he's supposedly playing a show in NYC as well @ anthology film archive.

dunno details as of yet, but i'm sure i'll go.
(though i still maintain that it is LAME to start playing after 20-odd years of seclusion.)

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 28 July 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Oh, paint your teeth.

Boring Satanic Space Jazz (sexyDancer), Thursday, 28 July 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

if you wanna live,
DON'T paint yer teeth.

do you want to eat acid before we go see jandek, snapp-o?

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 28 July 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

the nyc tix will be on sale soon, at anthology and other music. if i can somehow get a ton of money all of a sudden, i want to go to the austin show.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

jandek's more of a vicodin/xanax kinda chap

Boring Satanic Space Jazz (sexyDancer), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

yeah...Jandek is a "sellout" for playing LIVE. Next thing you know he'll be in a Burger King commercial.

Hardy har har.

I hope he plays some recognizable stuff. I'm excited.

"(though i still maintain that it is LAME to start playing after 20-odd years of seclusion.) "

Come on, this is indie rock's Boo Radley. Don't you appreciate Harper Lee's "To Kill A Mockingbird"?

hhattf, Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

dvds, dude.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

though i still maintain that it is LAME to start playing after 20-odd years of seclusion.

Proof that it was an intentional concept/gimmick from the beginning, imo. It took time, but he had that. I think he realized he didn't have the confidence or talent to just start playing that stuff live, but if he could build this mysterious persona, using the qualities he did have, eventually there might be an audience of people ready for him.

All Along The Clickcount, Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

It's certainly not "proof" of this theory. Seems like a very cynical characterization of the whole thing. Why?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Why else? People make music to be heard and he put his face all over plenty of them, so he definitely wanted recognition.

All Along The Clickcount, Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

what, a twenty year plan to play a handfull of SMALL VENUES in front a FEW HUNDRED PEOPLE??

Boring Satanic Space Jazz (sexyDancer), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, exactly. And your think about him lacking the confidence or talent to play live before this is pure speculation also (and strikes me as cynical).

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

what, a twenty year plan to play a handfull of SMALL VENUES in front a FEW HUNDRED PEOPLE??

Not very strange. He's got a legacy and he's a legend and all before he's dead. And a theatrical release and DVD.

What's your belief? He just had to get his music "out there?" Why? Not for recognition? Not to make contact with people? That's nonsense.

It's about the way I've approached my own recording career before I ever heard of Jandek, but I did not mastermind it to the extremes he did by sending out faithfully each year to college radio stations a new mysterious album.

All Along The Clickcount, Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

who cares? i just wanna see him play.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

You care.

All Along The Clickcount, Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

"What's your belief? He just had to get his music "out there?" Why? Not for recognition? Not to make contact with people? That's nonsense."

No. Did I say this? I was just responding to your silly post about how we now have the obvious PROOF that JANDEK HAD PLOTTED THIS ALL ALONG.

He's had plenty of press recognition since the '80s and Corwood always seemed to be aware of it.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

naw, the only thing i care about is seeing jandek live, hopefully in austin where one of my friends is playing with him. i could give a fuck about "masterminding to the extreme," brophy. sounds like a little um "amateur jealousy" (it sure ain't professional) on your part, trollbro.

You caught me!

jandek (dr g), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

Jandek seems at this point to be pretty aware of himself, not just as a performer with an audience, but also as a human dealing with the nature of his obsession vis a vis his romantic relationships. In this excerpt from "You Took Me For a Ride," from a recent cd "When I Took That Train," Jandek addresses his new lover's perceived acceptance of his nature as a visionary:

I got so many things
They just don’t have an end
They keep going
Forever and ever, and
I appreciate you got a mind
That understands
It keeps going in a spiral, and
You wanna be on that path, and
I got the directions on how to get there
We will go

Later on the cd, in the song, "Wouldn't You Agree," Jandek again hopes for a lover's acceptance of his position as avatar:

Even though I can be anything to you
I’m a rock
That doesn’t change
Somewhere in, you know that
And that’s what you like about me
I’m a rock
And I’m not gonna change for nobody
No thing
Because it’s all about God
It’s all about God, and
That’s really where I am, but I’m
Sure leading a physical life here
And I’m perfectly happy to give it all to you
Unconditional, unconditional
I’ll be what you want

Hardly seems cynical, just aware.

Boring Satanic Space Jazz (sexyDancer), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

OUch, I am so hurt, hstencil. By the way, yes you do care.

Logged out does not equal troll, fucktard.

All Along The Clickcount, Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

you can't convince me that i care! hahaha. also, you can't convince me you're not a troll. or at least, a moron.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

h, who is playing w/ him in Austin?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Fine, have it your way. I'm a troll. Guess I'll go on a little trolling spree, then... please watch for several threads to be trolled shortly.

Oh, and by the way, A) yes you do care and B) you're the moron.

All Along The Clickcount, Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

*sigh*

tim, i'm not sure if the lineup has been announced yet, so i don't think i can say anything just yet.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Well, I would say that I care. I care that you cynically decided to characterize his whole career as a "gimmick."

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Not just a gimmick. You latched onto the word because it has negative connotations for you. Before the word "gimmick" were the words "intentional concept."

All Along The Clickcount, Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

Dude, your post struck me as cynical, OK? And there's no proof to your assertions.

And Jandek is cool.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

You think he just kept pressing albums, shipping them to every record store he could, sending them to anyone who paid attention, maintaining utter secrecy and all that because he WAS confident enough to play live and DIDN'T have a plan?

All Along The Clickcount, Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

I think it's this weird art project. I see no reason to assume that he'd given a whole lot of thought to playing live over the years.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

I think he had a professional life and there was no way he wanted to be publicly associated with it unless it was somewhat successful. Then it's, "Hey, look at what I did" instead of "hey, I'm a freak."

All Along The Clickcount, Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

And I wasn't trying to say the goal was to play live, but to appear publicly eventually, if it was warranted. I don't think the goal was to release all of these and then die anon. Although, that's the genius of that plan, too. There would be a great mystery left behind if he did die unrecognized.

All Along The Clickcount, Thursday, 28 July 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

The question still remains as to whether he will ever really talk. Or the extent to which he's talked already to people he's been involved with - people like Richard Youngs for the Scottish gigs (who I believe is still mum about everything?).

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 28 July 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Performing live is the goal of the Jandek 20 Year Plan. The autobiography and press tour are the goals of the Jandek 40 Year Plan.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 28 July 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

it was a little unbelievable to hear that he had played live. but what the hell. there is a time for everything, i suppose. i used to theorize that he worked for a church, and that's why he didn't want people knowing about his devil music. i'm probably way off though.

This ain't a song for the broken-hearted
No silent prayer for the faith-departed
I ain't gonna be just a face in the crowd
You're gonna hear my voice
When I shout it out loud

[Chorus:]
It's my life
It's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just wanna live while I'm alive
It's my life

This is for the ones who stood their ground
For Tommy and Gina who never backed down
Tomorrow's getting harder make no mistake
Luck ain't even lucky
Got to make your own breaks

[Chorus:]
It's my life
And it's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
'Cause it's my life

Better stand tall when they're calling you out
Don't bend, don't break, baby, don't back down

[Chorus:]
It's my life
And it's now or never
'Cause I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive

[Chorus:]
It's my life
And it's now or never
'Cause I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
'Cause it's my life!

i have this suspicion that jandek-in-person is sort of inevitably going to be disappointing. he'll look like that aging hipster dude who pumps his fist in the air a little too ostentatiously at local rock shows.

or maybe not.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 29 July 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

the notion that Jandek planned to play live after building a near-microscopic cult following over the course of 20 years is so sad & X-Files that it boggles the mind. Occam's Razor=simplest explanation, best explanation: for 20 years, he really didn't want to play live. Then, probably after seeing "Jandek On Corwood," he did - he thought about things in ways he hadn't before.

'Masterminded.' Oh man that is a riot.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Friday, 29 July 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

the notion that Jandek planned to play live after building a near-microscopic cult following over the course of 20 years is so sad & X-Files that it boggles the mind.

You're stupid and naive.

Occam's Razor=simplest explanation, best explanation: for 20 years, he really didn't want to play live.

Occam's Razor = simplest explanation, he released the material deliberately in this manor to develop a cult following. Outsider art becomes appreciated for what it is. Jandek gets accepted on his own terms.

Then, probably after seeing "Jandek On Corwood," he did - he thought about things in ways he hadn't before.

The time had come. He probably thought all he'd do was the interview he did a few years back... the one in which he acted like a nervous, self-conscious freak who would be terrified to play on stage without lots of reassurance about his art. The internet, the article, the movie all gave him that. Of course, his first shows had to be completely unannounced because he's terrified. Yeah, he's easing into it and enjoying it all his own way, according to plan.

Oh ya stupid fuck, Friday, 29 July 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

hahaha, you know what, I fuckin LOVE Jandek; have about 20 or so Corwood originals, the whole nine yards...

but this:

sending out faithfully each year to college radio stations a new mysterious album

is very very OTM

I mean, at the very least, we are not talking about some kind of clueless invalid outsider here. This is a very VERY savvy person.

Who happens to kick massive amounts of personal vision ass.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 29 July 2005 03:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I think it's great. And I think it's hilarious that people are offended by the notion that the guy had a vision for his musical persona. I mean, you do the best with what you have, right? He's not Gene Simmons. He's a sensitive artist type who makes beautifully disturbing music.

Thank You Stormy Davis, Friday, 29 July 2005 03:41 (twenty years ago)

it's so funny though; I worked as "music director" at a college station for a few years, and it was like clockwork: once or twice a year, a new Jandek LP appeared. Not one, but TWO Jandek LPs appeared!!

Completely unsolicited, of course.

So, in my capacity as music director, I pocketed that second copy. You better believe. "You Walk Alone"? "One Foot in the North"? Thanks, Janks, for the free copies! And yeah, I proselytized like a mofo!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 29 July 2005 04:02 (twenty years ago)

"the interview he did a few years back... the one in which he acted like a nervous, self-conscious freak who would be terrified to play on stage"

I don't remember getting that impression from the article. Haven't read it in a while, though.

ghetty green (eman), Friday, 29 July 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

I unwittingly caught Jandek's first ever performance in Glasgow last year. I have to admit I hadn't ever heard of him before. He wasn't on the bill, nobody was allowed to know who he was (although when he played the rumours started going round). The set was pretty heavy and noisy, with Richard Youngs and Alex Neilson (in particular) providing much more than accompaniment.
But then he performed again a few months ago, playing grand piano, although that was a one off apparently.
The theory about him building the myth seems a little far fetched. According to Barry Esson, the curator of Instal, Jandek just hadn't been given "certain assurances" before. You can read my interview here...

Occam's Razor = simplest explanation, he released the material deliberately in this manor to develop a cult following. Outsider art becomes appreciated for what it is. Jandek gets accepted on his own terms.

when Jandek started recording, the term "outsider art" didn't even exist, you dumb fuck.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Friday, 29 July 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

(also, revisit Occam's Razor: your explanation isn't the simplest by a long stretch. It's the one that satisfies the idea you brought to the table, not the one that the data suggests.)

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Friday, 29 July 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Bananas Excrement,

OH you stupid crazy shitass moron, as if I was implying that Jandek was attempting to adhere to a predetermined standard called "outsider art." The term was invented for people like Jandek because people like Jandek exist, you stupid fucking piece of shit.

Occam's Razor revisited: yeah, you're right. People always promote their band with singularity of purpose for decades because they don't want to develop a following. Not surprising that you would choose the Nutrament that has the flavor of Circus Peanuts for your name. Nuts, Bananas, you're definitely out of your fuckin' mind.

I am very proud of you for beind so proud you can't acknowledge when you're wrong.

By sending copies to college radio but none for review. Yup, that's a brill promotional strategy all right.

The term Outsider Art was coined by art critic Roger Cardinal in 1972 as an English synonym for Art Brut (which literally translates as "Raw Art" or "Rough Art"), a label created by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture; Dubuffet focused particularly on art by insane asylum inmates.

...In the years since Outsider Art has emerged as a successful art marketing category (an annual Outsider Art Fair has taken place in New York since 1992) the term is sometimes applied as a catch-all marketing label for art created by people outside the "art world" mainstream, regardless of their circumstances or the content of their work.

damn you sad guy, damn you to hell

Listen
I know it’s been a long time.
You’ve lost that look in your eye.
The one that told me everything was fine without a word.
But now we’re standing face to face,
with nothing left to say but goodbye to yesterday.

I don’t know if I can make it.
I don’t know if I’m that strong.
I don’t know where we went wrong but somehow it’s over.
In my mind I see you clearly.
In my dreams I feel you near me.
I want to know, does this feeling go away?

Like shooting stars we shine and then we fade,
breaking the promises we made.
What about the promises?
What about the promises we made?
What about our plans for forever?
Did they scare you?
Did you need to get away?

You taught me many things.
Like how it feels to miss someone so bad it feels like a part of you is missing.
I can tell you one thing.
Now that you have gone I never will forget you.
You left your mark.

When I have gone and you’ve moved on will you remember me?

no one understands my pain

You touch her skin and then you think
That she is beautiful but she don't mean a thing to me.
Yeah, she is beautiful but she don't mean a thing to me.

I spent two weeks in Silverlake
The California sun cascading down my face
There was a girl with light brown streaks,
And she was beautiful but she didn't mean a thing to me.
Yeah, she was beautiful but she didn't mean a thing to me.

I wanted to believe in all the words that I was speaking,
This is the moment that you know
That you told her that you loved her but you don't.

I wanted to believe in all the words that I was speaking,
As we moved together in the dark
And all the friends that I was telling
All the playful misspellings
and every bite I gave you left a mark

Tiny vessels oozed into your neck
And formed the bruises
That you said you didn't want to fade
But they did, and so did I that day

All I see are dark grey clouds
In the distance moving closer with every hour
So when you ask "Is something wrong?"
I think "You're damn right there is but we can't talk about it now.
No, we can't talk about it now."

So one last touch and then you'll go
And we'll pretend that it meant something so much more
But it was vile, and it was cheap
and you are beautiful but you don't mean a thing to me
yeah you are beautiful but you don't mean a thing to me

I got back in my dream
And I’m dreaming forever
Woo, I’m awake
I’m sleeping in the wake-time
I’m awake in my sleep
I got my fingers wet
There was a lot of rain
It was pouring bottles
And those cold bottles
Got my fingers wet
But I’ll bet the glass you got
Puts a liquid in you
And then you’re fluid
I got me my mechanical produced beverage
I know my liquids
I guess I’ll duck in from the storm
And I’ll let those bottles crash down in the street
The streets of mercy
Smashing all those bottles
On the pavement in the rain
I won’t drive my car for the rest of the day
I’ll think about breathing
And watch the air rustle about
Bye-bye, you Sunday

COME BACK, TROLL MAN WHO REVEALED TO US THE SECRET HEART OF ILX AND THE MYSTERY OF JANDEK! COME BACK OR I WILL LISTEN TO THE PROMISE RING!

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Hey John
My eyes have been crying
And we’ve been making (?)
Coffee’s no good in the morn’
Beer ain’t no good at night
Ah, hey John
The theater’s been dripping
The movie’s 3-D
There’s two rides to Texas
547-3668
Ah, hey John
The rifle in the closet is just the name of the song
The rifle in the closet is just the name of my song
Hey John

YOU COULD HAVE SAVED ME

We could do more outdoor things,
if we weren't so busy getting busy.
Doing laundry finally,
the first sign of first light,
still nothing to wear between us.
Now I am so filled with just one girl my eyes barely open
and I can barely read.
So this is the end of the past,
the first sign of first light,
its alright between us.
I got my body and my mind on the same page
and now happiness is all the rage.
Still nothing to wear between us.
Happiness is all the rage.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Friday, 29 July 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

First you made me promise that I wouldn’t leave
Then I found my freedom
Gone floatin’ down a river to Madrid
Lost some lovely on the way
You gave them back I heard you say
You’re my only lover
Like a kangaroo I’m only half doing what I do
Jesus stares at me from the wall
And I think I like your bosom
Aw gone floatin’ down a river to Madrid
Ahh, you hear my music
Oh, lord I think it’s hard to tell
How she followed me here

Are you gonna live your life wonderin' standing in the back
lookin' around?
Are you gonna waste your time thinkin' how you've grown up or
how you missed out?
Things are never gonna be the way you want.
Where's it gonna get you acting serious?
Things are never gonna be quite what you want.
Or even at 25, you gotta start sometime.
I'm on my feet, I'm on the floor, I'm good to go.
Now all I need is just to hear a song I know.
I wanna always feel like part of this was mine.
I wanna fall in love tonight.
Are you gonna live your life standing in the back looking
around?
Are you gonna waste your time?
Gotta make a move or you'll miss out.
Someone's gonna ask you what it's all about.
Stick around nostalgia won't let you down.
Someone's gonna ask you what it's all about.
Whatcha gonna have to say for yourself?
I'm on my feet, I'm on the floor, I'm good to go.
Now all I need is just to hear a song I know.
I wanna always feel like part of this was mine.
I wanna fall in love tonight.
Crimson and clover, over and over.
Crimson and clover, over and over.
Our house in the middle of the street, why did we ever meet?
Started my rock 'n roll fantasy.
Don't don't, don't let's start, why did we ever part?
Kick start my rock 'n rollen heart.
I'm on my feet, I'm on the floor, I'm good to go.
So come on Davey, sing me somethin' that I know.
I wanna always feel like part of this was mine.
I wanna fall in love tonight.
Here tonight.
I wanna always feel like part of this was mine
I wanna fall in love tonight.

HEY! I don't even know who the Promise Ring is and I all I know about Emo is that it is short for Emotional Rock, I guess, but I always associate the term with Fugazi, whom I dislike aside from 13 Songs if my memory serves me well and now you can go back to being the losers you know you are deep down in your heart of hearts.

I'm glad to see someone has named himself after my comments about Sonic Youth-Zorn-Occult-Jazz. My influence grows stronger every day. :)
