I was taking "song" literally, not counting instrumentals (though "The Diamond Sea" may be a half-cheat). My list would be very different otherwise.
"Zoo Music Girl" rules. I should pull out the Birthday Party more often.
I think "Warsaw" may be my favourite Joy Division song. Otherwise, "Shadowplay", possibly.

Yeah, I'm not even trying to be objective. It's entirely a subjective list. When I heard "Love Train", I was in a certain place and I felt a certain way and the song just rushed into me and stuck somewhere, a joyful glue aneurysm waiting to burst and stick to everything. A different day and I'd have put "Are Friends Electric?" or "Ring my Bell" or, fuck, I don't know, Shannon's "Let the Music Play" or something. Or some Dusty. Or some Al Green. Or some OutKast. Or some Streets. Or Smiths. Or Yes. Or the last Avril single that, inexplicably, I really love (the one about nobody being home or something along those lines). Or whatever. Ha, it just goes on and on, this music addiction thing and sometimes I wonder if I'll be personally strong enough to keep carrying it forward...

VU - Sister Ray (to ensure it pisses off the neighbors)Clash - Death or Glory (hard to pick but wins out for convolving fucking with nuns)Replacements - Color Me Impressed (the best song on their best record)Wilco - Misunderstood (for the haters)Spaceshits - C'mon Let's Suicide (to up the guitar and lo-fi quotients a bit more, because I know that's what ILM likes best)
5 for 2005 - I absolutely cheated here, to check on dates and get song names right, in my perfect world these are the songs that'd be blarin' out of car windows on hot summer nights:
The Fevers - Bound To CryDemon's Claws - Blood On My FangsKing Khan & BBQ Show - Shake Real LowThe Ponys - FerociousKing Louie - I'm 13 and I'm Too Ugly To Live

Thanks! I thought this was the most unusual pick in my selection, given that somehow most KC fans don't think much of the entire Islands album. A couple of years ago, the song made their way onto their setlists (I think thanks to current singer Jakko Jakszyk). I still can't believe that I heard it live last year.

They're not engraving the 5 on your tombstone, it's just an internet message board! I just picked 5 off the top of my head, from different eras of my listening life, that I thought had a great combination of melody and lyric. I could pick another 50, the list is not definitive.

AARGH! Sometimes I shouldn't post here while I should be working instead. I just realised that I managed to make an error in one of my supposedly-five-favourite-songs-of-all-times picks. It's as if my brain did some sort of erroneous auto-correct after typing 'the Co':The Paul Simon selection should be 'The Cool, Cool River'While I do like The Coast, there's five or six songs from the Rhythm Of The Saints album that I would rank above it. Over the last few years, I got increasingly fascinated with The Cool, Cool River.
