What happened to The Shins Will Change Your Life?

My favorite blog, The Shins Will Change Your Life (inderock4eva.blogspot) seems to have moved or shut down. Does anyone know what happened to it? Is it cached somewhere?

That site did serve a purpose, though. It could have become, or maybe even became, a disciplining agent - I'm sure it briefly forced some people we all know to think twice before unloading the next batch of hyperbole...

We can relive past glories on here:

http://www.livejournal.com/users/indierock4eva/

It starts with a bang and ends with a whimper. Structure becomes shrapnel, air becomes fire, people become obituaries. Everyone-even the most candyass of heart, those who dare not think in curse words let alone utter them-reacts the same way: You motherfuckers.

When the London Underground came under attack earlier this month by Islamic killbots purchasing four tickets to Allah's bootycall with a backpack of C-4, I know the first thing you thought and the last thing you'd ever admit: God save the Libertines.

That may be the single worst piece of music writing I've ever seen.

"The Shins Will Change Your Life was the clarion call for a new generation of writers, its utter brilliance demanding all readers take notice of its talents. To even be allowed to view it was to sense that beauty had finally ripped into your pathetic soul."

Probably the most offensive, sure. The worst, however, is this (punctuation preserved):

Au Revoir Simone, the all girl, Brooklyn-based trio, wants you to be their fan. Go ahead and do it. Combining whispery vocals and sparse electric keyboard pop, you'll like it.

(an intro to an interview, no less. from the Deli, New York's increasingly laughable scenester rag).

Well, if we're to read it literally, this means that, whilst you combine your own whispery vocals with keyboard pop, you will simultaneously experience affection toward Au Revoir Simone.

i don't know where it's gone, but i have to say that tswcyl was terrific, a one-stop source for all the best and most critically-acclaimed albums in the whole world of music. it turned me on to so many awesome cds-- real, meaningful, experimental cds that weren't getting the attention they so richly deserved.

it's funny to mention zach braff, because did you know the site got its name from his movie, garden state? there's a scene where natalie portman plays "new slang" by the shins and says "listen to this, it'll change your life." it's a really awesome scene.

I was actually curious to see how ILM would react to trixing in the other direction. But as you can see, I make a very poor troll. Person behind this site is someone whose full name contains thirteen letters -- to which I say fuck yes, I just knew it was Britney Spears. From what I was given to understand, it's someone in the thirteen-letter spot, yes, with five of the letters being proper everyday vowels, though only three different vowels appear (two appear twice); two letters extend above the middle line, and one extends below the bottom (not counting caps, obviously).

nabiscothingy, Sunday, 14 August 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

Are we classifying "y" as a vowel?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 14 August 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

Five vowels, two letters extend above the line (h,b), one below (y)!

Although only one vowel repeats. And then there's the question of "y" being a vowel or not.

First of all, the profession of music writing-or as goes the famous quote, dancing about architecture-has been brought low by years of editorial neglect, forced to subsist on a low-wage diet of beer money, free records and a pat on the head. Thus it no longer attracts the best and brightest. So there's that.

This man and his dubious grasp of grammar must be killed. He writes like a mid-90s Doctor Who novelist.

THE ROLLING JUDGEMENT NIGHT 4EVA 2005 THREAD

from launch:

Canadian punk act Sum 41 will serve as the backup band for rapper Ludacris when he performs his single, "Get Back," on the January 22 edition of NBC-TV's Saturday Night Live, according to MTV.com. Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley said, "We had originally planned on recording a track together about three or four years ago, for the Spider-Man soundtrack, but our schedules could never connect. So when we heard about the opportunity to back him up, we said 'yeah' right away."

always read it right after 'go fug yourself'

(an intro to an interview, no less. from the Deli, New York's increasingly laughable scenester rag).

as a word of defense, give it some time to grow some legs. it's hardly on issue three.

katie, a princess (katie, a princess), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

As a word of offense, no I won't. The whole principle of the magazine is that it will not publish negative reviews: it "celebrates a scene," and thus critiques only by omission. With that in mind, it's doomed from step one.

It also openly offers bands half-page interviews in exchange for giving the Deli the proceeds from a show.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

The whole principle of the magazine is that it will not publish negative reviews: it "celebrates a scene," and thus critiques only by omission.

i'd say about 99% of all free alt-weeklies' local music coverage operates on this same principle, whether it's explicitly stated or not.

and, it's not necessarily a bad way of going about business, what with a billion bands in every town and very limited space.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, the Voice is sometimes pretty brutal to local bands (when it deigns to blurb them). In a way, this helps its credibility.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

from what i read on a regular basis...mostly city pages obv. but also the memphis flyer and seattle weekly with some regularity, i'd say VV is probably the exception in that....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

doomed in what sense? financially or laughability? i'm assuming you mean both.

i'm interested to see what happens to it, especially since i think they're starting to build an archive of new nyc bands and what they sound like, which i don't necessarily see anybody else doing. then again, i've only been living here for a year and a half. any place you can point me that does this?

while i definitely concede that some writers can't review their way out of a bathroom (and also concede that i've done a thing or two for them, a claim that may or may not be mutually exclusive from the first, um, concession), they also, to my knowledge, don't omit anybody from the magazine that submits a record for review, even if it takes a year to get a word in and even if they're crap (and boy, boy there is some crap in there). they've also got some decent people who edit and wanna build it into something more than a fart-worthy "scenester rag."

as for the travesty of the show proceeds, a lot of bands play for free in this city; are you angry about the pay-for-play of it or does it concern you that they're open about the policy rather than keeping it in the dark? just curious.

katie, a princess (katie, a princess), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

oh...i didn't read that close enough...pay for play (or coverage) sux...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

Katie, we're on the same page; I did some stuff for them too, and would love to see them succeed, but Paolo needs to get a little (okay, a lot) more discriminating in some of his choices.

As for pay-for-paly, I guess I'm an idealist but I would be rather upset to find out that, say, Pitchfork directly propositions bands to cough up ads and/or donations in exchange for a place in the "Best New Music" column.

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 16 August 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

Paolo needs to get a little (okay, a lot) more discriminating in some of his choices.

totally. i see what he's trying to avoid with the choice to run everything, and God bless him for trying to be a purist, but someday its gonna stop. i like that deli longs to be a local presence, rather than be a local pretentiousness. i think it has places to go from its shaky first issues.

and, hell, on the half-pagers, paolo's own band (amongst other editors' bands) got half-pagers. i don't think the dude is trying to hide anything about the "editorial process." ;)

the pay for play thing is crappy, most def. alls i knows is that a rag like that isn't ever gonna generate much ad rev. and right now, its people's own capital and the events that are gonna keep it going. i thought in this case, though, the bands got a half-page and THEN are asked to play. i know for sure they did a thing on inouk and when they asked if inouk wanted to do a show, they said no... the piece ran anyway. as for their covers, i think the devil wins on that one.

This is the theme to Garry's show
The theme to Garry's show
Garry called me up and asked if I would write his theme song
I'm almost halfway finished
How do you like it so far
How do you like the theme to Garry's show?

This is the theme to Garry's show
The opening theme to Garry's show
This is the music that you hear
As you watch the credits
I'm almost to the part
Of where I start to whistle
Then we'll watch It's Garry Shandling's Show

[whistle solo]

This is the theme to Garry Shandling's show

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 30 September 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

"Not all accolades are necessarily Gift of Gab's though, as Xcel continues to push the envelope and 'crafts' some of hip-hop's most blended and distinctive sounds to date."

The writing above is pretty flat, but surely there's a bigger villain than this for them to take down...?

Then again, I barely know this blog's reputation.

What came first, the blog, the line in Garden State, or the review?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 29 January 2007 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think I've read a single review of the new album that hasn't referenced the Garden State line. Barf.

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 00:03 (nineteen years ago)

One time I checked the "google blog" RSS feed thing and discovered the author's name was right at the top of every entry. "Now I know why Slocki was going insane," I thought.

Anyhow, the identity revealed!

Last night I had wonderful braised beef shins for dinner and I kept enthusing about them and trying to offer tastes to my fellow eaters, and cracking myself up.
