No complaints, really.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not a bad list at all, the top 50 at least. I couldn't be arsed to look through the 100-50 section though. And the blurb for the number 1+2 choice is horrible.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

it's too ILM ;)

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

redundant

ana (ana), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I was gonna say, it's a very ilm list.

Pretty great!

Hari, I'm working on it.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait.

Annie doesn't even sing 'truuuuly' in 'my heartbeat' does she?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha

listen to the song you love so much pitchfork.

maybe work out the lyrics a bit.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

bleargh
no Vitalic
ok list thogh

lemin (lemin), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

'Spastic and addictive, "Work It" somehow eschews pop's typically self-perpetuating habits and introduces a brand new aesthetic, a paradigm so weird and uncompromising that it just can't be reproduced.'

what is this shit? i know people work hard at it but for fuck's sake. i don't mind the list per se (well, maybe a bit) but the blurbs are so... boosterish. yes they're boosting stuff they like, but um that's no excuse. and i really don't like '99 problems' and everyone forgets 'got your money', though perhaps that was '99 stateside.

Miles Finch, Monday, 31 January 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

feel ma heardbeat
truuuuly to da beat

jummy, Monday, 31 January 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost
isn't that the point, though? pitchfork is allowed to try to convince us that songs they like are important - in fact, anyone is!

lemin (lemin), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, whether you buy it or not is a completely different question...

lemin (lemin), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like '99 problems' either--too much irritating testosterone for me. I am just not into this whole 'bitch!' thing.

But I like the list. Part of the Pitchfork M.O. is writing in a boosterish and evangelizing way. We are not really the audience for their boosterism on ILM, but that doesn't make it bad.

I also don't think "Maps" should be anywhere near the top 10.

mrjosh (mrjosh), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

haha electroclash "might still exist"

but it's a good list I guess. is it now officially ok to like pop? we all remember the rooty review.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

sometimes the best way of convincing people is not talking to them as if they've never heard a pop song before and that in fact pitchfork invented listening to pop music.

Miles Finch, Monday, 31 January 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree it's pretty ILM and I quite like it's selection (although "Get UR Freak On" should be top), but is Pitchfork a particularly American site? Surely Girls Aloud should be in there somewhere? The it would be truly ILMish.

Nick H (Nick H), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

those are no way the lyrics xxxxxpost.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Like aren't there way beter songs by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs? Obviously "Bang" is a lot better than "Maps," which is treacly, esp. that horrible video.

Miles, but lots of people actually don't listen to pop music. I never listen to the radio and I am a pretty normal person. (I think.)

mrjosh (mrjosh), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

also why on earth do they include some singles and have negative reviews????

like on "Forgot About Dre"

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

sometimes i do wish that lists would justify their inclusions of certain songs by saying "We all just kinda really really really liked this song"

but that would completely miss the point of music criticism in the first place

lemin (lemin), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

No Andreas Johnsson?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 31 January 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

mrjosh -- i don't mean 'pop music' as in girls aloud, but 'pop music' as in missy elliott, yeah yeah yeahs -- ie the bands featured. it's all pop music. pitchfork thinks it is mediating between it and us, which is silly. the 'unexpected' choices like annie provoke the most cringey blurbs.

Miles Finch, Monday, 31 January 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

why can't you guys just get over the fact that we invented listening to pop music

Nick Sylvester, Monday, 31 January 2005 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha!

I love ILM threads where the Pitchfork-bashers lose.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like '99 problems' either--too much irritating testosterone for me. I am just not into this whole 'bitch!' thing.

The beat is SO good though.

It'd be like if Hitler baked me a delicious cake. It's so yummy, but so evil!

On second thought, I'd be best not letting Hitler anywhere near my oven.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

This writeup is excruciating.

020: M.I.A.
"Galang"
[XL; 2004]

Her country sinking, Sri Lanka-to-London garage-hop/mix-tape It girl Maya Arulpragasam (aka M.I.A.) and her exuberant Slits-on-Missy octave-flip accrue a revolutionary dare-to-dance poignancy on Piracy Funds Terrorism, Vol. 1 and her official debut, the forthcoming Arular.

It already has a lot of competition, but "Galang" (and its accompanying graffiti-tron video) is her most instantly infectious moment, a pack of distorto soul-stir wrapped in steel-drum-cum-keyboard reggae rattle. And hey, instead of diffusing that joy by locking "Galang" (and the rest of her oeuvre) in the simplified human-interest carnival of the tsunami tragedy, try absorbing M.I.A.'s jubilant blaze-a-laze on its own terms. Yes, music-for-music's-sake is incredibly naive, but besides the obvious beats, wrapped inside the syllables of "Galang"'s tossed off doggerel, there's some truly soothing balm.

tdm (tubesocks), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Really, I don't get the whole Timberlake thing. Even in theory.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

there is a self consciousness there alright, I agree with Miles to an extent, which makes a change from the last week or so.

the Rooty review is now the stuff of internet lore though, the fact that they include 2 Jaxx singles from that record without mentioning it is a bit odd.

x-post, hahaha that MIA review is hilarious!

"instead of diffusing that joy by locking "Galang" (and the rest of her oeuvre) in the simplified human-interest carnival of the tsunami tragedy"

WHAT THE FUCK!!!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"Yeah!" is of course horribly low, but it's a good list on the whole.

deej., Monday, 31 January 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

my kylie blurb got a little bizzutchered.

:(

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

MIA's an It Girl!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, never mind, I'm not going to type out the whole list anymore -- I'd gotten from #1-#70, and then I had to restart my computer for some stupid reason, and I'm not typing it again.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

music-for-music's-sake is incredibly naive

war's not won yet, kids

besides the obvious beats

gnnnnnnnnhhhh

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I think every sentence of that MIA write-up makes my brain hurt.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

""Run Into Flowers" wrenches so much beauty from artificial sources it makes me want to cry"

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick S., I LOL'd at your "Hot in Herre" blurb.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked when he called "tessio" feta-cheesy.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Really, I don't get the whole Timberlake thing. Even in theory.

I don't want to be all "do you hate fun??" but I'm having trouble imagining how someone couldn't find at least one of JT's four singles from Justified catchy and engaging on some level, unless you're put off by his singing or something (which I don't mind but more finicky listeners [Dan Perry] might]. I mean, dude writes awesome bridges, for one.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i liked when he called "tessio" feta-cheesy.

An intertextual reference to "Visitor," right?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

haha yeah i caught that too! (re: feta cheesy)

deej., Monday, 31 January 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

my kylie blurb got a little bizzutchered.

:(

nevermind, i AIM complained, order is restored.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

dammit wait no, it's STILL wrong.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, pitchfork would be much better if it moved more towards the "Hot in Herre" writeup. i mean it's a good call!

lemin (lemin), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

thx, sp!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

ILM Trivia to bring it all home - there was a thread about B.O.B. on ILM's first day of existence.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

also why on earth do they include some singles and have negative reviews????

like on "Forgot About Dre"

As the writer of said blurb, Ronan, I'd like to know where you think I'm actually "negative" about the song. Of course, I'm reading it from the vantage point of knowing that I like the song, but if I'm negative about anything, it's my interpretation of Dre's attitude in the song, not the song itself.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't want to be all "do you hate fun??" but I'm having trouble imagining how someone couldn't find at least one of JT's four singles from Justified catchy and engaging on some level, unless you're put off by his singing or something (which I don't mind but more finicky listeners [Dan Perry] might].

Even Dan Perry likes "Rock Your Body" and "Senorita".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

just wrote and then trashed a big rant about how/why some tracks get picked over others all the time (Kylie was the example). never mind...

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

toxic has got to be the most overrated "i used to only listen to indie rock but now enjoy pop too" song ever.

Lovelace, Monday, 31 January 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Lovelace OTM; what year did "I'm A Slave 4 U" come out?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Toxic" is a good song, and I have never listened to "indie rock". Lovelace is not otm, and I can't even believe he/she just dismissed that Britney song like I said I almost tried to do in the blurb!

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"i used to only listen to indie rock but now enjoy pop too" song

every pop/r&b song on that list is one of those. I mean, mostly they're great songs (inc "Toxic") and I'm not complaining, but it does smack of jumping on a 'safe' bandwagon (hence lack of Girls Aloud - if Annie can be on twice despite not having broken America this isn't a valid excuse).

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"Toxic" is BAD! The verses suck, the chorus would be redeemable if she could sing, and the string sample is hella-annoying, even more annoying than J.Lo's sax loop in her new single. Also, it's too fast for the uncoordinated masses who love La Brit to dance to and when I'm on the dance floor I resent songs that cause elbows and knees to be flung about indiscriminately near my head, chest, thighs and ankles.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Dominique and Lovelace are both OTM, because "Toxic" is just overrated, period.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I can dance to "Toxic" perfectly well! (though I concede it's not 'natural' to dance to like "Boys" and even "Me Against the Music", and took a lot of practicing.) (the clue is in hip movements, not arm-waving.)

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Congratulations, Lex! You are among the dancefloor minority who is coordinated and has rhythm.

The Ghost of Dan Perry, Total Dance Nazi (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god Toxic revisionism! You guys are crazy shit's hype.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

My complaint w/the list isn't that it doesn't include stuff like Girls Aloud (which I don't think I've ever heard on a radio station here), it's that it doesn't include stuff like Brandy, Jennifer Lopez, Fat Joe, Nikka Costa, etc etc which, when they were (or are) hot, were all over US radio. I mean, how does "Hella Good" not even make the list??

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post

haha, and I like that J-Lo sax loop!

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"every pop/r&b song on that list is one of those. I mean, mostly they're great songs (inc "Toxic") and I'm not complaining, but it does smack of jumping on a 'safe' bandwagon (hence lack of Girls Aloud - if Annie can be on twice despite not having broken America this isn't a valid excuse)."

I know, but Toxic is the one song of them all(perhaps the only) that I loathe. My hate for Britney knows no boundaries even though I like the singles from her first two albums(yes, even "Sometimes").

I'll never understand the greatness of Girls Aloud. They just seem so average. Annie is class though, despite the "hip club people makes pop music for other hip club people" feel I get from it.

Lovelace, Monday, 31 January 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

just wrote and then trashed a big rant about how/why some tracks get picked over others all the time (Kylie was the example). never mind...

I am sort of amazed that Kylie track is apparently so much more well-liked than come into my world & love at first sight, but it was also a much bigger hit in the u.s. than those others, which probably partly explains it here.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha "revisionism"!

(xpost I like the sax loop too! I can see how it could be annoying, though.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the J-Lo sax loop too, AND can dance to it. The clue there is a kind of leg glide (though I think the uncoordinated masses would run a high risk of invoking Dan's Dance Nazi tendencies if they attempted this)

(xposts)

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost) (Well, "revisionist" on my part becasue I kept telling myself that "Toxic" was okay but overrated when the truth is I just can't stand the way she sings it, so any lyrical goodness within is completely crushed by the craptastic, godawfully subpar EVEN FOR BRITNEY performance.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

just wrote and then trashed a big rant about how/why some tracks get picked over others all the time (Kylie was the example). never mind...

Well, however it was you were going to say it, I'm with you.
(oh yeah, and that Kylie April fool thing. What a fucking wheeze)

David Merryweather (DavidM), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

it doesn't include stuff like Brandy, Jennifer Lopez, Fat Joe, Nikka Costa, etc etc which, when they were (or are) hot, were all over US radio. I mean, how does "Hella Good" not even make the list??

hella good split votes with the other no doubt/gwen tracks; brandy almost made it, that was probably around 110 or so.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll never understand the greatness of Girls Aloud. They just seem so average.

I think Girls Aloud make a lot more sense in a British context, I'd definitely like to see more non-British opinion on them though because I'm not sure exactly which of their qualities are responsible for this.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Britney holds a unique place in my heart because I a) don't think she's a good singer, b) don't find her particularly hot, yet (c) still manage to like some of her stuff. "Toxic" seems like a very well put-together song with a good hook (I like the string thing) and a good chorus.

Dominique (dleone), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I can dance to "Toxic" perfectly well! (the clue is in hip movements, not arm-waving.)

Exactly. Though I don't often mind a bit of flailing limbs. Dancefloor collisions can lead too allsorts (hopefully good sorts, o'course).

Yeah, J-Lo's newie is wicked.

David Merryweather (DavidM), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Pfork (critics in general, really) are sometimes bad about going for the kind of stuff Dom's talking about at the time, but then not slotting it into some kind of memorable ("rockist?") narrative that allows them to remember it later on; you'll get a bit of listening to the radio and digging on an R Kelly single, or something, but if it doesn't accrue any kind of album or Big Artist or left-field appeal (in the way Annie or Britney or M.I.A. might, respectively) it doesn't come to mind for the listmaking. But if I hadn't been a little busy and completely cowed by the prospect and had actually managed to vote, I'd certainly have had Brandy on there (maybe even "Full Moon" over "What About Us"), and quite possibly Nivea ("Laundromat"), and quite possibly Big Tymers and other favorites from the days when I, umm, had a car and listened to r&b radio in said car.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I think part of the trouble with this enterprise is that it rewards whatever is "emergent" at the precise time it is compiled, and punishes whatever proved unsustainable over the time it looks back on, and that tends to over-represent the recent past and revise the listening habits of four years ago. So you have two Annie songs but you don't have an Adult. tune or Miss Kittin and the Hacker's "Frank Sinatra", because people are embarassed about the recent past and over-eager to salute whatever's coming next (M.I.A. and Annie, I suppose, judging from the heavybreathing they induce). (An observation about groupthink as a whole, not a finger pointing at anybody in particular). In the words of Benjamin, there's nothing less erotic than our parents fashions, and similarly, there's nothing more awkward than the burnt out trends of the recent past.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

way too much rap

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah "Still Fly" isn't on here and i feel stupid bcuz i didn't vote for it on stylus.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan Perry & Lovelace OTM re: "Toxic." It's awful! It's like a DeLorean or something. Like tacky models of Futureworld from the late 70's.

I like the new JLo single a lot.

The "Hot in Herre" writeup was the best blurb in the whole thing. That song always makes me think of a bunch of law students trying to dance at happy hour. Maybe it's the logic.

daria g (daria g), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Drew reminds me.. how could they leave out "Frank Sinatra" or at least "Rippin Kittin"? d'oh! If they found room for Fischerspooner..

"Full Moon" is one of my favorite singles, I don't know why that and "Who Is She 2 U" are so underrated here.

daria g (daria g), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all about "Still Fly!" I have to quit not-voting in Pitchfork polls and then coming in on ILM threads about Pitchfork polls and claiming I would have voted for whatever's missing. (Tho I suppose anyone who saw anything I wrote for them in 2002 already knows I'd have voted for Adult., over and over again: "Skinlike!" "Nausea!" "Hand to Phone!") Anyway, the best song of the century-so-far remains Max Tundra's "Labial."

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"Who Is She 2 U" are so underrated here.

YES!

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Even Dan Perry likes "Rock Your Body" and "Senorita".

Dan Perry is wise.

"Toxic" is BAD!

Um, I take that back.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't believe I didn't vote for "Rippin Kitten". Totally forgot about it. Kind of like that one Dre single.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The stuff I forget about when I make a list of such size could make another list that would be comparable to whatever I listed between #30 and #100. Never mind the stuff I never heard.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that's why I have panic attacks and never manage to vote for stuff.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Augh, Mark, I can't believe you forgot! It made my top 20 and I was incredibly bummed that it just missed the list. I think Scott voted for it as well. Also, I have no idea what it is that people *don't* see in Brandy's "What About Us", my #3. I could write about that song for five straight years w/o sleep.

Ryan Pitchfork, Monday, 31 January 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm like that @ times - it's why I didn't submit any comments w/ my Pazz & Jop ballot - but, I figure, what I know is what I know, and there's only so much time I can dedicate to this stuff, so I err on the side of honesty. (In that light, maybe I should've submitted something to Chuck like: "Sorry, but I was in an 8-month fugue between February and October. That's how Snoop ended up @ #1. Send hate mail to Rolling Stone c/o Jann Wenner.")

xpost - I FORGOT "WHAT ABOUT US"!!!!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I second the big-ups to "What About Us". Furthermore, much as my flesh creeps to admit it, the omission of Madonna's "Music" strikes me as a Stalinist revision of history: that is a large fucking tune!

That said, there is a slanting towards "fizzy pop fun" as the definition of what a single is about which is unsurprising when a mass of people's lists get averaged together, but it is not the only measuring stick for what makes a song released by itself worth listening to. Current 93's "I have a special plan for this world" is a single 20 minute track, released as an EP so it counts, and it's just spoken word and drone and signal processing, but it manages to swallow up the entirety of the universe and then to swallow itself up in the process, it makes your heart race with queasy panic and makes everything around you seem terribly unreal. It is one of the loneliest and coldest things ever. In other words, it's an amazing single. But it's not doing what pop singles do. I would have liked to have seen a more open-ended approach to the idea of a single as "an isolated, self-sufficient musical statement" rather than the "hooky, catchy, chorus-oriented playlisted instant orgasm" definition of what a single is, personally. But one can, it seems, endlessly fret about the drowned and the saved when it comes to canon-building/busting. . . .

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - I FORGOT "WHAT ABOUT US"!!!!

I quit.

Ryan Pitchfork, Monday, 31 January 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll confess I haven't quite gotten the appeal of Girls Aloud myself either, they're perfectly fine but nothing otherworldly to me, their songs just seem a little too hysterical and manic and all-over-the-place at the expense of the actual hooks, too many bells and whistles, etc.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, "What About Us", "Music", "Hella Good" - I mean, I don't want to be in a half decade that doesn't remember those songs. "Music" is probably the best song Madonna released since "Vogue".

I mean where ARE the corny indie fuxXors gonna go? I almost feel bad for kids who are die-hard avant-rockists or whatever. They deserve a little clubhouse. I may not like Phish but I don't want them to turn into the Rapture.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

the albums list will be indier fuxier i'm sure.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

haha wow this all just dawned on me. I don't need Pitchfork to tell me Usher is good. I know that. I wanna know what corny indie shit I need to check out. That's the frikkin' niche it was serving for me. With a few exceptions (you, you and you) I ain't going for the writers.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

dj- I was a bit disappointed when your list had both freelance hellraiser and paape on it; I thought those would be our sort of relatively leftfield choices.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't need Pitchfork to tell me Usher is good.

haha scott you underestimated andrew's love for the paape track! (I still don't understand why he loves it more than Mit Dir! I guess M Mayer suffered from vote splitting. I hope Immer makes yr list)

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the transition currently in the works, Miccio, is that genuinely uber-corny indie-fuxxordom is kinda becoming the province of the masses, ya know, in kind of an OC / Death Cab / whatevery kind of way, leaving actual current-day indie-dom turning into some kind of Animal Collective to Annie line (plus actually caring about music with computers in) that kind of necessarily -- at least on a critical level -- needs to have Usher in its discourse. Ya know?

Also you clearly underestimate Pitchfork's clout: it was my early review of "Milkshake" that sent it racing up to the top of the US charts! Check the dates, dude.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, nabisco, but I don't go for the discourse. I go to see what underground bands are getting mad love. I'm being an ass, but I'm being honest as to why I check pitchfork every day. Every sentence about Timberlake is one less sentence for some anonymous band promoted by Fanatic or signed to Polyvinyl or whatever. And if I want indie fuxor as province of the masses I'll read SPIN.

BYOB, David!

Every sentence about Timberlake is one less sentence for some anonymous band promoted by Fanatic or signed to Polyvinyl or whatever.

perhaps, but anonymous bands aren't likely to be mentioned in the week's 'coverstory' article anyway: It's more like one less sentence for spoon or arcade fire or something) (although, actually both those artists made the list) (plus most of us prefer timberlake to polyvinyl bands!)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Quite a good list. But I'm missing Mary J. Blidge's "No More Drama"; "Home and Dry" by the Pet Shop Boys, "Music" and "Dog Days" by Matthew Dear

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, Miccio, do you actually read Pitchfork? First off, a "best singles of the past five years" list is nothing BUT discourse; you don't do a staff poll of the decade-so-far to see who the hot new underground bands are. Second of all, it's not as if Pitchfork runs copious news stories on Billboard charts or forthcoming J-Lo albums; and the level of attention to said material in album reviews is a mere fraction of the total! Reviewing a review of a Metallica album is just as duplicatory as reviewing Justin, but as of their last no one seemed surprised by that -- because there's an expectation that the audience cares. Which is the big thing here: I think there's an expectation that the way Pitchfork might talk about someone like Usher, and the kind of discussion he'd be situated in, would be something you weren't likely to get from the bulk of the places that are devoting text to the guy. (Same goes for Stylus or anyplace else of the kind.)

I mean, there's a level on which you're right -- and I assume Ryan's spent a fair amount of time thinking about audience in those terms as well -- but I think the past few years have demonstrated that ossifying around a particular core is the last thing Pitchfork needs to do. Never in music history has assuming a stable core been a good idea! The audience changes, the discourse changes, and there's a certain trust that doing your best with the latter will take care of everything with the former.

dahlen and weiner could co-host the game, since they're like best friends in the whole wide world and all. todd and ryan can make one of those awful mayor's bets-- if stylus wins, ryan has to listen to nothing but nellie mckay for a week; if pfm wins, todd has to endure the arcade fire.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I've still amazingly never heard "Toxic". It's not a typical trite and insipid direct-to-Clear-Channel confection?

Limited Edition Diet Coke with Lime: the Official Drink of the Stylus vs Pitchfork softball match

http://www.colawp.com/media/2/20040920-topic.jpg

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(this is an xpost with Nabisco)

Yeah, Anthony, I don't see the Weekly Feature article coming at the expense of a daily review, of like, Aloha or whoever -- esp. not with 100 album reviews a month. One thing that the Top 100 list does, though, is works at establishing a canon, and I actually might be interested in a more indie-centric list if it helps me navigate through all the shitty indie-rock that Pitchfork reviews throughout the week and gives me a few interesting songs in that genre to download. But maybe that's best served by something other than a Top 100 Singles of the Half-Decade poll.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Limited edition???? But I already rely on that stuff!

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I know this is a reasonable evolution and that indie is still discussed in copious amounts. It's just that its service to me was much more niche-oriented and if it just became "The Finest In Everything (from the perspective of indie heads)" it would, well, be SPIN.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually might be interested in a more indie-centric list if it helps me navigate through all the shitty indie-rock that Pitchfork reviews throughout the week and gives me a few interesting songs in that genre to download

yeah, that's what I'm getting at. And the album list will be undoubtedly more in this direction, I know.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Vegans, bring yr own meat substitutes, plz.

I'll handle all bloody goods because the last time I wasn't in charge of bringing the meat, a dopey friend - a vegan, FWIW - went out and bought FLANDER'S BURGERS. Upon arrival @ the campground, some other dude @ picnic exclaimed, "Dude, are those FLANDER'S BURGERS? They're awful!" Indeed, what was tucked inside the D.O.T. orange box were round patties the color of art-class clay that SMOLDERED the minute they were put on the grill. Like Laser Floyd amounts of smoke - fuck dry ice, use FLANDER'S. #3 ingrediant, after water & some other obvious thing = BEEF HEARTS. I was the only one to eat a FLANDER'S BURGER that day - it tasted innocuous, like death (if death came via a run-away hot dog cart). It's only because of some divine spirit that I'm able to tell you this story w/ some semblance of a digestive system remaining in my body. I didn't talk to my friend for nearly a month afterwards, and if I ever see him walk by the meat section of my local grocer, I'm taking him down before he does any more damage.

The lesson, BTW, is not "don't let a vegan buy meat products for a picnic"; it's "don't let my idiot friend buy meat products for a picnic". It goes w/out saying that he ain't invited.

So, in conclusion - BYOBoca.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 31 January 2005 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

As you can see from the calendar, the game is coming up this weekend. I'm sure you are as excited for it as I am, as our cities are rivals and have been for quite some time. Your confidence in your team is high, but rest assured, you will suffer humiliation when the sports team from my area defeats the sports team from your area.

On numerous occasions, you have expressed the conviction that your area's sports team will be victorious. I must admit that every time I hear you make this proclamation, I react with both laughter and disbelief. "Ha!" I say to myself with laughter. "What?!" I say to myself in disbelief. How could you believe that your sports team could beat my sports team? It is clear that yours is inferior in every way.

When the sporting contest begins, the players on your team will be treated as though they are inconsequential. It will be remarkably easy for my team to accumulate more points than yours. There are many reasons for this, starting with the inferior physical attributes of the players representing your area. Strength, speed, and agility are just three of the qualities that the players on the team from your area lack. The players representing my area, on the other hand, have these traits in abundance.

I would not be a bit surprised if the individuals on the team from your area were sexually attracted to members of their own gender. That is how ineffective they are on the field of battle.

Underscoring your team's inferiority is its choice of colors. It is ludicrous to believe that your team's colors inspire either respect or fear. Instead, they appear to have been chosen by someone who is colorblind or, perhaps, bereft of sight altogether. The colors for my team, on the other hand, are aesthetically pleasing when placed in proximity to one another. They are a superior color combination in every way.

While we are on the subject of aesthetics, let us compare the respective facilities in which our teams play. While my team's edifice is blessed with architectural splendor and the most modern of amenities, yours is a thoroughly unpleasant place in which to watch a sporting contest. I know of what I speak, for I once attended a game between our respective teams in your facility. Let's just say the experience left me wishing that my car was inoperable that day due to mechanical problems, rendering it impossible for me to get to your area to attend the game.

If you need another reason why the sporting franchise representing my area is superior, look no further than the supporters for the two sides. Not only are the supporters of the team from my region more spirited, but they are also more intelligent and of finer breeding than you and the rest of your ilk. In addition, the female supporters of the team from my area possess more attractive countenances and figures than yours. Some of the women from my side that I have observed could make a living by posing for pictures for major men's magazines. The women who cheer for your team, I'm afraid, are far too unattractive to do so.

One of the more pathetic aspects of the team from your area is the fact that only people in your immediate area possess an affinity for it. By means of contrast, the team from my area inspires loyalty and affection in individuals who live in many other geographic locations.

To illustrate this point, let me tell a brief story: Recently, I was on vacation in an area of the country far away from my own, and I saw many individuals wearing items of clothing that bore the insignia of my team. I approached one such individual and asked him if he originated from my area. He said no, explaining that he simply liked the team from my area and had for many years. Interestingly enough, during this trip, I saw no clothing or other paraphernalia bearing the insignia of your team.

Do you still doubt that the team from your area is inferior to the one from mine? Just look at our teams' respective histories. In the past, we have defeated you on any number of occasions. Granted, there were times when your team beat my team, but those were lucky flukes.

The day of the game will soon be at hand. And no matter how hard you pray to a higher power or how many foam accoutrements you wear in support of the team from your area, your team will be defeated. We will win and you will lose. This is your fate.

Prepare for humiliation. It shall be upon you at the designated hour.

I'm somewhat surprised at the low placement of Eminem singles overall. Nothing above #53, and if you'd told me three years ago that "The Real Slim Shady" would only rate #96 on a list like this, I'd be like, "Jeez, what happened, did Marshall rape somebody?"

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I will hunt you down, Dan Perry.

C0L1N B--KETT, Monday, 31 January 2005 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

(but hopefully after the groove does; I am very weak)

C0L1N B--KETT, Monday, 31 January 2005 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay! Oh wait, you're not going to buy me beer and pay off my mortgage when you find me, are you. Oh shit.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 January 2005 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ignition" will free you from such earthly concerns.

C0L1N B--KETT, Monday, 31 January 2005 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ignition" is by far the weakest of the 00s pop/r&b canon songs, yet it gets the most love! I mean it really is quite weak - "Toxic" may be obvious and overrated but at least it's still great.

"Snake" was the only R Kelly song from that year to be any good.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 January 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't imagine thinking "Snake" is better than "Ignition." John Darnielle's thread should be more than enough to convince ppl who think "Ingition" is just average that this is not the case.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

This list was fun to read. I have no problems with it.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ignition" is not average, "Ignition" is totally lame and annoying. "Snake" actually sounds as if it has some oomph, as well as that fantastic sinuous flute line and the bonkers 'like two gorillas in the jungle making looooove!!!' bit.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I like and respect John a lot, but no amount of cajoling/critical rhapsody would make me like "Ignition (Remix)" because I think it sucks dog balls.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

doom wuz robbed!

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess "Drop it Like It's Hot" came out too recently to make it on this, or do people just not rate it? It would have seemed like a shoo-in to me.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Would have preferred "Eple" or "Fight Test" or the New Extended Version of "Some Velvet Morning" myself but, hey, you can't have everything, right?

Yes "Ignition (Remix)" is awful. So are "Yeah" and "Work It" and "Driop It Like It's Hot." It's just like ILM's Rolling 2004/2005 Singles lists: there's way WAY too much mediocre hip-hop.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

if you'd told me three years ago that "The Real Slim Shady" would only rate #96 on a list like this, I'd be like, "Jeez, what happened, did Marshall rape somebody?"

No, but he did put out a completely GODAWFUL shitrecord that made us all never want to listen to him ever again and wonder why we ever liked the guy in the first place.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i've already made reservations for the belmont plateau baseball field here in philly. i've also invited will smith in character as "hitch" to get those single guys laid.

stylus will naturally be called the "stylii"

i've also asked mayor street to *actually* leave city hall to commemorate the event. i've scheduled it to fall between greek picnic and the fall rush events.

and it's kegs of yuengling, btw.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

and it's kegs of yuengling, btw.

B-but Jess doesn't write for either site.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

dude wtf yuengling is state collegian for water

therefore, WOOOOOO

miccio (miccio), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

nope, but stylus has a ton of pennsylvanians, and i think little nicky is from buxco, so it's on, right?

and we'll invite amy phillips, sara sherr.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

So but you should get, like, I dunno, Old Style or (if you're feeling fancy) Goose Island kegs for the Chicagoans.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Or maybe just PBR all 'round.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

amy and sara will be umps of course.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I so wanna watch that softball game. Hell, I'll umpire it! (n.b. I don't know shit about softball rules)

haha xpost

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 31 January 2005 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

am i "little nicky"? i'm from montco actually. belmont is good. that's where all the lax kids drank and bleacherbanged

Nick Sylvester, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes "Ignition (Remix)" is awful. So are "Yeah" and "Work It" and "Driop It Like It's Hot."

Okay, dude, stop the madness. Not everything by black people sucks.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Good to see Cam’ron's "Hey Ma" getting the canonization it deserves...

Pete Scholtes, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

mmm now i'm wondering if yuengling is easily obtained in NYC ....

lemin (lemin), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

yes it's easy availabel and probably one of da best cheap beers around
some places got good deals on pitchers

huptoo, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I was bothered by seeing Toxic, In Da Club and Lose Yourself, but I'm fine with the other 97 songs.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm somewhat surprised at the low placement of Eminem singles overall.

This is probably what I liked most about this list.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 1 February 2005 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, that and "Hey Ma."

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

that list could be a lot better itself i know. it's a work in progress. i basically want to have a top 100 that completely ignores the usual suspects but still features wall to wall excellence (hopefully not too much my personalised view which as it stands probably is rather too much)

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan Perry's Ghost is perched upon the coin of the realm, above.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I've only heard 7 tracks on your list, Steve! (Which may be the point, but still.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I'll give you seconds, J, on these (mostly the itals):

conzole - 14 zero zero x2

"Sk8er Boi" happened, too, didn't it?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe part of my fear of listmaking has to do with the fact that I couldn't feasibly come on a thread like this and be like "clearly Toulouse's 'Commuter Maquette' is the best thing ever, except maybe Movietone's 'Hydra,' and how could anyone not recognize these incontrovertible facts?"

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

That's what the liquor's for, N.

(That Toulouse track is from their 2nd album, on Grimsley, right?)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Tracks that I can hum (especially fantastic ones in bold):

michelle branch - everywhere
new order - crystal
bjork - it's in our hands
codec & flexor - crazy girls make my heart go boom
gus gus - david
space cowboy - I would die 4 u
truth hurts ft rakim - addictive
mc pitman - pitman says
audio bullys - the snow
moloko - familiar feeling
alcazar - sexual guarantee

brandy - what about us
n.e.r.d. - lapdance

joe logic - just a little bit lush
orbital - funny break (one's enough)
dmx - x gon give it to ya

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm surprised Beck's "Sexxlaws" got zero love from other pforkers (I had it in my top 10).

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

(Yeah, Dave, and I highly recommend that record. The first album was great, kind of a south-Chicago Kitchens of Distinction with timely Farfisa parts; after some member-replacement, the second one suddenly had them turning into some kind of Orange Juice post-punk dance-happy Josef K pop combo. I dunno. I think it got bad reviews because, well, for one thing it's on Grimsey, right, but also no one reviewed it until after the notion of "dancepunk" was on everyone's tongues, and so unfortunately I think everyone thought they were trying to be that but were just too wimpy and inept to pull it off correctly. Anyway it's a nice record, and while it has certain band-on-Grimsey qualities that keep it from seeming like a Massive Big Accomplishment, it's just kinda endlessly charming.)

(Movietone's The Blossom-Filled Streets, on the other hand, may actually be a Big Accomplishment.)

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I love New Points, New Lines...especially "Green Light District". I'm having difficulty obtaining The Way the City Stretches...I can't remember whether or not I've looked at GEMM to find it, either, but I'll check.

Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

sexxlaws was from like 1998 though.

f-a-b-o-l-o-u-s (adamwest), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck...it's not on GEMM. I found a CD copy of John Cale's Music for a New Society on GEMM and yet I can't find that?

Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, 99.

f-a-b-o-l-o-u-s (adamwest), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

NO ANDREW W.K. OMGWTF?!?!?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 3 February 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i made the beck mistake, that shit was my number one album on stylus. WHOOPS

also whoops: where's "apollo kids" by ghostface?

I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT 'WE DON'T CARE' BY AUDIO BULLYS
