# The Cure is dead. Say hello to Nu-Cure:

We are pleased to announce that Steve Sevrin long time Banshee will be parting ways with us to join old time drinking buddy Robert Smith on
keyboards with international nu-metal supergroup THE CURE.
Do not fear we will be keeping Steve's place on bass ( we're poets and dont know it ) warm for when the fat boy finally sobers up and sends him
home again.Don't let him steal YOUR makeup and hair Steve.

Steve will be joining the "Anti-Goth Dinosaur" in time for a European festival tour with other "Cure new boy" Keith Airey (ex Simple Minds,Gary Numan, Then Jericho and Nik Kershaw guitarist).

Sioux + Budgie

Un-fucking-believable.

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Saturday, 21 May 2005 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, i haven't listened to either band is years, but this is sorta exciting, even to me

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 21 May 2005 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I have my doubts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 21 May 2005 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

doubts of the excitement, or the news itself?

if this is true, HELLOOOOOOOOOOO THE GLOVE!

donut debonair (donut), Saturday, 21 May 2005 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Of the news...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 21 May 2005 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

But yeah, an actual *Glove* tour, that would be amusing/amazing!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 21 May 2005 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmmm....don't know what to think about this.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 May 2005 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a way of requiting the favour RS paid to them back in the day.

Ian Riese-Moraine is on toffuti break! (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoa, international nu-metal supergroup? Anti-Goth dinosaur? MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! That's the best thing I've read this week! (Rimbaud poems/prose and Solzhenitsyn novel aside.)

Ian Riese-Moraine is on toffuti break! (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

True or not, I'd sooner listen to a Severin-assisted Cure than subject myself to any further recordings by the jaw-dislocating-yawn-inspiring Creatures.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Could she be any more bitter?

Seb (Seb), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i think that's known as "humour"

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It doesn't seem that shocking to me...

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

this actually totally makes sense. steve and robert are best friends.

charleston charge (chaki), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah chaki, come to Long Beach and tell me that to my face
;-)

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 21 May 2005 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Well it seems like this is true. Departure of Roger and Perry has been confirmed....

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Saturday, 21 May 2005 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

A strange day, indeed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 21 May 2005 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Keyboard player in the Cure must be the most boring job in the world.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Saturday, 21 May 2005 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, you coulkd stick a key down w/a piece of sellotape and covertly read a book, I guess ;)

This is pretty weird, eh? I like the ususal sioux snarkiness, it makes me laugh.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 21 May 2005 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Roger's departing is a bit strange but he did leave the band before -- that's how Perry came in. *Him* going is truly a surprise since before he joined he was a roadie for the band and I think has now been working for the Cure one way or another for almost two decades.

Then again -- what would the Cure be without lineup upheaval? ;-)

Nothing as yet on Roger's own site:

http://www.rogerodonnell.com/html/news.html

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 21 May 2005 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i think that's known as "humour"

(Which is never ever bitter.)

RS_LaRue (RSLaRue), Saturday, 21 May 2005 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It might be worth mentioning here that Keith Airey is a noted Jimi Hendrix impersonator and also the brother of Don "played the keyboard intro to Mr Crowley" Airey. Or were they making that bit up?

Matt #2 (Matt #2), Saturday, 21 May 2005 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah Roger leaving was to be expected after all the Ross Robinson flare-ups, but I never expected Perry to follow.

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Saturday, 21 May 2005 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Was this the longest the Cure had gone without a lineup change? The Roger-Simon-Robert-Jason-Perry version lasted since 1996, right?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 21 May 2005 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, unless you want to argue that Boris playing on Acoustic Hits counts as a brief line-up change. It does make him the third person to quit and return though!

this actually totally makes sense. steve and robert are best friends.

I think they'd only spoken like twice in 20 years until recent months...

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 21 May 2005 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

im glad to hear perry is gone. he never had enough personality/guitar tone to stand out live

kephm (kephm), Saturday, 21 May 2005 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

can steve play saxophone?

kephm (kephm), Saturday, 21 May 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I seriously have no idea what is going on. Severin says he IS NOT playing with The Cure this summer and that it is someone's idea of a joke, and Roger hasn't heard anything about being let go. Now I have to question the second source too. For now, please consider the story false and accept my apologies for even posting it.

The fact that Siouxsie had said post-7 Year Itch that they would never work with Severin again and couldn't stand him did make the unsourced quote more than a bit suspicious...

kit brash (kit brash), Sunday, 22 May 2005 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew it, or had a feeling that this all seemed too unreal.

BeeOK (boo radley), Sunday, 22 May 2005 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I must say that I began to have my doubts about the veracity of this story somewhere in the middle of the phrase "international nu-metal supergroup" wrt The Cure.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Sunday, 22 May 2005 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

The fact that Siouxsie had said post-7 Year Itch that they would never work with Severin again

Did she? Any details on that?

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Sunday, 22 May 2005 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I am so mad at all of you now.

The Ghost of Emotional Rollercoaster (Dan Perry), Sunday, 22 May 2005 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, here Dan, this might bring some random cheer -- it's a concert report from a couple of days ago:

"I was at this years "WGT" from 13. - 16. may in leipzig, on the 13th of may i saw the concert of APOPTYGMA BERZERK.
during the concert they covered "a strange day" (of course from the cure)...after hearing it again and again and again I like this version ... of course this show was taped ;-) "

I think we need to hear this! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 May 2005 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

OH MY GOD WE CERTAINLY DO.

This could rival Razed In Black's "Disintegration" for top honors in the Cure Covers I Should Probably Hate But Am Absolutely Infatuated With stakes.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 22 May 2005 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

If you find it, share!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 May 2005 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, have you heard the D.C./mostly Dischord band Cure tribute CD?

donut debonair (donut), Sunday, 22 May 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Heard it? I OWN IT.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 22 May 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

no details apart from memory on the anti-Severin quote, just something I read around the time of those Sioux/Budgie greatest hits shows - basically saying that she found him even more insufferable during the Banshees reunion than when they'd split.

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 23 May 2005 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to hire her to write my press releases

corey c (shock of daylight), Monday, 23 May 2005 05:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Choice quotes from Siouxsie interview Uncut January 2005:

On Robert Smith

"WHY'S HE ON THE COVER?" demands Siouxsie Sioux. "Fat fool!"
"He" is Robert Smith and "the cover" is that of Uncut's sister publication NME Originals, their recent edition dedicated to goth.

On Steven Severin:

"I don't hate him," she says of their relationship, "I've just given up trying to work with him"

Bob Six (bobbysix), Monday, 23 May 2005 06:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"WHY'S HE ON THE COVER?" demands Siouxsie Sioux. "Fat fool!"

Conversely, I guess the chances of Robert Smith replacing Severin on a future Banshees reunion are slim then. *drum roll*

donut debonair (donut), Monday, 23 May 2005 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh well, that was a bit anti-climatic... Now, I'm wondering what impact Severin would have had if he'd joined.

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Monday, 23 May 2005 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Roger leaving was to be expected after all the Ross Robinson flare-ups
was roger mad that robinson cut all his parts out of the mix?

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 23 May 2005 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure he even got to play any parts...

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Monday, 23 May 2005 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh come on, you people have heard "Fake", "Labyrinth", "The Promise", "Never", "This Morning", "Anniversary", "Your God Is Fear" and "Taking Off", yes?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 23 May 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Apart from Anniversary and Taking Off, I don't really remember any important kboard parts on these. I must hear them again, tho

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Monday, 23 May 2005 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"Fake" is all keyboard, the foundation of "This Morning" is keyboard and the climaxes of the other songs are nothing without the keyboard part!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 23 May 2005 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep reading this thread title as "Sufjan Stevens joins The Cure"

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 23 May 2005 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

If anything, I'd want less keyboards from The Cure. I really want them to do a pared-down power-poppy album. Stuff like 'Trap' and 'Foolish Arrangements', everything under 4 minutes. One of their best gigs in the last 15 years was IMHO that 1993 XFM thing they did as a four-piece, without keyboards and really raw.

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I want an entire album of songs like "Lost".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

"Fake" is all keyboard, the foundation of "This Morning" is keyboard

yeah but those weren't even on the US version of the album.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

They're still out there in "heavy" circulation!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

...meantime there's been some heavy duty sniping between the official website and COF (see the May 24th entry for their response). However, this has now been posted as of May 27th:

Well, there's not much sense in withholding this any longer, and judging from the e-mails of the last couple of days, it's not exactly a state secret - Roger O'Donnell, Perry Bamonte and Daryl Bamonte are no longer with The Cure.

To each of you, our sincerest thanks for everything you contributed to The Cure and to the fans over these many years. We will miss you, and we wish you the best of luck with whatever you choose to do next.

The Severin/Airey thing is still being treated as a joke gone awry, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 May 2005 05:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm completely confused as to what exactly is happening/has happened...

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Friday, 27 May 2005 06:23 (twenty-one years ago)

COF now says The Cure back to a 3-piece, which would be the best thing ever. I doubt it though...
Did anyone say "Porl Thompson"?

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Friday, 27 May 2005 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh to dream...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 May 2005 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

And... LOL!

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Friday, 27 May 2005 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"COF now says The Cure back to a 3-piece, which would be the best thing ever"

oh please please, it would be just fantastic.
or a 4-piece with a decent guitarist...

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Friday, 27 May 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing as yet on Roger's own site:

http://www.rogerodonnell.com/html/news.html

-- Ned Raggett (ne...), May 21st, 2005.

There is now. And he says "as of Tuesday this week," which would be the 24th, three days after we found out. (?)

StanM, Friday, 27 May 2005 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

From Bilboard:

"As of Tuesday this week I am no longer a member of the Cure," O'Donnell wrote. "It was sad to find out after nearly 20 years the way I did but then I should have expected no less or more."

Elaborating to Billboard.com today, O'Donnell reveals that he was informed by Smith that he is transforming the Cure into a three-piece, backed only by bassist Simon Gallup and drummer Jason Cooper. "There's not really much you can say when you are the fifth member," he says, adding that he found out about the Cure's upcoming live dates via a fan Web site.

I'm excited and a bit upset at the same time...

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Friday, 27 May 2005 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Unbelievable, Thanks ILM as this is a great story!

BeeOK (boo radley), Friday, 27 May 2005 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. Smith speaks (via a comment on the official site -- there's no way to link directly to it):

CHANGE
5/29/2005 10:07:24 AM - by CURE:ROBERT
Change alone is eternal, perpetual, immortal.
- Arthur Schopenhauer

THERE ARE NOW THREE PEOPLE IN THE BAND: ME, SIMON AND JASON - AND THERE ARE VERY GOOD REASONS FOR THIS CHANGE... REASONS WE ALL KNOW, UNDERSTAND AND ACCEPT

THE RS/SG/JC/PB/RO'D CURE LINE-UP WAS TOGETHER FOR TEN GORGEOUS YEARS - WILD MOOD SWINGS, FIVE SWING LIVE, (GALORE), BLOODFLOWERS, (GREATEST HITS), TRILOGY, THE CURE - A SHARED LEGACY TO BE VERY PROUD OF INDEED

BUT NONE OF US CAN BELIEVE IT IS BETTER TO TREAD WATER MARK TIME BITE LIP RATHER THAN EMBRACE CHANGE WHEN CHANGE ARRIVES

SO ONWARD...
LOVE
RS

Chain of Flowers posted this over the weekend:

Meanwhile, the trio forges ahead with a new album and Curiosa UK?

"I've just read the following article on UK Channel 4 Teletext - "PS NEWS" (p.351).... in which Robert speaks of a new album.

CURIOUS NEWS FROM CURE

The Cure won't be touring Britain until next year, PS can reveal.

Although they're playing festivals in Europe, Robert Smith told PS: "I want to bring the Curiosa event here next year. I spent a lot of time researching the bill last year for America. I DON'T HAVE THE TIME NOW, WE'RE DOING A NEW LP."

Smith added: "We won't do Glastonbury, as they've fallen out with us. I was told they think we've never done a good performance whenever we've played there."

Elsewhere on PS NEWS (p.353) Robert talks about the time Lou Reed was rude to his dad...!"

And according to "Second Source" (who turned out to be 100% correct last friday), the trio have already recorded 5 songs and we might see some sort of preview before the festivals.

---

Hmmm...hm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

ooo-wee, Cure trop goes back to Primary-style aggressiveness and records albums in less than 4 years!

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"Smith added: "We won't do Glastonbury, as they've fallen out with us. I was told they think we've never done a good performance whenever we've played there.""

Wtf?!? Is this true?!? What idiot said The Cure have never done a good performance at Glastonbury and where were they while The Cure were setting the Pyramid Stage on fire in 1986?!?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks Ned for the update!

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know if I'm excited or not. Leaning towards not. Although the thing about recording new songs is awesome.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not excited? I think this is great news

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Cure reverting to trio after listening to their own remasters: classic
Cure relying on Ross Robinson in nu-trio mode: potentially big dud

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the influence of Robinson on the last album has been rather limited. i don't hear anything that RS couldnt have produced himself.

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Cure reverting to trio after listening to their own remasters: classic

You know, that's probably what happened!

Ian Riese-Moraine's Plateau Rouge! (Eastern Mantra), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I'm glad Simon Gallup's still in the band. I consider his bass playing the Other Essential Element (absent the sentimental appeal of characters from the distant past like Lol, Porl, Boris, etc.).

I honestly had lost track of the lineup enough that my first reaction was "Jason who"?

The Mad Puffin, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, the whole COF vs RS: FITE thing is starting to get a bit crazy. I must admit that RS comes across as a bit of an ass...

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Meanwhile, more from COF re: new album rumors:

About 3 or 4 weeks ago, I received an e-mail from someone who had talked to *********, a well known ********* (best to protect his/her name & occupation given the current climate), and this anonymous person said that The Cure had already started work on a new album, and that Dave Allen would likely be returning to produce it. At the time, I thought it was interesting but probably false, and I couldn't confirm either part of it (SHOCK! COF does NOT post a rumor! What was wrong with me?). Given what we've learned over the last week or so, it has become much more interesting.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha - Dave Allen, that would be nice...

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's the most recent RS post:

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST...

I THINK THIS WAS ABOUT THE SUN COMING UP TOMORROW?
NOT THAT FUNNY REALLY... MERELY HIGHLIGHTING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STATING THE UNDISPUTED - (YES I AM SINGING ON BILLY CORGAN'S ALBUM 'THE FUTURE EMBRACE' - BUT THE POST WILL GO UP NEARER THE RELEASE - (DUE IN PART TO THE SLIGHTLY IDIOT 'ROLLING NEWS' WAY THINGS WORK AT PRESENT!) IT SEEMS TO MAKE MORE SENSE TO FLAG THE ALBUM WHEN IT'S ABOUT TO BE AVAILABLE RATHER THAN THE NIGHT I SING IT... ) - AND THE PURELY SPECULATIVE (STEVE SEVERIN WILL BE JOINING THE CURE... OF COURSE HE WON'T... BUT THE BLUE SUNSHINE EXTRAS CD IS SHAPING UP VERY NICELY!)

ANYWAY:
I WILL LET THINGS REST HERE... NEWS POSTS ON THIS WEBSITE WILL REMAIN 'NEWS ONLY' - THAT WAS (AND IS) ESSENTIALLY MY POINT - (INITIALLY ACCOUNTING FOR (IF I REMEMBER) THE LACK OF 'LIFE GIVING RUMOUR' ON THIS WEBSITE... )

"YOUR NAME BEGINS WITH C... OR J... AND YOU HAVE HAD SOME PERSONAL WORRIES RECENTLY... "

AND IF YOU GET TEN TRIES AT PICKING A NUMBER BETWEEN ONE AND TEN YOU CAN BE PRETTY SURE YOU WILL GET IT...

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not excited because the synths have become an integral part of The Cure experience and I think Roger is massively talented and added a ton of dimension to the band.

HAving said that, the reunion album where every past member comes back and forms a gigantic Curechestra is going to be fucking amazing.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave Allen of Gang of Four/Shriekback? Wild.

THE AIR NO LONGER IN MY THROAT ANOTHER PERFECT LIE IS CHOKED BUT IT ALWAYS FEELS THE SAME SO THEY CLOSE TOGETHER DRESSED IN RED AND YELLOW INNOCENT FOREVER SLEEPING CHILDREN IN THEIR BLUE SOFT ROOMS STILL DREAM

Robert sounds demented in his posts. Can he not form a coherent thought or sentence anymore?

Ian Riese-Moraine's exploding hamster zeppelin! (Eastern Mantra), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

While I think the Cure has been nice 'n' synthy for a good long time(I mean, "Just Like Heaven," anyone? "Close to Me"?) I'm not altogether certain how important it is to have an official band member performing the synth parts.

It's not as if we're talking rollicking Jelly Roll Morton-style piano, or chirpy gospel organs, where the keyboard player's style shines through. Call me rockist but it seems to me that the keyboard sounds are mostly there for atmosphere, and might just as well be triggered or played by a sideperson.

The Mad Puffin, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave Allen of Gang of Four/Shriekback? Wild.

Different guy. (Check your producer credits for the Chameleons and the Sisters of Mercy.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, have you actually listened to what's going on in "Homesick", "Plainsong", "Lullaby", "Gone!", "Trust", "Strange Attraction", "This Is A Lie" and "High" (the single mix)? Or how about the way that the synth is the backbone for the other instruments to revolve around in "Closedown", "Last Dance", "Prayers For Rain", "The Same Deep Water As You", "Disintegration", "Untitled", "Apart", "Doing The Unstuck", "Treasure", "The Loudest Sound", "The Last Day Of Summer", "Out Of This World", "Bloodflowers", "Labyrinth" and "Anniversary"? (Not even getting into b-sides/bonus tracks here but that adds something like 12 more songs since Roger arrived on the scene.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I grant you several of those (been a while since I thought about this much), especially "Prayers for Rain." If that gorgeous swoopy line was a Roger contribution I will retract what I said posthaste.

The Mad Puffin, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

From what I understand of the Cure's songwriting process since 1985, Robert makes demos that sketch out lyrics and chord progressions and then presents them to the band, who then either fill in their parts or take his demo as a baseline and come up with more interesting/evolved arrangements for their bits. I think Porl and Roger used to do demos as well and some of them ended up on Cure albums (I think Porl was responsible for at least one KMKMKM song, maybe "Shiver and Shake"? and IIRC Roger started the ball rolling that would eventually become "Homesick").

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I love how Dan always seems to have these lists of Cure songs ready...

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Porl and Boris gave us 'Like Cuckatoos', 'If Only Tonight' and another one, 'Snakepit' maybe. I have to dust off my old Cure-News...

The Emancipation of Baaderonixx (KERERU 4 LIFE!) (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I have dedicated sections of my brain for The Cure, Prince and Real World/Road Rules alumni.

xpost: Yeah, I think you're right. I was going to say "The Snakepit" but chickened out for no particular reason.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not familiar with the democracy or lack thereof in the songwriting/recording process of Cure albums over the years, but I'm guessing the reduction of the Cure to a three piece is just a move to establish a smaller core constituency of the band, as opposed to being limited to the three for all elements of what the band will do..

Will the Cure only exist as three people live? Maybe. Maybe not.

Will the Cure only exist as three people as far as decision making in the album creation process? Outside any producer(s), it sounds very likely.

I think this is mainly the difference here now. Though Dan, Ned, and others will have far more insight than me.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this is news only because the previous lineup had been that large in band members, and for that long.

Massive lineup changes occur almost daily in the Spiritualized camp.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

and yet a new message from Bobby:

I JUST GOT AN EMAIL FROM A FRIEND ASKING ME TO PUT THE (SURPRISINGLY!) STILL ONGOING 'RUMOURS DEBATE' TO BED - I SUSPECT THIS IS NOT IN MY GIFT! - BUT A FEW FINAL WORDS FROM ME ANYWAY...

(AS FOR "a serious problem"... UMMM... NOT SURE WHICH PART OF SERIOUS OR PROBLEM I DON'T GET... AS I REALLY DON'T CARE - IS THAT UNAMBIGUOUS ENOUGH?!!)

SO - ONE LAST TIME: THIS WEBSITE IS THE 'OFFICIAL' WEBSITE - THERE IS NO POINT IN POSTING HOURLY NEWS OF DISCUSSIONS WE MAY OR MAY NOT BE HAVING WITH REGARDS LIVE SHOWS/STUDIO WORK/PROPOSED TRIPS TO THE SEASIDE ETC ETC ETC AS 99% OF THEM NEVER HAPPEN... HOW COULD IT BE HELPFUL?

I HONESTLY DON'T CARE ABOUT RUMOURS ON THE WEB - WITHOUT THEM IT WOULD SURELY COME UNDONE! - AND I ENJOY READING NEWS OF CURE ACTIVITY IN THE WIDER WORLD AS POSTED BY FANS ON VARIOUS WEBSITES - IT IS OFTEN THE WAY THE BAND FINDS OUT ABOUT STUFF LIKE TRIBUTES/BOOTLEGS/ROGUE ADS ETC...

MY POINT IS MERELY: HERE IS NEWS

(AND AS A PARTING WHISPER: WE ARE NOT PLAYING COLMAR AND DAVE ALLEN IS NOT DOING THE NEW CURE ALBUM... BUT... *)

SPENDING MY LIFE DENYING RUMOURS THAT I KNOW TO BE JUST THAT: RUMOURS? UMMM... NO THANKYOU

I AM OFF NOW TO GET ON WITH REAL THINGS...
AND NEWS OF THEM WILL BE POSTED HERE WHEN THEY HAPPEN!

LOVE

Yay real things!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

In general, the touring version of the band has always mirrored the studio version of the band. Things were out of sync during the flux perios of 83-84 and when Lol was in the process of being replaced by Roger, but other than the studio and live bands have been the same.

xpost: Thank you, Robert, for scarring me with visions of "real things" under your skirt.

And this is not a flux perio?

Flux Perio with his latest industrial masterpiece Entry Via Obstruction.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

This is an unambiguous lineup change, not a perio of flux. It is also not Ricky Martin meats nu-beat.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I still can't get over "nu-metal supergroup."

The Mad Puffin, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Ruin my new musical dream, why don't you, Dan.

Dan is right, BTW, in that it's very much a clear break, but at the same time I think it's entirely possible that another five-man lineup could emerge. We'll see.

I have to say that the real surprise in all this is the separation of the Bamontes, given that they've been involved (individually or together) with the Cure to one extent for another for something like a quarter-century? All the more intriguingly, of course, is the fact that there's been no statement from them yet.

The Ghost of Did You Appreciate That Intentional Typo Upthread? (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

IIRC Roger started the ball rolling that would eventually become "Homesick")

so he is responsible for the best cure song ever! a big loss!

Things were out of sync during the flux perios of 83-84 and when Lol was in the process of being replaced by Roger,

this is news to me; I thought Roger didn't show up until Disintegration?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Roger got drafted in to play the end (maybe as much as the latter half) of The Kissing Tour, largely because Lol was so drunk that he was using his synth as a crutch rather than an instrument. After the tour, Lol was slid quietly into a corner and ignored while Roger did all of the Synth work on Disintegration.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The Ghost of Did You Appreciate That Intentional Typo Upthread?

Hurrah!

Yeah, Roger first appeared with the Cure during Kiss Me days -- you'll notice that's him playing second keyboard in the "Just Like Heaven" video.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

That's right, I'd forgotten that! So he played the entire tour.

The Ghost of And: The Most Important Conjunction (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, word from Perry, posted on COF:

Dear Chris,

Could you tell all the people who contact you that I''m really overwhelmed by the amount of fans who have written to me, and you and to all the Cure websites - I never knew I had that much of an impact or how important a part of The Cure I was for so many people. Please pass on my thanks to everyone for their support and compliments and their best wishes for my future. I wish the band well and bear no grudge. I have no definite plans at this time but will imform you all if I become involed in any other projects.
Once again -Thank You!

And yet another RS message!

What's happening to Robert ?
5/31/2005 5:01:17 PM - by CURE:ROBERT
WHAT'S HAPPENING IS A DIM REALIZATION THAT POSTING HERE INSTEAD OF STICKING TO THE NEWS IS A MISTAKE! IT SEEMS THAT SOME PEOPLE ONLY SEE WHAT THEY WANT TO SEE AND HEAR WHAT THEY WANT TO HEAR... IN MY PREVIOUS POSTS I HAVE BEEN VERY CAREFUL TO PUSH ONE SIMPLE POINT - THIS WEBSITE DOESN'T POST ANYTHING THAT ISN'T 100% CONFIRMED - IT POSTS FACTS NOT RUMOURS...

WHY IS THIS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND?!! IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FANSITES... PLEASE!

(HOW CAN "AND I ENJOY READING NEWS OF CURE ACTIVITY IN THE WIDER WORLD AS POSTED BY FANS ON VARIOUS WEBSITES - IT IS OFTEN THE WAY THE BAND FINDS OUT ABOUT STUFF LIKE TRIBUTES/BOOTLEGS/ROGUE ADS ETC... " BE DISSING FANS... HUH?!!)

THIS WEBSITE CONFIRMS (AS FAR AS I KNOW!) WHAT IS ACTUALLY GOING TO HAPPEN WITH THE CURE - SIMPLE

I FIND IT SERIOUSLY UNREAL THAT SUCH A DRY FACT CAN GENERATE SUCH HYPERBOLE - ON WHICH NOTE I ABSOLUTELY STOP WRITING ABOUT IT...

FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE ETC ETC

ONWARDS?
LOVE

AS THIS IS NOT THE OFFICIAL CURE SITE, I'M MORE THAN DELIGHTED TO PROVIDE NOTHING BUT RUMOURS AND LIES HERE AS OPPOSED TO FACTS. BUT I THINK IT WOULD BE MORE FUN TO LET YOU WONDER ABOUT MY COMMENT ON MY SITE REGARDING THE SKIRT AND LEAVE IT AT THAT.

Another blast from the past: Mike Hedges!

The Cure are featured on YAHOO! playing live Wednesday 15th June 2005

The exclusive four song performance (Fire In Cairo / M / The Drowning Man / The Figurehead) happens in Westside Studios in London with Mike Hedges at the controls...

Robert, Simon and Jason also take part in an exclusive interview talking about the past, the present and the future

More details here as we get them...

Four other re-recorded songs (Three Imaginary Boys / Seventeen Seconds / Faith / Pornography) - also with Mike Hedges - are scheduled for an upcoming iTunes special...

The song feels a bit sluggish but the sight of just the three of them playing that song makes me all nostalgic.

Smith and Severin were already working together on the remaster by then, though (as cited on this thread!:)

(STEVE SEVERIN WILL BE JOINING THE CURE... OF COURSE HE WON'T... BUT THE BLUE SUNSHINE EXTRAS CD IS SHAPING UP VERY NICELY!)

I haven't heard the demos - is there really reason to doubt Severin's denial?
