jody when i started my list you were on it with a bullet and an 'oh yeah.' also included were r.s. la rue, don a, scott s, edd h, stormy davis, julio d, philip s, geeta d, danandned, gov't al (going record shopping with that dude in baltimore was hilarious, i was like 'ooh look is this new' and he was like 'yeah i've had that for weeks, it's okay"), tim f, and so many others

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 28 March 2005 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and i want to ransack martin s's r&b stax. oh and anthony easton.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 28 March 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i honestly cannot believe how much i'm getting namechecked here!

I admit I wish I was more. (Ridiculous of me to be so sensitive on the point but still!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 March 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps it's because people have preconceptions based `pon fervent proclmations you have made about your favorite artists (`tis an albatross I certainly wear), which is why I started this thread:

POX: Ten Albums in your Collection that would Probably Surprise your fellow ILM'r

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 28 March 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

If you guys had any idea....

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Monday, 28 March 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I have enough trouble going through my own music that I have bought/downloaded/whatever before I can even consider another person's collection....

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 28 March 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i have the least impressive, least unusual collection on ILM (only about 200 albums anyway if that) - anyway:

stirmonster
frenchbloke
marcello
dave q
stelfox
mike taylor
omar
tim f
tim h
matos

Sven Bastard (blueski), Monday, 28 March 2005 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorite slsk experience was talking with a dude in Israel who's a New Orleans brass band freak. He loves the music but can't get any of the records except at great expense, and here I am the one guy online with every single record, a ton of bootlegs, etc. It was the kind of ego validation that you fantasize about.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 28 March 2005 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Dan, you'll have your chance when you visit our frozen tundra...I've crossed the 2000 mark on CD's. Because I am profoundly and deeply disturbed, I think.

The LP's are another sickness entirely.

John Justen (johnjusten), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

thankee, alex -- i think that there's considerable overlap in our collections, though. mine has little less killing joke and cop shoot cop, and little more jay-z and fiddy cent though!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

right back atcha, Milton

Also:
julio
sundar
Tim Finney
Alex in NYC
RS
Andy K
george gossett

and then it's all a blur

I think the reason Ned's collection isn't showing up in more of these lists is we're all afraid we'd die from heart attacks when confronted with the immensity of it all.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

da raggettstacks!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why there's a little box after RS's name in my list.

(Probably something to do with my typing "Rockist Scientist" out of habit and having to delete most of it.)

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

with raggetstacks i imagine wandering down vast corridors all arranged in dewey with little amg star ratings

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ferlin Husky.

What am I at now? Six?

John Justen (johnjusten), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

with raggetstacks i imagine wandering down vast corridors all arranged in dewey with little amg star ratings

It's an option.

(The scary thing is I've been trying to reduce the Raggettstacks as such and it's like NOTHING changes. All I've done is get CDs off the floor!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

oh wow! thanks for mentioning me, dudes! my collection is not very massive!

my list (partial):

everyone who mentioned me, +

jess (i'm guessing most of what he has is mp3 format, but i want it all anyway)
douglas (every great band you've never heard, + every james brown release ever)
matos (esp. for cdr 700 gos!, african music, & every prince tune ever)
andy k (obscure post-punk + disco + minimal techno/microhouse)
stirmonster (for wholesale ransacking of everything in the optimo vaults)
ronan (cutting edge electro-house tunes)
tim finney (see above, + his 2step/garage collection, + dancehall + pop)
paul sci-fi soul (all-around magnificently curated record collection...mighty)
gareth (fill in gaps on '90s rave knowledge, '60s sunshine pop, and music for plants)
stelfox (dancehall)
jbr (catch up on weird psychedelia...also disco box sets galore!)
sherburne (ooh record envy, i could write pages about this one)
drew daniel (obv.)
mike taylor (fill in gaps on detroit techno knowledge..313)
selzer (esp. for obscuro post-punk acts, italodisco)
vahid (like a walking discogs, this guy always astounds me)
kogan
chuck
daddino
nath (40 copies of 'no new york')
hstencil
alex in nyc (catch up on old-skool punk)

scott seward
dominique leone (noize, japanese bands)
marcello
trife
mark s
sundar
woebot (i could probably spend ten days just gawking at the album covers...mighty)

and a ton more....let me put my thinking cap on

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

As for me, everybody's. Seriously, everybody. I want everything.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd happily kill you all if it meant I got yer stacks o' crap

(x-post!)

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

how soon they forget

the man who gave you the CDR Go! concept for fuck's sake (natepatrin), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

how soon you remind (p.s. thank u for swamp dogg)

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't go so far as to kill, but merely to note that technology has improved to the point where it is now possible that I could, with a little investment of money into the right hard drive, be able to store everything everyone has in their collections/computers and call it up as desired.

And I would like that. I would even want the stuff I hate so that way I could go back easily and judge if anything changed in my opinion. So I would want everything.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

replace kill with "let you all die"

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the reason i never listed nate is coz i have quite a few of his fucking amazing cdr700s which means i have like 60 hours of his collection already. not that i wouldn't want to hear more!

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i never listed nate cos i already have a pile of his fucking amazing cdr700s - maybe 60 hours worth of his collection. not that i'd say no to hearing more!

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:06 (twenty-one years ago)

mine has little less killing joke and cop shoot cop, and little more jay-z and fiddy cent though!

Nothing that a gift certificate, a hammer, some lighter fluid and a couple of matches couldn't change.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

fcking computer.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i am comfortable with my own collection and interests, thnx

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

WAAAH!

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd like tapes of kogan listening to his own collection and talking about it. same goes for at least half the people on this thread come to think of it

jones (actual), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure their collections are better and more interesting than yours (yes, even Calum's).
Wow, whats with all the hostility, mr complete random stranger?

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

when're they going to market music cds with commentaries, eh? that'd be fucking dismal.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, I came off more bitter than I meant to, didn't I? (aka my usual M.O.)

My own nominees: Matos, Blount (who if his slsk folder is any indication has LOTS of interesting novelty stuff), JBR, Daddino, mark s, nickalicious (I fear no hippie), Ronan (noisy board disagreements re: American arrogance notwithstanding).

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan S.
Sundar
Drew D.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

That's not ten. So throw in Scott Seward, Chuck Eddy and Elvis Telecom.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

blount has novelty stuff?

gimme a hint.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

when're they going to market music cds with commentaries, eh? that'd be fucking dismal.

(*guitarist builds up steam*)
"He's going for it ladies and gentlemen..."
(*a key change and the addition of the horn section!*)
"He Shooots!..."
(*Big Creshendo!*)
"He Scorrrreeees!"

"Well thats about it for this album, sports fans! With just 0.01 left on the digital readout, #32, center Van Halen came out of nowhere and delivered a decisive guitar solo and won the playoffs...!"

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

(whathisname from xtc is already doing this i believe)

jones (actual), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

That's not ten. So throw in Scott Seward, Chuck Eddy and Elvis Telecom.

Nah (sorry.)

I'll go for

Nate P.
Ned
SteveM.

That's it, really.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

does that mean you don't want to hear my album of german schoolchildren singing negro spirituals live in japan, jay vee? it's a grower!

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha! I meant my list wasn't ten.

Last I checked, Blount has Sesame Street Fever. Among other things.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post) Really, Scott? WOW.

OK: + Scott!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to hear the collection of every ILM poster than hasn't been mentioned here yet.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I am flattered to be namechecked by Sourpuss, who'd definitely be high on mine. dunno if I wanna make a top 10, though, just because it'd be full of people I'm obviously already cool with and would probably neglect people whose collections I'd be totally geeked to have access to but I don't quite have a handle on what the scope of their tastes are.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i forgot why i was here. mainly to say: El Sabor!!!! And Stormy. And lots of others too. But i would love to magically inherit their two collections after they magically fell down elevator shafts.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and definitely add Seward to my list because he probably has a bunch of old school Baltimore club from before my time.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like to hear the collection of every ILM poster than hasn't been mentioned here yet.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned
Alex in NYC

and that should be enough... :-)

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

John J, new poster and longtime friend of mine, probably has just as large a collection as Ned and Alex.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not the size of your collection, it's the quality of the content.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not the size, it's how you use it.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

John's collection is very likely to be the umbrella that bridges Ned and you (with added Mike Patton side projects everywhere).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

At the end of the day, I don't think there's a single poster on ILM whose collection I wouldn't curiously rumage through. I'm always keen to see/hear what people are into. The problems arise when I spot too many Simple Plan albums (or _________ [fill in name of unworthy artist here]) and the critiscism starts to flow like a mighty wave of lava.

Does anyone else have trouble not peaking at what other people in line with you at disc shops are buying (for those of you who don't solely download and/or acquire music online)?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

peaking?

i am the modren man (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, you know....basically craning your neck to see what it is your fellow customer is clutching.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I am imagining Alex in line at the record store three people back from the register, getting more and more frantic until he shouts "DAMN, I'M PEAKING!" and drops into a faint, CDs and vinyl spilling everywhere.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Peaking while looking at what they're clutching? Are you sure it's the record store you're talking about, Big Al?

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

anyhoo, i can't believe i forgot arthur!!!

i am the modren man (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, you know....basically craning your neck to see what it is your fellow customer is clutching.

Oh yeah. And then thinking "moron alert" after spotting the Seal/Good Charlotte/Diana Krall CD on his/her hands. Been there.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, Alex, were you ever in Amoeba records at the same time as Gear?

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Is peek spelled with two e's? Christ, I'm an idiot.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

We still love you!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Pardon me, Peking your honorable records.

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

anyhoo, i can't believe i forgot arthur!!!

I forgot Arthur too. That's why I hate making lists, I forget things and leave a lot of people out.

Leon Bluth (Ex Leon), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

My collection has been winnowed down in the last few years, since I've moved like twenty times since 2000. Lugging around those albums is a chore. Come over, I do have a good set of those crackly original King LPs on James Brown...the Christmas albums..."Show of Tomorrow"..."Tours the USA"...Freddie Hart on Kapp...Kay Huntington's "What's Wrong With Our World," which I can't quit listening to, it's so awful...love to all youse who namechcked me...

anyway, I am curious about the Geir collection, obviously.
Ken L.
Chuck
Myonga
Dan
Ned R.
Martin Skidmore's soul collection...
o. nate
Fritz W.

Alex NYC

fact checkin' cuz

really, I can't think of anyone whose collection I wouldn't enjoy rummaging through here

ronan

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

so Alex was the guy who came on my back in line. I was buying a Killing Joke record that day, now that I think about it.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

NO ONE wants to listen to my records???? I have classic house and MBV raritites!!

To hell with you all! My work here has all been for naught!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I would have picked you, Spencer, but I think we have all the same stuff.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot moley / gygax / you will be shot and everyone else

I agree, I can't pick, it's everyone on this list. I'm unerringly rude, if I'm at someone's house and there's any 500+ collection I helplessly wander over to the racks turn my head weirdly sideways and begin combing

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

in lieu of saying 'everyone', which is true, I'll say everyone who posts regularly on the electro-house, grime and dancehall threads. I love those things so much but am missing so many key tracks.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

1AN CHR1ST1E

BURN THE REST.

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 29 March 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i wanna listen to spencer's records.

I loved Blossom when I was 12. The show I mean. No specific crushes because all the characters were too stupid or too girl.

A Velvets-hater I worked with in '96 used to bitch about how much "Waiting for the Man" sounded like the Blossom theme song.

So far I'd be keen to hear Ned's and Alex In NYC's (if for no other reason than their consistent Iron Maiden love)...Matos if for nothing other than Prince, and Scott because his collection sounds fascinating.
More to come as I continue frolicking...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 March 2005 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

the thing i couldn't help noticing about alex's cds, besides the unexpectedly complete interpol collection and the nonchronological ordering of the iron maiden catalog, was the filing of klark kent as a "KE" item, and therefore before killing joke, rather than a "KL" item, which would come after killing joke, and which is where mine is filed (except for the minor detail that i don't actually have any killing joke records). where do the rest of you ILM librarians stand on this important issue?

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

My answer: he can file it however the hell he wants to.

I admit I liked seeing the Insides album there, of which I am greatly fond. Made up for the heartsick moment when I saw the I****pol.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 March 2005 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I mock your pain.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 31 March 2005 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

sigh.

the other thing about the alex collection is it demonstrates the wisdom, elegance and importance of having consistent logos, or at least consistent typefaces, across the cd spines of your band's catalog. obviously this is extremely easy to do when the albums are all reissued together, but nonetheless, in this regard, iron maiden whips both judas priest's and killing joke's asses.

Jesusfuck, Ned....well spotted. You eye for minute detail is impressive.

The `Maiden discs (as with the `Joke discs) are all out of chronological order because while I'm certainly anal.....I'm not THAT anal.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

he thing i couldn't help noticing about alex's cds, besides the unexpectedly complete interpol collection and the nonchronological ordering of the iron maiden catalog, was the filing of klark kent as a "KE" item, and therefore before killing joke, rather than a "KL" item, which would come after killing joke, and which is where mine is filed (except for the minor detail that i don't actually have any killing joke records). where do the rest of you ILM librarians stand on this important issue?

Being that Klark Kent is the pseudonym of Stewart Copeland (and not a band), he gets filed via the last name, Kent. Franz Ferdinand, however, is a band (and not an individual), and thus they get filed in the "FR" section.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and the only reason I have all the Interpol albums is that I used to know Daniel Kessler when he worked at Route 66 records and then at JetSet (Firewater's old label), so I believe I got the early ep for free. I bought their debut album, and then someone gave me Antics for my birthday this past October. I liked them at first. Apart from "Evil" (which is a great song, despite incomprehensibly crap lyrics) I can't say I know or would ever consciously listen to Antics again.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not a librarian, although I did misspend much of my youth inside the library, but I would just like to put my two cents in and say that, however you file it, "KE" and "KL" are both good combinations of letters.
