Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:07 (twenty years ago)

Awwwww yeah. I'm in.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to play this time, I think.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

Are we back? Oh nice!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

May I?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

AND YOU ARE?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

If enough people want to revive it then I'm back in.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

AND YOU ARE?

-- Ned Raggett (ne...), August 16th, 2005. (later)

*runs crying out of room*

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

yeah!

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

I figure we're back whenever we wanna be back. So, it looks like we're back.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

I wanna play this time!

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

But seriously, I'd love to contribute, if y'all will let the new kid play.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

The only barrier I can see to adding new folks is getting them permission to post at the blog. Wasn't it Jody who actually set all that up and has admin powers there etc.?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

i'm interested in this.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

me too, I was on the list for the last one.

haitch has some respect for artists (haitch), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Oh God yes, count me back in.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I want in too!

Candicissima (candicissima), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

I would like to be back in as well.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

i'll participate, but it would be cool if someone else would run it this time.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

also, it'd be great if we could use the blogspot address again, to keep everything in one place.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

i'll participate again as well.

tricky (disco stu), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

i do have a few suggestions for whoever takes over:

pacing is everything -- if the project goes on for too long, all the steam will go out of it, it won't be fun anymore, etc. try to keep things going on a fairly rapid schedule. also, realize that several of the people who sign up won't be able to go, for various reasons (hey, real life can get in the way of things), so don't push too hard to get people to post, just move on to the next willing participant.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm happy to play another round. Nominations for a theme, anybody? I'll offer "Around the World in 80 Minutes" as a starter.

Shockah Shockah Hey!!! (noodle vague), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to play.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

I guess I'll volunteer to run the thing, since I suggested the revival. Jody, can you add me to the blog admin list?

(with permission of the room, natch)

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

I think I might join in the fun.

Ian Riese-Moraine: a casualty of social estrangement. (Eastern Mantra), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

austin, welcome to admin-hood!

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

yay! looking forward to more ilmixes.

gspm (gspm), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!

Okay, so far those expressing interest are (And forgive me if I get some names wrong - all this variable sigs and emails stuff sometimes confuses me):

Me
MCD
Tom
Tantrum
Ned
Mind in Rewind
Alex
Dan Perry
Ian Johns0n
Haitch
Mike t-diva
Candicissima
Jordan
Jody
Tricky
Noodle
Walter Krantz
Ian Reese-Moraine
(xpost) and Sean

That's 18 19, so a good start on a first disc, and maybe well into a second depending on how long tracks posted are.

So far the only theme mentioned is "Around the World in 80 minutes" which sounds promising to me.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I dig that theme.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Great theme: ta for that, Mr. Noodle.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to join too, if it's possible.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 08:18 (twenty years ago)

add me please.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

can someone explain the rules? or is it like mornington crescent?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Charlie:

I don't know what mornington crescent is, but this is how we ILMix. Once we decide on a theme (and I think we're about there) we'll decide on an order in which to play, then start creating a playlist one at a time by posting mp3s of our selected songs on the blog. If you don't have webspace for this, there are a couple of work-arounds. One of them is getting someone to loan you webspace, the other is using a shared gmail account. Most folks not only post a song selection to the blog, but also include some 'liner notes' as well. Each person builds off what has come before, just like in any old dj situation you want to create some flavor of continuity to build a whole that is greater than it's parts, so it's best not to get hung up on wanting to post a particular track until your turn comes up - it might be chosen by someone else before then, or just not work with the intro you're given. Anyway, the process is repeated until we near the 80 minute mark, and then themes change (or not) and we begin a new CDs worth of ILMixing.

This idea is a variation on a game a group of my friends would play in the early 90s where we'd pass a blank cassette around between us adding a song each until it filled up.

Current roster:

Me
MCD
Tom
Tantrum
Ned
Mind in Rewind
Alex
Dan Perry
Ian Johns0n
Haitch
Mike t-diva
Candicissima
Jordan
Jody
Tricky
Noodle
Walter Krantz
Ian Reese-Moraine
Sean
Tuomas
Colin
Charlie (I think)

I think we should hold it here, and see how far this takes us.

Could anyone here who hasn't posted to the ilmixor blog already let me know? I'll send out invites tonight, so we should be able to get started tomorrow.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

here are the relevant older threads in case anyone is curious:

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

Count me in.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

So what I was thinking was: Phineas Fogg started his trip in London and worked his way Eastwards round the globe. Each track should be in some way to the "East" of the track that proceeded it, but that doesn't necessarily mean in terms of its origin - titles, puns and tenuous links will, as ever, help to keep things moving. And we see if we can get back to London at the end of the CD. Okay?

I Ain't No Addict, Whoever Heard of a Junkie as Old as Me? (noodle vague), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm. I was just thinking that once a location has been established in song by one selection, it would be off limits to anyone coming later. Your idea is a lot more...rigorous.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

Well whatever everybody's happy with, obv. It's not like me to be rigorous, I must need an early night.

I Ain't No Addict, Whoever Heard of a Junkie as Old as Me? (noodle vague), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

I like the idea of a constant Eastward movement as long as people don't get overeager and jump too far.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Oh man, I'm going to have a hard enough time picking a tune that fits musically without having to worry about geography.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

That's part of the challenge.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm back in as well (if it makes it to disc 2)

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

So is your mom, Ned, so is your mom.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

A few more Dragonlance recipes and you'll be fine.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

(seriously, whatever people want to do, I don't mean to stand in the way of rigor)

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

i like the london-going-east theme too. it's not like you couldn't zig-zag north and south a bit.

tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

AW SNAP

xpost

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

SPICY FRIED POTATOES!
Every time we actually tried to play a Dragonlance module, it would devolve into arguments as to where the best fried potatoes could be found should Otik not be available.

-- Ned Raggett (ne...), August 9th, 2004.

You know I love you, Ned.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

Hahahahahahahahaha awesome.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Austin, I'll need the login hookup to participate.

gspm (gspm), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Austin it's the same email address as the ILC poll, i.e. the gmail version of my login hotmail address.

Like the Eastward thing cos I'm third on the list and that means EUROPOP.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Unless I choose a track from Russia.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Or I scramble the order! Hahahaha!

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Email invites for the blog sent to Candicissima, Freaky Trigger, Wa1ter Kr@nz, and gspm.

W1lliam Swy6art, I hope you don't mind waiting to be added to the rotation. I think we're pretty full right now, but a second disc should have room for you, and also Ke1th S@wyer.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 18 August 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

Who else needs an invite?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 18 August 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

That'll be absolutely fine by me. I am very, very bad at confusing east and west in any case.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 18 August 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

i'm very excited about this theme. get those sublime frequencies discs out!

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 18 August 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

can we make this a C700? there's a lot of world to cover.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 18 August 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

Well, speaking for myself, my #$@#$ discman is where I listen to most of my music, and it doesn't play mp3 discs.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 18 August 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

how about two C80s?

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 18 August 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

I would be in favour of a 130 minute, 2CD theme. Might as well dither with the rules and try some new things for ILMiXor Beta.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 18 August 2005 02:14 (twenty years ago)

Dang! This sounds like much goodness. :-)
-- Ned Raggett (ne...) (webmail), January 21st, 2004 1:07 AM. (Ned) (link)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 18 August 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

The only neg thing about 2 cds/160 minutes is that it fucks with the delicious pun in the theme.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 18 August 2005 02:28 (twenty years ago)

oh shit, that's right

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 18 August 2005 02:32 (twenty years ago)

Maybe for the next theme, then!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 18 August 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

i'll probably steal this idea and make my own mix anyway. hah!

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 18 August 2005 04:45 (twenty years ago)

Who else needs an invite?

Me. Also, I have no webspace to use, how does that shared gmail address thing work?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I've kicked things off at the blogspot.

MCD, Europe. I mean, you're up.

Oh, fuck it, you know what I mean.

Just post something by Friday or we move on to the next in line, okay?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Hey Ned, do you want me to host your MP3 again? Email me and I will put it up. Anyone else, just email me. :-)

nathalie starts to cry each time we meet (stevie nixed), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

Tuomas, I've just sent your invitation.

The gmail thing works like this: email your mp3 as an attachment to ilmixor at gmail dot com. Someone who can host your file on their webspace will probably volunteer do so quickly and provide the url to you so you can use it when you post. Alternatively, anyone who wants to get it directly from the gmail account can do that, provided they know the password (it's ilovemusic)

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

No invite received :(

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

freakytrigger at gmail dot com, right? Blogger says it's pending. Maybe it got caught by a spamwall or something?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 18 August 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

MCD, Europe. I mean, you're up.

I'm going to do this tonight.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Tom, I have resent the invitation, this time to the freakytrigger hotmail address. I hope it works better this way.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

i can host files.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

every time i see "resent" ("sent again") i read it as "resent" ("feel indignantly aggrieved at").

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Who else needs an invite?

Yes please!

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Tantrum, sending...

sent.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 18 August 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

I'm posted. Tom, Europop up!

mcd (mcd), Friday, 19 August 2005 01:46 (twenty years ago)

By the way, Austin, love the Ornette track!

mcd (mcd), Friday, 19 August 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

...which means that SOMEHOW we've got to get you registered for the blog. Any luck with finding those invites?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 19 August 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

edit - That was addressed to Tom, obviously. Glad you enjoyed the Prime Time, MCD. I figured I should start with a performer intimately associated with London, so who better than a free jazz fusion group mostly from Ft. Worth and Philly?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 19 August 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

PS - I heart your Afro-funk as well.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 19 August 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to do this. Last time someone sent me an invite but it didn't work. Could somebody send me all the info on what I'm supposed to do again?

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 19 August 2005 02:50 (twenty years ago)

I've sent another invite to the address in your sig, Hurting. We probably won't get to you on the first disc of the late-summer go-round, though.

Let me know if you recieve it, and especially if you don't. I'm logging off now, though.

Night, y'all.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 19 August 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

Hey Ned, do you want me to host your MP3 again?

Please!

Will be away from the computer from Friday afternoon to Sunday night so if some reason it gets to me in the interim I beg your patience. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 August 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

i wanna do this since cruel fate barred me from doing it last time.

joseph (joseph), Friday, 19 August 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

I'd like in, I missed my turn the last time due to being absolutely nowhere near a PC last time. I'll try not to ruin it again.

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 19 August 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

I'd totally love to do this even though I don't post nearly enough here. jacobDOTwrightATgmailDOTcom...

Jacob (Jacob), Friday, 19 August 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

Looking forward to downloading these tonight.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Joseph, Sasha, Jacob, possibly other folks too:

I'm holding off on adding people to the roster until it's clear how far the current roster is going to take us. I won't forget you, though, and nobody will go twice before you have a chance to play.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 19 August 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

If it gets to 19 track on this mix I guess I should have something in mind that is possibly Japanese or American (North or South) or Irish. Probably a little too early to start making any plan though. Who knows where this trip will head.

gspm (gspm), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Hey Ned, do you want me to host your MP3 again?
Please!

Will be away from the computer from Friday afternoon to Sunday night so if some reason it gets to me in the interim I beg your patience. :-)

You know where I live. ;-) Anyone else who wants me to put up an MP3, just let me know. In fact I can always set up an FTP folder. Just email me and I'll do it.

nathalie starts to cry each time we meet (stevie nixed), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:05 (twenty years ago)

there will be fireworks when this mix runs into Tanya Headon (travelling the other way)

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

I don't think we'll get to Ned before Monday anyway. Tom's up today, and the weekend doesn't count.

Which reminds me: Tom, if there's anything else I can do to help you get posting access, let me know. I've run out of ideas.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 19 August 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

bump

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 19 August 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

I would like to get on the waiting list for the next round of this.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Friday, 19 August 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

bump to the top

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 21 August 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

up...

Ned, if Tom hasn't made his move by tomorrow, I think you should go right ahead.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 22 August 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

Tom, I've just sent out an invite to that other address you provided. Hope it works this time.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 22 August 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

Yes, it worked!

What's the accepted method of putting tracks up? Yousendit? If Ned wants to go ahead today then I'm happy to hold until tomorrow, as I won't be back home to post until late tonight. (But on the other hand late tonight for me is midday for Ned anyway.)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

We'd prefer to have it on a more permanent link, but if you don't have webspace to host it, send it to the common gmail account (ilmixor at etc.) and somebody will probably be able to host for yas. Cindy's been volunteering space, for example.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)

I have plenty of space on Freaky Trigger so it's not a problem! Just wanted to check the format.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

mp3 is probably the most universally utile, then.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

Whoah! I just realized I had the order mixed up.

Coming up after Tom is Tantrum the Cat, then Ned, Here's the whole current schedule:

Tantrum
Ned
Mind in Rewind
Alex
Dan Perry
Ian Johns0n
Haitch
Mike t-diva
Candicissima
Jordan
Jody
Tricky
Noodle
Walter Krantz
Ian Reese-Moraine
Sean
Tuomas
Colin
Charlie
--------below this line are people who've shown an interest, but we're waiting to see how momentum carries us
William Swygart

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 22 August 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

ttt

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 22 August 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Finally! Over to you, Tantrum, hope my MP3 worked and I got the format right!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 August 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

It seems to link to something called dontsteal.gif

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 22 August 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh, maybe your server doesn't allow external links. If you copy the link and paste it into a new browser it works fine.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 22 August 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Damn, sorry, I was afraid that would happen. I will get Alan to sort it out when he comes back from holiday tomorrow, in the meantime I can YSI the track and change the link if that would be less hassle.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 August 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

Done!

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

Hey Tom, while we wait for the webspace to get usable, do you think you could send the Dr. Alban mp3 to the [email protected] account?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 04:28 (twenty years ago)

Right, me next? Currently shuffling through some ideas but here's a clue -- we're off to Russia!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 04:36 (twenty years ago)

Yeah Ned, you're up.

Then Mind in Rewind, Alez McPherson, Dan Perry and Ian John5on, which should take us through to Wednesday, easy.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 04:46 (twenty years ago)

Okay, mine's up, so Mind InRewind is next...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

Whee! We're really booking now.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:10 (twenty years ago)

From Ornette to Marc Almond in 5 moves!

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

Oh I have a really good one as long as MindInRewind doesn't move too far east.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

Hi, I saw Ned's post just now. I'll post something tonight!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

My post is up. Here is a ysi link:

http://s37.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0WY2LEOP123X62UPHXOH5094PZ

If somebody can host that file, send me an email and I'll create the permanent link.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

Oh look Barry has had his turn. I will be able to post something tonight, ie in about 8hrs time, and will do what he did with ysi as I don't have any webspace or understand how it works.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

Okay, then it'll be Dan Perry, Ian John5on, Haitch, Mike t-Diva, and Candacissima. I believe Dan is the only one of that bunch who doesn't already have blog privileges. Where would you like me to send the invite?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Tom, I was eagerly waiting to hear Leila K on the Dr. Alban track, but she wasn't there... :( Are you sure you got the details right (maybe it's a remix or something)?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 28 August 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Ian John5on seems to have forfeitted his turn. If Haitch beats him to the punch with the next post, we'll move Mr. John5on to the back of the line.

ok so I'm up then? I'll have something done when I get home from work.

"Put me on at the end of the line... If not this time, maybe some other"

Sure, you bet.

"I'm still new and scared by all your ilm-ers"

There's no need for that. The initiation process very rarely does more than maim.

"Is there an easy way to subscribe to Feedburner feeds through Thunderbird?"

I have no idea what you are talking about here, unless it's a Ford Convertible or a cheap wine.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

Here's a comparison of how far we've travelled to current runtime.

In the first 10 tracks we have moved about 100 degrees longitude over 39:18 minutes, putting us 80 degrees longitude behind schedule. We've got some big jumps coming up soon in the pacific and atlantic oceans, though, so we'll probably make it fine.

By my reckoning we're on 56 and a half minutes, so nobody has to rush back to London just yet.

last night after posting i realized that i inadvertently bypassed australia and new zealand. oops.

australia is just a little too far west for where we were after candicissima posted. i actually didn't want to do new zealand cuz there's obviously some great music from there but i don't have much to SAY about it.

Countries that are East of Rio and West of London: Greenland, Iceland, Ireland, Isle Of Man, Wales, Scotland, Azores, Canary Islands, Cape Verde Islands, Portugal, most of Spain, the Balearic islands, Brittany (France), Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, bits of Mali, bits of Algeria, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast.

My post is up. The file is just a YSI now but if someone could post it to a real server it would be greatly appreciated. I tried to make the shortest jump possible so most of the countries listed above are still wide open. Over to Ian-Riese Moraine.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

By my assessment that puts the mix at a touch over 63min. Are we aiming to stay under 72 or 80? Depending on what Ian provides I've got the potential to be the final song which is presumably back in London.

gspm (gspm), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

It's "Around The World In 80 Minutes", so, y'know. (Although my machine starts objecting at around the 79:30 mark.)

I hope Ian doesn't take us out of Africa yet, 'cause I got a good song choice ready. Then again, continental Europe is fine too, so do what you wish, Ian.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 September 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

I think I am ready to go if Ian is not with us at the moment.

gspm (gspm), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 8 September 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

Ah, sorry Sean, I didn't notice you were in the queue too before me. Is anyone willing to offer webspace for me when my turn comes? If Sean can put something up today, I think I can follow him tonight, provided that I have a host for the song.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 September 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

okay, should have my post up shortly.

gspm (gspm), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

ok, it is up. Any estimates on how much of a server hit hosting a song entails? I don't anticipate a problem but my estimate of the interest in each of these track may be off.

gspm (gspm), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

I'm about to be out of town until the 17th — obviously, if things get to me before I'm back, drop me back to the end of the line, or dump me, or whatever.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 8 September 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

I've had 99 downloads of the Huun-Huur-Tu MP3 on my server space, if that's any indication.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 8 September 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

tuomas - i can host your file. just email it to me or post a ysi. (this applies for anyone else that needs hosting. i won't keep the files up indefinitely, but as it stands now i can spare the bandwidth)

tricky (disco stu), Thursday, 8 September 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

a ballpark of 99 downloads over more than a week sounds okay. that's not even a GB for what I have uploaded. if it was like a thousand downloads then i'd have to start watching it. I should be fine. thanks for the tip.

gspm (gspm), Thursday, 8 September 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Tricky, thanks for your offer, but what's your e-mail address? Or if Tricky's not here, can anyone else who's online host the file? If I don't do it tonight or tomorrow before 1 PM (Central European time minus one hour), you'll have to wait for Sunday or Monday.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 September 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

click the webmail link if you're logged in...

tricky (disco stu), Thursday, 8 September 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Okay, but clicking the webmail doesn't still show your address, and the ILX webmail doesn't allow attachments. Why don't we do it like this: email me to [email protected], and I'll reply you with the song attached.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 September 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Okay, my song should be up too. I know it's a rather predictable choice, but I've just recently refound this band (and this particular song), so don't mind me hyping them up.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 September 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, it isn't there yet... Is there some time period before which posts don't appear on the page? I can see it when I view my own posts.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 September 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

I see it so it must just be a caching issue on your end.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 8 September 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Ah, it's there now! Thanks for hosting the file Tricky.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 September 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

We're not ready to cross the waters for Britain yet, so we take a detour to the Continent. Over the Alps, and we come to the country of fondue, yodeling and direct democracy;

em, well... i'm not entirely sure what's happening now since tuomas has taken us from ireland to central europe (Switzerland?) bypassing the UK, Spain, porugal, france, and most of germany, scandinavia and africa. does this not miss the point of the excercise? i thought it was going to end in London?

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 8 September 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

...and we were on course do do just that within the time limit, i think?

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 8 September 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

my selection of Ireland was motivated by leaving at least the whole of Britain for the subsequent posters. Is Domingo a town on the Isle of Man?

gspm (gspm), Thursday, 8 September 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I didn't feel like posting an UK track, because so much of what I listen to is from there anyway. I thought this was supposed to be a bit of an exotic trip...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 8 September 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps it's a reference to Placido Domingo, born in Madrid!

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 8 September 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

Around the World in Eighty Minutes!

Alright, here we go! The theme of the mix is "Around the World In Eighty Minutes" and so to imitate the classic tale, we're going to start and finish in London, heading east the whole way.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 8 September 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

I don't know why I struggled to make as short a jump as possible. There were all sorts of superior African-related tracks I could have posted. Oh well.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 8 September 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

If we're a bit ahead of schedule, no harm in a little sightseeing, I guess.

Going from tijuana to Brazil seemed like the big jump where a lot of opportunities were missed to me. But I love the Brazil track, so I don't really mean to complain.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 9 September 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

For chrissakes Jed, I thought this was supposed to be about having fun, not about counting longitudes. I didn't expect we'd jump from Africa to Ireland, I thought we'd go through Continental Europe first, so I didn't even have any UK tracks prepared.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 9 September 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

it's hardly a big overshoot by Tuomas in the general scheme of things, is it? perhaps he flew ryanair ;)

if someone does a london-oriented track to finish, all will be well

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

For chrissakes Jed, I thought this was supposed to be about having fun, not about counting longitudes.

a lot of us did have fun counting longitudes. the rules of the mix were explained pretty well, i thought, and it's not like there's a shortage of world maps out there...

renegade bus (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

You can imagine that the story in the song takes place in Spain or France then (Domingo de Santa Clara is a Spanish name, and the vocalist speaks French in the middle), if it's that important. Let's say that Santa Clara is a small village in the French-Spanish border, okay?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

i think it's me to go, if someone can tell me how long there is left on the CD and where i should go for it (to london or not?) it would be much appreciated. i'll be back in a few hours!

jed_ (jed), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

what is the double meaning of generation gap?

i like insouciance.

tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 11 September 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

(oh forget it, i get the double meaning now)

tricky (disco stu), Sunday, 11 September 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

So far:

J'Accuse!
Insouciance.
Dawn Till Dawn.
Failed Seduction.
Swingers Party From Hell.
Kiss Whitie.
Generation Gap.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Sunday, 11 September 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

I vote for "Swingers Party from Hell". But, y'know, I would.

I Oppose All Rock and Roll (noodle vague), Sunday, 11 September 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

I'll second that.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 11 September 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

I was going to suggest a New Orleans theme, but maybe that's too limiting.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 12 September 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

i oppose any theme with "from hell" in the name. it's almost as bad as "on acid."

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 12 September 2005 01:28 (twenty years ago)

since we skipped over america on this last one, how about an across-the-country-in-80-minutes theme?

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 12 September 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

s/c (xpost) OTM

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 12 September 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's not like America hasn't been represented. Hilary Duff, Don Pullen and Ornette Coleman, ya know.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 12 September 2005 04:06 (twenty years ago)

From Hell to America... ON ACID!

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 12 September 2005 05:30 (twenty years ago)

i like it.

s/c (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 12 September 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm in for the 2nd one as well.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Monday, 12 September 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

I was going to suggest a New Orleans theme, but maybe that's too limiting.

Nah. Let's do it.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 12 September 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

i like the across america theme as well as "insouciance".

Google define says:
Carefreeness: the cheerful feeling you have when nothing is troubling you.

Dictionary.com says:
Blithe lack of concern; nonchalance.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

"Blithe lack of concern" it apparently is.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 23 September 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

"insouciance" might be too close in theme to "chutzpah," which was the first ilmixor we did.

the happy smile patrol (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 23 September 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

I disagree, chutzpah is TOTALLY different from insouciance.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 23 September 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

i've interpreted "insouciance" as having an undertone of prattishness to it, but the dictionary definition doesn't mention this. hrm.

the happy smile patrol (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 23 September 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, insouciance is like blithely tripping along the street whilst cars crash and children fall down manholes in yr wake.

I'm a Problem for Anthony Blair (noodle vague), Friday, 23 September 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

or playing golf at your ranch while there's a category 4 hurricane sweeping the gulf coast.

the happy smile patrol (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 23 September 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

and the wind giving you a hole in one off a par 5.

I'm a Problem for Anthony Blair (noodle vague), Friday, 23 September 2005 02:00 (twenty years ago)

j b everlovin' r (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 01:50 (twenty years ago)
