever see the American Analog Set again?

[shaking magic 8-ball] ... It's possible. We may play again here and there, but this is the last time we will get INTO a van in August and get OUT of the van in December. This is the last full-on tour in support of an album. Coast to coast ... Europe ... Japan ... etc... So you should get out to the rock show.

Did you have a fight?

What? No. This? This is nothing ... I ... I fell down the stairs."

Quite a bunch of jokers, that American Analog Set.

Once again, we're sorry about the mix-up. Their tour kicks off tonight in Chicago; go see ‘em for what may be the last time for awhile:

knife (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 31 October 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

so, let's do a weekend wrap-up. who went to what? i did Diplo and American Analog Set. Both rockin and totally packed. sad that's the last i'll see of amanset :(

ken taylrr never her (ken taylrr), Monday, 31 October 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

I did Diplo/DJ Marlboro. Marlboro was great. Diplo pretty much sucked (although we left after 40 minutes or so--maybe he got "great.) The Rickshaw was crowded, but, at least up near the front where I was, the crowd was rude and annoying as fuck. Too many slack-jawed dipshits pushing up to see and then standing around for a couple of minutes and then pushing their way back out.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 31 October 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

i didn't go to hear magda....

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

I wish I could afford Rachel's tonight. It nearly flew under my radar anyway because it wasn't on 'The List' ... got to cross-reference with SFBG sometimes. Also, that Thuja show sounds terrific but I'm always out of town on the weekends.

Both times I've seen Cerberus Shoal have been fairly annoying, so I'm probably going to avoid that on Wednesday the 9th. I am however tempted by Animal Collective @ Great American Music Hall come Monday, Nov. 21. $18 isn't so bad, guess I should reserve tickets soon.

Dare (Dare), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

i did go to broadcast though and they were really good.

my three favorite ongoing series / venues right now:

the shows at recombinant media: ryoji ikeda, hecker, yasunao tone, trevor wishart, curtis roads, semiconductor

the godwaffle noise pancakes series, sundays @ noon at art sf, watching five noise bands while eating pancakes and hanging out with cool peoples

& especially every single performance by sf sound, they are just on fire. they perform their own pieces amid performances of robert ashley, gavin bryars, terry riley, john cage, gerard grisey, oliveros, lucier, kagel, webern, etc. and they make it all sound incredible.
