Two big questions:
Why were we (Sightings/Tom Smith) asked to attend?
There are many possible motives. Primarily, Carlos is an avid and increasingly effective networker. He enjoys the music that he promotes. While he likely prefers Fe-Mail - who I found to be almost perversely inane - over Sightings, he recognizes a need for balance in curatorial presentations.
This is not meant as a slag against Mr. Giffoni; No Fun is his baby, a reflection of his sensibilities. That I in no way share that aesthetic (except, of course, within the narrow aperture of coincidence) is ultimately of little import.
(I congratulate CG for another successful effort, and bade him not to ask me back should he in future ply more noise wares. 'Taint my milieu.)
Given the aforementioned discontinuities, why then did we agree to participate?
There are three excuses:
1) We took advantage of an opportunity to write and perform together again.
2) We knew how much fun it would be to blow three days of turgid, bellicose horseshit right out of the (Hook's fetid pools of standing) water.
3) We desired to celebrate Mark Morgan's return to the city after he'd endured five months of stewed carrots and Jesse McCartney mixtapes at a sordid Michigan teen ashram.
A prejudice often expressed:
I have long found noise music to be utterly, absolutely, intolerably dull. As hidebound as bluegrass (which I nonetheless enjoy), it is a joyless orthodoxy.
(Which may have been the point for Merzbow, but which seems to elude almost everyone else.)
It is to post-punk what Widespread Panic is to Albert Hofmann.
(In other words, not my cup of vermin. )
As I boarded my flight Monday morning at 6:15 AM, I found my biases had not been derailed.
Owing to our rehearsal schedule (and my general fatigue - no sleep Friday night), I saw only those performances occurring Sunday, March 20, and then only those after 9:30 PM.
None were in any way surprising, provocative, or stimulating. I found myself smiling the odd half-smile, but nothing more.
I would be remiss if I failed to note my regard of Joke Lanz (who I like very much as a person and performer), the members of Double Leopards (they are to be lauded for their exploratory ethos, regardless of the set they delivered Sunday - I'd love to work with them, although after reading this I fear they may not vouchsafe my calling card), and Peter Rehberg (whose duet with Lasse Marhaug was a godawful bore, but whose care in the selection and processing of sounds should not be undervalued).
Pita, most distressingly, cannot look you in the eye during a conversation. Always a warning sign. (Decent chap, though, and all that.)
I enjoyed seeing certain of my friends at the venue, but I was otherwise wholly disengaged from the event. I brought a good book.
End of scene report!
End of scene? Of course not. As we have learned from decades of zombie flicks, the dead, inevitably, become ambulatory. Noise has been dead forever. It has shambled many thousands of miles; it utters its baleful moan, and it congregates with others of its unfortunate ilk.
Me? I prefer John Philip Sousa.
His compositions were crippling in their martial hysteria. "U.S. Field Artillery March"? Total badass.
PS: Did anyone else notice how much weight John Olson has put on? (Canseco jabs, or marriage flab?) And that his new look (Tiny Tim, circa 1971) is marvelous?
Love,
TS

Excepter: they are ILXors.
Coughs: i played a show with them once. they are decent live. the record is kinda... meh. no reason to listen to it, really.
Ultralyd: don't know 'em.
The White Mice: i love this band. i haven't heard the load LP, but I hope the fidelity on it is better than their preveious CDr/tape releases (and i expect it it.) they absolutely DESTROY live. great fun. red lights, dream machine, lab coats, giant mouse head masks, electronic destruction + black metal.

Nathaniel, I have a MUCH OLDER sister. Really this isn't about her, it's about defending a music that has "made me" into who I am. If you can't see the expressiveness of a Luminous Orange or other top offering, and you can only focus on taking advantage of the flesh of my family, then I know what kind of people are on this message board -- JOKERS like you.

This is the focus here -- the music -- on ILX as well as many of our LIVES. So when it becomes name-calling or hate-posting, as on so many of these threads, talking about sisters or just underestimating your partners in conversation, we are not moving anywhere.
Could we talk about Luminous Orange -- wondering if anyone has live albums...

Luminous Orange have ever released 5 albums and sold more than 20,000 copies in total in Japan. Also, "DROP YOU VIVID COLOURS" album have distributed by Tonevendor USA web site and got good reaction in United States by Guitar Rock fans.

1992-1995 - Formed in Yokohama, Japan in 1992 by Rie Takeuchi who had been influenced by Claude Dewbussy and Gabriel Faure, she wanted to create her own style which is different from rock'n'roll format based on 3 chords, and she was creating her own way of song writing by delicate melodies and structures, given a hint by famous UK band called Pale Saints. Participated many compilation albums.
1996 - a debut album "VIVID SHORT TRIP" released by a label called CREAM CONE, Ian Masters (from Pale Saints) and DJ Q-HEY participates to the recording.
1997 - they released their second album "WAITING FOR SUMMER".Their new sound trial by reducing feedback noise & distortion sound was one of the biggest topic of the album. They had very first tour in LONDON supported by Ian Masters, and first release in UK "PUPPY DOG MAIL e.p." was out.
1998 - A bass player Taro Nisawa joined the band, and released straight ahead pop flavoured 3rd album "SUGARCOATED" from INPARTMAINT.While Keigo Oyamada of Cornelius offered them to join his compilation "Prego!99!. so they did.
1999 - The album "luminousorangesuperplastic", the first edition of "Plastic Series" was released from CREAM CONE. although it was released from a small independent label &there was no ads, it turned out to be a great success.
2000 - The album "luminousorangesugarplastic", the second of "Plastic Series" was released from TRATTORIA label. Ahito Inazawa (ex NUMBER GIRL) and Naoki Hirai (participated ORIGINAL LOVE, BOOM BOOM SATTELITES) joined the recording. The band joined the VELVET UNDERGROUND's tribute album for the song "Sunday Morning" with Jim O'rouke, The Pastels. 2001 - Started recording their new album with help by Ahito Inazawa & Kentaro Nakao from Number GIrl but the project had to stop because of dissolution of TRATTORIA label-it was being run by Cornelius. In September, they were to leave for NY to join "CMJ Music Maratthon Artist Showcase 2001" but due to 9.11 attack their flight was cancelled so that they couldn't make it. Neverthless these troubles, the band started again and almost finished the recording of "Drop You Vivid Colours" by themselves.
2002 - The album "DROP YOU VIVID COLOURS" released from INPARTMAINT inNovember 25th and had made great success in market and got many goodcritics, charted on 4th of Tower Record's indie rock chart,6th of Japan Count Down Indie rock chart, etc. This, their latest album keeps good sales after 1 year & half passed.?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@?@

I notice a lot of ILE/ILM poster bashing there, which is a bit odd, given that people there who are nicer to those targets within ILE and ILM will rip them apart on the noise board despite both of them being public... Having a met a few of these people in person before and getting along with them just fine, it's a bit odd, sad, and disappointing. (and if i get mocked over there for saying this, so be it.)

1. They have no sense of humor.
2. Their substitute for a sense of humor is enthusiasm for mediocrity.
3. They don't seem very bright.

I disagree with all three. That's a subjective case-by-case thing though.

This is a reason to be hated? I wish ILE and ILX did that!

i was kidding. actually, at this point, board 86 would profit from a more rigid member selection, preferably combined with deletion of all threads, and a new start based on the myth of the old board

well if you look closer you'll see I didn't mean that everyone who posts on the noize board fits that description.
my close reading skills have failed me in this case, i fear.

I don't remember any instances of something being deleted from the Noise Board because it supposedly made someone look stupid.

Back in the days of old ILX (RIP) I deleted several entire threads because they made me or other people look dumb. Mostly me.
