I have an enormous amount of 2005 music that I haven't even listened to yet. I'm greatly interested in seeing how this differs from my end-of-year list, however.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Friday, 25 March 2005 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

It’s definitely too early.

Autechre
Beck
Cam’ron
Coachwhips
Jimmy Chamberlin Complex
Regina Spektor
Half-Handed Cloud
Graham Coxon
Mary Timony
50 Foot Wave
Pit er Pat

There’s so much potentially bomb-ass stuff on the horizon though that most of these won’t make it to the ’05 P&J ballot.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 25 March 2005 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Fannypack, See You Next Tuesday
The Game, Documentary
A Frames, Black Forest
LCD Soundsystem, LCD Soundsystem
MIA, Arular
Sleater-Kinney, The Woods
High on Fire, Blessed Black Wings
John Doe, Forever Hasn't Happened Yet
DJ Buddha, Caribbean Connection Volume 2.5
Mu, Out of Breach
Deana Carter, Story of My Life

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Friday, 25 March 2005 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't really get a chance to sit down and listen to "Purple Haze" until after I'd compiled my 2004 list, but it probably deserves consideration for the top 10 if I decide to count it. Def Jam did me no favors by burying it in December. I did the same thing last year with Immortal Technique's "Revolutionary Vol. 2," a late-2003 release, so I'll probably give it some love.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Friday, 25 March 2005 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Electric Six and Spoon are the only sure-shots in my top 20 this year I've heard so far.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 25 March 2005 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course it's far too early for this kind of nonsense... but the number one position is already nailed on.

1. Bloc Party - Silent Alarm

David Merryweather (DavidM), Friday, 25 March 2005 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

A Frames, Black Forest
Andrew Bird, ... & The Mysterious Production of Eggs

Sleater-Kinney, The Woods
Spoon, Gimme Fiction
Mary Timony, Ex Hex

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 25 March 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I can do 11 singles though. Some of them came out in 2004 but unlike albums they don't have a little copywright thing on the back of them to remind me.

1. Kelly Clarkson, "Since U Been Gone"
2. Killers, "Mr. Brightside"
3. Trick Daddy feat. Ludacris, Cee-Lo & Lil' Kim, "Sugar"
4. Pitbull feat. Lil Jon, "Toma"
5. M83, "Don't Save Us From Flames"
6. Ludacris, "Get Back"
7. Bowling For Soup, "Almost"
8. Akon, "Lonely"
9. LCD Soundsystem, "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House"
10. Avril Lavigne, "Nobody's Home"
11. Keane, "Somewhere Only We Know"

miccio (miccio), Friday, 25 March 2005 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe they do have copywrights on the CD singles at the mall or something, but not in the radio/video/net/ether in which singles live for me.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 25 March 2005 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

So far, High On Fire and Supagroup.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 25 March 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't make a list until I've heard the new SOAD, Xiu Xiu, and Super Furries, but Bloc Party, Andrew Bird and Sleater-Kinney are pretty safe bets.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Friday, 25 March 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It's always too early for top 10 lists, and I'm still catching up with 2004, but here's ten 2005 things I've been loving so far...

1. Eluvium, "Talk Amongst the Trees"
2. Jason Anderson, "The Wreath"
3. The Capstan Shafts, "Demon Dog of the American Park Service"
4. The Perceptionists, "Black Dialogue"
5. Aarktica, "Bleeding Light"
6. Robert Pollard, "Zoom" 7"
7. Winter Vacation, "The Netherlands, 1980"
8. The Casting Couch, "5 Songs" EP
9. The Cars Are the Stars, "Fragments"
10. Momus, "Otto Spooky"

I'm probably forgetting some of the best stuff, I need all my CDs in front of me

daveheaton, Friday, 25 March 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

xhuxk, Friday, 25 March 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

1) Josh Rouse : Nashville

2) Brendan Benson : The Alternative To Love

3) Ed Harcourt : Strangers

4) LCD Soundsystem : LCD Soundsystem

5) Carla Bruni : Quelqu'un M'a Dit

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 25 March 2005 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked EP bunches but couldn't bring myself to put it on my list, knowing that the double album will probably demolish it.

David R., great minds think alike! (to some extent)

xhuxk, Friday, 25 March 2005 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The order of the first 7 could change at any minute, they're all wonderful and all could contend for the end-of-year list.

01 Fiery Furnaces – EP
02 Beck – Guero
03 M.I.A. – Arular
04 Antony and the Johnsons – I Am a Bird Now
05 Out Hud – Let Us Never Speak of It Again
06 The Decemberists – Picaresque
07 Sleater-Kinney – The Woods
08 Hamasaki Ayumi – My Story
09 The National – Alligator
10 Emma – Free Me
11 Dalek – Absence

Bloc Party, Caribou, Buck 65, and Magnolia Electric Co. could all make it on there too.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Friday, 25 March 2005 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Not a whole lot heard or liked so far, but the short list:

Shooter Jennings
Kasabian
Mastodon
Beck
QOTSA (sorta)
Sage Francis (sorta)
Sharon Jones and Dap-Kings (tho that may be last year)
M.I.A.

Have some stuff to chase down and get around to, for sure.

Chris O., Friday, 25 March 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Three favorites so far:

Stars Set Yourself On Fire
Perceptionists Black Dialogue
Low The Great Destroyer

asl, Friday, 25 March 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

1) M.I.A. - Arular
2) The Hold Steady - Separation Sunday
3) LCD Soundsystem - s/t
4) v/a - Run the Road
5) Edan - Beauty and the Beat
6) Vitalic - OK Cowboy
7) Beck - Guero
8) Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings - Naturally
9) Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
10) Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze
11) Brooke Valentine - Chain Letter

Gotta hear the Mannie Fresh, Sleater-Kinney (who I have traditionally not been into but have been informed have taken a Comets on Fire sorta route), and the inevitable MF Doom album, wherever it may originate from. And this doesn't count potential rereleases (Anniemal; Bright Like Neon Love).

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Friday, 25 March 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh dammit, the Mannie gets the MTA2 curse by being released late late late Dec. '04 so it might not count. And why is everyone who's sharing it on slsk (a) dumping it in a single folder without track numbers and (b) has a username that follows the formula [Firstname][3-digit number]? There's seriously like 30 people named things like Nathan868 and Julia147 and Isaiah808 (that is going to be my Miami Bass superproducer pseudonym).

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Friday, 25 March 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Anthony and the Johnsons - I am a bird now

The rest, ask me in December.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Friday, 25 March 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

8.Antony & The Johnsons - I Am a Bird Now
9.Prefuse 73 - Surrounded by Silence
10.Caribou - The Milk of Human Kindness

SK's "The Woods" sounds great but I haven't listened to it enough, same for Sharon Jones, Four Tet, 13+God and Animal Collective/Vashti Bunyan. Also I think it's worth mentioning Losta and Safe was fairly dissapointing.

jmeister (jmeister), Friday, 25 March 2005 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

and 11. Fiery Furnaces - EP

jmeister (jmeister), Friday, 25 March 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Is "Still Tippin" from this year?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 25 March 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Last year, I'm pretty sure that the first "Best Of 2005" thread was started in early March ... so compared to last year, this thread is a little late, not a little early!

Top Ten albums, but I won't rank them yet.

M83 -- Before the Dawn Heals Us
Rhythm and Sound -- See Mi Yah
Low -- The Great Destroyer
New Order -- Waiting For the Sirens Call
Markus Guentner -- 1981
Caribou -- The Milk of Human Kindness
Roots Manuva -- Awfully Deep
A Silver Mt Zion -- Horses in the Sky
Polmo Polpo -- Kiss Me Again and Again (an EP)
and what the hell, Daft Punk -- Human After All

I'm excited about the new Xiu Xiu -- this is the first time since 1995 (Blur) that the band responsible for my top album of the year has come back the next year with a new album with which to defend their crown.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 25 March 2005 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

this is the first time since 1995 (Blur) that the band responsible for my top album of the year has come back the next year with a new album with which to defend their crown.

This is the reason I patiently await the new Delays record.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 25 March 2005 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Is "Still Tippin" from this year?

Sort of. Released in '04 but didn't get poppular until '05. Debuted on the top 100 two weeks ago, I believe.

Mr. Snrub, the Guy Called Gerald album isn't so bad!

It's certainly better than Arular though, I'll grant you that.

Awesome list. I still can't believe how good those Cassidy and U2 songs are.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 25 March 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I couldn't even get through it (and I loved tons of his earlier stuff!). When that absolutely GODAWFUL song with the stupid poetry came on I was just like "Oh fuck this!"

The poetry song didn't bother me so much, but I tend to ignore lyrics most of the time. I can convince myself that the poem is an extended piece of found sound and then I can easily let it slip into the background.

His attempts at downtempo/chillout house are skippable, but everything else on the album is quite good.l

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 25 March 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep forgetting that Rachid Taha can be counted as 2005, that obv needs to be on my list tout suite

Also the Bose, the Forgotten Hero soundtrack is better than Kisna, and I want Motion Trio on there too

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 28 March 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I get a #11. That'd be Miranda Lambert Kerosene (prob'ly higher; I've only listened to half of it so far).

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Monday, 28 March 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I won't vote for the Spoonie Gee, since I don't normally vote for best-ofs, but for what it's worth, at his best he's the best rapper ever.

But weirdly, they use the B-side rather than the A of "Spoonin' Rap," which on its A-side is the best rap song ever; it still sounds great on the B, but the lyrics aren't nearly as emotionally complicated.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Monday, 28 March 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't listened to that much, but:

Patrick Wolf - Wind In The Wires
Vitalic - OK Cowboy
John Moore - Half Awake
LCD Soundsystem
New Order - Waiting For The Sirens' Call
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Optimo - How To Kill The DJ 2

MIA and Daft Punk may be the next two.

Also, That "I Kill Everything I Fuck" cover is total genius.

daria g (daria g), Monday, 28 March 2005 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Stuff that I'm pretty sure will eventually make the list that I won't actually make for 2005:

Low - Great Destroyer
The Evens - s/t
Matt Sweeney and Bonnie Prince Billy - Superwolf
A Frames - Black Forest
STNNNG - Dignified Sissy
Rank Strangers - Chop Chop (ep)
The Seawhores record that never seems to actually come out
The Belles of Skin City record that never seems to come out
Mars Volta - Frances the Mute*
T.I. - Urban Legend
Camron - Purple Haze

*that's what I'm saying TODAY...it could eventually make my fictional worst of the year list (which I also won't actually make)....I really can't get a handle on how I feel about Mars Volta

M@tt - I feel you on Mars Volta. I can't imagine it being in my best of, but I really can't figure out whether it's a kind of inscrutable genius or godawful. I think I've settled on the idea that the lyrics are horseshit, though.

southern lights, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm, I don't know if I have eleven yet per se but top of the list:

New Order by a long goddamn shot
Daft Punk

Then in a fairly undifferentiated-but-all-good heap:
Low
MIA
M83
High on Fire
Bloc Party

While on the reissue tip:

And up and coming but I have strong faith it will be so:

The Mountain Goats

OK, I take back the Edan nomination (darn pesky "lyrics") and put Mannie in instead because the last week of 2004 is 2005 enough and I am going to start using the phrase "fuck side of the menu" in casual conversation.

This year's "best albums so far" list kind of depresses me. Final Fantasy, Smog and Okkervil River. After that, well, the usual, and none of which with incredible enthusiasm.

Songs, though (!!!)

1. Amerie - "One Thing"
2. Kelly Clarkson - "Since U Been Gone"
3. Okkervil River - "For Real"
4. LCD Soundsystem - "Daft Punk is Playing at My House"
5. Smog - "The Well"
6. Sufjan Stevens - "Casimir Pulaski Day"
7. Imogen Heap - "Hide and Seek"
8. Wolf Parade/Sunset Rubdown - "I'll Believe in Anything"
9. MIA - "Hombre"
10. Spoon - "Sister Jack"
11. Hangedup - "Kling Klang"
12. Pitbull - "Toma"
13. Herman Dune - "Not on Top"
14. Andrew Bird - "Fake Palindromes"
15. Iron and Wine - "Evening On The Ground"

At the end of the day, there will likely be some Kano. And of course, way more unexpected mega-awesomeness.

Sean M (Sean M), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

1. Trick Daddy feat. Ludacris & Cee-Lo, "Sugar"

5. Natalie, "Goin' Crazy"

7. Pitbull feat. Lil Jon, "Toma"
8. And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, "Worlds Apart"
9. R. Kelly, "Sex In The Kitchen"
10. Keane, "Somewhere Only We Know"
11. Akon, "Lonely"

miccio (miccio), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

I don't have 11 yet. Some of the obvious ones will probably make the final cut (M.I.A., S-K, Run the Road). I really like this best-of Daddy Yankee mixtape, but I suppose that's not technically eligible since none of the songs are from this year. The Shakira album is nice, but probably won't stand up to a best-of list; the Annie album ditto.

On the borderline (i.e. I hope I hear things I like more before the end of the year): Fannypack, White Stripes, Mannie Fresh, Mike Jones. I have high hopes for Missy, based on the singles. I'm still waiting to hear a great country or hip-hop album.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 27 June 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Actually I may change my mind on the Kano album (I've only listened to it and the Lethal B album once--the jury is out on the latter too although the production is a zillion times better.) Right now it seems pretty underwhelming.

Hey Frank, what do you think of Lindsay Lohan's "First"? It's sort of my "La La" surrogate cuz I prefer the sentiment and it has the same wonky disco metal vibe, not to mention practically the same chorus. The only thing I prefer about "La La" is those big Ministry drums at the beginning.

Hey Frank, what do you think of Lindsay Lohan's "First"? It's sort of my "La La" surrogate cuz I prefer the sentiment

So Anthony, you sentimentally prefer "I want to come first" to "I like it better when it hurts"?

"La La" holds together better as a song, though I don't know yet how to explain why. Also, I prefer the enticing brrr (or is it a grrr) that Ashlee puts in her voice.

But on to more socially significant topics, I'm with the ILX majority in preferring Lindsay's looks back when she had more meat on her.

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

By the way, if No Lay's "Unorthadox Daughter" (f. Unorthodox Spelling) is considered a 2005 (or late 2004) single, it's got a shot at my list. I think I like it even more than "Cha Ching."

Frank Kogan (Frank Kogan), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Since 'Rumours', it really seems as if La Lohan's pursuing a bizarre strategy of releasing the filler off her album as singles.

I think the spelling of 'Unortho/adox Daughter' might be a typo in the RTR booklet? It's named after her crew and they spell their name Unorthodox. But it's magnificent nonetheless.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Everybody gets mad when I do this sort of thing, and I dont really care but I thought I'd point it out anyway - not only was "Bring Em Out" released back in fall of 04, but it peaked on the charts in '04 too. I mean, Still Tippin may have been out longer but at least it peaked in '05 (although I still consider it '04 on my list)

Haha, "L.A.M.B" counts as 2005 by the rules Stylus uses for "...of the year 2005" (last week in November 2004-third week in November 2005". I believe PFM's year ends start a week earlier, thus meaning it was 2004 for them.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

If I was counting Mannie Fresh he'd be #8, but I'm a real stickler about this copywright date shit.

fe zaffe, I'd be interested to hear some of your thoughts about this!
Just received it today. Very good in parts, but also, frustrating.

fandango (fandango), Thursday, 30 June 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

I really should replace Freeform Five with Lemon Jelly, since comps and mixes never really count in my albums list.

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Friday, 1 July 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

too early for me.

but right now I'm inclined toward Deana Carter, Dierks Bentley, Reckless Kelly from the country side; Mannie Fresh; Mars Volta;
Elizabeth McQueen's pub-rock collection; maybe the Eels, though that one is kind of iffy; Beck's album I like but I'll probably change my mind; ditto Bobby Pinson's latest, which I like more and more; Annie, which isn't consistently great but which I find really charming, so far; and I'm awfully glad to see the Everly Brothers's classic long-OP "Two Yanks in England" (pretty canonical stuff for me and Sharon) has been reissued. And the Jack Nitzsche collection of productions, too.

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Saturday, 2 July 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Actually, VNV Nation should probably replace Rhapsody on my albums. I'm trying to figure out whether slow boring electro is better than slow boring narration by Christopher Lee.

(Anyway, Echu Mingua has an old French DJ doing scratching circa 1982, so hip-hop is covered there.)

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 2 October 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

see the last dozen big-and-richedly obsessive-compulsive posts or so by me (and some earlier ones by me and edd hurt) here:

Rolling 2005 Country Thread

also, eyeballing my list, i'm thinking that, were the year and/or world to end today, i'd probably give 5 p&j points each to rod lee and the sirens, and leave mannie and jeezy pointless, since they'd both get some from other people. that's just the kinda guy i am (when it comes to 5-pointers, anyway.)

xhuxk, Sunday, 2 October 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

damn, someone should publish that rolling 2005 country thread as a book. or maybe as a 30,000-word feature in the next music issue of vanity fair.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Sunday, 2 October 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I finally heard this the other day, I was in a record store and I kept hearing what I thought was garbled Association records with Byrds guitar licks...something wrong with the sound in this place?? But I kinda liked it.

I dunno, it's going to be a tough year. I don't know what I think about Hold Steady or New Pornographers at this point, I like both of them far more than I did initially...but...Deana Carter still feels fresh to me. Mannie and Kayne I still like a lot. Big and Rich actually has been in my changer for a long time and damned if I don't like it more and more, actually more than their first album. Ditto Seu Jorge's record if only for his great cover of "Chatterton" and the song about silicone breast implants, it feels just so timely to me. And I love the Fast n Bulbous Beefheart album, but right now I have been listening to the James Carter Pavement thing and damned if maybe that one is better than the Beefheart. I also feel like the reissue of my beloved Everly Brothers' Warner LP "Two Yanks in England" merits a vote, a wasted vote or three or five, but that's just such a great record. I'm never gonna get Antony and the Johnsons, either, despite many, many efforts to get into it and very many indignant e-mails from my all-purpose man in L.A., David Scott, upon whom I depend on for insight into things like that--usually I come around since he's a man of taste, but...and in country, besides Deana and Big and, nothing I've heard really sustains as an album, altho I halfway think that Dwight Yoakam's new one is the most *accomplished yet weird* country record of the year, in other words it's the one besides Deana and Big and that I have enjoyed the most yet have so many misgivings about as both a human being and as a music fan.
