i;, Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah, i love phoenix, should I see them live?

breezy, Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

do you know what kind of material vdp is doing? his live show may not be your bag.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

new order tix go on sale tomorrow morning

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Black Mountain's also tonight, at Asterisk Art Project in Bushwick --- see you jokers there...

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Mastodon at Bowery Ballroom in April.

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish I were going to Cowboy Mouth tonight. Tomorrow night I'm either going to see Marc Broussard at Irving Plaza or Amelia Ray at the Cutting Room. And that's it for shows for me until after EMP.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't afford to go to shows. anything free happening?

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

oh good good. i thought i heard they were playing again tonight. that should be good. i've heard they are better live then their album (black mountain)

which is also what i've heard about ariel pink and grizzly bear

i should perhaps investigate that VDP show with vic chestnut. thanks for the tip jody. i just saw the name and instantly was like YES

breezy, Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

someone said ariel pink was better live?
i've heard nothing but horror stories about his live show.

mitch dub (ano ano), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

The Hold Steady are playing. Or did that already happen?

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe i'm wrong and granted the 2 people who raved about it don't always share my tastes, but I did in fact hear good things. that it's a bit more melodic, song oriented than the album

breezy, Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Grizzly bear is absolutely horrendous, live or otherwise, but I guess we don't have similar tastes.

Eppy (Eppy), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

next tuesday: bunnybrains, nautical almanac, aaron rosenblum, lexie mountain at siberia.

next thursday: books on tape

sunday the 10th: can't, vegas martyrs, 2673, mr. uterus

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a free NIN-themed party at the Avalon this Saturday. They'll play the new album in it's entirety.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

This Sunday: Willem Breuker Kollektief at Tonic. These guys are a blast live. The best jazz bang for you buck by a long shot.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

have you seen them live? i've only heard good things. four part harmonies. interesting clarinet as bass use. etc etc. then again everyone loves the fiery furnaces and I for the life of me can't see the appeal.

breezy, Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

god new NIN album. i can't imagine. just when you think a band is gone. (green day anyone) they just appear again....

breezy, Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

have you seen them live?

Yes, I saw them at Joe's Pub a couple of years ago. They were great musicians and great entertainers. They do the inside/outside thing with wit and personality, and clearly enjoy themselves. But I also liked the Furnaces when I saw them, so take my recommendation with a grain of salt.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

oh nate. i was talking to eppy about GB, but what you are speaking of sounds great. I might be pursuaded. i asked around and my 2 friends who saw GB raved and I trust their tastes (the be da music critics) so I'm def going to check them out. eppy is actually the first dissenting voice i've heard re: gb and their live show. as for ariel pink. tis true I've heard mixed bag. what about wolf eyes. I'm on the fence about going. is it worth it?

breezy, Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i've been meaning to see Andrew Bird

breezy, Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost
some percentage of the ladybug transistor is on tour in australia right now...

crly, Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say Grizzly Bear live is much, much, much better than on record; the album either bugged or bored me, whereas their live set charmed all hell out of me and what looked to be an entire room.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

dekker for serious??? holy smokes!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

did anyone go to tuxedomoon last night (i think geeta mentioned something on her blog about this - so geeta if you read this, please report!)? i just visited new york yesterday, and the only thing the music listings convinced me of were how relatively few acts choose to stop here in philly.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Thursday, 31 March 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

joseph, you are crazy. cowboy mouth are no good., no good at all. im surprised they're still together.
also, phoenix are kinda lame live. more of a standard rock band than the brilliant pop group i was hoping for.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Thursday, 31 March 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Hold Steady and Phoenix are playing on the same night!

Also: Blood Brothers! Mountain Goats! King Sunny Ade! Out Hud!

DMBQ, Roxy Pain, the Assault, Machete, TRipple Nipple, and Monarch at Pianos Saturday, apr. 2nd. It will be an early show, Japan's DMBQ goes on at 7pm.

Miguelito, Friday, 1 April 2005 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

webster hall is a large, multi-purpose venue in the east-ish village. they mainly do horrifically cheesy dance nights, but within the past few years they started doing a lot more live dates. i've never been for one, though, as most bands big enough to play there would also do a brooklyn show in a more familiar venue.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 1 April 2005 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

the folks that run the bowery ballroom are managing the live shows at webster hall now. i really didn't like my first couple visits there - muddy sound, OK sightlines, expensive drinks, long lines to get out. i've heard it's gotten much better recently though, especially with the sound.

rajeev (rajeev), Friday, 1 April 2005 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

webster will never have anything on bowery. if I can avoid it I will at all costs.

breezy, Friday, 1 April 2005 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for all the info!

youn, Friday, 1 April 2005 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

shit! the gris gris are playing soon too. conflicting with the grizzly bear show. damn damn. i'll see them another time. but I've been into that album.

breezy, Friday, 8 April 2005 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

just when you think a band is gone. (green day anyone) they just appear again....

I'm kind of sick of hearing people say that.

billstevejim, Friday, 8 April 2005 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 8 April 2005 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

o. nate (onate), Friday, 8 April 2005 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i get the sense these annie shows may be list-only - does anyone know any details?

unrelated, i just saw that antena have reformed and are playing tonic on may 19.

rajeev (rajeev), Friday, 8 April 2005 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

wolf eyes was awesome

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 8 April 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone know where the gris gris are playing? I want to check that show out. I like the album, don't love it, but many folks have told me the live show's awesome.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Friday, 8 April 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh, Duane of Negroclash/Other Music at Capone's Friday, followed by DJ High Priest at Capone's Saturday.

HIGH PRIEST! As in Gray/Death Comet Crew/et al

(yeah, this is a self promo, as I'm one of the promoters...but it is free)

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 23 June 2005 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i'll be at sleater-kinney, it should be great. i've seen the new songs a couple times live before, but now i'll actually know them well. and for once, i'm actually excited to see how a band sounds in roseland ... the bigger room might do 'the woods' well.

dead meadow's opening set should be aces too.

rajeev (rajeev), Thursday, 23 June 2005 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

freeblood is playing at my house on friday, if anyone wants to come, email me.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 23 June 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

whats club love?

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 23 June 2005 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Club Love is a newish w. village venue opened by some serious dance music heads. From ALL accounts, the best sound system in NYC. The owners have intentionally avoided promoting it at all, and it's gotten no press. They've already had some great guest djs and I heard it was empty(no suprise) but word is spreading because Kenny Dope did a hip hop night there a few weeks ago and I heard it was full. Metro Area this friday is as promoted as any event there, and they plan on DJing and using dub effects and adding live synths and help from the "metro area studio players" or whatever which may mean some live strings or horn or percussion or who knows what. I will go to your house afterwords, assuming it doesn't go all night. Also Phil, you know Gabe and Mattie are doing their party at Happy Endings on friday? Suppose Gabe is splitting his time?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 23 June 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

shit. i wish i was getting evicted next month. looks like im missing a lot on friday. oh well. but yeah, i guess gabe is going to come by after happy ending.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be in NYC on July 1st and 2nd, so I'll definitely check out the Rooftop Films. Anything else exciting that weekend? Any Canada Day celebrations there (kidding)?

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

there actually is a Canada Day thing (whenever it is)in Prospect Park...Stars and some other bands from Canadia...

b b, Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, is there going to be a NY Happenings notice about the Club Love party? I *heart* Metro Area but have never seen them live and would be there Friday come hell or high water!

Candicissima (candicissima), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

is there going to be a NY Happenings notice about the Club Love party?

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/nyhappenings/message/22710

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, looks like it's this Saturday (the day after Quebec's national holiday) and it seems to be New Pornographers/Stars/The Sadies. Makes sense, they probably have to hurry home to celebrate it proper.

http://www.brooklynx.org/celebrate/schedule.asp

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah thanks! I get the digest version and I go blind reading the big posts sometimes :)

Candicissima (candicissima), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never been to roseland.. about what time should I get there? I want to be up front for the show..

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I get the digest version and I go blind reading the big posts sometimes

I fully understand...sorry for answering for Dan though :-)

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually go to great lengths to try to keep the digest clean, often scolding people for not editing their responses. If you want to I can put you on the Crazy Rhythms mailing list, which was created for friends who didn't have the constitution to wade through nyhappenings. And technically, it's not a full Metro Area live set, but a DJ set with benefits.

Come to Capones saturday for all your after-party needs from various bike events, outdoor shows, parades etc etc.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone know when Malkmus/YLT ends? i.e., would it be possible to do that and then head to the rooftop thing? it sounds like it might be over at 7:30.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

does Club Love have a mailing list? how does one find out about upcoming shows?

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 23 June 2005 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love to get on that list!

Is Club Love on that long block on 8th between 5th and 6th? That spot sure has a lot of turnover.

Candicissima (candicissima), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i think club love is the old W8TH space, which is btwn 5th/6th.

for the july 4th show, set times are laura cantrell at 3:30, the jicks at 4:20, and YLT at 6:00. gotta love malkmus going on at 4:20.

rajeev (rajeev), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not sure how early you need to get to roseland to be up close, but they do start things promptly there. i once completely missed the futureheads by showing up at like 7:45.

rajeev (rajeev), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, the Battery website sez the YLT show ends at 7.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

for a second I thought you all were talking about Y&T.

In Rock We Trust.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard Stephen Malkmus singing "Mama" on the radio today. Something about his mama making crepes. How fancy! And I heard Laura Cantrell singing a song with a street name as a title. Both were good.

youn, Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

When my ladyfriend and I walked past that during the day recently, someone got snatched and yanked inside.

Helluva promo campaign!

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Thursday, 23 June 2005 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

That Malkmus thing sounds like the perfect way to spend a July Fourth afternoon. Anyone know how strict they are about alcohol and picnicking on the grass?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 24 June 2005 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

That S-K show was, like, the best show EVER.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 24 June 2005 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 24 June 2005 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

phil, sure you're drunk and having a good time right now, I left Metro Area early, long week, now I'm crashing. Sorry.

btw, weird spot, but Love does in fact have the best sound system I've ever heard. It was however, played too lout, though it's testement to it's amazingness that it didn't strain the ears or distort. Unbelievable spot, strange crowd. Yuppies, some bridge and tunnel, and a few disco/techno/house heads. A party packed with good vibes people there will be life-changing.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 25 June 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

Feist again tonight on Saturday at the Bowery!
I loves me some feist!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 25 June 2005 06:39 (twenty years ago)

yeah, the sound at love was fantastic! amazing how crisp + loud it was without being overwhelming, it was a treat to listen to. dug the setup too, especially that cushioned crawlspace.

rajeev (rajeev), Saturday, 25 June 2005 08:03 (twenty years ago)

Richard Thompson free at the World Financial Ctr tonight at 7. Well, you should see him once.

Henry Threadgill's ZOOID at Jazz Gallery tonight & tomorrow.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 1 July 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

I saw the Unreal Scarlet's Well, aka Bid from the Monochrome Set and a bunch of nyc indie-popsters he'd just met, play last night at the Knitting Factory. Small but DEVOTED and EXCITED crowd. He was great! Played 75% Monochrome Set classics, and the new stuff is great as well, if a bit more slow and folky(in the brit psyche-folk tradition). Can't believe more of NY's post-punk scenester record collectors didn't come out, they missed a great show.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 1 July 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

The Julean MacLean and Mu are playing at Rothko on July 21st (I think). Not sure when tickets go on sale..

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 1 July 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

i hate doing this, but with everyone out of town for the holidays and the prospect of playing to an empty room looming, my manners evaporate. So: Spielerfrau is playing Mercury Lounge tomorrow. At 11:30. I don't claim to be the best available entertainment choice in NYC (or even at Mercury Lounge) that evening. But there will be an afterparty. With free vodka.

throwing parties during the summer is hard work. unless yr the Deitch Projects I guess.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 1 July 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

pitch black, noise rock DJed through guitar amps, no beer, 1,000,000 people, sweat, cops, cops, and more cops, no beer.

yeah i went by a little late, saw the crowd spillover and the cops, turned around, bought an ice cream, and went home. though the afterparty was supposedly fun.

dan, my eviction party got a little nuts. insanely packed and then someone let off the fire extinguisher in the hallway/stairway. then grafitti people tagged all over the inside and outside walls. then there was a water fight at 7am, and when i woke up at 10am to pee, there were a couple people passed out on the couches and some random creepy dude just standing in my kitchen. i told him the party was over, but he just nodded and said something about wanting a nap. he was standing by the knife box, so i just nodded and ran back to my room and locked the door. no more house parties. ever.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 1 July 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

here's the whole deal for people who care about fine print...

Announcing an epicly awesome show of fantastic-sized
proportions:

On Sunday, July 10, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, one of
the most beguiling and downright-fucking-great shows
of the summer will take place.

Who:

AKRON/FAMILY
SIR RICHARD BISHOP
DOUBLE LEOPARDS

About:

http://www.younggodrecords.com/uploads/images_categories/83.jpg

Akron/Family (http://www.akronfamily.com/) are a
Brooklyn four-piece with releases on Michael Gira's
Young God Records
(http://www.younggodrecords.com/prodtype.asp?PT_ID=83&strPageHistory=cat).
Gira, of course, should need no introduction but some
people have faulty memories (this author included), so
the bands Mr. Gira has led might ring a bell. Namely,
the long-departed SWANS and the more recent ANGELS OF
LIGHT band. In fact, Mr. Gira likes Akron/Family so
much he asked them to be the backing band on his
ANGELS OF LIGHT recordings and tours. So let us let
him describe them, shall we? Here goes:

"...I was completely won over –- stunned in fact –- by
a show at Brooklyn's Pete's Candy Store, where the
music veered from gentle American country folk to
unabashed electronic noise to gathering and erupting
crescendos, to extended skronk improvisations that
then suddenly cut to an LSD version of a backwoods
barbershop quartet or a Louvin Brothers spiritual –-
sometimes all within the course of one ridiculously
long 'song' – ha ha!"

http://www.locustmusic.com/images/Photos/SirRichardBishop.jpg

Next we have Sir Richard Bishop
(http://www.locustmusic.com/sirrichardbishop.html),
and without taking anything away from anyone else, I
have to say that I'm probably most excited to see his
set that night. Those in the know know Sir Richard
Bishop from his more famous trio, the SUN CITY GIRLS.
Personally, the GIRLS are up there in my pantheon of
mind-numbingly heroic
the-world-would-be-a-crappier-place-without musicians
such as the late Albert Ayler, the late John Fahey,
the late Charley Patton, the Stooges, the Fall, and
very few others that are escaping my mind right now.
Anyways, yeah, seriously heavy, as anyone who has seen
them can attest. Sir Richard Bishop's solo work is
fucking awesome, though usually more staggeringly
beautiful then confrontational. Anyway read this:

"...in the twilight hours of a shadow world sensed
only by few, Bishop is a dazzling unaccompanied
guitarist... Bishop rides a very tall horse through a
surrealist's cowboy set that's 1 part bruit Peckinpah
muscularity & 2 parts illuminated Jodorowskian
symbolism. a very strange place, indeed. Armed only
with a single steel string wooden guitar,
bare-knuckled Bishop fends off the horrors & dangers
of the night with ease as he spits out glorious white
robed arabesques, django inspired gypsy arcs, & latin
terracotta flourishes like so many spinning
tumbleweeds in a one horse town that is his alone."

http://wfmu.org/danb/gfx/dlforwfmu2.jpg

Last but certainly not least are Double Leopards
(http://www.doubleleopards.org/), one of my faves to
crawl outta the Brooklyn woodwork, and yes, another
band with beards (and I don't mean the ladies). Their
"Halve Maen" double LP (on Eclipse) has been a slow,
heavy burner on my turntable for, shit I guess it's
some years now. Where does the time go? I dunno, but
the Leopards obliterate it. Not to be missed.

When:
Sunday, July 10 - 8 PM-ish

Where:
Glasshouse Gallery, 38 S. 1st Street (b/w Kent &
Wythe)
Conveniently located only a five minute walk from the
Bedford L stop and the Metropolitan G stop.

How Much:
$7, cheap!

Also, while I have your attention, another fantastic
show appears just on the horizon:

Friday, August 12

SIGHTINGS
METALUX
MONOTRACT
(+ 1 act TBA)

location/time/price TBA so keep your lids open...

invaluable thx to mr. todd p

FREE by the sea in Brighton Beach: LIZA and Patti LaBelle (alas, not together):

http://brooklynconcerts.com/seaside.html

I saw Burt Bacharach breeze through his hits in about 75 minutes there a few years ago.

Overheard at the Battery, 5:10 pm July 4: "Didn't Malkmus play this song already?"

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

peppermints, excepter, grizzly bear, s.t.r.e.e.t.s,
Rothko

sunday july 10th

this to me sounds very very good

karrrrrrr, Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Malkmus was great at Battery Park. Unfortunately too many people showed up - may have had something to do with the gorgeous weather - and a lot of people got stuck outside the fenced-in area. Laura Cantrell was fairly pleasant. I didn't stay around for Yo La Tengo.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

I just looked up "dull" and saw Malkmus' picture. The guy who yelled out "S*mmer B*be" when he took the stage musta fallen asleep fast.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

That guy was probably pretty clueless anyway - yelling out Pavement song titles at a Malkmus concert. Though the guy that I heard yelling for "Jo Jo's Jacket" got his wish.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

I heard something about MU doing PS1 that weekend - is there a difference? someone please inform my sorry ass - Im in massachusetts & planning a trip to the city so I really dont know what the deal is

vanessa novaeris (novaeris), Thursday, 14 July 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

PS1 is a daytime thing, a hipster yuppiee sunshine young architects wet dream of an event every saturday during the summer. Show up super early for big big lines. Only times I've ever gone I had lucky guest-list action. I may have to go for Mu though, I saw her minus Maurice at Canal Room do Karaoke to her own tracks and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen.

beach blanket blowout:

SIGHTINGS (load records, http://loadrecords.com/bands/sightings.html)
MONOTRACT (ecstatic peace! records, http://www.monotract.com/)
METALUX (load records/5rc records, http://www.metalux.org/)

at the WATER TAXI BEACH in Long Island City, Queens
Friday, August 12 at 8 PM sharp!

SIGHTINGS are probably the heaviest electrified trio in new york right now, seriously love these dudes and their most recent record - "ARRIVED IN GOLD" on load records - is a classic. they sound like THOMAS BRINKMANN fronting SUICIDE or something additionally ridiculous.

MONOTRACT are a fantastic trio originally from miami, florida featuring CARLOS GIFFONI (aka the man behind NO FUN FEST), and have released stuff on public eyesore and thurston moore's ecstatic peace! (due this fall). they sorta started in a very HARRY PUSSY-heavy guitar attack vibe, but then started playing laptops and other nonsense, and now it's just a big mix of everything. fun times.

METALUX are the duo of j. graf and mv carbon, two amazing ladies formerly known from their work in the SCISSOR GIRLS and BRIDE OF NO-NO (two amazing defunct chicago no wave bands). they've released stuff on load and 5rc and all over the place, and play one helluva mighty throb.

as for the venue, you may have read about the WATER TAXI BEACH in last weekend's New York Times:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/31/nyregion/thecity/31beac.html?

"Visitors lie in the sun, sip $2 cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon, and wolf down hot dogs and burgers prepared by Harry Hawk, the man behind Schnack restaurant on Union Street in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn."
(also is the dude behind gowanus yacht club, too)

timed perfectly for apres-work shenanigans!

they were good, too. i also dug tomorrow's friend, i'd never heard them before.

rajeev (rajeev), Thursday, 25 August 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

tf are a l'il too "girls-who-tuck-their-boots-into-their-jeans" for me, but whatever, that's cool. the double's sound wasn't so hot, unfortunately. wanted to strangle the sound guy.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 25 August 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i'm just a sucker for all the guitars. was entertaining to see them visibly piss off the MC by playing long.

definitely a weird mix for the double ... i feel like that's been the case at every south st seaport show i've been to. (erm, all three...)

rajeev (rajeev), Thursday, 25 August 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

i was standing right by the soundboard and couldn't hear hardly any drums or guitar, but dude's voice was ALL OVER (i like his voice but it shouldn't be the most prominent thing in the mix). bad mix.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 25 August 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

This woulda been upcoming yesterday!

Sorry to disappoint you there.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 25 August 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Now I recall getting locked out of this the year the Yeah Yeah Yeahs played... so I guess I'll go by 3 if at all.

one month passes...
metro area is starting a monthly at Love. if i were still living in new york i'd be nutting

W i l l (common_person), Sunday, 2 October 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

here's my current itinerary (though i doubt i'll make even half of these):

10/7 - united state of electronica, knitting factory
10/14 - damian lazarus, spirit
10/19 - superpitcher/ada, canal room (or was this pushed to november?)
10/24 - adult., mercury lounge/stew, joe's pub
11/10 - broadcast, webster hall
11/11 - ladytron DJ set, rothko

joseph (joseph), Monday, 3 October 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

will, you'd be the only one. Love is under-promoted, the owner had the lights too bright and put a riser covered with beanbags in the prime dance space, the vibe was weird, a small amount of heads who really wanted to dance came out but it never got crowded enough. Or dark enough. Too damn bright. The music and added synths and drum machines were fantastic though.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 3 October 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

Yea I should go to that at some point....

PS - Ladytron are BAD DJs

orgone accumulator (ex machina), Monday, 3 October 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

rapture are playing live this week.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 3 October 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

and jacques le cont is playing at m1sshapes (!?!?!) in a couple weeks.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 3 October 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

damn shame. the one time i went it was nearly empty except for some dudes who may or may not have been original paradise garagers, and the dj was spinning some kind of soulful house/garage that i wasn't into, but the sound was just a delight. and that waterfall chillout room, that could have been great in the right state of mind. damn.

W i l l (common_person), Monday, 3 October 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

crap tomorrow's sufjan katrina benefit thing with a million great bands is sold out
i snooze i lose

breezy, Monday, 3 October 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

there are still other ways to help katrina victims.

Ian John50n (orion), Monday, 3 October 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

I've been to Love 3 times, the first time Metro Area spun, which was even less full then this last time, then for Alexander Robotnick, which had a pretty good turnout, then this last Metro Area gig. The owner really wants to appeal to the heads, I mean some people showed up and poured baby powder on the floor saturday...I've never actually SEEN that happen! But the owner or whomever is underestimating the importance of a crowd of people for the "vibe". I think people show up for like, the Joe Clausell night or whatever, but Metro Area is not and has never been a part of that NYC deep house scene, so he can't expect all those hippy-dippy house heads to flock there.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 3 October 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

thanks ian. i thought that was the only way.

breezy, Monday, 3 October 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

maybe, dan. last year was just too stressful

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

last year was great despite the shitty shitty soundsystem in supreme trading's side room. And why people would rather hear Afrikaa Bambaata DJ then me, I'll never understand.

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 08:36 (twenty years ago)

yura yura were AWESOME last night. A lot harder then the mp3s on the mesh-key site. Lots of 70s style shit with a bit of (very) early Can thrown in, a bit of psychedelic pop stuff, some excursions into noise. Long songs, amazing performances.

moxie alvarez, Friday, 27 January 2006 02:35 (twenty years ago)

Phil, isobel is playing at th' Pub and I don't think tix are sold out yet. Oddball nineties luminary backup band:
"Eugene Kelly - member of the legendary Vaselines, Eugenius and Captain America, on vocals and guitar, Jim McCulloch of indie faves The Groovy Little Numbers and the chart topping Soup Dragons on guitar and vocals, along with sometime Teenage Fanclub member Dave McGowan (on everything from bass and keyboards to lap steel) and Dave Gormley on drums. "

Shit, I did post a show here. Once. Fuck. I'm not sure if that qualifies as "plenty" but I am, in fact, embarrassed.

Can a mod get rid of my previous post? I really didn't mean to. Sorry.

Erroneous Botch (joseph cotten), Thursday, 17 August 2006 00:10 (nineteen years ago)

Come on, self-promote with confidence! Mixed w/just the right amount of reticence and self-effacement, it goes down nice and smooth.....for instance:

Oneida and Black Dice, playing Sat August 26 at Studio B in Greenpoint -- no openers, just the two bands....and it's air-conditioned!

See, that went down real easy...

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 17 August 2006 00:48 (nineteen years ago)

excepter: there.
black dice: there.

excellent.

Nicedisc, in conjunction with Andrew Cappetta, is proud to present "Art, Audience and the Cosmic

Consciousness", a selection of film and videos that explores the intersections between art and artist, between

artwork and audience, and between the artistic experience and the psychedelic imagination. The screening is

the first in a monthly series that draws together a diverse selection of classic experimental cinema,

documentary work, video art, and various film and video detritus.

This month features:

* Caveh Zavedi's "Tripping With Caveh", an illuminating and hilarious exploration into the fusing of

artwork and consciousness that sees Caveh Zavedi and musician Will Oldham (Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Palace

Music, et al) taking psychedelic mushrooms, driving go-karts through the woods, and being attacked by hornets.

(Courtesy of Caveh Zavedi)

* "Les Maitres Fous", Jean Rouch's searing 1953 documentary about the religious "possessions" of the

Hauku religious sect of West Africa, in which supplicants consult their gods through intense trance

ceremonies.

* "Trance/Performance," the documentation of Matt Mullican's
performance in Geneva in 2003, in which he is hypnotized by a Jungian
practitioner and then undertakes a series of tasks which see him drawing, chanting, and in general

re-examining the world around him in a childlike state of wonderment. (Courtesy of the artist and Tracy

Williams, Ltd.)

* A selection of short films assembled from personal collections.
