Eulogy to DJ Harvey - unsung second greatest DJ of all times

So it must have sucked to be you because the audiences over the years in Brighton or South London, Tokyo or California maybe they didn't have the ears, the attention, the sheer span - how could they? - to bear to hear it all, all of it, the deep down depths of it, the sheer funky librarian genius of it, the alientation, the lizard brain connection, the fucking rightness of the deeper sound so many have reached for that only you have plucked form radnom obliteration and have found and championed, the sound nobody can embrace, your sound, the right sound the sound of the perfect line that connects it all from that to this.

But lo, the message was truly the funkiness and it is overwhleming in its impact. And I am here to say Harvey baby, Harvey, holmes, no wonder the knickers come down! Beacuse you get there, after nerdy years of toil, you take it out and you blow it out and yes you became the second coming, the heir, the batton holder and its yours baby, and ours to share and you became the one who could go deeper and bring it back to the people.

Few can know this but I do. I hear it and I praise you for it. Now rest, rest, rest in the oblivion you have made home.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 23 July 2005 05:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Aww...I hope not. He's a really cool guy with some of the most amazing eyes ever. I haven't heard him DJ though, so I've got nothing on that front.

Candicissima (candicissima), Saturday, 23 July 2005 06:16 (eighteen years ago) link

as a dedicated disco and deep house freak, the suggestion hits me really hard. i hope he's not. so many amazing edits, amazing remixes - his remix of extended family's "ulysses" one of my favorite house tracks of all time, an endless layered samba breakdown over a thick vocoded vocal chorus, predating lopazz's "take me home" by what, ten years?

also his astounding dj mixes - his promo mixes for freshjive and sarcastic clothing were two of my favorite dj mixes of last year, throwing together funk (of the funkadelic variety, think EWF's "power"), heavy boogie rock ("space truckin"), prog rock (rush!!), disco and ambient library music.

whether he's passed or not, i hope someone compiles at least some of the awesome re-edits he put out on his black cock label.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 23 July 2005 06:26 (eighteen years ago) link

please can someone confirm or deny this? he is close friends with a friend of mine. it's too late tonight to call and find out... but i certainly hope this is not true. long live dj harvey : /

please tell me you are just messing around! he is also very close friends with a good friend of mine who is currently travelling around europe and would be devastated to hear this. in fact i am devastated if this is true. the man is a legend. craziest dj i have ever heard too.

There's an mp3 of Harvey's set at last summer's PS1 Warm Up (starting again this Saturday kids!) available here:

http://ps1.el.net/web/podcasts/dj_sessions/

Haven't downloaded the set yet, so no idea of the sound quality, but I remember the day he played as being a particularly good one.

vahid, yr email hasn't arrived yet, but the seek has come through once again. (v, are you on it?)

he did play quite an amazing set in detroit! has anyone here heard him play?

he plays at our bar every couple of months. actually we're trying to put together a night with him, rub n tug and tim love lee right now. that will be an AMAZING night. i once asked him what a record was and he answered 'i don't fucking care!' with a giant grin on his face... at first i was a bit bothered but then i realized i should take his advice and just get back to dancing.

his "lecture" at the red bull music academy event he took part in is hilarious! you can download it form their site, which i am too drunk to bother looking for right now.

That would be amazing. Rub-n-Tug easily the best party DJs in NYC right now. They have that special DJ 6th sense that allows them to know what tune the crowd wants to hear next before the crowd does. Every time I've seen them everyone in the room has been dancing like crazy.

i saw harvey play a beach party here in hawaii just three days ago. a half hour before sunset he put on E2-E4. about 25 minutes in i went up to him and asked, "are you going to play this one all the way through?" he smiled huge and replied "of course, man!" it was dark by the time the song's 58th minute rolled around. the mixture of an epic sunset with an epic track orchestrated by such a master selector created something hard to describe. it will probably remain one of my top 5 musical moments for the rest of my life.

he helped open a gallery/club in honolulu (that's on oahu) a few years back. its a lovely place with a rooftop garden, art on the walls, and great staff/managment in one of honolulu's oldest neighborhoods. i just moved here two months back, but it seems like he gets here three to four times a year- he seems to love surfing almost as much as music. he may play maui from time to time, but i didn't ask, so i can't say.

grady (grady), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 22:07 (seventeen years ago) link

he helped open a gallery/club in honolulu (that's on oahu) a few years back. its a lovely place with a rooftop garden, art on the walls, and great staff/managment in one of honolulu's oldest neighborhoods.

the question is: how is hawaii otherwise? i'm interested... cuz that sounds all right.

one of honolulu's oldest crack neighborhoods.

Confounded (Confounded), Thursday, 29 June 2006 09:23 (seventeen years ago) link

haha... yeah, its a bit of a dodgy neighborhood, but this article from a year ago kind of tries and lay out how its going through a regentrification/renewal.

otherwise, hawaii is great. for a city of just over a million people, honolulu has quite a lot to offer... and the countryside, beaches, mountains, rainforests and all that are just a few minutes away. its no new york or london, but it suits me fine so far.

also, the club has a website: www.thirtyninehotel.com.

i can't recall anything else he played- i'm not really the spotter type. i think i recognized a casino vs. japan track.

phil mison was there too, and they kind of tag-teamed saturday nite at the club and sunday afternoon on the beach. i hadn't heard phil before but really i liked his style. i guess he's famous for chill out stuff but he was playing disco bangers and totally working the party saturday nite. really fun stuff.

that picture up there is the actual sunset in question.

gary, you should def. come. the pictures of the last nye party look like it was a good time.

mizzell, Tuesday, 27 April 2010 18:53 (fourteen years ago) link

^ya, i'm not huge on the a-side but "little boots" is pretty great. is he officially associated with this new 'international feel' label? because all of their other releases have been excellent so far, including that rocha 12" from last year, the "woman of candy" one-sided thing, and a bunch of upcoming, unreleased stuff too. looks like the guys from quiet village are putting something out on the label- under the pseudonym 'maxxi & zeus'- that sounds like awesome ambient balearica based on the samples. also some edits, including something they did to klaus schulze's "tango-saty"- you can hear most of these on the if soundcloud page

a lagoon par la mer (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 27 April 2010 21:04 (fourteen years ago) link

i remember him saying he was frustrated that nobody could get a copy of the releases on whatever we want, so looks like this could just be a widely-distributed version of weww. which sounds great to me.

i think harvey is one of those djs that u never what u were going to get. or i should say you can know what you are going to get but its going to be contextual. i personally prefer his sarcastic parties where he plays for 10 hours and drops everything underneath the sun. in a club setting ive heard him drop house all night with a few italo tracks. it was cool but was nothing like seeing him drop e2-e4 as the sun is coming up in santa cruz.

take this with a huge grain of salt b/c, yknow, it came from the RA comments, but somebody was saying that they thought there was a 90% chance that "gentlemen's club" meant "harvey's living room". the only reason i even mention something from the RA comments is because of the mild possibility that this person actually knows harvey

I've seen harvey a few times, first was the basement of Centro Fly. That was a lot of fun.

Danny Wang was a big influence on me. I remember him djing at Open Air once, tiny "techno" club on St. Marks, back when there were "techno" clubs, real dot-com era, and they had all these video screens with animations on them. He played stuff like the 9 minute version of Passion by the Flirts and Zwei by Electric MInd. I still play that stuff a lot. Stuff like that and She Can't Love You by Chemise really sums up an era for me when I was first going out to like every time Morgan and Danny were djing and people were just starting to play italo again.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 12:47 (eleven years ago) link

The Sarcastic Disco volumes, the old mixes he did for Radio 1, Late Night Sessions, his Beats in Space mixes, I've got a few more somewhere but can't remember what they are. All the pre *the NAME the BRAND DJ HARVEY* stuff you'll find much better if you like your mixes straight up selections and straight mixing. After that it's all fancy mixers and tape effects and tripped out crusty vibes.

I think I'm alone in thinking that his RA 300 mix was like the best thing that site has ever done. Such a challenging and engaging mix, lots of weirdo deep noisy tribal stuff mixed and paced masterfully, lots of moments, a proper trip.

Didn't make it to the end of the show last night but had an absolute blast. He was playing Sapphire by Zombi when I walked in...hearing a record that sonically gorgeous on a soundsystem that good was pretty much orgasmic. He also dropped an insanely long/insanely incredible edit/remix of I'm a Man by Spencer Davis Group (which I think is the I'm a Man/Yeke Yeke single by Clubhouse) which absolutely destroyed the place. Yeah, great stuff, nice'n'housey at the start then went full on disco. The crowd were good too, pretty much everyone seemed to be there because they wanted to be there and not because it was the hottest ticket in town.

Obviously Harvey looked as cool as ever. Shame I wasn't allowed to thank him for giving up his time the other week to do the interview with me.

Any other ILXors there?

toby, Sunday, 21 October 2012 07:04 (eleven years ago) link

tracer hand and i were also there! he sacked off after a while but i stayed until about 4.30 making dancefloor-friends with strangers.

i thought the sound was good but it definitely depended on where you were in the room - there were a few places of gorgeous clarity, a few places with a bad echo, a few places where it was frankly tinny.

c sharp major, Sunday, 21 October 2012 22:11 (eleven years ago) link

I thought the sound was great but it was true there were "dead" spots, and sometimes a tall person would move in behind you and suddenly things would get muffled - it was a weird, morphing, multi-tentacled auditory experience which frankly seemed exactly appropriate

Harvey also used the volume knob, sometimes bringing the overall level down a bit for a good 10-15 minutes before slamming into something big; I thought it was tremendously effective and also made for a more convivial atmosphere in that you actually could chat with ppl from time to time

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 22 October 2012 08:52 (eleven years ago) link

I stayed to the end. He actually finished with Chilly, For Your Love, but then said thanks and yes, played Save a Prayer.

Album out this summer under the name Wildest Dreams. Apparently Harvey recorded it a few years ago but Smalltown Supersound are just now releasing it. There's a song on soundcloud called Last Ride. Cool song in the vein of Map of Africa.

mizzell, Friday, 2 May 2014 23:55 (nine years ago) link

A modern day equivalent of the L.A. wrecking crew, Wildest Dreams is the brainchild of DJ Harvey as a means to keep his multi-instrumentalist hand in, so to speak. Wildest Dreams make music inspired by the landscape of L.A and it surrounds for your road and acid trip. The self-titled album was recorded over a week a couple years ago and unearthed by Smalltown Supersound. It will be released July 29th.

DJ Harvey is a near mythical character whose musical style cannot simply be filed as eclectic or retrospective; he plays whatever he feels, as he feels it, but always for the crowd. He is an analogue loving DJ that utilizes reel to reel and effects all conjured live while not being afraid to also work new technology in the mix. He's respected and in demand all over the world. Best put by Rolling Stone when included in their "25 DJs That Rule The Earth," "If Keith Richards was a DJ, he'd totally be Harvey. A libertine Englishman turned California surfer dude, Harvey has been rocking dance floors since the 1980s with his ocean-deep collection of rare disco, Pink Floyd-y space rock, off-kilter techno and anything else danceable. Or as Harvey once said, 'You can't understand the blues until you've had your heart broken by a woman. And you can't understand my music until you've had group sex on Ecstasy.'"

mizzell, Friday, 2 May 2014 23:58 (nine years ago) link

Last Ride just sounds like an anonymous '70s deep album cut to me. Not really feeling it that much. It took a while for Map of Africa and Locussolus to grow on me though. Be interested to hear the rest of the record.

This documentary on Tonka was posted on Youtube last week, featuring a very young Harvey

He looked genuinely sad last night when he said "ahh, fuck, I'm 50, who cares what I think any more" lol

online hardman, Thursday, 19 June 2014 09:14 (nine years ago) link

wildest dreams sounds pretty hard like he bought another copy of fragile. i'm cool with it, except for "pleasure well", because look, harv, we've all heard "riders on the storm", OK?

rushomancy, Thursday, 19 June 2014 18:31 (nine years ago) link

when i saw him shortly after he turned 50 he remarked "it's not really the beginning of the end, it's just the end of the beginning"

Fantastic set last night. I'd say 95% of the crowd were over 40.

If you were there and can ID the track he played at about 10pm that had the INCREDIBLE 'I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you I loooooove you' chorus then I'll paypal you a quid.

online hardman, Friday, 20 June 2014 09:11 (nine years ago) link

How well did it work in a concert hall setting?

JLB Credit (Jack BS), Friday, 20 June 2014 09:23 (nine years ago) link

It was in the Spiegeltent rather than Southbank Centre/RFH - really weird atmosphere in that inside the tent it literally felt like 2/3am peak time stuff and the second you stepped outside it was still light. Mildly disorientating.

The "super gay disco experience" extended to a bloke wearing a veil waving flags about for a bit btw.

Cheers - what a record!

Anyone catch the UK tour? The Fabric set was a bit...sluggish.

online hardman, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 15:52 (nine years ago) link

was going to go but they switched to a worse venue & it was ~£25 which seemed v high risk so went to see daniel wang who was super high energy for £7 which seemed like a superior good times economy. apparently the harvey crowd was old but I'm not against that

ogmor, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 16:34 (nine years ago) link

i like the hyperbolic intro but fyi the venue he was involved with in Honolulu was not on the beach and wasn't a hotel (though it had the word "hotel" in its name) and he didn't run it

ah looking forward to checking this out. if any of you happen to be in ibiza i can't recommend the ibiza rocks residency he's doing enough. i had liked his mixes well enough until seeing him live but he did a six-hour set and it was absolutely perfect. didn't recognise a single track except for club tropicana, which i guess he played since the venue was where the video for that was shot.

Earlier this year, Skrillex launched his very first studio album by the name “Recess”. The album was released in March 14 2014 with a total of 11 track listings. Since its release, the album has performed quite well in various billboards making its best appearance at number three. The album has received its fair share of criticism as well as praise.

i might go to another one, he's playing the next three saturdays.

That Live At Rumors mix sounded lovely sitting in the sunshine with a gin at the weekend, it's maybe a bit more conventionally "dance music" than I would expect from him though
